FOLKSONGS for violin and piano BRAXTON BLAKE
Folksongs for violin and piano was composed between November 1986 and February 1987. The work was first performed on March 22, 1987 as the ballet “Americana” to choreography by Stephen Greenston. Greenston, then soloist with the Stuttgart Ballet, and I had recently completed our ballet “Alice in Wonderland” and wanted to collaborate further. In looking for subjects, I mentioned that I had wanted to compose a work based upon an event from my childhood. Raised in Galveston, Texas, I spent a good deal of time wandering through the city, eyeing the splendid old homes, many from the 19th century. One very large, old home, shaded in oak trees, happened to be empty with the door ajar. Inside, I was immediately struck with the feeling that each room in the house seemed to tell the story of those who had once lived there. Each of the five sections loosely recall individual rooms in that old home. Greenston drew upon this experience for his choreography.
