efore I discovered the thrill of journalism in my early teens, the only other calling that seemed anywhere near as exciting was the life of an airline pilot. Everything about aviation fascinated me then — and still does — and I easily envisioned a career filled with blue skies, far-flung destinations and an endless supply of ginger ale. My journey wound up taking a more grounded, word-based route. But my respect for the friendly skies bloomed into a lifelong love of travel. Needless to say, I was on board when we decided to build this, our first Home & Away issue. We supercharged our always-stunning spring home design and décor content with additional travel coverage. To start, we put writer Eric Barton on a plane to Puerto Rico (p. 77). Because of the deep connections so many of us in South Florida have to the picturesque archipelago, our hearts ached when Hurricane Maria battered Puerto Rico last year. We wanted to see whether San Juan and its neighbors were ready to welcome tourists again, and if our hotel stays and spa treatments and restaurant meals could make a difference in ongoing recovery efforts. (Spoiler: Yes and yes.) We had writer Erin Michelle Newberg set sail with two top Miami chefs on the Regal Princess’ Evan S. Benn latest culinary cruise (p. 59). Cruising — like going to Disney or the Florida Keys — is such an Editor in Chief essential vacation for those of us who live in Miami. We figured it was time for an insider’s guide to the very best of dining at sea. Back on shore before Mother’s Day, we profiled some impressive local moms with unique perspectives on the place we call home. Nadege Green is WLRN’s social justice reporter who manages to show her two sons the best of Miami despite covering some of the city’s most difficult topics (p. 50). Annie Lord is a Miami native who left for Boston and Dallas and is now back to lead Miami Homes for All, where she hopes to end South Florida’s affordable housing problem (p. 56). Taking a closer look at where we live, we go inside the magnificent Coral Gables home of cover stars Gordon and Sasha Stula (p. 102). Originally built in 1923 with an all-coral-rock façade, their expanse in the exclusive Stonegate section of Ponce/Davis is a crescendo of classic architecture and modern interior design with a distinctive sense of place. And because bigger is usually better, writer Christie Galeano-DeMott explored the latest local trend in ultra-luxury condominiums: combining multiple units into giant mansions in the sky (p. 112). My commute to the office takes me right past Miami International Airport on the Dolphin Expressway. Every day when I see those majestic jetliners lift off toward destinations unknown, I think about the glamorous pilot life I dreamed of as a child. But while I once romanticized the allure of leaving, part of what I love about traveling now is the feeling of coming home, to Miami.

he sweet melody of a tropical rain shower on a tin roof is the epitome of home for me. Growing up in Cuba, I was both lulled to sleep and pleasantly awakened by this distinct sound. Indeed, the evocative imagery of rain on a tin roof is captured in song lyrics and countless YouTube videos — who knew? During the frequent summer rains, it’s one of the many reasons our family enjoys the boutique hotels and tropical eateries in the Florida Keys, our favorite Staycation destination (p. 70). The billowy front-porch curtains and welcoming red carpet of Key West’s Saint Hotel deliver on all that is uniquely special about our subtropical escape. From the moment you walk into the eclectic lobby, meander through the lush courtyard pool deck, and relax in a lovely room with bed covers that encourage you to “sleep saintly,” this spot will become your second home. It’s the only place I know where you can walk across the street to take in a first-run film at the Tropic Cinema and be back at the Saint’s stylish Burgundy Bar, drinking one of the Seven Deadly Sins cocktails expertly prepared by bar manager Paul Murphy, all before midnight. I hope we inspire you to take a drive down to the Keys, Lesley DeCanio supporting our neighbors’ efforts to rebuild after Hurricane Irma. With the cool days behind us, we're welcoming back warmer weather, and there’s no better time to enjoy a refreshing margarita, which immediately makes me feel like I’m on vacation, even when sipped in my own backyard. In this issue's Pour (p. 64), we’re sampling premium tequilas and offering recommendations for South Florida’s most intriguing libations — like the Casablanca Margarita, courtesy of Jorge Islas, bar manager at Byblos in South Beach. If you prefer something more exotic, head out to Wynwood's Beaker and Gray for their Lavagave, or to Rácket for El Joven, beautifully garnished with mint and a watermelon popsicle. Next, meet Jose Dans, founder of WOW MKTG and this issue’s My 305 Style influencer (p. 32). He exudes an energy that is both contagious and inspiring. Dans is a curator of all things stunning, from his impeccable wardrobe to his impressive art collection. Time passes quickly in his Coral Gables office, relaxing in luscious chairs and admiring exquisite pieces from Jonathan Adler’s Muse collection. These matte-white collectibles are set off by rich dark walls and cabinets, and before you've had an opportunity to peruse them all, you’re ushered into yet another breathtaking space. His office, wow! For many of us, our spaces are important to our well-being. I loved learning how the couples profiled in our Home Away From Home feature (p. 118) describe their second homes as their “little sanctuaries” in France, Martha’s Vineyard, Aspen and Birmingham, Michigan. They all seem to cherish how these homes bring family, friends and neighbors together, nurturing a sense of peace, balance and fulfillment. Whether it’s a charming boutique hotel (with a tin roof, of course!), a local tequila bar, a second home of your own or a friend who has invited you to stay the summer, we hope the stories we’ve gathered here will resonate in your own life. And finally, as we savor the beauty of the season, my wish for you is the same contentment I feel as a warm, soothing Miami rain dances on my home’s tin roof. Happy spring!

DANCING QUEEN
Fit for a Castle Decorum dictates that no lackluster La-Z-Boy will do while binge-watching the royal wedding on May 19. Imagine yourself at the St. George’s Chapel altar while surrounded by memorabilia from the royal family itself. Stock up on such noble items at HRH-Her Royal Household, the Surfside boutique that channels Buckingham Palace. British expat Bera Kalhan dreamed up the idea after collecting royal items for two decades. As for the wedding, Kalhan said she’s “delighted that Lady Di’s two boys have found such happiness.” Find your own joy with Art Deco silverware sets, cut-glass decanters and ornate chinaware, perfect for a spot of wedding tea. 9513 Harding Avenue, Surfside; 786-474-8706; herroyalhousehold.com.

Now it has an arts-themed hotel, too: Downtown’s Art Ovation Hotel opened in March. An artist-in-residence program connects guests with artists through live studio sessions, private dinners and more. The hotel’s first exhibit, opening April 12, is “Legacy: An Exhibition by Ringling College of Art and Design Faculty and Alumni,” presenting alumni of one of the country’s finest art schools. The hotel’s on-staff art curator, former Miamian Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig, and culture curator Lisa DiFranza will be sure your getaway is full of creative discoveries. The $10,000 See and Be Scene package includes a weekend stay, cabana rental, sailboat, limo to the opera, and hair and makeup before your very own photo shoot. 1255 North Palm Avenue, Sarasota; 941-316-0808; artovationhotel.com.

the local LAUNCHING NOW By Eric Barton Stores in the Miami Design District are as sleek and stylish as modern art galleries. Clockwise from far left: Be wowed when you enter Christian Louboutin, Tod’s and Jaeger-LeCoultre, all within steps of each other.
Some of the Miami Design District’s newest boutiques display fashion like works of art. Stores with things to purchase, yes, but these also could pass as art galleries: Far from just a shoe store, the new Christian Louboutin Flagship Store is an adventure into plush raspberry-red carpet and ocean-blue teardrop chandeliers and round banquettes as colorful as a carnival fun house. 155 Northeast 40th Street; 305-548-8246; us.christianlouboutin.com. At the new Tod’s, moveable walls slide along polished concrete floors, converting the 2,400-square-foot
showroom into an event space, with a 60-foot projection screen between displays of Italian leather goods. 143 Northeast 39th Street; 305-576-8132; tods.com. After scoring a pair of Tod’s famed Gommino moccasins, walk them across the street to Boutique Jaeger-LeCoultre. The storied Argentine polo boot maker sells timepieces as heirlooms, hosting parties where the watch-obsessed sip Hennessey as their new purchases are displayed by white-gloved employees. 140 Northeast 39th Street; 305-908-3660; jaeger-lecoultre.com.

The Dance
National Water Dance
At 4 p.m. April 14, dancers will begin the same choreographed moves in venues from Miami to Seattle as part of the National Water Dance. Like the city itself, Miami’s contribution will be influenced by Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and contemporary fusion when more than 70 professional and student dancers take to the Biscayne Nature Center. The free event is choreographed in Miami by National Water Dance founder and director Dale Andree, with music composed by Miami percussionist Brandon Cruz. Between the choreographed start and finale, there’s no telling where the dance will go, but you’ll know a similar same scene is playing out across the country. 6747 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne; nationalwaterdance.org.

THE POETRY
Miami native Zack Bush scratched off one of his life goals when he opened the acclaimed jazz club Ball & Chain on Calle Ocho. Now he’s crossed off another: publishing a children’s book. Made for Me is a sweet romp about a burly dad smitten with the tiny baby in his arms, just like Bush became after his two kids. “Three years ago, when my oldest was born, I was just overcome with emotion, and I had to get it out somehow,” he said. “This is based on raw emotion and love. The book really just wrote itself from what I was feeling.” Illustrated by Florence artist Gregorio De Lauretis, it’s in stores now. facebook.com/MadeForMeBook.

the local BEAUTY By Jennifer Scruby
My
BEAUTY
BLACK BOOK
If anyone understands the importance of a good foundation, it’s Alison Antrobus and Ruby Ramirez. The geniuses behind the design firm Antrobus + Ramirez, they met working for Philippe Starck and now create some of Miami’s most compelling spaces: Ocean House, Prime 112 and, most recently, Palazzo Del Sol (see p. 112 for more). Architectural principles help guide these busy women’s beauty routines, too. “First, we need a smooth surface to work on: the foundation, the primer,” Ramirez said. “And the brows have to be perfect, because they frame the face.” From there, it’s all about a balance of finishing touches. “We’ll always experiment with lipstick and eye makeup, but never with the foundation or brows,” Antrobus said. “The structure remains the same; the décor can change!” Here, the two take us through their beauty MVPs.
MEMORABLE MOMENT
PERFECT BACKDROP GIORGIO ARMANI MAESTRO UV SKIN DEFENSE PRIMER & FUSION MAKEUP Ramirez: “Alison and I both wear these. They have great SPF and are like putting on a silk negligee: You don’t even feel them.” giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com.
ARCH SUPPORT
NARS VELVET LIP GLIDE IN DEVIANT Ramirez: “In our design, we usually have one big moment that transforms a space. Similarly, at night, I’ll do this rich lip color.” narscosmetics.com.
EYEBROW LEGEND
MAC FLUIDLINE BROW GELCRÈME Antrobus: “I bought this after Ruby made me two drawings: ‘This is you with eyebrows and without.’” maccosmetics.com.
LETICIA COLLAZO AT RIK RAK SALON Ramirez: “I’ve had other people do my brows, but they just clean. She’s like an architect.” rikrak.com.
NOIR CLASSIC
CUSTOM BLENDS
LE LABO SANTAL 33 Antrobus: “Each bottle is blended for you on site in Wynwood. I’ve never received so many compliments on a fragrance.” lelabofragrances.com.
Like many entrepreneurs, Valerie Massoni set out to create something she felt was missing — a wellness center for expectant and new mothers. The idea, hatched while she was finishing Harvard Business School and newly pregnant, was simple: help women care for their bodies and babies and have a great start as moms. The result? Body Belly Baby, a brilliant sisterhood offering everything from Pilates (a discipline that uniquely address the musculoskeletal changes that come with pregnancy) to lactation consulting to baby massage. “Moms come from all over, and the most rewarding thing is seeing them excited and texting me as they’re giving birth,” Massoni said. “One says she wants to have another baby just to come back!” 2550 South Bayshore Drive, Suite 206A, Coconut Grove; 305-215-2970; bodybellybaby.com.
Surgical Smarts Dr. Tal Roudner, a board-certified Coral Gables plastic surgeon, doesn’t mince words when describing South Florida’s plastic-surgery landscape: “It’s the Wild West. We’re suffering from clinics that aren’t run by doctors. Patients meet the doctor for five minutes or even on the day of surgery.” How to play it safe? Roudner, who is world-renowned for his natural-looking nips and tucks, says to choose a doctor who’s certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Next: Make sure the doctor is caring and available to answer questions post-surgery. Ask to see photographs or patient reviews. And beware trendy procedures. Roudner steers away from performing supersize butt implants. “As with breast implants, going really big can cause issues down the road,” he said. “In 10 years, is this butt going to be down to your knees?” 550 Biltmore Way, Suite 890, Coral Gables; 305-767-7719; talroudnerplasticsurgery.com.
STEALTH MEDIA MARKETING (COLLAZO)
OPI BLACK ONYX NAIL LACQUER Antrobus: “When presenting palettes to a client, we don’t want to wear distracting nail polish. It’s more about taupe or this high-drama neutral.” opi.com.

THE DESIGN
“Our WOW MKTG office is set up like a really high-end, concierge-level hotel in New York. It’s dark — the walls are black, there’s a lot of rich-looking furniture, and it serves as an art gallery for us.” 804 South Douglas Road, Coral Gables; 305-273-8373; wowmktg.com.
THE FURNITURE
JOSE DANS The founder and president of WOW MKTG sees inspiration all around him, with his Coral Gables office doubling as a workplace and design studio. THE GALA
“On April 21 my wife and I will be chairing the American Cancer Society Miami Gala. Five years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and thankfully she’s 100 percent well, but we’ve dedicated a lot of time and resources to this organization.” acsfdmia.ejoinme.org/acsmiamigala.
THE SCENT
“I’ve been wearing Clive Christian X for years. It’s a very distinct, unique scent that not many people wear.” Neiman Marcus at the Shops at Merrick Park, 390 San Lorenzo Avenue, Coral Gables; 786-999-1000; neimanmarcus.com.
THE DETAILS
“Custom buttons and cufflinks add an elevated level of detail to any outfit. Bergdorf Goodman has the coolest selection that I’ve seen. I don’t mind wearing cufflinks that have diamonds or mother of pearl or black diamonds, like these from Jan Leslie.” bergdorfgoodman.com.
THE CANDLE
“We pump a scent into the air conditioning at the office. Nest has amazing scents. They have a holiday one that only comes out once a year, and I buy a ton and use it all year long.” Nordstrom at Dadeland Mall, 7239 North Kendall Drive, Miami; 786-709-4100; nordstrom.com.
THE SHOPPING
“Some of the most beautiful stores in town are in the Design District, the same caliber as Fifth Avenue. Tony at Christian Dior is probably the best salesperson I’ve ever met at a boutique.” 162 Northeast 39th Street, Miami; 305-576-4632; dior.com.
THE ART
“I collect Cuban art. Flora la Recogedora de Sueños by Cundo Bermúdez at the Pérez Art Museum serves as the receiver of people’s dreams. Cundo allowed smaller copies to be made, and we have one of them. It’s solid bronze, 800 pounds — it was a challenge to get it here!” Flora by Cundo Bermúdez.

N
o travel wardrobe or home décor is complete without at least a few high-end vintage pieces. Miami is home to several select spots that are the go-to for celebrities, stylists, decorators and locals in the know. Here are six of our favorite shops for designer travel accessories and vintage home pieces that are just as on-trend now as they were back in the day. FLY BOUTIQUE Owners Jean Marie and Max De Bernardi have been married for 10 years and have collected a vast inventory of vintage and consignment home décor and travel pieces mixed in with new designer threads and accessories. Petite room vignettes welcome visitors into a classic era with original and replica pieces from notable furniture designers, including Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames, and George Nelson. One of their oldest pieces, a 100-year-old Persian rug, elegantly rests under a 1950s Scandinavian teak wood chair. An iconic Jacobsen egg chair is accented by a 1960s dome floor lamp while Haeger bric-à-brac adorns a beautiful Noguchi coffee table. But the boutique doesn’t just carry items from the past. It has an extensive collection of present-day designer fashions from Bottega Veneta to Yves Saint Laurent. This is the place to pick up that perfect travel outfit and a vintage Gucci duffle bag to carry it onboard. 7235 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami; 305-604-8508; flyboutiquevintage.com.

At Fly Boutique on Biscayne Boulevard, vintage designer furniture, travel pieces and clothing come together in petite room vignettes. It’s the kind of place to find a vacation outfit and a Gucci suitcase to put it in.

THE HOUSE OF FINDINGS Owner Mayra Gonzalez roamed the world for three years in search of vintage pieces, selling them at pop-up markets around town. Now she has her own shop, located in Upper Buena Vista, a new mix of retail, wellness and hospitality concepts. A savvy traveler, Gonzalez curates House of Findings with her voyages in mind. She has a hefty collection of vintage suitcases from the likes of Dior and Samsonite, and key travel accessories like straw and fur hats. She also carries beautiful Italian and French sunglasses from the ’50s and ’60s. If you really want to travel through the decades, browse Gonzalez’s handbags, spanning from Victorian to the ’90s. 5030 Northeast Second Avenue, Miami; 786-558-4038; thehouseoffindings.com. CONSIGN OF THE TIMES Don’t call it a vintage store. Consign of the Times is a contemporary consignment haven with two locations, in Miami Beach and South Miami. After retiring from the restaurant business, owner Carin Kirby opened her first store in 2002 and is picky about her inventory. While the most sought-after items at Consign are its Chanel purses, it also carries a stellar selection of designer luggage, including limited-edition pieces like the Louis Vuitton Supreme duffle. The shop’s collection of crossbody bags are highly coveted. Travel accessories like Tom Ford and Prada sunglasses as well as Gucci, Dior and Hermès hats also abound here. 1935 West Avenue, Miami Beach; 305-535-0811; and 6931 Red Road, South Miami; 305-667-6675; consignofthetimes.com.
Max De Bernardi, top, owns Fly Boutique with wife Jean Marie. Together they have collected a vast inventory of vintage and new pieces from their travels.
STYLE SAVES It started off in 2011 as a nonprofit with a mission of uniting fashion with philanthropy to help underprivileged students with necessary items like school supplies, uniforms and clothing. This year, Style Saves moved to the heart of Wynwood and added a discount designer store, where all proceeds support students in need. Travel accessories are big here. The shop carries a strong selection of sunglasses, including Prada and Chanel shades. It also has trendy straw hats, perfect for an island getaway. For bibliophiles looking for a fun plane read, pick up one of the shop’s fashion-icon books. 2900 Northwest First Avenue, Miami; 305-721-2744; stylesaves.org. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND When it opened the doors of its Miami satellite shop, What Goes Around Comes Around brought with it true New York style and global vintage fashion. Featuring exquisite pieces from Chanel, Gucci, Missoni and Hermès, the 1,300-square-foot space is a must-visit for discerning travelers and decorators. The shop carries rarities like a Tiffany & Co. Etoile six-piece dinner set with gold on the rims. The luggage selection is on point: Classics like a monogrammed Louis Vuitton duffle soar. Since opening its New York flagship in 1993, WGACA has made a name for itself as an expert in vintage pieces from the world’s most coveted fashion houses. 1800 Bay Road, Miami Beach; 305-271-6200; whatgoesaroundnyc.com. C. MADELEINE’S After 17 years on Biscayne Boulevard, C. Madeleine’s has relocated south, to Midtown. Walking into the store is like taking a step back in time to every amazing fashion moment from the past 100 years. Browse more than 1,000 hats — from Kentucky Derby to Panama-style — for your next trip, or pick up a “new” piece of swimwear from the ’40s, ’50s or ’60s. Some even come with matching Louis Vuitton suitcases and trunks. For home décor, lose yourself in C. Madeleine’s vintage fainting couches, chandeliers from the ’20s, regal Asian screens, mid-century accent pieces and even a few modern furnishings from Knoll. 305-945-7770; cmadeleines.com. VITALS 29. CEO of The Elmir Group. Elmir, a Miami native and Miami Dade College graduate, was born to a Cuban mother and Lebanese father. Rising through the ranks of South Florida’s real estate elite through trusted relationships and expert knowledge, Elmir has been recognized as a top producer for Cervera Real Estate. She has led her group in sales of more than $350 million. REAL ESTATE CHOSE HER “Growing up in an era when Miami's real estate business was exploding, I was able to see the city grow before my eyes. I was inspired to see my career path directly impact the community I love as well as being able to have a personal connection with clients.” MENTORS MATTER “The Elmir Group operates under Cervera Real Estate, a family-owned company built around three generations of Cervera women. One of them is Veronica Cervera Goeseke. She has been the perfect mentor for me. She began her career in real estate in 1980 and has worked in every aspect of the business. The wealth of knowledge she has passed on to me is something I hope to pass on to future realtors.” LANGUAGE ADVANTAGE “Knowing more than one language will give you a leg up in any field you work in. I know English, Arabic and Spanish. That has allowed me to broaden my reach and establish professional relationships with a larger demographic.” HOME IN THE GROVE “I consider Coconut Grove my home because that is where I grew up. Coconut Grove offers everything you want in a neighborhood: parks, markets, marinas, lush landscape, a rich history.” DO THE WORK “I prepare myself for a big sale by becoming knowledgeable in the area and in the potential buyer. Buyers want to work with someone who they trust to make sure they are making the best decision possible. I familiarize myself with every aspect of an area to guide the buyer in making an informed decision.” GOING THE EXTRA MILE “I personally go to see all the properties that compare to the ones we are negotiating to discover all the details. Anyone can look at the specifications of a property online, but you never truly understand the listing, let alone competitive listings, unless you visit the property yourself. I like to take this care when setting prices in order to be able to support my reasoning in negotiations.” LEAVING A LEGACY “I want to be known as a trustworthy and personable agent. My goal is to treat each client with the same amount of care and respect. This industry is all about relationships, and I want to leave a legacy of putting people first.” BREATHE AND MOVE ON “The trick to dealing with failure is looking at it as a learning experience. There’s a lesson to take out of every situation. If a sale falls through, I take a breath and move on. Charmaine & Gilad Lang For each plush bathrobe they sell, this mother-son duo provides a family in the Dominican Republic or Haiti with clean drinking water.
W
hen Charmaine Lang came to the United States, she faced a dilemma familiar to many immigrants: What to do for work? In South Africa, Lang was a business woman, manufacturing belts. But she found it difficult to get a job here, picking up a gig as a restaurant server. Lucky for Lang, her entrepreneurial wheels never stopped turning. Lang saw that restaurants used expensive point-of-sale terminals and realized it was more lucrative to sell those than to sling meals. She quit her waitressing job to become a traveling saleswoman. One night on the road, missing home and her son Gilad, she settled down in her hotel and wrapped herself in a towel: a scratchy, thin, poor-quality hotel towel. The entrepreneurial wheels turned again, and The Madison Collection was born. Today, Lang’s Miami-based luxury linen business is nearly 20 years old, serving wholesale and retail customers worldwide. FEEL GOOD, DO GOOD Since Day One, The Madison Collection’s mission has been to promote sustainable

environmental and labor practices. Its products are manufactured in Brazil using eco-friendly processes. Water is heated using waste fiber briquettes, and looms use a flour-and-water paste as opposed to industrial glue. And now, The Madison Collection is poised to be the next big buy-one, give-one company. Its new Feel Good, Do Good initiative is aimed at one of the most integral parts of hospitality and linen manufacturing: water. The Feel Good, Do Good campaign, started in October in partnership with Wine to Water, works like this: For every high-end bathrobe The Madison Collection sells online, the company gives a ceramic water filter to a family in the Dominican Republic or Haiti. The filters provide a household with clean water for up to 10 years. So far, more than 518 people have benefited from the program. Remember that son who Lang was missing when she was on the road? Gilad Lang joined the family business a year ago as vice president of business development. He came on board after working on social impact initiatives for Carnival Corp., the Peace Corps and the Safety Lab, an innovation hub in South Africa.
WARBY PARKER OF BATHROBES “I looked at our industry and what harms it was causing,” Gilad said. “One of the biggest things was the amount of water that is used. I thought, ‘How can we have a positive impact?’” Gilad connected with Wine to Water during his work on Fathom, Carnival’s socially conscious cruise line. When he joined his mom’s business, the opportunity to give back to those in need in the Caribbean was impossible to ignore. “We’ve dedicated our entire bathrobe category online to this initiative,” he said. “This is part of our business model going forward. We want to be the Warby Parker or Toms of bathrobes. When you put on your bathrobe, you have directly and personally given one family safe drinking water.” In the Lang family, the entrepreneurial drive — and community spirit — clearly has passed from one generation to another. “I’m from the baby boomer generation, and Gilad is just on the cusp of being a millennial,” Charmaine said. “I’ve given him full reign to do it his way and find his own path.” WORDS BY NINA LINCOFF / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Nadege Green WLRN’s social justice reporter covers our backyard — her hometown — in search of raw truth and tender moments.
N
adege Green carries her gear with her everywhere. As a reporter for WLRN, the local NPR affiliate, she never knows when news will happen. Sometimes, it’s not only gear she’s toting — it’s one of her sons. After Hurricane Irma swept through Miami, Green left her house with a microphone in one hand and her younger son around her neck. “My kids are part of who I am,” she said. “I’ll take them with me [to assignments]. It reminds people you’re human.” Humanity is a focal point of most of her storytelling. Green — a Miami native — often reports on difficult topics that even journalists have a hard time covering: social justice, gun violence and inequality. The work she does is necessary, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. “Emotionally it can take a toll,” she said. “It’s a hard place to report from. Reporters who cover any kind of trauma, it's more real because you're there. You're in these spaces.”

‘There is no cookie-cutter prescription for motherhood.’ ENDING THE VIOLENCE Positive feedback isn’t common in journalism. Reporters hear from people when they are upset with a story, but not necessarily when they’re happy about one. But Green knows the work she does is worth the effort. She once came across a group of kids in Liberty City protesting the right to play outside safely. She was in the neighborhood for something else, but immediately gravitated to the 3rd and 4th graders. They said they were tired of the violence, chanting, “We don’t

want to die. Stop the shootings.” Green’s piece aired, but it wasn’t the end of the story. A few months later, she visited the teacher of a few of the young protestors. The teacher said the story was shared with another teacher in New York, whose students could relate to neighborhood gun violence. So they started a pen pal program between the two classrooms. “Sometimes, we like to think the work we do will impact the community, but sometimes it doesn’t,” Green said. “They knew
they were not alone. I’m happy I got to find out that happened.” SUPERMOM WITH STYLE Her sons, ages 4 and 6, are aware of who she is and what she does. Her youngest calls her supermom. Her oldest asked for her business card because he was proud of her. Motherhood, she said, is all about doing our best to not mess up. “We don't tell moms enough that your version of motherhood is valid,” she said. “We don't talk about the different ways motherhood exists. There is no cookie-cutter
prescription for motherhood.” Her style is just as fluid as her parenting. When she’s at work, she’s in Converse sneakers and jeans — practical for hauling around her sound equipment. When she’s home, she goes more eclectic, with prints and colors. Credit for her fashion sense goes to her Haitian upbringing or her Miami roots — or maybe both. “I love Miami — 305 till I die,” she said. “It’s my hometown. very year on Mother’s Day, Daniel de la Vega sends his mother, Mayi, a large bouquet of flowers, and the two try to squeeze in lunch. But as the dynamic force behind One Sotheby’s International Realty, this mother-son pair doesn’t lack for time together during the workday. For starters, they kick off every week in the office with a strategy session. “I’ve learned to make a long task list instead of picking up the phone to call him every time I get an idea in my head!” Mayi said with a laugh. Another ground rule: “Out of respect for people around us, we’ve made a huge effort to not talk business when we are doing family things,” she said. “But if we’re driving to a Heat game and something comes up, we’ll talk about it.”
NOT LOOKING BACK Mayi, who founded the firm amid the recession and real estate downturn in 2008, is the visionary with a laser focus on strategic positioning. Her son, meantime, handles everyday operations under his purview as president. The South Florida brokerage now boasts more than 800 agents in 14 offices. “We’ve never looked back!” Daniel said. From One Sotheby’s earliest days, Mayi told her son that he had to work his way up from the bottom. “I said, ‘You’ve got to do all the things everybody doesn’t want to do, get your hands dirty and earn everyone’s respect.’” In addition to working with Daniel, Mayi also has a daughter, Alina, who is a real estate agent. “It’s very rewarding to have my children involved in my business,” Mayi said. “They are the sunshine of my life.” (At Daniel’s wedding, he and his mom danced to Stevie Wonder’s You Are the Sunshine of My Life.) “We have a great relationship,” Daniel chimed in. “I’ve learned a lot from her. For the most part, she gives me the autonomy to do whatever I feel is right for the organization.”

CITY WITH A SOUL From a brokerage standpoint, he said, the industry is moving toward an agent-centered model, and he’s focused on growing the firm’s mortgage, title and commercial ancillary businesses, as well as concentrating on their Stuart and Palm Beach offices that opened late last year. “What I love about what I do is that no two days are the same.” Mother and son share a passion for art and design (perfect for a Sotheby’s brokerage). Daniel started building his collection 10 years ago with emerging Latin American artists and has since transitioned to mid-career national artists. “Design is my frustrated passion!” Daniel said. “We just opened our headquarters in the Design District, and every time I drive through it, it’s completely mind-boggling how far that neighborhood has come and the stores they’ve opened.” They also both relish their homes in Miami Beach. Daniel, whose house was designed by Briggs Edward Solomon, appreciates how the open design is tailor-made for entertaining. Mayi enjoys relaxing on her balcony and taking in the city’s skyline, water views and colorful sunsets. “It reminds me every day of how much our city has evolved and thrived and how beautiful it is,” she said. “It’s a global city. A city with soul. A happy city.” WORDS BY LAUREN COMANDER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Annie Lord
‘LET’S NOT WAIT’ Miami Homes for All works to promote legislation that creates and preserves affordable housing, to procure investments in a community land and housing trusts, and to help homeless youth. Lord said she’s acutely aware that the affordable housing crisis “is affecting people up and down the income spectrum,” from the 8,000 kids in Miami public schools whose families don’t have homes to people who work but are barely able to afford rent. “We have to have a place for people to live, like firefighters and teachers, or we won’t have them here,” Lord said. “Let’s not wait until we become like Los Angeles or San Francisco, where almost no one can afford to live within the city limits.” Miami topped Forbes’ list of the worst cities for renters last year. About 20 percent of the Magic City’s 2.7 million residents are living in poverty, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The new executive director of Miami Homes for All returned home to help find solutions to the affordable housing problem.
A
s a child, Annie Lord saw the effects of income disparity on a daily basis during her commute from Coconut Grove Elementary School. “I remember driving through the West Grove to get home. I was aware at a really early age of the stark contrast between the house I lived in and the apartments that my classmates lived in,” said Lord, 38, the new executive director of Miami Homes for All, formerly called the

Miami Coalition for the Homeless. “It breaks my heart. I drive through the West Grove every day and it looks unchanged,” she said. “I’ve always imagined that I could have had a different life. If I had been born in a different neighborhood or to different parents — that would be my struggle.” Lord, the daughter of a Cuban exile, was born and raised in Miami. She attended Ransom Everglades School and went on to Harvard, where she earned
a bachelor’s degree in Latin American studies and a master’s in public policy. She served as the director of the South Florida Community Development Coalition before moving to Dallas five years ago, where she led programs that helped people in poverty. Lord moved back to Miami in December, officially coming on board at Miami Homes for All a month later. She succeeded Barbara “Bobbie” Ibarra, who retired.
ENSURE INCLUSIVITY “No one can be financially safe if they can’t live in a home they can afford,” Lord said. A lack of affordable housing causes a trickle-down effect, she said, that leaves people struggling to pay for health insurance, child care, education, food and so on. “I think about single moms all of the time,” Lord said, herself the mother of two boys, ages 2 and 3. “The only reason I’m able to maintain balance is because I have a lot of help. “The question is, how can we balance the desire to be a city where people want to stay and build businesses and homes and raise families, and be a place that takes care of its workforce? You’ve got to create the groundwork for investment and ensure that your community is inclusive.” WORDS BY CAITLIN GRANFIELD / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

An eater’s guide to making every calorie count while sailing the high seas.

hen you live in a sun-drenched city where others vacation, one of the easiest ways to take your own family trip or romantic getaway is on a cruise. A number of ships based out of Miami and Fort Lauderdale have upped their culinary offerings in recent years, partnering with big-name chefs and providing guests 24-hour access to fresh food. We recently set sail on Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess for its third annual Culinary Cruise with acclaimed Miami chefs Brad Kilgore (Alter) and Scott Linquist (Les Banh Amis, Coyo Taco). And we compiled these tips to help you conquer your next eating vacation at sea. 1. BE WISE AT THE BUFFET You’ll never go hungry onboard a cruise ship. On the Regal Princess, the massive Horizon Court buffet has literally hundreds of dishes available for breakfast, lunch, dinner and mid-meal snacks. The name of the game here is customization. Whether it’s choosing your fillings at the omelet station or deciding among 20-some salad dressings, go with what you love, or mix it up and try something different each time. Obviously there are desserts for days. This buffet always featured rows of fresh fruits, pastries and chocolate creations by Fort Myersbased celebrity chocolatier Norman Love. Even the gluten-free and vegetarians/vegans among us have a broad range of options onboard. Anything else you need? Just ask and executive chef Florin Dragan has you covered.

the life Miami chefs Scott Linquist and Brad Kilgore lead a cooking demonstration on Princess Cruises’ Culinary Cruise, below. Other food highlights onboard the Regal Princess include dishes like filet mignon and onion soup at Crown Grill chophouse and pasta at Sabatini’s Italian restaurant, bottom.
2. BOOK THE SPECIALTY RESTAURANTS Don’t miss the specialty dining rooms, which usually require reservations and are always best to book in advance. On the Regal Princess, we felt like royalty at the Italian-themed Sabatini’s, the Crown Grill chophouse and the Crab Shack fish restaurant. Food was second-to-none, including the heavenly mushroom pasta prepared tableside at Sabatini’s and the onion soup at Crown Grill that’s spiked with Jack Daniels and topped with a roquefort cheese crust. But perhaps even more impressive was the international wine selection at each restaurant. A major plus was a beyondknowledgable sommelier, who helped us choose Super Tuscans (we went with a 2013 Luce della Vite) and sweet dessert wines (Late-Harvest Sauvignon Blanc from Errazuriz in Chile’s Casablanca Valley). Between the service and the glassware and the decanters, it all had a very Michelin vibe. 3. FIND THE SPA MENU We discovered an oasis in The Sanctuary, an adults-only area where you can rent a cabana or lounge chair and be pampered while enjoying bites from a spa-inspired menu. We suggest the sautéed edamame and the grilled shrimp, which comes on a bed of Italianstyle white beans. Go ahead and order a cocktail — you deserve it for being so good.

An extra-spicy Bloody Mary with Tito’s vodka hits the spot, as does a refreshing Aperol Spritz. Speaking of spritz, crew members come around periodically to cool you down with hicha fine mist of Evian. 4. FOLLOW THE PROS On our culinary-driven voyage, Princess provided guests with a series of interactive experiences on the ship and off. It felt like being in the studio of a Food Network show when chefs Kilgore and Linquist gave cooking demonstrations on stage in the main theater. The audience went crazy for Kilgore’s Seared Diver Scallops from his Alter restaurant in Wynwood — which the kitchen at Crown Grill prepared for its diners that evening. (Get the recipe at miamiindulge.com.) Linquist and a local guide led a group of us on a taco tour of Cozumel. We were able to devour not only Cozumel’s best tacos but also a lesson in local history and culture. Each of the restaurants we visited was completely unique and interesting, but the best-taco award goes to El Palomar. The pork chicharron taco, with a fresh blue-corn tortilla and homemade salsas, was perfectly seasoned, each bite better than the last. Ready to set sail? Don’t forget to pack some extra-loose garb — and bon voyage! WORDS BY ERIN MICHELLE NEWBERG

Feast on Fish Ghee Indian Kitchen’s Pushkar Marathe prepares an eye-catching snapper that’s impossible to mess up.
Chef Pushkar Marathe coats snapper in a coconut-herb paste, then steams it in toasted banana leaves. It’s a can’t-fail technique that Marathe says “is always perfect.” Opposite page: Snapper and side dishes at Ghee Indian Kitchen.

D
uring school recess in India, Pushkar Marathe would press his face against the window of the cafeteria kitchen to watch the cooks make lunch. Later, he’d recite to his mom all that he saw. “I would say, ‘Mom, they did it this way and that way.’ And she would say, ‘Pushkar, that’s a different way of cooking,’” Marathe, 33, recalled. Marathe’s father served in the Indian air force, so every few years his family moved to a new part of the country. They say every 200 miles in India an entirely new culture begins, so Marathe saw many of them through those school kitchen windows. “It helped me in the long run because it exposed me to different dishes and new techniques,” he said. And that is good news for Miami. Marathe is head chef at Ghee Indian Kitchen’s newest location, in the Design District. He has taken that range of Indian cooking styles he learned as a kid and merged it with very modern, very tasty preparations at Ghee.
FRIENDS WITH A DREAM That idea got its start back when Marathe was a line cook at 3030 Ocean in Fort Lauderdale, working for innovative chef Dean James Max. Chopping herbs and breaking down proteins with Marathe back then was fellow young cook Niven Patel. “People used to make fun of us, saying, ‘You two are going to open up a curry house one day,’” Marathe laughed. “But we were dreaming of something bigger. We imagined what we could do if we combined Dean Max’s style of farm-to-table cooking with Indian cuisine.” Max later promoted Patel to be head chef of his restaurant in Grand

Cayman, and Patel brought Marathe with him. They continued to talk about their dream of a locally sourced Indian restaurant in Miami. Patel made it a reality last May when he opened Ghee’s first location, in Downtown Dadeland. Much of the restaurant’s produce is grown on Patel’s own farm in south Miami-Dade, and most everything else is locally sourced. BRIGHT AND RICH When Patel — a semifinalist for Best Chef: South in this year’s James Beard Awards — planned to open Ghee’s second location last fall, he called up his old friend. Marathe, who had been cooking in Palm Beach, jumped at the chance. “I said, ‘Yes, of course, let’s get started.’” He and Patel are already dreaming of what’s next, which might soon include a restaurant in Palm Beach County. Ghee’s cooking style is based on fresh ingredients that don’t need much coaxing. That’s exemplified in the dish Marathe chose here: flaky fish made brighter and richer with a coconut chutney. At the restaurant, it’s served whole and deboned, but you can buy filets to keep things simple. Marathe recommends snapper, because it’s easy to find locally, but he says any light white fish will do. “This is the perfect dish for entertaining,” Marathe said. “Even if your guests arrive and you get distracted and let it cook five minutes extra, it will still be great. The coconut chutney will work as a baste to make it that much richer. No matter what you do, this is a dish that’s always perfect.” Ghee Indian Kitchen at Miami Design District, 3620 Northeast Second Avenue, Miami; 786-636-6122; gheemiami.com.

Around the turn of the 20th Century, black people coming to Miami to work on Henry Flagler’s railroad were relegated to live in “Colored Town.” They faced discrimination and the wrath of Jim Crow, yet Overtown grew into a vibrant community -- the Harlem of the South. When Miami’s growth encroached on Overtown, it lost many of the places that made it shine. Like Clyde Killen’s Pool Hall, where some of the country’s top black artists performed late at night after they played shows in Miami Beach. Clyde Killen’s is being reborn into a restaurant from star chef Marcus Samuelsson. David Beckham plans to put his Major League Soccer stadium in Overtown. And talented Miami couple Jamila Ross and Akino West are about to open their Copper Door Bed & Breakfast. Overtown is enjoying a return to its glory days. Meet our guide
Jackie Bell has lived in Overtown most of her life and remembers watching the likes of Nat King Cole perform in the town’s Little Broadway. “It was a very fun place to grow up,” she said, back when Overtown was an “economically sound community.” That all changed when the highways were erected, cutting through the neighborhood. The city promised Overtown that everything would return to normal after redevelopment. But businesses and theaters closed — the Historic Lyric Theater is the lone remnant of those days — yet Bell did not give up on her home. The president of the New Washington Heights Community Development Corporation, Bell is an active community organizer. In the 1960s, she teamed with state Rep. Gwen Cherry, the first black woman elected to the Florida Legislature, to give the city a voice in rebuilding efforts. Over the years, Bell has grown into a de facto mayor of Overtown, speaking up for the city and fighting inequality. “It’s wonderful to see the rebirth of this community,” she said.

Three restored Victorian mansions have been converted into Marquesa 4-1-4, a new, 17-room guesthouse on Simonton Street that’s situated near its sister hotel, Marquesa.
Imagine a private, semitropical island just minutes from all the amenities of one of the world’s most exclusive private-club communities, yet far removed from the hectic pace of everyday life. Where there is a boat in the backyard and the Florida Keys sunsets astound.
Welcome to
Pumpkin Key. Key

surrounding a courtyard swimming pool. It’s an extension of the beloved Marquesa hotel just up the block. Positioned in the heart of what author Judy Blume calls Key West’s “cultural corridor,” a stay at Marquesa 4-1-4 puts you within steps of her bookstore, the southernmost outpost of Books & Books, as well as The Studios of Key West, Key West Theater, Tropic Cinema and Duval Street. Around the corner on Fleming Street, dine at Thirsty Mermaid, a sidewalk café and oyster bar inspired by the West Village. The raw bar is as tempting as the small plates (yellowfin tuna carpaccio, mac and cheese croquettes, sautéed conch). For a fine-dining experience, make dinner reservations at sister restaurant Little Pearl and ride bikes to its cozy corner on Olivia and Elizabeth streets. The lobster, shrimp and crab pot pie is an indulgence not to be missed. The Saint Key West, which has a sister property in New Orleans, brings a playful and eclectic verve to the boutique-hotel experience.

Think moody, wood-paneled lobby with velour banquettes, bright-white guest rooms, and Buddha statues lining the courtyard pool, all situated inside a historic conch cottage with a tin roof. It’s the perfect embarkation point to rediscover some of Key West’s most beloved institutions. Savor brunch at Blue Heaven in Bahama Village, where the banana pancakes are transcendental and lobster elevates classic eggs Benedict. Next door, Bésame Mucho is a beautifully curated boutique and treasure trove for everything from Diptyque candles and artisanal chocolates to handmade jewelry and luxurious bath products. Just down the block, head to Santiago’s Bodega for dinner. The romantic, Spanish tapas-style restaurant features outstanding dishes like seared beef tenderloin with blue-cheese butter and brandyflambéed haloumi cheese. Finally, don’t miss the sunset while strolling down Mallory Square or setting sail into the harbor.

Local nonprofit Nourishing the Lower Keys prepares and delivers homemade meals to people in need. Consider donating: gofundme.com/ nourishFLkeys. STOCK ISLAND Separated from Key West by the narrow Cow Key Channel and a 15-minute drive, Stock Island is home mostly to artist studios and shrimp boats. Last year, it also got its first two hotels, providing visitors with unprecedented access to this off-the-beaten-path, localsonly enclave. The Perry Hotel at Stock Island Marina Village was named one of the best design hotels of 2017. Its industrial aesthetic with clean lines, raw concrete and steel is inspired by the island’s boatyards. It’s also home to one of the area’s most sophisticated restaurants: Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar. Fusing fresh seafood with Creole flavors, Matt’s dishes are worth traveling for — especially the sumptuous grouper in thyme butter with crawfish and cornbread gnudi. For a taste of local culture, reserve a ticket for Lost Kitchen Supper Club, a pop-up dinner series held on Wednesday and Saturday nights. Lost Kitchen, run by local chefs Layla Barr and Martin Liz and restaurateur Bobby Mongelli, highlights sustainable, organic food and local purveyors and fishermen with globally themed dinners.
From top to bottom: The industrial-chic lobby of The Perry Hotel, which opened in 2017; a table full of fresh flavors at Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen & Bar; a serene porch vista at The Moorings in Islamorada.
ISLAMORADA Once you’ve settled into the utter tranquility of your private oceanfront cottage at The Moorings Village in Islamorada, you’ll wonder if Mile Marker 81 isn’t somehow positioned a little closer to heaven. This particular section of the Keys took quite a thrashing from Irma’s storm surge, and the resort, composed of 18 private cottages across 18 acres, officially reopened in mid-January. But you’d never know a hurricane swept through as you meander the lush landscaping on your way to a hammock on the beach — without another soul in sight. While there’s no restaurant at The Moorings, the property’s sister restaurants Pierre’s and Morada Bay are just across the Overseas Highway. The former is ideal for a romantic moonlit dinner on the balcony, while the latter is a laid-back spot for lunch and picture-perfect sunsets overlooking Florida Bay. Stock up your cottage’s fridge at the Trading Post, just up the road, and stop by the adjacent Village Square. There you’ll find a lovely al fresco compound with shops and Islamorada’s outpost of Key West’s Bad Boy Burrito, specializing in organic, made-from-scratch Mexican fare and fresh-pressed juices.

Puerto Rico Rises Again Is this Caribbean gem ready for well-heeled tourists months after Hurricane Maria? Our correspondent found new reasons to celebrate Old San Juan.
COURTESY (MARRIOTT)
P
erhaps the moment that might have seemed overindulgent was when the masseuse pointed to a wooden tray holding three jars of dried flowers and spices. As her hand made a Vanna White pass over the containers, she asked: “Do you want to pick a scent for your massage?” Just earlier, in the pre-massage lounge, we sprawled on chaises. Champagne and tiny squares of chocolate were within reach, tamarind or Caribbean cherry juice available, the terrycloth of our robes as soft as marshmallow, dreamy music of harps and bells coming from somewhere. When the massage began, my wife picked lavender, and I went with spiced orange. As instructed, we deeply inhaled the calming scents and then exhaled, long and slow. There was an undeniable guilt at points, living so large in Puerto Rico. While more than a half-million residents remained without power, we picked the temperature of our filets and watched as morning rainbows appeared over our resort’s pool. But this is exactly what we — what you — should be doing. Returning to Puerto Rico means helping to restore the tourist-centered economy. Residents want you and need you to come, and despite what you may have read, the island is in fact ready for you to spoil yourself.
WHERE TO STAY IN SAN JUAN Our long weekend began at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino (marriott.com), a gem of a hotel in the upscale Condado beach neighborhood. When I first stayed there in 2015, families jumped through waterfalls and fountains in the resort’s pool, businessmen crammed around tables in the casino, and the bar was packed with locals who danced to live nightly jazz. This time, the hotel was mostly full of FEMA workers, military personnel and first responders,
many working 12-hour shifts for a month straight, looking exhausted and uninterested in the entertainment. A handful of tourists at the Marriott booked their vacations before the storm, were staying there before or after a cruise, and a few just simply decided to be pioneer tourists to the still-recovering island. While not as vacation-festive as the last time I was there, the Marriott appears largely unscathed from Hurricane Maria. In fact, it was one of the few properties that remained with power. The adoquines cobblestones in Viejo San Juan, top, are as blue as ever. The Marriott’s oceanfront pool, left, is a playground for the tourists who have returned to Puerto Rico.

the life Not all the shops have reopened in San Juan, but bicycle tour guide Nancy Cruz, below, leads enthusiastic trips through the colonial streets. At Verde Mesa, bottom, pickled vegetables give a salad a pop of color and flavor.
Like Humphrey Bogart’s character in Casablanca, the hotel staff spent weeks deciding who was most deserving of open rooms. Some things are just now returning to normal; while we were there, newly printed room service menus appeared, and the oceanfront restaurant began serving dinner again. RESTAURANTS AND SHOPS TO SEEK OUT Not knowing whether to expect luxury or glamping, we headed to Viejo San Juan for dinner at Marmalade (marmaladepr.com). The azurecolored brick street outside was nearly empty, but inside the dining room buzzed. Chef Peter Schintler had rallied his staff to gut the place and start over, and now new curtains hung from arched ceilings and cushy banquettes promised a comfortable, long dinner. With less access to imports, Schintler and other chefs in town have instead looked more locally, like rabbit raised by one of his friends. While as many as 15 courses were an option, we went with a more-reasonable three and ate bright and stunning salads, a dazzlingly creamy white bean soup, and a cioppino overflowing with mussels, clams and snapper.

INDULGE | APRIL / MAY 2018 | miamiindulge.com
The next morning we worked off our food hangover on a bike ride through Viejo San Juan with Nancy Cruz, an infectiously enthusiastic guide from Rent the Bicycle (rentthebicycle.com). Shops and storefronts and entire apartment buildings in the 500-yearold colonial district remain abandoned. But Cruz led us on an optimistic tour, meeting locals who were feeding pigeons in squares reminiscent of Spain and farmers from the country with trucks of vegetables thankfully growing again. Cruz takes us past La Fortaleza, the Easter egg blue governor’s mansion, and down to the waterfront, where the hurricane clobbered a banyan tree that might have been older than the city. To right it, workers decimated its branches until it was nothing but a tall stump. Now, though, leaves as bright as limes sprout everywhere. To make the scene that much sweeter, Cruz buys a dulce de coco candy from a street vendor and hands us pieces. Creamy from the milk and shaved coconut, it leaves behind a sweetness in our mouths, even as we think about lunch.
BACK FOR MORE FOOD Leaving our bikes behind, we climb uphill to a bluff that overlooks Bahía de San Juan. Cruise ships have begun dropping off Midwesterners again, but few of them make it this far from the port. So when we open the doors to Verde Mesa (facebook.com/ verdemesa), we’re the first ones for lunch. The place looks like an interior designer’s Pinterest page, with tin ceilings and mason jar chandeliers and tables made from old sewing stands. Even though the air conditioning remained broken on our visit, chef Gabriel Hernández manages dishes that would shine at any restaurant in Coral Gables. Hernández is a 2018 semifinalist for Best Chef: South in the James Beard Foundation Awards, considered the Oscars of the food world. He’s also concentrating more now on local ingredients, shaving chayote for a tangy salad and using the salted bacalao in a modern and addictive version of a dish made by every Puerto Rican abuela. If there was a question whether you can eat world-class food in a place still recovering from Maria, Verde Mesa makes it clear you can.

The tuna pintxos are fat squares of tenderness, and the buttery filet comes looking as big as a baseball. Before our flight back to Florida, we spend the morning by the Marriott pool and exploring Condado beach. There’s a moment while washing sand off my feet at the poolside showers when I make eye contact with a hotel staff member and wonder — does he have water at home? Forget guilt. Puerto Rico needs tourists to return, to gorge themselves at the restaurants, to be pampered at the spas, to let money burn a hole through their pockets at the shops.

A SPA DAY BEFORE COMING HOME The next day we walk along the bustling streets in Condado — reminiscent of the in-transition Miami Beach of the 1990s — and down to the Spa at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel (condadovanderbilt.com). Built in 1919, the oceanfront boutique has one of the few spas up and running in San Juan, but don’t let that fact make you think it’s not fully operational. The teak-lined steam rooms and saunas are ovenwarm, the oceanfront pool cascades infinity-style toward the sand, and the multi-jet showers are designed to mimic a rainforest waterfall. After an hour of being tenderized by the masseuses, we head to dinner in the Wynwoodlike neighborhood of Santurce. A block party has broken out on a Sunday night, with men twirling their partners, and women letting their skirts artfully spin around their ankles.

A self-confessed social media addict put down Instagram and Twitter for a month and picked up yoga instead. Was it worth it? of free time. Have you ever pondered what you could do with all the time you spend stuck in traffic? That’s nothing, I discovered, compared to the time that social media eats away. Here’s what else I learned from my time detached. PROS You Will Be More Present. Instead of spending most down time tethered to my phone, I enjoyed simply being in the moment. It’s OK to be alone with your thoughts, really! It’s OK to read a book before bed (or in the bathroom) instead of scrolling through your screen. It’s OK to have a conversation with the person you’re next to.
I
am not someone who longs for simpler times. I love technology and the way it connects us across generations and time zones. And I wholeheartedly have embraced social media — Instagram in particular — much to the bewilderment of my kids, who have given my posts more than a few eye-roll emojis. You can imagine their disbelief (or was it relief?) when I declared that I was going on a social media hiatus for the entire month of January. I was determined to get my dopamine fix elsewhere. I also decided to meditate and practice yoga every day, and to switch to a plant-based diet for the month of my social media sabbatical. On New Year’s Day, I deleted the Instagram and Twitter apps from my phone (I have been living Facebook-free since the 2016 election cycle), and off I went into the silence. Almost immediately, I noticed something: a ridiculous amount

You Will Have More Time. Tons of it. If, like me, you wake up and immediately burn through 20 minutes watching Instagram stories, you
cannot get that time back. Without the pull of social media, you’ll have time to contemplate, meditate, exercise, cook breakfast, take the dog on a longer walk — everything! You Will Find Peace. Or close to it. In our current sociopolitical climate, Twitter gives me a huge amount of agita. I don’t think I realized just how much it affected my emotional well-being until I stepped away. CONS You Will Feel FOMO. Instagram and Twitter are ways I keep track of my friends and find out what events are going on around town. I definitely had a case of Fear of Missing Out at first, but that was easy enough to overcome — I just had to make a call or send a text to find out what friends were up to.
You Will Miss Posting. My primary motive for using social media is to support local creatives like chefs, baristas, farmers and entrepreneurs, and I hated that I missed out on posting about some really cool people and events in Miami. As April draws to a close, I’m pleased to report that I’m back on Instagram, but investing way less time on there than before. I’m still mostly off Twitter, and I’ve stuck with my plant-based diet about 90 percent of the time. My youngest daughter, 16, seems to be impressed by my willpower and my new zen-like outlook. Think about detaching from social media for a week, a month, whatever you like. It doesn’t have to be forever, but I guarantee that any time you spend away from the screen will change the way you look at life. WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW GIAMBARBA

Precision Medicine One of the newest approaches to cancer treatment
Precision medicine uses the genetic changes in a patient’s tumor to help optimize their treatment. It takes into account a person’s variability in genes, environment and lifestyle to allow doctors and researchers to accurately predict treatment and prevention strategies for groups of people.
S
“
ylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is leading precision medicine research in South Florida and beyond,” said Jonathan C. Trent, M.D., Ph.D., leader of the Sarcoma Program at Sylvester, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System. “We use next generation sequencing and sophisticated data analysis to identify mutations in DNA from the patient’s tumor followed by a Molecular Tumor Board where the patient’s clinical situation as well as the DNA mutations are evaluated in order to pair them with an appropriate clinical trial. We have more Phase I clinical trials than any other institution in the region.”
Jonathan C. Trent, M.D., Ph.D Director, Clinical Research Director, Sarcoma Program
Sylvester approaches cancer diagnosis and treatment for each patient individually based on their type of cancer. This means that multidisciplinary teams of dedicated, board-certified physicians with expertise studying and treating specific types of cancer oversee care. With this unique approach, patients receive care from doctors who are not only cancer specialists, but specialists in a particular type of cancer. Over the past 40 years, the National Cancer Institute has funded research to understand
what genes cause cancer. Both the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute are continuing to significantly invest in further studies of precision medicine providing grant funding to institutions, especially at academic medical centers - like Sylvester. The hope is that all treatments can one day be tailored to the genetic changes in each person’s cancer. After decades of research, scientists are realizing that tumors have genetic changes that cause them to grow and spread and that those changes may be different in every individual patient. By understanding the genetics of a cancer cell, doctors are able to prescribe the right medicine to shut down metastasis. Advancing genetic testing also will help determine optimal care to spare patients from those treatments that may not help. “Patients at Sylvester have the opportunity to have their tumor tested to determine the genetic drivers of their individual tumor and these driver genes may be targeted with a potential treatment,” said Trent. “For many patients, who had no other options left, we are able to find therapies that may be effective against the tumor.”
After my diagnosis, others had given up on me. On my life. But not at Sylvester. Stories like Jonathan’s are what drive Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center’s more than 300 cancer-focused physicians and researchers every day, as they push through the edge of possibility in pursuit of the next breakthrough, the next treatment, the next cure. My name is Jonathan, and I’m still here.

These award-winning trial attorneys are celebrating their firm’s 30th year serving Florida clients. How long has the firm been serving South Florida clients? Since 1988 — 30 years. How many attorneys work for the firm? We have 12 attorneys, with offices in Coral Gables, Boca Raton, Sarasota and Key West. What are the firm’s legal specialties? Medical malpractice, personal injury and wrongful death, complex business litigation, class actions, aviation and other significant damage cases. What is the best part about practicing law in South Florida? We cover both coasts of South Florida as well as the Florida Keys, and we love the diversity that exists in each community. We participate actively in community charities, arts and of course the legal community. What sets your firm apart from others? What distinguishes our firm from others is the peer recognition that we have been fortunate enough to receive from judges and lawyers throughout the state of Florida. We are fearless advocates who invest our time and financial resources into only credible cases. Our successful litigation track record speaks for itself and is unmatched. Is there a particular case that exemplifies the firm's work and success? There are many cases that we could cite, but Goldberg v. FPL is our most famous case. The Florida Supreme Court affirmed the largest verdict for wrongful death of a minor child and, at the same time, created new law as to the duties and responsibilities of this major utility toward the public it is supposed to serve. What is something people may not know about your firm that you would like them to know? Sf,!L(K Haggard The Haggard Law Firm’s managing partner explains his firm’s compassionate, empathetic and fervent advocacy for its clients. How long has the firm been serving South Florida clients? “Close to 50 years.” How many attorneys work for the firm? “Eight.” What are the firm’s legal specialties? “The firm's specialty is the fact it is a boutique plaintiff's trial firm representing only victims of negligence. Haggard Law has particular niches in negligent security cases and drowning cases. We have also obtained some of the largest automobile accident and slip-and-fall verdicts in Florida history.” What is the best part about practicing law in South Florida? “One great aspect of being a trial lawyer here is that South Florida is home to some of the greatest trial lawyers in the country, both on the plaintiff and defense side. Going up against the best in our area makes it that much easier when we handle cases across the United States.” Is there a particular case that exemplifies the firm's work and success? “The Sami Barrak case really changed our firm’s landscape. We represented a young man from Tunisia who was shot in a parking lot of a shopping center and he was rendered a quadriplegic. The shopping center had a history of 26 prior violent crimes. The jury returned a verdict of more than $100 million. It showed the public, corporate defendants and the legal community that safety must come

first over company profits. Our practice has changed ever since.” What is something people may not know about your firm that you would like them to know? “We have handled a number of suction entrapment cases where children have been stuck to a pool or spa drain and either drowned or suffered catastrophic brain injury as a result. Fortunately, we have been able to pass both state and federal laws to prevent these types of incidents from occurring in the future. That type of accomplishment makes this high stakes law practice worth it in the end.” Does the firm have any major plans for 2018-’19? “We have had the overwhelming responsibility of representing families whose lives have changed forever, parents of children who have drowned and crime victims who have suffered unspeakable trauma. An epidemic across the planet and our country is the proliferation of human trafficking. Florida has unfortunately become one of the go-to states for traffickers to operate. We intend to not only file several human trafficking cases in 2018-’19, but to strengthen the laws for holding those accountable who facilitate human trafficking such as hotels, massage parlors and strip clubs.” The Haggard Law Firm, 330 Alhambra Circle, Coral Gables; 305-446-5700; haggardlawfirm.com; mah@haggardlawfirm.com; info@haggardlawfirm.com.

How long has the firm been serving South Florida clients? “Our firm opened its doors in 1989.” How many attorneys work for the firm? “Initially, the firm consisted of two lawyers: Barry Wayne and myself. Today, we have five lawyers, all of whom devote their full attention to handling marital and family law matters.” What are the firm’s legal specialities? “Bluestein and Wayne, P.A., limits its practice to the handling of marital and family law issues, representing high income earners and people of significant wealth with regard to divorce, separation, prenuptial agreements, post nuptial agreements and paternity, inclusive of those involving same-sex couples.” What is the best part about practicing law in South Florida? “The opportunities presented by dealing with diversity in all of its forms: diversity of people, diversity of ideas, diversity of commercial endeavors, diversity of social environments, diversity of industries. It is a broad palette, creating challenges to a lawyer’s analytical skills and his or her ability to create meaningful winning solutions for clients.” What sets your firm apart from others? “We have a unique assemblage of people who have experience with sophisticated valuation and income issues, asset and debt structure, as well as an ability to internally collaborate and offer differing perspectives to case issues.” Is there a particular case that exemplifies the firm’s work and success? “The desire of people to retain us is enhanced by their understanding that we are closed-mouthed regarding their personal lives and that we don’t promote ourselves by publicizing our relationships with them.” What is something people may not know about your firm that you would like them to know? “The cumulative total of our lawyers’ experience approximates 120 years, and we have been blessed with a stable of professional and support personnel that benefits those we represent. Since taking over in August, I have visited six continents, 14 countries and more than 45 cities around the world. In addition, I am a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.” What are the firm’s legal specialties? “We are a boutique firm specializing in estate, business and asset protection planning. Our estate planning services include preparation of wills, trusts, powers of attorney and related documents, tax reduction strategies, probate, guardianship and trust administration. Our business practice includes selection and creation of appropriate entities, considering tax consequences, ease or complexity of creation and operation, business succession issues and the relationships between the owners. Asset protection planning involves an assessment of a client’s exposure to potential liabilities and counseling them on how to reduce that exposure.” What is the best part about practicing law in South Florida? “The diversity of the clients we serve is the best part. The variety of issues we see, as well as the people themselves, keep our practice interesting, challenging and rewarding.” What sets your firm apart from others? “We combine the experience gained while practicing at several of South Florida's major law firms with the personal service, special attention and flexibility only a boutique firm can provide.” Is there a particular case you can mention that exemplifies the firm's work and success? “Years before the recent recession, I implemented an estate plan for a highly leveraged real estate developer, which included a structure to protect his accumulated assets. When real estate values bottomed out, he found himself with mortgage and other debt in excess of $25 million. They foreclosed on his properties, but were unable to attach any of his other assets. If he had not had engaged in the planning we did for him, he would have lost everything he had, except his homestead.”

How long have you been serving South Florida clients? “I have been working as an appellate attorney in South Florida for 37 years: 24 years at Podhurst Orseck, P.A., and 13 years at my own firm, Joel S. Perwin, P.A.” How many attorneys work for the firm? “I am the only attorney in my firm, and I handle all matters personally. I have found that there is no area of appellate litigation — such as reviewing the trial record, legal research, formulation of the arguments and factual statement, writing and editing the brief, or conducting oral argument — that I do not need to do myself.” What are the firm’s legal specialties? “Although I was a federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., my practice now is entirely civil, and I handle cases of every kind. Typically I am hired for my expertise in appellate practice and procedure, rather than any specific substantive specialty.” What is the best part about practicing law in South Florida? “From the time I came home from Washington to Miami in 1981, I have been taken by the dynamic nature of the practice here. It is not entrenched or hierarchical, as in some legal communities.” What sets your firm apart from others? “One thing is the benefit of my 37-year experience as an appellate lawyer, which has brought an appreciation of the pitfalls and nuances of appellate litigation, and repeated experiences with the appellate judges of Florida and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. There isn’t very much procedurally or substantively that I haven’t encountered at some point.” Is there a particular case that exemplifies the firm’s work and success? “The case I’m most proud of is Burger King Corp. v. Rudzewicz, in which the U.S. Supreme Court addressed the issue of what’s called long-arm jurisdiction — the constitutional permissibility of a plaintiff’s attempt to bring an out-of-state defendant to Florida to defend a lawsuit here. Burger King has become an important decision that is taught in every law school.”

What sets your firm apart? “Our firm provides clients with outstanding representation in each phase of resolving a legal dispute. A lot of attorneys talk about track records, but what sets us apart is that we have taken on the best and largest firms in America — and won. As National Law Journal has described, our firm punches far above its weight class and is equipped to take on any case, anywhere in the country.” What is a memorable case that has helped shape or inspire your career? “It all started with Watergate. I was only 29 years old when I defended John D. Ehrlichman, a senior advisor to President Nixon, in the Watergate trials. Not only did this give me the opportunity to play a significant role in two of the largest trials in U.S. history at a very young age, it crystallized for me how essential lawyers are to the very core of our democracy. It also set me on a path toward representing plaintiffs whose rights have been violated — and using the courtroom as an instrument for changing laws that are unconstitutional.” What is the best part about practicing in South Florida? “As far as I am concerned, this community is the greatest place in America. But what makes Miami so special is that it is a place where you can advance as far and as fast as your skills will let you. It doesn’t matter who your parents or grandparents are. It only matters who you are and how hard you are willing to work.” What inspired you to go into law? “It was a complete accident that I ended up in the legal profession, a path which began serendipitously after a night of drinking in college. My fraternity brothers thought it would be funny to wake me up the next morning and take me with them to the LSAT. Before I knew it, I had a No. 2 pencil in hand, and admission to the University of Florida’s law school shortly thereafter. Because of those series of events, I began re-examining my strengths and weaknesses, and concluded that I was indeed more suited to be a lawyer than anything else.”
Andrew C. Hall The Managing partner of Miami’s Hall, Lamb, Hall & Leto, P.A. reflects on his storied career and his firm’s bright future.
What is something surprising that people might not know about you or your firm? “Our firm has a tough exterior but a big heart, something that has been inspired in me by my wonderful and kind wife, Gail Meyers. We pay a lot of attention to giving back, and in ways that are often not publicly visible.” Hall, Lamb, Hall & Leto, P.A., 2665 South Bayshore Drive, Penthouse One, Miami; 305-374-5030; hlhlawfirm.com, andyhall@hlhlawfirm.com.

MORADA (ARIA ON THE BAY)
We woke up like this. Whether we were born here or moved here, we chose to live in Miami for a litany of reasons. Not the least of them is our city’s effortless and endless beauty. We celebrate the appeal of our collective home by sitting down with a couple who embody South Florida’s sense of community — they’re all about family, friends and charity — and live in one of its most historic and spectacular houses. We look inside six luxury condominiums where size does matter: Owners have combined multiple units into colossal palaces in the sky. And because even Miamians need to vacation somewhere, we asked some prominent local residents to play show and tell with their out-of-town homes. Beauty is indeed everywhere. In Miami, it’s every day.

You never know where you will meet your other half. For Sasha and Gordon Stula, that place happened to be a hair salon in Moscow. Sasha’s friends ran an outpost of the world-famous TONI&GUY Salon, and she stopped by for a party they were hosting at the shop. Gordon, who was in town on business for his cosmetics-distribution company, had ducked in for a trim of his voluminous hair. With a smirk from ear to ear, Gordon recalls now the moment “she walked in wearing an evening gown and sat next to me. We started chatting. The rest is history.” Fifteen years of marriage and four sons later, the Stulas look back on it all with pride and joy from the plush, white-linen couches in their living room. The comfortable room — like each one in their sprawling, nearly 12,000-square-foot home — is tastefully dotted with items the family has accumulated on its travels and is bathed in loads of natural light. A montage of contemporary works by Cuban artist Kcho prompts conversation, and everywhere you look you see modern luxuries living harmoniously among historic beauty. 104

The Stulas’ home, Stonegate Manor, is tucked within the gated Stonegate community in Coral Gables’ exclusive Ponce/Davis neighborhood. Built in 1923 for Oliver Sollitt, a retired Chicago building contractor and legislator, the home is unique for its elaborate coral-rock façade, which completely envelopes the six-bedroom, eightbathroom manse. Miami-Dade County designated it a historic site in 1981, and the home’s former owners completely renovated it at the turn of the 21st century. Famed Miami architect Charles Pawley handled the facelift, staying true to the home’s original design. Swiss landscape architect Enzo Enea crafted the property’s lush greenery, soaring palms and protective hedges. When the Stulas moved there from Brickell Key almost nine years ago, they were less interested in the home’s size or historical significance than in its proximity to good schools for their boys. The family makes the most of its time together — Sasha and Gordon and their 16-, 10-, 9- and 7-year-olds — by taking cross-country road trips or just staying local. Nothing makes them happier than catching a movie or going to the beach on Fisher Island. Sasha said they love ambling around Wynwood for the “simply enjoyable” experiences of walking, people-watching, grabbing a coffee. They also love Marky’s Gourmet Market off of Biscayne Boulevard, rummaging through the refrigerated shelves of epicurean delicacies. 106

This couple is as unpretentious as they come. They’re the kind who quietly donate to charities, not the the kind who yearn to be photographed at every black-tie gala. Yes, they vacation in the Hamptons. But they’re likely to arrive there in an RV (OK, a very nice RV) that they’ve driven from Gordon’s childhood home in Milwaukee. They take pride in the small things in life that they consider to be luxuries: throwing a football with their boys in their meticulously manicured front yard, or hosting a BBQ for a select group of friends who are like family. While Gordon frequently travels internationally for business, when he’s home he volunteers as an assistant football coach at his sons’ school. Gordon has long considered Miami his home, and he persuaded Sasha, who is from Kiev, to live here with him. At Stonegate Manor, their shared interests in travel, family heirlooms and global art are apparent in the home’s show-stopping interiors, which Sasha designed. She put her personal touches on everything from the home gym to — her absolute favorite — the professional-grade, state-ofthe-art chef’s kitchen. It’s where the Stula clan has shared countless family meals, holiday feasts and homework sessions. Sasha has lent her eye for design to close friends who have pleaded with her to work on their homes and offices. “I was self-taught, but they trusted me,” she said. miamiindulge.com | APRIL / MAY 2018 | INDULGE

Besides her design work, Sasha also curates her husband’s wardrobe, preferring the Italian men’s shop Artigiano located near Merrick Park and bespoke clothier Seize sur Vingt in New York City. A similar local-meets-international aesthetic permeates Sasha’s closets. “My mother was my fashion inspiration,” Sasha said. “I was raised in Soviet times, when there was a lack of possibility, but she was always creative. She was classy and stylish. I was also inspired by Vienna and the time that I lived there before I met Gordon.” That explains her fondness for jewelry from Girls Dreams, a luxury boutique in Vienna. She also shops vintage whenever possible, and lately she’s been supporting Just Bee Queen, a collection of upcycled pieces by Cuban-born, Miami-raised founder Maria Strauss. “I love her one-of-a-kind deconstructed clothes,” Sasha said. Gordon credits Sasha for wearing many hats yet still having a sense of humor that’s necessary in a household full of boys. They both acknowledge that laughter and good communication are vital to keeping life in perspective. “When we lie in bed and talk, it clears any slates,” she said. Agreeing with this, Gordon goes back to complimenting his wife, then he attempts to define her overall style. He lands on a description that also fits their extraordinary Stonegate Manor, the home they’ve made and filled as partners: “a blend of classic and modern mixed comfortably together.” miamiindulge.com | APRIL / MAY 2018 | INDULGE

ROOM TO BREATHE
Miami’s new boom of luxury condominiums has found a way to spread out while building up: by combining multiple units into one massive home.
or decades, the appeal of suburban living has had two major advantages over downtown dwelling: space and shopping. Most downtown real estate is compact by comparison, and many retailers and restaurants moved their operations years ago from urban cores to suburbia’s shopping plazas and malls. But as a legion of luxury condominiums has risen from Miami’s sand and limestone, a new trend in the high-end market has shifted attention back to South Florida’s cities. Downtown Miami and Fort Lauderdale again boast thriving arts, entertainment, dining and cultural destinations. The only missing link — space — has now been accounted for thanks to the creative thinking of architects and condo owners. Purchasing multiple
condo units and combining them into one unit gives residents everything they’re looking for in swanky downtown living: plenty of breathing room, access to everything the city has to offer, and of course stunning views. “Our city is becoming more vertical, and now people are preferring condos in the urban core versus the commute into the suburbs,” said Alicia Cervera Lamadrid, managing partner and principal of Cervera Real Estate. “Plus, downtown is a beautiful place to live, so it’s a win-win. There aren’t a lot of immediate choices for larger units, so combining units is a good alternative.” Here are six new and under-construction buildings where some owners have combined condo units, bringing a solution to cramped city living with mansions in the sky.

PALAZZO DEL SOL
Located on exclusive Fisher Island, Palazzo Del Sol is undoubtedly one of Miami’s most desirable addresses. As continuous requests came in from buyers to combine units, developers took note and merged Palazzo Del Sol’s two floor-plan options into a 10,000-square-foot dream home, priced at $17.4 million. Taking the level of luxury one step higher, Artefacto transformed the five-bedroom condo into a contemporary space with sleek grays and silvers and elegant finishes. Sitting in the huge living room, surrounded by whitewashed hardwood floors and substantial art, you could almost picture yourself in a suburban manse — until the sprawling views of the city and ocean remind you where you are.
Artefacto leaned on elegant grays and silvers to transform a five-bedroom condominium unit at Palazzo Del Sol in Fisher Island. The 10,000-square-foot home is priced at $17.4 million.

Featuring seven bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a private hammam spa, butler kitchen, library, wine room, screening room and game suite, the unit also has soaring ceilings and views of the city or ocean from almost every room. ARIA ON THE BAY
Elevating condo life, Aria on the Bay’s gorgeous sky homes are the perfect alternative to suburban living. Their most exclusive floor plan — the A line — has been sought after by celebrities and socialites. Rapper Timbaland recently bought two units and is working on combining them. These luxurious A-line condos start at $3.1 million. Combining two gives owners 4,724 or more of square footage to play with. Additionally, the residences come fully finished and equipped with beautiful Italian cabinetry, Brizo faucets, Bosch appliances and a private elevator. Towering windows lead to wraparound terraces with unobstructed views of Biscayne Bay. 1770 North Bayshore Drive, Miami; 305-573-0666; ariaonthebay.com.
ECHO BRICKELL
This boutique building in the heart of Brickell has taken personalization to another level. To suit their specific needs, each owner was given the opportunity to alter finishes, design elements and even floor plans. Eight chose to purchase multiple units and combine them. Designed by renowned architect Carlos Ott, no two homes in Echo are exactly the same. Units have been combined vertically and horizontally, from $3.8 million to the $42 million Ott-designed penthouse. That 13,518-squarefoot, two-story combined unit has four bedrooms, seven baths, his-and-her walk-in closets, private spa and gym, home theater, office, ceilings up to 23 feet, and its pièce de résistance: a 27-foot indoor pool. 1451 Brickell Avenue, Miami; 786-360-1904; echobrickell.com. Top to bottom: The dining room, master bedroom and dressing areas of Echo Brickell’s combined condo units have floor-to-ceiling windows revealing city and water views.
Fully finished units at Aria on the Bay can be merged into one bigger unit — something rapper Timbaland is working on for his home there.

he most beautiful qualities of a color are in its transparent state,” American painter Maxfield Parrish once said, “with the light shining through the color.” Parrish’s classical canvases radiate with a distinctly saturated look that made his landscapes romantic and otherworldly. No doubt he would have been transfixed by the colors of Cappellini’s new Luce table collection. Simple and striking, the cube design shines from extra-clear stained laminated glass that has enhanced transparency. Available in three sizes (35-by-35, 40-by-40 and 45-by-45 inches), the tables refract light through the cubes, illuminating the spaces around them in a rich, warm glow. $2,500-$2,800.
