Nancy Turpin-Marshall I have been creating art of all types my entire life and have almost always given my work away. Wonderful gifts that last a life time. Given to persons that I cherish as friends and loved ones. Very generous on my part, seeing that doing art can be very time consuming.
The news of postponement of the Chicago Ballet Conservatory’s The Nutcracker was not unexpected. Auditions scheduled for August 2020 were too soon in a coronavirus world. Out of an abundance of caution, auditions have been rescheduled for Sunday, August 8, 2021, with the performance now scheduled on December 4-5, 2021, at Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. The annual Nutcracker show is a massive undertaking including world class professional dancers and local dancers of all levels. Tressa Mohler, owner of the Conservatory, is the producer for the 2021 show. Linda Cunningham, longtime member of the Fox Valley dance world, is the director. Linda Cunningham recently sat down with me over some amazing Mexican cuisine to share what The Nutcracker means to her and the community. The dream is very much alive and waiting for some imagination to coax it into reality when the time is right. In many ways, The Nutcracker has defined Linda’s life. She
performed in The Nutcracker as a child. She has produced The Nutcracker, directed The Nutcracker and choreographed The Nutcracker many times over as an adult. Linda pours herself physically, emotionally and spiritually into The Nutcracker, and she draws out magic. Anyone who knows Linda intimately is aware that her vision for The Nutcracker grows year by year with a renewed vigor to bring new dreams to life. To hear her speak now, the expectancy deferred is only opportunity grow her vision for the show. Her performances are, indeed, the stuff of dreams, attracting world class dancers from the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Joffrey Ballet and Bolshoi Brazil. New York City dancer, Violetta Komyshan (longtime girlfriend of actor, Ansel Elgort), captured the essence of Linda’s Nutcracker in her handwritten note from 2019: “Your vision is spectacular, it is as bright, sweet and grand as your incredible personality.” Indeed, The Nutcracker is
I now look to sell my unique work to the general public or whomever might be interested. I have recently been doing art shows and events, and look to do many more. I am now doing work for personal clients, and do work on a commission basis as agreed. I call my works Newspaper Decoupage, a not so simple process. I cut up or shred pieces of newspaper and apply it to canvas using a painters brush and varnish. I create images, or works of art. My work looks like a painting until you get up close and realize it is some thing you may not have seen before. I hope that you enjoy what you are looking at. more than a performance to Linda Cunningham. The Nutcracker is about family, community, relationships and, most importantly, dreams. It’s not just about the dancers. Linda says, “It’s about dancing for those who can’t.” Indeed, Linda finds her inspiration in the personal story or Pyotr Tchaikovsky, whose score is made famous in the ballet. Tchaikovsky was discouraged to follow his passion by his own parents, but his beloved sister was always encouraging him. The two were very close. She wasn’t a dancer or the talent her brother was, but she became his muse. Affectionately called Sasha, his sister developed a sickness that profoundly affected the last 17 years of her life. Tchaikovsky was always concerned for her and visited her often.
Tchaikovsky struggled with The Nutcracker initially. It wasn’t coming together, and he dreaded the thought of having to finish the work he was commissioned to complete. During that time, Tchaikovsky embarked for an American tour from Paris, France. On the way, he learned his beloved sister had died. Tchaikovsky’s grief ebbed and flowed in and out of daydreams as he gazed for hours and days from the ship’s deck on the breathtaking vistas of the long ocean voyage. The mixture of grief and the mesmerizing beauty of his surroundings was all the catalyst for his inspiration. Tchaikovsky began to see his beloved Sasha in Clara, the little girl who falls into a deep sleep after fainting from injury (in the original story by E.T.A. Hoff-

Linda’s eyes gleam as she describes the point of one particularly difficult rehearsal where she fell back on stage, arms stretched wide, face to the heavens, at the end of her strength at one point in the midst of rehearsal. In that moment, overcome by the emotion, one little dancer broke from the regimen, ran across the stage and threw herself on Linda in a full body embrace. And thus, the magic was revived.

man). He saw himself in Uncle Drosselmeyer, the magician, who gives Clara the toy nutcracker that captures her heart, comes to life, and sweeps her into the sweet, grand dream of the second act. Though The Nutcracker opened to mixed reviews in the Christmas season of 1892, it has stood the test of time, becoming the most performed ballet in the world. Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is filled with divine reflections of life on earth. Though innocence ultimately fades and magic ends, Tchaikovsky suspends reality long enough to wipe away the tears. Those emotions are the essence of The Nutcracker, and Linda Cunningham feels them, lives them and lovingly draws them out of her cast, as she pours herself into the work of directing. The process is physically, emotionally, and spiritually demanding. Such is the stuff of which real dreams are made.
The Nutcracker is community, remembrance of loved ones, beauty in the face of inevitable death and dreams that live on. These were Tchaikovsky’s inspiration, and they are every bit of Linda Cunningham’s vision and more. Jason Sandquist, who played Drosselmeyer in Linda’s 2017 production of The Nutcracker, wrote to her quoting Roald Dahl, “In a world that seems so frightening there is a world that you give us so extraordinary. You take strangers and create families.”

Family and community are, ultimately, what The Nutcracker is about. In that vein, Linda invites and embraces those of us “who could’ve, should’ve and would’ve, but never did” — people who dreamed of dancing but never did. She finds a place for those willing to try, whether it is onstage or behind the scenes. The Nutcracker is truly unique in its embrace of everyone, from world class professional
dancers, to young local dancers with dreams in their eyes, to those who maybe did not dare to dream quite so much or didn’t have the opportunity. In a world such as this, locked down against the threat of a world pandemic, isolated, fearful, angry and depressed, in a world filled with racial tension, polarization, protests and rioting, The Nutcracker promises hope to the dreamer in all of us. Linda’s Nutcracker is traditionally true, while capturing the heart and passion of the inspiration Pyotr Tchaikovsky found to finish the ballet after his beloved Sasha’s death. With hopes and dreams of the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets deferred, the absence is sure to make Linda’s heart grow fonder and her vision to grow larger for The Nutcracker show in December of 2021 at the Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin. As Linda Cunningham might say: the show must go on! For all the dancers and the dreamers, the show will go on! —KD

Elgin Cultural Arts Commission
Audience Survey Results by Elgin Cultural Arts Commission The Elgin Cultural Arts Commission sent out a survey at the end of May to assess the needs and comfort level of our community for returning to cultural arts events in Elgin. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, artists and cultural organizations have been eagerly anticipating performing and communicating with a live audience again. Technology has been an awesome band aid for what has been ailing us, but there is no way to replace the intimate communication of an in-person event or performance. This pandemic is a national and local crisis but it is also a transition, where we all are going to experience some change. If we move through this transition with care and intention, we hope that we can come through this time of adversity stronger than before. So, thank you for taking part in the survey. We had over 700 local responses and we want you to know that your voice is important to us and all of the local arts organizations that received the survey results.

The Elgin Cultural Arts Commission’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in our community by creating and supporting diverse, innovative, and accessible visual, performing, and cultural arts programming while taking on the challenges our field faces to emerge stronger from this crisis. Here is what you had to say‌ 74% would attend an outdoor event before a vaccine is available with social distancing and enhanced cleaning. The top 3 accommodations most important to you as a patron were: 1. Requiring masks or cloth face coverings in public areas 2. Additional hand sanitizing stations and 3. Theater seating limited to every other seat in every other row. As far as attending an artistic or cultural event virtually instead of physical attendance, it’s pretty split that about 50% are either unlikely or neutral on attending a virtual event. Only about 25% are some version of likely to pay for a virtual event. Of that number, the most common price range was $5-$10.

Lastly, you may have seen the banners and yard signs that were created by local artists, Ivette De Santiago and Adrian Mesino and were sponsored by the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission. The banners are located near
the entrances of both area hospitals and the yard signs are available for Elgin residents to display. You can request a sign by visiting the Elgin Area Chamber website and completing a short form.

Tourism Marketing During COVID-19 by Krisilee Murphy Why is it so important to market vacations, sporting tournaments and weddings when venues are not quite ready to fully open again? Most leisure trips to the Elgin area including hotel stays were booked two to three weeks out from the date of travel prior to COVID-19. However, people will research a destination for up to six months in advance before they even book a hotel room. Weddings are usually booked at least nine months before, but normally closer to one year out because of the time it takes to plan the event. Tournament directors usually accept bids to host a tournament one to two years before the event is set to take place. So it is important to keep inspiring visitors to come to the Elgin area through marketing campaigns and telling the story of our destination so we can stay “top of mind” for potential travelers and win that future business.
change the scenery. Seventeen convention and visitors bureaus across the state are partnering together to create weekly road trip ideas with very specific themes such as hiking trails, farmers’ markets and golf. Every week the Elgin Area CVB is submitting one business or attraction to spotlight as part of this campaign. Each CVB is then promoting the joint post and sharing with the media to spread the word. All are publishing new content every Tuesday.
All of the research is showing that road trips will be the first travel market to return. We have already seen people itching to get out of the house and go anywhere that they can, just to

to reassure the consumer that it is safe to travel when the government reopens the state in the different phases.
Sports Marketing We learned during the economic slowdown that happened during 2008 and into 2009 that while leisure vacation and business travel came to a halt, families still invested in the traveling teams of their kids. Recently we entered a contest to win a complimentary video to promote our destination to tournament directors and we won! This video will be used on our social media outlets and website to help promote the services we offer tournaments directors. Sports Planning Guide will also be boosting the video on their social media outlets over the next couple of months. The video can be viewed on our website.

We’ll Be Ready For You is a campaign focused on encouraging potential visitors to use this time at home researching our destination: the 2020 Visitors Guides, itineraries offered on ExploreElginArea.com and our blogs. We have created content to inspire their next trip and we will be ready for visitors when it is safe to travel. Social media images and Zoom backgrounds were made for all 10 of the communities represented by the Elgin Area CVB and some of our key markets (sports, weddings, etc.).
Mini Campaigns with Small Businesses A 14-Day Yoga Challenge was created with Reverse the Kerrs Farm and Goat Yoga Chicago (Elgin) in May to acknowledge Mental Health Month. A Quarantine Playlist was created to spotlight Rediscover Records and the fun everyone could have listening to music from home (on vinyl from Rediscover Records). An organization over 40 years old naturally has some time-honored traditions. The playing of The Turtle Dove as the season farewell is one of the most beloved of those traditions, which began on a concert tour through Wisconsin and Minnesota in 2000. The Youth Symphony learned to sing the old folk song upon which it is based and on that tour grew to love the piece as “the best way to say goodbye.” Thus, an EYSO tradition was born.

Shared Values: The Love of Money
A Short History of the Elgin Doller The program being proposed was different than the original concept in which the Elgin Doller was issued by an Elgin Doller Exchange and was actually backed by real dollars in an informal way. BRAVO was proposing to print the Dollers in the magazine and invite businesses to accept them in cash transactions.
An article first published in BRAVO in October, 2015 entitled “Cash is Cool” suggested that paper money could make a comeback and become a tool for developing a local economy. Nicknamed the “Elgin Doller,” the hypothetical currency in the writer’s thought experiment was envisioned to display artwork that would highlight Elgin’s past, present and future.
Series 2018(b) The forerunner of the first official Doller was redesigned in June of 2018. It’s obverse now had Kimball’s portrait in the center, with an Elgin pocket watch face on the left and Father Time in the center of a seal bearing the Latin inscription urbs animadvertare, meaning “the city to watch.”
COMMUNITY OF ELGINLANDIA
I
Samuel J. Kimball
The river background was retained from the original design, as was the Doller symbol. New inscriptions included “The City to Watch,” “#spurious” and the title “Community Discount Coupon.” A violin appeared in composite.
Series 2015 The first design’s obverse featured a portrait of Samuel J. Kimball, a member of one of Elgin’s founding families and its first Constable. The center of the note featured the Great Seal of Elginlandia with its illustration of Father Time borrowed from the Elgin National Watch Company.
Marquee Media, publishers of BRAVO, hid their telephone number in the simulated serial number T224-5131220. The Northern Illinois Hospital and Asylumn for the Insane was featured on the reverse, against a printed circuit board
This note, with its rippling river background, QR code and novel Elgin Doller symbol, was never produced. There was never a design for the reverse and the name “Elginlandia” — fashioned after the title of an offbeat cable television comedy series — never really caught on.
To mark our third anniversary, BRAVO Magazine will introduce the Elgin Doller in our July 2018 edition. We’ll print one Elgin Doller in every issue.
Series 2018(a) Two and a half years later, BRAVO began running a half page advertisement with the headline “Do You Accept the Elgin Doller?” featuring a picture of local hip-hop artist Moore and the logo from his 2017 album Shop Local. Three Elgin Dollers appeared in the ad, identical to Series 2015 except bearing the imprint Series 2018. Ironically, the wording did not actually appear in the ad because of the placement and position of the notes. The ad ran for three months, and is remembered for the pull quote, “This might be the dumbest idea we’ve ever had. Or not.”

background, surrounded by an egg-and-dart border, Doller symbol and QR code that would link a camera-equipped mobile device to www.elgindoller.com. An inscription read “God Save Us From Prosection By The United States of America.” The note was never printed and exists only in digital design form.
“Do you accept the Elgin Doller?” This currency-like looking double-sided note is a beautifully designed tribute to the past, present and future of Elgin. Using a sharp scissors or hobby knife, you simply cut the Doller out of its page in BRAVO, and put it in your wallet, pocket or purse.

wrapped stick of butter appeared on the right. The page where the Doller appeared remained largely unchanged for two years, as between 12-16 businesses (some spurious) enjoyed a free display ad in exchange for accepting the Elgin Doller.
The Series C was depicted in the Winter 2019-2020 edition of The Centinel (Volume 68, Number 4), accompanied by a writeup that pointed out the tribute to Elgin’s earlier numismatic history in Rovelstad’s “Pioneer Half.”
The experiment was intended to run for just twelve months, ending in June 2019, but businesses urged BRAVO to continue the program for another twelve months, finding that the value of the display ad more than offset the loss of a few real dollars of discounted revenue during the month.

2018 Series A.
2018 Series A Regular advertisers in BRAVO received a mailing in the Spring of 2018, containing an actual sample Elgin Doller printed on newsprint paper from Hobby Lobby. Less than fifty of the notes were produced — notably without knowledge or permission — in a nondescript office on Highland Avenue. Identified as 2018 Series A, this design introduced the inscription “Un Doller” and a simulated watermark of a woman’s face decorated for Dia de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”). A composited fox image replaced the redundant “One” inscription from the previous design, and the commemorative “Pioneer Half Dollar,” designed by Trygve Rovelstad in honor of Elgin’s Centennial replaced the pocket watch face, accompanied by the Latin ars monetae, meaning “money art.” The reverse introduced a simulated watermark of a Nightmare on Chicago Street zombie beneath scattered roman numerals. This limited edition note was never officially circulated, and none are known to exist.
From its first official issuance in July 2018 (BRAVO 4.7) through September 2019 (BRAVO 5.9), the Elgin Doller was printed on 27.7# newsprint, a common paper substrate for newspapers and tabloids. In October 2019, in connection with cover artwork by Esther Kim, BRAVO began using 50# offset paper for some pages. Doller savers were surprised to find a new doller design in BRAVO 5.10, published in October 2019, appearing on the new, brighter paper. community

Circulation Elgin Dollers were printed for 24 continuous months, from July, 2018 through June, 2020. An estimated 80,000 Dollers were circulated in the pages of the magazine, though it is not known how many were used in local transactions. Anecdotes from many of the participating businesses indicated that the Doller was changing hands. Each Doller spent served to confirm that BRAVO was being read in the community and advertisements were being seen.

The portrait of Samuel J. Kimball was replaced with that of an unknown woman, wearing traditional makeup for Dia de los Muertos. Hers was the face of the original simulated watermark, which was replaced on this limited run of 4,500 notes by that of the late Filiberto Martinez, a patriarch of Elgin’s Mexican-American community.
2018 Series B The “Butter Note” Five thousand Elgin Dollers first entered the local economy with the publication of BRAVO 4.7 in July of 2018. The version labeled 2018 Series B was essentially the same on the obverse, but the reverse now bore the inscription, “Guaranteed by the Elgin Board of Trade, Payable to the Bearer on Demand, One Tablespoon Grade A Butter.” A quarter pound

The user returns to the Facebook post and clicks Like, then adds the comment, “Cool. Proud to live in a city that defends my privacy.”
“Thank you, Mayor. This resolution authorizes the execution of a contract with Pinnacle Environmental Services as the provider of the secure document and digital media disposal services. What I want to know is, if they have been thoroughly screened and vetted.” “Yes, in fact Councilor Price-Jenkins has direct experience with Pinnacle’s services. Val, would care to elaborate?” “Well, any law office like mine has a lot of confidential documents to destroy, and we use Pinnacle for that. You just call, and they come and pick up boxes of files. They’ve taken old computers, too. We’ve been very satisfied.” “Do they shred it on the spot? While you watch?” asks Andermayer. “Ah ... no, it’s taken to a central facility where everything gets sorted and destroyed.” “Have you been to that facility?” “No, I have not.” “Mayor, if I may?” “Chair recognizes Councilor

Does this program expose us to liability if someone’s information is not disposed of correctly?” “It’s Pinnacle’s liability,” says Price-Jenkins, “it’s all thoroughly spelled out in the contract.” “Contract or no contract,” huffs Andermayer, “Believe me, if somebody’s data gets stolen or leaked, they’ll be coming after City Hall. Believe you me.” “If in Val’s legal opinion the contract is solid, then I don’t see how we can turn this down,” offers Greeley. “According to Apex, there seems to be a huge demand for it in spite of the tax increase.” Kromberg raises his hand. “Speaking of demand ...”

And the five ton estimate was based on a comparison with Pearston, where Pinnacle has a similar contract in place.” “Does the budget account for an increase?” “No it does not. We’d have to make adjustments in the 2022 budget.” Mayor Sheilds calls for a vote on the resolution and it passes 5-1, with Andermayer dissenting. From Area Police Reports Clerk Assaulted Police were called to the MyRex Pharmacy at 405 Tietermeyer Avenue on a report of an assault in progress. According to witnesses, a white female in her 30’s purchased a box of wine and a package of C-size batteries, then became enraged suddenly when the clerk handed her a very long cash register tape.
companies from Elgin and Plato Townships used 700 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. The home was unoccupied at the time of the incident and there were no injuries. An investigation determined that a combination of faulty wiring and a buildup of methane gas caused the explosion.
The 26 year old male employee told officers that the woman shouted obscenities, climbed on the counter and put the long strip of paper around his neck, trying to strangle him. He was not harmed in the incident and refused medical attention. The woman, Nicole Findlay, age 33 of Elgin, was cited for disorderly conduct and detained by police. Recovered at the scene was a cash register tape measuring nine feet in length, which included 16 coupons, five cross-marketing promotions, four maps of other MyRex Pharmacy locations, two survey barcodes, two new product announcements, a rebate form, a customer referral form, a loyalty program points summary, a return policy, three missing person notices, a COVID-19 safety statement, “Meet Your Store Manager” and “Tips for Better Health.”
Green House Explosion The 911 call center received multiple reports of an explosion in a house at N52W8493 Holcombe Road. When crews arrived at the scene, the structure was fully engulfed in flame. Six large solar panels mounted to sections of the roof were found among the debris on the property. Engine

The security guard stated that the employee greeted the male customer in Spanish when he entered the store. The man, a 42 year old seismologist from Tajikistan, bristled at the foreign language greeting and began a lengthy diatribe in English, directed at the employee. When police arrived, the suspect was bullying and belittling the employee amid coarse lectures on multilingualism in the former Soviet states. The employee claimed the entire incident was caused by mistaking the man for Guatemalan. No charges were filed. The customer was escorted to his car, and the store manager was advised to provide additional sensitivity training to staff, and move all corkscrews, foil cutters and cocktail skewers behind the counter.
Missing Fish Homeowner William Wiesen, age 62, was attempting to live “off the grid” using alternate energy sources, including a solar-powered home electrical system, and a homemade natural gas generator for cooking and heating. In the basement, an estimated three tons of manure was found enclosed in a masonry structure connected to a furnace, a stove and 17 automobile batteries. Wiesen was arrested on multiple outstanding warrants after returning to the home.
Mistaken Identity A store security guard at the Grant Street Bev-Mart called police for assistance when a customer threatened to remove an employee’s tongue with a corkscrew.
An animal care manager alerted police detectives when a marijuana odor at the Fox River Aquarium led her to discover bedding, drug paraphernalia and a camp stove in a basement workshop used for building displays. Additionally, three bullheads were missing from the children’s touch tank in the “Sloughs and Backwaters” exhibit. Detectives later determined that 28 year old Korbin Vanderhooven, a furloughed employee, had been living at the facility since shortly after it was closed to visitors in March. Vanderhooven admitted to cooking and eating the three fish at an unauthorized gathering with friends at the Aquarium during Memorial Day weekend. He was cited for criminal trespass and fishing without a license.

BRAVO 6.6 was our 60th issue, marking five successful years of publishing. What started out to be primarily an events calendar has evolved into a magazine with original feature articles, interviews, creative writing, visual art, satire, festival programs and more.
150,000 residents, a magazine like BRAVO should have more than 6,000 readers per month; there’s probably enough subject matter around us to fill three magazines; and it’s time to refresh the graphic design that looks like it was done by a middle-aged white guy.
We have met dozens of fascinating people and given many artists their first interview, and many writers their first chance to be published. It has been a rewarding journey.
For these reasons, we are looking for someone to write “the next chapter” for BRAVO. The job requires skills in print production, knowledge of basic business procedures, and talents for writing, design, and photography. So far it has worked well for one person to handle everything, but it is a demanding hobby even for someone with patience and passion.
But it has been a labor of love for almost everyone involved. BRAVO has been successful because of volunteer effort. Every piece of cover art was lent or donated by an artist; every article was contributed by someone who loved to write; and most of the events in our lengthy and detailed calendar were keystroked into Facebook or a website by someone else. Apart from the startup costs and a few small bailouts along the way, BRAVO has been paid for by the advertisers who had confidence in our audacious project to create a sense of place for the Elgin area with a print-only publication you could only find in a cafe, library, art gallery or store. A lot has been accomplished, and there is still so much potential. For an area with about
Our Founder, Editor and Publisher Jeffrey R. Pierce will stay on through the end of 2020, and would like to turn over the BRAVO legacy to new ownership in early 2021. The Inner Craft
Part Three in a Series on Ritual for Artists
Four Questions by Michael J. Murschel, SD I recently listened to a wonderful podcast on intellectual honesty. Intellectual honesty? Simply defined, intellectual honesty means you consistently seek out the truth, and are willing to accept it as truth whether or not that truth agrees with your own personal beliefs. It can mean you acknowledge that you might not have all the answers, and that the assumptions you have made to get to the answers you do have, or thought you had, might after all be a weak platform upon which to construct an opinion which can be used for the greater good. Or, you might discover that your platform is basically sound. You might have bits and pieces of really good things which need to be drawn together by understanding other elements of the equation in different ways, from different perspectives, and more tailored circumstances. But enough of that. The point here is that the podcast set forth four questions which can be of huge value to us as artists. These four questions can challenge us. Reframe our thoughts. And maybe, if we choose to listen to the answers we get, maybe even make our art stronger than ever it was before. And even though it is good to get outside opinions, these four questions might just be the sort of questions you need to ask yourself in the privacy of your self. I have recast these questions into wording appropriate for the arts.
1. What will happen if I create this work of art? 2. What won’t happen if I create this work of art? 3. What will happen if I don’t create this work of art? 4. What won’t happen if I don’t create this work of art?
Simple questions, on the surface. Much more involved when you dig down into them. They are capable of drawing forth postulates, those things which assume or invite an understanding or construct of a basis for belief, reason, discussion, and perhaps even that all too elusive thing we call truth, though the exact nature of that truth assumes a lot from its very expectation. At the very least, these questions can get us to think our art through with an eye to understanding the net effects it will or won’t have if we do or don’t produce it. To that end, the fourth question might hold the most significance: “What won’t happen if I don’t create this work of art?” Does that imply that part of the world will not be brought into being? That something vital will be left to wither? That other people, places, and causes will be left unrequited? It is sort of like the scenario of that well-loved holiday movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. What would the world be like if you were never, nor had you ever been in it? Everyone is here for some good and noble reason, some grand purpose, some profound ripple to make on the
surface of the universe. And only you are specifically designed to do that. Ultimately, it’s up to you to discover what that is, and what you can do to serve the greater good. It seems, at least to me, as if that process of discernment just might begin by facing those four questions. So, let’s modify that fourth question: “What won’t happen if I don’t answer these four questions?” But there is one thing I do know for certain: Only you can answer that. David McFadzean is a successful television producer and writer, film producer, and playwright best known for co-creating the ABC situation comedy (“sitcom”) Home Improvement starring Tim Allen. He also produced such films as Bernie starring Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, What Women Want with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, and Where the Heart Is starring Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd. Back in the late 1980s, however, McFadzean was a professor and head of the theatre department at Judson College in Elgin when one day he received a call from his friend Matt Williams. The two were roommates when studying for their bachelor’s degrees in acting at the University of Evansville in Indiana.
to Elgin and convinced me he needed me because he thought I was good with story and character, regardless of how funny my writing was,” McFadzean said. After visiting McFadzean in Elgin for a few days, Williams told him, “I really like Elgin. This is the kind of town that I think this show has to take place in.” Between the initial phone call and the Elgin meeting, actress and comedian Roseanne Barr had joined the project as the star, and the show would be renamed Roseanne. Williams was rewriting the show to fit Barr’s character, and he decided that she was going to work in a plastics factory. “Which Elgin had,” McFadzean said. “We contacted human resources in one of the factories, and they sent over six women who worked there. We sat down with them and for about two days we spent hours and hours
Williams spent two years as a writer for The Cosby Show before deciding to create a new sitcom, tentatively called Life and Stuff. McFadzean had moved from the San Diego, CA, area, where he worked as a playwright, to teach at Judson. In the phone call, Williams asked McFadzean to come to New York City and do a rewrite on the new show. “And I said no,” McFadzean recalled, laughing. “I had not done comedy and I’m not that funny.” Williams, however, refused to accept McFadzean’s rejection. “A couple weeks later, he flew

quickly realized the dynamics of the writers’ room and where I could fit in, forming characters and their stories. And everybody respected that.” McFadzean originally took a leave of absence from Judson, but his career in television, film, and theater took off and he left the university permanently. He remembers his time at Judson and in Elgin fondly.
Elgin “is definitely the town that Matt based the show on,” McFadzean said. “He loved everything about it because it was a blue collar town, but it had so much more than just blue collar to it. It had that mix that we wanted to have. He spent a lot of time just walking and talking to people so that Elgin became Roseanne’s town” of Lanford.
After earning two theatre degrees, his bachelor’s at the University of Evansville and his master’s at Illinois State, McFadzean worked as a playwright, director, and theatre manager for Lamb’s Players Theatre in Coronado, CA, near San Diego. His host of theatre duties “started getting in the way of my writing,” McFadzean said. A former high school teacher, he decided to seek a teaching job in which he could continue to write on the side.
After joining the Roseanne team, McFadzean first went to New York to do a rewrite on the pilot episode, and then to Culver City in California to work on more episodes. “I walked into the writers’ room in Culver City, and I was a playwright and college professor, and here were five seasoned Hollywood writers — three of them extraordinarily funny,” McFadzean said. “At first I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into?’ But I

bought props for plays there. We liked the river and the downtown area. Elgin was so family friendly.”
“I was there for only three years, but those three years really worked out well in terms of the discipline of teaching and the discipline of writing,” McFadzean explained. “My writing focus helped me focus on teaching objectives, and I got to direct plays, which I’ve always loved.”
Son James, also known as “Court,” was born in Elgin. “We were socked with one of those Elgin snowstorms,” McFadzean recalled. “I ended up snowed in at the hospital, and my sister-inlaw, who lived in another town, tried to drive home but had to come back to Elgin because of the snow.”
It turned out that McFadzean “was a one-person theatre department,” he said. He credits his wife, Liz, for providing him with a great deal of help. “Thank goodness I was married to a woman who has her theatre degree, and who was actually a wonderful actress and really talented scene designer. She also learned costuming as we went along. So we became a two-person department and we produced nine or ten plays and it was a very good experience.” McFadzean noted that “lots of people think that a small Christian college like Judson, which draws a lot of students from rural counties in the Midwest, has folksy, unsophisticated students.

That’s wrong. My students were very bright. They challenged me in terrific ways. They were so eager to learn, so curious, and so talented, I had trouble keeping up with them.” He and his family also loved Elgin. “In San Diego, we owned an 800-square-foot house,” McFadzean recalled. “In Elgin, we could afford at least twice the square footage; we thought we were get-
ting a mansion. We lived on Oak Street on the south side.” College professors, “particularly just starting out, don’t make much money, so our entertainment was in our neighborhood,” McFadzean said. “We liked eating at Al’s Café and Creamery, a sandwich shop in Elgin, and at the Milk Pail restaurant in Dundee. I was very familiar with a used furniture store on North State Street because I
In Elgin, daughter Meredith “learned to ride a bicycle,” McFadzean said. “My daughter and son learned what it was like to jump into a pile of leaves and how to build snowmen. We attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in St. Charles. So church, the neighborhood, and that sandwich shop were kind of our triangle. “We met a lot of good people in Elgin, whom we’re friends with to this day,” McFadzean concluded. Much like the good people who are the characters on Roseanne/ The Conners. —WSB
