editor’s letter
I
t’s easy to see what makes INDULGE a luxury lifestyle magazine: glossy pages full of fancy things, beautiful people and multimillion-dollar homes. Around this time of year, that sense of affluence for some can feel amplified. There are galas to attend, presents to buy and vacations to take. Yet for others, the holidays carry acute feelings of financial insecurity, personal loss and countless other adversities. A subtle change I made when I started editing INDULGE was to tweak the theme of this edition, from the Holiday Issue to Holiday Gifts & Givers. I wanted to recognize not only the material objects we exchange and the celebrations we have in November and December, but also the people and organizations in our community who give back and help others, all year round. Our Movers department always contains profiles of impressive people who are the pillars of Miami. This issue’s lot is among the most magnanimous and monumental that I can recall featuring in our pages. You may recognize Katie Phang (Rainmaker, p. 43) from her frequent appearances on MSNBC as a legal analyst. But you probably don’t know about all she does behind the scenes, like being the only female partner in her Miami law firm and advocating for the next generation of female attorneys. Another great Miamian in the spotlight this month is David Lawrence (Author, p. 46), a former Miami Herald publisher and current chair of the The Children’s Movement of Florida, who has documented his life and career in a new memoir. Of course, gift-giving is inextricably tied to the holidays, so we compiled our best-ever guide to help you find the perfect presents for everyone in your life (p. 93). We asked local experts in various fields to tell us what they’d like to give and get this year, and their suggestions run the gamut from Hamilton tickets to a dog-toy subscription service. Our cover star, athlete-turnedbusinesswoman Julian Reynolds, chimed in with six great gift ideas for fellow fashionistas, including a pair of Gucci loafers that channel the current sneaker craze. I like to think that INDULGE mirrors the best of Miami: at times flashy and glamorous, but also full of compassion and conscientiousness. Wherever you find yourself this holiday season, I hope you are able to give as much as you receive.

I
nspired by my mom since I was a little girl, I’ve always been an early holiday decorator and shopper. If I haven’t selected three to five uncommon and everso-delightful gifts by the time Santa’s Enchanted Forest begins testing its lights in early October, I start feeling a bit behind — as is the case this year. Thankfully, our annual Holiday Gifts & Givers issue really delivers, and I’m overjoyed to discover more than 60 fabulous ideas from 11 connoisseurs of good taste. Let the shopping season begin with a few age-appropriate recommendations from our youngest contributor, Fabiola Isabel Comas (p. 96). This amazing 11-year-old has impeccable taste in theater, getaways and bags, like her favorite Vendula Coffee Truck Grab Bag. My Vendula choice is the Prosecco Bar Truck Pouch, but each is a unique and whimsical work of art. Fabi notes that these bags are absolutely shareable between moms and daughters, and I wholeheartedly agree! For the discerning men in your life, Brandon Tanner (p. 95) inspires with several gift choices. I’m positive my husband Bill would appreciate his very own exquisitely hand-tailored blazer from Stitched. And I suspect he may roll his eyes when he finds Lesley DeCanio out I signed up Samson, our dachshund, for BarkBox, one of dog expert Meg Connolly’s suggestions for pet owners (p. 94). If all these imaginative gift ideas aren’t enough, peruse Launching Now (p. 26), where Eric Barton recommends a handful of events and experiences to enjoy in the 305. There's nothing like fresh-picked fruit, like lychees and limes, from a local farm, and the Taste of Redland program delivers just that. Or purchase some tickets to a local food and wine festival for a friend… and then join them for the fun! Your choices abound — the Seed, Doral and Coconut Grove fests are all lined up for November, when our weather is just right for outdoor tasting and sipping. And if it’s sips you’re savoring, check out the always-bubbly Heath Porter with his pairing recommendations in Pour (p. 70), like a 2016 Gewürztraminer for your next pig roast. As he describes it, “the sweetness of the wine with the saltiness of the roast pork is yin and yang magic.” All five of his selections are impressive, but LOL-amusing is how this witty sommelier manages to weave together Disney and Pitbull in describing the Broadbent Madeira. He can talk wine to me anytime! Speaking of wine, a glass enjoyed on a balcony with a spa tub certainly has its charms, and that’s exactly what’s on the agenda at the newly renovated and casually luxurious Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, as reported by our editor Evan Benn in Staycation (p. 78). Prefer going farther afield? Hop a flight to NOLA for dinner at one of the celebrated restaurants of former Miami chef Nina Compton, named 2018 Best Chef: South by the James Beard Foundation (Escape, p. 88). No matter how you enjoy the season, all of us at INDULGE hope our 2018 Gifts & Givers issue helps put you in the holiday spirit. I will be taking advantage of this great gift selection to finish checking off my “Nice” list, and to make Mami proud. I may even do so with a glass of Joy — that is, 2004 Iron Horse Joy sparkling wine from Sonoma, one of Heath’s expert picks. Cheers!

Zen on Your Neck A necklace from Komuso Design may look like just a decorative charm. But it’s actually meant to help you breathe deeper and thus live more in the moment. Called The Shift, the necklace designed by Fort Lauderdale’s Todd and Vanessa Steinberg was inspired by a flute used by Japanese monks. The company says that breathing through it occasionally will train you to take more meaningful breaths. At $85 for matte slate or $115 for 14-karat gold, even if it doesn’t lower stress, it’s at least a guaranteed conversation-starter. komusodesign.com.

Tree Lighting Starts Now
CityPlace Doral gets the holiday party started with a tree-lighting ceremony from 4 to 8 p.m. on November 17. The event includes dance troupes, fountain shows and strolling entertainers. The main plaza will transform into a winter wonderland — or the closest thing possible in South Florida — playing host that night to a Light Up the Holidays concert with LED ballerinas and salsa dancers. cityplacedoral.com.
Museum Park in downtown Miami will transform into a yoga and wellness festival on Veterans Day (November ), with the goal of remembering those who served. The event, hosted by the nonprofit Warrior For Life organization, will feature yoga classes, music and meditation. It’s free for veterans, and donations from everyone else will benefit a Miami yoga retreat for combat vets. facebook.com/warriorforlifeinc.
Swim in Style As far as bathing suits go, women have tons of options: trendy one-pieces, cool wraps or sexy bikinis. Men? Choices seem to be limited to baggy board shorts in small, medium or large. That’s not the case now that Orlebar Brown has rolled into town. Photographer Adam Brown started the West London company after realizing nobody was making tailor-made swimwear for men. The company has a store open at Brickell City Centre and is working on two more: at The Setai in Miami Beach and at Bal Harbour Shops. The Runway Show Fashion to Fight Cancer
Eva Chen
For her debut appearance at the Miami Book Fair, Eva Chen is admittedly nervous. Not about meeting fans or reading from her new children’s book, Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes. “It’s the angle,” she said. Most pictures taken at book fairs are of a fan standing next to a seated author. “I’m totally thinking about it. I don’t want 100 photos of me collapsed over a folding table!” This should come as no surprise to people who know Chen, former editor of Lucky magazine and current head of Instagram’s fashion partnerships. She’s a social media pro and even has a trending hashtag, #EvaChenPose, devoted to the way she carries herself in pics. The th Miami Book Fair will be Chen’s first time appearing as a published author at a major fair. She’ll join more than authors November - for events in four languages. Chen’s book, about a girl who is transported into the lives of famous women by trying on their shoes, prints this month. Aside from her angle prep, Chen said she’s also thinking about what to wear. “Breezy floral dresses are trending right now, and I’m looking at something that’s fashionable but still appropriate for a book fair,” she said. “Everyone says to wear practical shoes, so I’m thinking practical shoes that look impractical.” Chen’s reading is at : p.m. November in the book fair’s Children’s Alley; tickets are free for kids under , $ for adults and $ for seniors. miamibookfair.com.

The Art AfriCOBRA
Half a century ago, a group of African-American artists in Chicago came together to form the African Commune on Bad Relevant Artists. Its goal: to make sure minority voices were heard in the arts world and beyond. From November 27 through April 7, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami exhibits a retrospective of the works by AfriCOBRA. The show, Messages to the People, illustrates how the group impacted generations of minority artists. A special Art Basel artist reception takes place from 8 to 11 p.m. on December 6. mocanomi.org.

THE AUTHOR
It’s inspiring and uplifting to hear stories of those who are winning their fights against cancer. Now imagine the people behind those stories (like Celine Jose, pictured) as stars of a runway show. That’s the idea behind the inaugural Cure by Design Survivor Fashion Show, which takes place at 7 p.m. on November 8, when cancer survivors hit the runway at Brickell City Centre. The show is a collaboration between the mall, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society, which will benefit from money raised that night. Tickets are $75. curebydesignmiami.org.

My
BEAUTY
BLACK BOOK
Manhattan’s hottest workout, now available in Miami, is one of those fitness movements that’s hard to categorize: Founded by Taryn Toomey, The Class melds yoga, boot-camp-style cardio and a killer soundtrack into a cathartic experience. Just ask regulars like Jennifer Aniston and Christy Turlington Burns. “It’s a wringing out of your body, mind and life,” Toomey said. “Nobody is preaching or teaching anything dogmatic.” Screaming, yelling and moaning are encouraged. “My favorite part is when the whole room is dropped in. The music is pumping, the sweat is pouring, the goosebumps are alive.” You can find The Class on select Saturdays through May at The Sacred Space, a setting so futuristic and sublime it’s practically out of a Kubrick movie. Register at taryntoomey.com/miami. Toomey told us some of her favorite ways to practice self-care and gift from the heart:

GLOWING REVIEWS Imagine if every day were Black Friday at your dermatologist’s office. That’s the concept of CosmeticPlans.com, a new, firstof-its-kind service that — for $10 a month — grants members access to board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons for less than typical office visits. Sign up and you’re automatically connected to the company’s network of participating physicians, which stretches from South Miami to Palm Beach. From there, you can receive preferred rates and discounts (typically 20 percent) on procedures such as injectables, fillers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, CoolSculpting, laser resurfacing and hair removal. Bonus: Initial consultations are free (a $150 value). “It’s like ClassPass for beauty,” said founder Jacqueline Dascal Chariff (pictured, above). “We wanted to provide an avenue to quality practitioners at an affordable price and ensure a top-notch experience.” For someone who’s interested in a big-ticket cosmetic procedure or simply devoted to regular celebritystyle tweaks, what better me-gift?

WHAT: Make-A-Wish Southern Florida built excitement for its 24th Annual Ball with a VIP Kickoff party and a reveal of the gala’s theme: Summer of Love. WHERE: In-kind donor The InterContinental Miami, a longtime supporter and host venue of the Ball, welcomed Make-A-Wish for the preview night. WHO: Shareef Malnik, Gala Chair of the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball and proprietor of The Forge; Robert Hill, Gala Host and General Manager of The InterContinental Miami; and Norm Wedderburn, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida — the trio affectionately known as the Three Amigos — served as hosts for the evening. WHY: Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted more than 11,000 wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. The annual Ball, this year on November 3, plays a major role in raising funds for those efforts. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MANNY HERNANDEZ / MANNYOFMIAMI.COM

the local SOURCE Friends Rees Escobar and Steven Sanz opened Lower East Coast as a nod to the streetwear brands, indie ’zines and hangout spots of their youth.
R
ees Escobar leans casually over a minimal white counter at Lower East Coast, the store he founded late last year with his friend Steven Sanz. “Growing up in the mid-to-late ’90s, the internet wasn’t a big thing yet. So whenever we wanted to meet like-minded people, we hung out at the same central locations,” Escobar said. He mentions places like Flavor Station in downtown Miami and Ghetto Thang in Perrine as his former go-to spots to meet friends, thumb through magazines and buy indie-brand clothing. “Those shops were super-important to me growing up.” But now, he says, “everything is on the phone or the internet. That person-to-person experience is sort of lost.”

Lower East Coast cofounders Steven Sanz, above left, and Rees Escobar met while working in the music industry and became friends; Sanz was a producer, and Escobar was his manager. They’re opening a new store in the Design District this month.

BACK TO BASICS With Lower East Coast, Escobar and Sanz are confident that they’ve re-launched a ground-zero for youth culture in Miami. Frequented by 20- and 30-somethings interested in exploring fashion, sports and design through an urban lens, Lower East Coast carries an array of collectible magazines, contemporary brands, and a selection of hats, stickers and memorabilia that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in South Florida. “We wanted to create a hub for local youth, so they could explore things they probably haven’t seen anywhere else,” Sanz said. The two met several years ago as collaborators in the music industry. Sanz, a longtime producer, was previously managed by Escobar, whose current roster includes the rising hip-hop star Denzel Curry. Their shared love of the street aesthetic drove them to open Lower East Coast on a now-bustling street in the heart of Allapattah. MIX OF OLD AND NEW That might include some hard-to-find domestic and international magazines, the majority of which are either no longer in publication or simply rare to find in a brick-and-mortar shop. Shelves include titles like Kinfolk, an art, design and culture mag whose editorial board includes the inimitable art curator Hans Ulrich Obrist; Victory, a sports magazine that emphasizes the beauty of sports through large-format photography; and Terremoto, a Mexico-based magazine covering the region’s art and culture. “We love anything design-friendly that you can pick up and see the past in,” Escobar said. The shop’s apparel selection includes Stray Rats, a made-in-Miami brand you can only find locally at Lower East Coast. Tees by Onyx Collective and Bedlum also line the shop. Escobar and Sanz have plans to expand into workwear and add more upscale streetwear brands, as well as design-oriented workshops and community discussions. In October, the duo made the decision to close their Allapattah location and will reopen LEC this month in the Miami Design District. Everything in the shop is sourced by Escobar and Sanz, who work with suppliers in Miami and all over the world. “Instead of having to shop online, we want you to get your hands on it,” Sanz said. Added Escobar: “We want kids to know that if they’re making T-shirts or getting into design, they don’t have to leave Miami to do it.” WORDS BY NICOLE MARTINEZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA
Lower East Coast, 84 Northeast 39th Street, Miami; instagram.com/lowereastcoast.
Design-focused magazines are a main attraction at Lower East Coast, with indie titles from all over the globe. The shop also sells apparel and accessories from Stray Rats, a made-in-Miami brand, and music from artists like Denzel Curry, a rapper from Carol City whose work is managed by Rees Escobar.

BECOMING A TELEVISION PERSONALITY “When I was a prosecutor, I worked for the local CBS affiliate, giving commentary during Michael Jackson’s second trial, then on Robert Blake and Terri Schiavo. I kept in touch with people who moved on to cable news.” SWITCHING NETWORKS “I was at Fox when NBC/MSNBC offered me a position as a legal contributor. It was a step up for me, but it was a weird transition. I obviously alienated some fans and got new ones.”
A good day: ‘Surviving five minutes on live TV without being somebody’s GIF or ending up on YouTube bloopers!’
VITALS 43. Katie Phang was born in Miami to Jean, a retired nurse, and Michael, a former dean of the University of Miami’s College of Engineering. Her father, now battling Alzheimer’s disease, arrived in the United States at age 19 from Seoul, South Korea, with $2.43 in his pocket. He went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as his Ph.D., in engineering. “He’s the American dream,” his daughter said. After she graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High School, Phang earned a political science degree from Yale and a law degree from the University of Miami, then became a prosecutor in the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. “It was the least-paying job

I’ve ever had, but as a lawyer, the most rewarding. Day One, I was in the courtroom picking a jury.” These days, she’s not only a partner in Berger Singerman’s Miami office but a frequent legal contributor for NBC/ MSNBC. She lives in Miami Shores with her husband (lawyer Jonathan Feldman), their daughter (Charlie, 4) and two miniature schnauzers. MOTTO “Always be a first-rate version of yourself and not a second-rate version of someone else.” MOTHERHOOD “I negotiate with a terrorist every day! She’s a handful and wildly off-the-charts smart and mouthy. It’s cool to be a mom and have her in my life, but it’s tough.”
PHILANTHROPIC ENDEAVORS “I’m active in the Florida Bar, and we do a lot of pro bono work. I was the Vice President for Dress for Success, I’m VP of the University of Miami executive board, and I chair the Miami-Dade Florida Association for Women Lawyers, which is a new nonprofit that raises funds for deserving female law students.”
BALANCING ACT “You have so many competing demands [as a working mom]. She should be the priority, and some days she’s not. Work-life balance is a unicorn. It just doesn’t exist. I’m the only female partner in the Miami office. It’s not because the firm is not encouraging it, but I’m aware of it.” BEST DAY ON THE JOB “Just getting through the day and accomplishing as much as I can: being in a hearing and achieving a good result for my client; surviving five minutes on live national television without being somebody’s GIF or ending up on YouTube bloopers; making sure my kid is happy and healthy.”
PITCH PERFECT “I love to sing. I sing in the car, at work, anywhere I can without getting kicked out. I was in an all-female a cappella group at Yale: Whim ’n Rhythm. We went on a world tour after graduation. That was amazing.” PREPARING FOR THE HOLIDAYS “We just started a kitchen renovation, and I don’t know how we’re going to survive. I ordered McDonald’s on Uber Eats last night and ate a bowl of cereal after work the night before that. I’m excited to have a wine fridge in my new kitchen!” CELEBRATING EVERYTHING “My husband is Jewish, and my daughter goes to a Jewish school, but I’m not Jewish so we celebrate a little of everything. WRITING AGAIN Lawrence has served on the Governor’s Children and Youth Cabinet and twice chaired the Florida Partnership for School Readiness. In 2002 and 2008 he led successful campaigns for The Children’s Trust, a dedicated source of early intervention and prevention funding for children in Miami-Dade County. He credits his role as a children’s advocate to his wife, Roberta, and Dr. Jane and Gerald Katcher, who supported him in launching The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, which ultimately became The Children’s Movement of Florida in 2010. It’s a wonder it took him until now to pen his memoir. When friends and colleagues asked when he would write one, he’d always respond with the throwaway line, “When I am old enough.” Three years ago he began researching and writing about decades of collected memories and life experiences. Recapturing the past and figuring out what might interest others during that journey brought him tremendous joy, he said, especially because he is proud to have led a life of undiminished optimism and idealism.

fter a rewarding, multi-decade career as a reporter, editor and publisher — advocating for the truth — David Lawrence shifted gears, to advocating for children. The former Miami Herald publisher and current chair of The Children’s Movement of Florida describes both paths, and the satisfaction they’ve provided him, in his new memoir, A Dedicated Life: Journalism, Justice and a Chance for Every Child. In 1996, then-Governor Lawton Chiles asked

Lawrence to lead a statewide task force on school readiness. Three years later, Lawrence’s knowledge of childhood development, care and education prompted him to step away from one career to pursue another. “I decided to ‘retire’ [from the Herald in 1999] to work full-time on helping children succeed in school and life,” he said. “That, in turn, with help from many others, led to The Children’s Trust and to making available free pre-K for every 4-year-old child in Florida.”
LIFETIME OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS He’s equally thrilled to have debuted his book at the iconic Books & Books in Coral Gables. “I’ve known and admired [Books & Books owner] Mitchell Kaplan for three decades,” Lawrence said. “There is no better bookseller and book lover in my life. His support for this book is a very big deal for me.” One of Lawrence’s proudest accomplishments was helping to secure a $150-million investment in early-childhood intervention and prevention for The Children’s Trust. It speaks to the goal of providing all children the basics of health, education, nurturing and love. He and his wife feel privileged to give back and make a difference, which they do by contributing to all sorts of good causes, with matters of children and justice and fairness being front and center. His favorites right now are being a trustee of Florida A&M University and serving for decades on the Everglades Foundation and Americans for Immigrant Justice boards. “Maybe my favorite quotation comes from Horace Mann: ‘Be ashamed to die before you have won some battle for humanity.’” WORDS BY JOSIE GULLIKSEN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

the movers “Everything I do is related to giving back,” she said. “If our goal was to fill a building with interesting companies, this would not be the job for me. There is a larger mission, and it includes not only a more robust entrepreneurial ecosystem for Miami, but a more inclusive one.” In the quest to give back, Martinez-Kalinina is the founder and a board member of the Awesome Foundation Miami, which provides monthly grants to individuals with innovative ideas. She’s also the founder of Global Shapers Miami, a young, entrepreneurial group committed to helping transform Miami, and she organizes an art exhibit called Love Lost Miami.

atalia Martinez-Kalinina throws her head back and laughs when asked about holiday gift-giving. She has a secret, she says. Being ultra-organized — Martinez-Kalinina has a master’s degree in organizational psychology from Columbia University — she has an Excel spreadsheet on which all her friends and family are listed. Columns are filled with each person’s favorite books, accessories and anything they may have admired or off-handedly mentioned in the past year. Nothing escapes her. It’s on the list.

No doubt, this skill set and her authentic passion for anything she commits to have contributed to the runaway success of Cambridge Innovation Center Miami, an 80,000-square-foot creative workspace near Wynwood that she manages. It’s occupied with entrepreneurs, startups and scientists who work in a communal environment. Open for two years, and one of seven CICs worldwide, the building’s interior is arranged with open spaces designed to foster community and provide access to hands-on staff who help with ideas, funding and connections.
CIC also has the only shared wetlab facility south of Orlando. It allows scientists to perform experiments in a co-working space, which significantly lowers the cost for researchers who come from academic settings to continue their work in various fields of study: environment, disease, longevity and more. ROBUST AND INCLUSIVE Martinez-Kalinina, 32, who is of Russian-Cuban descent, takes pride in the fact that her work and the work being done inside the CIC shares a common thread of community betterment.
CONNECTING COMMUNITIES An upcoming project she’s working on is called Immigrant Powered. Businesses can sign up to receive an “Immigrant Powered” sticker to place in their shop, indicating it’s immigrant-owned, staffed, patronized or any broad definition of the term. “First, it’s for businesses to feel empowered about what that designation means,” MartinezKalinina said. “Second, it’s to tell the story of the very large impact that immigrants have in our country and our communities. Third, it’s to connect small-business owners to advocacy activities, to partner with businesses that choose to have a voice.” An immigrant herself — she was born in Cuba and raised in Mexico — Martinez-Kalinina said she can think of no bigger joy than connecting communities. That helps explain why she keeps biscotti in her car to give to homeless people at stoplights — and why she keeps a spreadsheet of what everyone she knows may want for the holidays. “I’m extremely passionate about my city,” she said of Miami. “That appears in many forms.” WORDS BY MICHELLE PAYER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

the movers CHANGING MIAMI’S LANDSCAPE Plaza Construction is currently in the final stages of 1000 Museum, a 50-story, 83-residence mixed-use site designed by Zaha Hadid, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect who passed away in 2016. Her immense vision demanded a collaborative effort from fellow architects, engineers, designers and contractors. “We worked on pre-construction for a solid year before breaking ground,” Meltzer said. Glass-fiber reinforced concrete panels made in Dubai were then brought to Miami to construct the building’s sensuous, fluid, undulating exoskeleton. The soaring structure will change Miami’s urban landscape. “I’m very excited for our clients and for us but especially for Miami to have such a great design,” he said.

It turned out to be a wise decision, one that helped shape a lifelong career as a builder. Meltzer joined the powerhouse firm Plaza Construction in 1989, spearheading its expansion into Florida. In January, he was named president of Plaza Construction Group Florida.
His portfolio of work ranges from commercial retail and mixed-use properties to luxury residences and hotels, including the W South Beach, Marquis Miami, TownCenter One at Dadeland, Credit Suisse Private Banking in Miami, Union Bank of Switzerland in San Francisco, and the new 1000 Museum Tower downtown.
IN SERVICE OF CHILDREN Meltzer and his wife, Suzanne, a Coconut Grove native, together raised three sons: Noah, Zach and Ryan. Giving back to the community is essential, Meltzer said. He serves on the board of the Associated General Contractors of America, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Tulane School of Architecture, the Miami Beach JCC and Voices for Children Foundation. The latter has a special place in his heart. “I wanted to find a local charity to contribute,” he said. Friends led him to Voices for Children, an organization committed to protecting abused and neglected kids. Voices for Children has been the recipient of Plaza Construction’s annual Golf Invitational fundraiser since 2015; the latest event brought in about $300,000. He and Suzanne chair the organization’s gala, and Plaza Construction’s staff is involved as well. Despite a busy schedule, Meltzer said he tries “to keep Saturday mornings free of telephone and business talks.” He also sets aside time to coach 11-year-old Ryan’s basketball team. And while his phone and reading glasses are necessary tools in his life, Meltzer said, “What I need to have with me at all times is my family.” WORDS BY MARCIA MORGADO / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

inda Cheung hadn’t traveled internationally much before she started her career. The 31-year-old social entrepreneur and founder of a climate-action prototyping lab called Before It’s Too Late had grown up cycling in and out of poverty, moving from New York to California to the Midwest. Cheung’s father had owned restaurants, but his passion for computer programming, technology and entrepreneurship led him to start a small software business. “I adopted his personality,” Cheung said. Studying business at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania presented an opportunity for Cheung to travel to Guatemala. “It was my first time leaving the country,” she said. “I was living at an orphanage and seeing these kids who had such small worlds and small lives. It really opened up my mind to how people around the world live.”
FINDING HER CAUSE Understanding other cultures became an integral part of Cheung’s early career and research. She decided to go back to business school, this time choosing MIT. “I wanted to dedicate my life to a real cause,” Cheung said, “and by spending a lot of time traveling and getting to know other cultures, I realized that climate change was my cause.” A self-proclaimed “systems-based thinker,” Cheung believed that climate change was the social issue that we were running out of time to solve. Her research at MIT led her to an internship at NextEra Energy, the Florida-based company whose subsidiaries include Florida Power & Light. The experience left Cheung aware that she needed to take a grassroots approach to effect real change. Before It’s Too Late is an organization dedicated to spreading awareness of and finding solutions to climate change through art and technology. Cheung is applying innovative storytelling techniques to engage and galvanize local support. “We’re not putting the pressure on our elected officials, and all these different people are confusing us,” she said. “I’m intrigued by the power of art and storytelling and narrative-building, because no matter how rational and intelligent we are, we are very emotional creatures.”

SMALL ACTIONS, BIG IMPACT Before It’s Too Late uses virtual and augmented reality and Miami artists to educate and inspire people to get involved in their local governments. The Miami Murals project, for example, brought together local artists and technologists to design climate-focused murals that would come to life when viewed through a smartphone. The Miami Hacks Climate Change Hackathon had artists, coders and designers tell stories about climate change, highlighting the people, neighborhoods and environments currently being affected. Like any new nonprofit, Before It’s Too Late’s greatest challenges lie in fundraising. But Cheung’s long-term vision is to develop an augmented reality app that leads users to art and inspires them to take small actions to combat climate change. “Not only is it a beautiful artistic project, but you’ll also be using the app to convert and measure real actions,” she said. “The whole idea, “Cheung added,” is that we can prove our collective power to combat climate change is worth something.” WORDS BY NICOLE MARTINEZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA / ARTWORK BY JOSE SALAICEZ

The League's extensive network of volunteers make it possible to provide quality medical care while keeping operating expenses low. Also, volunteers from Palm Beach to South Miami-Dade County help the organization’s on-going fundraising efforts throughout the year. The main fundraiser, the Telethon, yielded an approximate amount of $5,291,276 in pledges in 2018 to support the indigent and uninsured cancer patients in Florida.
For the last 20 years, our annual Liga Contra el Cancer telethon has raised more than $75 million dollars. Jorge H. Carballo, President and General Manager, Telemundo 51.
And it’s not just about money. The love and support that Liga Contra el Cáncer volunteers and doctors provide to patients is inspirational and goes a long way toward the emotional health of the patients who are facing the challenges of this devastating illness. It is very gratifying for me personally to partner with the outstanding Liga Contra el Cáncer family.

She estimated that she’s used her oven twice in the past year. And when she goes out to dinner, she skips dessert. The spry 24-year-old never thought she’d be a pastry chef.

Wynne will debut her new desserts at Ford’s next restaurant, a-fisho-na-do, opening next year. Her best tip for holiday eating: “Close your eyes, and then everything is healthy!” stubbornseed.com.
ANDREW BALICK Tap 42 Andrew Balick can definitely take the heat in the kitchen. He’s worked for two of the world’s swankiest hospitality brands, Mandarin Oriental and The Ritz-Carlton. But it was his first cooking gig at a dingy college sports bar in Gainesville that ignited his passion for the culinary industry. The 36-year-old corporate chef and partner at Tap 42 is debuting
Bar Rita in Fort Lauderdale next month. To say it’s highly anticipated is an understatement. The MexicanAmerican rooftop concept has been “coming soon” since 2013. Lox, Stock and Bagel Matteson Koche is rolling the city’s most in-demand dough at his roving El Bagel pop-up. WORDS BY CHARLIE CRESPO / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS
H
ow good are the bagel sandwiches Matteson Koche sells from his El Bagel food truck? Put it this way: People will wait in line outside during Miami downpours just to get their hands on one before Koche runs out, which usually happens less than two hours after he opens for the day. “There hasn’t been someone who has made a bagel of this quality because a lot of people are focused on [making] money,” said Koche, 27. “We focus on the bagel.” He achieves this high standard of quality by eschewing certain practices that are commonplace in making mass-produced bagels. He uses wild yeast instead of the commercially manufactured kind. He hand-rolls his bagels rather than using a machine. And he allows his bagels to undergo a slow, 48-hour fermentation before baking them. All of this effort creates bagels with a crisp exterior and an interior that elegantly walks the line between dense and airy. It’s the Goldilocks (Goldilox?) of bagels: just right. LOCAL FLAVOR Although Koche’s dough is a delight on its own, it’s his bagel sandwiches that elevate the experience. He takes his childhood nostalgia of eating in classic Jewish delis and combines that with the local flair of Miami products and flavors.

“I don’t like the idea of replicating a New York deli,” he said. “We’re in Miami. Let’s make it new. I want to work with local people and local produce.” With that in mind, you’ll find sandwiches like the King Guava, a take on the Cuban pastelito that layers local Redland guava, cream cheese, a fried egg and potato sticks. Ask nicely and he might make you the off-menu El Bagel Original: roasted jalapeño peppers, scallion cream cheese and thick-cut bacon from Proper Sausages. EL BAGEL EN CASA While reluctant to reveal his proprietary — and very involved — bagel recipe, Koche did share two of his favorite bagel pairings: gravlax and vegetable cream cheese. “My mom always used to make gravlax for brunch at home,” he said. “It’s a simple recipe that tastes really good. You want a sharp knife to slice it as thin as possible.” As for the vegetable cream cheese, he likes it for its flexibility — any vegetables that you pick up at a farmers market or that you find in your refrigerator will do. GRAVLAX
MAKES 6-8 SERVINGS
INGREDIENTS 2-3 pounds Atlantic salmon (whole filet, center cut) 1 cup organic cane sugar
1 cup kosher salt 1-2 bunches dill Lemon slices
1. Trim off the skin. Pat salmon dry and place on plastic wrap (do not cut plastic wrap at this point). 2. Mix sugar and salt. Coat salmon on both sides, covering completely. Cover top side with dill sprigs and lemon slices. 3. Wrap salmon tightly several times with plastic wrap, leaving one end open. Place salmon on a sheet pan and put in the refrigerator. Put a plate or another sheet pan on top of the salmon, weighing it down with heavy cans. Refrigerate for 36-48 hours, flipping fish and draining liquid halfway through. 4. Remove plastic wrap and wash fish with cold water, then pat dry. Slice as thinly as possible across the top of the fish using a sharp knife.
VEGETABLE CREAM CHEESE MAKES 6-8 SERVINGS
INGREDIENTS 2 pounds plain cream cheese 1 large red onion 6 garlic cloves 1 bunch scallions 2-3 red bell peppers
2-3 other peppers (jalapeño, serrano, poblano, etc.) Any other vegetables or herbs as desired Chile powder Hot sauce
1. Chop all vegetables and arrange on an aluminum foil-lined sheet pan. Lightly drizzle with olive oil and salt. 2. Broil on high for 5-10 minutes, until vegetables begin to char. Remove from oven and let cool. 3. In a stand mixer, combine vegetables and cream cheese on high for 1-2 minutes. Add chile powder and/or hot sauce to taste.
El Bagel owner Matteson Koche, opposite page, specializes in bagels with crisp exteriors and perfectly airy interiors. He likes to top his split bagels with homemade gravlax and local cream cheese.

HOLIDAY MIRACLES
Five perfect bottles of wine to gift or to have on your dinner table this winter.
A
as a sommelier and owner of a wine bar, every holiday season people ask me: What pairs best with holiday food? My answer is, “Really big bottles.” People think I say this because wine ages better in large-format bottles. But it’s actually because there’s a lot more wine in those big bottles, and if you’ve ever been around my family, you’d understand
70
INDULGE | NOVEMBER 2018 | miamiindulge.com
why that’s a necessity. Joking aside, here are five wines that make excellent gifts — and outstanding food pairings — during the holidays:
BUBBLES! Sparkling wine is the quintessential holiday thirst-quencher. I never say no to Champagne, but there are killer bottles on the same level as the French, at far better values.
A favorite — only produced in large-format bottles — is Joy 2004 ($200) by Iron Horse Vineyards in Sonoma. It’s made in the same style as Champagne and aged 12-15 years before release. Scintillatingly fresh, with flavors of fresh-baked biscuits and Granny Smith apples, Joy is the perfect way to prepare for family. Around the holidays, we could all use a little more Joy!
GEWÜRZTRAMINER! We need something that works well with pineapple and clove-studded ham or a whole pig. This is one time in your life you actually seek out gewürztraminer. In German, gewurz means spicy (not hot-spicy, but like cooking spices) and traminer is the grape. It works incredibly well with these holiday faves. Maurice Schoech Gewürztraminer 2016 ($26) from Alsace, France, has ginger and clove aromas with hints of banana bread and starfruit and is slightly sweet in all the right ways. The real party starts when the clove flavors in the wine dance with the clove and pineapple in the piggy. The sweetness of the wine with the saltiness of the roast pork is yin and yang magic.

the life For holiday food-and-wine pairings, try Hidden Bench Pinot Noir with turkey, Qupé Syrah with prime rib and Broadbent Madeira with pumpkin pie.
PINOT NOIR! At Thanksgiving, everyone wants pinot noir with their turkey. Me? I’m just happy if the bird’s not dry. We should give our neighbors to the north some love: Oh, Canada — it’s not just an anthem. Hidden Bench Pinot Noir 2016 ($32) from Beamsville Bench, Canada, comes from the Niagara Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Ontario. The cooler weather works well for pinot noir as that grape is a prima donna and doesn’t like to get too hot. Redolent of crushed cranberries, oolong tea and morning rain on the yard, the wine is light, svelte and vivacious — just like J Lo!
SYRAH! At Christmas, we dig prime rib for that juicy, carnivorous love, but it’s the marbling of fat that brings us back for more. Fat needs something to offset it, and since you’re not inviting Jenny Craig to dinner, you need red wine. Syrah, with the body weight of some cabernets and the silky splendor of pinot, parties with everything on the holiday table. Qupé Syrah 2016 ($23) from California’s Central Coast boasts black pepper, menthol and smokedmeat qualities. It’s sort of like hanging out near your abuelo’s Caja China.
MADEIRA! Craving something sweet with your pecan or pumpkin pie? Get into a bottle of madeira and realize Disney isn’t the only one making dreams come true. Broadbent 10-Year Boal Madeira ($45) — do not cheap out and get madeira intended for cooking — comes from the island of Madeira off the coast of Africa. Its fresh, bright acidity and nutty, caramel flavors dance with holiday sweets like Pitbull on New Year’s Eve. Madeira is love in a bottle! WORDS BY HEATH PORTER

CORAL WAY
Don’t dismiss Coral Way — aka Southwest 22nd Street — as just a pass-through between Coral Gables and Brickell. It’s a path that demands attention, dotted with family-owned businesses and residential pockets that have a sense of place. Its main artery’s lush trees create a tunnel of shade, and the stipules dance in the wind as Miamians zoom by. Slow down and pull over, and you’re bound to discover local flavors at places like longtime favorite Maria’s Greek Restaurant or relaxed gastropub The Mighty. Young families, meanwhile, are flocking to the quiet micro-neighborhoods that jut out to the north and south of Coral Way, like Coral Gate, Shenandoah and Silver Bluff. Meet our guides
Brothers Michael and Andrew Mendez are the owners and operators of Mendez Fuel, a gas station at the northwest corner of Coral Way and 32nd Avenue. “Gas station” doesn’t really do it justice. The Mendez brothers were on the front line of Miami’s craft beer revolution, with taps that pour draft beer to go and a bottle-and-can selection that’s among the best in town. Fresh juices, probiotic kombucha, cinnamon-avocado toast, Vietnamese sandwiches, vegetarian burritos and gourmet popcorn are just some of the options that make Mendez Fuel so much more than a place to fill up your car’s gas tank. Catch them behind the counter, and count on them to know the very best of what Coral Way has to offer.

SLOW Open again after a post-Hurricane Irma renovation, Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada is an easy drive from Miami but feels like a world away.
The 214-room Cheeca Lodge & Spa is spread out over 27 acres and includes a private beach, a chip-andputt golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, six tennis courts and a newly rebuilt fishing pier. Below, step into island time with drinks like the Akeyi Punch.
T
he first clue that our weekend at the newly remodeled Cheeca Lodge & Spa would be a relaxing one was when a late-summer sun shower washed over the resort during an early morning yoga session. The rain prompted our six-person class to move from the coarse sand of the beach to the smooth carpet of a second-floor conference room. The instructor opened the room’s broad patio doors. We inhaled the fresh air and felt its warmth on our bodies. We could see the water and hear its waves lapping against the sand. Our flow remained uninterrupted as we worked through our poses and as the shower gave way to pure sunshine. In paradise, a little rain isn’t going to ruin anyone’s good time. BACK AFTER THE STORM Islamorada, like much of the Florida Keys, endured a lashing from Hurricane Irma last year. The storm forced Cheeca Lodge to close for six months, during which the owners poured $25 million into renovating everything from landscaping to guest rooms to dining venues.

The result is a refreshed, modern feel throughout the property that encapsulates the unrushed-yetrefined vibe of the Keys’ best resorts. After yoga, my wife and I took our 7-month-old for a stroll onto Cheeca’s completely rebuilt pier. I rented one of the hotel’s complimentary fishing rods — also brand new — and lazily dangled some bait shrimp over the edge, feeding a school of small snapper that swam underneath the dock. FRESH FISH AND MORE I didn’t catch anything worth keeping, but executive chef Phillip
Lowd works with actual fishermen every day to keep Cheeca’s on-site restaurants stocked with the freshest local fish and seafood. You don’t have to be a pescatarian to enjoy Cheeca’s fare, but it’s hard to be in the sportfishing capital of the world and not try the fresh fish. We wanted seconds of the spinach and crab toast that Lowd serves at Atlantic’s Edge, the resort’s signature restaurant. A brightly acidic lemon foam, crunchy radish coins and sweet pearls of passion fruit balanced all the flavors and textures of the toast, keeping the last bite as intriguing as the first.

At Nikai, Cheeca’s Japaneseinspired restaurant, local wahoo gets the tataki treatment as an appetizer — lightly seared and dotted with cilantro oil and a yuzu-ponzu sauce. The fish’s firm white meat also finds its way into a playful roll called the Keysey Japanesey, accompanied by a Key lime glaze and toasted coconut flakes. At the family-friendly pool, the resort’s new Tiki Bar tempts you with an over-the-top lobster grilled cheese on thick-cut sourdough bread that oozes with brie. For something a little more restrained and on the lighter side, mahi tacos have just the right amount of zip from shredded radicchio and sweetness from mango salsa.
also are six pristine tennis courts, for which Cheeca provides guests free racquets and balls. An outdoor spa tub on our balcony provided a perfect perch to soak away the day’s activities over a cool glass of sauvignon blanc. Despite the resort’s size — there are 214 guest rooms spread over 27 acres — by Day Two the attentive staff was greeting us by name. When it was time to check out, we didn’t even have to hand the valet our parking ticket; our car was ready and packed for us by the time we stepped outside. A six-month closure is long enough to knock some resorts down for the count. For Cheeca, it took the time off to get back up and return stronger than ever. WORDS BY EVAN S. Off the Grid Explore the beauty and adventure of Alaska from a cruise around the last frontier.
J
ust thinking about summertime in Miami is enough to make any local break into a sweat. As you consider plans for next summer, put an Alaskan cruise at the top of your list. What I once considered a trip for the cardcarrying AARP crowd is actually a getaway that appeals to all generations. Even those who claim they “aren’t cruise people” should board a ship as it’s really the only way to see these remote but breathtakingly beautiful parts of our country.
We took the popular Inside Passage route, allowing a day for glacier viewing and stops in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria. JUNEAU Born from the gold rush of 1880, Alaska’s capital is home to some 30,000 people and receives nearly 1 million cruise visitors a year. Raring to go, we disembarked our ship for our most-anticipated excursion, a helicopter ride and hike on Mendenhall glacier, blissfully Princess Cruises is one of the only lines allowed access into Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park, above. Whale sightings, left, are so prevalent in Auke Bay between April and November that many touring companies guarantee them or your money back.
unaware of the high winds that would force its cancelation. Regrouping, we found ourselves on a whalewatching boat in Auke Bay, where hundreds of humpbacks and orcas feed from April to November, so prevalent that companies guarantee sightings or your money back. We weren’t even out of the harbor when the whales emerged, forcing the captain to cut the engine as we all peered through our camera lenses waiting to see where we’d spot them next. For a few hours, we were treated to the show these whales put on; I quickly reframed my notion that whale-watching cruises are boring. We also spied sea lions, seals and bald eagles. After grabbing a late lunch by the dock — enormous Alaskan king crab legs and freshoff-the-boat salmon — we checked in for whitewater rafting on Mendenhall River. Our guide maneuvered past floating icebergs to a five-mile stretch of Class III river (the rapids themselves are actually Class II but the trip is rated Class III because your body starts shutting down after 15 minutes in water so cold).

the life
When the guide explained that someone fell out the day before, my daughter looked down at her orange waterproof jumpsuit and held on a little bit tighter. Rafting in the Land of the Midnight Sun, we glimpsed bald eagles and beavers in the scenic valley. SKAGWAY Once at the heart of the gold rush, Skagway now has fewer than 1,000 residents. For my first-ever helicopter ride, I was comforted to learn the 20-something behind the controls got his pilot’s license before learning how to drive, a common refrain in Alaska. Not only
did the flight offer the most stunning scenery, but a headphone/mic system allowed my 7-year-old to get answers to all of her questions: “Why is the ice blue? Why doesn’t the snow melt over the summer? How do the glaciers get their names?”
Upon landing on Mead Glacier, we got a quick safety briefing and walking poles. I held onto my daughters’ coats as they peered into crevices and munched on glacier ice, throwing some into the holes to listen and guess the depth. Guides showed us how to do planks over narrow streams and sip glacial water. That afternoon, a 4x4 Unimog carried us up a rugged mountain road to a training camp for furry athletes who compete in the Iditarod and Yukon Quest. We cuddled week-old puppies and boarded a summertime sled for a mile-long trail ride in the Tongass National Forest. We sat around a campfire with Denver, a 19-year-old wildlife biology major at the University of Alaska Fairbanks who, along with her 22 dogs, is in the process of qualifying for Iditarod 2025. KETCHIKAN Known as the Salmon Capital of the World, Ketchikan is perfect for viewing the salmon run. After two action-packed port days, we opted for nearby souvenir shopping and a lumberjack show where athletes competed in springboard chopping, buck sawing, axe throwing and log rolling.
Clockwise from top: Rafting in Mendenhall River provides glimpses of eagles, beavers and other wildlife; visiting future Iditarod competitors in Skagway; a lumberjack show in Ketchikan.

the life Helicopters are a necessary form of transportation — and sightseeing — in Alaska, where many pilots get their flying license before learning to drive. Crab legs and other fresh seafood are staples in this part of the country. The Seattle skyline, bottom, beckons cruise travelers as they make their way back to their home cities.
GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK Catch the calving glaciers while you still can as National Park Rangers board the ship to narrate. You’ll hear thunderous roars as colossal chunks of ice drop from Margerie Glacier into the sea. You’ll grab your binoculars and camera as word spreads on deck that a moose — yes, a moose — is crossing the waters in front of the boat. You’ll gasp at the sight of harbor seals and mountain goats, then head for the hot chocolate station, a reminder that you have not actually entered the Ice Age. We chose Princess because it’s one of the only cruise lines allowed in Glacier Bay National Park. They say the other glaciers are just as

spectacular, but my kids got their coveted stamps in the National Park Passport Book for one that not many people cross off their list! VICTORIA The oldest city in the Pacific Northwest, Victoria is most known for Butchart Gardens, a 55-acre floral wonderland. If the week of exploring the final frontier leaves you exhausted but still longing for nature’s beauty, relax at Butchart Gardens, meandering through the themed gardens, over the footbridges and alongside refreshing fountains and ornate statues. Around every corner, there’s a new sight to behold.
SEATTLE This port city caters to cruise passengers and offers plenty to keep busy until the red-eye return. Seattle so badly wants its cruise passengers to spend the day as tourists that it transports bags complimentary from the cruise terminal to the airport. But if you miss the flyer in your stateroom like we did, don’t panic. Just book BAGBNB, a luggage-storage service that takes care of the awkward what-to-do-with-yoursuitcase problem. We piggybacked on the week’s fish theme and went to see the flying variety at Pike Place Market, then waited in line for close to an hour at the first-ever Starbucks. Next stop was a trip up the Space Needle and a walk through Chihuly Garden and Glass. Officially back on the grid, it seemed fitting to end such a gorgeous week with man-made marvels before catching the long flight home. ew Orleans may fly under Old Glory, but it might as well be its own country for the rich history, culture and cuisine in which it is steeped. Originally founded by the French in 1718 and named after the Duke of Orleans, this strategic port city hopped between French and Spanish ownership until falling into American hands courtesy of Napoleon. Jazz was born here, as was America’s first cocktail, the Sazerac. Voodoo grew strong, and a penchant for living the good life in all its excess became the identity of the city till this very day. Most visitors know New Orleans for its celebrated stops like Commander’s Palace and the prerequisite beignets and chicory-infused coffee at Café du Monde. But for those seeking to explore the city’s culinary prowess a bit off the tourist path, INDULGE has you set.

“For the same price as sending a floral arrangement that won’t last, you can give a fruit tree. Action Sod is my go-to nursery. I recently bought some beautiful kumquat trees there. They bring you around the property in a golf cart, and you can choose from a huge variety of plants.” actionsod.com.

f we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.” So said Mahatma Gandhi, the peaceful activist who labored for India’s independence. In Hindu symbolism, Durga, the warrior goddess who fights for justice, is depicted astride a tiger. The imagery represents royalty, fearlessness and strength. Painted by hand on porcelain, the majestic tiger on Hermès’ Tigre Royal Change Tray has a regal, noble and dignified posture. The tray can serve as a daily reminder that changes, however small, have enduring effects. Even the spare coins in our pockets can go toward causes that fight ignorance, cruelty and violence. In life there may always be conflict and suffering, but each of us can strive to change ourselves and the world around us. $1,975.
