enim-preferred. Black-tie invited. Backyard chic. Snappy casual. Business relaxed. Party invitations I’ve received lately are either getting incredibly specific or increasingly vague in dress codes, depending on how you look at it. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about fashion in my time at INDULGE, it’s that clothing is about personal expression and creativity, not brands and labels. In a place as culturally and socially diverse as Miami, we have a daily front-row seat at everyone’s personal runway show. It’s a mix of careful curation and anything-goes that so many of you manage to wear so well. We try to emulate that balance in our annual Fashion Issue. First, on the haute side, we partnered with Miami City Ballet for our cover feature, dressing several of the company’s preeminent dancers in the latest fall looks from Naeem Khan, Oscar de la Renta, Angel Sanchez and other top design houses. We accented the outfits with literally millions of dollars of jewelry from Orianne Collins and Tiffany & Co. to complete our Fashion en Pointe spread that begins Evan S. Benn on page 86. Editor in Chief To show Miami’s other fashion side — the clothing we wear to brunch on the beach, to go shopping in Wynwood, to meet friends for a drink — we took the Bill Cunningham approach to street photography: going around town with a camera on our neck and notepad in our hands (p. 98). The fashion thread runs throughout this issue, from the media pro who rocks the same brand of Hawaiian shirt every single day (Fashionisto, p. 50) to the CEOs who run an eco-friendly footwear company (Sandal Star, p. 48) and an innovative line of lensless eyewear (Entrepreneurs, p. 54). Men’s fashion, women’s fashion, it’s all here — right down to the daring, unisex Prada jackets that close out the magazine (Indulgence, p. 106). Jeans or tux. Little black dress or long flowing gown. Remember that dress codes are nothing more than an invitation to express yourself, flash your creativity and show the world what style means to you.

hat are you going to wear?” I’ve heard those words for as long as I can remember, from the time I was 6 right up until my ripe old age of… well, you get the point: This eternal fashion question never goes out of style. Early on, we ask it in an effort to belong, to blend in. I never wanted to be the girl in a flouncy white eyelet dress while my friends proudly paraded their Z. Cavaricci jeans. OK, I think I just dated myself! Today, fashion is part inspiration, part imagination, and completely your own. This fusion is artfully expressed in our cover story by contributing stylist Elysze Held and photographer Nick Garcia, who capture Miami City Ballet dancers in page after page of stunning looks. The cover shot, which now ranks as one of my all-time INDULGE favorites, is like a personal trend board with a “mad about plaid” focus, bursting with unexpected colors and embellishments. A sense of revival ushers in each new fashion season, and this fall’s style renaissance is all about the ’80s. Tune into style editor Claudia Miyar’s throwback frequency in Lesley DeCanio The Local (p. 20), as she curates sparkly chandelier earrings, an autumn-hued sequined dress and a couture boombox clutch — really. We love sharing shopping experiences that sweep you off your feet. Think lifestyle rather than retail at the charming Mrs. Mandolin in the Design District (Source, p. 40). Its Aegean-inspired vibe surrounds you from the moment you step in. Browse this lovingly curated store, filled with artisanal home furnishings and apparel, or pause for a delectable Greek pastry and Per’La coffee. You’ll walk out with a unique treasure or a tasty treat — as well as a big smile. Want another reason to smile? Check into the new SLS Lux Brickell for a posh Staycation (p. 74). It’s an ideal base to rediscover Brickell, the focus of our Neighborhood column (p. 70). We asked Ramona Messore, VP and General Manager of Saks at Brickell City Centre, to be our local guide to these booming blocks, and her picks are perfect. I’ll add one more: the corner sofa that faces east at the SLS Lux’s Secret Garden — my favorite spot. In Dish (p. 57), we deliver 20 delicious brunch spots to savor. Request an outdoor table at Amara, pairing its breathtaking Biscayne Bay views with warm yuca cheese puffs. Or lounge on Quinto la Huella’s patio with an order of unlimited rosé. Wear whatever makes you comfortable. Remember, the ’80s are calling, and these brunch picks will encourage you to find those stretchy waistbands! Don’t forget to explore one of Miami’s top hotel bars — we’ve got six to recommend in Pour (p. 66). I especially like the Commodore Club at The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, a sophisticated lounge where you can sink into a leather sofa and soak in the richness. And, oh yeah, the cocktails rock. There’s a lot going on in Miami this fall, and plenty of places you don’t want to miss. What are you going to wear for all this fabulousness? Whether you choose something inspired by our Fashion Issue, or go with a closet classic, we hope you let your personal style shine as brightly as our amazing city.

Fresh Scent In the Middle East, a fine fragrance gets all the respect of rare jewelry, with a unique scent creating a personal calling card. Master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud took inspiration from the Middle East’s culture of perfume for Ombre Nomade, the first unisex scent from Louis Vuitton. Made from oud, the wood from a tree native to Southeast Asia, Ombre Nomade is imbued with an animalistic mustiness for a rare and refined aroma. Available at LV’s Aventura and Miami Design District boutiques from $330. us.louisvuitton.com.

Inspired by Cleopatra Mathematician, mother, medical scholar and ruler of an empire, it would be difficult to find a stronger inspiration for female empowerment than Cleopatra. Which is why Miami-bred fashion designer Lia Fernandez used the Egyptian pharaoh as a starting point for her new sunglass company, Ms. Eyecon. Fernandez launched the brand this summer with an inaugural collection called Cleo, the first of several lines inspired by female trailblazers. The Cleo shades have a classic throwback rounded frame, with a “third eye” design in the center, evocative of Cleopatra-era tiaras. Some frames are embossed with 24-karat gold, perfect for your next conquest. mseyecon.com.

THE DIRECTOR

As a child obsessed with ballet, Tania Castroverde Moskalenko learned to dance from fellow Cuban refugees after she arrived in Miami on a Freedom Flight in . Her career in the performing arts led her to top front-office jobs at theaters in Illinois, Indiana and Tennessee. And now she’s returned home to be Executive Director of Miami City Ballet. “When I left, I believed it was temporary,” Castroverde Moskalenko said. “It took me a long time to make it back.” She joins Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez at the ballet, the world’s only dance company to be led by two Cuban American women. Castroverde Moskalenko will keep the company financially sound while Lopez oversees the artistic side. “I love and I’m really passionate about the work I do,” Castroverde Moskalenko said. “The strength of finance is what keeps the ballet going.” Miami City Ballet opens its 8-’ season on October with two George Balanchine masterpieces — Concerto Barocco and Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. — as well as audience favorite Company B. miamicityballet.org.

GLOWING REVIEWS When Myriam Zaoui (pictured, above left) — the Parisian cofounder of The Art of Shaving — moved to Miami, she found a new dermatologist: Dr. Loretta Ciraldo (above right). Once she discovered Ciraldo’s genius, she also discovered her next project. Dr. Loretta Skincare (drloretta.com) merges Zaoui’s mastery of essential oils and aromatherapy with Ciraldo’s cuttingedge scientific knowledge. Each multitasking treatment is loaded with medical-grade ingredients and therapeutic oils. Meanwhile, special light-screening agents protect skin against visible aging. “New research shows that aging isn’t all about UVA and UVB damage,” Ciraldo said. “We also have to think about computer light, indoor pollution, climate conditions and other irritants.” A star of the regimen is a powerful retinol serum that boosts the natural repair process, leaving skin smoother, fresher and firmer. Zaoui, a born tastemaker, oversaw the delicately graphic, blush-pink packaging. Next up: a broadspectrum sunscreen. Count us in.

As a springboard diver at the University of Miami, Doris Glenn Richards trained twice a day, won three national championships — and developed a serious aversion to damp workout clothes. Then, it hit her: “What if there was a fast way to put on fresh underwear without having to change out of my leggings?” This is where Sexy Sweaties (sexysweaties.com) comes in. The product of Richards’ original vision, these exquisite, semi-sheer panties feature a gusset that attaches with two snaps, so you can swap in a clean, dry one in seconds or go insta-commando. They’re perfect for active and stylish people like Richards, a young mom who finds time to get to the gym.“It’s hard for me to go to sleep at night because I’m so excited about the workout I’m going to do in the morning,” she said. the local SOURCE The new Design District lifestyle boutique from Anastasia Koutsioukis is as mystically transportive as her beloved Aegean bistro.

W

hen Mandolin Aegean Bistro popped onto the Miami restaurant scene nine years ago, its charming outdoor garden café was a welcome addition to what was then an up-and-coming Design District. The food was — and still is — consistently incredible, and the hospitality made Mandolin shine even brighter. The restaurant has a way of transporting you to the Aegean Sea, with Moroccan-style glasses filled with crisp rosé and blue-on-white plates holding shareable, crave-worthy dishes. The hosts — Ahmet Erkaya and Anastasia Koutsioukis, New York transplants whose passion for fine dining is matched only by their love for each other and their family — have a knack for making diners feel as though they are guests in the couple’s home. While Erkaya ran the kitchen, Koutsioukis managed the front of house, documenting snaps of the restaurant’s leisurely sophistication on her Instagram account, @mrsmandolin. Fast-forward nearly a decade later: Mandolin is thriving among the ramped-up luxury of the Design District, and Koutsioukis has embarked on her next big project.

Here’s TO YOU, MRS. MANDOLIN

CONCEPT STORE AND CAFÉ Having made its grand opening this summer, Mrs. Mandolin — a concept store and café peddling specialty coffee and Greek pastries, household wares, and garments embodying the Aegean spirit — was a logical progression for Koutsioukis. A perennial entertainer with a penchant for travel, she imagined Mrs. Mandolin as more of a lifestyle boutique than a retail store. “Mandolin truly is our life and it’s our style,” Koutsioukis said. “The Aegean is a special place to us. Those artisan treasures that we find and that end up in our home are the conversation pieces that tell the story of our lives.” Part beach house, part souk, Mrs. Mandolin is a treasure chest filled with Koutsioukis’ dearest findings. The majority of housewares were sourced during her travels throughout Greece, Turkey and Morocco. Vintage Anatolian handcarved wooden cutting boards, for example — with some dating to the 19th century — are priced around $350 and work just as well for food prep as they do as serving pieces. Turkish towels, Moroccan pillowcases and throws, and sea-foam Moroccan glassware range from about $12 to $65. MADE WITH LOVE An array of Koutsioukis’ fashion-designer friends have pieces lining the space, from airy kaftans and Grecian sandals to delicate baubles and swimwear. Garments from celebrated brands like Loup Charmant and Carolina K transition seamlessly from pool-lounging to bar-hopping. “I really want our retail offerings to be less about the piece and more about the woman,” said Koutsioukis, whose own aesthetic includes breezy tunics and dainty jewelry. She’s also focused on carrying emerging as well as established local jewelers. A pair of brightly colored, abstractly geometric earrings by Miami newcomer Pili Restrepo are sure to make a statement, while Miansai’s classic gold cuffs are simple yet attention-grabbing. Careful to blend high-end and low-priced pieces with vintage goods and luxurious scented bath treats, Mrs. Mandolin is a thoughtfully curated market emulating the blissful ease of the Mediterranean coast. An extension of Koutsioukis’ personal brand and life, Mrs. Mandolin is like a window into her festive, inspired heart. “Everything here,” she said, “is made with love.” WORDS BY NICOLE MARTINEZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

Anastasia Koutsioukis, top, stocks her new Mrs. Mandolin store with pieces from her fashion-designer friends. “I want our offerings to be less about the piece and more about the woman,” she says.

Part beach house, part souk, Mrs. Mandolin features a nook that serves specialty coffee and Greek pastries as well as displays of goods that owner Anastasia Koutsioukis and her husband source from their trips around the world. Vintage cutting boards find a home next to hand-painted pottery, while local and internationally known fashion brands for women live in symbiosis.

VITALS 45. Born in Spain and raised in Miami, Eva Hughes is a fashion and media expert who rose to the top of the publishing world. After a four-year stint as editor of Miami-based Selecta magazine, Hughes’ editorial career catapulted into the big leagues when, in 2002, Condé Nast tapped her as editor in chief of Vogue Latin America, then based in Brickell. In 2012 she moved to Mexico City and became CEO of Condé Nast Mexico and Latin America. The impeccably mannered young woman with a soft Spanish accent and bright smile traveled the world, navigating multimillion-dollar decisions and transforming titles like Vogue, Glamour, GQ and AD into digital media powerhouses. She left Condé Nast and Mexico last year to return to Miami, where her new business model includes running her own consulting firm, Adira; hosting a weekly podcast, Eva Talks; and leading public speaking engagements. Miami’s Italian fashion school, Istituto Marangoni, recently recruited her to join its advisory board. THE MAGAZINE GRIND “It wasn’t a Disney tour. I learned through hard work: You fall, get up and try again. For 20 years it was nonstop, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., weekends included.” MORE WITH LESS “Once we did a 600-page Vogue book [Mexico and Latin America] plus a Vogue Hair supplement, plus Vogue Man, with two art people in Miami, one in Mexico and two local writers. It was grueling.” LESSON LEARNED “Have empathy on yourself. I was very hard on myself and, as a consequence, others.”

family-oriented, all about unity and values. The name Adira called my attention: noble, feminine, strong — unique and incredible characteristics. I like that it’s powerful, but in the sense of having the power to transform, create change, do new things, make a difference.” PODCASTING FROM HOME “I structure my podcasts using my CEO training: I research and contact guests, write intros and questions, tape the podcast, then add music afterward. All from here, at home, with a microphone and computer.” FASHIONABLE PROGRAMMING “Istituto Marangoni is a fabulous project. I’m programming the new Conversations With… series — securing high-caliber guests within an educational context. The goal is to turn Miami into a fashion hub and offer Latin America a fashion school that’s closer than New York or Europe.” GREATEST INFLUENCE “My mother. I was 13 when she was diagnosed with leukemia and thought she was going to die. She told us, ‘All I ask is that whatever you do, you’ll do it with passion, integrity, dignity… and be the best.’” ECO-FRIENDLY FASHION ADVICE “I’m more conscious now about the environment when I make a purchase. There is no problem in repeating outfits. I mean, how many white T-shirts and pairs of jeans do you really need?” ALWAYS AT HAND “My phone! And my reading glasses.”

CONSULTING WITH A TWIST “I created Adira Consulting under very broad terms, but it’s focused on fashion, retail, education and commerce. I want to do projects where I engage and learn.”

HAPPINESS IS… “Finding a balance between being a go-getter and having more of a private life.”

Dr. Jaffus Hardrick Florida Memorial University’s new leader has ambitious goals — and plans to achieve them in style.

s the new president of Florida Memorial University, Dr. Jaffus Hardrick has set a challenging yet achievable target: triple student enrollment from its current level of about 1,200 undergraduates. How does the veteran educator plan to accomplish that in the coming years? A combination of partnerships with other schools like Florida International University, expanded online and certificate offerings, and a heavy push of FMU’s STEM programs. “Part of my goal is to build bridges from Florida Memorial University to the community, and vice versa,” he said, adding that he wants to “connect the university with other institutions of higher learning in our city.”

he did the same thing at Baylor University, where he worked as assistant provost for academic affairs and assistant vice president for human resources. “I think [being selected by FMU] was because of my impact and influence on the community and the institution,” Hardrick said. A native of Dothan, Alabama, near the Florida and Georgia borders, Hardrick earned a doctorate in higher education from Baylor, a master’s degree in education from Prairie View A&M

CREATING A LEGACY FMU, a historically black university that is celebrating its 50th year in Miami Gardens, tapped Hardrick to be its next leader over the summer. For the previous decade, he held dual roles at FIU: vice provost for student access and success, and vice president for human resources. He’s used to wearing multiple hats —

who didn’t meet college admission requirements to take college courses over the summer. If they did well, they could migrate into the regular academic semester at FIU. “These students are first-generation students from low economic backgrounds, and, because of the programs, they’re graduating in four years,” Hardrick said. DRESSING THE PART He knows how to use fashion to his advantage, too, favoring Armani suits and other sharp ensembles. “Everywhere I’ve worked, I’ve always raised the bar when it comes to fashion and for men to dress in a professional way,” he said. “I think when individuals dress the part, it does something for your image and it says something about the organization you represent.” Good luck to the student or colleague who hopes to catch him wearing clashing patterns. “I love casual as well, but I like to make sure I match. I don’t even go to Publix unless I’m dressed appropriately.” WORDS BY CAITLIN GRANFIELD / PORTRAIT BY FELIPE CUEVAS / PHOTOGRAPHED AT FLORIDA MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY

She’s dressed head to toe in gear from Carbon38, a women’s fashion/activewear site that Johnson says she’s addicted to. Who could blame her for wanting to be sportychic and comfortable when running her own professional and personal empires? ‘ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES’ She stepped into the CEO role in 2013, resurrecting Samba Sol from a dormant brand with basic designs — plain flip-flops with flag emblems from various countries — to one with vibrant and varied looks for women, men and children. More than that, Samba Sol has a message: Respect the planet. “I saw the endless possibilities of Samba Sol because of the sustainability factor,” Johnson said. All of the company’s sandals are made with biodegradable Brazilian rubber, and the manufacturing process has a low carbon … ahem … footprint. “It is all natural,” she said of her products. “There are no toxins. And we recycle and reuse all of our waste.”

A-LIST CELEBS AND PARTNERS The concept has caught on with celebs like Amy Adams, Ben Affleck and Natalie Portman, all of whom have been seen sporting Samba Sol flipflops. Brands love them, too. The Delano and Kimpton Angler’s in South Beach have worked with Samba Sol on custom collaborations for retail sale or as amenities for VIPs. A patron of the arts, Johnson recently partnered with the National YoungArts Foundation to have four alumni create designs for Samba Sol. Their sandals are now available for sale online, with proceeds going back to YoungArts and to the artists themselves. “Art and the art of fashion is such an important part of who we are at Samba Sol and an important part of who I am as a person,” Johnson said. “I knew from the beginning that our mission would be to help protect the Earth while also supporting the next generation of artists and entrepreneurs.” WORDS BY ERIN MICHELLE NEWBERG / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Chris Adamo

He’s a media professional on a hot streak: 650-plus days and counting wearing the same brand of Hawaiian shirt.

Y

ou will never lose Chris Adamo in a crowd. Not today, not tomorrow and not for the foreseeable future, because he is always wearing a bold Jams World Hawaiian shirt. Adamo has been wearing Jams shirts every single day for almost two years — more than 650 days and counting. The shirts, made from spun crushed rayon with hand-painted buttons, are typically bright with floral patterns. They retail for about $110 each, but Adamo scores many of his on eBay for much less than that. It’s hard to miss him. “I probably get stopped at least three to five times a day with people asking me about my shirt,” he said. “It immediately brings a smile to that person’s face. The colors really break down barriers between people to open conversations — so much so that the shirts have become my own social experiment and built-in ice breaker.” THINK LOCAL, ACT LOCAL Adamo is the Chief Business Officer for WhereBy.Us, the parent company of The New Tropic in Miami and similar digital media outlets in Orlando, Seattle and Portland, Oregon. His company is focused on driving community engagement at the hyper-local level. Adamo invests in Miami and other cities where WhereBy.Us has a presence with the same commitment he invests in his shirts. “It's a bit shocking, but I barely read the world news. It often paralyzes me due to the fact that I don't know where to begin to

create change,” he said. “Instead, when I read local news in the cities that I frequent, I am inspired to take action because I know my impact can be felt and seen in real time when I act locally.” Every day, Adamo reads local news from the four current WhereBy. Us outlets. The New Tropic was the first, started four years ago, and Adamo said expansion to more cities is in the works. Launching a local media brand in different cities requires him to travel often, but WhereBy.Us relies heavily on help from in-the-know locals. “We do a ton of interviews — in the hundreds,” Adamo said. “We interview people on the ground to get a feel of what they love and what they want. Then we hire locals.” A BETTER FIT IN MIAMI Miami is now home for Adamo, who fully embraces WhereBy.Us’ mantra of “live like you live here.” He moved here from New York in 2012 after Superstorm Sandy and married a Miamian the next year. His wife, Randi Wolfson, has been a major influence on his style, having given him his first Jams World shirt. Paying it forward, the shirts are now Adamo’s go-to gift for family, friends and acquaintances. He has no plans to end his continuous streak; in fact, he’d like to ramp it up and wear Jams World threads around the clock. “Maybe if Jams would take a stab at pajamas or workout gear,” he said, “I could really simplify things.” WORDS BY DORI ZINN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

ON FAMOUS FACES McDowell has used her creative approach and marketing know-how to get If Eye Ever frames on some noteworthy faces, including fashion author Constance White (How to Slay) and Beyoncé’s mom. “I was able to get a pair of custom-made frames on Tina Knowles Lawson, and we created one-of-a-kind pairs for her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange,” McDowell said. When it comes to wearing the frames, McDowell said it’s all about having the right combination of confidence, creativity and edginess. If Eye Ever comes in six shapes — with names like Eartha, Veep and Fly Girl — and many color combinations, so there’s a frame for every face and every outfit.

prints and bright, graphic designs — If Eye Ever adds a pop of pizzazz to any outfit, day or night. Marketing maven Suzan McDowell partnered with designer friend Glaja Mayne to create the brand, which they say offers an artistic approach to fashion. “I wanted to create a line of

‘face art,’ eyewear that could allow those who don’t need lenses or those who have contacts to enjoy our frames,” McDowell said. “As women from the African Diaspora, using fabulous Ankara fabrics to create the mosaic of each frame made us very happy.”

DRESS THEM UP OR DOWN “Each person’s face is unique, just like we are,” McDowell said. “Some of our customers say the orange-and-blue cat-eye bling can be rocked at night. And our grayon-gray and white pair — called 50 Shades — is perfect for a toneddown, everyday, classic-cool look.” Up next for McDowell and Mayne: developing If Eye Ever frames that can be fitted with prescription lenses, and expanding into a line for kids. “Little ones love glasses, but their eyes are young, so they usually don’t need lenses,” McDowell said. “But If Eye Ever is fun, and everybody has a face, so we would love to see it go global and make lots of faces happy, all over the world.” WORDS BY AURORA DOMINGUEZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

Jon Cardello develops the overall corporate strategy, business development and marketing of Stantec’s growing commercial sector practice in South Florida and throughout the U.S. Cardello’s planning and design expertise in high-profile residential, mixed-use, hospitality and workplace projects spans more than 20 years. Projects include Solitair Brickell, Luma at Miami Worldcenter, Eve at the District, Midtown 29, Midtown 8, Atelier and The RitzCarlton Residences, Miami Beach. Cardello and his team have also helped to reshape the famed Collins Avenue in Miami Beach with the restoration of seven historic Art Deco hotels. HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR APPROACH TO ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN? We start by looking at the quality of environment and people using the space, whether it’s for a living environment, workspace or a guest experience. From there, we develop an architectural vision that is informed by the community and context, and we balance that vision with the value of the asset. WHAT ARE SOME LUXURY AMENITIES THAT ARE POPULAR WITH SOUTH FLORIDA HOMEOWNERS TODAY? When it comes to luxury amenities, it’s important to start with the quality of services. Condominium owners are looking for unique experiences as well as spatial amenities. Concierge services, such as a private chef, pool/beach food and beverage service, collaborative workspaces and demonstration kitchens are very desirable amenities for condominium residents. IS THERE A PARTICULAR PROJECT THAT STANDS OUT AS AN EXAMPLE OF YOUR WORK? WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL? Solitair Brickell, a 50-story luxury rental residential community, represents many of the ideals that we focus on. The design was inspired by the Medjool date palm with its mesmerizing woven façade. The building makes a strong architectural statement while providing amenities such as a rooftop pool view, stylish lounges and collaborative workspaces. WHAT ARE SOME ADVANTAGES OF DESIGNING IN MIAMI? Miami allows us to really examine the concept of urban tropical living. The quality of light lets us to shape mass and patterns and create visual compositions. Miami is also a modern day melting pot of many cultural and ethnical influences that inspire not only architecture, but also furniture and fashion design.

MIAMI’S BEST

BRUNCHES

Twenty — count ’em, 20! — places to satisfy your weekend cravings for eggs, mimosas and more.

A

proper brunch is the meal we most look forward to during the work week. It’s our leisurely reward after mundane turkey-sandwich lunches and dinners delivered by Uber Eats. It’s also the one meal we don’t want to spend our precious weekend time fretting over, researching reviews and perusing menus online. We’ve taken the guesswork out of the equation by compiling 20 of our favorites, from big buffets to killer à la carte options. Bon appétit!

EDGE STEAK & BAR Brickell At the Four Seasons Miami, Edge’s over-the-top buffet will leave you full for at least a day. A charcuterie station is stocked with savory cured meats, while a raw bar overflows with sweet shrimp, briny oysters and — in season — stone crabs. A whole-roasted suckling pig (lechón) takes this buffet to another level. We always get: Lemon ricotta pancakes. edgerestaurantmiami.com.

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes at Edge Steak & Bar.

HABITAT Miami Beach The Pubbelly team has infused its Asia-meets-Latin-America flavors into the menu at Habitat at 1 Hotel. The Sunday brunch is extensive, so try to save room for all of its elements, including a raw bar, carving station, tacos, sushi and more. We always get: Dulce de leche French toast. 1hotels.com/ south-beach/taste.

the life Clockwise from left: Churros and chocolate at Cantina la Veinte; grilled meats steal the show at Quinto la Huella; breakfast gets a dusting of Old Bay at Local House; Ariete serves homemade pastelitos for brunch.

ETARU Hallandale Beach Part of the Zuma family, Etaru delivers a similar brand of super-fresh sushi and robata-grilled proteins as its sister restaurant but in a relaxed, beachy setting. Dessert is chef’s choice, so you can focus your decisions on everything else. Like, “Do I want to start with a Bloody Mary or a matcha-and-mango iced tea?” We always get: Grilled salad with chile and lime. etarurestaurant.us.

QUINTO LA HUELLA Brickell On the fifth floor of the East hotel, Quinto delivers classic South American cooking with an upscale twist. Head to the grill room — La Parrilla — to order your custom cut of meat cooked over wood fire. While you wait, load your plate with beautiful ceviches, salads and seasonal specialties. We always get: Unlimited rosé and mimosas. quintolahuella.com. LE SIRENUSE Surfside Once you order your main dish, impeccably trained servers begin to flood your table with a parade of family-style appetizers and sides. Charcuterie, grilled vegetables, eggplant parmesan and truffleflecked pastas are all in the rotation. After all of that, head to pastry chef Summer Navarro’s dessert room — dessert room! — to end on a sweet note. We always get: Charcoal-smoked filet mignon. sirenusemiami.com.

CANTINA LA VEINTE Brickell Mexican food for brunch is always perfect, especially if you have been a bit wild the night before. Tacos and ceviches play a starring role, supported by Cantina la Veinte’s fantastic margaritas and dessert churros. Plus, the waterfront location is like being right on the Mexican Riviera. We always get: Huevos rancheros. cantinala20.com.

AMARA AT PARAISO Edgewater For his next trick, chef Michael Schwartz will take Latin American flavors and present them via traditional dim-sum carts (the dessert cart is especially superb). Amara’s brunch menu changes weekly. What doesn’t change: one of the most magical views in Miami, right on Biscayne Bay. We always get: Grilled chorizo sandwich on Sullivan Street bread. amaraatparaiso.com. THREE BY NORMAN VAN AKEN Wynwood Emerald green accents and an exposed kitchen that our dinnerparty dreams are made of, Three serves a Sunday brunch that’s every bit as varied as Miami itself. Biscuits with country ham (worth every calorie), plantain pancakes with vanilla-bean syrup, and smoked-fish Benedict are just the beginning. We always get: Fried chicken and buckwheat waffles with smoked butter. threewynwood.com.

THE LOCAL HOUSE Miami Beach Many of South Beach’s most fashionable residents make their way here for brunch, because who can resist crispy breakfast potatoes with a dusting of Old Bay seasoning? For a meal in a glass, try the Italian Bloody Mary — loaded with garnishes of fresh mozzarella, mortadella and cherry tomatoes. We always get: Buttery lobster Benedict. localhousemiami.com. PLANT MIAMI Wynwood Vegan, kosher, organic — and unbelievably scrumptious. A weekend brunch menu supplements the regular menu. Non-eggy highlights include a corn-and-squash scramble that’s decorated in edible flowers under a sweet corn sauce with herbs and truffle oil. We always get: Curry arepas with mushrooms and cabbage slaw. thesacredspace.com/plant-miami.

NAIYARA Miami Beach Sunset Harbor’s go-to Thai favorite has a lineup of “traditional-ish” dishes on its Sunday brunch menu. Son-in-law eggs feature hard-boiled eggs with ground chicken, crispy shallots and tamarind sauce — shareable and perfect. We always get: Matcha waffles with Thai maple syrup. naiyara.com. MALIBU FARM Miami Beach A gorgeous ocean view is only the start of the delights you’ll find at Malibu Farm at the Eden Roc. A fun twist on the Middle Eastern specialty shakshouka gets the green-eggsand-ham treatment here, loaded with green harissa, chickpeas, chorizo, butternut squash, baby kale, salsa verde and Havarti cheese. We always get: Crab cakes with caper aioli. edenrochotelmiami.com.

THREEFOLD CAFÉ Coral Gables and South Miami Threefold may not have created avocado toast, but its version — the Smashed Avocado — has long been our favorite. Zak the Baker bread gets layered with thyme-roasted mushrooms followed by scoops of avocado with lime juice, basil and feta. Add a poached egg for good measure. Fresh as Fish At KYU in Wynwood, head chef Raheem Sealey channels his St. Croix upbringing to coax the most flavor out of every dish. WORDS BY ERIC BARTON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

I

f there’s one food memory that stands out to Raheem Sealey, it’s the lazy afternoons on the beach as a kid. He grew up in St. Croix, where he and his buddies would catch fish from the shore. They’d grill the fish over charcoal in the sand. They’d climb trees for coconuts, thwacking them open to drink their sweet water. Those beachfront barbecues taught Sealey the value of fresh ingredients. Now, as head chef at KYU in Wynwood, Sealey says it’s his mantra. “For me, cooking is just tasty food on the plate, like what my grandmother cooked in St. Croix,” he said. “I’m not into the tweezers and all that. Make something that people enjoy — that’s my philosophy.”

FROM DISHWASHER TO CHEF Sealey got his first kitchen job at 16 as a dishwasher at one of the island’s beach resorts. He worked his way up to the salad station, and the act of making food that people enjoyed clicked for him. He enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu in Miami in 2009, and Sealey said he found himself having to relearn culinary basics. “I thought I knew everything, like how to use a knife,” Sealey said. “Then I got to cooking school, and it was like starting over.” He worked at Michael’s Genuine during school, then at Sugarcane, where live-fire cooking became

62

his calling. Standing over the grill and smelling the coals reminded him of home. “I fell in love with cooking over that grill,” he said. “Everything you put over the fire comes out so good.” LIKE A KID AGAIN In 2012, while still at Sugarcane, Sealey took a second job, at Zuma. He worked there with chef Michael Lewis, who would become his mentor. Lewis asked Sealey what he wanted in a career. “Honestly?” Sealey said. “I want your job.” Not long after, Lewis made Sealey his No. 2 at Zuma, and he vowed to bring Sealey with him once he had his own restaurant. Lewis made good on that promise when KYU opened in 2016 and he hired Sealey as his sous chef. The next year, the James Beard Foundation named KYU a semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, and Lewis promoted Sealey to head chef. The new title didn’t change Sealey’s cooking philosophy. It’s evidenced in the restaurant’s Tuna Tataki appetizer, which gets only a kiss of heat, allowing top-quality fish to be the star. “It’s a dish that reminds me of home,” Sealey said. “I taste this and it’s like I’m a kid again, cooking fish on the beach.” KYU, 251 Northwest 25th Street, Miami; 786-577-0150; kyurestaurants.com.

TUNA TATAKI WITH ROASTED PEPPERS MAKES 4 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS 1 each red, orange and yellow bell pepper 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated ½ shallot, diced

1 1 1 1 1 3

garlic clove, diced tablespoon fish sauce, divided pound sushi-grade tuna loin serrano pepper, seeded and sliced thin scallion, sliced thin tablespoons ponzu sauce

1. Char bell peppers on all sides over a flame or under a broiler. Cover with plastic wrap in a bowl and allow to cool before peeling off blackened skin. Remove seeds and ribs; slice and reserve the flesh. 2. Sauté ginger, shallot and garlic in a small amount of oil until lightly golden. Deglaze with half of the fish sauce and add the reserved peppers. Add the remaining fish sauce, remove from heat and let cool. 3. Coat tuna with grapeseed or other neutral oil, season with salt and pepper, and sear for just a few seconds per side in a screaming-hot skillet. Cool in fridge before slicing with a sharp knife into quarter-inch slices. 4. To plate, place roasted peppers in the center of four cold bowls. Top with rolled tuna slices, serrano pepper and scallion. Pour ponzu sauce equally into the bowls. Season with sea salt.

iami is home to some world-class hotels. But that doesn’t mean that visitors are the only ones who can enjoy their perks. Check out these hotel bars — offering everything from live jazz to head-spinning wine lists — that don’t require you to check in.

IF YOU LOVE WINE… Boulud Sud at the JW Marriott Marquis At star chef Daniel Boulud’s Miami restaurant, head sommelier Haunah Klein stocks plenty of classic Bordeaux, sure. But she also pours wines all the way from Lebanon, Corsica and the Arabian Peninsula. “When someone opens the wine list, I hope they find wines from regions that they don’t always have the opportunity to choose from,” Klein said. 255 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami; bouludsud.com.

IF YOU LOVE WHISKY… The Bar at The Setai This bar’s crowning glory is its collection of Japanese whiskies, which range from entry-level bottles to hard-to-find labels. Purists will enjoy a flight of three rare whiskies for $33. Cocktail enthusiasts should try the Tokyo Mule, a fresh take on the classic that swaps out vodka for Toki Japanese whisky. 2001 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; thesetaihotel.com.

How long has the firm been serving South Florida clients? “I have been practicing law in South Florida for more than 33 years. My partners, Alex Espenkotter and Robert S. Beraha, have been practicing with me for 19 and 15 years, respectively. How many attorneys work for the firm? “We have three attorneys in the firm, all of whom have advanced Master of Laws degrees in Estate Planning. In addition, I am a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. What are the firm’s legal specialties? “We are a boutique firm specializing in estate, business and asset protection planning. Our estate planning services include preparation of wills, trusts, powers of attorney and related documents, tax reduction strategies, probate, guardianship and trust administration. Our business practice includes selection and creation of appropriate entities, considering tax consequences, ease or complexity of creation and operation, business succession issues and the relationships between the owners. Asset protection planning involves an assessment of a client’s exposure to potential liabilities and counseling them on how to reduce that exposure. What is the best part about practicing law in South Florida? “The diversity of the clients we serve is the best part. The variety of issues we see, as well as the people themselves, keep our practice interesting, challenging and rewarding. What sets your firm apart from others? “We combine the experience gained while practicing at several of South Florida's major law firms with the personal service, special attention and flexibility only a boutique firm can provide. Is there a particular case you can mention that exemplifies the firm's work and success? “Years before the recent recession, I implemented an estate plan for a highly leveraged real estate developer, which included a structure to protect his accumulated assets. When real estate values bottomed out, he found himself with mortgage and other debt in excess of $25 million. They foreclosed on his properties, but were unable to attach any of his other assets. If he had not had engaged in the planning we did for him, he would have lost everything he had, except his homestead.

Dan P. Heller

A managing partner of Heller Espenkotter, he’s Board Certified by the Florida Bar in wills, trusts and estates.

What is something people may not know about your firm that you would like them to know? “We are concerned about our community and thankful for the opportunities we have. As such, we support and participate in local and national charitable organizations. Often, our clients want to create their own charitable organizations, which we assist them in doing. I encourage everyone to give something back to his or her community whenever possible. Heller Espenkotter, PLLC, 2701 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Suite 301, Coral Gables; 305-777-3765; hellerlawgroup.com; dan@hellerlawgroup.com.

BRICKELL

Ramona Messore, VP and General Manager, Saks at Brickell City Centre.

In case you haven’t noticed, Brickell is booming. The neighborhood just south of downtown, home to Miami’s financial district, has shed its 9-to-5 reputation for a hive of endless activity. City living is soaring to new heights — Panorama Tower is the tallest residential building south of Manhattan — and includes brilliant, new mixed-use towers, like the aptly named Smart Brickell. Visitors from Broward and Palm Beach counties now easily zip in on the Brightline train. And Brickell plays a pivotal part in the Underline, the 10-mile linear park and pathway under the Metrorail’s elevated tracks. While neighborhood staples like The River Oyster Bar remain, Miami’s epicenter has seen a parade of new restaurants, such as Fi’lia by Michael Schwartz at SLS Brickell and Katsuya at the swanky new SLS Lux (see Staycation, p. 74). Shopping also got a boost from the addition of Brickell City Centre, whose desirable retail tenants add to its only-in-Miami appeal. Meet our guide

The anchor of Brickell City Centre is the posh, three-story Saks Fifth Avenue, where Ramona Messore has served as Vice President and General Manager since the store’s opening two years ago. Her goal: curate a Saks unlike any that shoppers have ever seen. “While Saks is the only true luxury shopping destination in downtown, when we opened the location, I also wanted it to be fun, lively and approachable with a focus on giving back to the city,” she said. Over the past few years, Messore has watched the neighborhood come alive. “In the past, you didn’t come to Brickell unless it was for business. Now, it’s a live-work-play destination.”

lashy and fabulous but also inviting and intimate, the new SLS Lux Brickell is where locals can get away while still in the midst of it all. Feeling flashy and fabulous? Enter through the S Bar door, guarded by Fernando Botero’s grandiose 10-foot-tall bronze masterpiece, Male Torso, welcoming guests on the corner of Southwest Eighth Street and South Miami Avenue. Shown on the Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the sculpture interprets the male figure in Botero’s signature opulent style and sets the tone for your stay, as does the nearby 40,000-squarefoot block mural by Fabian Burgos. But if it’s inviting and intimate you’re seeking, make your way to the ground-floor valet entrance. You’ll walk beneath a hanging garden into the marbled hotel lobby, where rich textures and an XOXO theme envelop you in hugs and kisses, and the bellman hands you a bottle of Evian. Even the air carries something sweet, thanks to a custom scent that wafts through the AC system. AN URBAN OASIS Either way, you’re in for a treat. Designed by duo Yabu Pushelberg, it’s the first SLS without Philippe Starck’s thumbprint, setting it apart from its sister property down the street, the SLS Brickell. The oversize guest rooms dazzle with a modern

The hallways, not to be outdone, are splashed with style and substance, decorated with museum-quality art and romantic poetry. Head to the amenity-filled ninth floor, an oasis in the middle of downtown’s skyscraper jungle, and step off the elevator into the Secret Garden, a quiet enclave that beckons with comfortable seating and lots of greenery. Around the corner, the palm tree-lined pool stretches on, and so do the expansive views of Brickell. POOL THEN GYM THEN SPA You could get comfy in a lounge chair, but the well-appointed cabanas (with ceiling fans!) are first-come, first-served, so get there early. Order an oversize piña colada from the nearby bar, which also features bites from the in-house Katsuya kitchen, and wade into the beach-entry pool. It’s actually two pools, as they’re separated by a strip of flooring that makes for a perfect spot to rest your drink. You can reserve some time on the tennis court (BYO racket and balls) or work off those cocktails using the fitness machines. The indoor gym is open 24 hours, but you can also hop on the outdoor fitness equipment or scale the rock-climbing wall. If the weather takes a turn, either head to the intimate Ciel Spa for a signature massage and rejuvenating facial or walk across the street to Brickell City Centre. If the hotel’s art collection has piqued your interest, you can summon the in-house chauffeured Lincoln Navigator for a ride to the Pérez Art Museum Miami. This location, the 14th worldwide, is the first designed by Yabu Pushelberg and mirrors a traditional Japanese izakaya with modern touches. The sophisticated décor includes a sake-box wall and a Daruma doll-inspired art installation suspended from the ceiling. Executive chef Denevin Miranda touts an innovative sushi and robata menu, and every dish he sends out looks like a work of art. You’ll still find Katsuya favorites like crispy rice with spicy tuna and 48-hour-marinated miso black cod on the menu. The sommelier, meantime, will help pair your courses with a mix of sake, wine and cocktails. Though your belly might resemble Buddha’s by the time the check arrives, don’t miss out on a flashy and fabulous nightcap next door at the sexy, sultry S Bar. Sidle into seats beneath a big chandelier and enjoy the scene. Before you head upstairs to crash, don’t forget to step outside and bid goodnight — or offer XOXOs — to Male Torso. The Breakers, with its 70 rooms, is considered the crown jewel, while the Rosecliff is a Hollywood favorite — The Great Gatsby and 27 Dresses both filmed here. PORTLAND, MAINE Every year, more and more Miamians flock to scenic Maine. The seaside city of Portland happens to be one of the hottest foodie destinations in the country. the life is the place to head for its abundant raw bar and a buzzing night scene. The town’s best lobster roll is a matter of high debate, but J’s Oyster is our pick, and the laid-back, seaside setting is an all-around delight. For a lobster break, head to tiny Vietnamese noodle spot Cong Tu Bot; the pho is truly expert-level. Art and fashion coincide in Portland. Explore unique, artisanal works like the sand-made jewelry of Beachdashery or the local photography, pottery and more at Lisa-Marie’s. MARTHA’S VINEYARD & CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod embody New England coastal imagery: shingled exteriors, preppy residents and quaint walking towns. If you’re looking for unspoiled, dune-filled beaches, head straight to the Cape. Stay at one of two deluxe resorts, both of which boast a loyal, year-after-year clientele: The 100-year-old oceanfront Chatham Bars Inn is as iconic as it gets, with its sand-washed brick exterior, private beach and refined restaurants; the elegant Wequassett Resort & Golf Club, on a quiet, sailboat-dotted bay, is great for families. The Wequassett’s Twenty-Eight Atlantic restaurant is one of the most acclaimed on the Cape, thanks to enchanting dishes like the fluke crudo — balanced by sweet local watermelon and a zippy vinaigrette. The Vineyard is nothing if not distinguished, from its Kennedy history to its constant crop of Hollywood visitors. Take advantage of the off-season in bustling Edgartown. Stay at the sprawling, idyllic Winnetu Oceanside Resort, a perfect location for surfing and beaching. Nearby, the historic Charlotte Inn houses The Terrace restaurant, where chef Justin Melnick expertly applies French techniques to New England classics.

LITCHFIELD, CONNECTICUT New England’s lush countryside, with its covered bridges and rolling hills, is truly magical. The picturesque region of Litchfield is dripping in charm and upscale surprises — no wonder Diane von Furstenberg lives nearby. When the president and vice president of Manolo Blahnik buy a house and a farm in the country, it must be something special. Arethusa Farm now boasts a prize-winning dairy, critically acclaimed restaurant al tavolo, a beloved coffee shop and two stores. “Litchfield offers us a special kind of solitude from the craziness of our Manhattan lives,” the couple, George Malkemus and Anthony Yurgaitis, said. “It’s a paradise.” If “cozy luxury” were a hotel category, Winvian Farm would define it. ashion en pointe For years, fashion designers have looked to the intersection of high art and haute couture to create looks with the movement and beauty of dance in mind. This fall, dance-inspired fashion is everywhere, from runway shows to ready-to-wear ensembles. INDULGE tapped into the trend by enlisting four Miami City Ballet dancers — principals Katia Carranza, Jennifer Lauren, Renan Cerdeiro and principal soloist Alexander Peters — to showcase some of the moment’s top looks and major designers. VIVIANA MOYA

is a North Miami Beach

native who has been living in New York for the past nine years. When she comes home, she loves going to Faena Miami Beach, where the hotel’s rich golds and reds provide a stylish backdrop for her retro-meetsmodern outfit. Moya pairs Valentino sandals and a Lisa Says Gah jelly basket with a headpiece crafted by her grandmother (who taught Moya how to sew), a vintage robe and a bodysuit that she converted into a bikini.

MATT KARAS, originally from

Michigan, lives in South Miami and makes his way to Faena Forum every month for its roller skating socials. Karas says he likes to dress in his best ’80s gear for the events. We snapped him wearing an Oakley jacket and ASOS overalls with his old-school skates.

NOREETA PHILANDER

of Cape Town, South Africa, visits The Broken Shaker during a recent vacation to Miami Beach. “Miami reminds me a lot of home. There’s a very cosmopolitan vibe, but you can also wander into a very chill scene.” She’s chill indeed with a Zara skirt, The Fix top, Adidas sneakers and Ray-Ban sunglasses.

MIRA CHAYKIN, left, and her cousin SYDNEY CHAYKIN hang at The Standard

Hotel wearing similar fashions. Their fitted, high-waisted white and black jeans contrast each other, giving a yin-yang aesthetic. Open-shoulder lace crop tops are good to show off a Miami tan during the day or for a night out (look for similar pieces from Los Angeles brand For Love and Lemons). Sydney, a Miami local, details her look with long, classic pearls, while Mira adds a pop of color with red lipstick. Both complete their outfits with light-tan strapped heels.

to show off his style over matcha ice cream at 1-800-Lucky, the Asian food hall and bar in Wynwood. He rocks Balenciaga Triple S trainers, a Givenchy T-shirt and a Givenchy cross-body bag.

ost of my work is concerned with destroying — or at least deconstructing — conventional ideas of beauty,” designer and businesswoman Miuccia Prada said. “Fashion fosters clichés of beauty, but I want to tear them apart.” By skillfully juxtaposing prints, using unorthodox materials and challenging our notions of what is fashionable, she has kept the name Prada synonymous with fashion innovation for decades. Case in point are her new jackets in collaboration with Linea Rossa. Unisex and adorned with archival Prada prints, the jackets are set ablaze in contrasting colors. Metaphorically, they represent her impulse as a designer to break down the old and make it new again. The jackets are garish and daring, yet they feel contemporary and cool in a way Prada always does. “Basically,” she said, “I’m trying to make men more sensitive and women stronger.” $2,340 each.
