YOUR GREATEST GIFT?
SAVING FUTURE GENERATIONS FROM CURRENTLY INCURABLE CANCERS
A GIFT IN YOUR WILL; YOUR GREATEST GIFT
If there was a way you could put your arms around your future family, to protect them and keep them safe, you’d do it, right? And what if, at the same time, you could give an amazing gift to the world...?
When you remember Breakthrough Cancer Research in your will, you do both. You bring the world a step closer to achieving 100% survival for 100% of cancers.
A gift in your will can fund vital research to improve survival rates for all, educate people about cancer, and find new treatments. It means future generations – your loved ones – have a chance of surviving currently incurable cancers. You can care for your future family and help find new ways to beat cancers with some of the lowest survival rates.
Protecting your family by remembering Breakthrough Cancer Research in your will could also be your greatest gift to the world.
Please, will you consider leaving a gift in your will to Breakthrough Cancer Research?
Orla Dolan Chief Executive, Breakthrough Cancer Research
BETTER FUTURES, SOONER – WITH YOU
Imagine being told that their treatment hasn’t worked and then being told there’s nothing left to try; the cure for your cancer does not exist. This worst day is exactly what we are working to stop.
We want a world where no one ever has to hear those words. That means a world where we don’t talk about ‘good prognosis cancers’ and ‘poor prognosis cancers’. It’s a world where 100% survival for 100% of cancers is achievable – if research is adequately funded.
With your support, we can disrupt cancer’s future and save lives. One breakthrough at a time,
we’ll tackle the most difficult to cure cancers –and deliver better futures, sooner.
We’re on a mission. And we need you on our side.
A gift in your will can fund world class research into cancers which are currently incurable, so more people will live longer, and be better able to return to the lives they had before cancer, with fewer long-term symptoms or after effects.
Your support is vital. It’s your gift to the world and your future family.

What’s the worst thing a family can face? Many people say it’s being told that they, or a loved one, has cancer. But in fact, that isn’t the worst thing for many people.
YOUR GIFT TO THE WORLD, YOUR IMPACT
Choosing who to include in your will is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. By remembering Breakthrough Cancer Research, you’ll help find ways to save the people whose lives will be heartbreakingly shortened by cancer.
YOU’LL PROGRESS RESEARCH INTO THE MOST DIFFICULT TO CURE CANCERS
Your legacy gift will fund world class researchers as they tackle poor prognosis cancers and those which are currently incurable. You’ll fund vital research into the role of the immune system in cancer development, and help fund ways to harness the immune system to control and eradicate cancers.
YOU’LL RAISE AWARENESS OF POOR PROGNOSIS CANCERS
With your support, more people will be educated on the risks of cancer and know how to protect
themselves. You’ll fund essential collaboration with partners to raise the profile of the most difficult to cure cancers, run conferences to share expertise, and develop evidenced based nutritional information and supports for patients.
YOU’LL HELP FIND NEW TREATMENTS.
A gift in your will can help discover and develop new therapies and surgical approaches to help cancer patients live longer and better. Your investment will spark innovation at every stage, from first diagnosis to treatment, through to clinical trials and palliative care.

Gemma Fell, who chose to remember Breakthrough Cancer Research in her will following the death of her son Charlie in 2015.
I HOPE ONE DAY THERE WILL BE A CURE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER.”
PART OF THE CANCER-BEATING TEAM: YOU’LL JOIN OTHER GENEROUS SUPPORTERS
Gemma Fell’s son Charlie was in his early 40s, a successful financial journalist and lecturer, when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It’s one of the most deadly diseases.
Pancreatic cancer is rare, affecting around five in 10,000 people. But 76% of people who have it will die within a year. It’s in the top five cancers for death rates. And patients’ chances of survival haven’t significantly improved in 50 years.
But Charlie knew none of this when he was diagnosed. He and his brother John spent more than two years researching pancreatic cancer – and it wasn’t long before they came across Breakthrough Cancer Research.
Just days before his death, Charlie gave a lecture about the need for more research into pancreatic cancer. His message was clear: “We need to create a voice for this deadly disease, and shout loudly if anything is to change.” In October 2015, two months after Charlie’s death, we created a fellowship in his name to continue vital research.
For Gemma Fell, the fellowship post is a key way to remember her son. But, importantly, she’s also decided to leave a gift in her will to Breakthrough Cancer Research.
“Pancreatic cancer was new to us, but suddenly we had all these links to Breakthrough Cancer Research and we felt very connected and supported,” said Gemma. “I am so grateful for the way Charlie has been remembered through the research fellowship.
I think Charlie would have wanted me to leave a gift in my will to this work. I know he remembered Breakthrough Cancer Research in his will. And I hope that one day there will be a cure for pancreatic cancer.”
ONE MAN’S GREATEST GIFT YOU CAN CONTINUE THE VISION FOR BEATING CANCER
Prof O’Sullivan could treat only one patient at a time, painstakingly performing the most cutting edge surgical procedures to beat cancer. But more importantly, he was limited by what was known about cancer.
As a maverick, outside-the-box thinker, Prof O’Sullivan understood that patients were dying due to the spread of cancer and the lack of ways to combat that. He knew only one thing could change things for good: research.
But Prof O’Sullivan didn’t want to wait for someone else to make the medical breakthroughs that would yield new treatments. And he saw no reason why a small team in south-west Ireland couldn’t revolutionise cancer care. So in 1995, Prof O’Sullivan initially founded a small research group at the Mercy Hospital which expanded into Cork Cancer Research Centre in 1999 and became a national effort in 2011 when Breakthrough Cancer Research was launched.
Today, our approach is just as impatient and dynamic as Prof O’Sullivan’s – and we still don’t take no for an answer.
n An international scientific advisory group sets priorities to ensure our work has the greatest impact.
n We connect doctors, patients and researchers to identify clinical challenges and develop solutions.
n An agile grant funding process means progress is accelerated for faster results.
n Innovative funding solutions means we can overcome obstacles to get research into the lab.
n Our committed teams focus on patients and families, putting the patient and their needs first.
n We only fund projects with clear end benefits for patients – treatments and prevention.
Prof O’Sullivan remained a director at Breakthrough Cancer Research until his death in 2012. His founding vision, to disrupt cancer’s future one breakthrough at a time, still drives this organisation. His maverick approach to finding smart ideas and funding them quickly means we’ll get to 100% survival sooner.
One man’s legacy, to invest in research for the benefit of future families, lives on.
As one of Ireland’s top surgeons, Prof Gerry O’Sullivan saved plenty of lives with his skill and knowledge. But there was a limit to what he could do, and he knew it...
A way to care for your future family and beat the most difficult to cure cancers. Could a gift in your will be your greatest gift to the world?
THE DIFFERENCE LEGACIES CAN MAKE
The development of new treatments for the hardest-to-cure cancers, bringing hope to many families: that’s the legacy of Dr Raymond Fielding, who died in 2016.
In his lifetime, Dr Fielding regularly saw patients with cancer – but nothing could prepare him for seeing his beloved wife slowly die from the disease. It spurred him on to make a difference to future families, by leaving a gift in his will to Breakthrough Cancer Research.
“I want to spare other people from the pain I feel every day of losing my life partner much too soon through cancer,” Dr Fielding told us at the time. “It’s only through research that we’ll keep the people we love alive with us for longer.”
Following his death, Dr Fielding’s gift helped to fund the development of new therapeutic approaches for the hardest-to-treat cancers. Thanks to Dr Fielding, the brightest research staff were able to make progress through collaboration, rigorous testing and state of the art lab work.
HOW TO LEAVE A GIFT IN YOUR WILL
There are several ways to leave a gift in your will.
n A residuary gift is the remainder of the estate once other gifts and payments have been made. This is popular because it takes care of your loved ones first and is not devalued by inflation
n A pecuniary gift is a fixed sum which could decrease over time as the cost of living increases
n A specific gift is a particular named item, for example a piece of jewellery
n A reversionary gift allows you to leave assets for the care of a loved one for the duration of their life. When they die, your gift will then go to your chosen beneficiary
Most charitable gifts in wills are also tax free, and you may be able to reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable.
Your solicitor can give you more advice.
