Sale to include an important Auckland collection of Taonga

INTRODUCTION

We are pleased to present our second Oceanic and Asian catalogue for 2024. This catalogue follows on from our very successful sale of the Epsom Taonga collection in March. This sale achieved a total of over 1 million dollars and set new records for the sale of Hei-tiki in New Zealand.

This catalogue features another fine selection of Hei-tiki along with rare Māori weaponry including a superb Pouwhenua and Toki Kakauroa from an important Wellington collection. Also included in the Oceanic section is an offering of rare pieces made by Thomas Aubrey Chappé Hall including a superb long case clock and carved coffer.

The African art collection includes a selection of pieces collected by Michael Yoffe. Michael Yoffe served as the Hand craft advisor and export developer with the United Nations in the 1960s and 1970s. A number of these pieces were field collected by Michael Yoffe during this time.

The taxidermy collection in the sale features one of the most important taxidermy Huia to come to auction in New Zealand. This rare specimen has remained in the same family for 126 years and the taxidermy was completed by James Gardener, taxidermist to Queen Victoria in 1898. Also in this section is a collection of African animals. The taxidermy was undertaken by the famous firm of Roland Ward in the early 1950s.

The Asian section of the catalogue is headlined by the Ian and Mary Heriot collection. Mary and Ian had a shared passion for collecting fine Japanese decorative arts, ukiyo-e (wood block prints), rare Asian art books as well as Lalique. After Ian passed away in 2023, they bequeathed their fine ukiyo-e collection to the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa and the substantial book collection to the University of Canterbury Asian department.

I first met Ian and Mary when I was an auctioneer’s assistant at Webbs auctions in the early 1990s and we have remained friends since that time. Mary and Ian would always attend the viewings together discussing their potential purchases and researching pieces in great depth and were always happy to share their extensive knowledge of Japanese Asian art with me. Mary has a great eye for fine Japanese studio pottery and tea wares – a collection she has retained alongside some of their Lalique collection. Ian was well known for his careful and assiduous research and his work added considerable academic value to the bequests to Te Papa and the University of Canterbury.

Mary has decided that it is time to now rationalize the collection, and, in this catalogue, we present a fine offering of Satsuma, Lalique and Japanese and Chinese ceramics from their well provenanced collection.

We have enjoyed putting this extensive catalogue together, particularly our collaborative work with Mary Heriot. We hope that you enjoy reading it. We look forward to welcoming you at the viewing and auctions in Wellington.

Thomas Aubrey Chappé Hall (1873 – 1958): A Cross-Cultural Connection

Arriving from England in 1895, Hall settled in the Whanganui River region and soon became engrossed in the world of Maori art and carving. Hori Pukehika, celebrated Te Ati Haunui-a- Paparangi carver, took Hall under his wing and taught him traditional Maori carving whilst travelling from camp to camp along the Whanganui River. From 1899 Hall moved around the country, settling in Auckland in 1913. Gilbert Archey recognized Hall’s talent, and he was commissioned in 1928 to renovate the wharenui Hotunui at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. After the successful restoration, Hall was commissioned to restore the whare whakairo Mataatua at the Otago Museum, including tukutuku panel work as well as restoring a waka taua. Given Hall’s high reputation, other commissions around the country soon followed. As well as his many institutional commissions and restoration work Hall used traditional whakairo motifs and patterns to decorate smaller domestic items in what has been described as the East Coast Style. Of note is the Tūru whakairo (Edwardian carved chair) held at Te Papa. Due to the loss of dexterity, he stopped carving in 1951 and passed away in 1958. He bequeathed his carving tools to Ngati Porou carver Pineamine Taiapa, who wrote of Hall, “It is with deep regret to know that my friend, Apanui Ringamatu, as I fondly call him, has passed away and has joined in mythical Hawaikinui those great masters of New Zealand art, whose dexterity of hand, mind and artistic flair, both of us so minutely studied, copied and faithfully reproduced. Maori art has lost a great Pakeha, New Zealand also, a valuable member, who has contributed to a part of that great reconstruction of the story of the Māori, his artistry.

We who knew him at the War Memorial Museum, all carvers from different tribes, will revere his memory and respectfully send our aroha and mihi to you all, his next of kin. He will rest in peace and have by now all the answers to all our questions regarding this form and that, intriguing motif found in the work…” (Taiapa to Matthews, 18 June 1958).

The Thomas Aubrey Chappé Hall coffer offered in catalogue (lot 61) is astonishingly beautiful. It is superbly carved with a wheku head surrounded by manaia figures carved in high relief to the lid. The Estate Collection of Michael Yoffe (1928 – 2023)

Micheal Yoffe’s dedication to preserving indigenous crafts spanned over three decades. His scholarship and mission aimed to elevate indigenous crafts and safeguard artisan skill and cultural heritage. His legacy lives on through the development of high-end export markets, ensuring sustainable income source for vulnerable and rural communities all over the world.

Micheal Yoffe was born 1928 Boston, Massachusetts USA into an immigrant Lithuanian Jewish family. As a young person he worked summers at his family’s textile factory and later went on to graduate in Product Design majoring in textiles and photography from Rhode Island School of Design, in addition to his studies in Mexico where he became fluent in Spanish.

Michael later served as Handicraft Advisor and Export Developer with the United Nations. He began his career with the United Nations 1965 after discharge from United States Army in specialist training in photography and applied arts. Michael was assigned within many United Nations divisions throughout Central America, Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Pacific and Africa. He worked primarily across the applied arts and handicraft divisions, wood, weaving, textile, ceramics, glass, and metal work.

Whilst working at United Nations headquarters in Geneva he met his wife Susan in 1966 and soon after their marriage they had a daughter Ruth. Following his postings to Malta and Vienna with the International Labour Organisation he was assigned to Indonesia in 1972 where the family moved and adopted their son Ethan. The Yoffe family then lived in Botswana and Antigua for several years until 1983. Michael went on to work both long and short-term assignments in many other countries including Sudan, Ethiopia and Tanzania, Pakistan, and India.

Throughout Michael Yoffe’s career working with handicrafts, he amassed an extensive personal collection of antique textiles and artefacts from many of the countries where he had worked and lived. At Age sixty-five Michael based himself in Auckland working on short-term assignments until his retirement at seventy-five. His Auckland home was filled with the beautiful artistry he admired, reflecting his many years of extraordinary work and passion. He spent his last chapter photographing, painting, and cooking up a weekly feast for his friends with ’art-nights-with-mike’ and wonderful storytelling. He is survived by his daughter Ruth who now is ready to share his extensive collection of ethnographic art.

We are delighted to offer some pieces from the Michael Yoffe Collection in this catalogue, of note is the A Nkisi Figure from the Bambara People of Mali (lot 101), the Chokwe mwana pwo mask from angola (lot 106), the Gelede mask from the Yoruba people, west Africa (lot 104), and the highly decorative bwa/bobo butterfly mask from Burkina Faso (lot 102).

Huia: An Avian Wonder of The World

In this catalogue we are delighted to offer a superbly preserved female huia in original Victorian diorama and case created by James Gardner taxidermist to Queen Victoria in 1898, with label affixed to the reverse of the case.

The now extinct huia were prized for their beauty, especially their deep blue black tail feathers marked by a distinctive white tip. Tail feathers were especially revered by Māori and were worn as a sign of chiefly rank. The practice of wearing huia feathers was adopted by Victorian and early 20th century milliners where the feathers adorned fine hats. The long-curved beaks of the females were also gold mounted and worn as brooches. Further credence was given to this practice when a high-ranking Māori woman took a quill from her own hair and placed it in the hatband of the Duke of York, then heir to the British throne, during his visit to New Zealand in 1901.

Huia birds were found throughout the North Island before humans arrived in New Zealand but have been extinct from the early 20th century due to widespread deforestation, over hunting, and predation. Māori named the bird after hearing its loud call described as a smooth whistle rendered as uia uia or where are you? Whilst Māori hunting pressures on the huia were limited to some extent by traditional protocols (the hunting season was from May to July when the bird's plumage was in prime condition and a rahui [hunting ban] was enforced over the spring and summer months), after European settlement in the 1840s, habitat destruction, and introduced ship rats and cats had reduced the bird’s range to the Southern North Island whereby huia numbers began to decline more quickly.

A particularly tragic part in the huia’s downfall was played by the naturalists of the day. Having identified the bird as an avian wonder of the world due to the unusual sexual dimorphism of the beak. For them, it was the beak that set the bird apart, ranking it, along with the moa and kiwi, as one of the world’s most remarkable birds. Where the men of science led, unscrupulous traders followed harvesting them in large numbers for overseas museum collections.

It was soon open season on huia. Between 1891 and the early 1900s, the Austrian taxidermist Andreas Reischek took 212 pairs as specimens for the Natural History Museum in Vienna, where they are still held today. Examples are held in museums all over the world. New Zealand ornithologist Walter Buller was particularly fascinated by the huia and studied the birds at great length both in captivity and in the wild. Buller collected a great many – on one of several expeditions to the Remutaka ranges in 1883 he collected 18 examples.

The huia in this sale is a particularly rare example as its full provenance is known and the taxidermists label is affixed to the original case. The pelt was given as payment for legal services to one of the first barristers in Palmerston North in the late 19th century, George Hartop Elliot Warburton. He took the skin to London and had her mounted by the premier taxidermist of the time, James Gardner. Gardner painted the case interior in his distinctive luminous colourful style. Warburton returned to New Zealand with the mounted huia in 1904, and she has remained in the private collection of the family for 126 years. With a change of family circumstances, the family have now decided that it is time to sell the huia presenting collectors with an opportunity to procure one of the most rare and important repatriated examples ever offered for sale on the open market.

Kaneta Masanao Sculptural Kurinuki Sculptural Vase

Hagi white, pink glaze. With original box

An eighth-generation Hagi potter, Kaneta Masanao has expanded beyond the tradition of his ancestry to create a more sculptural oeuvre. Perhaps due to his training as a sculptor, his forms have a strong and dramatic presence that sets them apart from works by other artists working in this traditional ceramic center. Using the centuries-old Hagi white-pink glazes, Kaneta creates unique and readily identifiable functional and non-functional sculptural forms. His signature technique of kurinuki, in which he digs or scoops-out a form out of the clay instead of shaping it on a wheel, further allows him to boldly depart from ancient Hagi traditions. He tirelessly continues to pursue and challenge new difficult forms that fight against gravity while improving on glazing and firing in a climbing kiln.

This sale is subject to the conditions of business printed in this catalogue and to the reserves.

Viewing

All lots are available for inspection prior to the sale. Although staff will endeavour to answer your enquiries, and give advice, the final decision to bid, is at your discretion and liability.

Pre-Sale Estimates

The estimated prices printed below the catalogue descriptions are in New Zealand dollars and are the approximate prices expected to be realised, excluding buyers premium. They are not definitive, they are prepared well in advance of the sale and they are subject to revision.

Condition Reports

Dunbar Sloane Ltd will provide a verbal condition report if you would like an opinion on any particular lot prior to purchasing. These must be requested at least 24 hours before the commencement of auction. All goods are sold “as is” and it is up to the buyer to satisfy themselves as to the condition of an item before the auction.
