Anticipated Revenue Growth over the Next Year:

In 2013, I was a single mom of 3 and my schedule was crazy. Between running around to two different schools and a daycare while fighting traffic to get to and from work; I was exhausted (and I looked like it). When I was able to carve out a little time to enhance my natural beauty, every beauty salon had a “no children allowed unless they are being serviced policy”, they didn’t offer appointments during the times I had available, or they would relegate me to sitting in the middle of a store bare faced as I received services and they answered the many questions posed by other customers concerning how they were going to cover my over 30 blemishes. Needless to say, I knew there had to be a better way. So, I created what I wanted to see! Starting in the dining room of my home, I created a business that allowed busy professionals like me to receive the make-up services that they wanted at the time that worked best for them, all while bringing the kids with them; and every now and again I would slip them a plate of the night’s dinner to take home with them.

Accomplishments: Since CCBC’s Center for Business Innovation Business Plan Competition we have: • Been named one of Baltimore’s Top 25 Women to Watch • Been named one of Technical.ly’s Reallist Connectors • Been named one of Maryland’s Top 100 MBE’s • Won over 100,000 in cash and prizes pitching our business for funding • Worked with Nike, Visa, Experian, NAACP, Lancome, and Black Girl Ventures. • Been featured on a mural in D.C. for Black Women Founders • Wrote and self-published “So You Want to Pitch” a workbook to help business owners plan, prepare, and pitch for funding. • Participated in Vital Voices VV Grow program and spoke to business women from all over the world in Amsterdam.

Established 2013

Accessmatized is a full service make-up artistry company that provides professional, reliable, and multifaceted services that meet the needs of our clients’ busy schedules while helping to facilitate their ability to be their most confident selves. To do this, we offer appointments as early as 4am and as late as 11pm; as well as giving our clients service location options to include a location of their choosing or private make-up studio. In 2014 we became the first make-up artistry business in the DMV to offer mobile services via Pretty Mobile Baltimore. Pretty was a 16-passenger wheelchair equipped vehicle that we transformed to hold up to 3 artists, 9 clients, with a dressing room, refreshment station, and wifi. In 2019, we further expanded our offerings by launching KiKi Thunda cosmetics, a small batch manufacturing company which we created to launch our line of highly pigmented, long lasting, water resistant, smudge proof liquid matte lipsticks. Our cosmetics line solved the problem that most women who sat in our chairs had, ensuring that their lipstick would last all day, further extending our mission to ensure that our busy clients feel their most confident selves after receiving services and/or using our products.

How has the seed money and support from CBI helped you and your business? We have been fortunate to receive seed money and support from CBI since 2015. We were able to use funds to support the fabrication of our mobile make-up unit as well as tap in to CCBC Marketing students to assist with the creation of our website. In 2019, we participated in the alumni pitch competition and used funds we received to develop and launch lip glosses which were an extension of our newly launched product line. We, again, was fortunate enough to work with CCBC marketing students who developed a marketing plan for us. We utilized a number of their recommendations to grow our product offerings. During COVID we tapped in to funding for existing businesses and was able to purchase our own labeling machine, which successfully decreased our packaging expenses by 35% and allowed us to bring products to market faster as we no longer had to wait for custom labels to be created and shipped to us.

Plans for Growing the Business After reviewing our financials from 2021 we realized that there is a market for corporate branding services. In 2021 we were contracted to provide make-up and styling services for Nike, Experian, Black Girl Ventures, and Visa. Working with these brands gave us invaluable experience and opened the door for us to work with small business owners who are looking to rebrand, as well as, working on set with organizations like the NAACP and Lancome who need “glam” services. We are now contracting with other make-up artists, hair stylists, and nail technicians to provide “glam suite” and branding services to corporate clients. In addition, we are taking advantage of VR/AR technology and have begun the work of creating the “Thundaverse” and immersive experience that will allow users to interact, learn about, and purchase products and services through 2D and 3D devices.

Finally, our participation in the new Accelerator program has given us the opportunity to have the mentorship and guidance that we so desperately need as we scale. In addition, funds that we have received has allowed us to have professional product images and videos created for our brand to extend our marketing reach.

Nicholas’ Story

We do business the old-fashioned way. We believe a handshake is better than a contract. We offer premium quality products tested by first responders and proudly made in the USA so that we can support manufacturers in the greatest country on God’s green Earth.

It all started when a business owner reached out to me for advice on buying first aid supplies for his company. He realized that I was a trained first responder with the police and had Marine Corps experience so he knew I could potentially steer him in the right direction.

We create customized solutions for companies and ensure employees have the protection they deserve. We also sell fully stocked American-made first aid cabinets.

I plan to expand my territory to include businesses in York, PA.

Our Culture Transparency: There are no hidden fees or charges on our invoices.

Car dealerships and warehouses are my ideal customers.

Customer Service Problems are resolved the same day they are received.

I have also created an Amazon store to get national brand recognition.

Every big company the owner called refused to sell supplies unless they signed a contract to purchase more. I had worked for America’s largest first aid and safety company and managed first aid programs for over 1,000 companies for years, including BGE, Siemens, and SRA international and I knew the industry well. I decided to do something about it and Alpha Bravo First Aid was born with a handshake and a promise to get businesses high-quality supplies as quickly and easily as possible with less barrier to entry.

In early 2021, I was inspired to begin Around the Way Parchment after not being able to find Mother’s Day cards for my Mom friends. From that challenge, I created a line of 6 unique greeting cards that spoke to the kind of relationship I have with my Mom friends and launched Around the Way Parchment in addition to working a full-time job. Before creating stationery, I wrote shared a blog called, “Around the Way Mom” in 2016 as an online resource for Moms. As a Mom, wife, daughter, friend, entrepreneuHER, educator, creative and ministry leader I understand how so many ‘balance’ multiple responsibilities in the course of a day and still manage to make it all work. I’m striving to remind Moms their lives and passions matter, and they can use their creativity to enhance their lives and the lives of their family.

Through stationery, African American themes are integrated into each design to create a sense of familiarity and awareness.

How has the seed money and support from CBI helped you and your business? The seed money from CBI helped me gain a clearer picture of how I can use the funds to jumpstart the business. The impact it will make will be immeasurable as I will be able to inject targeted funds into the business, generate significant revenue and be in a position to leave my full-time job.

2021 Revenue:

Around the Way Parchment is a full-service stationery design firm on a mission to strengthen your interpersonal relationships one piece of paper at a time. AWP serves as the ‘envelope’ encouraging stronger connections and deeper relationships. Inspired by the constraints of stay-at-home orders during the pandemic, creator Krystal Henry understood just how important personal connection was and saw traditional means, such as phone calls and mailing greeting cards, to strengthening relationships. It is because of that reason Henry created typography-forward designs that connected to African American and popular culture.

Accomplishments:

Plans for Growing the Business Greeting cards are the flagship product for AWP and will continued to grow: • Birthday • Love • Thank You • EntrepreneuHERship • Sympathy • Mother’s Day • Father’s Day • Holiday Additional products will be added including journals, notepads, writing tools and small products. Since CCBC’s Center for Business Innovation Business Plan Competition I have: • Launched several collections for sale in our online store and preparing to expand the product line.

Lucy’s Story Over the years, people visit their native homes and return with a small package of things that remind them of home, community, and the nostalgic feeling of sharing a meal with family. One day while traveling back from a visit in Kenya, my spices and beans were confiscated by a customs agent who was wary of the harm these products would have to the consumer. Thus, the dream of accessing to a piece of home was born.

About Bakari Trading, LLC We meet the need of the African Immigrant by providing access to ethnic tea, coffee, and dry goods. The international stores we serve also operate as social centers, cultural consultants, and a source of familiar food for the new immigrants. The advantage we have in the market is our parent company in Kenya that sources products. All our products are inspected by the USA customs, Border Patrol, and FDA to ensure that they meet the highest quality and safety standards.

How has the seed money and support from CBI helped you and your business? The seed money will be used to develop a line of products with Bakari branding and reach 30% of our total sales revenue by 2023. We plan to use the money to market our brand and set up an e-commerce platform.

Michael’s Story

Jasmine’s Story

I spent 34 years as a machinist and safety professional. Now that I’m retired I believe workers should still be protected to make sure they return home to their families at the end of the work day. It is still my passion to continue that mission and that’s why I started this business in safety consulting.

As a hairstylist for over 10 years I’ve seen many women who suffer from medical related hair loss from things like alopecia and cancer treatment who need a hair covering that will not fall off throughout the day. That is how I invented the Halo Headscarf.

About Conver-Safety Consulting We specialize in helping companies manage safety, reduce cost and save lives. The problem of complacency among workers can cause companies to pay thousands of dollars in penalties and fees. We have a 3-Tiered process to reduce unsafe behavior in the workplace. Resulting in a positive work culture that will reduce injuries, fines, and penalties. Our partnership with our clients will be a ongoing engagement to make sure a company will be in compliance with OSHA standards.

How has the seed money and support from CBI helped you and your business? The seed money has helped me with additional marketing and technical training to push the business forward. It’s also given me the ability to subcontract other businesses to work on Branding (logo design/visual branding/website design and development, and social media content).

Bringing people together for celebrations has always brought me joy!

Instead of trying to change their mind, we partner with them and guide them through the process. As “month of” wedding coordinators, we have built in check in calls and checklists that allow couples to plan successfully.

Having the seed money and support has freed me to think about how to grow my business instead of worrying about how to pay for this or that. CBI has been there to support me for any/all of the questions I’ve had along the way. Their support has been invaluable and has motivated me to keep going.

We are the First in Maryland to Grow /Harvest/ and Process locally grown Hemp into Full Spectrum CBD. SEED to SOIL to SHELF all in Baltimore, Maryland.

About Hemp Hills Farm CBD + Wellness

In 2021, by extracting with our Co2 method, we achieved a nearly 100% carbon neutral status in just our second year of production. In 2022 we will be seeking a carbon neutral certification and tax credits. All decarboxylation, supercritical extraction, bottling, packaging and labeling are performed at a zero-lease cost in our 1,200 square ft, split level barn located on the farm. With our unique method of seed to shelf manufacturing, we maintain quality, formulations and artisanship. All products are third party tested and certified. We meet all local and federal industry standards and requirements to assure our customers with top quality reliable products.

We produce the highest quality and purest product because we use the industry’s cleanest most effective Co2 extraction method. Co2 extraction is considered the safest and cleanest process in the industry. However, because the equipment is so expensive and more complicated to run, most competitors use cheaper nasty solvent based solutions to extract their product, which then requires more processing to mitigate and remove the solvents from their end products.

When Covid hit the United States our company was in the very first stages of startup. It was devastating to our company not to be able to visit stores to land sales. Our sales team went from four people down to our core owner/operators. Traditional face to face sales came to a screeching halt. It was nearly impossible to get face time with potential customers until the first quarter of 2021. It was our company’s full production capabilities, quality products, and our retail stores that provided market validation and the much needed business affirmation. When we realized we had proven our product in one of the most unpredictable periods in US history, we became empowered, and realized we had accomplished the hardest part of forming a viable and financially lucrative company. We had proven that a very strong market existed, that our products were unique and effective, and that consumers were waiting and willing to pay a premium for our products. Each store we have entered has continued to keep us as a vendor and sales have continued to increase.

This is another reason we have competitors and retailers asking us to allow them to white label our products. We also have smaller growers asking us to extract and process their raw plant materials, which we declined to do because we have no idea what nutrients or pesticides they used to grow their crops.

In the 4th quarter of 2020 we reached a point where our sales started supporting operation and production costs. As of 11/01/2021 our in store sales quadrupled, proving the effectiveness of our products and a strong consumer and retailer loyalty.

Hemp Hills Farm CBD & Wellness, manufactures and sells a full line of phytocannabinoid products. We are the first licensed hemp growers and Co2 extraction company in the state of Maryland. We are a working farm and an actual seed to shelf company. We select the seeds and strands of flower to grow, we germinate on-site and grow on-site. We are the first carbon neutral hemp company in Maryland and follow strict organic farming practices.

>100%

Plans for Growing the Business We plan to add more confections since it is becoming a very popular way to consume CBD and is one of the most efficient ways due to the sublingual gland in your mouth. We also will go into more types of gummies we hope to add a line of energy gummies sense our relaxation ones are so popular. We also hope to go into all things hemp like belts, hats, straws, etc.

How has the seed money and support from CBI helped you and your business? Since I needed to complete the Small Business Ownership program first, I have not yet received the seed money but it will be very helpful with continuing to grow and improve our marketing.

LaxStraps

Founder Steven Sadler About LaxStraps New Lacrosse Accessory adding design and personalization to lacrosse helmets. LaxStraps are currently used by numerous PLL & MLL athletes, as well as many colleges, high schools and youth teams around the country.

Steven’s Story Trying the old tape and sharpie method of honoring a teammate did not work. That is when I started working on a new way to commemorate and design that space on the lacrosse helmets.

Steven Sadler ContactUs@LaxStraps.com 410.979.4243 Sykesville, MD

Business Facts

The idea of LaxStraps was born in the basement of a college lacrosse house. The players decided they wanted a better way to Make a Statement on the field, and from that came the idea of LaxStraps. In May of 2019, I turned my basement into a workshop to begin producing LaxStraps again.

Manufacturing

How has the seed money and support from CBI helped you and your business? Yes, the advertising dollars spent can now be even better allocated to holiday editions of magazines and newsletters. Opening up my nonexistent advertising budget was a huge help. Being able to increase the awareness of a new product has been super beneficial.

Plans for Growing the Business The new website built for my new products is done. I will be adding Football Straps, Large Custom Wrist Bands, and Backpack Straps to product line. My goal is to have those launched in May 2022.

Joshua’s Story

Cookies have always been a passion of mine and I knew that I wanted to open a cookie business since I was young. When the pandemic started in 2020, my full time job became part time and decided to make my dream a reality.

I was inspired by the idea of entrepreneurship after continuously being laid off. Car dealerships were giving contracts to car detail companies, instead of hiring employees and it inspired me to start my own company.

Truth is, I never wanted to be a florist. We had no flowers or plants at home ever, and the only time I ever saw flowers, were in the funeral home. I was 25 years old before I’d heard of the profession called ‘Florist’. I grew up in the concrete jungle where the only aspirations of success were called a good education that would lead to a prominent career as a medical physician, attorney or some other high profile/high visibility career. No one ever mentioned an industry now worth $30.8 billion. It was November 1997 and I was in a craft store with my mom and grandma. They were doing their thing and I was bored. Christmas was in full swing and the décor was everywhere. As I wandered around, I recall looking up at the all the holiday wreaths on all four walls and declaring, “These have got to be the ugliest things I have ever seen! I can do that! I can do it better than they did and for less!” And I did. That was literally the beginning of my designing career. After graduating from CCBC’s Retail Floristry program in 2003 and gaining my Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Baltimore in 2006, I opened by first flower shop and the recession hit and I lost it all. Determined to put things back together, I repaired my credit and slowly entered back into my field while working 1 full-time job and 3 p/t jobs and being a full-time Mom to three children. I was so focused. I had nowhere to go but up. As I slowly found side-hustle work, I was also tracking the CCBC Business Plan competition because I still wanted more. I finally entered the competition and won! I came in 6th place (out of 6 winners) but no one would ever know it! That win literally changed the trajectory of my life. I went on to develop my business, rebrand it and eventually walked away from my full-time job to work for myself. Taking my leap of faith was the best decision I could have made. I’m proud of me.

How has the seed money and support from CBI helped you and your business? It has helped me to really position my business for financial growth, to obtain more market share with additional resources like a camera system and professional photos. I have been able to focus on my core customers and improve my marketing strategies towards them. Lastly, I’ve gained greater visibility. Whereas before, I had to seek out my ideal client, now they are being referred to me or seeking out Tasha Flowers. Ultimately, the seed money from CBI has led me to be able to pursue my passion for floral design on a full-time basis. Today, with the continued support of CBI and mountains of hard work and sweat equity, I am moving into scaling the business. My short-term goal is to work ON the business and not IN the business. 28

Treehouse Juicery was created out of the need to heal ourselves from health issues that develop from eating unhealthy food options over time. We decided to make a product that not only aided in internal cleansing but something that could be enjoyed anytime of the day. We started juicing and then introduced our juices to family, friends, and eventually paying customers.

The seed money has helped us with startup costs, equipment acquisition (juicers, blenders, and kitchen supplies), bottles, labels, permits, licenses, vending costs, and marketing expenses. Having CBI in our corner has been the spark that initiated our growth. They helped us properly introduce our product to market with the right amount of inventory to scale right out of the gate.
