irginia’s Community Colleges were created more than 40 years ago to address Virginia’s unmet needs in higher education and workforce training. That pursuit continues with Achieve 2015, a six-year strategic plan for Virginia’s Community Colleges, beginning in 2009.

Achieve 2015 is focused on the needs of the communities we serve, not the needs of our community colleges. Community input served as the genesis for this strategic plan. Formal and informal conversations across Virginia with students, business and community leaders, and elected officials guided the plan’s creation. The ultimate success of the plan will be judged when Virginia’s Community Colleges report back to those communities with the results of its five measurable goals: Access, Affordability, Student Success, Workforce, and Resources.

lue Ridge Community College hosted a lecture about and showing of Richard Knox Robinson’s award-winning documentary “Rothstein’s First Assignment” in January, and the community packed the house to see the controversial film. “Rothstein’s First Assignment,” a story about documentary truth, centered on the photographic work of Arthur Rothstein, who was sent to Virginia in 1935 to photograph mountain residents before their removal to make way for Shenandoah National Park. It was nominated for the special jury prize at Seattle’s International Film Festival in 2011. Some who attended the showing were descendants of those displaced for the creation of one of America’s premier national parks.

fter expanding services and outreach to veterans and their families, BRCC was selected by Military Advanced Education (MAE) for inclusion in their 5th Annual Guide to America’s Top MilitaryFriendly Colleges and Universities. “The Guide has become an invaluable tool for both Education Service Officers/ Specialists and Base Transition Officers when advising their servicemembers about degree and certification opportunities currently available from institutions of higher learning,” said MAE Associate Publisher Glenn R. Berlin. Among the attributes considered in evaluating this year’s schools for inclusion in the Guide are: on-campus active duty/ veteran assistance, the sophistication and effectiveness of its distance learning programs, Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, and the number of ACE credits the school will accept, to name but a few. “Blue Ridge has seen a rapid increase in enrollment by veterans in the last few years. We have a dedicated veteran’s

counselor, an outstanding financial aid department, and a growing number of scholarships to support veterans,” said Dr. Bob Young, BRCC’s Vice President for Instruction and Student Services. He added, “BRCC has a large number of veterans who work at the College. The vice-president of the Student Government Association is also a veteran.” Military Advanced Education is the only magazine produced expressly for active duty/reserve servicemembers, as well as members of the National Guard and veterans who are seeking to take advantage of the Department of Defense’s education benefits. The BRCC Veterans Service Organization was recognized and registered as a chapter of the Student Veterans of America Organization. It is the first Veterans Service Organization of its kind at a community college in the nation. The BRCC VSO coordinated the College’s first Memorial Day Celebration this past spring, which included comments from Senator Emmett Hangar.

Survivors of the USS Indianapolis Disaster Tell Gripping Story of Heroism

“This subtle but powerful film establishes an important link between the inhumane practices of the American eugenics movement and Depression-era documentary photography. Robinson traces a chilling tale of deceit, cynicism, and stolen property that ruined lives in the process,” Carol Squiers, Curator of the International Center of Photography, wrote about the film. Robinson is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker based near Charlottesville, Virginia. His first film, “The Beekeepers,” premiered at Sundance in 2009 in the New Frontiers Shorts Program and went on to screen in Toronto and Telluride, winning Best Short Documentary at The Atlanta Film Festival. His still photography has been published and exhibited widely, appearing in numerous publications including Time, Smithsonian and National Geographic Traveler magazines. The event was sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Committee and the Appalachian Environmental Learning Community.

The USS Indianapolis delivered components for the world’s first operational atomic bomb (later dropped on Hiroshima by the Enola Gay) to the Pacific island of Tinian on July 26, 1945. Four days later, the ship was torpedoed and sank with 1,197 men on board. Approximately 900 men got off the ship into the shark-infested waters, halfway between Guam and Leyte. Because of numerous reporting issues by the Navy, nobody knew the USS Indianapolis was missing and no rescue was mounted. Purely by chance, the men were spotted by an aircraft on the fourth day.

Survivors Felton Outland and Ed Harrell, L. Peter Wren, a rescuer from the USS Bassett, and Earl Henry, Jr., son of Earl Henry Sr., the ship’s dentist who was lost at sea, recounted their memories of days spent in shark-infested waters during the closing days of World War II. The sinking of the USS Indianapolis was the largest single disaster at sea ever suffered by the US Navy. In addition

Of the 900 who initially survived the sinking, only 317 remained alive. After almost five days of constant shark attacks, starvation, terrible thirst, suffering from exposure and their wounds, the men of the Indianapolis were at last rescued from the sea. As of October 2011, only 48 survivors remained alive.

tudents were greeted with an entire week’s worth of activities as part of Welcome Week 2011. The first week of classes, various student groups and college employees coordinated games, entertainment, and food as part of the outreach effort. Information tents staffed with greeters were located around campus to answer student questions and provide information. More students than ever rode the BRCC Shuttle this year. September 2011 saw the largest number of student riders in the shuttle’s service history, with more than 6,600 student riders that month. Demand for transportation help for students coming from the Waynesboro area also led to an additional route, the Route 340 connector service, which runs to the College several times each day.

new Transfer Center on BRCC’s main campus gives students easy access to transfer advisors from four local colleges — James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University, Mary Baldwin College and Bridgewater College— and BRCC transfer advisor Rajan Shore. Transfer representatives from Old Dominion University also have an on-campus presence in the A building near The Center for Academic Vision and Excellence. Throughout the year, the Transfer Center offered information sessions with admissions representatives from other Virginia colleges and universities, as well as sponsored workshops to help students be better prepared to transfer to any four-year school. Nearly all public four-year colleges and universities in Virginia, as well as some private institutions in the state, have transfer agreements with BRCC. Others, like ODU and JMU, have degree specific articulation agreements with BRCC.

Peer Mentoring: Students Helping Students Succeed

T

he Peer Mentoring Program pairs academically at-risk students with mentors who are BRCC students who have attended the College for several semesters and have achieved academic success. Each peer mentor meets individually with 3 to 5 mentees for one hour per week to assist with aspects of college life such as time management, study skills, and life balance. Mentors work with each mentee to create a Student Success Contract, which consists of recognizing barriers to and setting goals for academic success, to be implemented during the semester. Mentors also familiarize mentees with BRCC and community resources to assist the mentees in reaching their academic goals.

BRCC SIFE Team

B

RCC SIFE continued their effort to improve our community and our world, from outreach in local communities through projects such as their Bridge Program, to their ongoing support for the Haitian village of Mon L’opital by providing goats and solar lights. Their hard work was recognized at the regional level, where they were named Regional Champions, and at SIFE USA National competition, as they were the top community college team in the country. They piloted a biomass briquette machine that was built with plans from Engineers without Borders, and some help from BRCC staff member Tim Byrd. The briquettes can be used as an alternative form of energy in third world countries, and BRCC SIFE hopes to take the machine to Haiti on their next trip. The BRCC SIFE Team also received a Lowe’s Community Improvement Project Partnership grant of $2,000 for rebuilding a school in LaGonave, Haiti. BRCC SIFE was one of 25 colleges and one of only two community colleges selected for the grant.

Students Volunteer on Appalachian Trail

I

n recognition of National Public Lands Volunteer Day and Appalachian Family Hike Day (both on September 24, 2011), students in the BRCC Appalachian Environmental Studies Learning Community worked on a section of the Appalachian Trail in the Shenandoah National Park. They completed repair and maintenance work on a 1.8 mile segment of the Appalachian Trail (between McCormick Gap and Beagle Gap). The students removed invasive plant species, cut back vegetation encroaching the trail, repaired and cleaned out water bars, rebuilt steps, and painted the iconic white blaze marks on the trees that have been guiding hikers along the Appalachian Trail for the last 80 years. In addition to this service learning, they also learned about the people that lived and worked in a typical “gap” environment in the Shenandoah mountain range. They studied the opportunities and challenges faced by the people inhabiting the mountains before the US government evicted them in order to establish the Shenandoah National Park.

Her photograph of a girl twirling a colorful umbrella was taken as a class assignment for capturing motion. “This photo was one of my favorites that I took last semester,” Zoya said. “There was something about the lighting and the way she looked timeless that I loved.” Zoya is from Harrisonburg and would like to transfer to George Mason University after finishing her studies at BRCC.

Two Students Win National Awards

B

lue Ridge Community College students Stephanie Bottoms and Jay Ripley won national awards for poetry and artwork from the Community College Humanities Association. Bottoms, a Verona resident, won an Honorable Mention award for her poem, “The Reese’s Klondike Dance,” published in 540 Magazine, BRCC’s literary magazine. Bottoms is a College Transfer major at BRCC and plans to study neuroscience at The College of William and Mary. Ripley received an Honorable Mention award for his acrylic paintings, six of which also appeared in 540 Magazine. The Mount Sidney resident is pursuing an associate’s degree in art.

BRCC Gets Gold for Going Green

Green Cleaning

T

W

he Advanced Technology Center at Blue Ridge Community College was recently certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, Gold certified facility. It is the first LEED Gold building on the BRCC campus, and the first in the Virginia Community College System. The $7.2 million, 20,500 square-foot facility is BRCC’s newest building. It is home to seven high-tech labs, two general classrooms, and the following BRCC programs: manufacturing engineering technology, electronics, engineering, physics, mathematics, and automated manufacturing. “This is a solid step along the College’s path of contributing to a more sustainable environment. A lot of effort went into achieving this level of excellence by everyone connected with the project. The returns from these efforts should continue to benefit us all for many years to come,” said Dr. Robert Baldygo, vice president of finance and administration at BRCC. According to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), “LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.”

hen most people think about “going green,” they think about conserving natural resources and protecting the environment. But area graduates of a training program for cleaning professionals, sponsored by Blue Ridge Community College and the Shenandoah Valley Energy Partnership, learned the importance of “green cleaning” to benefit health. Over the course of the intense, three-day training program, eight cleaning professionals from the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) and six from Western State Hospital (WSH) learned the latest scientific facts and techniques involved in cleaning to protect health and the environment. The training program, offered in collaboration with the Building Wellness Institute, is the nation’s only training program for cleaning professionals that is accredited by Green Seal, the nation’s leading independent provider of standards and certifications for cleaning to protect health and the environment. “We have known for decades that cleaning chemicals, equipment, and processes have a direct impact on the health of building occupants,” said Marion Stecklow, Executive Director of the Building Wellness Institute, who conducted the training program. “BRCC is to be congratulated as the first college in the nation to offer this accredited training program to local area professionals.” This first “class” of individuals in the program achieved an outstanding 100% passage rate on the final certification exam.

ver 400 job seekers attended BRCC’s 5th annual Careers Expo called “Let’s Connect” in April.

Held in the Advanced Technology Center and sponsored by the Alpha Beta Gamma business honor society, the Expo featured over 30 employers, a résumé writing clinic, job tips and strategies and two career-building seminars. Participants learned valuable information about the area’s employment outlook in a panel discussion called “Connecting Pieces of the Economic Puzzle: Employment Forecasts for the Valley.” The panel members included Sharon Johnson, CEO Shenandoah Valley Workforce Investment Board and director of Shenandoah Valley Energy Partnership; Robin Sullenberger, CEO of the Shenandoah Valley Partnership; and Billy

Vaughn, director of Community Development for Rockingham County. Another seminar called “Connecting with Employer Expectations: How to Get and Keep Your Job” featured speakers Ms. Marcy Engle, HR director at Eastern Mennonite University; Andrew Deitz, Sr. Human Resources Manager at nTelos; and Tim Nicely, HR director at BRCC.

he Advanced Technology Center at Blue Ridge Community College was recently certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, Gold certified facility.

RCC and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (BRAFB) partnered for the fifth year to raise the profile of hunger, both locally and abroad. The 5th Annual Virginia Hunger Symposium was designed not only to raise awareness, but to work toward solutions for a problem that plagues local communities, the nation, and the world. The Symposium began October 20 with a Harvest Carnival on campus, and culminated with the Empty Bowl Dinner Fundraiser and a benefit concert by Robin and Linda Williams and Their Fine Group on October 27. Other events during the week included additional fundraising opportunities like a taco salad bar, pancake breakfast, a buffet, and a hunger walk, as well as educational talks on childhood hunger, sustainability and feeding the world. This year’s event raised more than $8,785 and 1,000 pounds of food. All proceeds benefitted the BRAFB, which serves an average of 104,000 people each month. “We are deeply grateful to Dr. John Downey for having the vision to raise the awareness of hunger in our community through the Virginia Hunger Symposium,” said Larry Zippin, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. “As a result, Blue Ridge Community College faculty, staff, and students have donated nearly 150,000 meals to families in need over the past five years. This type of event is unparalleled among colleges in our area. We are profoundly appreciative for their partnership and their extraordinary endeavors in feeding our neighbors in need.”

hen Virginia-based insurance company Rockingham Group needed computer training for all of their employees last year, they came directly to Blue Ridge Community College.

“We knew that they had great facilities, materials, and knowledgeable instructors,” said Deb Van Horn, vice president for support services at Rockingham Group. The company had upgraded to Microsoft Office 2010, and needed to bring their folks up to speed regarding the differences between Office 2003 and the newer version. Sixty employees attended four training sessions with content customized to their specific needs. Rockingham Group even decided to provide some of their “super-users” with additional training on the more advanced functions in Microsoft Word and Excel. Van Horn said that the training BRCC provided met their needs, and the College was even able to offset some of the costs through incentive funding from the Virginia Community College System. BRCC Continuing Education Training Coordinator Mary Sulllivan says there is still incentive money available to help businesses and organizations get the training they require. “Before looking outside the valley, talk to the group at BRCC,” encouraged Van Horn. “If they don’t have what you need, they will try to build it for you and with you.”

Elizabeth Hall Libba was initially employed as part-time Coordinator of Job Placement from October 1989-September 1990 before leaving to become Human Resources Officer at Dominion Bank. She returned to BRCC on March 16, 1991 in the full-time position of Enrollment and Student Services Specialist. She retired November 2011.

Treva Shifflett Rowan Zeiss Rowan first came to Blue Ridge as Acting Coordinator of the Learning Laboratory and Instructor of Developmental English on July 16, 1970. She was then selected as a Counselor in August 1971 and on August 16, 1976, she accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Mental Health and Psychology. She retired as Associate Professor in June.

Russell W. Ralston Prior to coming to BRCC, Russ was employed by Staunton City Schools. He was hired as a wage employee in Student Services in October 1999. On December 4, 2000, he was selected as an Administrative Assistant in the Division Office and retired in that position on February 1, 2012. Russ is still an adjunct instructor at BRCC.

Treva worked at Rocco and Genesco prior to her part-time employment in the BRCC Learning Lab in October 1997. She was selected to fill the Instructional Center Technician full time on May 25, 1999 and retired from that position in July.

This type of event is unparalleled among colleges in our area. We are profoundly appreciative for their partnership and their extraordinary endeavors in feeding our neighbors in need.”

BRCC Raises Hunger Awareness with Week of Activities

hen Virginia-based insurance company Rockingham Group needed computer training for all of their employees last year, they came directly to Blue Ridge Community College.
