THE DAVE OLDHAM COLLECTION OF MILITARIA David (Dave) Oldham began his interest in the collecting of militaria during his late high school years, in the 1960’s, at a time when this was in its infancy. There were few books or other printed material, and knowledge was gained from the few senior collectors of the day and discussions with other enthusiasts. His studies at university in the histories and social sciences were a great background to his interest. Over the years his collection has changed as knowledge developed and he devoted a lot of his time to trading in general militaria in the market place. During this time, his core collection has continued to grow. It covers such diverse fields as German military documents, tank force medals, New Zealand military photo albums, documents, diaries, Philippine ethnic items and military medals. He has gained a deep knowledge of many facets of the collecting world over the years and now feels the time has come to pass on his collection.

Harold Owen Chatterton was the driver of Heptinstall’s tank. Comes with additional information and modern photographic copies of the tanks. Heptinstall’s tank was ambushed by a tiger tank of the German 508 Heavy Tank battalion while he was advancing down a road towards Florence in Italy, on 3 August 1944. The first shot penetrated the left front of the Sherman at close range, and killed Chatterton. The remainder of the crew apart from Heptinstall were killed while evacuating the vehicle. This and subsequent actions earned him his Military Cross. For a full account of the engagement, see the Official History of the 20th Battalion. Heptinstall had his campaign medals plated, and I have kept them as such. After WW2 he moved to Canada, and this may have been an attempt to replicate the real silver Canadian medals. All Items in excellent condition. Acquired this group from Canada, where he lived, probably following his death. Est. $10,000 - 15,000

Of Haydon Bridge Northumberland. Enlisted Durham. Died of wounds 14/2/1917. Research shows that the most likely place for his winning the MM would be Clark’s Trench/Hook Trench at High Wood during the battle of Flers-Courcellette on 15 September 1916. 1/6th formed a defensive flank at Hook Trench, sending bombers to the NW of the wood and successfully defended the whole right flank of the 50th Division. This is not the confirmed engagement, but the most likely. He appears to have died in England, from wounds received subsequently. A nice medal to a DOW. Obverse polished, and about F. Lance Corporal Clarence William Kidd, A Squadron 20th Battalion NZ Armoured Brigade, killed in action on 24th December 1943, on the Orsogna Road. Born NZ 27/11/1919, a fireman. On the morning of 24th December, A squadron, led by Major Phillips moved along the road past the cemetery. About 600 yards past , they turned off to support 28th Battalion. They had engineers sweeping for mines, but near the crossroads, due to the volume of fire, infantry and engineer units withdrew. As dawn was approaching, the tanks had to try to get hull down positions near the crossroads and the sunken track running north. Two earlier tank attacks had confirmed that there were no other suitable positions between the start line and the crossroads. A few hundred yards short of the crossroads, Major Phillip’s tank was stopped when mines blew off both tracks. While the crew were evacuating, Lance Corporal Kidd, and Trooper Newton, the gunner were killed. EF in issue case Est. $600 - 700
NZ WW2 MEMORIAL CROSS- TANK CREW Named to “63067 PTE R.J. SHIRREFFS”. 63067 Trooper Rolfe Jefferson Shirreffs, B Squadron, 18TH Battalion, 4th Armored Brigade. Killed in Action approximately 1.30 pm 15th December 1943. At 1pm Hawkins’ and Burns’ troops under Major Dickinson’s command, set off along the road towards the cemetery, to the accompaniment of the inevitable shellfire, which began to fall around the tanks as soon as they moved out into the open. The foremost infantry posts, short of the cemetery, were left behind, and the tanks were out alone and unsupported, heading for enemy territory. Just down the road tragedy was waiting, the grimmest tragedy yet to strike 18th Regiment. Out from the protecting cemetery walls the tanks were in flat country, thinly covered with trees, where, all unknown, German antitank guns were waiting. Hawkins’ tank, coming across the sights of the first gun less than a hundred yards past the cemetery, was a sitting shot. An armor piercing shell hit it fair and square and it burst into flames; Hawkins himself got out, but his efforts to rescue his crew failed, and all four were killed. Hawkins, shocked and burned, had to be evacuated.(18th Battn official history) Hawkins tank was hit by an armour piercing shell, which penetrated the right hand side of his tank and set it on fire. Hawkins got out and then noticed his gunner was having trouble getting out. He climbed back onto the tank to help him but another shell hit the turret killing the gunner. He then went around to the front to assist the driver and spare driver, but the flames were very strong and he was forced away. They all perished in the tank , while he was evacuated suffering from burns. (Plowman- Orsogna) Medal is EF, in issue case. Est. $600 - 700

From Matamata, New Zealand. During the advance of the west side of the Liri River. Engaging enemy troops moving northwards, most likely from 1 Parachute Division. While supporting the Indian Division, near Colle Lusienetta, one troop covered the road while another pursued up a hill. “The leading tanks were far too close to the enemy and things went badly at first. Corporal Mick Culinane’s tank was hit, probably by a bazooka bomb , and ‘brewed up’ very quickly. As the crew piled out a Spandau shot them up, killing Trooper Bert Hill, and wounding all the rest. Cullinane was killed by the same Spandau. The tanks could not give any effective reply for the moment, for the hills ahead were covered with trees, and they were working blind.” (Lieutenant Tim Cullinane- commander of 9 troop).
