SUPPORTING OUR WORK Funder Spotlights
Cisco Systems
Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation
Cisco continues to generously fund Breakthrough’s technology innovations, including the development of the Breakthrough Alumni Portal, an online hub that hosts summer resources for teaching fellows and serves as a virtual community for teaching fellow alumni. With Cisco’s support, Breakthrough is building an online space for over 40,000 teaching fellow alumni to connect with Pipeline Partners, research job opportunities, and network with one another.
Thanks to the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, Breakthrough continues to provide excellent training and support to novice teaching fellows. Through rigorous eight-day training sessions, Breakthrough teaching fellows learn the basics of building classroom culture, instructional techniques, and active participation strategies so that all Breakthrough students can succeed. In 2016, Breakthrough recruited and trained 993 diverse and motivated teaching fellows across the country.
Michael and Susan Dell Foundation
Thanks to a generous grant from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Breakthrough is able to focus on the important work of increasing college persistence rates. Breakthrough students already enter college at a higher rate than their peers; however, research shows that many students struggle to graduate from college within six years. With support from the Dell Foundation, Breakthrough will expand programming to support students for a full 12 years, from sixth grade through college graduation.

OUR STUDENTS Breakthrough’s Highly Motivated Scholars
Breakthrough serves more than 5,000 middle-school students each year in our summer programs. Breakthrough students are dedicated scholars who aspire to go to college but often attend under-resourced schools. They commit multiple, consecutive summers to an all-day, sixweek summer program, and supplement their school-year studies with ongoing enrichment. They attend rigorous academic classes in math, science, reading, and writing, and participate in engaging electives and extracurricular activities. Research shows that students from lower-income backgrounds can lose up to two months of math and lit-
eracy skills over the summer. Summer after summer, these losses compound, making the journey from middle school to high-school graduation and college much more difficult. At Breakthrough, our students work hard each summer in Common-Core aligned academic classes, leading to intellectual growth and contributing to their long-term academic success.

OUR INSTRUCTORS Breakthrough’s Accomplished Educators As the premier pre-professional teacher residency program in the country, Breakthrough offers hard-working undergraduates the opportunity to try teaching out for a summer. During the nine-week residency, Breakthrough teaching fellows receive over 100 hours of teaching and leadership training, including 75 hours of lead classroom experience. Many return to teach the following year, and nearly 75% go on to careers in education.

Last summer, we hosted 172 professional educators as instructional coaches (ICs). Working directly with our teaching fellows, they provide critical mentorship while they hone their skills. As professional development, the Breakthrough summer is invaluable. 99% of instructional coaches agreed they grew as educators and 98% grew their leadership skills.

Breakthrough San Francisco at SF Day School
About Breakthrough Breakthrough’s core 6-year program model consists of summer and school-year programs, through which we increase academic opportunity for highly motivated, underserved middle- and high-school students, putting them on the path to college. We are also the largest pre-service teacher-training program in the country, providing best-in-class pre-professional training nearly 1,000 undergraduate teaching fellows each year. As part of this commitment to developing the next generation of teachers, we offer leadership residencies for professional educators, who support our teaching fellows as instructional coaches. Breakthrough has been improving educational outcomes since 1978, with the establishment of a single site at University High School in San Francisco. Over the next 20 years, Breakthrough grew through a collective of independent sites across the country. Today, the Breakthrough national office located in Oakland, CA serves Breakthrough constituencies across a collaborative network of 25 affiliates throughout the U.S. and in Hong Kong by providing program standards, curricula, evaluation tools, and teaching fellow recruitment. Breakthrough affiliates carry out direct services to students, teaching fellows, and instructional coaches in their localities.
Our Mission Breakthrough pursues a dual mission to: 1) Increase academic opportunity for highly motivated, underserved students and get them into college ready to succeed; and 2) Inspire and develop the next generation of teachers and educational leaders.
