4 Molly Macalister (1920-1979) Constellation bronze suspended by stainless steel wires attached to stainless steel base plates stainless steel wire 3.5m length approx, base plates 156 x 109cm $12,500 - 17,500 PROVENANCE commissioned directly from the artist by BP Oil New Zealand Ltd, 1970 LITERATURE Robin Woodward, The Sculpture of Molly Macalister, Art New Zealand 26, 1983 p. 61. AWARDS Winner of National Competition to select a work for the foyer of the new BP New Zealand Headquarters, Wellington ‘Macalister’s later commissions are much less closely allied to the figurative, representational tradition. Largely as a result of first hand contact with international sculpture in 1967 her work took a new turn both in materials and concept. The first manifestation of this in her public sculpture is Constellation, designed in 1970 for the B.P. Building in Wellington. Hers was the winning entry in a national competition to choose a work of art for the foyer of the new building. It is an arrangement of polished bronze forms on stainless steel wires attached to the ceiling and to a stainless steel base. Special lighting in ceiling was installed as part of the design to create an interplay of shadows on the polished base plate. The incorporation of light to such a degree is a new development in Macalister’s sculpture and follows international trends.’ Robin Woodward, Art New Zealand p. 61.

LITERATURE Arthur Howell, Frances Hodgkins Four Vital Years (London 1951) p. 119. Whitford and Hughes, Frances Hodgkins 1869-1947 (Chichester 1990) no. 23. It is highly likely that this work was shown at the Lefevre Galleries under the title Marrows and Peppers, Tossa. It was painted among a series of still life, which included the well-known Pumpkins & Pimenti (Fletcher Trust Collection) [illustrated below] painted in the winter of 1935-36 at Tossa de Mar, Gerona, Spain. It was from here that Hodgkins sent a suite of works to Duncan McDonald of the Lefevre Galleries with an accompanying letter stating ‘You will see that I have put a large amount of Frances Hodgkins into them even into the joyless marrows and I do hope that you will not say that this woman’s work is not worth a penny a day to me. I am sure you will realise that I have had to adapt myself to local conditions and to do the best I can…’
