We’ve managed another one, phew! In the Breeze office, the end of 2011 flew by in a blur. A gratifying blur. We are so very grateful for the support and encouragement we have received. Each day brings another lovely comment and it means a lot to us. Creating Breeze was an act of faith and we have been more than rewarded for it. This month we must send out a thank you to the wonderful community in Killcare and Hardys Bay. All sorts of exciting things are happening there. So much so that we decided to concentrate our efforts with a thorough exposé of the area. We hope you enjoy exploring what is definitely one of Australia’s most beautiful corners. And only 90 minutes from Sydney’s CBD! Despite our Killcare concentration, we couldn’t let a significant event such as the 60th birthday of the picture theatre

Breeze magazine at Avoca Beach go by. We delve a little into its fascinating history and see what the theatre is up to now. We have had some serious talent behind the lense this issue, besides our usual talent, that is. Lisa Haymes is to thank for most of the beautiful Bouddi Peninsula images. Brigid Arnott shot the gorgeous home in Pretty Beach and Esther Beaton took stunning shots of a home in Killcare Heights, AND wrote the accompanying article. Thank you very much ladies! And last but not least we’ve had you, our readers, behind the lens too! Turn to page 20 to see if your summer shot made our pages. Thanks you to all who submitted photographs. It was tough to choose the final images!

Until next issue!x

Avoca Beach Picture Theatre recently celebrated a milestone, the 60th anniversary of their iconic building at Avoca Beach.

The

picture theatre business predates the building; having started in 1948 when Norman Hunter showed his first bush films to raise money for a community rock pool. At that time Avoca Beach was a rather isolated community, with no bridge across Avoca Lake and only a few dirt roads. When Norman and his family moved to what is now the top of Cliff Avenue, there was no road at all - Norman had to build one. The bush films proved to be quite a hit and continued to play through the summer months for the next couple of years. In 1951, Norman and his brother Mervyn decided to

build a small theatre. These were post-war years and building materials weren’t readily available. Plus there was the added effort of getting materials to the site. In the end, the building was constructed from local timber milled on-site and concrete bricks made by Marriots of Kincumber. The result was a charmingly authentic building, small and rustic in appearance but built to last. Now in the hands of Norman’s son (also Norman) and his wife Beth, Avoca Beach Picture Theatre is the last privately owned single screen theatre in NSW.

Its function today is not limited to showing a cracking yarn on the screen. Fittingly, given its origins, the theatre has a reputation for being both community oriented and events driven. It specialises in independent film, from opera to surfing, and hosts events such as Flickerfest and the Coasties Film Festival - a short feature competition for local filmmakers. Nowadays, going to Avoca Beach Picture Theatre has a real sense of occasion. The art deco grandeur of the foyer, the old fashioned snack bar and the red velvet seats all hark back to a more romantic

This unique space has something special for everyone: you can catch the New York Met Opera season here, or the latest animated children’s movie. There are themed movie nights with wine and canapÊs, dedicated family days and internationally acclaimed live events - David Helfgott, Simon Tedeschi and Adrian Cunningham have all graced the red-curtained stage of the theatre. It is even available for weddings and corporate events, which also make the most of the theatre’s large grassed area that overlooks the beach.

Brodie Donegan My life changed in a split second on Christmas Day

2009, when I was hit by a car which drove off the road. I was eight months pregnant. Because of the accident I lost my baby and suffered multiple injuries, including multiple hip fractures, a spinal fracture, a broken foot and my thigh was degloved. I had to have three surgeries. I was confined to bed for two weeks and in hospital for five weeks in total. I hated being in bed and I missed my daughter, Zoe, terribly. However, I made a decision early on to not feel sorry for myself or dwell on what should have been. I was told I would be on frames and crutches for three months, then at least another month with a walking stick. I was devastated but knew I needed goals to keep me focused and improving. I couldn’t control many aspects of my life but I could control how I approached my physio and rehabilitation. A few weeks after my accident, I decided to walk City2surf. In typical fashion (for me), I gave myself just under eight months to be

able to walk that far, despite only being able to walk a few metres on a zimmer frame before collapsing at the time. City2Surf was the perfect goal to aim towards physically, as well as financially, to raise funds for different charities in Zoe’s name.

Through sheer hard work and determination, I slowly built up enough strength to walk and in August I completed the City2surf in three and a half hours. I was ecstatic to raise, with the help of friends, family and colleagues, approximately $15,000 for Royal North Shore Hospital, Miracle Babies and Bears of Hope, all in Zoe’s name. Around this time I also found out I was expecting another baby. My injuries flared up but despite many physical setbacks, I gave birth to a gorgeous, healthy little boy in February. I returned to the gym as soon as possible, working to regain my strength and tame my injuries. This year I finished the City2Surf in two and a half hours and raised nearly $2000 for charity. Next year I hope to

jog it. I’ve been told I may not ever run, but that’s not going to stop me. I’m going to keep on working at it until I can. I want to be able to run, play with my kids, do that body attack class and those yoga poses like I used to. I’m not going to give up, I’m not going to take anything for granted and I’m going to try and honour our daughter’s memory wherever possible. And one day you’ll see me finishing a marathon, it may take me a while, but I will get there. The Handmade Craft Market will be raising money for Walk for Zoe on the 19th of February. Brodie has a charity auction running on Facebook from the 1st of February.

Bouddi Peninsula When it came time to commit cursor to screen and write some words about our feature area the Bouddi Peninsula - it proved much harder than expected. We had such a wealth of beautiful images that more than conveyed the attraction of the place, written words seemed almost superfluous. When describing such a physically beautiful environment you can quickly run out of superlatives and start sounding trite. The beach is stunning, one of the most pristine in the country. The bushland of the Bouddi National Park is arresting in its beauty, the glowing angophoras nothing short of magnificent. The bay is charming, delightful and altogether alluring.

See what I mean? It is very much the truth that this is one of the most beautiful areas that the Coast, and indeed the country, can offer up. It is a place that weaves magic. Many of the residents here are incomers, or even occasional-comers. That might not seem unusual in a coastal area but it is much more the case in this little pocket than in other areas nearby. The reason for that is simple - you get to the top of Wards Hill Road and whether you turn down to the beach or down to the bay, you are immediately hooked. A couple of weeks in a holiday rental might follow, and before long you are trawling real estate sites for a little cottage of your own. Close enough to the beach for a morning swim. Close enough to the bay for a fantastic coffee. And then? Well you never leave of course. You have found Nirvana! Beach, bush and bay. While researching the area I discovered that “Bouddi” is the local aboriginal word for heart. It explained everything. The beauty, the community, the ... “specialness”. So come along with us and discover this unique area that is just brimming with heart.

Where is the Bouddi Peninsula? The Bouddi Peninsula is located in the southeastern area of the Central Coast of New South Wales. The associated suburbs are Killcare, Killcare Heights, Hardys Bay, Pretty Beach and Wagstaffe. These all fringe the wonderful Bouddi National Park.

Bouddi National Park The southern tip of the Bouddi Peninsula has seven pristine beaches fringed by rainforests, sandstone cliffs and coastal heaths blanketed in wildflower colours, making Bouddi National Park one of the most diverse and inviting reserves within the greater Sydney area. There are many well-documented walking trails around Maitland Bay, Pretty Beach, Killcare Beach and the villages of Killcare, Hardys Bay and Wagstaffe. The Coastal Walk bush trails crisscross the Park, and arrive at Tallow, Lobster and Maitland Bay beaches. Walkers can enjoy spectacular views of Broken Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Vegatation consists of palm-dominated open rainforest, dry eucalypt forests, notable for the stunning red gums (Angophora costata) and coastal heathlands of banksia, hakea and tea-trees. The Park contains one of the last temperate rainforests on the Central Coast, known as Fletchers Glen. Bouddi National Park has the added advantage of keeping development down, which has maintained the almost cloistered atmosphere of the Peninsula’s enchanting villages and beaches. The community in turn ensures the Park is well maintained.

Now is a perfect season for bushwalking. Bouddi National Park is carpeted in Flannel Flowers at this time of year.

58

The bay and villages The scope of Bouddi Peninsula can be confusing, as the name Killcare is often used colloquially for the whole region. But officially, the Killcare area encompasses both the beach and bay side of the Peninsula and is flanked by the National Park. Killcare retains a small fishing village atmosphere but is centred around a cluster of surprisingly stylish shops, including yacht charters, an art gallery, hairdresser, fashion boutiques, restaurants, cafes and real estate agents. Killcare Marina has permanent moorings. The area has a strong, supportive community with many associations. Neighbouring Hardys Bay is named after Harry Hardy, who kept a small vineyard and sold wine to local residents. The history of Hardys Bay, Wagstaffe, Killcare and Pretty Beach are closely linked. Prior to European Settlement, Aboriginals from the coastal Guringai (Ku-ring-gai) tribe lived in and around Hardys Bay. Their rock carvings and middens are found in numerous locations around the area.

In 1789, Governor Arthur Phillip sailed north, entered Broken Bay and explored the surrounding coastline. By 1824, land was being granted for grazing. The only way to access Hardys Bay and the surrounding Peninsular was via ferry until 1936, when the Scenic Road was opened. Wagstaffe is named after Captain Wagstaffe, one of the first settlers in the area. It is a thin slither of houses between the bay and the bush, with a general store and post office. A ferry service operates between Wagstaffe and Palm Beach, Sydney. Travel time is about 30 minutes. Despite its name, Pretty Beach doesn’t face the sea but is part of Brisbane Water, making it a safe place for mooring boats (and for children to paddle). Some 200 people live in the immediate area. The main building is the Pretty Beach Public School, established in 1928. This picturesque school is one of the drawcards of the region.

The view from the historic “Old Killcare Store”, built in 1920 and today converted to a stylish tapas restaurant.

59

60

The beaches Killcare Beach is a beautiful south-facing beach that looks over to the northern beaches of Sydney. The beach is home to Killcare Surf Lifesaving Club, a modern state-of-the-art facility, and beach patrols are conducted during weekends and public holidays in the summer season. The northern end is referred to as Putty Beach, although correctly the entire beach is Putty Beach. This northern end is calm and quiet, great for kids and snorkelling. There is a fabulous boardwalk with stunning views north around the coast to Bullimah Beach. From there, you can continue on the Bouddi Coastal Walk to Maitland Bay. Lobster Beach is a lovely quiet little beach facing Umina across the water. It is reached via a series of stairs. Tallow Beach, south of Killcare Beach, is accessible by bush track.

And now let’s have a look around and meet some of those people who have followed the track to Killcare ...

the bouddi gallery

Jody Deamer established Killcare’s Bouddi Gallery – Contemporary Aboriginal Art in 2007, to raise awareness of Australia’s Indigenous culture. Inside you’ll find an extensive range of entry-level Indigenous art by new and emerging artists from Aboriginal-owned Art Centres. Many of the pieces are normally unavailable outside Aboriginal communities. The Indigenous artworks range from canvas, paper and bark paintings to homewares, fabrics, figurines, ceramics, carvings, glass, weavings, covered notebooks, gifts and jewellery – all at prices that the average customer can afford. In this sense, “entrylevel” means that Bouddi Gallery is one of the few places where you don’t have to be a wealthy art collector to own or give something indigenous and authentic. Jody’s personal and professional philosophy is: From little things, big things grow. She is a passionate advocate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the contemporary issues these peoples face. In fact, the concept for Bouddi Gallery

emerged in response to her growing frustration with the misinformation and misrepresentation of Aboriginal people that she felt underpinned a general ignorance and lack of understanding among nonindigenous Australians. As John F. Kennedy said, “The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.” Her initial interest in Aboriginal art and culture began when she was an art student in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Jody worked in the live music industry alongside Aboriginal band Yothu Yindi. Incredibly moved by Aboriginal art and music, she realised her knowledge of Australia’s First Peoples was shockingly inadequate and embarked on a journey of self-education that included extensive travel and cultural exposure. During this time, she developed relationships with Aboriginal-owned Art Centres and eventually, after a career in retail fashion management, marketing and business skills training, she relocated to

67

NSW’s Central Coast and opened Bouddi Gallery. Jody sources the gallery’s art from Art Centres in the Kimberley, the Central and Western deserts, Arnhem Land and The Tiwi Islands. When she spoke about her experiences with Aboriginal culture, Jody noticed most people had a genuine and enthusiastic desire to learn more themselves, but did not know how to subtly go about it. She says, “I came to realise that I had the perfect background and motivation to create an art space where people could be encouraged to ask questions without feeling foolish. And I could bring to the market the extraordinary range of art that I was so moved by on my trips to remote art communities.” In order to expose Aboriginal people, their art and culture to a wider audience, Bouddi Gallery often hosts artists from remote communities, who talk about and demonstrate their art making in the gallery. These events have been widely attended and very effective. Jody is most inspired by Mahatma Ghandi who believed, “We must become the change we want to see.” And so, she remains committed to encouraging non-indigenous Australians to raise their awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and become more active in their support for Australia’s First Peoples. Jody runs Bouddi Gallery on a not-for-profit basis; money generated by sales goes back into broadening the Art Centres that the gallery represents. This means that Jody

travels often and widely to remote areas, in order to build and maintain relationships. In 2011, she returned from a trip to the Tiwi Islands’ Art Centres with fabrics, painting and carvings, and she has a trip to remote Western Desert areas scheduled for 2012. Jody details her travel in her blog on Bouddi Gallery’s website. Since opening Bouddi Gallery, Jody has achieved a reputation as a person of integrity in the Indigenous Art sector. She is currently formalising her interests by studying a Bachelor of Arts (Indigenous Studies), majoring in art. Jody regularly attends cultural, music and art festivals to ensure she is actively engaged in indigenous current affairs and uses Bouddi Gallery’s twitter account to keep its followers upto-date on cultural events and important indigenous issues being discussed and aired in the media.

BOT TOM: In June 2010, senior Pitjantjatjara artists, Lulu and Billy Cooley, travelled from their homelands, near Amata on the NT/SA border, to Bouddi Gallery to demonstrate how ‘walka boards’ are made. ‘Walka boards’ are unique to the artists of the Aboriginalowned art centre, Maruku Arts, at Mutitjulu (Uluru). ‘Walka boards’ are made by burning patterns into wood using hot wire, then sometimes painting designs over the top.

The art of the Tiwi Islands is distinctly different from other Aboriginal art, even from that of indigenous neighbours in Arnhem Land. For example, in the art of body painting (jilamara) the patterning is primarily decorative, with an emphasis on strength of design rather than on narrative.

Sarah and Mike Stride made the move from country Canberra to Killcare back in 2006. With three young boys, the pull of the Central Coast’s laidback lifestyle, not to mention great beaches and wonderful scenery, was irresistible. They initially started with a restaurant in the Hardys Bay RSL Club, but eighteen

months later Sarah and Mike changed track and opened The Fat Goose. Set on the slope up from the Hardys Bay waterfront and ferry wharf, The Fat Goose’s outdoor seating takes full advantage of the magnificent view and the cool bay breeze. It’s the prefect place

75

76

to pause for breakfast, lunch or just an excellent coffee. And four-legged visitors are more than welcome too. The Fat Goose is famous for its artisan breads and pastries, both throughout the Central Coast and beyond. Two years ago, Sarah and Mike were approached by Brian Lizotte to make speciality breads for his Lizotte’s restaurants. Since then, standing orders from a stream of other restaurants and cafes seeking classic Italian artisan breads have followed. To keep up with demand, Sarah and Mike opened a wholesale bakery, called the Sea Goose, in October 2011. Operating seven days a week, the Sea Goose bakes and delivers fresh artisan bread and pastries to cafes and restaurants up and down the coast. Building on the success of The Fat Goose, they have also established a catering business, serving delicious food at functions from Sydney to the Hunter Valley.

78

Despite these rapid business expansions, the original “Goose” at Hardys Bay remains the soul of Sarah and Mike’s business. It has staked a place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike, and for many is a firm favourite. Why? Because its breakfasts are legendary! “The Beached Whale”, the Fat Goose’s big breakfast, is a huge platter of bacon, fried eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, white bean cassoulet and delicious Toulouse sausage. “The Wharfie” is a little more modest in size but equally delicious - Toulouse sausage served on a seedmustard hash topped with poached eggs

and wild rocket. For a sweeter option it is hard to go past “The Lifesaver” Canadian-style French toast and primecut bacon finished off with maple syrup. The lunch menu is just as addictive and The Fat Goose’s dedication to coffee perfection is nothing short of marvellous. For those diners who prefer to eat offsite there is a prize-winning range of deli items and takeaway options, including gourmet pies, pizzas and pastries. So what about the sea change and laidback lifestyle? Amazingly, Sarah, Mike and

the boys still find time to embrace the tranquil beachside life they moved for six years ago. The inexhaustible Sarah is active in the local Surf Life Saving Club and has recently competed at national levels in club rowing.

The Fat Goose has been placed in the SMH Good Food Guide three years running, and the Foodies’ Guide to Sydney two years running. Click here to purchase the 2012 Foodies’ Guide to Sydney iPhone App!

The Rip Bridge to Hardys Bay

Elkhorn’s Instagr.am adventure We were recently admiring the Elkhorn blogspot when we noticed that Monique (a special Breezey-friend) had chronicled a low-tide journey to Hardys Bay (ie via sludgy water tracks) on Instagram. We were on to her immediately and she kindly offered to take our readers on the journey ...

“I’d like to share an instagram journey to one of my favourite local walks, one that always sets me up for a great start to the day. Timing’s important for this walk unless you would prefer to swim ... You can only access the track at low-tide which makes it extra adventurous. Okay, across the Rip Bridge and turn right!”

An imaginative addition to a 1900s weatherboard cottage creates a perfect, and award-winning, family home. Photography by Brigid Arnott

The original cottage is now the children’s domain, with four bedrooms and a play area. The rooms are furnished with secondhand finds and feature charming, whimsical murals.

The pavillion is sympathetic to the original cottage in its form, but contemporary in its details. It includes an entry, master bedroom suite and open plan living and kitchen area. The living areas take advantage of spectacular north-easterly views of Brisbane Water.

Read more ... Breathing walls The use of hinged solid core doors in the pavillion is an ingenious and affordable idea. Not only are they incredibly functional, allowing the owners to vary light and air movement within the house, they also form a stunning feature from both inside and outside. The use of different tones in earthy yet modern colours creates a huge, sculptural centrepiece for the home. Its solid functionality beautifully complements the recycled materials and fl ea market fi nds used throughout the home. The cross-ventilation aspect of the doors is so effective that no mechanical cooling is necessary, even at the height of summer. The intention of cross-ventilation is to keep a structure as naturally cool as possible to reduce reliance on electric fans and air conditioners. This is great for both the environment AND your bank balance. By positioning openings across from each other, good airflow can be maintained. This naturally pulls cooler air in and expels warmer air from your home.

There’s a peaceful revolution happening in the hills of Killcare Heights. A natural combination of skills, passion and the passing on of knowledge. This is Garden2Plate, the brainchild of Adam McCall, of Adam’s Garden, and Melissa and Ali from Full on Flavour, an event planning and catering company that specialises in vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Adam is a horticulturist and permaculturist who, after an epic adventure around the country, working on farms and picking fruit, was saddened by what he saw as our disconnect from food and the land we live on. He has become passionate about the backyard

veggie garden and through Adam’s Garden, helps build and maintain them. For Melissa and Ali, localism and quality are at the core of their catering business and they are passionate about supporting local producers. They are also committed to improving the wasteful nature of catering and reducing its impact on our planet by using biodegradable, reusable or recyclable products where possible. The coming together of Adam’s Garden and Full of Flavour completes the circle. Garden2Plate is an exciting and inspiring organic gardening and cooking

Velvet Blonde

Velvet Blonde , one of

the Central Coast’s most popular hair salons since its establishment in Wagstaffe in 2001, is in stunning premises in cosmopolitan Hardys Bay. While locals have long been in the loop, weekenders and holidaymakers can now enjoy a new level of sophistication in personal pampering and escape from city life.

Because a visit to the salon is “much-needed time out for our busy clientele,” explains Velvet Blonde proprietor Shelley King, “we’ve installed heated leather massage chairs at the basins and we have fresh flowers, velvet lavender eye bags and scented candles to soothe jangled nerves. We offer a complete sensory experience to our valued customers.

Shelley and her husband moved to Killcare 20 years ago with their young family. Shelley was working in fashion as a freelance hairdresser and makeup artist; her husband is a musician who is often on tour. It occurred to the couple that they had no real reason to stay in Sydney and Killcare beckoned. Ten years ago, Shelley opened a salon in

Wagstaffe, then five years on moved to Hardys Bay. Her current luxurious salon has a French opulence with scarlet velvet curtains, a chandelier and antique furniture sourced from around the world. In addition to hair and beauty products, Velvet Blonde stocks an exquisite range of hand-made Italian leather shoes, leather bags, belts and accessories. An assortment of silver and leather jewellery from Mexico is also available. And if you’re planning your special day, Velvet Blonde also provides wedding packages, including hair and makeup services for increasingly popular outof-town weddings. We strive to make a visit to “Velvet Blonde the ultimate relaxing experience for our clients,” said Shelley. “Next time you’re on the Central Coast, leave the family in the holiday house and indulge yourself.

L’anxaneta is a mouthful for most English speakers,

so when friends Mari-Carmen and Ana took over the heritage-listed “Old Killcare Store” two years ago, they had to decide if their restaurant name would be too difficult for people to pronounce.

The name has

a special significance: it describes the boy or girl that bravely climbs to the top of human castles, which are created to celebrate festivities in the Mediterranean part of Spain. The only way for the boy or girl to make it up safely is for everyone involved to work as a team a stay balanced. The friends decided this was a good description of their business and so the name stuck.

Photography by Lisa Haymes

119

Mari-Carmen and Ana come from very different parts from Spain. They met by chance more than 15 years ago while travelling Australia. Even though their meeting was brief and life circumstances kept them apart most of the time, their friendship stayed strong. Living in different cities, they never considered starting a business venture together until two years ago, when Mari-Carmen and her family moved to Killcare looking for quality of life and a quieter pace in a smaller community. When the local restaurant came up for sale, Mari-Carmen decided to convince Ana, who was living in Sydney, to give it a go. She didn’t take much convincing, as the beauty of the heritage-listed location and its stunning surroundings had her charmed almost instantly. The friends opted to do what they knew best and gave the restaurant a Spanish feel with bright colours and beautiful artwork from local resident, Mario Sanasi, inspired by Picasso and Miro.

122

Both Mari-Carmen and Ana come from families with good cooks and in deciding what items to put on the menu, they have stayed true to the dishes they grew up with. Getting the flavours just right took a bit of work, and the girls maintain tight control over the quality and consistency of the food to ensure it remains true to their heritage. Breakfast and lunch menus feature traditional Spanish dishes as well as some Mediterranean-style options. Fridays and Saturday nights are tapas nights. The shape of the lovely old building and the different areas make it suitable for big functions and special occasions, as

well as for those special intimate dinners. Kids are welcome and well catered for, with favorites like meatballs, chorizo and lamb and chicken skewers sure to tempt even the fussiest eaters. For those who prefer to eat at home, catering options range from pick-up platters to full dinner events. Tapas food is great for both sitdown and finger-food functions. To keep things interesting for their customers, Mari-Carmen and Ana organise special events, such as Flamenco nights, Salsa classes with dinner, Bossa Nova band performances and the popular Paella nights. The “Old Killcare Store” has been at the centre of the small Hardys Bay community since 1920. In this very different incarnation, Mari-Carmen and Ana are ensuring that is still is.

A Mediterranean Spirit by Esther Beaton

Perched high on the hilltop above Killcare, with stunning views

of both Brisbane Water and the Pacific Ocean, is a

Mediterranean-style villa to rival any in Italy or France. “We call it the Côte d’Azur of the Central Coast”, says Herta Gruber, standing on one of the balconies and sweeping her arms across the view. Her husband, Wolf Gruber, adds,“In Monaco, the Palace Grimaldi holds a landmark position. Here, our house holds a landmark position. That’s why we call it Grubaldi.” Although this house looks nothing like the Palace Grimaldi, it is nevertheless unique in its structure and famous in its history. The house was hand-built by Oskar Speck, an unemployed electrician who paddled a kayak single-handed from Germany to Australia. His story is so fantastic that he is memorialized with a permanent exhibition at the Maritime Museum in Sydney. Speck set off in 1932, planning to return for the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he was a favourite to win gold in kayaking. But in that fateful year he was laid up in a primitive hospital in Timor, having been robbed and left for dead. After another misadventure, this time with malaria, Speck obtained a new kayak from his sponsors, one of which was Kodak, and continued his round-the-world adventure.

130

131

132

Unfortunately his luck didn’t improve when he reached Australia in 1939. As Speck paddled ashore on one of the Torres islands, proudly displaying the swastika, he was promptly interred in a prisoner of war camp. Unbeknown to him, war had just broken out and because he was loaded with Kodak cameras he was taken for a spy. He was imprisoned - except for one brief but failed escape attempt - for the six-year duration of the war. Within days of his release in 1945, Speck was in Lightning Ridge staking out a claim. He must have succeeded with opals because a few short years later he was the owner of eight acres of land at Killcare Heights. He

built, by hand, a cottage at one end of the property and an opal-cutting workshop at the other. Today, after several subdivisions, the Grubers own the original house on about one hectare of land, while their neighbour retains “the workshop”. Although Speck designed his 1950s house with as many views as possible, it was small. By the time it came into the Grubers’ hands nine years ago, it had been extensively remodelled and extended. Today, a central breezeway connects what were distinct buildings and melds them into one flowing design. The multiple rooflines follow the original with its oriental curves, no doubt emulated by Speck after his Asian travels.

133

To say there are two living rooms and five bedrooms would be an understatement. Each room in the house has a charm reflective of its purpose. Wolf explains, “Speck built it according to the architect’s rule of the golden mean, a ratio of 5:8, which you don’t see anymore. You feel its influence; it calms you.” Wolf’s favourite room is furnished in a drawing-room style, with an Oriental rug and artefacts picked up from the Grubers’ years in Malaysia. The bedroom upstairs greets the elements with two walls of glass that are completely movable. Here Herta also feels a sense of calm. “It’s very nice to go to sleep after a busy day and hear the ocean, sometimes it’s really pounding. It’s very soothing,” she says.

Guests are frequent, drawn by the house’s charm and the Grubers’ hospitality. Herta’s cooking fits the Mediterranean mood. Her Italian background, from South Tyrol, means much of her cooking bears an Italian influence. Fresh herbs from the garden tarragon, sage, lime and bay leaves - which Herta generously tosses into most dishes, add to the appeal.“People come for lunch and stay all day,” says Wolf.“It’s the Italian flair; we eat and chat the afternoon away, then walk in the garden and by the time we come back we’re ready for coffee or another drink.” The food, as fresh and delicious as it is, is not the only thing that keeps a grip on guests. The view is captivating from every room and from every angle of the house. As visitors are drawn outside towards the panorama, their eyes soon drop and grow large, taking in the breadth of the garden that spreads out below their feet. It, too, bears the Mediterranean stamp, with terraces

of olive trees interspersed by small lawns, flowerbeds and quixotic touches of art. The many interwoven concrete pathways, originally laid by Speck, beckon visitors to roam the garden. The Grubers employed a landscape architect, the well-known Michael Cooke, to meld the outdoor area into one that highlights the house. Friend Annie Wilkes, former owner of Sydney’s Parterre Garden and a famous Sydney garden designer, also advised “mass-planting is the key”. In response, Herta mass-plants both flowers and objects in every nook of the garden. “We’re constantly working to discipline it, to structure it,” says Wolf. “A garden is like a canvas and the rake and shears are your paint brushes.”

140

141

142

As the sun travels lower across the sky, the vibrant mood swings to one full of calm. Wolf tries to put the feeling into words: “If you close your eyes then open them, you can’t put your finger on exactly where you are. Sometimes when we have a morning fog and mist it looks like the tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia”. The Grubers are outdoor people and love the inside-out appeal of their scaled-down Mediterranean “palace”. But they also appreciate the uniqueness of what they have inherited - the spirit of an adventurer that continues to inhabit the hilltop. “I never dreamt I’d own such a beautiful place,” says Herta, before she pauses and concludes, “But really we don’t own anything, we’re just passing through.”

Our thanks to Esther Beaton for this story. Esther is a Central Coast local and awardwinning nature photographer. She has spent 30 years photographing in remote regions of Australia, discovering its unusual wildlife, amazing flora and interesting people.

“I make sure that all the technical

and artistic elements harmonize with a subject to bring out its essence and beauty.
