Dave Carson
Born in Corpus Christi Texas in 1955, Dave Carson first made contact with Graphic Design in 1980 during a two weel graphics course. From there he began to experiment with type, finding himself immersed in the artistic culture of Southern California. Carson became the art director of Transworld Skate magazine in 1984, which saw the development of his now signature ‘dirty’ style. In 1992, Carson began to work for new-kid-on-the-block alternative music and lifestyle magazine Ray Gun. Through his time with Ray gun, his audience grew significantly and he began to feature in large publications such as in the New York Times and Newsweek. In 1955 Carson left Ray Gun to start his own studio.
I defined Grunge Typography One of the most prominent designers of the 1990s, David Carson was best known for his magazine design and typography, which were both innovative and experimental. He was best known for his work with Ray Gun magazine, especially the use of headlines mixed in with images. He was a keen surfer, which heavily influenced his punk-esque and grungy design. Typical to 1990s graphic design, the work of Carson broke all the rules of modernism and the Swiss grid. His display based type was sophisticated and experimental which in turn created exciting and transformational designs.
