Back to the Future: The Long View

Dear Brebeuf Jesuit Friends, “Go to the Limits of Your Longing” by Rainer Maria Rilke; translation by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows

A solid future is built in the present upon a strong foundation from the past. This issue of Bylines has a cover story about our future, but it also includes a profile of Fr. Paul Peterson (as he celebrates his 51st year of Jesuit priesthood) and a focus on the early years of Brebeuf. How appropriate that we go back to the past as we focus on the future to alert the Bylines reader to the present at Brebeuf Jesuit. Next fall we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of opening our doors to students to be formed in the Jesuit tradition — 50 years of shaping teenagers to become Men and Women for Others. The world is different because of the 7000+ plus alumni who have walked out the door with a Brebeuf Jesuit diploma. It is this past which fuels the vision of our school as we hit mid-century. Our vision is found in the Strategic Plan (approved by the Board of Trustees in October 2010) which is entitled “Magis: A Framework for Greatness.” To thrive in our second half century, we call ourselves to focus upon four issues: Pursuing Academic Excellence, Reaffirming Our Ignatian Identity, Becoming a More Diverse and Inclusive Community, and Enhancing Financial Sustainability.

God speaks to each of us as he makes us, then walks with us silently out of the night. These are the words we dimly hear: You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing. Embody me. Flare up like a flame and make big shadows I can move in. Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final. Don't let yourself lose me. Nearby is the country they call life. You will know it by its seriousness. Give me your hand.

Book of Hours, I 59

As we go into the future, we do so on the foundation built by men like Fr. Paul. He and other Jesuits shaped the first students here. Their work has been taken up today by many lay collaborators (some of whom are Brebeuf Jesuit alumni), and today we call students “to discover and cultivate the fullness of their God-given talents as a responsibility and as an act of worship” (Brebeuf Jesuit Mission Statement). As I reflect on this call to current students, I think of the poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, “Go to the Limits of Your Longing,” in which he writes:

God speaks to each of us as he makes us, then walks with us silently out of the night. These are the words we dimly hear: You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing. Embody me.

Our alumni roster is filled with evidence of men and women for others: people who have gone to the limits of their longing partially because of the influence of Brebeuf Jesuit. It is on the foundation of past faculty and alumni that we build the future shaping present students. In partnership with current parents — and the prayers and support of all — the world is assured of a long “Brave” future.

Sincerely,

Matthew J. Hayes president, brebeuf Jesuit

based decisions to ensure that all students are successful,” says IDOE School Counselor Consultant Amanda Culhan. “We recognize Brebeuf Jesuit for understanding the tremendous impact that school counselors can have in helping students succeed in school and also to plan for postsecondary success.”

The evaluation for the Top Workplaces program was based upon feedback from an employee survey that many faculty and staff completed a last winter. Onehundred and five companies participated in the program and 65 companies were selected for the Top Workplaces award.

Brebeuf Jesuit joins more than 156 Indiana elementary, middle and high schools that have received the Gold Star Award since its inception in 1997. Six years later, IDOE, in collaboration with the Indiana Student Achievement Institute, began offering professional development opportunities for schools interested in aligning their counseling program with the Gold Star model. Schools that participate in the program choose a four-part workshop series or an online video workshop course to help them make the transformation to the Indiana Gold Star School Counseling model.

Indiana Honors Brebeuf Jesuit’s Counseling Program

Educational technology at Brebeuf Jesuit

The Indiana Department of Education has named Brebeuf Jesuit to receive the Indiana Gold Star School Counseling Award in 2011. Gold Star schools undergo a rigorous process to raise student achievement by creating local community advisory groups that review student data, set specific student goals, and commit to maximizing the time and skills of the school counselor. The official award presentation was at the Indiana School Counselor Association (ISCA) fall conference in Indianapolis on Nov. 11, 2011.

Recent headlines relating to educational technology reflect the interest in online education. Many benefits are anecdotally reported, predominately focused on preparing young adults for life in a technology saturated future. Yes, technology is and will continue to be a driving force in education, commerce... and let’s face it, adult life. How are we preparing our students for this world?

Brebeuf Jesuit named one of the Top Workplaces in 2011 Last April, the Indianapolis Star published “Top Workplaces 2011” – a list of the best places to work in the Central Indiana region, and Brebeuf Jesuit was named to the list.

careers that are online and to expand choices and opportunities. Students at Brebeuf have been exposed to online learning environments as early as eight years ago with the introduction of the Edline online environment. In that time, classroom course offerings have expanded from simple grade posting to interactive assignments, homework dropboxes, blogging and other Edline features to more advanced features like interactive video chats with students in Kenya and graduates in Central America. This year, students are gaining robust experience with "Cloud computing” through the school’s AMDG partnership with Google. Later this fall, personal responsibility and choice in technology will become manifest as students take advantage of the school’s new Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) policy. Many of the skills students are developing here will translate to their online courses in college and their lives beyond.

More than 1.5 million juniors from over 21,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Program by taking the 2010 PSAT. 16,000 semifinalists were selected based on those PSAT scores. Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. The finalists will be announced in the Spring of 2012, and will then have an opportunity to compete for approximately 8,200 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $36 million. The goal of the National Merit Scholarship program is to honor the nation’s scholastic champions and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.

Naeem Turner-Bandele ’13 participates in the Civic Education Project Last spring break, instead of taking a respite from the winter cold, Naeem Turner-Bandele spent his break in the company of a diverse group of intellectual, motivated high school students who all have a passionate interest in service and a desire to develop their leadership and citizenship skills. The 10 students with whom the Brebeuf sophomore honor student joined forces with were participants of Civic Week. Civic Week is part of the award-winning leadership and citizenship pro-

gram based at Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development. The Civic Education Project, CEP, combines traditional education and community service to promote civic responsibility among young people. Naeem and his peers spent their week (March 27-April 2) in San Francisco exploring issues of public health through visits to cutting-edge medical facilities and neighborhoods underserved by health care resources. Naeem and his contemporaries became

acutely aware that our nation faces a growing struggle to attend to our individual and collective health care needs. Naeem and his group learned the specifics about the rising health care costs which burden our economy and the host of chronic and infectious diseases which threaten our quality of life. The participants were made aware of the challenges facing families and communities while working with the professionals who are tackling health education, disease prevention and issues

of equity. The CEP students with whom Naeem accompanied examined contemporary policy debates and learned about ways to address public health issues in our neighborhoods and nation. Naeem returned to Indianapolis resolved and committed to be more than just another high-achieving student and school leader. Naeem says his life goal is much larger. He is determined to “change the world” and he believes the change starts with him – by becoming an active, informed and engaged citizen. Naeem’s first objective is to establish a foundation that will work to eradicate societal ills such as illiteracy, poverty, health care disparities and hunger.

Glennis Henderson ’11 named a Prelude Award Winner Glennis Henderson ’11 received a first place Prelude Award in the video/film category for her “Circulating Journal Project.” The project started by circulating two blank books around Brebeuf, with instructions to fellow students to use a page in the book as a way to express themselves. The instructions stated, “This is your time to express anything you feel is important.” The response from the student body was so overwhelming that two more books were added to the circulation. Even so, that did not satisfy the demand, and students simply submitted pages to be glued into the existing books. There is now an incredible archive of four books, filled with the creativity of many Brebeuf students. Glennis is attending Burlington College in Vermont this fall and plans to study film and photography and international relations, specifically Eastern Africa/ U.S. relations.

Brebeuf Jesuit represented at the Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival For the seventh year, the Mass Ave Cultural District of Indianapolis’ downtown was taken over by the Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival. IndyFringe, as it is more commonly known, featured a variety of performances on seven stages throughout the area from Aug. 19-28, 2011. Lyndsey Brown ’12 presented her third original musical at this year’s Fringe. “Antigone With A Shotgun: The Musical (and other stories),” which English teacher and Director of Theatre Kevin Burgun co-wrote, was performed on the Phoenix Theatre’s main stage throughout the festival’s 10 day run. The show, which featured Lyndsey Brown ’12, Chloe Follis ’13 and Bethany Driggers ’14, is comprised of four approximately 10-minute musicals, each asking the question, “If you gave a literary heroine a shotgun, would it change her story?” Mr. Burgun also directed “How to Kill” at this year’s festival, and Adrienne Fink ’06 was the assistant director and stage manager. “How to Kill,” which was developed as part of the Bloomington Playwrights Project’s BloomingPlays series last year, is a comedy about a man who uses killing people in his mind as a way to cope with his crippling anxiety. “How to Kill” was performed on the Phoenix Theatre’s main stage six times throughout IndyFringe 2011.

Brebeuf students attended state Latin convention Brebeuf Jesuit students were among more than 300 high school and college Latin students who attended the 58th annual Indiana Junior Classical League Convention at Indiana University in

Jason Hoard ’11 chosen as an Academic All-Stars Regional Winner Jason Hoard ’11 was chosen as an Academic All-Stars Regional Winner by the Indianapolis Star last spring. Indiana schools are directed to select nominees based on the following considerations: • A mathematical formula that

combines the SAT/ACT composite score and the grade-point average for seven semesters. • Extracurricular activities related to

academics. • Nonacademic extracurricular

activities. • Leadership. • Community service and involvement.

A committee of educators and civic leaders met in March to select the Academic All-Stars Regional Winners and Academic All-Stars. This year, the committee selected 86 Regional Winners from 170 nominees who went on to compete for Academic All-Stars status.

staff and parents traveled through Russia, performing five concerts in St. Petersburg, Novgorod and Moscow. Every two years, Director of Bands & Orchestra Steve Hoernemann takes students on a tour to play their music and see different parts of the world. Religion teacher Shannon Buelt, who chaperoned the trip, said, “It’s important for the kids to experience a different culture and develop a greater appreciation for what we have here.” Buelt, who teaches World Religions to freshmen, compared interacting with different people to learning about other religions: “The more we learn about other people, maybe the less inclined we’d be to automatically judge.” On this past summer’s trip, students performed with the St. Petersburg Wind Symphony in the State Cappella Concert Hall and with soloists at the School of Culture in the Southern District of Moscow. Buelt said the acoustics in the two venues were “amazing” and the performances were filled with moments that gave her chills and filled her with appreciation for how talented the Brebeuf Jesuit students are.

“It took my breath away,” said Buelt. Ben McKibben ’13 said the best part of the tour was having the opportunity to play music with his classmates in a foreign country. He said the experience strengthened the values of collaboration and cooperation for him because “when you go into a venue you’ve never been to before to perform, you need a lot of teamwork to put on the concert.” Buelt said she enjoyed watching the students bond over the two weeks and look out for each other while abroad. Calvin Kautsky ’12 agreed: “Spending two weeks with that small group of people makes you really tight at the end.” When not performing, the group visited a number of famous sites and monuments including Red Square, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the State Hermitage Museum, and the Peter and Paul Fortress. Along with introducing students to a new part of the world, this trip engaged students with the Jesuit ideal of reflection. Each night, Hoernemann would recount the events of the day and give

students something to think about. Additionally, Brebeuf Jesuit students demonstrated lessons learned back home while they interacted with the local people. Buelt said she was impressed as she watched the students “visit with, be served by, and learn from Russian people with grace and respect, which reflects who we are at Brebeuf – Men and Women for Others.”

THE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

Kate Motsinger and Michael Tellman

The Community Service Award is presented to the student(s) who has/have contributed substantially to the progress and activities of civic and social groups for the individual good of the community principally outside the school. Kate and Michael have volunteered countless hours beyond the required course time for completion of Community Service. Though not uncommon for Brebeuf Jesuit students, what distinguishes these recipients is their personal journey in which Community Service has gone from duty and grade to, now, the call they answer in their daily lives.

the 33rd annual president’s dinner Honoring Dr. Janet C. Clark and Mr. J. Murray Clark ’75 October 25, 2011 Brebeuf Jesuit parents, students, alumni and current and past faculty gathered at the Indiana Roof Ballroom to honor Janet and Murray Clark as they received the Brebeuf Jesuit President’s Medal from President Matthew Hayes. Special guests included Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. Janet and Murray have distinguished themselves as active supporters of Brebeuf Jesuit in many capacities. Murray has completed terms on the Board of Trustees and the Brebeuf Alumni Association Board of Directors, and has also served on two Presidential Search Committees. In 2001, Murray was awarded the Fred B. McCashland Outstanding Alumnus Award for service to his alma mater. Janet’s long relationship to the school includes a term on the Board of Trustees, acting as Chair from 2006-2009, and participation on the committees for the last two Strategic Plans for Brebeuf. As the parents of Jimmy ’06, Holly ’08, Kate ’12 and Annie ’15, the Clarks have demonstrated a deep commitment to Jesuit education. Beyond gifts of time and talent, Janet and Murray have financially supported innumerable causes at Brebeuf, including scholarships, campus facilities, athletic programs and the Magis Society of the Annual Fund.

Janet has been a pediatric dentist since 1987, opening her own practice on Rockville Road in 1997. During his 11 years in the Indiana State Senate, Murray advocated for a variety of social and fiscal reforms. He is a partner at Baker & Daniels LLP, and served as chairman of the Indiana Republican Party from 2006 to 2010. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC), the Board of Trustees for the Indianapolis Foundation and the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF).

In their public lives, Janet and Murray have chosen careers that allow them to benefit others and work for positive change in the community.

DRS. CONNIE AND MARK GAPINSKI Drs. Connie and Mark Gapinski are the parents of Zach ’12 and Aliya ’14. Connie and Mark are Magis Society donors and serve as co-chairs of the Magis Society Executive Committee for the 2011-12 year. The Magis Society is Brebeuf Jesuit’s leadership giving society for those generous donors who contribute $1,500 or more per fiscal year to the Annual Fund.

Dear Brebeuf family, The concept of Magis, the philosophy of doing more, is fundamental at Brebeuf Jesuit. Whether it be struggling for an extra yard on the gridiron, rehearsing the scene one more time or the extra credit project to achieve the higher grade, we have seen the concept of Magis grow in our children during their years at Brebeuf. Moreover, we have seen how the Magis continues to be practiced by Brebeuf alumni as they give that extra measure to their jobs, communities and families. We are pleased to serve this year as co-chairs of the Magis Society Executive Committee. In this role, we hope to encourage current Brebeuf families and alumni to join us in “doing that something extra” to support the Brebeuf Jesuit Annual Fund. With all our support, we can ensure that Brebeuf will continue to produce well educated, servant leaders for the greater glory of God. Sincerely,

BREBEUF JESUIT BYLINES / WINTER 2012

When Frank Loughery was looking for a high school to attend in 1966, he knew he wanted a quality education in a Catholic setting that would prepare him for college. Although Brebeuf Jesuit had only opened four years earlier, Loughery says “its reputation met those objectives.” While at Brebeuf, Loughery attended nearly every home basketball game where he remembers the student body’s “great spirit” and recalls feeling “momentum swing back and forth as the two schools battled on the floor.” During his senior year, Loughery joined the swim team and enjoyed spending time in the senior lounge. “We had a great senior year,” Loughery says, “I felt that we got along well.”

After completing his Brebeuf education, Loughery received his Bachelor of Business degree in accounting from the University of Notre Dame. From there, Loughery moved to Chicago to work for Arthur Andersen, where he eventually worked up to the audit manager level, and earned his CPA. Loughery worked for Arthur Andersen for nine years before moving to Abbott Laboratories in Chicago. After 26 years, Loughery retired as the Divisional Vice President and Assistant Corporate Controller in 2009. Since then Loughery has moved to Zionsville where he works part-time from home for Brown Schultz Sheridan & Fritz as a quality control reviewer for audit reports.

Loughery has given to Brebeuf Jesuit nearly every year since his graduation and has been a member of the Magis Society, which recognizes major donors to the Annual Fund, since 1999. “I think having strong Catholic high schools in the Indianapolis area is essential,” said Loughery, who limits his time and monetary contributions primarily to Catholic organizations that support and serve disadvantaged children and families, the elderly, victims of domestic violence, and Catholic education. Loughery specifically gives to Brebeuf Jesuit because he thinks it’s important for students to have the opportunity to receive an excellent Catholic education. “We need future leaders who have strong moral convictions to do what is right,” Loughery said. “I would ask other alumni to consider where our children will learn how to be strong moral leaders of our future organizations. I have more trust that Brebeuf will give us these leaders than other high schools in the Indianapolis area.”

According to Loughery, his time at Brebeuf Jesuit helped mold him in two major ways. “I think the biggest contribution to me as an individual,” Loughery said, “was to give me confidence to be myself, accepting both my strengths and weaknesses.” Loughery’s Brebeuf education also helped reinforce his Catholic roots, teaching him not only to know right from wrong, but to select right over wrong, which Loughery said helped him throughout his career in business. As an alum, Loughery has stayed connected to Brebeuf Jesuit through class reunions, the Alumni Awards Banquet and Magis receptions. “These events have helped me reconnect with old friends as well as begin new friendships,” he said.

THE MAGIS

(Editor’s note: Following is the second in a series featuring the winners of the Indianapolis Serra Club’s 2011 John D. Kelley Vocations Essay Contest. Annie’s essay is reprinted with permission from The Criterion, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.)

By exposing students like me to religious vocations, it invites Catholic youths to open their minds and hearts to Christ’s love and consider such a call.

Father Meyer’s travels. His goal was to open their eyes to the priestly life, hoping that they too would begin contemplating the priesthood.

The time that I spent at the convent revealed a world of pure prayer and worship. To see how these women demonstrated amazingly faithful and Christ-like lives was a moving experience for me.

ANNUAL VOCATION FIELD TRIPS AT ST. LUKE HELP YOUTHS BE OPEN TO GOD’S CALL by Annie Melbert ’15 Special to The Criterion

It was evident that the sisters were proud to be Catholic, and happy in their lives serving God. All of the sisters were inspirational examples for me; they sacrificed everything to follow Jesus Christ, just like he calls all of us to do.

Father Meyer often shared his interesting journey to the priesthood. He was a sophomore in college and had a girlfriend. He admitted that he had not been practicing his Catholic faith as he should.

God created each of us in his own likeness. In addition, He blessed each of us with special gifts and talents, and created a life plan for us.

Priests, like their sister counterparts, choose a selfless life of service and of profound love and devotion to God. Priests have an important job

Throughout our lives, we search and learn how God wants us to use these talents to best serve him. Some people are created to live a single life, while others are called to the married life and raising a family.

within the Catholic Church, and it is by their example and spiritual guidance that help each of us live faithful lives. Through the simplest of gestures, priests let us know how much they love us. Visiting classrooms, dressing up as saints for the younger children of the school and celebrating sacraments like reconciliation are just a few of the Christ-like things priests at my school have done in the past to demonstrate their love and

Becoming a priest was not even on the radar, but he heard the voice of God repeatedly calling, “John, become a priest. John, become a priest.” Sensing that God was tugging at his heart, Father Meyer knew that “The Voice” would not be quiet until he fulfilled the plan and became a priest. So he did. Father Meyer broke up with his girlfriend, started to pray, and became one of the most dedicated priests I have ever known— exemplifying Christ’s love in his everyday life and leaving a positive mark on St. Luke. Choosing our path in life can be a difficult task. However, putting all of our faith and trust in God for guidance helps ease the stress. With all of the distractions in the world, it is difficult to hear God’s whisper. But, as St. John Vianney said, “It is in solitude that God speaks to us.”

commitment to the Church. Certain, very special people choose a different path and enter a life wholly consecrated to God. These people are the ones called by God to be priests, deacons, brothers and sisters. It may be difficult for lay people to understand why people enter a religious vocation, sacrificing a lifelong mate and children of their own. However, priests, religious brothers, sisters and deacons have been given a special gift from God. By opening their hearts and minds to Christ’s love, they have answered God’s call to serve him, the Church and their fellow man. Each year, the girls and boys in the seventh grade in my school participate in a vocations field trip—a special, long-standing tradition offered by St. Luke School. The boys travel to St. Meinrad for a daylong visit to the monastery, while the girls take a day trip to South Bend to visit the University of Notre Dame and the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration.

Through God’s grace, priests have the power to turn bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. We, in turn, witness the transubstantiation of his divine body and blood through the powerful sacrament of holy Eucharist. One priest who had a profound effect on me was Father Jonathan Meyer. Through his compelling homilies and faith-filled life, Father Meyer proclaimed God’s word and led us closer to Christcentered lives of love. During his frequent visits at the school, Father Meyer served as a spiritual role model for students because of his fiery passion for God. Monthly, Father Meyer would walk the school hallways, popping into the classrooms to inform students about a saint he had become interested in, tell us a story, or just say “Hi.” He also established a fellowship program on the first Thursday of every month for the boys of the parish. The meetings provided a casual night of fun activities, prayer and stories about

If we listen carefully and open our hearts, we might just hear God calling us to the religious life. We then can answer, “Here I am, Lord.” (Annie and her parents, Barry and Karen Melbert, are members of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish in Indianapolis. She completed the eighth grade at St. Luke School in Indianapolis last spring, and is the eighth-grade division winner in the Indianapolis Serra Club’s 2011 John D. Kelley Vocations Essay Contest.)

FR. PAUL PETERSON, SJ, CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AS A JESUIT AND REFLECTS BACK ON HIS TIME AT BREBEUF JESUIT by Ellie Crawford ’07 Next year Brebeuf Jesuit will celebrate its 50th anniversary and there’s no doubt that it has changed over the past half-century. At one time the halls were filled with boys in suit jackets and

ties, the passing periods were silent, and most classes were taught by Jesuits. Today, Brebeuf prides itself on its diverse student and employee population and students are afforded much more freedom with a unique schedule that teaches them to balance free time, academics and extracurriculars. Fr. Paul Peterson, SJ, first came to Brebeuf Jesuit in 1966, just a few months after the first class graduated. From that time until 1971, Fr. Paul taught math and a few English and religion classes. During his second stint at Brebeuf Jesuit, from 1999 to 2002, Fr. Paul taught algebra and economics. He has been back at Brebeuf, serving as alumni chaplain, since 2005. Fr. Paul, who celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination this year, reflected on the school today and how it has changed over the years. Besides the obvious differences between the boys who first occupied Brebeuf and today’s student body, Fr. Paul noted that the current student population seems more spiritual. Although the faculty and staff have become more secular and the number of masses offered has decreased, Fr. Paul said the students of Brebeuf Jesuit today tend to be more open to spiritual experiences and prayer, as seen through morning prayer and the Daily Examen. Fr. Paul said there is a spiritual tone throughout the school that wasn’t present before, and he attributes that to encouragement from the administration, faculty and staff. Along with that spiritual aspect, Fr. Paul said the school today has a stronger sense of its philosophy through the new Mission Statement and Core Values. Additionally, Fr. Paul recognized that the Graduate at Graduation provides the Brebeuf community with a guide to the things that are truly important in life. As the society in which Brebeuf Jesuit operates has changed, Fr. Paul noted a few challenges that students and the school face today. Because of the comparatively relaxed atmosphere of the school, Fr. Paul said that students

Page 23

now have more freedom to make decisions about what they do, and feels moral and ethical influences are now coming from the media rather than the school itself. Another concern for Fr. Paul is what he referred to as the culture of wealth that seems to be more prevalent in the school today than it used to be. Although he acknowledged the importance of the wealthy families and organizations that help the school operate, Fr. Paul worries that not all families have the means to participate in the more costly aspects of the Brebeuf Jesuit experience. In the next five years, as the school continues to evolve, Fr. Paul hopes to see Brebeuf accept and support any student, regardless of economic social status.

HISTORY OF JESUIT EDUCATION The Society of Jesus is known world-wide for its excellent schools. When Jesuits move into a new geographical area, the first thing people usually want from the Jesuits is a new school. Whether it is Cristo Rey High School in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Peter Claver High School in Dodoma, Tanzania, or St. Aloysius in Nairobi, Kenya – to name three recent examples of new schools started by the Chicago-Detroit Province – education is one of the main ministries of the Jesuits. This was not, however, the original intention of St. Ignatius and the first companions when they founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. They saw themselves as itinerant preachers, spiritual counselors and confessors. However, as learned theologians trained at the University of Paris, they soon came to realize that education was one of the best gifts that they could give to the Church. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are at the core of Jesuit spirituality. The Exercises are about prayerful reflection and decision-making. Those who make the Spiritual Exercises become more aware of how God is acting in their lives, and are better able to choose what to do in response. The Spiritual Exercises are a pedagogy of the heart, a pedagogy of spiritual formation and of action.

When the Jesuits opened their first school in Messina, Italy, in 1548, they created an educational system that was based on their experience of the Exercises. St. Ignatius saw these schools as an opportunity to form the minds and souls of students. In bringing students to a deeper understanding of God’s action in their own lives, Ignatius sought to form them in a way that they would go out and form and influence many others – the original “men and women for others!” The Jesuits created an educational system based in the humanities that was international – a network of schools that transcended boundaries of language, culture and nationhood, one that was intercultural and global in perspective – providing the first internationally recognized educational system. Put simply, if you wanted your child to get a good education, you sent them to a Jesuit school! The Latin word humanitas means both the process and the studies that develop moral goodness, devotion to truth and a disposition to act for the civic good – encompassing the study of languages, poetry, history, rhetoric and logic, along with mathematics, the sciences and philosophy. Ignatius believed that studying the humanities opened the mind, sharpened the wits and deepened human sympathy. At Paris he had learned that subjects should be studied in an orderly way, languages and humanities preceding the sciences and philosophy. Theology was seen as the culmination of the intellectual enterprise – integrating all parts of the intellectual life. This idea flowed out of the central theme of his spirituality, that the whole world discloses God at work. By the time Ignatius died in 1556, there were 35 Jesuit colleges (we would call them secondary schools today) across Europe, and 200 years later more than 800 in both the Old and New Worlds. Ignatius had stipulated that these schools should be "for everybody, poor and rich." Endowments from civic leaders and benefactors enabled these schools to offer a free education. Graduates of these schools played a central role in the evolution of 17th and 18th-century thought in Europe and in the New World. Jesuit

astronomers, dramatists, theologians, linguists, painters, architects, mathematicians and scholars of every stamp were immersed in the intellectual movements of the day. In the United States, wherever Catholics settled in any number, Jesuits founded schools. These institutions mirrored the original movement of the population westward as well as the later waves of European immigration to the urban centers of the East and Midwest. Georgetown, founded in 1789, became the first Jesuit institution in the United States. Today, there are 28 Jesuit colleges/universities and 54 Jesuit high schools in this country. Today, the goal of a Jesuit education is still fundamentally the same as in the time of St. Ignatius – that students should study the best of human culture, relate this to their experience of God, use their knowledge for the common good, and imagine themselves as citizens of a global culture concerned about the well being of all people – something the Jesuits have been doing for almost 500 years! Taken from: "Jesuits at Boston College: Six Propositions For A Conversation" (1994)

IGNATIAN IDENTITY PILGRIMAGE SUMMER 2011 by Ellie Crawford ’07 Last year a new Vision Statement was developed to guide the future of the Brebeuf Jesuit. It reads: Our vision for the School’s future is that Brebeuf Jesuit, rooted in the Jesuit tradition, will be the best college preparatory school in central Indiana by providing an outstanding academic program and ensuring the education of the whole person. The statement makes an important point that sets Brebeuf Jesuit apart from other schools in central Indiana. The distinction is that Brebeuf Jesuit is “rooted in Jesuit tradition.” That tradition, which dates back to 1534 when the Society of Jesus was formed, is what guides members of the Brebeuf Jesuit community to be men and women for others who are intellectually compe-

tent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to social justice. In order to keep that tradition alive, Brebeuf Jesuit sent faculty and staff members Carmen Ramos, Caron King, Layton Elliott and Fr. Michael Christiana, SJ, on an Ignatian Identity Pilgrimage through Spain and Italy for two weeks this past summer to learn what it means to be a Jesuit educator. As they traveled through a number of cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Loyola, Avila, Salamanca, Rome and Assisi, with 46 other Jesuit educators from the Midwest, they followed Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s footsteps and discovered who Saint Ignatius was by experiencing where he lived, studied and died. For Carmen Ramos, Academic Counselor, the most meaningful part was “getting to have a handson experience with Saint Ignatius’ life.” Religion teacher Carson King said he got a “much deeper appreciation for Ignatius’ passion for engaging the world” and was inspired by Ignatius’ ability to reach out to people and bring the gospel to them, in their own context. The journey taught King to better understand the experiences individual students bring to the classroom. In Spain and Italy, the group visited a number of sites and churches where Saint Ignatius studied and worked. King explained that many of the Jesuit priests in the group, including Brebeuf Jesuit’s Fr. Michael Christiana, SJ, Vice President for Mission and Jesuit Identity, said Mass while visiting the significant spots. As is custom in the Jesuit tradition, the group was

asked to participate in reflections on Ignatian spirituality throughout the trip. King said they also had time to explore the cities in which they stayed, taking in the famous sites and “enjoying Spanish and Italian cultures” with “a lot of good food and good wine.” According to King, the purpose of the Ignatian Identity trip was to give the Jesuit educators a unique understanding of Saint Ignatius and his teachings so they could bring those ideals back home and infuse them into their own schools. Ramos described the trip as “an important experience for anyone who works in a Jesuit school” because it helped her further realize the importance of a Jesuit education. “Saint Ignatius set the world on fire,” Ramos said. “It’s important that [Brebeuf Jesuit students] know what Ignatius’ teachings were.” Ramos said the trip allowed her to bring that awareness back to the faculty, staff and students of Brebeuf Jesuit. For King, following Saint Ignatius’ footsteps helped him identify with the Jesuit tradition in a new way. It “really emphasized to me the connection through space and time that Jesuits and Jesuit teachers have to each other, spanning five centuries of tradition.” Experiencing that tradition in a tangible way gave King “a sense of being part of a much greater vision and mission than just what [we’re] doing locally.” That connection to Saint Ignatius and the Jesuit tradition is what guides the Brebeuf Jesuit community and sets it apart from other schools.

St. Vincent Health Field opens new era in Brebeuf Jesuit athletics On Friday, Aug. 26, the Brebeuf Jesuit football team played its inaugural game on a new multi-purpose athletic field turf, which was constructed over the summer. The project replaced the natural grass field with state-of-the-art athletic field turf for football, lacrosse and soccer student-athletes. In addition, plans include a replacement scoreboard and a material upgrade for the six-lane track surrounding the multi-purpose field, to be completed during summer 2012 months. The track will be named for longtime Brebeuf track coach Marty Hill ’70. The $890,000 construction project received its lead gift from St. Vincent Health. The faith-based health system also contributed to Brebeuf ’s Mark G. Kite Wellness Center, which opened in April 2009. The combined construction project of the field and track was championed by volunteer efforts of Brad Chambers, president and CEO of Buckingham Companies and Brebeuf parent, who assisted in raising funds to complete the project and donated services to cover pre-construction needs and costs. Boys golf team successfully defends State title A state championship is the highest achievement a member school can obtain in the Indiana High School Athletic Association. In any sport it is also the most difficult and challenging achievement. Coach Ryan Brammer’s Braves took top honors again in the IHSAA State Championship with a magnificent, come from behind charge, beating the field and runner-up Columbus North in a finish that came down to a tie breaker to determine the outcome. The Brebeuf Jesuit boys golf program is very special and unique. Of course it begins with the players. Shot after shot, Jacob Gould ’11, Gus Gilmore ’11, Wil Pahud ’12, Will Tenbarge ’12 and Max Gagnier ’12 beat the field. Rounding out the varsity roster were Kyle Osting ’13, Jon Osting ’11, Phil French ’11, Dawson Robinson ’12, Justin Klausner ’11, Bill McClamroch ’12 Luc Hamilton ’11 and Max French ’12, who created a competitive cauldron where the strongest survived. Cross country was my absolute favorite time. The team camaraderie, leadership development and personal sense of fulfillment were crucial in my development and growth. What made you return to Brebeuf as a faculty member? I continued to work with the cross country teams after graduating, developing the summer training program. Soon after, I’d find myself mentoring students in retreat talks as well as covering maternity leaves. It was clear that my calling was in education, and it took a great deal of discernment to accept this and make it happen. It helped having several positive influences in those early days, from Karl Knerr ’74 and Marty Hill ’70 allowing me to grow as a coach, to Iris Manton and Sherry Annee as my first department chairs. What is your favorite thing about working at Brebeuf Jesuit? Brebeuf is a marvelous community with many avenues to educate the students, from classroom teaching to extracurricular involvement. The mentoring and formation of young people in a community of support to become leaders and instruments of change is the reward. What do you hope for the future of the school? I hope Brebeuf rises in strength as an institution reputed for more than academic excellence. I would like to see colleges, workforce, community and individuals know that what they are getting when they get a Brebeuf student is a selfless individual who responds to God’s calling.

After staying home with my children for five years, I decided to go back to work. I just knew that the one place I could be happy teaching was Brebeuf. You hear people talk about their high school years being terrible, but I really loved my years as a Brebeuf student. Coming back to this environment seemed like the perfect scenario. I knew that I would be able to work with fantastic teachers and motivated students. What is your favorite thing about working at Brebeuf Jesuit? The students are without a doubt the best thing about working at Brebeuf. Every single day I get to laugh with and learn from great kids. How has Brebeuf changed since you were a student? In many ways, Brebeuf is exactly the same. The spirit of Brebeuf is hard to describe, but it is still the same. The biggest changes are the development of new programs. The arts have developed by leaps and bounds since the ’80s. Today, our orchestra is fantastic, and it did not even exist when I was a student. The growth of athletic facilities is significant too. When I was a student, our meager athletic facilities were almost a badge of honor that we wore with pride. Today, we have beautiful new facilities for our student-athletes. Where do you see Brebeuf going in the next 10 years? I hope that the spirit of Brebeuf never changes. It is truly a special place where students and adults have great respect for each other, students are kind to one another, and the highest of academic standards are met. I hope that we continue to do all of those things.

Favorite vacation spot: The west coast of Ireland What is your favorite memory from when you were a student at Brebeuf?

Detailed information regarding each of these events will be sent later this Spring.

Going on retreat with Fr. Streeter and a select group of seniors is one of my favorite memories. What made you return to Brebeuf as a faculty member? The sense of community that is fostered here with the students is one of the main reasons that I came back to Brebeuf. I love being in an atmosphere that supports and sponsors intellectual competence. It seems at times that being inquisitive and informed is almost counter cultural with today’s adolescents and Brebeuf does its best to encourage the students to think for themselves and to want to know what is going on in the world. How has Brebeuf changed since you were a student? When I came to Brebeuf (I was a senior the first year they went co-ed) there were only about 25 females in my class. Now the classes are approximately evenly split between males and females. Where do you see Brebeuf going in the next 10 years? I hope that we continue to be on the cutting edge of facilitating the growth of “men and women for others.” I would love to see the completion of the Performing Arts Center and the adoption of American Sign Language as a world language. What do you hope for the future of the school? I hope and pray that we will always continue to be a Jesuit institution and that we continue facilitating the growth of men and women for others.

ALUMNI NEWS

Hello Fellow Alums! I am a graduate of the Class of 1981 and I look forward to maximizing the efforts of the Alumni Board to participate in the future of our alma mater. During my years at Brebeuf, I was involved in the girls basketball program and have enjoyed watching it grow and prosper over the years. The fact that the Alumni Board is the main body involved in constructing the permanent Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame (located outside the West Gym) is a great honor.

Mr. Kevin M. Quinn ’96 president-elect

One of the goals of the Alumni Board is to grow the Alumni Association and to involve all those interested in maintaining a relationship with the school that gave us so much. There are many current students in need of alumni’s various expertise, and we can share our knowledge and our life experiences to help guide young men and women in their quest to become outstanding citizens in our communities.

Remarks of Fr. Terry Charlton, SJ ’66 Recipient of the Fred B. McCashland Outstanding Alumnus Award

Darryl and Linda Co oper,

sister and brother-in-l aw, and Fr. Terry Ch arlton, SJ, ’66

I am deeply honored to receive the Fred B. McCashland Outstanding Alumnus Award. I have been profoundly blessed in being able to be a founder of a unique school, St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School, serving AIDS-orphans in Kibera Slum in Nairobi, Kenya. To illustrate our mission, let me speak of one of our graduates, David Dinda. After losing both his parents to the AIDS pandemic just at the time he was completing grade school, David barely survived by selling water to people in Kibera for three years until he joined high school with us at St. Aloysius. Upon completion of high school, we invited David into our six-months’ program of community service, which he took up at a Jesuit-founded project, which provides health care and nutrition to infants and children who are infected with the AIDS virus. Our program at St. Aloysius then sponsored David for his college studies, and he earned a Diploma in Social Work and Community Development. Together with other graduates of St. Aloysius, David started Foundation of Hope, a communitybased organization, serving youth in Kibera slum in such areas as AIDSawareness, sports programs, sanitation and skills for effective living. Since there is no free high school education in Kenya, we are taking youth who, because of their devastating family situation and due to their living in dire poverty, themselves speak of having been without hope for a high school education or of any way out of their desperate situation. Now, because of St. Aloysius, they have a bright future ahead of them with the opportunity for both an excellent high school education and college studies as well. Their education in the Jesuit tradition enables them to take their places in Kenya and in the world as men and women for others.

Former Brebeuf teacher Sara Compton, Learning Center Director Patti Brown and Jane Nolan

One of the most profound joys of my life is to be part of the miracle of hope being realized at St. Aloysius. There can be no doubt in my mind of the essential connection between St. Aloysius today and Brebeuf Jesuit, which opened its doors me 49 years ago and invited me to become all I could be in terms of the values in which I was formed at Brebeuf, values which we enunciate today as: intellectually competent, religious, loving, committed to doing justice and open to growth. Our connection is not only based in what I received during my 4 years at Brebeuf, it continues to be forged through visits of Brebeuf faculty, administrators and students to St. Aloysius, the most recent just concluding this week. One of our students and one teacher from St. Aloysius have been able to visit Brebeuf. Over the years, the student government at Brebeuf has engaged in fund-raising activities to help support our free school. One common research project has been completed between students from the two schools. I am so pleased to see Brebeuf and St. Aloysius partnering in service for our students in terms of our common ideals. As I receive the McCashland Award, I accept it as a challenge to all of us Brebeuf alumni, whether in Indianapolis, in Nairobi or in various other places around the country and around the world, to keep taking up the challenges of our Brebeuf and Jesuit education to reach out in our world as men and women for others.
