ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE Tin Shop Artist: Damien Noll Herault, France Oct 15–Nov 15 solar pyrography Damien Noll uses the sunlight to draw. His only tools are the sun, a magnifying lens, and a burnable surface. In his latest work on animal skulls and bones, the final markings, like a black line tattoo, are individual to each piece. The markings become a sort of outfit for passage onto the next, more ghostly realm. The immaterial rays of sunlight give new context, new meaning and new life to otherwise forgotten lives. It’s a resurrection of sorts. Burn, Baby, Burn: Solar Pyrography Tin Shop | Sat, Oct 20 + 27, 1–3pm, all ages, FREE Learn about the art of pyrography, a simple and natural process that you can do at home. All participants will take home an engraved piece of wood. Skeleton Engravings Tin Shop, Fri 3–4pm + Sat 12, 2 + 4pm, all ages, FREE. EXHIBITIONS Justin Favela: Ofrenda Gallery@OMH, Old Masonic Hall, FREE Nov 2, 2018–Jan 13, 2019 Opening Reception (part of Día de los Muertos) |Fri, Nov 2, 5:30–8pm; Artist Talk, 6:30pm Inspired by the cultural hybridity evident in the architecture and design of his hometown of Las Vegas, Justin Favela’s paper landscapes pulls imagery from casinos, tourist shops, expansive American shopping malls, and the over-the-top appropriation of Italian luxury. The piñata material evokes the festivity of Spanish celebrations and festivals, while the extreme nature of the installation embraces a slightly absurd experience, blurring the lines between what is real and surreal. Exhibition-related events: Working Studio Hours with Justin Oct 15–Nov 18 Old Masonic Hall | Fri, 1–5pm, all ages, FREE Meet Justin Favela and help him build his immersive installation made of piñata materials. Published by Breckenridge Creative Arts | ISSUE NO. 12, Fall/Winter2018
/krē’āt/ /krē’āt/ is an online magazine published triannually by Breckenridge Creative Arts. Each issue profiles a creative individual or business, cultural organization, event and object of art in a thoughtfully curated visual journey that aims to highlight and promote the greater creative community of Breckenridge. Available September 1, our fall/winter issue explores hybrid culture through a large-scale “piñata painting” by Justin Favela and local community members that integrates symbols of the Latinx/ Chicano experience with cross-cultural icons. It spotlights Summit County’s folkloric dance troupe, Baile Folklórico del Valle, as well as artistic collaborations with local schools.
