840 A Garth chester Bent Plywood Curvesse Chair Auckland furniture designer Garnet ‘Garth’ Chester (1916–1968) is one of New Zealand’s most important and recognisable furniture designers. In 1944 Chester pioneered the cantilevered Curvesse chair. It was made from four sheets of 3/16th plywood pressed together to make a single form, with a stable base from two solid runners. The pivotal moment in their
manufacture came when the press was closed – if there were no loud cracking noises the makers knew they had succeeded. The failure rate was about one in five, and about 80 of the chairs were sold.

An intricately carved Maori wooden canoe prow ‘Tauihu’ by master carver James Rickard The two large spirals in the centre are named Takarangi, taka meaning the curve and rangi is to divide. Celestial navigation relies on the navigators’ understanding of certain constellations and the curvature of the earth. The curves have been divided to allow the sky to be seen and the figure between is there to join the two spirals together. These spirals are symbolic of the four major ocean currents of the Pacific which were used by the Polynesians in traversing it. The front figure depicts Tangaroa who is the Guardian of the Ocean. M81 A large carved Maori
wooden sculpture of Rakamaomao by master carver James Rickard The ‘cloak’ is carved in a beak-like pattern while the head is of owl form.
This carving tells the story of cult hero Tawhaki who scaled the heavens to consult his tupuna. On his journey Tawhaki noticed the gods using different feathers during certain ceremonies so he asked Rakamaomao’s permission to
take some of these sacred birds back to earth as gifts for his wife. The Huia, Koekoea and the Kotuku were some of the birds brought down to earth. A person who wears the plumes of these birds in his/her hair becomes synonymous with rangatiratanga. It is said that Rakamaomao, guardian of sacred birds, was in fact the parent of these birds.
