The Invincibles 1924 All Blacks toured to the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Canada. The photographic print is signed by players including Cliff Porter, George Nepia, Maurice and Cyril Brownlie, Bert Cooke, Lui Paewai etc. The Invincibles earned the title by winning all 32 games on tour, scoring 838 points and conceding only 116.

LITERATURE Evening Post, 22 May 1880, p. 2. Lovers of art will do well to inspect some Maori paintings from the talented brush of Mr. Lindauer, which are now on view at the establishment of Mr. Myers, Lambton Quay. The paintings are three in number -- a portrait of the Hon. Wi Tako, M.L.C., a picture of a Maori wahine with child, and another of a young Maori belle, apparently not very long “out”. ... the spectator cannot fail to be struck with the capital expression of the Maori women and the chubby little “pickanniny”. ... It is worthy of remark that the handsome massive frames -- of a kind which it was hitherto been found necessary to import from Melbourne -- were manufactured on the premises of Mr. Myers, to whose establishment they do great credit. Gottfried Lindauer’s painting of Ana Rupene and her child has become an iconic image in New Zealand art. Lindauer, a Vienna-trained artist, arrived in New Zealand in 1874 and quickly became famous for his portraits of Māori leaders and personalities. This painting remains one of his most celebrated. Lindauer made up to 30 versions – one of which won a gold medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in Saint Louis, United States. The painting is based on a photograph of Ana Rupene Whetuki, also known as Heeni Hirini, of the Ngāti Maru iwi (tribe), which was taken at the Foy Brothers’ studio in Thames between 1871-1878. Studio portraits of Māori were often produced as ‘family collections’ of people from a region such as those ancestors from Pare Hauraki or the Thames region. The life dates of Ana Rupene are not known, however, we know she lived and died at Manaia on the Coromandel.

Private vendors continued 25 Johan Frederik Cornelis Scherrewitz (Dutch, 1868-1951) Unloading the Catch, Scheveningen oil on canvas signed ‘’JScherrewitz’ (lower right) 60 x 49cm $4,000 - 7,000 PROVENANCE Private collection, Kapiti Coast Johan Frederik Cornelis Scherrewitz was born in Amsterdam, 18th March 1868. He studied as a pupil of the landscape painter, Johan Diderik Cornelis Veltens (1814-1894) and George Jan Hendrik Poggenbeek (1853-1903).
Scherrewitz lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1898 before moving to Laren, followed by a sojourn in Haarlem before settling in Hilversum. Influenced early in his career by his teachers particularly Poggenbeek, Scherrewitz was renowned as a painter of the Dutch landscape. He was particularly known for his portrayal of the fisher folk and the coast of Holland, often depicting beached boats with fishermen unloading their catch under a leaden North Sea sky. Scherrewitz was highly regarded and successful as an artist; he was elected to the Academy of St. Luke and to the Society of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and exhibited widely. Between 1895 and 1903 he exhibited in The Hague, Amsterdam and Arnhem. He was widely collected in England and Scotland exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1907, Liverpool in 1909 and at the British Institution.

C F Goldie’s later career evolved independently of the Auckland Art World. Encouraged by the governor general, Lord Bledisloe, Goldie resumed painting around 1930, and embarked on the final body of work in his career. This distinctive period was marked by a warmer palette, looser brush and thinner paint application. He re-presented models he had first depicted decades earlier, with titles echoing earlier examples. The model of lot 26 Memories, Pipi Haerehuka (Te Arani, ?-1927) was a chieftainess of the Ngatitunuhopu hapu of the Arawa tribe. She was a direct descendant of Tamati Kapu, captain of one of the canoes that arrived c1350 and the daughter of Haerehuka, the Ngati Whakaue chief. Goldie first painted her in 1915, again in 1919, and continued to paint her after her death in 1927. Ignoring the Auckland Society of Arts and encouraged by his benefactor, Goldie sent three paintings to London for the 1934 exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. These were the present lot 26: Memories; as well as Thoughts of a Tohunga: Wharekauri Tahuna and An Aristocrat: Atama Paparangi. All three were selected, 'very well hung and much commented on' among the 1600 paintings on display. Placing high prices on his works, in order to maintain prestige, two of his 1934 oils for the Royal Academy were particularly steep: Thoughts of a Tohunga was £420 and An Aristocrat £393 12s 6d. An Aristocrat was sold to Lady Bledisloe for the nominal sum of 100 guineas before it left New Zealand. Notably, An Aristocrat was recently sold by Christies London, September 2013 for £313,875 ($720,000NZD). The present lot Memories sold to an English Lady, Miss H W Carnelly for the sum of 262, 12d at the Academy. It has remained in the same family collection until the present day and this is the first time it has been offered for sale post 1933. These publically celebrated works were duly reported in the local press, and brought acclaim to the status-conscious artist. In 1935 Goldie was awarded an OBE and the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal.

The narrative of this work begins and focuses on Tolaga Bay, the location of Cook’s first contact with New Zealand. He presents it as a metaphor of New Zealand and tilts normal perspective forward and in this way the Tolaga pier reaches out into the “pool of NZ life”. He peoples the surrounding and enclosing landscape with objects (Such as houses, flora and fauna); in the central foreground two Maori figures hongi; roads lead left to right. Everything is presented as being connected - the past, present and future; the land and the sea; rural and urban. This powerful, symbolic allegory of New Zealand has a predominant palette of greens, brown and ochres suggestive of a living and cohesive environment.

There were twelve works in the Landscape multiple series of 1968. Although called ‘Multiples’ each work was unique. With the exception of the eight Visible Mysteries, McCahon’s painting activity throughout 1968 concentrated on developing the landscape motif that had occupied him the previous year. In several series - Helensville, Landscape Multiples, South Canterbury - as well as a pair of Easter Island triptychs, he pursued an imagery that reduced these locales to their most basic elements.
