ARTS/DANCE/THEATER Creative Contemporary Dance

Musical Theater & Dance

For new or experienced dancers, this class provides each student the chance to feel triumphant in their own achievements. The course entails exploration, discovery, body movement, and stress-relief. Each class begins with warm-ups, inspired by contemporary dance forms and yoga practices; followed by movement that allows for expressive emotion, and a chance to relate to other dancers. Dancers will feel exhilarated with energy and passion for moving their body. Class ends with stretching cool down. Friday’s class period includes a 30-minute creative demonstration of contemporary dance processes.

Ready to practice basic jazz technique and fundamentals? Move to your favorite musical tunes (Mamma Mia, Chicago, Disney on Broadway, West Side Story, Cats) to warm-up with basic steps inspired by jazz pioneers Fosse and Luigi. Turn, jump, leap, learn traveling steps across the stage and create group formations of synchronous movement. Indulge in a bit of non-verbal acting, character work and relationshipbuilding with the music, involving these moving dynamics: sharp, smooth, slinky! A good chunk of class will embrace Broadway choreography, to present at Friday’s open session. Dancers will learn their unique roles in familiar musical productions; costumes/props may be brought from home to rehearsals and used during Friday’s musical theater show.
