Shared Values: Working Alone Together

Jointly and Severally Viable Great ideas come to each of us from time to time — ideas for a product, a service business, or even a work of art. And sometimes the only obstacle to realizing those ideas is a lack of the right space, the right equipment or the right input from others. Those don’t have to be dreamstoppers in Elgin, because there are places where you can take your idea and develop it, thanks to another great idea put into action by local entrepreneurs: coworking spaces. These are facilities where multiple people can work independently and share the use of space or specialized equipment that’s too large or expensive to have at home. The idea isn’t that different from the workings of a high school wood shop, college computer lab, or membership-based fitness center.

“As an artist I often feel as though I am taking the long way home. Every piece represents a different journey, provoking questions and new lessons, each fueling a desire to see what comes next. This anticipation, this discovery, is what above all else drives my art and produces works that are woven with affection and passion. Each sculpture or painting is more than a piece of art — it is an intimate reflection of a newly discovered adventure.”

Catering to Cooks The kitchen tables of America have seen some pretty great ideas come to life, but once you’re ready to take your rhubarb cookies and zucchini salsa beyond the Downtown Harvest Market, you’ll need more muscle than your old Kenmore appliances can provide. You’ll need a commercial kitchen.

will not allow creative home cooks to sell their products in supermarkets. Recent Illinois law permits a small number of homemade products to be sold only at farmers’ markets: jams, jellies and baked goods. Total annual sales of these goods is capped at $36,000. Every other food product or business not within these limits must comply with a host of tightly regulated food safety requirements that include training, inspections, and licensing. Dream Kitchen is one of about 150 shared-used kitchens across the country, and the only one that serves the Fox Valley area, with kitchens in Elgin and Lake in the Hills. A third kitchen is located in Schaumburg. It’s an idea whose time has come. “Chicago just announced a $2.2 million public/private initiative called The Hatchery Incubator,” said Kevin Echevarria of Elgin, owner of Dream Kitchen. “Our company is in the running to consult and manage the shared operations at The Hatchery.”

You can build your own for a small fortune, or you can schedule time at Dream Kitchen, the shared-use facility on Fleetwood Drive in Elgin. At Dream Kitchen, you not only have the necessary high volume cooking and storage systems, you also have the crucial Health Department licensing that permits your product to be sold at retailers. That license is kind of a big deal. Locally sourced and artisan foods are a fast-growing segment in the industry, yet most states

Dream Kitchen

The high cost of setting up a commercial kitchen is the biggest obstacle for food entrepreneurs. Dream Kitchen is your incubator kitchen solution.

The term “kitchen incubator” actually encompasses more than just a shared-used kitchen. It extends to every other aspect of building a food-based business. Dream Kitchen now offers structured business training through Dream Kitchen EDU, and branding and marketing support through Your Dream Brand, which are part of the Dream Kitchen food startup “ecosystem.” “Our team is on a mission to help you launch correctly,” he said.

Moveable Feasts Another trend in food service is the pop-up restaurant. Permanent brick-and-mortar establishments are no longer the only way to do business. “Social media is making it extremely easy for people to promote themselves and their take on food. I call them Instagram or Facebook restaurants,” Echeverria told us. A maverick chef can book a venue for a few hours, sell out a specific number of plates in pre-orders and operate a restaurant one night at a time. “The feeling among these operators is not to have a traditional food business like we know it. It’s literally a model built on what works for them.” The venue can be a food truck, which Dream Kitchen has available for rent, or an actual dining room complete with tableware, servers, and dishwashers. Echevarria runs Localvore in downtown Elgin for this purpose. Sofrituras, a Puerto Rican food startup, tested their concept at Localvore

and Legit Hotdogs has been touring the area in the food truck.

Silicon Salad The incubator concept is better known by its impact on technology startups since the 1980’s. The advent of personal computing led to explosive growth in software development, and young entrepreneurs needed coaching, support services, and capital investment in order to bring their ideas to market. They found it in west coast office parks where academic, finance and marketing professionals could collaborate. Technology itself began to lower many barriers for startups and enhance the mobility of workers. Since that time, the shared-use office has evolved into variants that offer private suites with shared reception and meeting rooms; or open concept work tables with shared printers, copiers and kitchenettes; or former corporate cubicle space that hosts a collection of symbiotic microbusinesses. One of the first of such places in the area was the Elgin Technology Center (ETC), started in 2011 by Lasse Ingebretsen. He arranged to use the vacant second floor of the Elgin Tower Building as a place for new tech businesses to get started with very little cost or commitment. Consisting of private offices and shared common areas, the ETC had eight tenants and 130 members after six months, with hopes of becoming a high-tech hub supporting 115 local businesses by 2015.

“I’m very hopeful that Elgin is going to be the next tech innovation center in the Chicagoland region,” Ingebretsen said at that time. The Tower Building landlord hoped that growing businesses would eventually move to larger spaces on the upper floors.

Getting Fired ETC’s first three years in the Tower Building witnessed many physical improvements, continued interest and growth. Members traded sales leads, worked projects together and conducted seminars, but the vision of becoming a center of innovation did not materialize. Solo businesses of various kinds were using the

“Every year since I became Executive Director in 2012, the Board discussed changing the name of ETC,” explained Michael Copeland. “In 2015, they decided it may be a good time, and the name ‘Ignite’ was chosen.” They first started using the name as the title of a monthly entrepreneurs’ meetup at their new, better facilities at 73 S. Riverside Drive.

Really good wifi and internet access top the list of amenities people are looking for at Ignite, along with meeting rooms, private calling areas, kitchenette, printers, fax and a personal mailbox. It caters to solo businesses, telecommuters and others who can’t work at home because they are too easily distracted, or they thrive on the energy of being around other busy professionals

At about the same time, another coworking center opened on the second floor at 11 Douglas Avenue. Called “Envisage Coworking,” it was connected to the expanding network of businesses spawned by Echevarria’s Dream Kitchen. The two organizations officially merged in May 2017 at the Douglas Avenue location under the name Ignite. “We’re looking for people who want to work where they feel comfortable, can get things done, and connect with others,” said Copeland, now Managing Partner of Ignite. “A place where they can collaborate and maybe make something new.”

to stay motivated and get work done. Another case for Ignite’s office coworking concept is agile workgroups. For small businesses (or departments within larger ones) whose staffing needs change from month to month, the coworking format offers fluid adjustments in space and cost according to the team’s size. Studies of commercial real estate have shown that a well-run coworking space can generate more revenue per square foot than subdividing the same space. After converting unused downtown office space to the coworking format, Ignite has created a model that could be repeated in other cities where large vacant offices are priced out of reach for any single small business.

Back to the Drawing Board A similar type of conversion has taken place at the corner of Spring Street and Ziegler Court, where two empty storefronts now house the Side Street Studio Arts (SSSA) Lab and Supply Store. The Lab is a membership-based shared art studio, equipped with

tional, the social component is even more powerful here than at other coworking spaces. Beginners’ classes, critique nights, multigenerational activities and informal social interactions build trust within the Lab. “Folks feel comfortable and safe in the lab with our artist-educators,” said Rehberg, “which we feel is one of our greatest areas of success.”

A Hatching Scheme The market price of coworking membership in Elgin starts at $150 per member per month, or about $100 per month with a 12-month commitment. Upgrades and add-ons like private storage are available at all of these facilities, and 24x7 entry is available with some plans. Ironically, the real goal of

The Supernaturals were on the road giving concerts at universities and churches in an effort to raise awareness about what is happening in Syria. Bassel’s music had always dealt with personal feelings and experiences, and suddenly nothing was more personal than the war in Syria, so he started writing about that. Through combining his concerts with informal question and answer sessions, where no question is “out of bounds”, Bassel discovered he could help those in the United States connect with people profoundly affected by war half a world away. Bassel & The Supernaturals, is a multi-piece band that includes horns, keys, bass, guitar and drums, and was featured at the 2016 and 2017 South by Southwest Festival in Austin, TX. Greyhound, the Grey Ghost Foaled in 1932, Greyhound was an ungainly colt, with no one realizing how fast he could run. At the beginning of each race, he went to the top spot and stayed there. He was considered the greatest trotter of all time, with some world records still held by him, even though he died in 1962. When he retired Col. Baker, of St. Charles, had a special stable built and allowed people to come observe him, relaxing in his retirement. Col. Baker had Greyhound buried at his Red Gate farm. This story presented by Vanessa Bell Lasoto is lively and full of information about Greyhound. Born in Savannakhet Province of Laos, Pheng Chanthadouangsy (1934-2017) grew up in a place continually shaken by political and military conflict. Soon after the nation was given its independence in 1950, it became embroiled in internal and external wars that inflicted more bombardment than any other country has ever suffered.   Chanthadouangsy began military training at age 20 in preparation for a series of command posts in the Royal Lao Army. In 1965, he was recruited by the CIA to help fight the “Secret War” with North Vietnam, in which he served his longest assignment (1966-1969) on the front lines as Chief of the Special Guerilla Units (SGU) who patroled the Ho Chi Minh Trail.   Colonel Chanthadouangsy was Deputy Director of Military Security in July 1975, and among the last to leave Laos just days before the Communists occupied Vientiane. He escaped with his family across the Mekong River to Thailand.   In November 1975 they were received as refugees in Lima, OH and later joined other Laotians who were settling on Elgin’s southeast side. For the rest of his life Chanthadouangsy was a man of peace, not of war.   With another Royal Lao Officer, he formed the Lao-American Veterans Association of Illinois in 1981, to assist families in need of homes, jobs and community. He became a U.S. citizen in 1982 and took the name Prince Chandetka. He earned a series of degrees starting with an AAS from Elgin Community College in 1978, and would eventually earn a doctorate and retire from Elgin Sweeper as a Senior Designer after thirty years there.   As the eldest and highest ranking Lao-American in the area, his wise counsel was sought by Buddhist temples and advocacy groups, large and small. When he lost his daughter tragically to domestic violence in 1993, Chandetka addressed the entire Elgin community in a public letter, saying “I pray that our people will solve their problems in a peaceful and civilized manner. As our ancestors said, ‘Keep hope alive, when we fight against the hopeless.’”

Spirits of Elgin

Spirits of Elgin recognizes the people who left a mark on this place, but whose faces appear only our photographs and memories until now.

It’s a collective art project intended to decorate the community with subtle reminders of people whose presence here made a difference we can still see and feel.

Submit your nominations and photographs of people who have passed through — and passed away — to be considered for a future edition of Spirits of Elgin.

Caution: defacement of public or private property is a crime under Illinois law and the Elgin municipal code. Penalties are worse when a church, school or memorial is involved. Please do not tag anything that does not belong to you without permission.

Step 1: Carefully cut on the dotted line with a hobby knife or scissors. Remove the paper from the middle.

Step 2: Tape the four corners of the stencil to a safe surface. It works best if the stencil is lying down flat. Spray paint through the opening to transfer the design to the surface underneath.

Mini-Media Guide: FEED 411

How to Get Your Events Listed for FREE in The FEED Publishing and promoting all the things to do in Elgin is why we started BRAVO. We are eager to fill our pages with your events, concerts, festivals, lectures, arts happenings and more.

What We Don’t Want Commercial messages, like “$9.99 Friday Fish Fry” belong in your ad, not in the FEED. Since BRAVO is freely distributed to the general public, private events should not be listed.

Repeating Events Some kinds of events repeat regularly, like bird watching or French conversation groups. If these events are open, they are welcome in the FEED.

Basic Event Submission Visit our online event submission page and fill out the form. Fill in all your event details, along with your own contact info in case there are questions.

Automatic Submission Fortunately, we have a means of collecting events from certain kinds of schedules you post on your website or social media. If your website has a built-in calendar feature, there’s a good

chance that your scheduled event data can be accessed over the internet, in a form that’s conducive to publishing in the FEED. The technology is called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Ask your webmaster about it. Then tell us the URL (web address) of your calendar RSS feed, and we will take it from there.

Facebook Events We can access the events you create in your Facebook account, provided they are open, public events. All we need is your Facebook ID, which is a number consisting of 10-15 digits. You can determine this number by following the tips at findmyfacebookid.com (see link below).

Google Calendar If you have a Google account, you have free access to a suite of useful tools, including a calendar that can be accessed as an RSS feed. Edit your calendar settings and make your calendar public (or share it with us). You can obtain the URL of your calendar’s RSS feed by clicking the “XML” button. Boom! Send us that URL!

Message From The Editor

A Vision for Media in an Arts-friendly Community by Jeffrey Pierce Communication creates community. The exchange of ideas by speakers and listeners, or writers and readers, draws people together around a common task of understanding each other using the shared conventions of language. For community to grow beyond two or three or ten or twenty, the community needs a medium that communicates across larger spans of time and space. For an arts-friendly community to flourish, it needs an arts-friendly medium. This is one vision for such a medium.

sically valuable. As long as the ideas marketplace is not primarily revenue-based, this communication should be free. The medium should support a small business marketplace. Revenue-based organizations — profit-seeking or otherwise — need an affordable channel for reaching customers, patrons and prospects. These organizations should share the cost of the medium among themselves because they

The medium is place-based, because the arts are place-based. Live performances, visual art exhibits, and film screenings exist in a shared physical experience space.

The medium should not become overly commercialized. The presence of paid advertising which is not locally place-based (e.g. national brand advertising) primarily supports the medium and not the community. Commercial messaging disguised as a free flow of information will pollute the ideas marketplace and steal from the small business marketplace. Noisy, cluttered or overexposed advertisements detract from the beauty of the medium. Any and all forms of "selling out" are potentially harmful.

The medium is free, because communication flows best when it is unimpeded. The medium itself exemplifies beauty, freedom of expression, creativity, kindness, technical excellence and diversity because those are the ways in which the arts imitate some of the finest qualities of humanity.

This vision describes a beautiful, free, ad-supported print medium, established in a specific place and serving a community which values artistic expression. Yet there are better and worse ways to realize such a vision. The medium should support a free ideas marketplace. Artists seeking to share their expression with an audience need a platform for introducing their work and announcing their events. In an arts-friendly community, these announcements are considered intrin-

The medium should not become a vehicle for its own artistic expression. Once a publisher begins using the medium itself as an art product, it becomes overtly self-serving and may violate the trust placed in it by the community. The medium should not become a vehicle for its own political expression. By using the medium as a megaphone for any one viewpoint in a controversy weakens the community by alienating part of it, and thus betrays the purpose of the medium.

The medium is physical and direct, because this connects it to specific places where the community gathers. Media such as bulletin boards, posters and handbills are physical and direct because they exist as print.

The medium is sustainable, because the arts-friendly community benefits from the free flow of information, and comes to rely on it. It remains sustainable for as long as it carries content of value, and enables exchange of value among the members of the community: its creators, producers and consumers.

While this vision for a free medium serving an arts-friendly community promotes cooperation and participation, the practical reality is that direct ownership and control of the medium is likely to be concentrated in the hands of a few. They will hold a power over the medium that could easily be misused.

derive the most immediate value from their own commercial messages. The medium should support public communication. Any community has a vested interest in a flow of information from their local, publicly-funded government. Public messaging, especially arts-based, should be welcomed in the medium on a cost-sharing basis whenever that messaging is paid for with budgeted public funds. The medium should offer something to those outside of arts circles. Visibility is essential to all purposes of the medium, and culturally-relevant content of general interest will attract a diverse readership.

Arts-friendly print media are found all over the world in all styles and formats. Some attempt to combine arts-specific content with news, opinion, recurring columns, classified ads and personal ads. The vision articulated here does not preclude any of these kinds of content, but many of them add cost to the medium, and don't effectively contribute to the arts-centric community discourse. Can an arts-friendly community grow and thrive without its own place-based direct physical medium? Probably, but the presence of the medium performs a vital function. It serves as primary evidence that an arts movement exists in the community; it documents the community's values; and it invites others into the community through its free and generous transfer of ideas.

Shuckin’ an’ Singin’ by Mary Ellen Goodwill

Thirteen ears is the farmstand’s baker’s dozen. Stuffed into a brown paper bag they get tossed on the grass by the back stoop. Time for shuckin’. While shuckin’ you could go with Tony: Tony, Tony, bo bony, bo nanna banna, fo foney — Tony! With variation: Tony, Tony, rigatoni, alimony, testimony, yo yo Tony! And there ya go — shuckin’ an’ singin’ on an August day with

Expression: Five Feet Wide, Five Hundred Years Deep

The Sonneteer “You have to write a lot of bad poems first, before you can write a good one.” That was some early advice on perseverance that I received from my most important poetry teacher, the late James Hazard. How many poems do you have to write? Less than 6,446, which was the number of sonnets written by Elgin poet Jennifer S. Gordon as of July 1, 2017. But they started getting good long before she reached that number. “Originally aiming to hit Wordworth’s mark of 500 sonnets, a year-long daily sonnet challenge in late 2011 inspired me to continue thus, if at all possible, unto death,” she told me. “Finally mastering the form several months into that challenge, I found my niche and cannot be happier.” The sonnet is a poetic form dating to thirteenth century Italy, consisting of fourteen lines with a specific pattern of rhymes at the end of each line. Its internal structure is made of two parts: the first eight lines (the octave) introduce and develop an idea, and the last six lines (the sestet) address that idea in some way. The form has been used with a wide variety of subject matter, but always to express a logical sequence of thought or feeling: a question and answer, a problem and solution, or a conflict and its resolution. Miss Gordon — “Jenny” to her friends in the “Poetry Alive” writer’s group that meets monthly at Gail Borden Library — writes often about the form and defends its relevance in her own work.

“To truly read the masters, not just sigh O’er lauded works, to understand and hear Will gain my point. While metaphors oft buy Rich measures, each work does have sense.” “Nonsense!” #MCCCXXXII, ll. 9-12 In many cases, this theme accompanies a response to criticism from other poets or editors who question her preoccupation with the historic form and the period-authentic language she employs. Jenny makes no apologies. “I mentioned that most hate me, and my style Is held in disrespect and cold disdain, Though dunno why I did. My work amain Regarded as but rubbish by the pile Of losers who can’t frame a sonnet while They diss me for my mast’ry...” “A Touch of Honesty for Flavour” #MMMVII, ll. 1-6

“Having set myself to mastering the sonnet in hopes of joining the ranks of our predecessors therein, such as Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Mrs. Browning ... I freely culled antique words to add flavour to my own work,” she said. “Once I’d found my footing and voice (quite literally), I also threw in slang and the occasional cuss word as it suits the moment, offering readers a taste of myself, in a real sense.”

❝ My sonneteering digs to find

a voice for what otherwise is whispering inaudibly.” — Jenny Gordon

The strict metrical structure and rhyming requirements tend to create families of single-syllable rhyming words that recur throughout the poems and create a sort of personal lexicon. Many are used with secondary meanings or in non-literal ways, which becomes clearer after several readings. (See sidebar.)

Poetry criticism — of and by her — is just one of many favorite subjects that appear throughout the collection of eighty sonnets Jenny shared with me. She is also quite fond of dark roast Italian espresso, cycling, dawn and twilight, changing seasons and lyrical descriptions of nature. Each sonnet is assigned a serial number (set in Roman numerals), and is labeled with a date and sequence. She spends 15-20 minutes on each sonnet and writes as many as six per day. Some artists — in any medium, including poetry — agonize for days or weeks over changes and revisions to their work. To paraphrase poet William Stafford, “Poems are never finished, they are simply abandoned.” But Jenny Gordon does not suffer from that compulsion. “Sonnets, as opposed to other poetic forms, are generally best left untampered with in the sense the stanza is more or less perfect in its original form,” she advised. “I learned this the hard way early, attempting to alter sonnets, only to learn I could not; but I could write more than one on the same theme.” Nonetheless she keeps an eraser handy as she works with pencils and loose-leaf paper and spiral-bound notebooks. It is our world, they think us strange, to eye Us from afar, and I guess we don’t care. #MMCDXXXV casionally keystrokes her work into digital form to be submitted for publication on poetry websites or journals. Jenny participates in online poets’ communities and had her work first published in Free Expression magazine. It’s an artistic journey that dates to 1988, when she first started saving original poems, and became a specialty when she began focusing on sonnets in 2010. She proudly attests to being self taught and privately tutored. “In sonneteering especially, I owe a debt of gratitude to three gentlemen,” Messrs. Harrison, Peete, and Hansford.

Jenny is clearly a more than enlightened reader, possibly even a scholar, of the greatest masters and works in this form, and frequently celebrates their legacy in verse. “Thus Shakespeare, Spenser, Daniel wrote, as true In very sense more than fine statues whence But fewer see. Yea further, all we do None save God knows, these answ’ring thence Before Him to our shame and grief, a crew Which hold more than we know, to our expense.” “O Be Careful:” #MMCDXXXVI, ll. 9-14 On the importance of her own writings, she seems to be of two minds, telling me “Sonnets are my niche, poetry something I cherish and daily engage in as possible, but after that I’m uncertain how to render it’s significance.” Yet she writes this. “ We’ve been and done this thing or that, can cite A multitude of mem’ries; what remains To show our efforts, which few ascertains, Are those wee ministers called words. ...Each project time’d undo, Our written records all that’s left t’appear.” “...Only Words?” #MMCDXLI, ll. 1-4,13-14 When I dared to ask Jenny why she writes thousands of sonnets, she told me “While originally it was an exercise to find me a place in poetry period, it shortly became a means of expression where one did not otherwise exist, and finally morphed into an exercise in either creating a work of art, or else inking an artistic diary

page.” She regards her talent as a gift, and its medium an art. And for thematic content, her daily practice offers more than glimpses into her personal life. Family members appear frequently, or accounts of daily chores and errands, and current events like 9/11 or the Grammy Awards anchor some of her reflections in shared experience. The sheer volume of writing she produces means that she often captures snapshots of scenes “like some verbal photographer” and records them as a kind of personal journal.

On a Napkin Ere Sunset Where early evening’s shadows leave but few Gaps for those last rays of warm light, a sense Of fleeting pleasure snags me with th’intense Desire to linger, tasting ere the view Quite melt away. That rosy kiss adieu Yet in the wings, a tender whisper thence Wafts through the trembling Maple leaves, suspense Too precious while but crickets seem to woo. There’s nothing so spectac’lar, hence why be Thus jealous of plain sweets? What’s here to thrill? And no personal journal is complete without a few confessions, fantasies and romantic intimations. A whole series of sonnets ends with appeals to an unnamed love interest. “My sonnet collection more oft than not contains stanzas ending as if written to some man,” she admitted. “While the majority are penned to one or another lover, there is a percentage written as if to some man, yet to none at all, because I found love sonnets more appetizing than otherwise.” Love, both mutual and unrequited, has been a fertile subject for sonnets for centuries and continues to be. “For a year or two at least, I wrote to Mr. Unknown.” Above all, Jenny prizes honesty, and a little modesty. She expects the truth from you, and offers you nothing less. Behind the archaic language, formalism and vivid, lyrical imagination stands a real person of the present. Who else could write this about a bouquet of roses?          — JP “Upon the bush, or as a thought amour Swears on, I kin appreciate roses to Effect, and oh! the fun of posing fer Good taste a vaseful for my mother.
