BREMENPORTS CONFIDENT FOR FUTURE Port expects to build on 2016 success

s Europe’s secondlargest port for handling new cars, Europe’s fourth-largest container handling terminal, and Germany’s second-largest port overall, the Bremen/Bremerhaven group of ports is confident of its place in “the premier league of maritime logistics.” Alongside the containers and cars, the twin ports also have an enviable reputation as specialists in breakbulk cargo. bremenports, Germany’s No. 1 breakbulk port, handled 4 million tonnes of breakbulk in 2016, including steel and steel products, timber, project cargo, industrial plant components, construction materials and waste products. Neustädter Hafen, the harbor on the left bank of the River Weser in the center of Bremen, is Europe’s largest terminal for general and heavy-lift cargo. BLG Cargo Logistics handles about 550 seagoing vessels and barges there every year, and in 2016, cargo throughput at Neustädter Hafen reached 1.2 million tonnes. Bremen and Bremerhaven are ideally equipped to face the competition in the international breakbulk business, says Sven Riekers, managing director of BLG Cargo Logistics. “Breakbulk and ro-ro vessels depart at regular intervals, linking our terminals with more than 200 ports all over the globe. When it comes to the transshipment of conventional cargo, there is virtually nothing that our equipment cannot handle.
“Amongst other things, this includes crane capacities of up to 200 tons and our own self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT).” Neustädter Hafen has more than 240,000 square meters of indoor storage area, 450,000 square meters of outdoor storage and operation area and 2,100 meters of quay. The terminal has trimodal handling facilities and is linked to the North Sea (66 nautical miles) via the Lower and Outer Weser.

Other companies which specialize in handling breakbulk in Bremen City are located on the right bank of the Weser, at the Industriehafen, Holzhafen and Fabrikenhafen). One of them is Weserport, which specializes in the transshipment of coils and other steel products. In Bremerhaven, where the Weser flows into

Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven The €180 million Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven, or OTB, project is in limbo, due to legal challenges. Contracts have been signed for construction and written agreements are in place, but the real challenge is the legal assessments required to clarify the need for offshore wind infrastructure in the port, because of the nature conservation area, said Robert Howe, managing director of port management company bremenports. However, he is confident that the development will go ahead soon. The plans are to build a 25-hectare terminal to provide heavy load capacity and unrestricted access to deepwater, close to the production sites for wind turbine components – to be ready for the expected peak in German wind power investments. While Bremerhaven already has the expertise and experience in handling wind turbines, OTB would be a specialist, purposedeveloped operation. When the OTB plans were first drawn up, an opening date of 2019 was envisaged, but this was before environmental organization BUND made its objection to the development. In fact, this delay may work in bremenports’ favor, as the German government has tapped the brakes on offshore wind. The likely date for OTB to be up and running is now 2021-22 and that is when the main focus on wind is now expected to start, Howe said. Wind energy is an increasingly important sector for bremenports, Howe added. “This sector benefits from water depths for seagoing vessels, an excellent port infrastructure and an efficient cluster of maritime industry.” OTB has been designed for the preassembly, storage and transshipment of offshore wind turbine components; the proposed 500-meter-long quay will be able to accommodate two or three offshore jack-up vessels, and about 200 hectares of industrial sites are available nearby for new companies and expansions.

the North Sea, container terminal operator Eurogate specializes in the transshipment of wind turbines. The port is particularly well equipped to deal with vehicles as well as the high and heavy sector. And bremenports has ambitions plans for a 25-hectare terminal to serve the offshore wind industry – the Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven.
2016 was a busy and successful year for bremenports, Howe said. “Together, our staff of roughly 370 employees ensured that the infrastructure at the world port of Bremen/ Bremerhaven was available for our customers without restrictions round the clock, 365 days a year.”
“The ports of Bremen/Bremerhaven are perfectly confident when facing the competition for the cargoes of the future,” said Robert Howe, managing director of port management company bremenports.
Bremerhaven handles the largest container vessels in the world – 400 meters long, more than 20,000 20-foot equivalent units – without any difficulty, as well as car carriers, refrigerated fruit vessels and all other types of seagoing vessels.
“Our ports repeatedly prove their capabilities in the breakbulk segment – for instance, when it comes to handling iron, steel and forest products, machines and machine parts, project cargo, extra-large vehicles, wind turbines and other kinds of general and heavy-lift cargo. Over the last few decades, the specialists on the Weser have made their location the market leader in Germany, ranking far ahead of Hamburg in terms of breakbulk transshipment.”
bremenports is committed to continued development of the ports, with several major investment projects under way. However, day-to-day work is also considerable; for example, bremenports’ dredging operations regularly work to capacity to guarantee the necessary water depths in its harbors, Howe said. “The effort, time and resources required for maintenance of the public port facilities in Bremerhaven and Bremen are immense and will remain so in future.”

Rail Investment Bremen and Bremerhaven’s hinterland connections are efficient – but as cargo traffic in Germany is increasing year by year, so Germany must invest massively to build new railway tracks and roads, says Robert Howe, management director of bremenports. At Bremerhaven, roughly half of containers travel to and from the port by rail, while for automotive traffic the figure is a staggering 85 percent. The expansion of the Imsumer Deich storage track complex at Bremerhaven’s Überseehafen is the most important construction project under way, said Robert Howe, managing director of port management company bremenports. Due for completion at the end of this year, this €30 million project will provide eight new parallel tracks, of 750 meters in length. Two years ago, bremenports provided additional tracks and technology for rail freight around Kaiserhafen, an area used primarily by car-carrying trains. The expanded facilities at Imsumer Deich will be used mainly for the transport of containers. “Last year our ports handled about 30,000 cargo trains, with the majority carrying containers and cars. Today, one in every two containers in Bremerhaven’s hinterland traffic is transported by train – the highest share amongst Europe`s maritime hubs. We are investing in the port’s railway system to increase the capacity, to allow for more trains transporting more containers and cars,” Howe said.

Q&A: A conversation with Robert Howe, managing director, bremenports BY FELICITY LANDON
“
We are proud of our international openness and welcoming culture.”
BREMEN BUILDS ON KEY STRENGTHS Q: What can delegates to Breakbulk Europe expect from the port and the city? Any specific highlights they should look forward to?
A: Bremen’s international traditions as a Hanseatic trading city and through its seafaring history are still alive today. But those traditions go beyond its maritime locations, being particularly visible in the international and diverse society living and working in the city. We are proud of our international openness and welcoming culture. The city is marvelous – one of Northern Germany’s most picturesque places, including UNESCO world heritage sites such as the gorgeous Weser Renaissance town hall, the cathedrals and, of course, the Bremen Town Musicians. Bremen is green and safe; many parks
and gardens make the city a livable place. Whether in the historical Buergerpark or along the River Weser, there is always an opportunity for time out under trees. And the city is safe – you can easily walk around during evenings. Bremen is a mid-size town, with roughly a half-million inhabitants. Distances in Bremen are short and many places are within walking distance. Alternatively, a public transportation network brings you to any place in the city.
Q: bremenports reported positive cargo volumes in 2016 (aside from a 1 percent fall in containers) – what are the key strengths of Bremen and Bremerhaven, and what are the prospects for 2017, 2018 and beyond? A: There are different key strengths. Here are the advantages at a glance:

•H igh standards in throughput operations and top quality logistics services. To give you an example, North Sea Terminal (NTB) is rated as the most productive container terminal in Europe. •A short estuary trip between our Bremerhaven terminals and the North Sea. • E fficient and reliable hinterland connections to all parts of Europe (rail, road, Autobahn, waterways). • E xcellent cost-benefit ratio. •C ountless opportunities for specialist and advanced training. •O utstanding communications and IT competence. • A highly qualified and motivated workforce.
To answer the second part of your question: Different international problems – such as political tensions, low economic growth in many countries, upcoming protectionism, Brexit uncertainties – are putting a strain on the world’s economic development. Nevertheless, we are sure that Bremen/Bremerhaven will defend their strong position in European port competition. We will see a moderate growth of throughput volume in the years to come.
Q: Is bremenports investing? What are the most important investment projects recently completed, ongoing, or planned?
A: The most important project right now is the expansion of the Imsumer Deich storage track complex at Bremerhaven’s Überseehafen. Construction work is making good progress and will be finished at the end of this year. This €30 million project will provide eight

new 750-meter parallel tracks. We are investing in the port’s railway system to enlarge the capacity for more trains transporting more containers and cars. Other important investment projects are Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven, which will strengthen the (offshore) wind energy sector in Bremerhaven, including industrial construction of wind turbines and heavy load logistics; quay restoration at the Kaiserhafen III port basin, with construction of a new 500-meter quay to make it easier for car carriers and other ships to navigate there; and dyke construction in the south of Bremerhaven.
Q: Are ‘green’ issues important? A: Another core task of bremenports is to identify solutions for maritime environment protection and green shipping. This leads to an increasing international reputation: last
autumn, the European Sea Ports Organisation presented bremenports with the ESPO Award 2016 in recognition of our overall concept for Luneplate (central substitute site for the ecological compensation for port construction projects). Right now we are modernizing our fleet of about 20 working vessels. The LNG hopper barge greenports1 will join the bremenports fleet in summer – a small but important step to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our port.
Q: What makes bremenports special? A: Terminals in Bremen and Bremerhaven handle practically all kinds of freight. That is one of the reasons why the ports of Bremen rank among the most important universal ports in Europe. They have excellent overseas and hinterland connections, an efficient cruise terminal, outstanding logistics expertise and a highly qualified and motivated skilled workforce, as well as numerous oppor-
tunities for specialist and advanced training. The division of labor is the key to the success of the twin ports. Bremerhaven is the port of choice for container vessels, car carriers and refrigerated fruit carriers and accounts for about 80 percent of the total freight volume handled by the port group. Bremerhaven is also evolving into a major location for the offshore wind energy industry. The ports in the city of Bremen, on the other hand, specialize in handling conventional general cargo and heavy-lift, as well as bulk cargo. The share of breakbulk has steadily declined in line with the increase in containerization. But the ports of Bremen still remain a center for handling these kinds of freight. Most of the breakbulk cargo handled by the Bremen/Bremerhaven port group is handled at the terminals in Bremen City.

bremen timeline CREATING VALUE AT EVERY POINT OF TRANSFER
2,000 YEARS AGO: The northeast district of Bremerhaven, the Wurtendorf Weddewarden, was settled by humans. The first documentary evidence of human activity dates back to 1091. 1139: A written record of the villages of Geestendorf and Wulsdorf date back to this year. The settlements were situated on islands rising from large swamps and riverine areas. MID-1200S: The first port of Bremen, the Balge, was on a narrow branch of the Weser. A new quay was built, the Schlachte, on Bremen’s side of the main river. 1275: The market town Lehe was mentioned in documents for the first time. Lehe’s development was closely linked to the importance of the Geeste, the first navigable
tributary of the Weser, which provided a sheltered port area for oceangoing vessels. A trading center was created close to a military crossing of the Geest. 1405-1410: Construction of Bremen’s famous town hall in the Gothic style – its Renaissance style façade was not added until two centuries later. Also in the market square – Roland, Bremen’s “statue of liberty,” has been a symbol of trading rights and freedom since 1404. 1600S: The area at the mouth of the Geeste was contested for a long time. In the mid-1600s, the area, together with the Archdiocese of Bremen, came under Swedish sovereignty. However, the Carlsburg fortress built by the Swedes on the Geeste estuary in 1672 did not succeed.

welcome to bremen 1719: After a short period under Danish occupation, the area was taken over by the Electorate of Hanover. 1827: As silting of the River Weser posed a threat to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen’s port, the city’s Mayor, Johann Smidt, led the initiative to found a new outer harbor on the former Carlsburg site – Bremerhaven. The first port of Bremerhaven was opened in 1830. 1832: Trade with America and the beginning of mass emigration meant a rapid boom for Bremerhaven. The settlement that grew up around the port was granted city rights in 1851. The following decades saw a rapid expansion of industrial and maritime activity on both banks of the Geeste, including passenger
services, dry docks, machine shops and deepsea fishing.
1964: Bremen’s first container port was opened, the Neustadter Hafen.
1847: The first rail link to the port was opened, with a freight station on the new quay, the Weserbahnhof.
1970S: From this decade, new container terminals were built north of the older part of Bremerhaven port operations, towards the open sea.
LATE 1800S: Dredging work was carried out on the Weser and new modern basins were built in Bremen. 1900S: Bremen and Bremerhaven experienced the upheaval of changing borders and two World Wars. 1950S-1960S: The post-war years saw massive reconstruction followed by a strong upswing in port, shipbuilding and fishing sectors. 1960S: The advance of air travel led to a rapid falloff in transatlantic passenger traffic.
TODAY: Bremen/Bremerhaven is the fourth-largest container port in Europe; the second-largest for new cars; and the second-largest for breakbulk. Neustadter Hafen, operated by BLG Cargo, is Europe’s largest terminal for general and heavy-lift cargo, with throughput reaching 1.2 million tonnes in 2016.
2002: bremenports took over management of the port infrastructure in Bremen and Bremerhaven on behalf of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. bremenports is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the whole of this complex maritime infrastructure.
In Bremerhaven, the container terminal operator Eurogate also specializes in the transshipment of wind turbines. bremenports has invested heavily in facilities to serve the offshore wind energy sector. Bremerhaven welcomes visiting cruise ships at the Columbus Cruise Center, the very spot from which more than 8 million emigrants left Europe for the New World, from the early 19th century onwards.
2008: Container Terminal 4 was completed. 2011: Kaiserschleuse Lock was opened.

reakbulk Europe, the world’s largest event for the project cargo and breakbulk industry, will move to Bremen, Germany, for the first time in its 12-year history. Messe Bremen will welcome the Breakbulk community May 29-31, 2018, while Antwerp Expo undergoes renovations. “Last year’s stakeholder survey was resounding in terms of the community’s interest in Germany and we are incredibly excited about hosting everyone in Bremen for the 2018 edition,” said an ITE spokesperson. Andreas Marquardt, of Messe Bremen, credited the city and trade fair company’s success on “our overall package of logistics expertise, internationally established exhibition center and the maritime flair of our Hanseatic city.” Although the 2018 event is nearly a year away, demand for stand space has been overwhelming, with nearly 70 percent of Breakbulk Europe’s 2017 exhibitors rebooking their stand space already. Following the usual 30-day renewal period, new exhibitors will be allocated positions via a waiting list, on a first-come, first-served basis, with the new 2018 plan due to be made public in late June. For a detailed explanation of the booking/ rebooking process and timeline for Breakbulk Europe 2018, please go to www.breakbulk.com When the city of Bremen opens its doors to Breakbulk Europe in 2018, attendees will have some 100 hotels to choose from, with 10,000 beds at their disposal, 60 percent of which are within walking distance of the conference center. Breakbulk has secured large blocks of rooms in Bremen in order to provide exhibitors and attendees with the best rates available.
14 BREMEN SPECIAL www.breakbulk.com
Like with the exhibitor booking process, reservations have been offered first to 2018 exhibitors and hotel organizer, BTZ Bremer Touristik-Zentrale (Bremen Convention Bureau), is accepting hotel booking forms from all participants. Requests are processed as they are received, so exhibitors and delegates are encouraged to submit forms as soon as possible. For day visitors to Messe Bremen, there are 2,500 parking spaces at the exhibition grounds and the central train station is a three-minute walk from the venue. The airport is 6 kilometers from the city center and Hamburg airport is also accessible by train. Breakbulk Europe 2018’s host city is home to the twin ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven, which are managed by bremenports. Together they are important logistics hubs for the automotive industry and the offshore wind sector. Project cargo and breakbulk cargoes – large machinery, industrial plant components, steel and more – are primarily handled through the Port of Bremen. Sven Riekers, head of breakbulk sales at the BLG Logistics Group in Bremen and Bremerhaven, noted: “The ports of Bremen naturally also benefit from their role as two of the leading breakbulk ports in Europe. The decision to hold the fair here is a logical consequence of our activities.” All indicators are suggesting that Breakbulk Europe will continue its success at its new locale. Breakbulk Europe was launched following the many successes of Breakbulk Americas, the longest standing Breakbulk event, which was created more than 25 years ago. The Europe edition was an immediate hit when it debuted in 2006, filling Antwerp’s Old Town Hilton to capacity. The event then moved to Antwerp Expo, each year increasing in both scale and attendance. The 2017 event continued that success, attracting more than 1,000 new attendees. Total attendance also increased with 8,210 industry professionals participating at Antwerp Expo.

BREMEN IS ‘BUZZING’ BY FELICITY LANDON
When Breakbulk Europe 2018 exhibitors and delegates arrive in Bremen, the city will offer plenty of opportunities to mix pleasure with business. “However you arrive in Bremen, once you are here you don’t need any transport,” said Maike Lucas at Bremen Tourism. “You can walk out of the exhibition and straight into the old historic city. There are 10,000 hotel beds in Bremen, and 5,000 of them are within walking distance of Messe Bremen.” 16 BREMEN SPECIAL www.breakbulk.com
Where to go? Let’s start with some landmark attractions: a visit to Bremen would likely take in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage listed town hall; Gerhard Marcks’ bronze statue of the Bremen Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale; the Ratskeller, which is Germany’s oldest wine cellar; Bremen’s beautiful cathedral; and the Schnoor, the city’s oldest quarter, packed with historical charm. The Hanseatic city of Bremen on the River Weser has clearly been shaped by 1,200 years of history, and the grand old buildings around the market square reflect its roots as an ancient trading center.
But without wishing to consign history to – well – the history book, the city’s amazing heritage is just one aspect of Bremen’s undoubted attractions. As the people at Bremen Tourism emphasise, Bremen today is “buzzing,” a cosmopolitan city with a packed calendar of events including art, music, dance, opera and theater, as well as Europe’s biggest six-day cycle race, sports events and other summer activities such the Maritime Festival and the Freimarkt, the oldest funfair in Germany. All this is matched by a vast choice of shopping, eating and drinking. “We work with four theme clusters – historical, surprising, natural and vibrant,” said Lucas at
VISITOR HOTSPOTS Visitors taking a tour of the most notable sights in Bremen do not even need a map; 2,000 brass and steel studs guide them from Liebfrauenkirchhof to Böttcherstrasse via the market square and the Schnoor quarter. Bremen’s 600-year-old town hall became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004. The UNESCO report described it as an “outstanding example of the Weser Renaissance architectural style in northern Germany.” In the Upper Hall, the most magnificent ceremonial venue in Bremen, model ships hanging from the ceiling bear witness to the importance of commerce and maritime trade. St. Peter’s Cathedral (pictured below, at right) reaches a height of 99 meters. It is an unwritten rule that no structure in Bremen can be taller than the cathedral. Pretty half-timbered houses dating back more than 500 years line the narrow lanes of the Schnoor Quarter – visitors can browse for handicrafts and handmade gold, or call in at the House of History. The Ratskeller, where people have enjoyed fine wine and good food since 1409, has the world’s largest selection of German wines.
‘CELEBRATIONS GO ON ALL YEAR ROUND’ Bremen Tourism. “In Bremen, the celebrations go on all year round. There’s something for everyone, from gravity-defying acrobats and graceful dancers to chart-breaking pop acts. Not a month goes by without some exciting event taking place in the city.” Besides serving as the location for Breakbulk Europe 2018, Messe Bremen – Bremen Exhibition Center – houses a wide range of events every year. Highlights on the calendar include the international Space Tech Expo, which is booked at Messe Bremen every year to 2022, fish international and jazzahead, the exhibition and meet-
ing point for international jazz, which has expanded constantly over the past 10 years.
Bremerhaven welcomes visiting cruise ships at the Columbus Cruise Center, the very spot from which more than 8 million emigrants left Europe for the New World, from the early 19th century onwards. Visitors can learn their story at the German Emigration Center or explore Bremen’s wider seafaring tradition on the Maritime Mile, where Germany’s first man-made harbor was built 400 years ago and the country’s last fully rigged ship afloat is anchored.
A notable addition to the calendar next year will be the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), the annual scientific conference and space exhibition which attracts about 4,000 astronauts and others from the space industry. IAC was held in Bremen in 2003; as Germany’s main space city and one of Europe’s major space centers, Bremen is delighted to be welcoming it back in October 2018, says Andreas Marquardt, director of guest events at Messe Bremen. MESSE BREMEN: BREAKBULK EUROPE’S 2018 HOME “Being right in the middle of the city is a big advantage and very important for us.” – Andreas Marquardt director of guest events, Messe Bremen
Located in the heart of the vibrant city of Bremen is Messe Bremen – Bremen Exhibition Center, where Breakbulk Europe 2018 will be held. “Being right in the middle of the city is a big advantage and very important for us,” said Andreas Marquardt, director of guest events at Messe Bremen. “We are directly next to the main railway station and only 15 minutes from the international airport, which is linked to Messe Bremen by tram. Sixty percent of our visitors arrive by public transport. We are also close to the motorways and have parking for 2,500 cars.” Messe Bremen’s eight exhibition halls provide a total of 40,000 square meters of exhibition area. It is directly linked to the OVB-Arena and Bremen Congress Center, providing 21 conference rooms with individual capacities of between 70 and 1,600. Operated as a department of the state-owned Bremen Economic Development Corp., Messe
Bremen has helped put Bremen on the map as a modern exhibition city with world-class standards. This has particularly been the case over the past two decades – since Halls 4 to 6 were opened in 1997, followed by Hall 7 in 2002. “Our job is to satisfy customers and bring people to Bremen,” Marquardt said. “Twenty years ago we started out with empty halls – now we are fully booked and have about 80 in the Messe team. As well as hosting shows, we started to build our own events, and we now have more than 20 of our own shows.” “As for Breakbulk, it means a lot to bring the show to Bremen. Of course, Bremen is Germany’s biggest port for breakbulk and the No. 2 port overall in Germany. Bremenport’s operations are a big reason why Breakbulk is coming here. “Messe Bremen is a very functional center, with a lot of glass and light. And, of course, we are also very friendly!” Marquardt said.
MESSE BREMEN is delighted being the host of Breakbulk Europe 2018 for the first time. We are looking forward to a successful event and wish everyone involved an enjoyable stay in Bremen.

Bremen and Bremerhaven: the home ports of Breakbulk Europe 2018 Breakbulk Europe is heading to the twin ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven, which are less than 60 km apart as the crow flies. At both locations, BLG LOGISTICS operates high-performance terminals for handling break bulk as well as high & heavy cargo. Liner ships connect the terminals with over 200 ports worldwide. Many years of experience, extensive technical expertise, and closely networked terminals ensure smooth shipping operations. Customers can rely on individual, tailor-made solutions for cargo handling or lashing. On request, the technical and nautical experts at BLG work out concepts reaching from the plant to the port of destination.
Neustädter Hafen, Bremen Neustädter Hafen in Bremen is Europe’s largest terminal for conventional and heavy cargo. Covering an area of some 1 million km² - including more than 200,000 m² of covered space - the port handles the entire range of break bulk goods: steel products, forestry products, project cargo, and wind turbines. Currently, it handles around 1.2 million tons per year. The port is connected by liner routes with many ports around the world. Ships regularly run from Bremen to the USA and Mexico as well as numerous destinations in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. Also included here are ports in the Middle East. To use the full potential of the large operating area, BLG LOGISTICS offer its customers assembly services: Piece weights of up to 800 tons are assembled in the port and loaded directly onto seagoing vessels.
BLG AutoTerminal, Bremerhaven Apart from more than 2 million vehicles, some 1.2 million tons of high
The BLG AutoTerminal Bremerhaven is served by all major ro-ro carriers and connects Bremerhaven with the key ro-ro hubs. No other ro-ro terminal in Germany offers a higher frequency of departures. BLG LOGISTICS offers a large range of supplementary services relating to ro-ro cargo handling. Furthermore, it has its own SPMT (self-propelled modular transporter) vehicles that provide special options for loading extra-heavy or long units onto ro-ro ships.
First choice for break bulk and high & heavy Whether the goods to be loaded are high-quality steel coils, rolls of paper, heavy press parts, or complete underground trains: The BLG LOGISTICS terminals in Bremen and Bremerhaven are up to any challenge. Due to excellent road, rail, and inland waterway connections, they are first choice for break bulk or high & heavy cargo in Germany and the rest of Europe.
