Expression: Elgin’s Dance Community

Corps Values Paintings hang on gallery walls and are then placed in storage. Music and theatre manuscripts, played or unplayed, collect in files and libraries. Sculptures bear silent witness to work done at another time and place. But dance is different. It scarcely exists apart from the bodies of the dancers, bodies whose movements serve as both composition and instrument, in an art of the present that’s perhaps the most intrinsically human of them all. As a language, it communicates the entirety of human experience: history, society, spirituality, and emotion.

An Unconquered Tradition We estimate there are well over 1,000 people in Elgin actively engaged in teaching, learning and performing an incredible variety of dance forms, which originated in cultures around the world. BFH is one group of 75 people of all ages dedicated to the folk dances of Mexico. “Folk dance, not just in Mexico but throughout the world, represents the need for humans to express feelings that can’t be expressed with words,” says Julian Hernandez, who formed BFH with his wife, Elgin native Cynthia G. Hernandez, in 1996.

Dance photography is a collaborative effort with the dancers to create a still photograph that illustrates a single moment from an art of movement. Lance’s Studio Photography explores the potential of a body’s movement within a space, pushing the dancer’s boundaries and architecting their sculptural physicality into a defining still photograph. Lance Long, owner of Lance’s Studio Photography, is a dance photographer in Elgin, IL that has been exploring photography for over two decades. With almost a decade of professional experience photographing dancers and dance companies, they dedicate themselves to their clients at every session. Their business is fully insured, uses professional equipment and can offer multiple studio and outdoor locations. Their work has been published locally and internationally, receiving numerous awards. and tradition are the costumes: 98% are made in Mexico. Though BFH may be best known locally by its appearances at the Elgin Fourth of July parade, they perform up to twenty times per year at private events (weddings and Quinceaneras) and have won numerous awards in national competitions. “All folk dances are important to us. For us there are two main types: pre-Hispanic and Traditional. The pre-Hispanic dances are from before the conquest and are basically very religious in nature. Traditional dances such as Jarabe Tapatio are the ones after the conquest.” BFH is celebrating its twentieth anniversary, which includes the last thirteen years as an in-residence ensemble at ECC. Until recently, the group was known as “Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl,” named after the Aztec god of music, dancing and singing. But dances from all regions and periods of Mexican history are honored with deep respect for the highly-protected tradition. “We use registered choreographies that require a permit for use, and we can’t change them,” Hernandez explains. “We also have some that are in the public domain — we can change the choreography, but not the steps.” Also true to national heritage

Opposite in many ways from ballet folklorico, the belly dance styles practiced by the dancers of Elgin’s Eastern Groove Studio reflect the fluid mixing of cultures in the crossroads of the Ancient World, and the uninhibited borrowing and blending of traditions as the dance was imported to America. “What falls under the term ‘belly dance’ is actually a vast array of dances and dance styles from different areas of the Middle East and North Africa,” says Christina King, owner of Eastern Groove. “It was given this name by Sol Bloom, who brought the first such dancers to the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. The name refers not to the bare bellies of the dancers (as they were fully clothed back then) but to the abdominal movements prevalent in our dance form that were simply not done in Western social dance or ballet.” From there, the art form evolved into cabaret-style dancing, migrated to the west coast through tourism and cinema, and was later reinvented by the California Renaissance Faire scene in the seventies to become

what’s now known as tribal style and fusion belly dance. “Belly dance at its root is an improvised solo dance,” King explains. “But ensemble dancing will involve quite a bit of choreography with perhaps some improvisation sprinkled in.” Either way, creativity is always front and center. “For a street festival or cultural show, we’d probably present more folkloric dances. We can also create glamorous numbers that harken back to the golden age of the Cairo scene in the 40’s or the American belly dance explosion of the 70’s.” Costuming for La Groove Fatale, Eastern Groove’s performance troupe, is also created as a fusion of purchased and hand-made items.

Though the perceived identity of belly dance is predominantly a feminine one, it’s not limited to female dancers or sensual imagery. The tradition also embraces men’s dance and a wide range of subject matter from martial movements to emotional interpretation.

Western Swing Regardless of style, movement and music go together and sometimes they share the same name: waltz, polka, march, minuet. In dance performance, they tend to follow parallel trajectories. “We use a blend of Middle Eastern and Western music,” King says regarding her dance music. And sometimes we just use straight-up Western music. Of course, our Classic belly

In the creative process of modern and contemporary concert dance however, movement can lead to music. Erin Rehberg, co-Founder of Side Street Studio Arts and Founder and Artistic Director of dance-based interdisciplinary arts company Core Project, described the relationship this way. “Often times, one hears a song and wants to make ‘something’ to that song. Other times, a movement can be created through improvisation or devising an exercise for a class, which develops into a work of its own. At times, it starts with a gesture and grows into an entire piece out of that gesture. Sound and movement and the need for either develop simultaneously.” And in some cases, one medium is best described in terms of the other.

“American Tribal Style® is a very special brand of belly dance that is group improvisation based on a specific vocabulary of movements and combinations that are physically cued by the dance’s leader to telegraph to the other dancers what piece of vocabulary will come next. In this way there are tiny pieces of choreography (the combos) that are put into sequence spontaneously as the dance progresses.” King agrees, it sounds like a description of jazz.

Yes, Pliés And jazz, too, is a style that almost every dancer will learn at some point in their journey. “Currently, the most popular genre we’re experiencing is Contemporary Jazz,” reports Elisabeth Stonebreaker McCoy, Cofounder of Integrity School of Dance in Elgin. “In the past, Lyrical or Modern was popular. More than anything, the dance world is experiencing a melding of different styles — choreography can even include acrobatics or tumbling skills.” And the art has never stopped sampling from the spontaneous and improvisational styles that emerge from amateur communities. The rise (and commercialization) of hip-hop culture has brought the energy of urban party dances to the attention of a new generation of artists and teachers. In studios around Elgin and elsewhere, ballet technique meets popping, locking and breaking in forms called new style or jazz-funk. However, “All dance instruction begins and ends with ballet,” Rehberg emphasizes. “You have to learn to follow the ‘rules’ first ... then you can learn to break them.” “Kelly Hill teaches most of our ballet classes, and is very authentic in her teaching, including theory,” McCoy says of her partner and Integrity Cofounder. “Many of our instructors have a professional background that includes an incredible amount

of knowledge that’s passed on through their teaching.” At Integrity and other studios, more than half the students are under age 12, yet the fastest growing segments may be teens and adults, who find it much easier to start exploring the art in a classroom among peers. It’s a clear indication of the role that dance has always played in civilization. As one dance dad put it, “There’s a social aspect to it.”

Taking the Next Step Class camaraderie is vital to the success of individual students, and necessary for ensemble performance — including dance competitions — which is an essential part of all arts instruction. Every Spring, hundreds of dancers will take the main stage at Elgin’s Hemmens Cultural Center to perform and compete. “We currently have six dance competitions, thirteen recitals and two Visharad (Indian dance and banquet) programs booked between February and August 2017, with many more turned away. This has been the case for as long as I’ve worked here.”

fully equipped stage, large dressing room area, free parking and a number of restaurants within walking distance.” It’s a professional quality performance experience that far exceeds the gymnasium band concerts and lunch room theatre that most schools can offer. For some Elgin youth dancers, it may be just the spark they need to ignite a passion for dance that becomes a professional pursuit, as it did for Kelly Hill, Erin Rehberg and others.

“Our Integrity Company is made up of our most serious dancers who acquire their position by audition,” says McCoy. “They train 5-6 days a week and attend three competitions per year.” These dancers may have to sacrifice junk food and a sizeable share of their social life in order to reach this level. “There’s something inside everyone who calls themself a dancer (young or old), that starts with drive,” says Rehberg. “So on those days when you don’t want to go to class, or are missing something important, it’s that drive to be a better technician, performer and artist that keeps you going. It’s exhausting ... and exhilarating.”

Hemmens Director Butch Wilhelmi is referring to his thirty years of experience, which is why he knows more about the operations than anyone. He attributes the Hemmens’ popularity with dance groups primarily to top-notch staff support.

Very few will follow that path for a lifetime, but each hour spent along the way, no matter what the distance, is a lesson in self-discipline, self-confidence, self-expression and accountability.

“We provide lighting, sound and stage management, as well as box office services if requested,” he says. “We also have a

Because of this philosophy, and Goin’ South’s penchant for southern-fried rock, finding musicians who can handle the material presents a challenge in itself. Power chords are fine for a lot of hard rock tunes, but Southern Rock usually consists of more difficult and intricate guitar playing. Playing this genre of music takes a high level of talent and commitment from the band members. Goin’ South happily rises to the challenge! 9p-11.59p, Grand Victoria Casino, 250 S. August 2016 duo from Chicago, IL. Austin and Hannah, both multi-instrumentalists and songwriters, had been writing and performing their music separately for years before ever meeting. Then, on that one fateful night in April 2012, they were both playing at a small show in the suburbs, and seemingly hit it off almost immediately. Other people in the venue noticed it too. Hannah even invited Austin on stage to sing with her, on a song he’d only heard once before earlier that evening! The rest is history and in the summer of 2012, they got married. Not even a month after their wedding they began the rigorous process of recording their first album, and in January of 2015, their album, Hills and Valleys, released worldwide. They are now in efforts of branching out and taking their music on the road for the world to hear. 12p-1p, Art & Soul Main Stage, DuPage Court

Bard in the Barn Acting Workshop The Bard in the Barn acting workshop is inspired by the annual performance of the same name that showcases unrehearsed Shakespeare performance techniques and is held on the Western Illinois University campus. The Bard in Barn workshop will introduce actors to techniques used by Shakespeare and his contemporaries. The experience relies on a new understanding of the relationship between actors and audience, and a deep appreciation of the clues hidden in the acting text, which allow the plays to be performed without rehearsal. Actors will learn how to use the cue script technique in performance, which will

lead them to new discoveries, while they create an immediate experience similar to the original performances. This will bring a spontaneity and improvisational quality to the show. The Comedy of Errorsis one Shakespeare’s earliest, shortest, and most farcical plays. The play is a comedy about mistaken identities and family reconciliations and is an excellent fit for Mural Alley. 1.30p, Mural Alley, downtown Elgin, 66 S. Spring Street janusplays.com. Mini-Media Guide: FEED 411

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good

chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED.

Elgin International Festival Elgin is made up of many cultures and nationalities so why not celebrate them all! The City of Elgin along with community leaders, is hosting an event in its fifth year that showcases our diversity from all around the world through ethnic food, music and entertainment, a “world market,” cultural arts and crafts and children’s activities. To discover more details in regards to this celebration please visit www.cityofelgin.org. 11a-7p, Riverside Promenade. Free

The technology is called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Ask your webmaster about it. Then tell us the URL (web address) of your calendar RSS feed, and we will take it from there.

Facebook Events We can access the events you create in your Facebook account, provided they are open, public events. All we need is your Facebook ID, which is a number consisting of 10-15 digits. You can determine this number by following the tips at findmyfacebookid.com (see link below).

Google Calendar If you have a Google account, you have free access to a suite of useful tools, including a calendar that can be accessed as an RSS feed. Edit your calendar settings and make your calendar public (or share it with us). You can obtain the URL of your calendar’s RSS feed by clicking the “XML” button. Boom! Send us that URL!

FEED.links http://www.marqueemedia.net/events Fill out the form with your event title, date, time, location, phone number, short description, and price. Your name, email and phone number are also required in case we need to double-check your details! http://www.findmyfacebookid.com Go to the Facebook profile page for your business. Copy the URL (web address) shown in your browser’s location field. Go to findmyfacebookid.com and paste your profile page URL into the box at the top of the screen. Click Submit. The next screen will display your Facebook ID. Send us that number.

According to ancient tradition, the universe was created by a poem, and human society began in a garden. Perhaps that explains why people have always been drawn together around plants for physical, spiritual and emotional sustenance. Or perhaps it’s a bit of the divine nature within us that rejoices in seeing life spring from a handful of dirt.

The Power of Flowers A hundred years ago in Elgin, this botanical force of attraction resulted in the formation of the Elgin Garden Club (EGC), a group of wives and daughters of business and civic leaders who wanted to beautify the community. The names of the charter members “reads like of Who’s Who of 1916 Elgin,” writes Cherie Murphy, author of EGC’s centennial history book 100 Years & Growing. The women were considered the “social elite and social conscience” of the City.

Society, is an incredible account of Elgin history as recorded by local women with a love of gardening. It documents the gradual shift from flower shows and exotic plant lectures to the club’s current emphasis on sustainable native flower gardening and prairie plant restoration. For the last nineteen years, EGC has managed the garden at the Elgin History Museum. It was designed to be historically correct for the period, and began with plants and shrubs donated by the members. A spring work day and weekly visits keep the garden growing. Another long term commitment, to native plant restoration at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, brings out gardeners from the area every

As society changed, so has the culture of EGC. “White gloves and canapes on the veranda have been replaced with baseball caps and tailgating,” says club member Reda Anderson, but the club’s mission has never gone out of style: “To cultivate the spirit of gardening in its fullest sense, together with an appreciation of civic beauty and betterment in and about Elgin.” Murphy’s book, published by the Elgin Area Historical

Birds, Bees & Butterflies A pair of vacant lots at the corner of Ann and Douglas streets on the northeast side could have been abandoned to litter, loitering and worse. The City acquired this property, and the local neighbors adopted the care and nurturing of it. It’s now known as the NENA Butterfly Garden, named for the Northeast Neighborhood Association whose members have created the formal plantings and restored native habitat with donated labor and materials supplied by the City. “We built the garden to provide a spot of beauty that would benefit people and wildlife,” says

NENA neighbor Kerry Kelly, who chairs the committee that oversees the garden. “Butterflies have had a rough few decades with habitat destruction and we can offer a small respite for them.” During a recent visit to the garden, NENA neighbor Medina Gross arrived to water flower beds. “If you want to attract birds,” she said, “you need pollenators, and to attract them you have to grow native flowers.” “Now we are focusing on the educational component, to attract more humans,” adds Kelly. The garden was recently enhanced with a series of butterfly identification signs, designed by Barbara Broeske using hand drawn illustrations and research done by McKinley Elementary School students. The work was produced during a three week summer lepidoptera camp devel-

that they are so shallow, they need to be watered every day.” But that’s a job that a shopkeeper can handle. Hulke hastens to add, “I’m more than happy to provide the plants, as long as they are appropriate.” Appropriate in this context usually translates to hardy annuals and native perennials. “The vast majority of our flowers are perennials, the idea being that the amount of maintenance required after the first couple of years will be very low,” explains Hulke. “We do use some annuals in certains places where we want a little more ‘pop’. We have fewer hanging baskets this year, but they are still there.” Most city landscape designs are originally provided by the contractors in charge of building and improvement projects, but occasionally Greg Hulke gets to do some design work to replace a damaged bed. Equipped with a green industry degree and ten years experience, he says, “I’ll choose plants that I know will do well in that location.”

Design of the Times “More and more landscapes, particularly around municipal and commercial buildings, are starting to use native plants for many reasons,” says Shirley Remes, a former gardening writer in South Elgin. “First of all, they are attractive. Secondly, they require much less maintenance. And thirdly, they use less water. It’s a win, win all around.” Having photographed and written about exceptional gar-

dens throughout the region, she is now a sought-after speaker and design expert. About her own community, she boasts, “I think people in Elgin and South Elgin love flowers and beautiful landscaping. In Elgin there are some amazing garden clubs!” And she points out that gardens are more than just plants. The use of benches, urns, arbors and hardscape is what puts the culture in horticulture. Her five rules for selecting garden decor reflect the principles of all good design: size, style, texture, material and placement. And she echoes the sentiments of other Elgin gardeners in saying, “Numerous people have told me over my many years as a garden writer, that they get a great sense of peace when they garden, so the hobby is a great stress reliever.” For those less interested in getting their hands dirty, she offers, “Horticultural theraphy experts have proven that just looking at greenery is not only relaxing, but healing — a big reason why many hospitals now emphasize attractive landscapes in their architectural designs.” “People live hectic lives,” adds Kerry Kelly, reflecting on the vision for the butterfly garden. “We hope to provide a tranquil corner where families can interact with nature.” For some of us, paradise is peace; for others it’s pizza; for others it’s communion with nature. However you define it — it starts in a garden. —JP
