Our guides will walk you through the Gardens in the quiet and the dark, giving you a brief history and the opportunity to see the Gardens in an unusual way. March On Film, Ireland’s Premiere Film Making Competition/Festival, will be holding 2 screenings of a selection of the top short films from the 2014/2015 competitions.

The concept behind March On Film is simple. Teams must make a short film (3-6 mins long), from start to finish, within the month of March. The competition/festival attracts film makers of all ages and backgrounds from across Ireland. On September 18th we will be screening a selection of the finalist films from the 2014/2015 competitions. From horror and comedy to romance and drama, this list of shorts will cover all genres of film and allow audiences to see shorts from some of Ireland’s best up and coming film makers. On the night, Grace Wynne-Jones who reminds us all our stories are extraordinary and Frances Browner who relfects on Irish lives with disarming simplicity, will generously share their insights on writing. This will include gathering into informal groups for thirty minutes of a fun creative session. The floor will then be open for further discussion on the evolving process of writing and how writers’ group enhance the stages of this journey. The evening will conclude with an open mic for those who would like to share their inspired pieces from the night.

‘Blessington & Lakeside 1916 Celebration Committee is organising and audiovisual presentation, in historic setting of St. Mary’s Church in Blessington, Co Wicklow. As with all Culture Night events, admission to this event is FREE. The presentation will focus on creating awareness, among the old and new members the Blessington community, of the historic nature and significance of a number of landmark buildings in the town e.g. St. Mary’s Church, Credit Union, Ulster Bank etc. It will provide historical pen pictures of these buildings and their functions in former times. Martin runs Glendalough Guided Walks all year and can be booked for guided group walks in Glendalough’s Monastic City and Valley. The session will include warm ups and guidance followed by improvisation and concluding in a short performance piece. Join us this Culture Night with writer and creative writing teacher Dave Lordan who will run a creative writing workshop for 13 - 17 year olds from 5pm until 7pm in Greystones Library. Dave Lordan is the author of the experimental fiction collection First Book of Frags, published by Wurmpress, and is editor of the Young Irelanders fiction anthology published by New Island. We are also happy to announce that Bray resident, author, short story fiction writer and former politician Liz McManus will be reading from her second novel A Shadow in the Yard, followed by a talk about her work. Her awards include Listowel, Irish Pen and the Hennessy Award for New Irish Writing. Her first novel Acts of Subversion was shortlisted for the Aer Lingus/Irish Times award. She has also been a newspaper columnist. She has an MPhil with Distinction in Creative Writing (TCD 2012). She has recently been elected to chair the Board of the Irish Writers Centre.

In addition, for children, there will be materials to try out homemade charcoal and burnt cork to explore alternative mark making. The project involves making scarecrows, for both groups, with TAG also making 3D crows ... a”murder” of crows! Both groups are inviting their local communities to get involved in the creation process and there will be correspondence between both groups of scarecrows and crows in the form of postcards, drawings etc..which will be on display in both venues for Culture Night. Tinahely writers group will come on board for this part, and will give readings on the square on the night. Scarecrows and crows will be on display in the square and in the Courthouse on Culture Night and the public will be invited to dress a “skeleton” scarecrow.

Venue: Courthouse Arts Centre Time: 7:00pm Contact: director@courthousearts.ie Outreach officer and professional artist Maeve Hunter will work over 4 days from monday 14 to thursday 17 with a broad cross section of local community groups to collaborate, experiment and create large and small scale ‘nests’ from found and recycled materials: fabric, card, wax, paints, wire, wood, buttons, threads etc. The groups will learn how to weave materials together to create 3d nests using batik, stitching, embellishment and construction. These nests will be installed on Fri 18th and compliment the crows and scarecrows which will also be on display made by TAG. The installation will remain on display until Fri 9th Oct. An opening reception of the work will take place at on Fri 18 Sept 7:30pm before the Culture Night screening of the film Selma. All welcome. Free
At Tinahely CCÉ we will celebrate Culture Night by putting together a display of what our branch strives to achieve throughout the year at our lessons and workshops. It will involve an informal ‘Seisiún’ where people will perform traditional Irish music, song and dance. All ages are welcome, whether you are a performer or a spectator and there’ll even be a cuppa provided.

through the cells and meet the notorious protagonists of the 1798 rebellion and experience the overcrowding of the famine era, ascend into the Irish War of independence and Civil War when Wicklow Gaol finally closed its doors as a prison for good. New experiences at Wicklow’s Historic Gaol also includes audio handsets in four languages, interactive points for children and a genealogy centre for visitors and the Gaol Café.

Music Generation Wicklow presents a fun filled workshop for all those budding musicians hiding out there! Music Generation Wicklow strives to involve young people in music experience and education within the county. This workshop is suitable for children aged between 8 and 12 years and promises to be great fun as well as very informative. Children are introduced to percussion instruments and ‘sing-along’ and ‘playalong’ with boomwhackers – colour coded tuned plastic musical pipes. Join us for ‘An Evening of Song’ presented by classical singers Lorna Breen (Soprano) graduate of the Royal Irish Academy of Music and Shira Brady (Mezzo- Soprano) graduate of Trinity College with piano accompaniment. The programme will feature songs by the great classical composers as well as much loved and popular numbers from stage and screen.

The children’s workshop will be an interactive arts and crafts demonstration. The children will take part in creating something during the workshop that they can then take home with them afterwards.
