Week 1 – Saturday 12th September from 10:30am-12:30: Plant Life Cycles and Seed Sowing. Learn about the life cycle of a plant from seed to plant to compost. Plant vegetable and flower seeds in seed trays in the polytunnel and directly into the ground. Which ones will germinate first? Why? Does a seed have a ‘right way up’? Experiment with broad beans to find out. Make a funky, punky cress head – you can cut his or her hair – and eat it! Week 2 – Saturday 19th September from 10:30am-12:30: Soil Types and Composting. Time to get your hands dirty! What is soil made from? Have a closer look to find out. Take samples of different soil types and use your pH kit to test them. Compare your results to compost. How is compost made? Do plants need a soil based medium to live? Propagate your own plant cuttings in soil and in water. Week 3 – Saturday 26th September from 10:30am-12:30: Mini-Beasts. Wee beasties…. explore the gardens to discover the huge amount of wildlife under your feet, in the air, in trees and flowers, in water, under rocks and old logs. What do these creatures do? Are they beneficial to a gardener and the environment? Where do butterflies go in winter? Make a mini-beast house to take home and hang up in your own garden.

Week 5 – Saturday 10th October from 10:30am -12:30: How Did Your Garden Grow? Check out your seedlings from week one… how well did they grow? Compare the seeds sown in the polytunnel with those in the garden. What happens next? Pick out your seedlings into larger pots ready to take home and plant out in the garden. Learn how to look after your young plants until they get big enough to produce flowers or vegetables. Pot on your rooted cuttings. Take part in a fun scavenger hunt to make a nature collage to take home. Week 6 – Saturday 17th October from 10:30am -12:30: Harvest Time. Explore the gardens and wildlife trail to see what fruit, berries and seeds can be harvested. Discover garden herbs and brew up some herbal tea. Make a mini pot of raspberry jam, pick your own fruit to make toffee apples… and see if our home-grown pumpkins will be ready for Halloween! Children will need to wear old clothes as this is a hand-on practical gardening club and clothes for the different
