pects returns which at the moment might be very difficult to achieve.

Is consolidation in the heavy-lift sector complete? How have banking reforms and private-equity investments shaped industry restructuring?

For BBC Chartering, going through these times means to ensure the best trading of vessels in any market and to take a leading role in consolidating activities. We continue to do this by serving the interests of cargo customers and vessel owners. This way we continue to build the market’s leading project chartering network and the most attractive platform for marketing of tonnage.

Consolidation is ongoing and I dare to say that it will continue to be the determining theme in our industry in the coming years. The economic environment and the markets are plagued by overcapacity, which makes it an economic necessity to consolidate activities to create more effective and powerful players. Those should be able to survive and constructively shape the segment’s future. We see banks trying to reduce their risk, and others who strive to optimize their business portfolios. It’s a long and winding road for all. The industry needs financing alternatives, and private equity remains a promising option, but at the end everyone who makes an engagement decision ex-

to best cover this segment and operates the market-leading share of capacity. We believe that operating the largest share of the most capable tonnage gives our customers the highest degree of flexibility and reliability for their transport needs. It’s no secret that the situation for new buildings at the moment looks quite difficult. Future oriented, highly capable and eco-friendly tonnage is needed, but the market environment is a challenge for all. Not surprising, the order book for new buildings in this segment has been reduced by almost half, with many projects canceled or shelved.

The global multipurpose and heavy-lift fleet amounts to 3,248 vessels today. Of this inventory only 10 percent qualifies as premium project carriers, not even considering future eco-trading requirements. Traditionally BBC Chartering tries

It has always been my utmost concern to put our customers first. They want flexibility, they want reliability, they want quality, they want a professional handling and they expect 100% integrity.

BBC Chartering

What strategies do you have for your port selection process? How important are port service levels, labor, efficiency, reliability and cost? How does that integrate with your port hubs? As a global carrier we offer worldwide service and manage nearly 6,000 port calls on more than 700 ports. Our top 10 ports account for about 20 percent of our port calls, which may give an idea of our port diversity. It’s a BBC Chartering asset that we can deliver a high quality service even at least frequented ports, wherever this is needed to meet our customers’ trading requirements. We have built dedicated setups for our high-frequency ports, and we work with established agencies who help us to get our job done. Our global supplier management program helps us to become more efficient and improve our services. And we continuously evaluate existing and new partnerships, benchmark performance, and discuss this with our partners. Operationally we focus on cost and service levels. Over the past 20 years we have built up an amazingly effective global network and I am not only proud of great working relationships, but also the many friendships we made along the years. Where and what are your next terminal development projects? We see quite a few large volume contracts where we work on arrangements with selected terminals. Our focus is to accommodate specific trading and handling re-

quirements for the dedicated projects on hand, i.e. incremental moves to improve the handling of BBC vessels.

Service/Demand/ Customer Base/Innovations What key initiatives are being put in place to broaden BBC’s cargo base, expedite movements and expand markets?

As a global service, apac offers unmatched flexibility, and we expand and adjust the service as we go. For example, we just added a new monthly Asia-New Zealand leg on our apac map which is open to consolidate cargo en route and beyond. What are the top requirements your customers demand? Where does ease of doing business fit in? Do your requirements of terminal operators differ greatly?

In 2015 we have launched “apac service” to brand the industries’ first global high performance service network. With apac we promise to offer a transport solution for “any port, any cargo.” Today apac service offers the greatest value in project shipping, and has developed as a great success story. Our customers love it because they can be sure of receiving best transport performance and a quality solution, anywhere and for single cargo transactions, strategic volume contracts, heavy-lift operations, or any other special project requests. Although this is the market-leading proposition, it is very unfortunate that shipping price levels today are devastating and do not reflect the value our customers receive; this definitely needs to change so service quality can be sustained.

It has always been my utmost concern to put our customers first. They want flexibility, reliability, quality and professional handling, and they expect 100 percent integrity. They count on our word, and we give a commitment that goes from A-Z in the whole process.

We moved a record 7 million freight tons in 2016 and operated a fleet of 180 vessels, providing a peak fleet capacity of more than 2.1 million dwt. By the end of the year we have created total bookings exceeding 9 million freight tons, which translates into a backlog of about 2 million freight tons booked forward.

How have market demands changed? How is BBC’s capacity and service evolving?

BBC Chartering 20th Anniversary Issue

Not everything is easy in this type of business, but without integrity any capability becomes worthless. This extends to our partners worldwide. This is real value and often spares our customers a lot of headaches. We call it an “integrated service” and take at heart what our customers value. I am really proud that we could built a truly global network that is able to perform on any port, any cargo request.

Over the past 20 years we have seen a tremendous development of our industry, and with that wrote our very own history. I think most noteworthy is that the general cargo,

BBC Chartering Corporate Values breakbulk, project or heavy-lift shipping segment is a very exceptional business. Where container trading was driving down unit cost, and largely helped global trading for mass markets, general cargo and breakbulk shipping always led a life off the standard track, offering tailored cargo solutions. We very early set a course to build a global service brand for professional industrial shipping and with that for a global “any port, any cargo service.” This thought was always at the essence of what BBC does and will continue to do in the future. One of the major challenges for industrial customers, contractors or project forwarders lies in the fact of an atomistic market structure, i.e. hundreds of global shipping companies focusing on the vessel, but not on the service, and hence not on the customer. As globalization continued at ever-faster pace, customer demands became more complex and global trades for project cargo and supply chains evolved. With that grew the need for more reliable service levels and non-standard shipping solutions for ever-bigger, heavier equipment and more complex logistics. BBC Chartering has always been at the forefront of these developments and focuses on service, building everything around on a “customer first” strategy, giving the market the desired flexibility and reliability of our chartering solutions. Over time, more capable tonnage was needed and we’ve been a major driver of

vessels referred to as “premium project carriers.” More than 80 percent of our fleet is capable of lifting 240 tonnes and above, and it is our declared goal to provide the world’s largest, most capable fleet in the segment. Our services leverage our capability to consolidate cargo on our vessels and to create tremendous opportunity and economic advantage for shippers and ship owners alike. BBC Chartering wrote shipping history in cargo parceling, customer service and by combining this with a high performance fleet concept. This resembles the backbone of the BBC Chartering service network. The future will certainly challenge us in many aspects, but as long as we strive to continuously better our service, become more efficient and provide the

highest performance in project shipping, we follow an infinite mission building the world’s leading project shipping company. Tell us about BBC’s next efforts in lowering its carbon footprint. Which BBC innovations and developments are helping to cut costs and reduce environmental impacts? Eco-friendliness is one major requirement for our new buildings in project shipping. With our core partners we have developed an eco-friendly design of a 12,500 dwt vessel with 500-tonne lifting capacity. Our “EcoTrader 500” is also called “the next generation workhorse” in project shipping because the vessel is an upgraded version of the most widely used design in the project shipping industry, also known as the E/F-type.

Our EcoTrader 500 incorporates many smaller innovations that together create significant cargo-handling improvements and efficiency gains. Two vessels of this new design have already been delivered. What we have seen so far looks very promising. This year we will welcome another two units. We are also very proud that the new vessels will receive a DNV-GL Environmental passport and achieves remarkably low EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) values which today already underscore the limits set for 2025. Is the container industry’s move toward automation creeping into the heavy-lift sector? If so, how is BBC embracing it? We believe in what we do, and that there will always be a market for exceptional cargo and trading requests. We see this as the essence and strategic focus of BBC Chartering. We grew up by delivering on non-standard assignments, and although we are sure that the market will change, the challenge remains to accommodate cargo and trading requests that are less standardized and where quality carriers can provide a clear competitive advantage.

BOYD

Future In which global markets and industry sectors do you see growth, and what will it take to capitalize on that growth? At the moment it is difficult to foresee any change or global market trend which may increase demand, cargo volumes and hauls in project shipping, both regarding regional developments or industrial cargo segments. The project market is in a phase of low growth and consolidation. The challenge is maintaining market share and limiting risk. For us it is imperative to become more efficient, and eventually increase our market share on which we can capitalize in the future. How have industry pressures helped make BBC a better company? What must happen to take your services to the next level? Where will you guide BBC in the long term? Of course, we work to become better every day … A next level for us means to become even more efficient and customer focused. Eventually the market will find a new balance and reward those who were able to build a sustainable business during difficult times of consolidation. The past

and the present have shown that our platform is most attractive and that it provides the most efficient marketing of tonnage in the segment. This allows us to provide the highest shipping performance and service level to customers. I am convinced that steering BBC Chartering along this course continues to distinguish the BBC Chartering brand from other shipping companies.

Role/Management How would you describe your management style? How is it reflected in your company? I grew up in this industry and I invested a great deal of my time in it, often putting my personal life second. I am very grateful for this exciting time, but I am also proud that I could build up BBC Chartering this way. Everyone who knows me, also knows what it means to me personally and that the values behind BBC Chartering are the values of our customers and that is what I always tried to promote in the organization. It’s about quality, reliability, flexibility, professionalism and most of all, about integrity. I would say my style mostly reflects the value of flexibility to those who look at it from the outside. But actually for me integrity comes

Who Is BBC Chartering? on top as I think this is the precondition for everything we do. You can hire the smartest and most talented people on earth, but without integrity all of this is worth nothing. So my style is integrity first, then it’s about flexibility and all the other values. BBC’s success is described in “Customer first!” How has your operational philosophy evolved through that approach? If a customer comes to us, and we end up with a contract, we see this is a promise for performance and do everything to stick to it. It’s about accommodating the customer’s cargo and trading request, although we know that in shipping things are not always running as smooth as we wish, and often a big deal of trust is involved. We have managed to make trust in project shipping a standard for customers, and this provides real customer value – our customers know that we do everything to make it work for them. We follow through with this from the initial fixture, the technical cargo process and vessel operations until the project debriefing to capture any learning. We make sure our customers know what to expect, stay involved, and are satisfied with our performance. We can only be “anchored by excellence” if we follow a “customer first” philosophy.

market leading fleet an impressive fleet of 180 vessels is BBC’s backbone Largest and Most Capable MPP/HL Starting with the world’s largest multipurpose/heavy-lift fleet (MPP/HL), adding in a wide variety of vessel size and lift capabilities, and then providing almost any carriage option from tramp to semi-liner to liner, the combinations and permutations of BBC’s ocean service are seemingly unlimited. EPCs and project managers can draw on MPP/HL vessels ranging from 3,500 to 37,500 deadweight tonnes (dwt), including handy-size bulkers. The consolidated fleet offers a gross capacity of more than 2 million dwt. About 40 percent of the fleet offers lifting capacities of 500 tonnes or more – the maximum lift is currently at 900 tonnes and closing in on 1,000. The range of vessels and self-geared cranes maximizes flexibility for cargo and ports, and optimizes performance. More than 80 percent of BBC’s vessels provide lifting capacities of 240 tonnes and above, hence qualifying as the world’s largest fleet of premium project carriers operated out of one hand. The BBC fleet is one of the world’s youngest, helping to earn BBC a reputation for reliability, performance, safety and service quality. Reinventing the Rulebook BBC’s customers want shipping solutions that are competitive, reliable, flexible and safe. Using its market-leading fleet of multipurpose and heavy-lift vessels, supported by an industry-leading project chartering network, and its ‘any port, any cargo’ shipping options, BBC will continue to offer global firsts to enable unrestricted trading.

Newbuilds The BBC fleet composition is not static. Vessels are chartered in, repositioned, bought, sold and upgraded. Future requirements are always top of mind. An innovative newbuilding program is rolling out eco-friendly 12,500-dwt multipurpose/ heavy-lift vessels with lifting capacities of 500 tonnes. Called the ‘EcoTrader 500’, each of the new vessels is especially optimized for fuel economy and cargo handling in the compact MPP/HL segment. BBC’s mission is to provide a worldwide network of vessels for every breakbulk, heavy-lift, project cargo and bulk need. The size and versatility of its fleet ensures the best value for customers by providing the right vessel for each cargo and trading request, while maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste.

introducing newbuildings for a new era: the BBC EcoTrader 500 To stay at the top of the project cargo delivery market, constant intelligent, informed and innovative effort is obligatory. But human resource efforts must be supported by other resources, and in BBC Chartering’s case, its fleet has long been its guiding star. The latest group of newbuildings is leading the way. The next generation of multipurpose/ heavy-lift (MPP/HL) vessels will be delivered to address future requirements put forth by an industry intent on faster and greener supply chains for bigger, heavier, more sensitive and more valuable cargo.

BBC Chartering 20th Anniversary Issue

The EcoTrader 500 BBC Chartering and its core tonnage partners outlined attributes for its new class of vessel, the EcoTrader 500: • Eco-friendly 12,500-dwt MPP/HL vessels • Lifting capacity of 500 tonnes • Optimized for fuel economy and cargo handling in the compact MPP/HL segment • Designed in-house by BBC Chartering’s parent company Briese, amalgamating and fusing decades of know-how on best design for breakbulk and project cargo trades

Evolving Market Spawns Challenges In a highly competitive market plagued by overcapacity, fleet performance is critical and customer demands are rising. BBC’s offerings are rising in tandem.

“Our ships are designed for flexible deployments and reliable carriage of practically any conceivable cargo,” said Raymond E. Fisch, senior vice president strategic projects at BBC Chartering. But, with a clear trend towards bigger and more expensive cargo, especially in the project business, it forces us to be even more flexible.” To cope with stricter environmental regulations, the growing importance of the ‘environmental footprint,’ and enormous cost pressures, and to succeed in the markets of the future, shipowners must invest in innovative technology.

Made to Measure – Challenges Met The future is here. Together with its partner shipowners Krey Shipping and Auerbach, BBC’s parent company Briese has launched the 12,500-dwt EcoTrader MPV 500. The ships are being built at the Chinese shipyards Jiangsu Hongqiang Marine Heavy Industry and Jiangxi Jiangzhou Union. The new class of ship promises to be the next workhorse of the industry – and an icon of eco-friendly trading. Based on market observations, new technologies and statistical evaluations of the company’s own fleet and its operating profiles, the Briese newbuilding team identified seven areas on the legacy vessel with wide-ranging improvement po-

tential, and addressed each. Those elements were lower fuel consumption, fast loading and unloading, eliminating shipping route restrictions, designed for optimized project cargo, flexibility, lower operating costs, and green ship characteristics.

An Economic and Environmental Forerunner Employing trendsetting technology in the MPP/HL ship segment, the eco-features of the new vessel are mainly driven by the combination of new type of engine, an intelligent power management system, a market-leading performance monitoring system, and an optimized hull with low resistance anti-fouling paint. The engine concept combines a low-speed, ultra-long-stroke design with a fully electronic engine control, designed as a best solution for reducing consumption values and CO2 emissions in vessels of this size. Engine concepts of this type have been used in larger vessels to reduce their environmental footprint and to drive down unit transportation cost. Applying such technology for the project, breakbulk, and general cargo business is a new milestone in the development of the MPP/HL segment. The first of the EcoTrader 500 class, the BBC Birte H., was built and put into service

by a new owner already, and with voyage data exceeding expectations, BBC Chartering is confident it will have a winning class on its hands soon. Drawing the right conclusions from practical experiences is standard procedure at Briese Schiffahrt, and a key success factor for the current newbuilding project. “You have to be intimately familiar with the interrelated requirements of the shipowning and affreightment businesses that the new vessels will have to live up to,” said Bernd Boening, Briese’s project head. It is extremely helpful to work closely with the charterer who can provide all the relevant information regarding long-term market trends, as well as cargo types and their handling requirements, he added. “The most important criteria for the design concept are economic feasibility and flexibility,” Boening said. It begins with determining the size of the ship, followed by the optimization of the hull for the intended cargoes and operating modes, then the performance requirements for the cranes and their interaction with the hatch cover system, through to the selection of the best propulsion system.

“A good hull shape is always the fundament for fuel efficiency,” says Boening. A statistical analysis of the speed, draft and trimming records from roughly two-dozen ships in the Briese fleet was the starting point for developing the future operating profile and defining the optimization targets for the EcoTrader plan.

inland office, as well. If the vessel is found to be operating outside its most efficient range, action can be taken immediately. “But the most important benefit is that the system raises the crew’s awareness of efficient operating practices. That alone will make a big difference,” Boening said.

Boening’s newbuilding team worked closely with the Shanghai-based design team, overseeing and directing its activities, to ensure a level of vessel quality and sustainability sufficient to enhance its value for the long term. Among its most important attributes, the end product EcoTrader 500 has an outstanding Energy Efficiency Design Index, and by far exceeds the requirements newbuilds must meet as of 2025. The right ship design will help maximize cargo flexibility and minimize operating costs and risks so the vessel can meet future market demands. The new vessel will cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by roughly 30 percent compared with existing tonnage. Fuel consumption and the propeller shaft power output are continuously measured and evaluated by an intelligent Performance Monitoring System. “Customizing a standard product to make it an optimal fit for the ship and its cargo requirements is an art,” Boening said. But capacity is not everything. Crane outreach, lifting heights and the fine-tuning between the crane and the hatch cover system are major performance-enhancing features.

The EcoTrader 500 has an outstanding Energy Efficiency Design Index, and by far exceeds the requirements newbuilds must meet as of 2025. Each EcoTrader has two 250-tonne Liebherr cranes capable of delivering their full 500-tonne capacity in tandem operation, with an outreach of 11 meters from ship’s side over the pier (when using a lifting beam). The cranes can utilize a major portion of their lifting capacity across the entire

BBC Chartering 20th Anniversary Issue

deck area, which makes it easier to load and transport extremely bulky cargo items. The cranes are also approved for continuous bulk operation. “No other ship in our fleet offers better crane reach and lifting heights,” Boening said. Because of the ship’s dimensions, there is no need for stabilization pontoons. This allows the ship to utilize all of the available space for payload.” A combined hatch cover system consisting of mainly folding covers, and two pontoon covers in the midship area between the cranes will avoid time-consuming cargo turnover. The main cargo hold is 76.5 meters long and 17.6 meters wide, and the tank top can bear deck loads of up to 25 tons per square meter. “The two-hatch system has increased loading flexibility significantly,” Boening said. “The new ships can carry large, bulky cargo such as wind turbine rotor blades below deck.”

Greater Flexibility Amidships, the two pontoon covers that close the gap between the folding covers can carry 8 tons per square meter. “Using both hatch covers together we can transport very heavy single cargo units such as cable reels with a gross weight of up to 3,750 tonnes,” Boening said. The movable tweendecks, which can be lifted using auxiliary hoists, support up to 4 tonnes per square meter, further increasing cargo loading flexibility. Special attention was given to the vessel’s stability and strength limits for safe operation. Any cargo, any port – the fact that each EcoTrader is interchangeable with its sister vessels and, with some limitations, with its predecessor series as well – gives BBC Chartering even greater flexibility in the market. This is especially helpful for fleet performance management. “Making the best possible use of a ship’s capacity is the high art of affreightment,” Fisch said. But competition is tough. Innovative, highly cost-efficient and flexible ships make business a lot easier. After all, fleet performance makes the difference.

serving russia better: overcoming obstacles to efficient project delivery EPCs, project forwarders and cargo owners shipping to or receiving from Russia must make logistics decisions in an environment where they don’t know all the factors. Russia’s business environment differs from other markets in many ways and poses specific challenges requiring local knowledge. This complicates a supply chain – especially a project cargo supply chain – because it not only needs to be globally managed, but also adapted to local conditions. Having a proven fleet and team on your side, one who understands Russian supply chain challenges and offers advice and solutions for overcoming those challenges, is an important step toward successful project cargo transactions.

Challenges to be Managed What types of challenges need to be managed for Russian loads and deliveries? • I nherent market instability and uncertainty, perhaps best addressed by flexibility and responsiveness. • A rapidly evolving telecommunications network – but information sharing may still require good relations with customers and suppliers, so mutual trust and commitment are crucial. • Administrative barriers, requiring sufficient time and resources to deal with paperwork and government relations. • Regulations, that may be best addressed by local advisors. • Poor infrastructure. For project cargo movements to and from Russia, experienced service and exceptional planning is an imperative.

Best Solution – Three Regular Services BBC’s Russian Services were put in place to address customer demand. The experience that comes with regular, frequent service can all but eliminate many of the supply chain challenges that customers struggled to overcome in the past. BBC’s Baltic, Caspian Sea, Arctic Sea and Black Sea services provide customers with tailor-made and effective solutions to their project cargo and other diverse cargo needs. Heavy-lifts, coastal services, and navigation-restricted services into main Russian waterways such as the Volga River system are all part of a day’s work at BBC Chartering. The services utilize various multipurpose and heavy-lift sea and river vessels, ranging in size from 100 to 3,500 deadweight tons. They run year-round, with calls at a variety of ports on an inducement basis. BBC always ensures the right type of vessel is employed to best suit a customer’s cargo needs. Frequently, on Russia’s waterways, the necessary craft will be gearless coaster tonnage, heavy-lift pontoons, river barges and similar tonnage in conjunction with tug operations. BBC identifies and offers an impressive spectrum of unique and innovative solutions. Local offices in Bremen and St. Petersburg look after all the paperwork, arranging for all the required permits and clearances, and track each shipment throughout its voyage via a daily tracking and reporting system.

delivering crucial plant components to central russia Praxair Inc. is the largest company in the industrial gases sector in North and South America, and one of the largest worldwide, with multibillion-dollar sales. The company produces, sells and distributes atmospheric and process gases, and high-performance surface coatings. Back in 2011, the company’s subsidiary Praxair Rus won a contract to supply oxygen, nitrogen and argon to NTMK, a division of the EVRAZ Group, a leading global steel company with its main steel production facilities in Russia. To deliver 3,000 tons of industrial gases per day to NTMK in Nizhniy Tagil, located in the industrial region of Sverdlovsk in central Russia, Praxair had to build new, energy-efficient air separation plants. Agility Logistics managed integrated logistics for the project, and Agility contracted with the LOGIS Group and BBC Chartering for the shipment of two complete sets of air separation units and other plant com-

ponents. BBC Chartering was in charge of the ocean-sea-river transport and the barging was managed by LOGIS. The project entailed shipping more than 20,000 freight tonnes, including 21 pieces of heavy-lift cargo. A large portion of the cargo was delivered by the BBC Summer on its maiden voyage from Shanghai to Mariupol. In Mariupol the cargo was transshipped onto four Russian sea-river vessels that then took the heavy-lift cargo to Nizhnekamsk and to the other general cargo to Perm for discharge. The heavy-lift cargoes shipped to Nizhnekamsk were loaded onto two roll-on, roll-off river barges. These two barges made five voyages to Verkhnechusovskiy Gorodki (on the Chusovaya River) where they were discharged using ro-ro ramps, for trucking by the client to their final destination, Nishniy Tagil.

A second shipment of about 6,000 freight tonnes was loaded in Antwerp onboard two Russian sea-river vessels. Routed via Gibraltar, these vessels went to Rostov-onDon in the Azov Sea first for customs clearance, following which they continued to Nizhnekamsk and Perm for unloading. The complete delivery, starting with the arrival of BBC Summer in Mariupol, took two months. This included 33 days for barging and ro-ro operations. It was finished in late October, three days before the Kama River closed to navigation for the winter. BBC Chartering’s office in St. Petersburg was key to developing and implementing this complex delivery solution. Administrative expertise and project execution at this level is what brings customers back again and again. The obstacles to Russian moves are notable, but so is the strength and capability of BBC Chartering’s suite of Russian services.

between the lines: the Caytrans BBC secret Strategic Alliances Expand the Brand Owned vessels, charters, affreightment, alliances – these are all ways a global project cargo operator can assemble enough tonnage to build a global brand. BBC Chartering has selected each of these methods and more, to expand globally in a rapid-fire manner.

The Joint Venture In a more than 10-year-old alliance with Dan-Gulf Shipping, out of New Orleans, BBC Chartering operates Caytrans BBC, a weekly high-performance breakbulk shipping business for multipurpose and heavy-lift services between the U.S. Gulf (Mobile and Houston) and Colombia, North Coast South America (NCSA), the Caribbean and Central America. In 2006, the two companies came together and agreed to share the wealth of experience and information they had gained over the previous decade in the project market. BBC Chartering USA in Houston

handles Caytrans BBC sales in the Texas region, and Dan-Gulf also books business from its New Orleans’ office. The line principally focuses on carrying project cargoes such as mining and oil equipment and heavy-lifts, as well as hazardous and bulk cargo. It has enjoyed steady growth over the years. Caytrans BBC continues to expand its presence in this market and continuously adapts its unique schedule to regional market needs and trade developments. Caytrans BBC operates a fleet of shallow-draft, box-shaped multipurpose tweendeckers, with lifting capacities of up to 120 tonnes. At any time, the service can directly access the large, well-equipped and versatile fleet portfolio at BBC.

Avenue for Growth In 2011, Caytrans BBC expanded its offerings by initiating twice-monthly service to Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago. The ser-

vice loads out of Houston and Mobile and discharges in Pt. Lisas, Trinidad. Other load ports are offered on an inducement basis. The increased frequency to Venezuela and the establishment of a new regular service to Trinidad was a logical expansion for Caytrans BBC. And like its sister service, the new service can also access the full BBC Chartering fleet and lifting capacities up to 800 tonnes as needed. In 2013, the company stepped up capacity by adding the 6,150-deadweight-ton multipurpose BBC Ocean to its regional fleet. Adding a larger vessel allows Caytrans BBC to book larger shipments into and out of the North Coast of South America. A decade after inception, the joint venture has proven its value as a conduit for continued growth in a market area where both parties had previously operated. Caytrans BBC is one of the most prominent shipping services from the U.S. Gulf to Colombia and Venezuela, with integrated ocean transpor-

tation solutions to the world’s major energy and infrastructure companies.

ployed a substantial amount of equipment and material back to the USA,” said DanGulf founder Niels Busse.

Leveraging Flexibility and Fleet Dan Gulf and BBC Chartering offer flexibility, reliability and innovation in ocean transportation. Among Caytrans BBC’s largest projects handled to date was a record-breaking 790-ton, 128-foot-long project piece that journeyed to New Orleans from Jebel Ali, Dubai, aboard the Palbora. Caytrans BBC also recently handled a project into East Coast Nicaragua that entailed the use of 10 dedicated vessels loaded with oil well supplies. The cargo had to discharge at El Bluff and El Rama, Nicaragua – two ports with severe draft and load restrictions.

Last year Dan-Gulf and Caytrans BBC moved six land drilling rigs from Houston to Dos Bocas, Mexico. Each rig consisted of more than 4,200 cubic meters of cargo and each needed to be transported within a four-week time period, necessitating close coordination and vessel scheduling. Caytrans BBC used its own fleet of vessels to successfully complete the project on time and within budget.

Secret is Teamwork Describing the mission of Caytrans BBC, Busse said, “We are a team of dedicated shipping professionals who come to work every day with the singular focus of providing innovative solutions to our clients’ transportation needs. No cargo is too big or too complicated for us to move.” Svend Andersen, CEO of BBC Chartering said, “Attitude and skill make a great service, and this is where the core of BBC Chartering and Dan-Gulf branding comes together.”

“The shipments were extremely time sensitive and required the use of specialized shallow-draft vessels, which were also equipped with specialized cranes. Once the project was complete, we also rede-

any port, any cargo: look no further With escalating containerization of global trade, cargo that doesn’t fit into an ISO box is ever in danger of being left behind. And despite the scaleback and slowdown of many global projects since the global financial crisis and, more recently, the widespread commodity glut and advent of depressed commodity prices, cargo volumes of all shapes and sizes must still be transported to and from points across the globe. With shifts in technology, production, sourcing and consumption, new infrastructure projects still need to be built. But EPCs, forwarders and cargo owners responsible for the projects face a host of perils:

20 |

• Lack of ocean carriage options. • Lack of available ocean tonnage, in the right place at the right time. • Irregularity of service, unreliable timing. • Insufficient vessel load or lift capacity. • Inefficient vessel design for specific cargo or port. • Shipper’s inability to attract an inducement call. • Lack of ongoing service to project sites over time. • Inability to lower risk on shipments. • No integrated inland logistics. • Lack of quality or ecological controls. • Insufficient origin or destination market experience. • Lack of expertise in engineered transport for high-value shipments. • Meager risk reduction strategy. • Uneconomical transport, with little concern for value chain.

BBC Chartering 20th Anniversary Issue

Challenging Market Forces Evolving expectations, the slow recovery following the 2008-2009 economic downturn, new supply-chain technologies, shipbuilding developments, sourcing and consumption shifts, and emerging economies of scale have worked together to put the ocean carriage industry through a period of restructuring and consolidation unlike any before. The end result for container shipping lines: few, large alliances of carriers. For other general cargo carriers, the evolution continues. BBC’s innovative and unorthodox response to an unprecedented mix of overlapping and challenging market forces was to add a service concept. Too many shippers were being left out in the cold, and BBC Chartering identified a niche. In retrospect, the niche is actually a series of niches wrapping the globe.

dard has been proven in countless single cargo transactions, many sophisticated project deliveries, and through various strategic partnerships since 1997. Now, those same service elements have become a trademarked commitment.

Unrestricted Trading With about 6,000 port calls annually managed through BBC Chartering, no other project carrier engineers more transports and executes more cargo operations around the world.

In 2015, BBC Chartering launched the “any port, any cargo service,” the world’s first high-performance inducement service network for project cargo on more than 30 global high-frequency trades for project, breakbulk and general cargo. Managed by BBC Chartering, the apac service combines the efficiency of a liner service with the flexibility of a project tramp service to ensure market-leading shipping performance, economics, service quality, and eco-friendly global ocean transportation. Utilizing the world’s largest fleet of multipurpose and heavy-lift vessels, a market-leading project chartering network, and BBC Chartering’s accumulated experience in delivering integrated project solutions, the apac service quality stan-

Third-party logistics providers, EPCs, industrial customers, raw material traders, and resource customers have put apac to the test. Small businesses and multinational players, transporting everything from small crates to elaborate heavy module structures are using apac services to their advantage. For a new and ongoing volume contract delivering Airbus aircraft components between Hamburg and Mobile, BBC launched a new apac initiative: other customers can book cargo on this high-frequency trade route from the European Continent to North America on a part-cargo basis.

While apac is essentially a trademark that describes BBC Chartering’s commitment, it provides a recognizable framework by which customers can better understand BBC’s unique ability to help them. Tramp shipping may claim to carry anything to anywhere, but at what price? And liner shipping prides itself on providing fixed schedules, but will it load or offload at the best port for the shipper?

Launch of apac

Proof in the Pudding

Some of the breakbulk and project cargo industry’s traditional service options have been frustrating or expensive or slow for shippers. Their services were limited and limiting; apac is not. apac aims to create awareness about BBC Chartering’s unmatched combination of performance and flexibility in project shipping, while bringing customers the best of both worlds. It gives customers shipping solutions that are competitive, reliable, flexible and safe. Operating the world’s largest fleet of multipurpose and heavy-lift vessels, and utilizing an industry-leading project chartering network, apac is well-suited to provide seamless delivery of integrated projects. apac addresses the needs of simple cargo transactions and sophisticated projects with heavy-lift operations, with the same skill and precision.

When the brand new heavy-lift vessel BBC Ruby, a late member of the BBC Amber-class was rolled out in 2015, its impressive maiden voyage showcased the parceling power of the any port, any cargo service. In its first trip from Donghae, Korea, to Davisville, Rhode Island, the BBC Ruby loaded two carousels, which were filled with some 3,200 tonnes of cables, additional bobbins and cable equipment, as well as another 2,000 freight tonnes including a 265-tonne heavy-lift from Masan, Korea, to Jeddah and Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, and eventually another 7,300 freight tonnes including a 415-tonne heavy reactor from Ulsan, South Korea, to Jizan, Saudi Arabia. BBC Chartering’s vast network allowed it to consolidate large project cargo parcels on the apac service rotation of Far East, Middle East and North America.

Big Potential Serving any port and any cargo, BBC’s market potential is big; every day BBC introduces more customers to the value, quality, reliability, flexibility, professionalism, and integrity intrinsic to the BBC brand. But its niche will always be technically and commercially engineered transport. That is the foundation of its success.

landmarks in the making: carrying iconic cargo BBC Chartering makes an impact on the world every day, delivering important cargoes for customers around the world. Sometimes, BBC moves cargo that will only be used or seen by a select few. Other times, the cargo is destined to become part of a city skyline, a work of art, or an iconic structure meant to be seen and enjoyed by masses. Regardless of the project’s visibility, BBC’s goal is to provide consistency and cargo care from the initial booking and stowing-lashing analysis, through preparation for loading, all the way to the actual handling, stowing, securing and ultimate delivery. BBC has been entrusted with cargo operations and services for several iconic project structures, including the New York Wheel, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, New York World Trade Center Transportation Hub and Montréal’s New Champlain Bridge.

This project requires reliability and high-performance cargo service, integrated with shipping capacity that matches project progress step for step. “We work to understand the challenges and risk of our customers on such de-

manding projects,” said Benjamin Nobel, chartering manager at BBC Chartering’s Genoa office. “After a diligent process of evaluating our capabilities, we are pleased to say that our fleet and service concept made all the difference and eventually helped us become the carrier of choice for Mammoet Logistics on this project.” Mammoet, in a joint venture with Dutch giant wheel specialist Starneth BV, is responsible for the design and construction of the New York Wheel.

new champlain bridge Transformative projects, the kind that usher in a new day, don’t come often. The new Champlain Bridge will definitively transform the Montréal skyline in a matter of months.

River in service by the end of 2018. The new three-corridor bridge was designed to integrate into the landscape, reflect unique community characteristics, and enhance its role as the primary gateway to Montréal.

As many as 60 million vehicles and US$20 billion in Canada-U.S. trade pass over the crossing each year. As one of the busiest crossings in Canada, the Champlain Bridge provides a crucial route for the local economy and for Canada as a whole. However, the old bridge is nearing the end of its life cycle.

BBC Chartering was contracted by a main supplier to the Signature group, to move the various steel construction pieces of the bridge, basically the base of the bridge, from Spain to Montreal. The next component of the contract is the “connection” between the feet of the bridge and the bridge itself. BBC is loading each shipment in the series at Sevilla, Spain. The entire project comprises 10 to 15 shipments.

The US$4 billion New Champlain Bridge corridor project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America. The project includes not just the New Champlain Bridge, but a new Île des Soeurs Bridge and reconstruction and widening of the federal portion of Autoroute 15. Through a public-private partnership with Signature on the Saint-Lawrence Group, the Canadian government will place the new bridge spanning the St. Lawrence

The development and construction of bridge infrastructure of this magnitude entails substantial last-minute component and packaging adjustments. BBC Chartering’s Genoa-based Benjamin Nobel said that when a shipper is faced with an amount of uncertainty about project cargo weight, dimensions and other specifications, having a heavy-lift transportation partner with a

large fleet, many carriage options and great flexibility can make all the difference. This is where BBC Chartering excels. “When the final layout, configuration and packing list are not known in advance,” said Nobel, it provides challenges. He said BBC has the assets and the chartering professionals who have the level of competence necessary to efficiently handle large-scale shipments with just two to three weeks lead time on final shipment details. To execute such shipments with precision and agility is an important goal, and one that Nobel sees flawlessly executed time and time again. “When customers need a lot of flexibility, and room for last-minute changes, we can provide it with our big and versatile fleet,” said Nobel. For the new Champlain Bridge, “A lot of the pieces are between 140 and 220 tons. The size of BBC’s fleet, offering roughly 20 to 30 ships in Europe each month with sufficient capability and capacity to accommodate these pieces, was important to the shipper.”

new york metro Nestled amid Manhattan’s rising new World Trade Center complex, the WTC Transportation hub is an awe-inspiring feat of design and engineering. Completed in 2016, the winged ‘Oculus’ compels attention, while helping pedestrians connect to transit. It is an important part of the shifting New York skyline. BBC Chartering provided transport for 5,000 tonnes of steel structures used in the construction of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The BBC Alabama and BBC Danube loaded the heavy steel structures in Porto Marghera, with delivery direct to Port Authority of New York and New Jersey facilities. Although comprising only a small part of a giant project, BBC Chartering was a proud participant in bringing this new icon to life.

Authority Trans-Hudson Transportation Hub promises to not only bring architectural beauty to downtown Manhattan, but also to significantly improve mass-transit connections throughout the region. Designed by celebrated architect Santiago Calatrava, the 800,000-square-foot structure features a multi-story central transit hall, commuter rail platforms, a network

of underground pedestrian concourses to existing and future transportation services (capable of accommodating 250,000 pedestrians per day), and retail facilities. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation and through the Federal Transit Administration, built the US$3.2 billion project.

With its spectacular soaring design, featuring retractable 150-foot-high, glassand-steel ‘wings’ that will allow natural light to pass through to the below-streetlevel rail platforms, the new WTC Port

Loaded in Kuwait aboard a series of three vessels, the pieces were offloaded at Richards Bay/Cape Town, and delivered safely and in perfect order. The iconic stadium was completed on time – the first of five built for the FIFA World Cup. An estimated 6,800 jobs were created during development and construction of the stadium. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is the kind of project that proves gratifying to the BBC Chartering team. The stadium has brought long-lasting economic benefits, urban renewal, and socio-economic opportunities to the Port Elizabeth area.

Shipment: NMT Global Project Logistics selected BBC Chartering to move 23,000 freight tonnes of mining equipment, trucks and other project cargo in eight shipments from Houston, Montreal, Genoa, and Antwerp to Punta Rincon, Panama. BBC Edge: Capacity. Mining equipment specialty. On the largest shipment, BBC was able to load more than 12,000 tonnes of mining equipment.

Careful planning, supervision and securing of cargo by skilled crews demonstrates the company’s exceptional commitment time and time again. With cargo safety the top priority, BBC experts work around the clock to ensure industrial cranes, machinery, equipment, rolling stock, pipe, vessels and other shipments arrive on time and in perfect condition – with no broken promises.

Mining and Construction Because mining and construction industries are highly cyclical, the ability to ramp up and scale back production rapidly is vital. Global economics are at play here. For example, a high demand for mined resources such as copper or coal can trigger development of new extraction efficiencies requiring new technologies and equipment that need to be transported to project site.

Recognizing the need for expediency, BBC partners with mining and construction companies to keep operations running smoothly and better than ever, by providing transportation and expertise to deliver, for example, cleaner burning earth-moving equipment, or newest-generation water purification and treatment plants.

Port Construction Over the last 10 years, BBC has, somewhat ironically, contributed to the rapid global expansion of its sister container industry by moving many gantry and mobile harbor cranes to ports around the world. The transportation of large-scale cranes requires great precision and control. It takes flawless professional expertise to execute a stowage and securing plan to ensure the safe arrival of the cargo, and, also critically important, the safety of the vessel and crew while at sea.

Spotlight on Crane Delivery to Indonesia Cargo: Mobile harbor cranes for Indonesia.

Spotlight on New Harbor Cranes for Chile

Site: Delivered to the port of Manokwari, Indonesia.

Cargo: Three new harbor cranes for Chile.

Shipment: UTC Overseas selected BBC Chartering to move three new Liebherr mobile harbor cranes which can each handle heavy-lift cargo up to 200 tonnes. Two were destined for the port of Lirquen’s multipurpose facilities. About 1,200 nautical miles further north, the very modern port of Angamos, which handles copper as well as containerized and other general cargo, received the third crane.

Shipment: The BBC Pearl loaded in Zhangijagang, Shanghai, China, and transported 104,000 cubic meters (2,300 tonnes) of cargo for a Wuhan-based customer. The on-deck load included four 350-tonne mobile harbor cranes, and one large and one small ship-loader. Smaller additional cargo was loaded below deck.

BBC Edge: Routing flexibility. Crane transport specialty. BBC is able to time and route vessels, consolidating multiport shipments to minimize client cost. BBC also leads the industry in engineered transport with a team that plans the vessel’s stability, stowage, and lifting with the utmost precision. In this case, two short “railway tracks” were welded on the hatch covers to move the cranes into position, and, container towers were installed to serve as resting pontoons for the mobile harbor crane booms. Continuous ballasting was required to balance the vessel, and the operation awaited optimal weather windows. Extensive lashing, and securing with “stoppers,” was also a vital element.

BBC Edge: Deck capacity for over-dimensional – with more than 100,000 cubic meters on deck. Intra-regional trade. For extremely bulky and oversized cargo, and for short distances, such as this intra-Asia trading requirement, BBC Chartering’s portfolio of nearly 180 vessels provides a great selection of suitable bottoms.

Site: The ports of Lirquen and Angamos invested in new mobile harbor cranes, which they received through a recent shipment onboard the BBC Aquamarine.

Vehicle, Rolling Stock and Yachts Companies around the globe are investing billions of dollars in upgrading fleet equipment to build capacity, reduce fuel consumption and meet environmental goals. Because many of these projects require delivery to ports not regularly served by a typical liner carrier, BBC’s handy-sized and versatile fleet has proven valuable. BBC is able to call ports based solely on customer needs. Customers have relied on BBC Chartering’s quality approach for the handling of railway cargoes almost since the company’s inception. With more than 30 locomotive shipments in the past two years, BBC has provided dual lift, remote delivery, serial shipment and other services, continually refining its expertise handling rolling stock. BBC is also an expert in the transportation of boats and yachts – a preferred carrier for yacht brokers the world over. With its selfgeared ships, it can load yachts without ever calling a port. This not only saves costs, but reduces the risk of damage by additional handling at a terminal facility. Occasionally, BBC moves other non-standard cargo piggyback, as was the case in 2015 when the 14,800 dwt BBC Sapphire piggybacked two retired German submarines from Germany to the Colombian military.

Pipe Carriage BBC Chartering has built a solid business as a pipe carrier. Its vessels provide large, box-shaped cargo holds to minimize broken stowage, adjustable tween-decks to adapt for cargo requirements, and hatch covers that open fully for easy positioning of any length or diameter of pipe. BBC keys in on selecting the most appropriate stowage, planning for acceleration and friction, filling gaps, full stowage between side panels of hold, stowage to provide even cargo surfaces, and careful handling with damage-free lashing. The care invested – which includes conceiving, tailoring and vetting every possible pipe storage scenario – has built BBC’s carriage and feeding business for all types of pipe. It uses pipe hooks to allow for highly efficient loading and unloading operations while focusing on incident-free operations. The world’s leading pipe manufacturers rely on BBC Chartering’s solutions to capture value on volume contracts, and, major EPCs utilize BBC’s dedicated project services providing risk managed offshore stowage and feeding solutions.

from the kickoff ‌ managed quality project services fill offshore void There is a new player on the BBC Chartering team, brought in to beef up the offensive line for big league projects developed around the globe. That player is called Managed Quality Project Services – a value-added approach to ocean transportation that integrates transportation planning into the project master plan at the earliest stages. It is proving especially prudent for offshore projects, but is also useful for a broader range of customer requests. If both cargo value and risks are high, a managed quality approach may be indispensable.

Engage Early – Focus on Performance, Quality and Costs – Execute BBC dedicates a project team to manage ocean transportation from tendering to execution. Project essentials and key challenges are defined, and reliable project-specific solutions are developed. The client’s and BBC’s project teams collaborate on how the project should be delivered to drive out cost, mitigate risks and ensure on-time deliveries.

Congo River Canyon Crossing Project (CRX) – Pipe Feeding and Storage Overview: For Angola’s economy and people, the CRX project was monumental. It was a cornerstone in the nation’s development and commercialization of its natural gas resources. The CRX includes an 81-mile pipeline originating at South Nemba platform, about 37 miles offshore, and terminating at Angola’s gas liquefaction plant, ALNG, located in northwest Angola. Cabinda Gulf Oil Co. contracted turnkey oil and gas contractor Saipem to provide EPC and installation services for 110 kilometers of subsea pipelines, subsea spools, as well as trenching and crossing works in water depths up to 117 meters. BBC Chartering was selected maritime transport partner to provide pipe feeding and offshore storage solutions for several stages of the project. Challenge: Large Loads – Limited Space. The project’s shallow water pipe-laying barge, the S355, employed a four-point anchor and winch mooring system to stay in position at sea. That meant the barge could only berth vessels up to 83 meters long, to fit between the mooring lines.

Solution: BBC Chartering provided a three-vessel solution. The BBC Germany was deployed as ‘pipe mother vessel’, charged with discharge operations in safe offshore waters; and, two 82.5-metre pipe-feeder vessels, the Saxum and Barbarossa, were tasked to supply pipes from the mother vessel to the pipe-laying barge. After loading pipe in Leith, Scotland, all three vessels sailed to Luanda Bay, Angola to provide onsite services. BBC’s Christoph Krüder said BBC Chartering vessels feedered a total of 10,000 tonnes of pipes, finishing in 2013. The success of the first phase led BBC Chartering into a second phase. This time three vessels – Skaftafell, BBC Thames and HR Marion – supplied 35,000 tonnes of pipe to support installation works performed in deeper water by pipe-layer platform Castoro 7. This assignment included lifting trials at a potential new pipe-transfer location that ultimately proved unfavorable, but BBC was ready with a fail-safe location, and the work was completed in a timely manner.

An ocean transportation partner that works with the shipper to find ways to reduce costs is a relatively new phenomenon. But with BBC’s integrated supply chain, operations can now be effectively aligned with client project priorities. Everyone from the engineers to the port captain to the agents can feed advice into planning, weaving control of operations and risks into the fabric of the operation, and genuinely adding value by avoiding unnecessary expenditures. BBC’s project managers coordinate tasks according to a project management plan, paying close attention to the quality of deliverables from all contractors. The project manager oversees the defined requirements, the systems design and development, and the implementation of a seamless operation and project performance. Quality, risks, schedule, costs and operational requirements are monitored to ensure that the overall project status can be achieved and early warnings can be issued where applicable.

A third pipe-feeding and offshore-storage assignment ensued for the Mafumeira project off the shores of Angola. The region clearly holds ongoing potential.

Macedon Subsea SURF Project

Cape Sharp Tidal Project

Cape Sharp Tidal Project, Bay of Fundy, Canada – Heavy-Lift Installation Assistance Overview: Cape Sharp Tidal is a joint venture between Emera Inc. and OpenHydro in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. The project is expected to be a multiphase development that could eventually see a 300-megawatt output of clean energy. In November 2016, Cape Sharp deployed its 4-megawatt tidal array – the Open-Center Turbine, North America’s most powerful tidal turbine. The project made industry history by connecting the turbine to the Canadian grid 24 hours after deployment. Challenge: Oversize Cargo – High Tides. The task of loading and delivering heavy-lift and over-dimensional cargo was complicated by the Bay of Fundy’s notorious tidal range, which measures nine meters at Port Saint John. Solution: In early October 2016, the BBC Emerald loaded a 320-tonne turbine and 444-tonne foundation at a fabrication yard in Pictou, for discharge at Port Saint John. The BBC Emerald was chartered in by Hughes Offshore and Shipping Services Inc. The subsea base was floated alongside in Pictou and loaded from the water to the deck of BBC Emerald with an overhang

of 4 meters to starboard and 13 meters to port. This made the discharge of the base to shore in Saint John even more challenging considering the impressive local tide range. As a second element, the BBC Emerald met the installation barge Scotia Tide and removed the tidal project’s existing turbine from the work barge to the deck of the heavy-lift vessel for further transport and discharge to shore. The turbine had to be lifted vertically out of its foundation stanchions and moved into a horizontal orientation for stowage on deck. Lastly, a second turbine was discharged to the Scotia Tide for final installation. BBC’s planning for the job, which included many engineering hours, was performed on time and on budget to the full satisfaction of the client.

Macedon Subsea SURF Project, Australia – Cable Spooling Operations Overview: In July 2011, oilfield services firm McDermott International Inc. won the subsea contract for deepwater offshore engineering, construction and installation on the Macedon project. The Subsea, Umbilical, Riser and Flowlines contract was

McDermott‘s first SURF project in Australia. It included detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation and installation of a 48-mile pipeline, as well as the installation of subsea umbilicals and flexible flowlines in waters measuring up to 591 feet deep (about 180 meters). BBC Chartering was contracted to support the logistics and coordinate all aspects of this unique assignment through its project division. Challenge: Turnkey Project – Massive Magnitude. This was BBC Chartering’s first “turnkey project” coordinating all planning, engineering, manufacturing and transport. With operations that had to be managed over various locations in Europe, and a discharge port that involved triple banking vessels, the challenges were vast and varied. Successfully loading/transporting cables of considerable magnitude requires careful quality management, good collaboration and open communication not only with the client and onshore partners, but also with vessel and crew. Solution: The BBC Nordland was discharged in Batam (Indonesia) where the umbilical was spooled using a triple banking operation onto McDermott’s

Solution: In more than 30 shipments, BBC Chartering moved about 200,000 cubic meters of cargo for Heerema and BP. The deliveries included port equipment for the marine construction support base, steel and pipes, and other critical components such as inline and flowline tee assemblies, and upper/lower riser components. Working together with Heerema and Panalpina, BBC contributed a high degree of flexibility and the availability of appropriate tonnage over the length of the contract period. Comprehensive work was delivered by BBC Chartering documenting relevant aspects of the work, including the provisioning of manuals for lashing and lifting, for weight spreading and respective risk assessments, as per oil and gas standards. PSVM Project

Delivering More Value to Clients Challenge: Timely Deliveries – Quality Driven. Supply chain issues for the Guara-Lula represented ongoing challenges for the project owners. Negative publicity added pressure to manage expectations quickly and competently. Solution: BBC Chartering initially provided the Stoertebeker as a pipe feeder vessel to Saipem. Then it added the BBC Germany (first busy as an intra-European heavy-lift shuttle to bring together a total of 32 reels to Arendal; the reels were brought by another vessel to South America), and the BBC Citrine, which loaded time critical components – a module and a pressure tank – in Batam, Indonesia for delivery to Angra dos Reis, Brazil. The BBC Citrine is a newer 14,800-dwt BBC Amber-type heavy-lift vessel that features two 400-tonne crane lift capability. With a 200-tonne module and 150-tonne tank, the load and discharge were relatively lightweight and executed safely and efficiently. High-quality execution and performance were the mainstay of this project.

PSVM Project, Angola – Pipe Feeding and Storage Overview: The Plutao, Saturno, Venus and Marte (PSVM) project is one of the major hub oilfield developments located off Angola’s shores. It is situated 400 kilometers from Luanda, in waters from 1,500 to 2,500 meters deep. BP is the operator, with project partners including ExxonMobil, Sonangol, Statoil, Marathon and TEPA. In 2009, Heerema Marine Contractors was awarded the contract for the risers and production flowlines on the PSVM development, which included engineering, procurement, construction, installation and testing of the pipe-in-pipe production flowlines, service flowlines and vertical riser systems. Together with Panalpina, BBC Chartering secured shipping capacity for this first field development. Challenge: Ambitious Scope – Teamwork. High-volume broad-based shipping services over an 18-month period required a collaborative environment.

uncommon commitment volume contracts reduce risk while cultivating excellence Transportation management has taken a cue from infrastructure projects in recent years and moved toward a life-cycle management perspective. There is an important reason for that: it allows carriers to gain valuable insight into their customers’ ongoing needs, helps grow an existing customer relationship, and cultivates exceptional service by identifying opportunities for adding value to the customer equation at key points in time. Taking a more proactive and personalized approach to total project transportation needs is an emerging specialization at BBC. And using the same longer-term approach, BBC is adding strategic value via volume contracting. There is great opportunity for EPCs, project forwarders, and shippers of varied cargoes to set up more enduring relationships to their decided advantage. In a highly competitive market for project shipping, BBC Chartering has generated numerous high-volume, multiple shipment contracts. Experience in developing efficient, safe and cost-com-

petitive services on risk-managed, high-impact, high-volume projects is the best indicator of future success. In each strategic volume contract BBC Chartering implements a customer-centric project organization. Customers have one single point of contact to discuss their schedules and procurement plan updates, technical issues, and so on. The appointed chartering manager coordinates internally to ensure mission critical resources are provided throughout the project’s execution. The designee is backed by a global team of operations, engineering, cargo and Health, Safety, Environment and Quality experts who ensure premier preparation, execution, and delivery of the service. In recent years, project shipping has become a premium service as opposed to a mere shipping company model. BBC is uniquely positioned to perform high-impact projects requiring both diligent planning and a flexible allocation of carrier’s resources.

Competitive Advantage: Bal said Antwerp’s central location and exceptional hinterland connections by rail, road and river provide a fundamental advantage. Modern port and terminal facilities, expert employees, productivity and the enormous range of services for any kind of cargo within the breakbulk sector define BBC’s competitive advantage and business model via Antwerp, Bal said.

pivotal

project cargo ports

The cargo almost always chooses the port. BBC Chartering has worked wisely, rolling out its world presence to situate management, booking and chartering offices in places where EPCs and shippers need them most. But when it comes to ports of call, BBC recognizes that projects and cargo will be prime port determinants. The same applies to hub development. As for any niche business, the economies of scale generated by hubbing eventually help project cargo self-select certain ports and terminals for heavy volumes of business. For some years now, Houston’s project cargo and breakbulk has grown steadily, transforming it into a hub for the Americas. In Europe, where BBC’s vessels have been foundational to industry growth, Antwerp’s project cargo and breakbulk industry has risen to the top. BBC Chartering vessels are frequent visitors to terminals around the world. Excellent partnerships in key ports can enhance safe, reliable and efficient handling for any cargo operation.

Antwerp Hub In 2012, BBC Chartering opened a booking office in Antwerp, Belgium, augmenting its already considerable presence in the port city. Antwerp is an important port for charters due in part to excellent hinterland connections. It is also a central commercial hub for BBC Chartering’s liner activities to South America and the Far East, and is an active port for operations. The booking office decision foresaw continued growth in the area, and strengthened BBC Chartering’s commercial presence in the Benelux market. In 2016, BBC Chartering Belgium N.V. handled about 125 fixtures with 78 port calls. BBC Chartering Belgium provides a direct point of access to leading edge shipping solutions. Managing Director Sandra Bal said the focus is to provide strong added value to BBC’s worldwide activities. Market: “We target sales within the Antwerp trade, especially on the South America East and West coast liner services, U.S. Gulf liner service, and Far East liner services. But beyond that, as a worldwide carrier, we are privileged to work with any party from any place in the world under our apac (any port, any cargo) service,” Bal said. Antwerp-based global project freight forwarders comprise the largest segment of BBC Belgium’s business.

BBC Chartering 20th Anniversary Issue

“Because we are never bound to vessels, but instead can choose out of a pool of vessels which open up in the north European continent, BBC can assure the trade a suitable vessel within an appropriate time frame,” Bal said. Cargo: While the top commodity is inbound steel, BBC’s project cargoes, heavy-lifts and out-of-gauge cargo, as well as bulk handlings, are extensive at the port of Antwerp. Services: BBC operates one sailing per month out of Antwerp to the South America West Coast, and two to the South America East Coast. The ports of call rotate with the cargo fixtures arranged, but Rio De Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, Puerto Angamos appear on rosters regularly. BBC also offers one monthly sailing to the Far East with ports dependent on spot business, and with the recent pickup in the Middle East, BBC offers a nearly monthly sailing to the Persian Gulf. Building on BBC’s volume contract with Airbus, it offers a monthly sailing into the U.S. Gulf as well. While liner/semi-liner services are in important part of BBC’s appeal, the company’s apac services offer charterers tramp or affreightment arrangements as well, to carry out a broader range of transport assignments. Berths: BBC’s home berth is Katoennatie – Quay 361, with two heavy-lift cranes of 208 tonnes each, which can be used in tandem. They bring added value to BBC’s heavy-lift service, as heavy items can be delivered at the terminal far before vessel arrival (if required). Katoennatie also offers 200,000 square meters of open

storage, 60,000 square meters of covered warehousing, and a 2,000-meter berth. The facility provides a variety of rolling equipment with 45-tonne capacity as well as lifting equipment of 100 tonnes. Berth 361 provides plentiful storage for BBC’s stock in trade – its consumables for lashing and securing such as D-rings, halfpipes, lashing chains, tensioners, stopper plates and the like, as well as heavy-lift platforms and rigging materials, and construction steel for customized lashing or weight distribution.

Houston Hub Having a dedicated project terminal at the world‘s busiest project hub makes an important difference to shippers. In January 2015, BBC consolidated many of its Houston-based operations at Manchester Terminals. “Manchester was always important to us, but now we use it as our main hub,” said BBC Chartering USA’s President Per Petersen. “We were doing way too much terminal hopping, which is inefficient and very expensive. We looked long and worked hard to create this hub approach.” Manchester Terminals offers 72.5 acres on Houston ship channel, well-served by rail and highway, and with 3,200 linear feet of dock space. BBC has berthed and served up

to five vessels at the same time. Not only is Houston a cargo hub, it is also home to BBC’s largest booking office in the world. Cargo: BBC’s inbound/outbound cargo at Manchester Terminals is surprisingly well-balanced. The head haul used to be outbound, but, Petersen said, when oil prices started falling exports decreased and imports surged providing an in-out ratio now closing in on 50-50. Pipe, oil and gas, mining and power generation are all important customers. Markets: Inbound cargoes largely originate in the Far East, especially Korea and China. Outbound there is less uniformity; cargoes are being distributed worldwide. In 2016, 170 BBC ships called Manchester Terminals. The strong U.S. dollar has influenced BBC’s outbound markets, but because much of its activity is centered on the oil and gas sector, recent oil price stabilization is generating recovery and growth in cargoes. Competitive Advantage: BBC Chartering has priority handling and 24/7 service with subcontractors on up to five vessel berths at Manchester Terminals. Petersen said that the economies of scale generated by heavy ship volumes generate a price point out of Houston that is hard to beat. “Even export cargoes originating in Canada get funneled down to the Houston area,” he said. It is also a strategic port in terms of

location and flexibility, and with berth guarantees at Manchester there is no waiting time for vessels. It shortens potential waiting times outside the port, and cuts cost for standby and overtime work while at the terminal. Also, direct access to the workforce improves the general cargo handling quality. It increases the terminal’s utilization while granting clients flexibility on timing and other transactional aspects of their cargo operations. BBC also offers transshipments at Manchester Terminals. Freight from the Far East, for example, can transship onto a semi-liner service to South America. Of course, BBC still uses other ports in the Gulf as cargo or economics dictate. Services: BBC runs semi-liner “apac services” between Houston and the East Coast of South America, largely serving the oil and gas sector. Caytrans BBC, managed by Dan-Gulf Shipping, was created in 2006 and offers a regional weekly breakbulk service between Houston and Mobile to the North Coast of South America, the Caribbean and Central America. BBC Gulf Line is the newest service. Utilizing 20,000-dwt vessels with the ability to lift up to 700 tonnes, it offers two voyages per month leaving Veracruz, Houston and Mobile. Berths: Manchester Terminal offers warehousing, breakbulk and container facilities, light manufacturing and assembly operations, a designated foreign trade zone, and more than a million square feet of covered storage. Its 1,500-foot Houston Ship Channel dock and 1,700-foot Sims Bayou dock, can easily berth five vessels. Gulfstream Marine’s largest crane is a great asset: it is a floating institution nicknamed Big John and can provide 425 tonnes of lifting capacity. The terminals are also equipped with a large selection of shore cranes, including various crawler cranes up to 165 tonnes, top-loaders with 85,000-pound capacity, and forklifts up to 62,000-pound capacity.

Some cargoes or vessel charters don’t fit into any category. BBC is the global leader in ocean transport versatility, and as such has innumerable stories to share about unconventional charters and cargo. Each presented an extraordinary learning experience, contributing to the company’s breadth of experience and specialized knowledge base.

Case Study 1: Super Heavy Offshore Accommodation Module to Brazil

performed in China – the integral accommodation units for offshore workers were also made in China.

In BBC’s heaviest lift to date, the BBC Sapphire transported a 1,380-tonne living quarter module for a Petrobras FPSO offshore Brazil.

BBC loaded the first six-story-high housing module in Dalian, China, and successfully delivered it to Rio de Janeiro for Petrobas in 2014. The module was destined for the Lula Norte oil field.

An FPSO is a floating production, storage and offloading unit used by the offshore oil and gas industry to receive hydrocarbons, process them and store oil before transfer to tanker or pipeline. Like the Petrobas FPSOs – oil tanker conversions

Jimmy Jensen, technical director of BBC Chartering in Singapore, said the great weight necessitated loading by a floating crane. “It was a big challenge from the beginning, as we had to deal with many restrictions. For example, we were re-

stricted by draft, both in the loading and discharging port, but we also needed to load sufficient cargo to compensate for the relative high center of gravity for this shipment,” he said. The BBC team evaluated an open-hatchcover sailing, with loading on the tank-top level to lower the center of gravity. But in the end an on-hatch position was determined to be more suitable. Core technical challenges for a module with such oversized dimensions include finding a way to secure the unit. Calculations for weight spreading and sea-fastening were made under different scenarios.

Case Study 2: Transforming Berum into Ariane 5 Launch Observation Stage Galileo is the European Union’s global navigation satellite system, which aims to provide an independent high-precision positioning system for European nations. The first Galileo test satellite was launched in 2005, and the first satellite to be part of the operational system was launched in 2011. At the end of 2016, 18 satellites were in orbit, and some operational capability became available. The complete 30-satellite Galileo system is expected by 2020. On Nov. 17, 2016, an Ariane 5 heavy-lift rocket launched four full operational capability (FOC) Galileo satellites from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, into space. The 5,200-deadweight-ton Berum, part of BBC parent Briese Schiffahrt’s flexible global fleet, was there to observe the launch. Positioned in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred kilometers to the east of Kourou, it served as an observation stage for European Space Agency (ESA) technicians and their varied monitoring and communication devices and equipment. More commonly used to transport wind turbine rotors or perhaps yachts, the Berum enjoys a parallel life as an observation ship. When called, it quickly shifts its cargo at an appropriate port and then transforms into a floating high-tech station, sailing to very specific coordinates in the Atlantic as needed by the ESA. And special stoppers were designed that could only be placed in certain positions. Jensen said, “The biggest challenge, however, was to determine the optimal additional cargo which was required to attain both sufficient draft and stability for the voyage.” When asked about the secrets to success of this shipment, Jensen said, “I don’t think there are any secrets as such, but there is a lot of hard work involved. To prepare any operation, we need the most accurate drawings to work with and, wherever possible, we inspect the loading site and cargoes beforehand.”

“I don’t think there are any secrets as such, but there is a lot of hard work involved.” – Jimmy Jensen, technical director of BBC Chartering in Singapore

“This is, for us and the crew of the Berum, something special,” said Briese spokesperson Matthias Müller. The Berum has been used by the ESA ever since the third Galileo mission. Equipped with self-contained units to accommodate ESA technicians and their antenna and other equipment, the vessel and its crew play an important role. Just holding the vessel’s position steady so that sensitive measuring instruments can perform their precise functions can be a challenge. But, as Müller said, it brings a certain level of satisfaction, especially given the ESA loyalty to this particular ship for ongoing launches. The Berum crew look forward to their next mission with the ESA, slated for the spring of 2017.

BBC Chartering 20th Anniversary Issue

Case Study 3: BBC Scotland as Platform for Marine Exercises Operation Phoenix Express, is sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and facilitated by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet. The exercise is designed to improve regional cooperation, increase maritime domain awareness information-sharing practices and operational capabilities, in order to enhance safety and security in the Mediterranean Sea. In 2016, the nations that participated in Operation Phoenix Express were Algeria, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and the U.S. For exercise purposes the U.S. Military Sealift Command chartered the BBC Scotland to participate in the operation,

delivering an interesting change – at least for the seven-day charter period – to the lives of the sailors on board the multipurpose vessel.

BBC was nevertheless struck by the exceptional sight of two impressive submarines stowed atop the BBC Sapphire in late 2015. After being retired by the German Navy and modified for a new life, they were loaded in Kiel and moved to Colombia. The Intrepido and Indomable will serve the war against drug smuggling for the Columbian military.

The vessel and its crew were embedded in various scenarios representing the kind of real-life illegal trafficking issues that marine security forces have to face at sea. In many exercises the BBC Scotland was entered by each participating nation’s Navy forces and freed of the subversive elements who took control of vessel and crew in the training scenario. BBC was pleased to be a part of an effort designed to support safety and security at sea.

Case Study 4: Submarines Travel Piggyback No stranger to all manner of deck cargo,

Being modified in Kiel by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the 48-meter long and roughly 500-tonne submarines were lifted directly out of the water and stowed on deck of the BBC Sapphire. Also loading additional equipment in containers, the project was a noteworthy example of BBC Chartering’s ability to perform heavy-lift for unique transactions. They were offloaded at the port of Cartagena and soon ready to be deployed in Colombia’s ‘silent service’ in the Caribbean.

BBC as custodians of tomorrow The Intersection of Economic and Social Value BBC Chartering works hard to earn the trust of shippers, build its business base, and perform beyond expectations. In doing so it promulgates a culture where the pursuit of excellence intersects with ongoing education and, simply put, looking after each other, the business and the environment. BBC Chartering Korea Workshop and Luncheon

Tipping its hat to regional customs, history and holidays, BBC reaches out to shippers and maritime partners at a variety of events each year, including the Gallimarkt shipping gala, which builds on Northern Germany’s Volksfest – an annual event dating back to 1598 that honors the right to freely trade goods. In today’s world, global businesses cannot be solely focused on financial profitability. They must also focus on the greater good within their communities and the world in general. On the business side, BBC supports project development around the world, creating infrastructure that in turn helps build quality of life on every continent. BBC strives to be a good corporate citizen on land and at sea, taking social responsibility for its actions and activities, and getting behind many worthy causes. Global Freight Awards

Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Recognizing its responsibility as steward of its own resources, and the extended responsibility to create lasting change in business and society, BBC lives by nine core principles. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Engage for customer satisfaction. Ensure safe working conditions. Prevent harmful situations. Protection of the environment. BBC Chartering is a prominent exhibitor at Breakbulk events, as well as a significant supporter of educational programs for the events. At Breakbulk China, held March 13-16 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, BBC Chartering was honored as the “best educational booth” during the event. Booth judging was completed by five members of Breakbulk’s VIP Shipper Club, which includes the industry’s most prominent EPCs and cargo owners. The VIPs singled out BBC based on specific criteria for exhibitors’ educational role. BBC Chartering had a further presence at Breakbulk’s Shanghai event as David Lloreda Calero, commercial manager, Shanghai office, participated on a panel that explored alternatives for heavy cargo ocean transport, with representatives of container and roll-on, roll-off shipping lines.

Per Petersen

On the Ground in Houston, USA BBC Chartering USA, LLC Phone: +1 713 668 4020 houston@bbc-chartering.com

The North American market has always been important to BBC, and always will be.

is extremely important in order to maximize utilization of our fleet,” Petersen said.

Per Petersen has been with BBC USA since its inception in 2001, solidifying the link between the Americas and Europe. The hub location directs the chartering, operations, sales and marketing, and technical responsibilities for vessels calling the U.S.

Petersen is an avid cyclist. One of his favorite rides is the yearly MS150 ride from Houston to Austin, which supports the Multiple Sclerosis Society. “Every year about 13,000 riders make the trek from Houston to Austin. This is a very important fund-raiser and each rider has to pledge to raise a minimum of US$400 in order to participate. I made a promise to myself when I started in 2002 to keep riding until team BBC has raised US$1 million. We still have a way to go, a little over US$300,000, but we will keep pedaling until we find a cure,” he said.

In 16 years, he has seen substantial development and growth of project cargo and breakbulk in the North American market. He has known occasional volatility in the markets, usually at the hands of the oil and gas sector. While a carrier can’t pull cargo out of thin air, Petersen and his team stick closely to the oil and gas market to keep up to date on future investment for exploration, which will return some import/export equilibrium to the market. Petersen said, “We’re in direct contact with most of the major oil companies and EPCs, and are available to meet with them on short notice to discuss new or ongoing projects/shipments and work out any issues they might have.” The office also has a dedicated sales group that, in addition to covering the local market, travels widely across North America to promote and expand the BBC brand. The BBC Houston office is an integral part of the BBC organization. “We’re in daily communication with the rest of the main hubs (Leer, Singapore, Sao Paulo, etc.) in order to allocate ships and cargoes in accordance with local and worldwide needs. This

That level of persistence and passion pays in personal pursuits and business. Petersen’s leadership is sure to inspire movement for years to come.

Worldwide, BBC is mindful of its corporate citizenship, taking social responsibility for its actions and activities, and supporting many worthy causes. Jones, an ardent animal lover and proponent of pet adoption, said the Sao Paolo office was recently involved in finding homes for a litter of stray puppies. “This experience was very rewarding and heartwarming for all of us,” she said.

Natalie Jones has been managing director ever since. She said the company has always worked to build strong local ties via local offices assigning local people to interact with and serve the market. “This way, we have valuable cultural interaction between our clients and representatives, and we have also forged stronger relationships and bonds between these groups

Cargoes originating on either the East or West coasts of South America will find space on sailings as often as weekly. Coverage is offered to Central America, U.S. Gulf, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Far East and to Oceania, as well as on the trans-Pacific. Apac services are the BBC Americana Line and BBC Andino Express Line (both northbound), Caytrans BBC-Northbound and the BBC South America-Middle East Service.

Back in 2004, BBC recognized fresh growth prospects in the Far East market and responded by creating Asia Project Chartering (APC), a joint venture with Clipper Projects. APC became BBC Chartering Singapore in 2009, and is now the regional head office for the Middle East, Asia and Australia/Pacific region, supported by 10 offices scattered across the region.

“We wish to maintain our position as the largest carrier within the Far East/Middle East/Australia region. But more than that, we wish to become an integrated part of our clients’ logistics solutions and supply chains,” Schoennemann said. The goal is for clients to come to BBC Chartering first, for tailor-made solutions and other options to fulfill their transport requirements.

In BBC’s early years, its main trading focus was between Europe and North and South America. Nowadays, BBC leads the market in the Far East region with the largest fleet and the greatest local presence. Lars Schoennemann said, “We cover a huge area, but with more than 30 sales and commercial people, we still manage to be very local within each market.”

The new monthly A-NZ apac service between Asia and New Zealand is the latest addition.

Matteo Fortuna didn’t start out to manage BBC Chartering’s Mediterranean operations. He graduated in literature and medieval history, but happenstance and skill brought him to shipping. One day, perhaps when his two young children are grown, he hopes to find time to write.

In the meantime, his Genoa office is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and its growth has been rapid. It began as a customer service center for Italian clients, became the market leader in the region, and now also operates the BBC fleet throughout the Mediterranean and Africa. “We increased from three to 20 employees and we have chartering, sales, operations, technical and agency departments now,” Fortuna said. While BBC’s large, flexible fleet has been the key to growth, Fortuna credits reliability, nurtured by attentive personal relationships, as being the top selling point over the years. “In an electronic and globalized world, we like to keep a personal relationship with EPCs, forwarders and cargo owners. This is typical of our culture and continues to

add value for us,” Fortuna said. “If we grow rapidly for another 20 years, I will still work hard to maintain our ‘human touch’. Respect for different cultures and different ways of approaching life and work are integral to our ethic.” The Genoa office is largely responsible for recasting BBC’s business model in the Mediterranean. From simply offloading and ballasting or loading cargo onto vessels in transit 10 years ago, to a full slate of Mediterranean activities, charters, and semi-liner services today, BBC Genoa now oversees about 10 percent of the company’s global turnover.

What Siemens likes about going to work each day is the level of expertise and commitment he sees from his associates. “There is great knowledge, spirit, reliability and teamwork among the colleagues in offices all over the world,” he said. To a certain extent, there is a Pygmalion effect inherent in the BBC Chartering culture: Siemens expects great things from his colleagues and associates, and they never disappoint. At headquarters in Leer, Siemens and his team furnish optimal solutions for almost any kind of transport in the project/ breakbulk/bulk/neobulk segments. He banks on the versatility of the BBC fleet as well as the hands-on, fast decision and quick-response mentality which comes from BBC’s structure as a privately owned company. Siemens thinks of BBC Chartering and his colleagues as family. “It is a big part of my life, as I have been part of the team from almost the beginning and helped to create what BBC Chartering is today,” he said. Siemens thrives on the challenges that cross his desk each day, and enjoys working out creative solutions. He looks forward to meeting people of different nationalities and cultures around the world because he deems them responsible for “broadening his horizon,” personally and professionally.

He will be glad when the industry finishes “circumnavigating the current stormy seas,” because he knows with greater sectoral stability, BBC will capitalize on its foundation of innovation and versatility, and continue to develop its reliability and resources as the top project cargo carrier for clients around the world for many years to come.

apac services from Europe / Continent BBC Chartering offers excellent coverage for cargoes from the Continent and Baltic, with up to weekly sailings to North America East Coast, U.S. Gulf, Central America, South America, Africa, Middle East, Far East and to Oceania. The apac service system markets high frequency services also know as the BBC Americana Line European Service, the BBC Andino Express Line European Service, and the BBC Euro Asia Express Line Eastbound. The latter connects Far East and Southeast Asian destinations with European markets and vice versa. The Americana and Andino westbound services provide regular monthly transports for project and heavylift cargo, consolidating cargo from the ports of Hamburg, Aberdeen, Antwerp and Bilbao as well as other ports en route on an inducement basis.

Russian Services Cargoes within Europe are able to use steady fleet capacity traveling between European ports. BBC offers intra-Europe heavy-lifts, coastal services, as well as navigation-restricted services into main Russian water ways such as the Volga River system, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, and the Arctic Sea.

Twelve years later, Dubai has evolved into an integral part of BBC’s global team. It has built up a trusted and high-performance base of business for project cargo, breakbulk and other general cargo transportation, and has established the BBC shipping brand across the region. Dennis Bandura said BBC Dubai’s success is partly attributable to BBC’s foresight. “We were able to capitalize on our ‘early bird’ entrance into the market. And secondly … our size. Although it is to some extent more difficult to feed a large fleet, the flexibility the numbers give you is amazing.” The region has tended toward imports, but, Bandura noted, there have been

interesting recent shifts in production and exports, especially from the Persian Gulf and India. Bandura has held the helm at BBC Dubai since its inception – long enough, he said, that it is sometimes hard to differentiate himself from the company. “It gets in your blood,” he said. He likes the dynamic environment, and said, in his time in Dubai, he has learned that nothing falls “outside of normal.”
