Copland described his Pulitzer Prize-winning Appalachian Spring as celebrating the “pioneer American spirit, with youth and spring, with optimism and hope.” All artists, programs, and pricing are subject to change.

Keyboard lovers rejoice! Bravo! Vail’s Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott takes center stage, opening with a jewel-like concerto, and a brandnew work commissioned in honor of McDermott’s 10th anniversary season. Originally conceived for keyboard, Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations is transformed into a vivid exploration of the colors and intimacy of the chamber orchestra’s sound world.

Classically Uncorked I Tuesday, August 2 Dover Quartet Joel Link, violin Bryan Lee, violin Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, viola Camden Shaw, cello SCHNITTKE String Quartet No. 3 BEETHOVEN String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 133, Grosse Fuge MENDELSSOHN String Quartet in D major, Op. 44, No. 1 Acclaimed for their “awesome sophistication [that] borders on the spiritual,” Calgary Herald, this celebrated young ensemble charts a musical journey from darkness to light. Alfred Schnittke, the master of musical eclecticism, uses modern language to create new context, and quotes Beethoven’s great artistic testament, the chaotic, tumultuous Grosse Fuge. Mendelssohn’s brilliant D major quartet, filled with light and energy, leads the journey to a sublime finish.

Classically Uncorked II Wednesday, August 3 Davóne Tines, bass baritone Dover Quartet Joel Link, violin Bryan Lee, violin Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, viola Camden Shaw, cello BATES Suite for String Quartet, World Premiere, CoCommissioned by Bravo! Vail and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts BARBER Dover Beach for Voice & String Quartet SHAW By and By RAVEL String Quartet in F major A high-energy world premiere sets the stage for the work that inspired the Dover Quartet’s name, Barber’s poetic evocation of the sea. Caroline Shaw describes By and By as “favorite old bluegrass and gospel songs reimagined in a gentler, darker context.” And finally, an elegant, glowing homage to Debussy. This powerful evening of works for voice and string quartet features the Bravo! Vail debut of bass-baritone Davóne Tines, whose artistry “embodies the evolving, divided soul of Black America” New York Times.

FEATURING DOVER QUARTET Joel Link, violin Bryan Lee, violin Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, viola Camden Shaw, cello DAVÓNE TINES, bass baritone ANNE-MARIE MCDERMOTT, piano EDGAR MEYER, double bass

Classically Uncorked III Thursday, August 4 Anne-Marie McDermott, piano Edgar Meyer, double bass Dover Quartet Joel Link, violin Bryan Lee, violin Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, viola Camden Shaw, cello CHRIS ROGERSON Dream Sequence EDGAR MEYER Quintet for String Quartet and Double Bass Two monumental works by two great living American composers who speak two completely different musical languages. Dream Sequence reflects the surreal atmosphere of living in extended solitude and deep isolation. On a lighter but no less compelling note, Meyer’s quintet is explained thusly by the composer: “The first [movement] is a cross between theme and variation and variations on a ground bass. The second movement is moderate with some sense of humor. The third is slow and devoid of humor. The fourth is fast (and difficult).” All artists, programs, and pricing are subject to change.
