I have redesigned 3 independent skateboarding books that showcase the transition from the origin and emergence of skateboarding to modern day skateboarding. I chose these books as skateboarding is one of my passions, yet the front cover of a skateboarding book will, without fail, always revolve around an image of someone skateboarding. Through the use of pen, paint and photoshop, I have recreated the book jackets of “Skatebaording is Not a Crime”, “Skatebaording Space and the City” and “Locals Only”.

SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME follows the 50 years of skateboarding steet culture from the 50s in America to 21st century skateboarding. This book jacket was created using a photograph of a white brick wall and pen for the lettering. This was all then edited in photoshop. My inspiration for the font was to make something that gave the notion of crime and evil, as this is what skateboarding is often associated with.

SKATEBOADING SPACE AND THE CITY follows the history of skateboarding, looking at the 1950s surf culture, 70’s skate parks and modern street skating. This book jacket was created using a photogrph of a brick wall, paint, pen and photoshop. I wanted to encapsulate a real city feel and therefore incorporated graffiti and tagging into the design. The alleys of Melbourne were a massive inspiration, as this city also has a large skate scene and culture.

LOCALS ONLY is a book consisting of photos from the surf-driven skateboarding era which is super steezy (stylish and easy). This book jacket was created by using a brick wall as the background and then a permanent marker for the lettering. This was used to create a tagging effect. I did this to try and communicate the hostile and territorial aura, as well as youth and ownership surrounding localism. This design was heavily influenced by Jay Adams and the movie Lords of Dog Town

Although the three books I redesigned are not linked by means of series or author, each one is about skateboarding. To have a consistent set of books I used a brick wall for each of the backgrounds, only altering the colour. I then used tag-style fonts on these bricks to imitate grafitti. Each book has a graffiti spray cloud on the back cover in which the blurb is written and all three have the same publisher logo on the spine: Cheese Visuals. These aspects affectivley linked the three books.
