very day in Miami is a reminder that we’re living the good life. Our back yard is an adult playground with myriad toys vying for our attention. The luxuries that make their way into the pages of INDULGE — from upscale travel and decadent restaurants to magnificent homes and designer brands — aren’t anomalies in South Florida; they’re the norm. But it would be tone-deaf to suggest that this is the only way of life here. Like every major U.S. city, Miami has a significant number of people who struggle daily to make ends meet and who live in the margins of all the glitz and glamour. As we glide into the holiday season — as visitors and snowbirds return in droves to romp in our playground — we are reminded not only to give thanks for what we have, but to give back to those who are less fortunate than we are. In our Holiday Gifts & Givers issue, we introduce you to some of Miami’s most selfless citizens. People like Ana VeigaMilton (p. 46), chair of the Zoo Miami Foundation, whose family came to Miami from Cuba with an uncertainty of what the future held but Evan S. Benn with a steadfast conviction that, “no matter what, we’re going to make it.” Editor in Chief She made it — with engineering and law degrees from the University of Miami to show for it — and now makes it her life’s mission to contribute to this community. People like Drs. Narendra and Rekha Kini (p. 54), physicians who share a sense of compassion that goes far beyond good bedside manners. “I was taught that if you were lucky enough in life to get everything you need, you should help others, too,” Rekha says. People like our cover stars, David and Isabela Rangel Grutman (p. 88), who built their celebrity status as a nightlife mogul and an international model but who have a lesser-told side to their story: They give back by helping Miami’s underprivileged kids through Style Saves. All of the talk about giving leads to our biggest-ever Holiday Gift Guide (p. 94), where we enlisted 10 expert Miamians to point out this season’s must-haves: gadgets, beauty products, housewares, stuff for the kids and much more. While we were putting the finishing touches on this issue, a gift of good news came to us from New York. INDULGE earned recognition as a national finalist in the 2016 Folio Awards for Best Design of a Consumer Magazine. It’s a big deal for those of us whose names you see printed below and for others who work behind the scenes to help serve you this slice of Miami’s good life. Here’s wishing you, your families and your loved ones a happy and fulfilling holiday season.

contributors JENNIFER AGRESS

Luxury travel and dining writer Jennifer Agress knows her way around fine food, haute hotels and creative cocktails. She is the City Editor of DiningOut Miami and a contributor to Private Air Luxury Homes magazine, Modern Luxury Brides, Jezebel, Thrillist and more. When she’s not combing Miami for good vegetarian food or a latte, she’s likely getting some sun or looking up flights to her second-favorite city: Paris. In this issue, Jennifer shows how to plan a night out along the Miami River. “Miami is so big that it’s hard to know where to go,” Jennifer says. “That’s part of the beauty of this city. You can grab your friends and go to one small part of it, like the Miami River, and find plenty of spots to have fun.”

BILL KEARNEY

Freelance journalist Bill Kearney lives in Miami and specializes in writing about the urbane, the delicious and the primal. Recent credits include pieces for Wallpaper*, the Miami Herald, Sport Fishing magazine and cover stories for the Miami New Times — one on Lake Okeechobee’s environmental crisis and another on the legendary Florida skunk ape. In this issue of INDULGE, Bill interviewed developer Andrew Frey in a conversation that bounced from modernism to morality to mortgages. “Andrew is a big thinker,” Bill says. “It was fascinating to hear his take on why Miami develops the way it does, and what that means to the fabric of our town.”

STEPHANIE SAYFIE AAGAARD

A native of Miami, Stephanie Sayfie Aagaard covers the social, celebrity, sports, fashion and charity scenes in South Florida for her “Steph Sez” column in the Miami Herald. And she reports on the latest galas and charity balls for INDULGE’s Philanthropy page, which this issue took her to Breakthrough Miami’s Supporta-Scholar Celebration. Steph also is the Senior Director of Major Gifts, Corporate Relations, Marketing and Events at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and The Buoniconti Fund. She produces high-profile fundraisers, including the Great Sports Legends Dinner in New York, and has created the star-studded Destination Fashion event at Bal Harbour Shops. Steph is a proud wife and a mom to two amazing sons, Anders and Austin.

JOHN MICHAEL COTO

Graphic design and visual arts have been a fundamental part of John Michael Coto’s life since an early age. His passions for food, wine, travel, interior design, architecture and fashion all are evident in the pages he creates as INDULGE’s Contributing Design Director. A graduate of the University of Miami’s College of Arts & Sciences and Miami Dade College, Mike has more than 15 years of experience as Art Director for prestigious U.S., Caribbean and Spanish-language publications, including Architectural Digest, Cosmopolitan, Casa & Estilo Internacional, Teen, Triunfo Semanal and Glamour. He calls INDULGE a publication that is “a true and all-encompassing reflection of my interests,” and one that speaks directly to the readers of the city where he grew up and that he loves.

SARA FIEDELHOLTZ

For the past 25 years, Sara Fiedelholtz has been involved in various creative endeavors, including magazine publishing, corporate development, brand extensions and strategic planning. She is the former editor of Executive South Florida and Cravings South Florida magazines. Her freelance work has appeared in such publications as Self, American Way, Chicago, Vogue and Teen. Sara has a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, a master’s in journalism from Columbia University and a certificate from the Kellogg Management Institute, Northwestern University/Kellogg School of Management. She interviewed Hoffman’s Chocolates’ Jarett Levan for her debut article in INDULGE. Her favorite Hoffman’s confection: milk-chocolate-covered pretzels.

ANDREA CARNEIRO

A freelance writer and editor for more than a decade, Andrea Carneiro has worked for publications in Miami and New York and is responsible for filling INDULGE’s Launching Now and Culture pages with the best of what’s new in Miami. This month, Andi turns her attention to the holidays, working with some of the city’s most in-the-know residents to find out what’s good to give in 2016 — an assignment that turned out to be even more entertaining than she expected. “Brian [Brackeen] and I bonded over our obsession with the Amazon Echo,” she says. “My brother bought me one as a gift, and now everyone who comes to my house ends up ordering one on the spot!”

Employees Only, one of New York’s original craft cocktail bars, is taking up residence in South Beach at the Washington Park Hotel. Timed to open before Art Basel and its throngs of thirsty night owls, EO will bring all the best of its West Village location, including late hours, tableside steak tartare and fun quirks like psychic readings and burlesque performances. Cocktails, too, will pull from EO’s popular drink menu. We’re partial to the Billionaire Cocktail: Knob Creek single-barrel bourbon shaken with fresh lemon juice, housemate grenadine and absinthe bitters. 1030 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach; 305-421-6265; facebook.com/ employeesonlymiami.

The Sound MISO Chic

THE MOVEMENT Street Art for Mankind The first edition of a five-year project kicks off in Miami on November 10, as prominent street artists join forces to educate, inspire and raise money for the fight against child slavery. Ten artists will begin work on a 12,000-square-foot “corpse” made of 16 shipping containers: a visual tribute to the children of the world, which will ultimately be auctioned off to benefit the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation. Another 20 artists will continue the project after the new year. 181 Northeast 79th Street, Miami; streetartmankind.org.

The Event Miami Book Fair International

Described as “paint for the soul,” the second incarnation of Miami Symphony Orchestra’s popular event at the Adrienne Arsht Center pairs live visual arts — painting, sculpture and urban art — with a 90-minute musical performance on November 20. The orchestra will world-premiere two works (Marturet & Mikesell’s Pictures for an Exhibition and Le Frak’s variations on work by Sandra Muss) as well as delight audiences with selections by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Ravel and Strauss. Knight Concert Hall, 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami; themiso.org.

The Opportunity

Give Miami Day Once again, the nation’s literary and pop-culture elite converge on the Magic City for eight days of speakers, events and, yes, books. This year’s fair runs November 13-20, kicking off with talks by Univision anchor Jorge Ramos and “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah. After that: an eclectic lineup of events and authors, including political bad boy James Carville, actor Alan Cumming and famed columnist Maureen Dowd. Literary legend Joyce Carol Oates and “Top Chef” host and cookbook author Padma Lakshmi also present must-see sessions. miamibookfair.com.

The Miami Foundation’s annual 24-hour giving event — November 17 — lets givers of all financial levels donate to more than 600 nonprofits that serve MiamiDade. As an added karmic perk, the foundation and its partners will make a bonus gift for every donation between $25 and $10,000 received on that day. Last year’s event set a record, raising more than $7 million from 17,000 donors worldwide. givemiamiday.org.

With a busy medical career, 2.1 million Instagram followers (instagram.com/doctor.mike) and enviable extracurriculars — he works out like an elite athlete, has friends as gorgeous as he is and has dated the reigning Miss Universe — Mikhail “Dr. Mike” Varshavski seems to have mastered the work-life balance. In fact, that’s what drew him to social media in the first place: “I wanted to show students that you don’t have to give up your life and your hobbies to study medicine,” he told INDULGE. Today, the Russian-born New Yorker named Sexiest Doctor Alive by People magazine is finishing his medical residency in New Jersey but spends one weekend a month in Miami Beach, where he and his father co-own an apartment. He’s also using his strong social-media game for good: Varshavski’s foundation, Limitless Tomorrow, gives grants to promising students who might not qualify for academic scholarships. Here, the 26-year-old (he turns 27 in mid-November) shares his locals picks for staying fit and selfie-ready. limitlesstomorrow.org.

THE STANDARD “I’ll occasionally visit for a full-day relaxation experience — only if I’m coming off a really rough week in New York. I like the hammam, hydrotherapy and a deep-tissue massage.” 40 Island Avenue, Miami Beach; 305-673-1717; standardhotels.com.

LEO IZQUIERDO AT IGK SALON “It’s this little hair salon hidden inside the SLS South Beach. Brother and sister Adam and Caroline Hasid share a rabid appreciation for upscale French pharmacies. So it’s no surprise that their cheery Bay Harbor Drugs & Beauty Bar stocks everything from medications to cool makeup brands to La Roche-Posay skincare products that are generally only sold across the pond. The concept is brilliant: The siblings work in the back, filling prescriptions and chatting to customers they generally know by name. Up front, the floor-to-ceiling shelves are crammed with exquisite European beauty products, kids’ toys and whimsical gifts you can’t find anywhere else — all the better to knock out your holiday shopping lightning-fast. LET’S GET REAL It can be hard to find luxury cosmetics that can stand up to a sweltering day in Miami. But beautifully sheer options that last beyond the laws of logic are the specialty of Leslie Munsell, a Miami-based makeup artist and equestrian. Her product line, Beauty for Real, caters to the non-couch-potato set. “I’ve worked with lots of athletes and sporty-spice types,” said Munsell, whose clients include Shakira, Dwyane Wade and the Williams sisters. “I want to help active women look pretty in a clean, sophisticated way that’s easy, stays intact and is good for their skin.” Made with soothing botanicals in tried-and-true hues, her cream eye shadows and lip pencil (a chameleon that works on pale and deep skin tones) are so superlative they amaze even jaded beauty junkies. “Women buy the lip pencils six at a time,” Munsell said with pride. “They’re afraid we’re going to discontinue it — but we’re not!” beautyforreal.com.

WHAT Breakthrough Miami’s fourth annual Support-A-Scholar celebration brought out South Florida’s education-minded social set, who kicked it up on the dance floor and raised more than $500,000 for student scholarships. WHERE The breathtaking waterfront Miami Beach manse of philanthropist Jeff Miller served as the magnificent venue for the charitable affair. The fashionable crowd played for hours at the expansive backyard bash, bidding on auction items like a lavish wine dinner at Miller’s estate and a Sunday brunch on a spectacular yacht. WHO Event chairs Tamara Feola, Sharon Srebnick, Bonnie Weinberger, Abby Zanarini and host Jeff Miller pulled out all the stops. An extravagant dance floor was suspended over the swimming pool, and it was packed all night thanks to nonstop live tunes by dueling pianos. Golden Bar’s locations in Coconut Grove (pictured), Wynwood and Miami Beach are lined with indie clothing and accessories as well as fun gifts for the home, like chic ceramic vases, fancy soaps and candles, and framed prints with cheeky sayings. The coasters emblazoned with celebrity mugshots are a nod to Golden Bar owner Leslie Ames, top, and her former career as a rock critic and publicist.

Gold

Shopkeeper Leslie Ames’ Golden Bar reflects the essence of Coconut Grove: eclectic, eccentric and inviting.

A

t Golden Bar, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. On one side of this charming Coconut Grove boutique, you’ll find adorable home goods and knickknacks that can suit a gift list for any occasion. On the other side, a pocket of cute and casual women’s clothing and accessories — a treat, perhaps, for the gift-giver herself. “I love little boutiques full of local handmade jewelry and independent labels, not chains where you find yourself wearing the same dress at a party as someone else,” said Leslie Ames, Golden Bar’s owner, who handpicks every item she sells as if she were shopping for herself. Ames and her husband, Sebastian Fernandez, have played a formidable role in the latest resurgence of the Grove. This year they opened 33 Kitchen, a quaint Peruvian gem in the former space of Bombay Darbar. And before that came Golden Bar, with an aesthetic and inventory that perfectly captures the essence of the Grove: eclectic, inviting and lush with eccentricities. “The reason I opened my first U.S. boutique in Coconut Grove is because we live here, my kids go to school here, and everything is in walking distance,” Ames said. “I’d never open a store in a shopping center or a mall. I’d rather enjoy having a coffee outdoors and walking to find little treasures.”

36

INDULGE | NOVEMBER 2016 | www.miamiindulge.com

Ames has mastered the art of reflecting the soul of the neighborhood she is in. She opened a second Golden Bar last year on Washington Avenue, giving a much-needed breath of indie and local to the tourist-heavy heart of South Beach. And in late September she opened her third Golden Bar, in Wynwood. “The spirit of Wynwood has so much to do with the independent style of Golden Bar,” she said. At each location, you’ll find a mélange of swoon-worthy goods, all ready to be wrapped, tied and handed off to an eager receiver. For the friend who enjoys oneoff apothecary, there are perfumes, lotions and soaps by brands like TokyoMilk, Library of Flowers and Lollia. For the refined homemaker, there are decorative candles and glassware, frames with tongue-in-cheek sayings, and coffee-table books on a number of subjects, from fashion to Wes Anderson. For those who delight over a cute tassel bracelet or pom-trimmed raffia tote, accessories are teeming. And for you? The rows of perfectly organized dresses, tops and skirts can take you from day to night with just a simple change of shoes. WORDS BY ASHLEY BROZIC / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

PEOPLE WHO MOVE MIAMI.

The Founder and President of Friends of the Underline is driving the train to fund a 10-mile linear park that’s set to transform Miami.

the movers ‘The High Line took 10 years to build two miles. I think it will take us less time. Our goal is to finish in six years.’ department who basically adopted me and this project. Then, the University of Miami School of Architecture did design studios and probably donated about $250,000 of pro-bono time. Finally, our master plan was created by James Corner Field Operations. Today, we’re working on raising the funds.” CURRENT STATUS “We’re going to start building in the fall of 2017 in the Brickell area. Our goal is to finish in six years. The High Line took 10 years to build two miles. I think it will take us less time because of the need here and the decision-making that’s going on.” BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED “One of the great expressions I’ve heard came from the founder of the High Line. He said if I didn’t get 100 people a day saying no to me, then I wasn’t talking to enough people. I think we all can deliver more than we ever thought possible as long as we continue to be challenged.”

VITALS 56. Digital marketer and community activist. Founder and President of Friends of The Underline. Born in Cambridge, Mass., the middle child in a family of five siblings. Moved to Miami as a baby. Her parents — Parker, an attorney, and Vann, a stay-at-home mom — found that Miami was ripe for cultural development. The Thomsons and their “mini-army” of children set out to help build a new city, one flier and petition at a time. Meg Thomson grew up in Coral Gables and graduated from Ransom Everglades before going on to Vanderbilt University, where she majored in English. Married John Daly: a software engineer, musician and former Olympic fencer. After a stint in Atlanta, they moved back to Miami in 1984. Raised two children: Sean, 30, and Alex, 28. A bicycle accident at Matheson Hammock park led to Meg Daly’s current philanthropic calling. Riding public transportation, she realized the space under the Metrorail was largely untapped. Daly grabbed the attention of the Knight Foundation, which connected her with architects, urban planners and decision-makers. They developed a plan for The Underline, a linear park mimicking New York’s famed High Line Park. The Underline will stretch 10 miles from Brickell to Dadeland and incorporate urban trails, green spaces and retail centers. The city and county have committed up to $53 million to fund The Underline. Daly’s nonprofit and its supporters are seeking the final $67 million needed to complete it. Groundbreaking is projected to begin next fall. CURRENT JOB Founder and President of Friends of The Underline, a nonprofit that’s leading the charge to build a 10-mile linear park and urban trail beneath the Metrorail. IN THE GENES “My parents came here in the 1960s, so the Miami we see today is not the Miami that they moved to. They felt that Miami had this open structure that gave you the opportunity to believe in something. They instilled that mantra in me. Today, my Dad continues to be an asset for development; he’s actively involved in The Underline by my side.” STARTING FROM SCRATCH “The Underline started with a big vision for a park space. The Knight Foundation flew me to Copenhagen, a city that had very recently transformed its urban transit system, to study what they’d done. Then I was connected with a couple of brilliant people at the Miami-Dade Parks

INDULGE | NOVEMBER 2016 | www.miamiindulge.com

WHY THE UNDERLINE? “Eighty-seven percent of people don't bike because they're scared. We're the fourth most dangerous place to bike in the United States, and the most dangerous place to bike in Florida. We're never going to get people on bikes unless we can get safe facilities for them to do it.” WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? “The people I meet. For example, I wouldn’t have had a meeting with Albert Hernandez from Miami-Dade Transit this morning, who’s a very committed public servant. I wouldn’t have met Maria Nardi and Jack Kardys. I wouldn’t have met the leadership from Swire Properties. All of these people are committed to making Miami a better place to live.” GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE “We live in a 1926 historic home in the French Village in Coral Gables. We worked with Joanna Lumbard at the University of Miami, who planned a gorgeous, landscaped French garden, with imported roses. I couldn’t live without it.” LIVING PERSON MOST ADMIRED “My children, because they’re fearless. Their generation always knew more than we did about technology, and I think it’s really shaken up entrepreneurship and civic engagement. They believe in their process, and what they bring to the table has value.” MOST TREASURED GIFT “A lot of people ask me about the cross that I wear. I have a mold made so that every girl in my family will have my cross. I got it when I was confirmed at 14, from my mom who bought it at the church shop. I literally have people stop me in the street around the world asking about its origin, but I’ve never found its source.” IF YOU COULDN’T DO WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING… “I think I would go into landscape design. I think city design and planning should be intuitive, and it should lead us to a positive outcome.” LAST TIME YOU DID SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME “I do something for the first time every day. I really have no credentials to be doing what I’m doing, other than being surrounded by really good people who know more than I do and are educating me every day.” MOTTO “Prepare to fail, and never give up.” WORDS BY NICOLE MARTINEZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Ana VeigaMilton The fiercely philanthropic chair of the Zoo Miami Foundation won’t rest until her community provides education, healthcare and culture for all.

T

here are not enough hours in the day for one person to save the world, but Ana VeigaMilton perhaps has come closest — the philanthropist and wife and mother of three has sat on the boards of more organizations than we can fit in print. “I’m very into community and into family,” she said. “I’m not at peace if anything’s not right in the community.” Born in Cuba, VeigaMilton remembers growing up in an immigrant family in the United States, one determined to be successful and get an education, that “no matter what happens in this country, we’re going to make it.” She graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in engineering and followed in her father’s footsteps to work at BellSouth. Then, she returned to school for a degree in law — all the while balancing a wedding to her husband, Cecil Milton, and the subsequent birth of their first child — and practiced family law, pro bono.

46

INDULGE | NOVEMBER 2016 | www.miamiindulge.com

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL After the couple had three children, VeigaMilton decided to stay at home to care for her family. She found herself making lots of trips to Zoo Miami, so much that she was asked to join what was then the Zoological Society of Florida. With Miami’s image in the ’80s and ’90s tainted in the news and in Hollywood as being overrun by drugs and violence, she was eager to be a part of something that showed how wonderful the city was. She eagerly accepted and volunteered for all that she could — as long as she was home by 3 p.m. when her kids returned from school. “I love the conservation work and the impact they have globally,” VeigaMilton said of the zoo. “Anybody can stare into the eyes of a gorilla, or any animal, and feel a connection. It transcends background, it transcends financial status.” Zoo Miami is actively involved in a number of projects and causes, including the Florida panther recovery program, preservation of the Pine Rocklands and helping increase the number of the world’s cheetahs. In her time with the zoo, VeigaMilton has served as chair of the Ball of the Wild, a member of the Feast with the Beast host committee, and she is currently chair of the Zoo Miami Foundation Board — she can be credited for the name change. And her favorite animal when she’s walking through the zoo? The zebras. “I like that zebras are a bit aggressive and have attitude yet protect each other in the herd,” she explained. “My favorite exhibit is the Samburu Station, where zebras can be seen sharing space with ostriches and giraffes. Having multi-species exhibits is enriching for the animals as well as for the visitor, who gets a better idea of how these beautiful animals interact with each other.” MORE HELP TO GIVE As if VeigaMilton weren’t busy enough, more doors opened for her to help the community, especially with education and families. She has been a part of the Miami-Dade Community Relations Board, the Tocqueville Society and Women's Leadership of United Way of Miami-Dade, University of Miami Citizens Board, Jackson Health Foundation Board, Tiffany Circle of the Red Cross and the Miracle Society of Big Brothers Big Sisters. “You start seeing the needs, you start seeing how can there be so much poverty in Miami, and how can everybody not be getting the same type of education? And why doesn’t everyone go to college who wants to?” she asked. “I believe if you want to and you know how to study, you shouldn’t be limited because your parents can’t afford it. There should be a way for you to be able to go to college.” In 2013, the Jose Milton Foundation was founded in honor of VeigaMilton’s late father-in-law. In three years, it has gifted $250,000 to Zoo Miami to refurnish its Animal Fun Factory, $125,000 to the University of Miami’s College of Engineering. This year it gave its first $5,000 Advancing Minorities in STEM Scholarship to a college student through Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson’s 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. Most proudly, $10 million will be given to the Jackson Health Foundation over the next decade. The hospital is important to the Milton family, as it was the place where the family patriarch was treated. “He thought he had the best care possible,” she said. “He said that he — who is a leader, a pillar — received the same exact medical care as someone who may have come in who can’t pay the bill. He said, ‘That’s how it should be.’” The money will be used to help build the Jackson West Campus, providing healthcare to the west Miami-Dade community, an area considered to be a “healthcare desert.” In October, the foundation celebrated the groundbreaking of the campus. “I am so thrilled that words can’t even [describe],” VeigaMilton said. “We’re fortunate enough that we have the giving capacity to make a difference.” WORDS BY CHRISTIANA LILLY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

A

ndrew Frey is not your typical Miami developer. Firstly, he majored in philosophy at Boston College. Secondly, his mantra is not go-big-orgo-home but rather “unleash the small.” The case study for Frey’s philosophy is his rental development in Little Havana (at 769 Northwest First Street), a slick eight-unit townhome that broke ground this summer. It has no parking, and Frey hopes its fine-grain infill approach will become a model for Miami’s new urbanism. INDULGE sat down with Frey to discuss how small ownership can have a big impact on a community. Why is small development a good thing? “When you build small, incremental pieces, the character of the neighborhood gets to stay, as opposed to the Miami model, which is assemble half a block, demolish existing context, miss the market peak, [and] sit on a vacant lot for 10 years. [In a small model], the new buildings you’re adding are contextual, they fit into the context of the neighborhood.” That sustains character, but what about economics? “If you build really big buildings, only a small number of people can really own that building. But if you build an eightunit apartment building, a lot more people can own that size building. By developing in a fine-grain pattern of ownership, you’re distributing the gains of urban revitalization.” Why isn’t this happening more often in Miami? “In Miami 21, the city-wide zoning code, zones that allow threeto five-floor apartment buildings (T4 and T5) allow those buildings to be divided into so few apartments that you end up with units around 2,000 square feet. There’s no market for it.” How did you get around this? “I built in the T6-8 zone [70 units per acre] to divide my building into units that people could afford. What I’m hoping is that I can take my prototype to city officials and say, ‘This is what T4 is supposed to be. Fix the density.’ And by the way, imagine what that would do for housing affordability.”

{DEVELOPER}

Andrew Frey His less-is-more approach to building has the potential to reshape Miami’s urban landscape.

Most developers wouldn’t think in those terms. “Well, when you unleash the small, you catalyze far more investment than you do when you prioritize speculation, and confine development to the province of a few large corporations. You get better urbanism as a result.” Why is community and urbanism important to you? “The more I love other people and humanity, the more interest and consequences I’m taking into account at every decision I make. That can only happen when you feel a sense of solidarity with your community. Sociologist Richard Sennett says the skills that it takes to live in a city — tolerance for people who are not like you, empathy for people that have nothing to give you — these are things we need to be able to do to have a rich human existence.” What philosopher influenced your thinking about urbanism? “It would be Immanuel Kant for his ‘categorical imperative.’ Something is only morally right for you if it would be morally right for everyone else, too.” WORDS BY BILL KEARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Gabriela Rachadell de Delgado

The Venezuelan-born attorney and co-chair of this month’s Boys & Girls Club of Miami-Dade gala wants to find opportunities for each of the organization’s 8,000 young beneficiaries.

F

or Gabriela Rachadell de Delgado, growing up in Caracas was something of an idyll. Her father, Juan José Rachadell, was a longserving senator in Venezuela, and later the country’s attorney general from 1989-1992. Her mother, Gabriela Montero de Rachadell, had the luxury of staying home and devoting herself to her six children. “Studying was the only thing they required of us,” said Rachadell, who has law degrees from her homeland and from Harvard, plus two master’s degrees: one in tax law, from Venezuela’s Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, and one in business administration, for which she studied at New York University, the London School of Economics and HEC Paris. “I learned from my parents that an education is the cornerstone of every individual’s life,” said Rachadell, who represents international oil and gas companies that do business in Venezuela and other parts of Latin America. THE WILL TO GIVE The other thing she learned from her parents is that it should be every

50

individual’s obligation to find a way to give back. Which is why, soon after moving to Miami in 2013 with her husband, Juan José Delgado, also a lawyer from Venezuela, she got involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Miami-Dade. She is co-chair of the organization’s 10th annual Wild About Kids Gala, one of Miami’s best-attended fundraising evenings, planned for November 12 at The Ritz-Carlton in Key Biscayne. “My father was a public servant for 30 years. He took that role very seriously. But politics can be a very dirty business and you have to really love it, because you get attacked all day. I felt that I could do more through philanthropy,” Rachadell said. “There is much less drama and your work is much more appreciated.” She had long been attuned to the needs of underprivileged children. Among other projects, she had benefited a small orphanage in Venezuela, sending monthly checks and showing up with gifts for everyone at Christmas. But once she and her husband decided to make Miami their base, she looked for a kid-focused organization closer to home to which she could also lend a hand.

INDULGE | NOVEMBER 2016 | www.miamiindulge.com

FOCUS ON THE CHILDREN “I was impressed with the efficiency of the Boys & Girls Club. Only 10 percent of their budget goes to administrative costs. The rest goes directly to programs for the 8,000 kids they serve,” Rachadell said. “They give kids something positive to do after school and in the summer. They focus on homework, sports, arts and crafts, helping kids do better in school and develop their particular talents. And helping parents be able to go to work knowing their kids are safe and not on the streets. It is so important for a child to feel encouraged and cherished, and that is what Boys & Girls Club does so well.” She was especially convinced it was the organization she wanted to devote her time to after its president, Alex Rodriguez-Roig, shared an anecdote. “He told me in tears about a little girl who was being physically abused at home. He had such affection for this child, and they hadn’t imagined she was suffering this abuse. They stepped in and removed her from that situation.”

A few weeks before the November 12 gala — this year’s honorees are Alexandra Villoch, president and publisher of the Miami Herald Media Company, and Judith Kramer, retired Miami-Dade Public Schools executive — Rachadell and co-chair Marile Lopez had already raised nearly $400,000 of their $600,000 target. They were still hustling to fill empty seats, secure items for the silent auction and find the evening’s entertainment. “We are very cash-conscious. So we have to find an act that is willing to perform for free or for a very small amount of money,” said Rachadell, who is so impressed with the way the Boys & Girls Club operates, that she wants to recreate the model in Venezuela. “I plan to start a fundraising campaign in 2017 to start a Boys & Girls Club in Venezuela, where it is so desperately needed,” she said. “But I will always be committed to the Miami-Dade Boys & Girls Club. After all, Miami is home base. I don’t have any children myself, but I feel like I have 8,000 kids now, all over Miami.” WORDS BY LYDIA MARTIN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

Jarett Levan

The CEO of Fort Lauderdale-based BBX Capital — parent company of South Florida’s legendary Hoffman’s Chocolates — gets serious about sweets.

N

othing is sweeter than success. And for Jarett Levan, success tastes better than ever now that he’s swapped banking for bon-bons. Levan served as president and CEO of BankAtlantic until the bank was sold in 2012; he then moved into the confectionary world with the acquisition of Hoffman’s Chocolates from the founder’s family in 2013. “I always wanted to be in the candy business,” Levan said. “Candy makes people happy. Who doesn’t like Willy Wonka?” LOCAL TRADITION Hoffman’s has been satisfying South Florida’s sweet tooth for more than 40 years. Its milk- and dark-chocolatecovered pretzels, pecan pralines, peanut brittle and almond butter crunch are made locally in Greenacres. Levan’s favorites? The dark-chocolate pretzels and dark-chocolate salted caramels. Levan, 43, grew up in Miami and first got involved in the world of confections in 6th grade, when he bought candy at the local five-and-dime to sell at school. His business soared — until the school principal confiscated his product. His latest foray into candy is much more on the up and up. Hoffman’s just opened its 11th retail location. And in addition to Hoffman’s, parent company BBX Sweet Holdings — a wholly owned subsidiary of Levan’s BBX Capital — has seven national wholesale brands, including Jer’s Chocolates, Anastasia Confections, Droga Chocolates and Williams & Bennett. Levan is really like a kid in a candy store. “I can’t do things I’m not passionate about. And when I’m passionate about something, it drives me. I’m very passionate about the chocolate business.”

52

INDULGE | NOVEMBER 2016 | www.miamiindulge.com

SWEET PHILANTHROPY Besides tending to the making and tasting of chocolates, Levan is very involved in supporting the arts. He is on the board of the Broward Performing Arts Foundation and the Nova Southeastern University Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, and is the founding chairman of Business for the Arts of Broward, an initiative to get the business community involved in the arts. Hoffman’s has been directly involved in raising the bar for art and culture by donating a percentage of sales from its limited-edition Art Bars Collection of chocolate bars, featuring package designs from six local artists. The company also works with Jason Taylor Foundation’s Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, creating a signature Blue Apple caramel apple and donating a percentage of sales during the month of April (National Poetry Month) to the foundation.

‘I can’t do things I’m not passionate about. I’m very passionate about chocolate.’ Although Levan is focused on growing his chocolate business, he has now set his sights on another comfort-food favorite: pizza. He recently signed a deal to introduce fast-casual pizza chain MOD to central and southern Florida. Over the next seven years, he plans to open 50 or more MOD locations from Miami to Tampa. When it comes to leading a candy company, Levan acknowledged that the role requires a mix of business and pleasure. “Every family trip includes a stop at a local chocolate company,” he said. “I have to know what the competition is up to.” WORDS BY SARA FIEDELHOLTZ / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK GARCIA

WINTER WONDERLAND

From Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, Hoffman’s Chocolates continues a tradition started by Paul Hoffman 25 years ago. It turns the space behind its Greenacres factory into a winter wonderland with more than 75,000 holiday lights. Drs. Narendra & Rekha Kini

Two Miami physicians with an education in giving back show how compassion and empathy go beyond bedside manners.

A

sk Dr. Narendra Kini about the best gift he ever received, and he has a quick answer. It’s not any possession — no bike when he was a kid or some new electronic gizmo. The gift was a “Southern gentleman” who, years ago, figured out that Kini needed help. Kini had just moved to America as a young pediatrician. He had been raised in West Africa by parents who were from India, meaning he had always been a cultural fish-out-of-water. But he knew nothing about being American. So that’s when John Vice, the CEO of the children’s hospital where Kini was working, decided to become his mentor. “He taught me to listen carefully and think before you act,” Kini recalled. “And now his lessons guide everything I do.” Now, Kini finds himself in a position to become that same kind of mentor, as president and CEO of Miami Children’s Health System. He has an ingrained belief that every day ought to be about giving back, and he’s got a partner in it. His wife, South Miami internist Dr. Rekha Kini, grew up that way, too.

ALWAYS GIVING The couple met 25 years ago, when Narendra Kini went on a vacation to India. A month later they had plans to marry. They shared a basic tenet that their families believed, something that came from Rekha Kini’s grandfather, who had built the town where she lived. Her grandfather opened a community bakery for those who couldn’t afford bread, and he paid for scholarships for kids who otherwise couldn’t go to school. “I was taught early on that if you were lucky enough in life to get everything you need, you should help others, too,” Rekha Kini said. Which is what Narendra Kini was thinking when, early on in his career, he decided to make daily visits to the home of one of his patients. The boy’s name was Onen: a 5½-year-old with a massive tumor in his stomach. It was untreatable. The family were refugees from Ethiopia, with no family or friends nearby. “I think in my heart I may have given them more comfort,” he said. “It was a journey for four months before he passed. There was nothing I could do to treat him, but I just thought maybe coming there could help.” NEXT GENERATION The comfort and companionship he brought to that family, he said, is the best gift he’s ever given. And now the Kinis want to put their two boys, 10 and 12, in a position to do the same. They were both born in Wisconsin — “as American as they come,” Narendra Kini said — and have never really wanted for anything. So Rekha Kini makes sure to expose them to those who do. Their oldest son volunteers at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, at first running the coffee and cookie cart and then graduating to the IT help desk. RIVER REVIVAL

From spicy-sweet cocktails to truffletopped steaks, here’s where to go — and what to order! — during a progressive dinner down the Miami River.

W

ith its trendy vibes, beautiful people and yacht-filled waters, the Miami River has quickly become one of the Magic City’s most ravedabout social scenes. Whether you arrive by boat, on foot or in an Uber, you’ll find a haven of sexy seafood spots, sophisticated bars, authentic Spanish restaurants and more. Go for the food, but stay for … well, everything. Next time you want to plan a night out on the town, follow our guide and turn your evening into a progressive dinner with many stops along the way. Here’s where to go and exactly what you should be having at each place. Bon appétit! JAMON IBERICO PATA NEGRA RESTAURANT Riverside Start your night with a charcuterie plate from Jamón Ibérico Pata Negra, where chef/owner Felipe Pérez presides over the kitchen and cozy dining room. Order the Iberian Platter: a mix of Spanish cheeses and cured ham, including shavings from Spain’s famed black-footed Iberian pigs. Pérez loves the elevated, nutty flavor that comes from these acorn-fed pigs — so much that he even named his restaurant after them. “The Black Iberian pig is one of Spain’s most valued culinary treasures,” Pérez said. “Prosciutto and other forms of ham just don’t compare.” 10 Southwest South River Drive, Miami; 305-324-1111; patanegrarestaurant.com.

the life It takes an accomplished eater to complete our progressive meal along the Miami River, starting with charcuterie at Jamon Iberico Pata Negra (previous page), moving on to a plate of oysters at River Yacht Club, pausing for a jalapeño-infused cocktail at American Social, plowing through a dry-aged rib-eye at Zuma and finishing on a square of tiramisu at Il Gabbiano.

AMERICAN SOCIAL Brickell There are few things we love more in Miami than a sexy lounge, a good water view and a cool cocktail with a kick. Fortunately, at American Social, we get all three. A mix of lime juice, agave nectar, a fresh watermelon slice and three house-made concoctions — jalapeño-infused tequila and cucumber and watermelon purées — the La Sandia, which was added to the new cocktail menu this summer, was inspired by Beverage Director Andrea Lanza’s passion for fusing sweet and spicy. “Take a sip, and you immediately get a zest of spice from the tequila, followed by the lush sweetness of watermelon,” he said. “Then, as it hits the back of your mouth, a pop of cucumber adds a cooling and refreshing balance. Sip, savor and repeat!” 690 Southwest First Court, Miami; 305-223-7004; americansocialbar.com.

INDULGE | NOVEMBER 2016 | www.miamiindulge.com

ZUMA Downtown At Zuma, a dish doesn’t just become a signature menu item — guests have to absolutely love it. That’s the case with chef Albert Diaz’s hearty bone-in rib-eye steak. Dry-aged for 40 days, the nutty flavor of this heavenly hunk of grain-fed Prime Angus beef is further enhanced by wasabi, truffle soy sauce and fresh truffle, conveniently shaved tableside. “The most important part of preparing this dish is getting a nice sear on the steak from our robata grill,” Diaz said. “By slowly cooking it over Japanese bincho charcoal, we caramelize the crust of the steak, lock in its flavor and get a delicious fatty seal with a subtle smoky finish.” What’s not to love? 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami; 305-577-0277; zumarestaurant.com.

IL GABBIANO Downtown It’s hard to find any Italian restaurant without tiramisu on the menu, but no one does it quite like Miami finedining staple Il Gabbiano. Order a nice shot of creamy espresso and pair it with this delicate dessert: a beautiful display of Belgian dark chocolate, airy ladyfingers imported from Italy, mascarpone cheese, espresso and a few secret ingredients that give it that familiar pinch of gusto. Try to ask Manager and partner Luigi Tullio just what those secrets are, however, and he’ll keep it mum. “The recipe came from the Italian grandmother of one of our owners. If I tell you all of the ingredients, she’ll kill me.” 335 South Biscayne Boulevard, Miami; 305-373-0063; ilgabbianomia.com. WORDS BY JENNIFER AGRESS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZAK BENNETT

RIVER YACHT CLUB, AMERICAN SOCIAL (COURTESY)

RIVER YACHT CLUB Brickell On the water, oysters are a must. Pair them with River Yacht Club’s swanky nautical setting and idyllic views, and they’re simply unbeatable. The second stop on your journey along the Miami River, this hot new spot offers a daily selection of East and West Coast oysters. Focusing on the flavor of the oyster itself, this dish includes only the highest-quality half-shells — from drier, less-fatty Kusshi to crisp-clean Beausoleils — and serves them with River Yacht Club’s habanero, chile-lime and mignonette sauces. “The more ‘ocean-y’ the flavor, the better they are in my book,” said Stephane Dupoux, CEO of Dupoux Partners, one of the masterminds behind RYC. “There is no better way to have it than with a crusty baguette, slathered in salted butter, and a glass of very chilled Sancerre.” 401 Southwest Third Avenue, Miami; 305-200-5716; riveryachtclub.com.

TALKIN’

TURKEY What happens when you ask Miami’s most talked-about fine-dining chef to create a Thanksgiving dish that any home cook can master? A turkey leg to remember, that’s what. WORDS BY EVAN S. BENN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FELIPE CUEVAS

S

ometimes, when a chef achieves the kind of runaway success that Bradley Kilgore has — multiple four-star newspaper reviews, national magazine covers, James Beard Award nominations — they tend to take their foot off the pedal, so to speak. Not Kilgore. The young, critically acclaimed chef-owner of Alter in Wynwood recently lifted the curtain on Brava by Brad Kilgore, his elegant new restaurant in the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami. He’s joined in the kitchen there by his wife, pastry chef

Soraya Kilgore, who is crafting preand post-theater sweets like Nutella ganache with hazelnut praline. And Kilgore continues to support local farmers and charity food organizations like Slow Food Miami. In fact, we were so impressed with his winning dish from Slow Food’s Freshest Night Out event earlier this summer — rabbit confit with smoked-oyster sabayon — that we asked him to develop a Thanksgiving recipe for INDULGE readers that was uniquely Kilgore but also approachable for home cooks. What Kilgore came up with — Honey Szechuan Glazed Turkey Legs — is everything we’ve come to

love about his cooking: an American classic with a twist. The recipe starts with a bourbon brine; Kilgore recommends using good-quality bourbon, but save the top-shelf stuff for sipping with dinner. It finishes with roasted turkey legs sauced in a zippy chile-peppercorn glaze. “It’s not too complicated, so even a novice cook can go after the challenge,” Kilgore explained. “And it brings in just a hint of heat, which is rarely found during Thanksgiving dinner. Plus, basting with melted butter and honey is always fun!” Brava by Brad Kilgore, 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami; 305-949-6722; arshtcenter.org.

Meet the chef BRADLEY KILGORE, 30, was born and raised in Kansas City. He worked and trained in Denver, Italy and Chicago before planting his flag in Miami. He got his start here at Azul at the Mandarin Oriental before becoming executive chef of Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s J&G Grill at the St. Regis Bal Harbour. He and his team at J&G Grill earned a four-star review from the Miami Herald (it was the newspaper’s only four-star restaurant in 2014). Kilgore opened Alter in Wynwood last year, receiving another four-star Herald review. The James Beard Foundation nominated Kilgore for Rising Star Chef of the Year in 2016, and Food & Wine magazine named him one of the country’s Best New Chefs. This fall, he opened Brava by Brad Kilgore at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

TURKEY LEGS AND GLAZE 2-4 organic free-range turkey legs 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons coarse sea salt 2 tablespoons cracked black pepper 1¹∕³ cups honey 1 cup unsalted butter 6 tablespoons cracked szechuan peppercorns 1 serrano chile, split lengthwise 6 sprigs thyme 1 lemon, halved and seeded 1. Combine all brine ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until salt is dissolved. Remove brine from heat and refrigerate until cold, about 1 hour. 2. Place turkey legs into the bourbon-maple brine; cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours and up to 1 day. 3. Remove turkey legs from brine. Rub all over with a light coating of vegetable oil, then season with 1 tablespoon each of sea salt and black pepper. 4. Roast turkey legs at 250 degrees for about 1½ hours, until internal temperature reaches 145150 degrees. Crank the heat to 375 degrees and continue to roast until skin turns light golden brown, about 15 minutes. 5. Add honey and butter to a large nonstick saute pan over medium heat. Once melted, add peppercorns, chile, thyme and remaining tablespoon each of sea salt and black pepper. Add turkey legs to pan, and use a large spoon to baste the legs with the sauce until the sauce has thickened and become deep golden brown. Squeeze lemon juice into pan and baste a few final times before serving.

HOLIDAYSPIRITS

Don’t show up at a holiday party empty-handed. These bottles will wow your hosts and spread plenty of good cheer.

T

hanksgiving through New Year’s is prime time for cocktail parties and popping bottles of Champagne. But sometimes, the best place for alcohol isn’t in your glass (at least, not right away) but in wrapping paper as you hand it off to your affable host. The best bottled gifts tend to be a bit unusual or rare, and the beverage inside must have the same good taste for which you wish to be recognized. Here are INDULGE’s recommendations to help you conjure your own holiday spirit.

WINE Red: Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon You’ll love this under-the-radar Napa beauty that includes grapes from the same vineyards that go into Hobbs’ $200-plus single-vineyard wines. It tastes rich. $50 at West Kendall Liquors, 10590 North Kendall Drive, Miami. Rosé: Chêne Bleu Rosé A classic South-of-France rosé that makes most others taste like wimpy

white wine. It creates a new category: “Super-Rhône.” $35 at Wolfe’s Wine Shoppe, 124 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables. White: Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Millénaires 1995 Nothing says “cheers” like Champagne, and few bottles are as striking as this all-chardonnay vintage in a gorgeous gift box that recalls the chalk caves where it aged for 21 years. $250 at Abaco Premium Wines, 140 Northeast 39th Street, Suite 206, Miami. SPIRITS Mezcal: Del Maguey Chichicapa From a single remote village in Oaxaca, this is the ultimate craft spirit: smooth and richly textured. In the words of Del Maguey founder Ron Cooper: “You don’t find mezcal. It finds you.” Prepare to be found. $74 at Total Wine & More, multiple locations. Rum: Ron Abuelo Centuria Rums aged up to 30 years in casks formerly used for Jack Daniels meld together into a dazzling sipping spirit. $154 at Sunset Corners, 8701 Southwest 72nd Street, Miami.

Scotch: Glenmorangie Signet Single Malt Stillmaster Dr. Bill Lumsden says that Signet contains whiskies from 14 to 40 years old. On first sniff, aromas of chocolate toffee shortbread rise from the dram. On the palate, it’s sheer heaven. $216 at Vintage Liquor & Wine Bar, 3301 Northeast First Avenue, Miami. BEER Father Francisco Belgian Golden Ale: Wynwood Brewing Co. Watch the party come to you when you show up with a 64-ounce growler of seasonal local beer poured directly from the brewery’s taps. $22 at Wynwood Brewing Co., 565 Northwest 24th Street, Miami. PER’LA COFFEE ROASTERS Paul Massard and Chris Nolte became friends as undergrads at the University of Miami. Massard went into the coffee business while Nolte pursued a career in finance and marketing. Last year, they decided to join forces to fill what they saw as a coffee gap. “In the United States, coffee is an all-day beverage, but we didn’t think the quality was up to the potential market,” Nolte explained. Massard creates seasonal blends that Nolte markets. Even without a brickand-mortar shop, Per’la is winning over South Florida’s most discerning coffee critics. drinkperla.com. VERO WATER You have probably consumed Vero Water, even if you didn’t know it. More and more restaurants in Miami and across the country are pouring (and cooking with) house-filtered still and sparkling water. Many of them use an innovative device developed by South Florida’s Vero Water. “We can filter local water with a new technology that removes impurities but doesn’t strip it of beneficial minerals,” Vero co-founder Michael Servetnick said. “With easily cleaned, reusable bottles, chefs and consumers can go green with greattasting water.” verowater.com. KELVIN NATURAL SLUSH COMPANY When two former attorneys from New York bought a food truck and went retro with a contemporary twist on the slushy drinks from their childhood, they realized they had a concept whose time had come. But New York’s slush season is short, so the founders of Kelvin Natural Slush Co. set their sights south. “They brought the concept to Miami, where you can have frozen drinks year-round,” said Nick Paton, the company’s Florida sales director and a longtime Miami food-and-beverage professional. Kelvin’s vegan, glutenfree, organic, kosher and downright delicious slushes are now part of cocktails at some of South Florida’s best bars and restaurants. And they’re equally enjoyable without any booze. kelvinslush.com. —LF

{NEIGHBORHOOD}

COCONUT GROVE A quaint village hugging the coast of Biscayne Bay, Coconut Grove, originally settled in 1825, is considered Miami’s oldest neighborhood. Perhaps because of its long history, the Grove has had a shape-shifting reputation from bohemian enclave to hotspot and back again — and it always seems to be on the brink of a renaissance. The latest resurgence is of the foodie variety, with critically acclaimed openings of ambitious restaurants Ariete and Glass & Vine, as well as branches of locally loved Panther Coffee and Harry’s Pizzeria. With cultural treasures like Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, picturesque parks and marinas lining the bay, and restaurants and shops that have become institutions — Greenstreet Café, Jaguar Ceviche Spoon Bar, Ramona La Rue, TKS Miami — Coconut Grove has a distinctive character that Miamians cherish and wish to preserve.

David Martin founded Coconut Grove-based development firm Terra Group with his father, Pedro, in 2001. With projects stretching from Weston to Miami Beach, Terra has recently zeroed in on Coconut Grove, teaming up with star architects Rem Koolhaas on Park Grove and Bjarke Ingels on the Grove at Grand Bay, both condominium developments. Martin also is working on a more personal project, building a new home in the Grove to enjoy with his wife, Christine, and their two young children. “I love that it’s not a fabricated neighborhood,” Martin said. “It’s evolved over the last 100 years to become what it is today. There’s the beautiful tree canopy. It’s a peaceful and tranquil place.” So how does a developer honor the history of a neighborhood while still moving forward? “You have to stay true to the core mission,” Martin said. He does so by building boutique, low-density condos and supporting the local community philanthropically. He likens Coconut Grove to an ancient proverb: “If a tree’s roots are deep, you don’t have to worry about the wind.”

They’re designed to emulate private penthouses with four bedrooms and four bathrooms while maintaining the amenities of a luxury resort. These suites, which start at $8,000 a night and can be combined to accommodate up to 20 guests, feature a main living room — ideal for lounging — and four balconies with sweeping ocean views. Currently under construction: a standalone, five-bedroom presidential villa that will span three stories.

SEAS

With a new season of cruising upon us, here’s a rundown of the latest and greatest ships sailing from South Florida and beyond.

I

f there’s any city that knows the pleasure of getting out on the water, it’s Miami. Veteran and first-time cruisers alike are on the lookout for the newest ships, greatest onboard luxuries and best shore excursions. INDULGE has done the research, crunched the numbers and created this guide to kick off another season at sea.

NEW SHIPS Luxury connoisseurs have another big-ticket purchase to add to their list of Birkins and Bentleys, only this one is experiential — a sail on the new, $450-million Regent Seven Seas Explorer. There are more impressive numbers around every corner: a 1.36 guest-to-crew ratio for up to 750 passengers, and 52,000 square feet of private balconies, an industry high, since the oversized amenity adjoins all 375 suites. The opulence culminates in the 4,443-squarefoot Regent Suite, which boasts an in-room, full-works spa — a first for a cruise ship. It features all the bells and whistles of the ship’s main Canyon Ranch SpaClub (sauna, heated chaises), but departs in its private hot tub

with ocean views and exclusive, 80-minute treatments curated by Red Flower with Natura Bissé products. Pamper away thanks to the line’s all-inclusive fare structure. When these inner-sanctum guests become bored with napping in their Savoir king bed and playing “Chopsticks” on the one-of-a-kind Steinway piano, they can venture to Chartreuse or Pacific Rim for a lobster dinner. The former’s poached French Brittany Blue Tail drips in the shellfish’s roe butter, while the latter’s tempurafried, Canadian-caught variety comes with orange ponzu and shiso. The Seven Seas Explorer arrives here in early December for several Caribbean cruises before crossing the Panama Canal for the West Coast. Wellness guru Dr. Andrew Weil and up to 599 other passengers will embark on Seabourn Encore’s maiden voyage in January. They’ll be ensconced in 300 suites sized up to 1,300 square feet with private balconies up to 906 square feet.

the life

Clockwise from above, the new Seabourn Encore makes its maiden voyage in January; guests can stretch out in a duplex lounge aboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2; the new Crystal Mozart is a game-changer in the luxury river-cruise market; a duplex bedroom on the Queen Mary 2.

Weil’s new partnership with the Onboard Spa by Steiner, yet another industry-wide foray, will soon be rolled out to all Seabourn vessels. His annual lectures, as well as yoga and meditation instruction by full-time wellness guides, enhance SkinCeuticals spa services. Longtime partner Molton Brown has developed Seabourn Signature Scents. But one doesn’t need to board to experience the collection’s basil and vetiver, and samphire and eucalyptus bath products. Simply head to the maker’s stores or website. Two more heavy hitters contributed to the Encore: designer Adam D. Tihany’s bespoke interiors awash in mahogany and brass, and the Grill by Thomas Keller for those treasured classics that never tire like Caesar salad dressed tableside, followed by lobster thermidor and ice cream sundaes. Though the restaurant operates throughout the fleet, Encore claims the adults-only Retreat to chill below a blossom-shaped canopy between whirlpool dips. For a daily fee, reserve a tricked-out cabana for two. Named for the Austrian composer, Crystal Mozart inaugurates the line’s river cruises with four more ships due through 2017. The luxury game-changer ticks off several superlatives in the category, from the Danube River’s largest ship at 75 feet wide by nearly 400 feet long, to a 91-person staff for 158 passengers. All-suite accommodations with 40-inch flat-screen TVs and iPads to tap for butler service max out at 883 square feet with two bedrooms — naturally, the biggest room floating down a river. Swim in the spa’s indoor pool, sightsee on complimentary electronic bikes and stroll the

wraparound promenade. The rooftop deck’s retractable bar for sundowners and stargazing gives new meaning to the pop-up phenomenon. Fans of Holland America Line should zero in on its new, 2,650-passenger ms Koningsdam. Its Tihany touches and amenities that are unique to the fleet include the bi-level Greenhouse Spa’s barbershop and medical treatments such as acupuncture and Thermage radiofrequency facials. Only here, too, guests can take an aromatherapy steam bath and lengthen their lashes when sailing with the line. UPGRADES AND RENOVATIONS On this year’s 80th anniversary of the original Queen Mary, Cunard unveiled the $132-million refit of Queen Mary 2. Design and history enthusiasts easily spot the ships’ correlation, especially Art Deco décor, a flurry of bronze, brass and streamlined furniture. Top-tier Queens Grill and Princess Grill suites, as well as their respective restaurants and lounges where passengers can now dine à la carte at no set time, have been renovated. Play “the princess and the pea” with nine types of pillows, one of many perks provided by White Star Service Academy graduates.

Brittania Club staterooms also got a makeover and additional accommodations, including a new category for solo travelers, like your favorite tía. Cabins display architecture photographer Paul Ward’s commissioned series of historic Cunard buildings in New York and the U.K. Unique for its pooch quarters and legacy — the original Queen Mary installed a Liverpool lamppost for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s dogs to do their business — the ship doubled kennels to 24 and added an authentic New York City fire hydrant so American canines wouldn’t be confused. Another original gem, the whitetablecloth Verandah, resurfaces for guests to sup on Gallic dishes like beef bourguignon and tarts baked with French Agen prunes and Armagnac. Holland America Line is midway through a $300-million refurbishment that wraps up next year. Suite upgrades focus on its Signature, Vista and R-Class vessels. New seating fills living rooms, and quartz slabs top dressers and tables. Tech additions range from LED lights to USB outlets embedded in headboards. All-new baths incorporate cream and blue glass tiles and stone for a crisp, serene setting that emanates throughout the whole redesign. Suite-stayers receive little extras like loaner binoculars and plusher bathrobes.

the life Clockwise from right, chef Andy Matsuda collaborated with Holland America for Tamarind restaurant aboard the ms Konigsdam; a look at the Crystal Esprit, one of the line’s luxury river yachts; the ms Konigsdam’s Pinnacle Suites have separate dining areas; Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery has a custom space for ms Konigsdam guests to blend their own wines.

DRINKING AND DINING Many cruises host wine blending seminars, but only Holland America’s ms Koningsdam devotes a custom space to the sold-out activity. Participants work with barrels rather than bottles, which also sets it apart, just as if they were at program partner Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington. Besides being the state’s oldest winery and a master blender, it was selected since both brands are based there. Complement your creation with duck cassoulet at the ship’s French brasserie, Sel de Mer, or with a killer lobster tempura roll at Tamarind’s sushi bar.

NEW DESTINATIONS Norwegian’s $400-million investment across its fleet doesn’t stop at polished interiors and hip eateries by the likes of the Pubbelly Boys. The line is acquiring and sprucing up its private islands à la Richard Branson and Johnny Depp. Harvest Caye with Belize’s first pier for cruise-ship dockage debuts in November. Non-sand lovers can relax since it’s a straight shot for private villas and a 15,000-square-foot pool with a swim-up bar. When passengers aren’t exploring Mayan ruins, they’re invited to learn about manatees and scarlet macaws, which are being saved by the on-site aviary’s breed-and-release program. Bahamas cruises stop at the immensely improved Great Stirrup Cay. Snorkel through its marine sculpture garden and cruise the half-mile boardwalk straddling the ocean and 10-acre beach.

ENTERTAINMENT While their friends are stuck in holiday traffic back in Miami, lucky passengers aboard Celebrity Cruises’ Eclipse, Equinox, Reflection and Summit ships will be treated to a familyfriendly, private concert by Demi Lovato in St. Maarten on December 28. Like Cher, the all-around entertainer who’s made a name far beyond music will belt out her hits (“Neon Lights,” “Heart Attack”) with that famously wideranging mezzo-soprano voice. General admission and VIP tickets are for sale on a first-come firstserved basis, so book before boarding. UP IN THE AIR Beyond conquering oceans and rivers, Crystal Cruises expanded to the skies. Next year, Crystal AirCruises introduces an 88-passenger Boeing 777-200LR. Everyone flies first-class in flat beds and dines on fare by Michelin-starred chefs during 14- and 28-day excursions.

Meanwhile, up to a dozen cruise-goers can hop on the line’s Bombardier Express XRS for worldwide ports even in the most faraway locales. The two-cabin design efficiently accommodates an oven for gourmet meals, plus work and entertainment spaces. It’s the perfect mode of transportation to begin the Arctic Northwest Passage, where adventurous travelers have a front-row seat for the frozen wilderness, and a 94-day, “ultimate” South American itinerary from Antarctica to the Amazon in 2017. Name your price Find the fine watch that’s right for you, at any cost.

Yes, a smartphone can tell time accurately. So can an inexpensive digital watch from a discount store. Yet there are people who seek out fine mechanical watches that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Why? There are many reasons. “The purchaser understands the intricacies of watchmaking,” said Jono King, owner of King Jewelers. “Some watches have hundreds of parts in just the movement, and complications touched from start to finish by just one master watchmaker.”

“It often takes six to eight months to make a fine watch,” said Ed Dikes, CEO of Weston Jewelers. “It’s something that can be handed down to future generations,” “In an age where almost everything is digital, a fine watch is still crafted by hand and can still be accurate a hundred years from now,” said Chris Haake, COO of Morays Jewelers. “Buying a fine watch is like buying a piece of artwork,” said Jeff Newbauer, who owns Kirk Jewelers with his sister, Allison Strongin. “And it provides a sense of accomplishment.”

Here are a few outstanding watches the jewelers recommend in different price categories. UNDER $5,000 “TAG Heuer is strong in that price range,” Haake said. Some TAG examples: The Aquaracer, Carrera and the Formula 1. TAG also gets a nod from Eva Hartling of Mayors Jewelers, who likes the Link Lady in this category. “It’s brand new,” she said. “It’s been a classic style, but it’s been completely redesigned.” “The Tudor brand,” recommended Newbauer. A model for women:

The Black Bay 36. “The Bell & Ross BR123, and vintage watches,” King said of the under-$5,000 category. “Tudor also makes extremely fine-quality timepieces in that range. Dietrich is an extremely good value with great-looking watches.” Dikes suggested Baume & Mercier watches in this price range. “They make beautiful watches for both ladies and men, and they all have Swiss movements,” he said. Hartling echoed the Baume & Mercier sentiment, noting her excitement for the brand’s new

‘Buying a watch is like buying a piece of artwork. It provides a sense of accomplishment,’ said Jeff Newbauer of Kirk Jewelers. model, Petite Promesse. “It’s exciting that you can now get a beautiful Swiss timepiece for a very affordable price,” she said. $5,000 TO $25,000 Many Rolex models fall into this price category, Newbauer said. He also likes the Nautilus 5711/1A for men and the Nautilus 7118/1A for women by Patek Philippe. “It’s a huge price range,” said Haake, recommending models from Omega, Breitling and Audemars Piguet. “Cartier’s new Clé for women,” Hartling suggested. “It’s a beautiful

style, and they recently came out with a stainless-steel version. For men, the IWC Big Pilot and the limited-edition Antoine de SaintExupéry, named for the French author who wrote ‘The Little Prince.’” $25,000 TO $100,000 For something unusual in this category, Newbauer recommends the Rolex Daytona Platinum, made of solid platinum. “It’s very special,” he said. A number of Breguets fall into this range, King said. He also recommended the Harry Winston brand.

“In the models for ladies, they use flawless diamonds and set the table of each stone in the same direction so they all show the same scintillation,” King said. $100,000-PLUS “These are the ultimate timepieces, sought after by collectors,” Hartling said. “They have the most sophisticated complications.” “For that price, you can get a tourbillon,” Dikes said. What is a tourbillon? It’s a specialized movement developed in the late 18th century by AbrahamLouis Breguet that actually counters

the effects of gravity. Collectors lust after them, and the watch’s mechanisms are usually visible on the outside so owners can show them off. And, of course, there’s status. “A watch in that price range is something for a person who wants something no one else can own,” Haake said. “It might have grand complications like a perpetual calendar — as long as you keep the watch wound, it will be accurate for 100 years — or a minute repeater that will strike the hours and the minutes like a chime clock.” WORDS BY JANA SOELDNER DANGER

Designs for all time For the collector who has the classics covered, catch attention with head-turning watch styles.

84

Fine watches often have classic, timeless designs. But sometimes, buyers want something different that will turn heads and stand out. The SevenFriday collection does just that, said Chris Haake, COO of Morays Jewelers. It features models with squareish faces and an open display of visual complications. “They don’t look like anything else,” Haake added. “Putting ceramic together with composites is hot right now,” said Ed Dikes, CEO of Weston Jewelers. “There are also carbon fiber dials and other components that you can match to the interior of your car.” Bvlgari’s Serpenti collection has bracelets that resemble snakes, Dikes added. The bracelet of one model

is covered with emeralds to conjure green snakeskin, and the serpent’s mouth opens to reveal the timepiece. Not a fan of snakes? Cartier’s Balloon Bleu has a crown that juts out of the watch to look like a balloon. Dietrich offers a model with a uniquely shaped case, said Jono King, owner of King Jewelers. “It also has a skeleton dial that allows the wearer to appreciate the inner workings of the watch. There’s nothing else like it out there.” Jeff Newbauer, who owns Kirk Jewelers with his sister, Allison Strongin, suggested Tudor’s Black Bay Bronze. “It’s cutting-edge, made to look like an old aviator watch,” he said. “It comes with an aged brown leather or mustard colored strap. It

has a rustic feel, and the bronze will patina over time, so each watch will look different than every other one.” The TAG Heuer 01 has a titanium carbide-coated steel case made with multiple parts that can fit together in different ways. “It’s a modular approach so there can be many variations to a model,” Newbauer said. Harry Winston offers an Opus series model with discs that rotate in and out. “It looks like a jukebox player,” Haake said. TAG Heuer has a new model in its Monza Race Car Series. “The race car series dates back to 1976, so it’s the 40th anniversary,” said Eva Hartling of Mayors Jewelers. “The new one is a redesign of a classic TAG from 1930. It has a cushion

case with rounded sides and a black dial and case, and a leather strap that are reminiscent of race car equipment.” For those who prefer a minimalist, understated look, there’s the squarefaced Nomos Glashutte. “Some designers try to make watches that are ornate and cram all kinds of things onto the dial,” Haake said. “This brand took a step back and said, ‘How can we make it cleaner?’” For watch aficionados on the other end of the spectrum, those who prefer bling galore, there’s Patek Philippe’s 4948G. “It’s completely encrusted with 388 diamonds,” Newbauer said. “Even the pin buckle is covered with diamonds.”

Add a splash of color Who said watches need to be limited to a few basic color schemes?

Color can add pizzazz to a fine watch. Blue is big. “Blue is what they’re calling the new black,” said Jono King, owner of King Jewelers. “It’s been popular for a long time, but it’s being used now on a much grander scale for both dials and straps. It gives a little pop, but it’s still very elegant, and can even be worn with a tuxedo.” “Blue was once a novelty, but now it’s part of core collections,” said Chris Haake, COO of Morays Jewelers. Perhaps that’s because it’s so versatile. “Blue can match jeans or a beautiful suit,” said Ed Dikes, CEO of Weston Jewelers. For women who want to combine color and gemstones, a blue-dialed Vacheron Constantin Overseas model is an option. “It has a very eye-catching diamond bezel,” said Eva Hartling of Mayors Jewelers. There are other color possibilities. “The Rolex Submariner can come with a green dial and a green bezel,” Dikes said. “We call it The Hulk. It’s very sought after and hard to find.” The Rolex Daytona is available with an electric green dial. “It really pops,” said Jeff Newbauer, who owns Kirk Jewelers with his sister, Allison Strongin. “And the Rolex Yachtmaster can come with a chocolate brown dial.” STRAPS Color doesn’t stop with the head of the watch. “There’s much more attention to detail now,” Haake said. “A blue watch will have a blue strap with stitching. Omega’s Seamaster Planet Ocean is available with a black rubber strap with orange stitching. Straps aren’t an

afterthought anymore, and a new strap is a way to give a watch a fresh new look.” Baume & Mercier’s Petite Promesse can come with either a blue or an orange leather bracelet. “It wraps around and is meant to be worn with other bracelets,” Hartling said. “It’s become very trendy for men to take the straps off their watches and put on a nato or perlon strap,” Newbauer said. “You can get them in colors to match the dials. It’s a way for your watch to have a lot of different personalities.” METALS Metals can be a component in a color scheme. Sometimes just a touch can be enough, as with TAG Heuer’s Carrera model for women that has a navy blue dial with rose gold accents. “It comes with a quilted navy leather strap,” Hartling said. While rose gold remains extremely fashionable, there’s been a move back toward yellow gold, which had dropped off in popularity for a while. Rolex has a yellow gold model with a champagne-colored dial that Newbauer expects to appeal to many watch lovers. “It’s a monochromatic look that’s very flashy,” he said. Two-tone watches that combine yellow gold and stainless steel are another option. “It’s a way to get the look of gold without the full price,” Haake said. Even more of a mix: “Yellow gold, white gold and rose gold are all popular now, and people are wearing all three colors in the same piece,” Dikes said. “It was a trend years ago, and it’s come back.” WORDS BY JANA SOELDNER DANGER

Find your perfect accent

The right piece of jewelry can make a lasting statement or serve as a subtle accessory. We love jewelry for its versatility — the finishing touch to an elegant fashion ensemble, or a way to add color and fun to a casual outfit of jeans and a T-shirt. What are some trends to watch for this gift-giving season?

FOR MEN “Men are amping up their bracelet game with the European look of stacking their watches with a couple of bracelets — leather braids or beads,” Hartling said. “Layering different bracelets of gold, leather and hemp is popular with men, and they’re wearing more rings, sometimes on their middle fingers,” Strongin said. “They’re also piercing both ears instead of just one, with diamonds or small hoops.” “Men are still pairing bracelets with their watches, and bracelets made of carbon fiber beads appeal to watch enthusiasts,” King said. Cuff links are fashionable, but they don’t have to be formal. “Mismatching cuff links is a playful look,” Hartling said. “Some men are following a trend from Europe,” Dikes said. “They wear beautiful cuffed shirts, but without ties.” WORDS BY JANA SOELDNER DANGER

FOR WOMEN “Gold is always popular, but this year we’re showing a lot of black rhodium,” said Allison Strongin, who owns Kirk Jewelers with her brother, Jeff Newbauer. “We’re showing it with black diamonds, chocolate diamonds and rough stones.” “Wide-cuffed bracelets are still stylish,” said Ed Dikes, CEO of Weston Jewelers. “Long colorful necklaces, 30 inches or more, are a trend. Women wrap them around once or twice.” Some of the soughtafter stones: green and black onyx and, not surprisingly, diamonds. “Long, flowing earrings and other things that move with the body are popular, and large cocktail rings are still in,” said Jono King, owner of King Jewelers. “Although diamonds will always be timeless, women now are wearing a lot of color. It’s a nice way to express your personal artistic flair. Emeralds are very sought-after.” “There’s a lot of demand for yellow gold jewelry this season,” said Eva Hartling of Mayors Jewelers. “It has to do with the ’70s look, and it goes with the shades of burgundy and emerald green that we’re seeing for fall. Pearls are making a comeback, but they’re worn differently. Instead of a single strand, they’re layered with multiple necklaces. There’s also demand for long pendant necklaces, which are great for layering.” “Thin, stackable rings in different materials and colors make great gifts,

because you can get them one or two at a time and build a collection,” Strongin said. “Two-tone rings, bracelets and earrings that combine white gold and rose gold are in style. So are pink stones paired with rose gold. It’s even transferring into the bridal market.” “Custom work is a big trend,” said Chris Haake, COO of Morays Jewelers. “With 3D technology, if you can think it, the jeweler can make it.”

Home for the Holıdays

Whether you dream of a white Christmas or a tropical Thanksgiving, in Miami you can have it all. (Well, maybe not a truly white Christmas, but late fall’s temperature dip is a welcome change indeed.) This is one of those times of year when we’re so fortunate to call South Florida home. With another hurricane season in our rearview and a busy social season already ramping up, take a minute now to appreciate all we have, right here, at our fingertips and in our back yards. Here, we celebrate our unique community of makers and thinkers and movers and shakers. And we thank those who choose to give back. Because without their gifts, Miami would not be the home it is.

COOL, CALM &

CONNECTED Meet the Grutmans: Nightclub owner and restaurateur David and fashion model Isabela are Miami Beach royalty who know how to give back — and how to throw a great party. WORDS BY EVAN S. BENN STYLING BY CLAUDIA MIYAR

It’s lunchtime, and David Grutman’s personal chef is making chicken — again. Boneless, skinless, white-meat chicken cooked without oil or butter, served with a side of broccoli. Grutman groans in mock protest. “It’s not me who buys the chicken so you can be healthy,” the chef banters back, craning his neck toward the other side of the kitchen. Isabela Rangel — who married Grutman in April and who buys the chicken so he can be healthy — stands with a knowing smile. Clean living has played a big role in helping Grutman supercharge his Miami business empire. The 42-year-old owner of top-grossing Miami Beach nightclubs LIV and Story branched out into the restaurant business late last year, opening pan-Asian restaurant Komodo in Brickell. The three-story behemoth pulses with all the energy, beautiful people and A-list celebrities as one of Grutman’s clubs. And he’s not done. Up next? “Hotelier,” Grutman said. “I want people to eat in my restaurants, party in my clubs and sleep in my hotels. That will happen.” Grutman traded in the alcohol-fueled life of a nightclub guy for a gym membership and a no-smoking policy around his 40th birthday, not long before he met Rangel. He credits her support and motivation for keeping him on a focused path. And even though he likes to joke about his lean-protein diet, he knows he doesn’t have it so bad. “You swear to me there’s no butter in here? I don’t believe you,” Grutman presses the chef, who holds up a jar of his secret ingredient — a purée of onions and garlic that boosts the chicken with flavor. The Grutmans’ Sunset Islands waterfront mansion, which they share with two dogs and a one-eyed cat (Winker), is tailor-made for hosting parties and overnight guests, with conversation pieces of pop art everywhere and an expansive outdoor lounge. “We always have people staying at our house,” he said. “We thrive on having our friends and loved ones around us to hang out and celebrate holidays.” And they don’t let anyone leave empty-handed. One of their favorite giveaway items is a custom Casa Groot home-fragrance spray designed by Boca Raton-based Aroma 360. “We like to have our guests leave with a memory of our home, so we give out branded Casa Groot swag,” he explained.

Grutman seems to have a knack for personalized surprises. He proposed to Isabela, a 24-year-old international model from Brazil who studied fashion design, by having an entire wall in Wynwood painted with her portrait and the words “Isabela, Will You Marry Me?” He drove her to the mural and handed over a can of spray paint for her to mark an X next to “Yes” or “No.” Several months later, they returned to Wynwood Walls with some of their closest friends — Kanye and Kim Kardashian West, Scottie and Larsa Pippen, Ryan Seacrest, Gabrielle Union, Hulk Hogan — for a ceremony performed by Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr., and a killer party. Grutman says the Wynwood mural was the best gift he’s ever given her; his favorite gift from her is a picture book of their memories together. “I love having all of our travels and experiences packaged up in one place,” he said. “It immediately makes me happy.” Besides giving gifts to friends and to each other, the couple is passionate about giving back to the community. They are active with Style Saves, the Miami nonprofit that provides underprivileged kids with school supplies and uniforms. Isabela served on the planning committee for the group’s big back-to-school event this year, and employees of David’s company, MMG, volunteered to deliver collected items to local schools. “We even had LIV dancers help out with the kids’ fashion show,” he said. “They were chasing around the Pink Panther.” During the holidays and throughout the year, Grutman said the most important gifts are those that say thanks. “I love to give thank-you gifts and notes,” he explained. “You have to show gratitude in this crazy industry. I try to personalize all the gifts I give. A gift that strikes home will make someone smile forever.” Isabela Rangel Grutman’s clothing provided by Intermix on Lincoln Road; jewelry and accessories courtesy of Neiman Marcus at Merrick Park; pillows, stool and lantern on Page 91 from Living Alfresco in South Miami.

A colorful Lego display is cut into the walls between their kitchen and living room. While David steals a moment checking emails, Isabela wears an Intermix exclusive Self Portrait overlay lace minidress ($590) and Jose & Maria Barrera pearl earrings ($215).

This page: Isabela cuddles with Kona outside the couple’s home on a canal in Sunset Islands. She’s in a Caroline Constas off-the-shoulder chiffon print dress (similar styles at intermixonline.com) and Fendi “Paradeyes” open-insert round cat-eye sunglasses ($535). Opposite page: David picks out the vinyl, and Isabela is ready to rock in a Self Portrait off-the-shoulder crop jumpsuit ($480) and Valentino medium rockstud leather bracelet ($295).

A framed photograph on their media-room mantle shows the “Will You Marry Me? mural that David had painted in Wynwood as his proposal. Isabela in an Intermix exclusive Drees cross neck knit top ($145) and Missoni Lurex knit pants ($980) with long-beaded tassel clip-on earrings by Oscar de la Renta ($395).

When she travels, “I always have a nude lipstick,” Isabela said. “I don’t usually use too much makeup, so I always have that in all of my bags.” Cushnie Et Ochs velvet floral jumpsuit in blush ($1,795) and Lizzie Fortunato illumination open cuff bracelet ($258).

Cook, carefully flipping once, until tortillas are golden brown and crisp and cheese filling melts, about 5 minutes. 4. Cut quesadillas into wedges. Serve with your favorite GOYA® Salsita variety, if desired. ®

“I

t was amazing Champagne,” recalls Jake, the narrator of Hemingway’s masterpiece The Sun Also Rises. His drinking companion, a Greek count, chimes in: “This wine is too good for toast-drinking. You don’t want to mix emotions up with a wine like that. You lose the taste.” Whether you agree that fine Champagne should be consumed without distraction, or if you prefer to pour bubbly around a gaggle of friends, the fact remains that Champagne is best when served well-chilled. A fitting receptacle for cooling sparkling wine this holiday season is this stunning bucket from Arcahorn. Handmade in Italy of buffalo horn and stainless steel, it features clean, masculine lines, a removable stainless liner and exposed screws. The natural beauty of the horn is juxtaposed against the sleek elegance of the metal. Like Hemingway’s writing, there is nothing superfluous in adornment. It is simple, beautiful and evocative. Amazing. $2,949. Nest Casa at Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Avenue, Bal Harbour; 855-811-1731; nestcasa.com.
