Read about what life is like for them now in Personality. Looking for somewhere to eat during Valentine’s Day? Why not try Warehouse 32? All this inside a warehouse turned into modern restaurant which is featured in Restaurant Review. Many more to read in this issue but I really want to highlight our exclusive Valentine’s Day contests with MasWings and Mama Florist. You don’t want to miss joining them. Look for them through the next set of pages and find out how you can win a trip for two to Mulu, Sarawak or even win a bouquet of flowers for your loved one! Have a great read and Happy Valentine’s Day to those who celebrate. Also, Happy 20th City Day to Kota Kinabalu City!

AVERY FOS RELEASED NEW SINGLE CHILD Kota Kinabalu, 7 January 2020 - Borneon music duo Avery Fos has released their new single Child. Child is a song about the growing pains of leaving behind the wide-eyed inner child as we step into adulthood. This song also paints a picture on the ongoing tug of war of growing and maturing as a person and yet not losing a sense of childlike innocence and purity towards the world. Named after the word “Light” in Greek, Avery Fos is made up of Elisha and Phoebe. With a sonic direction similar to the likes of M83 and RKCB, the duo crafts atmospheric, ethereal, sountrack-like music triggered by midi keyboards and drum machines, completed by Phoebe’s warm lush vocals. For Child, Avery Fos worked with Sabahan illustrator, Fish Dayuu to create the artwork for the track. Avery Fos also partnered with videographer Al Hanafi J. and his team, Tiru Creative to produce the captivating music video. The meaning of valentine’s day
V
alentine’s Day is a celebration of love and appreciation towards your loved ones. With it being just around the corner, let’s have a look at couples around Kota Kinabalu and see what Valentine’s Day means to them and what are their plans to celebrate it. Whether you celebrate it or not, you can’t deny it’s important for us to have an appreciation for those close to us.
GJ
eorge& ofanna
Hi, we’re George and Jofanna. We’re both wedding photographers in Kota Kinabalu. We actually met each other through mutual friends. What does Valentine’s Day mean to you and what plans do you have for it? George: Valentine’s Day is the day to celebrate appreciation. To appreciate everything that your partner does, to appreciate the time spent together and to appreciate all the love poured into the relationship. Jofanna: For me, it’s celebration of love with your loved ones. George: I usually plan something simple for us, like dinner and movie. Jofanna: Yeah, just spending time together, nothing fancy really. Maybe a movie date.

We have been together since high school. We were in the same school, same classes, and same group of friends. It’s been a long journey, but we’re thankful to have faced everything together. I (Noel) write for Breeze and Marysia’s been very supportive about it. What does Valentine’s Day mean to you and what plans do you have for it? Noel: To me, it’s not only a day to be all lovey dovey, but also a day to be thankful. It’s a day to appreciate all the love and sacrifice we’ve done for each other. Marysia: It’s a day for remembrance of love. It’s not only a celebration between couples, but also with family and friends. Noel: I just plan to spend time with her really. Will definitely take her out to dinner at her favourite spot. Marysia: Honestly, I don’t mind what we do, as long as we spend the day together. But dinner does sound nice during Valentine’s Day.
I’m Jerome from Sabah and Yelena is from Baku, Azerbaijan. I work as a design consultant in the Oil and Gas industry while Yelena takes care of our cafe, Medovik. Speaking of work, that’s how we met, we were working under the same company in Baku in 1998. What does Valentine’s Day mean to you and what plans do you have for it? Jerome: It is one important day reminding you to show your love to your life partner and your family. A day to remind you to take a break and do something for you and your loved one. Yelena: It’s important to let our loved one know they’re your one and only even with our busy routines. So this is the day we can show to each other how much we love and care about each other.

erome& elena
Jerome: Unfortunately I won’t be around on the actual day but I will compensate on the next day. It doesn’t matter what, when, and how. What matters is your love one is beside you. Yelena: I’m a very romantic person. I planned a surprise for Jerome when he comes back from his work. I’ll make sure it’s really special because we don’t see each other often when he works.
Hi, we are Clinton and Lorraine, both Sabahans born and raised in Kota Kinabalu. Clinton (aka MKNK) is in the music industry and Lorraine designs jewellery for her brand, TALEE. We met 10 years ago through mutual friends. After Lorraine moved to Canada, it took us 10 years to re-connect through social media. We believe everything happens for a reason, and that reason is to prepare ourselves for the love we share now. What does Valentine’s Day mean to you and what plans do you have for it? Lorraine: It’s only our second Valentine’s Day celebrating together but we know from the beginning that it isn’t something we wait for to make each other special. Everyday is Valentine’s Day. A day to remind each other how grateful we are to one another and as a reflection on where our relationship is at.
Clinton & orraine L
Clinton: We spent our first Valentine’s Day together chatting through Skype and a meal 13 hours apart. We found a Prawn Pasta & Ceviche recipe online and cooked the same meal together through Skype. Lorraine suggested that we make this a yearly recipe to have on Valentine’s Day. Now that we are on the same time zone, we are looking forward to having it in real life together.

MUSIC
keep on chugging!
W
ith ever changing sounds shaking up the music scene, it certainly is a breath of fresh air to hear sounds that bring back many bittersweet memories. That’s just what Chugs On Deck presents to their audience, showcasing an energetic pop punk brand of music. With Jordan, Calvin, Bobby, Eyon, and Rafi making up the band, they’ve just released the music video of their song, Second Chance, on YouTube. How did you guys form? Jordan (J): Initially, it was just me and Eyon jamming around with different musicians. At the time, we’d call ourselves TBA (To Be Announced). Chugs On Deck officially formed in 2015 when all of us agreed to start it together. How did you come up with your name? Eyon (E): We wanted to portray our mannerisms on stage with the name. Chugs means explosive sound that usually relates to boats. So the name basically means “explosive on stage” with the ‘deck’ being the stage. What bands have influenced your sound? E: At first, I would say the French band “Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!” definitely had a little influence. But now I feel we have our own sound.
by Noel Jinguli Images | Chugs On Deck 14
J: Yeah, the more we play, the more distinct it is. I also feel it’s hard to put the songs we make into one box and say it’s all the same genre. We do experiment with them, but our sound does come out when someone listens to them. Tell us more about Second Chance. J: It’s the sequel to Abolisi. Second Chance tells the story of a broken relationship and the second chances given by both individuals. We want people to love themselves and take good care of their mental health, especially when someone else is involved. So, what’s next? J: We’ll be continuing with what we call the “Abolisi Universe” in terms of music and videos. We want to create awareness of mental health issues through them, because we feel people don’t pay much attention towards it. So just stay tuned, we do plan on releasing it as an album by the end of this year. Anything to add? This band has brought us all closer, not only to each other, but to our audience as well. As we travel to different states in Malaysia, we compare and learn something about the culture and music. Everything is a learning process actually. So if you’re ever starting something new, don’t ever give up and keep pushing yourself to succeed. Chugs On Deck is available on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music.

Chromebook is a laptop device that runs an operating system based on Chrome called Chrome OS instead of the conventional Windows. Chromebook buyers often sing Google docs high praises. But, I’ve never seen the appeal of having a Chromebook because the Microsoft Office suite is clearly the superior software, right? But recently, I’ve had a change of perspective. My fast-paced working environment has opened my eyes to the benefits of working on Google docs (And by extension, Chromebooks). The need to quickly fix and rewrite content on multiple projects at once made me realize one of the biggest cons of Microsoft office suite – it’s not a tool for teamwork. Google Docs is free and accessible on virtually every platform. The most useful feature it has is letting you share your working file with others via a link. This allows them to edit or comment on your work (in real-time), hastening the project’s overall progress. My previous workflow with Microsoft Office would’ve seen me lost in a loop of feedbacks and emails. Google Docs says goodbye to that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Microsoft Office is obsolete, not at all. If you work remotely, Google Office suite is a strong contender to consider.

CAPTAIN MARDIANA BT RAZALI
C
aptain Mardiana Bt Razali has 20 years worth of experience, serving as a pilot and instructor in the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and joined as an instructor under Layang Layang in August of 2019. She’s very passionate when it comes to teaching and sharing her experience with her students who are aspiring pilots. The lessons she taught in the RMAF is similar to what she teaches at Layang Layang now, which made the transition to be better than expected. “There’s not much difference,” Capt. Mardiana said when comparing the lessons between Layang Layang and the RMAF. As an instructor, she is focused on lessons with fixed-wing aircraft. Her main goal is for her students to be able to fly solo, handle, and manage emergencies. She also teaches her students to pull off rough manoeuvers during unexpected situations.

Capt. Mardiana believes that discipline is key for her students to succeed in this field and sees the potential in her students. “They can become great commercial pilots with the potential of working for any major airline,” she said. Capt. Mardiana works hard to teach her students, not just for them to be successful pilots, but also for her students to be able to handle tough situations in the future. She hopes that her lessons can make a difference in the future.

With 16-year old YouTubers, Social Media Influencers and millennials taking over the workplace and changing the way we work, think and live; it’s a very different vocation for career and education counsellors as we try to keep up with the fast changing times! So, why do we still do what we do? I think and still believe that a University degree is the new high school diploma. BUT, the way we choose our degree has

That’s where universities with a sandwich year comes in. For example, the UK have a number of universities offering this course structure and countries like Switzerland offer Hospitality and Global Business Management courses with paid internships embedded in the course. IEC represents two prestigious hospitality institutions in beautiful Lucerne, Switzerland. They offer a 6 month study, 6 month paid-work structure which allows students to practice what they learn. t’s rare to see shops around Kota Kinabalu implementing a “Zero Waste” concept let alone embracing it entirely. The Crafty Peacock does exactly that. Managed by Katie King and Paul Owen, they’ve turned their passion for conserving our environment into a mission to create and spread awareness. The charming shop in Kota Kinabalu specializes in providing its customers with reusable products for daily life.
Katie wants to give consumers an environmentally-friendly choice while still being economical. It shows too as the prices on the products are all really reasonable. She understands that a certain stigma of being environmentally friendly is the “snobbiness” aspect of it, but she wants to eliminate that way thinking and include everyone to understand the importance of conservation.
Throughout her stay here as a conservationist, Katie has seen a lot of changes in the environment. She’s witnessed how locals and tourists simply throw away disposable items without considering or understanding the impacts of their actions. That’s when they decided to help reduce the waste around Kota Kinabalu by setting up The Crafty Peacock.
We should expect more shops like this to pop up as The Crafty Peacock has certainly received a great reception, both from locals and tourists alike. With that said, the concept of being waste-free might be considered a trend these days, but it’s a trend that I hope can catch on and evolve into a culture in the future.
The store is divided into two separate shopping experiences, one featuring handmade fashion accessories, the other reusable products for daily use. Some of the jewellery they feature come from local designers such as O’Kiara and JAF. Apart from that, they sell reusable bottles and cups, bamboo cutlery, and also bamboo and stainless steel straws. They even sell soap that they handmade themselves. What’s unique about The Crafty Peacock is how they promote refilling soaps and detergents through their refill stations. Customers can come with their bottles, or buy one from the shop, and refill their share of soap when they need to. Katie wants to develop this further in the future so consumers don’t need to rely on getting them from supermarkets and throwing away the used bottles.

VELVET & RICH: FROM LOVERS TO PARENTS
h, February. The month of romance, roses, and chocolates. think that Valentine’s Day is more than just a one-day romantic Lots and lots of chocolate! That one day where people candlelight dinner but for some, Netflix & ordering in is the way would go extra to celebrate their relationship. Some people may to go. In this issue, we had the pleasure of asking our very own Sabahan power couple; Velvet Aduk and Rich Gimbang on their views towards Valentine’s Day among other things. Having met during the Akademi Fantasia 4 reality TV show, this bubbly couple has been married since 2008, have 4 kids and are thriving by Iffah Hazirah as parents, artists and also business owners. rowing up in a household where everybody loves music, Rich has been singing for as long as he can remember. After he finished secondary school, he decided to pursue a music course in college where he met one of the surviving members & guitarist of his band; Estranged where they would perform in the underground music scene and him being the vocalist of the band. Rich admitted that auditioning for AF4 was something out of his comfort zone. He thought it was farfetched at first because it was not something that he would pursue but his dad managed to convince him to go and try out and it proved to be a good platform for him to gain a different exposure and more diverse audience personally as a singer and also for Estranged. He is currently still with the band and actively producing music and never stopped hoping for the best in the future, but recently he realizes that deep down inside he wanted to contribute back to the society and help build the music scene here especially in Sabah. Since a lot of his friends mentioned that Rich is established and experienced enough to help and guide the music scene here in KK, he decided to open his own event company called Bornaya Records and through this he already managed a few music events namely Rockneo which gathers talented Sabahan bands and provide them with a platform to showcase their work. He wanted to venture into filmmaking as well and he has so far tried making his own music video for Estranged as well as for Velvet and Marsha. Having based in KL while his wife and family are in Sabah, Rich has to constantly fly back to see his family. While laughing he mentioned that when he was young, he thrives at the thought of being disconnected with people and being independent living in the big city. But as he aged, he wanted nothing more than to
Richael “RICH” Gimbang be connected especially with his family and the flights home is something that he looks forward to every time. Other than aiming to produce his own feature film someday, he also wants to focus on building the music scene through Rockneo and perhaps work onto getting grants and funds to support their cause. Estranged also has been working with NGOs doing social work where they managed to build hydroelectric plants in various rural villages in Ranau. The ability to help these small villages to get working electricity is very satisfying and gave him the sense of contentment because of their ability to help people in need. He also would love to focus more into building his family and raise his kids to be good individuals. When it comes to Valentine’s day, he believes that you don’t have to wait for this one day to show your appreciation towards your other half. Everyday should be Valentine’s Day. Go out and have fun. Take your time to go out with friends, family, just spend quality time together. But when it comes to his wife, he is going to take her out for a nice dinner and treat her like a queen because it is also her birthday! Word of advice to aspiring musicians; be a good example not only to the people around you, but you yourself too which is a great way to start a career in music. Despite how cliché this next advice maybe, always be yourself is a very important advice too. Last but not least, always be patient and stay positive. Fun Fact: Rich can be quite the talking machine and could go on for hours
27
After AF4 ended, she decided to pursue her singing career in KL for a while doing tours and performing on-stage. In 2008 she finally tied the knot with her husband, Rich whom she met during AF4. She made the decision to return to Sabah in 2010 after having their 1st child and decided that Sabah is the perfect place to raise children. She moved back here and has stayed ever since. Due to her love of baking, she opened a cupcake shop in Kota Kinabalu and it was doing great but after a year, due to some unforeseen circumstances, her baking business was put to a halt indefinitely. She decided to put her focus more on song writing alongside running their bed and breakfast business in Tambunan while working at the radio station all together. When it comes to writing songs, Velvet is often inspired by her surroundings. From how she feels, what she saw around her and sometimes her mood. After the single Oi Gaman were released last year, it became a hit and happy to say that Velvet and Marsha are coming out with another collaboration which will be released May this year. This talented artist not only write songs for herself but also others. Her latest song will also be released this month of February. When asked, this mother of four agreed that it is not easy balancing between parenthood and career. It helps to have a maid that they could trust with handling some of the household chores and by living in KK, it is easy to ask family members for help when and if she needed to. Velvet mentioned that it does get easier over time because the kids are growing and are able to take basic care of themselves now. She is also grateful with the nature of her work which is quite flexible and does not have any problem with employers bringing kids to the workplace.
Velvet Lawrence Aduk
Born on Valentine’s Day itself, Velvet’s idea of Valentine is not as dramatic. It is basically spending quality time with family because she admits that their life now revolves mostly around the kids. They do take time to travel sometimes but not without bringing their children along which she truly enjoys. Even though her husband is based in KL, they always make a point to spend time with each other and prioritize their family.
Her advice to aspiring young artist is to have the passion ne of the finalists in the season 4 of the famous reality show when it comes to the entertainment business. If you aim for Akademi Fantasia (AF4), Velvet, has always been active singing popularity, you won’t get far. Work hard for it, produce good all her life so she naturally wanted to be a singer. Currently working stuff and share it to the world! as a radio announcer at Kupi Kupi Fm, Velvet hasn’t always been working solely in the entertainment industry. She also used to work Fun Fact: She enjoys hanging out with her aunts having as a kindergarden teacher and has been in the hospitality industry meals and non-stop conversation before she decided to audition for AF4 back in 2006 and the rest is history.

WELLNESS
LOVE YOURSELF EVERY SINGLE DAY
F
ebruary 14- one of the annually most celebrated holidays which brings good news for the economy as it well may be a moneymaker day for a handful of industries such as the candy companies, florists, jewelry and restaurants. Have we stereotyped Hallmark’s holiday commercially? What is the true essence of Valentine’s day?
relationship that you have with yourself. It is a reminder to live in love. So why not sit down and take some time off to reflect on what wellness means to you, your partner and other important people in your life.
If we trace back history, Valentine’s day used to be celebrated annually as part of a fertility ceremony during the Roman empire period. Animal sacrifices and women qued up to be whip with the hides by men were part of the bizarre rituals. Further down in history, two men named Valentine were executed by the Roman Emperor- both of whom were martyred by the Catholic church- giving us the name St. Valentine’s Day. Fast forward into the future, celebrants started to exchange homemade gifts and the commercialization of Valentine’s day kicked off in the early 20th century when Hallmark started mass producing greeting cards.
Valentine’s day isn’t an important milestone in your relationship, it is just like any other day to be dynamic, be active in making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life for yourself, loved ones and friends. Listen to yourself, explore and practice the appropriate “tools” in life to make you a happier human being. We only get one life to live so be compassionate to yourself, embark on a self-discovery journey in learning to love yourself every single day. When the soul smiles, the body resonates with good health, happiness, and vitality!
History tells us it was about sacrifices and execution, and if we put it into the modern context what would it be and perhaps we may want to rethink Valentine’s day? The day isn’t just about romance and buying stuff, it is to appreciate loved ones, friends and even a good opportunity to focus on the

Currently a Consultant Cardiologist and Physician in KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital, Damai, Dr Edward mentioned that back in the 1980’s there was only one cardiologist in Sabah and a very small number of specialists as oppose to Kuching which already had quite a number of specialists available. By choosing to be posted to Sabah, he could contribute more towards the society and that was his main reason coming back to Malaysia. Being a doctor then was quite a challenge too. Dr Edward mentioned that due to the lack of doctors, he had to work very long hours but he also gained valuable experience in dealing with a wider range of patient conditions and this enables him to manage patients with multiple illnesses effectively. Always striving to be the best, Dr Edward constantly keeps himself updated with new information and technology in his field. Currently, he is the only one in Sabah who has the latest echocardiogram machine that could detect even the mildest myocardial deformation as Dr Edward only wants the best for his patients. Intermittent fasting How to do intermittent fasting? The easiest method of doing intermittent fasting is to skip either breakfast or dinner. By skipping one of those meals you can easily put yourself in a 16 hours fasting cycle, giving yourself an 8 hour window to eat your meals. You should start out slowly first by eating brunch or eating an early dinner to see how your body reacts to the fast. As your body starts to get used to it you can easily extend the fasting window. Keep it simple and don’t worry if you don’t hit your fasting targets early on. You can always start again after you eat. Yes it is as easy as that!
I
ntermittent fasting is a powerful technique where you put the body in a fasted state for a certain period of time by not ingesting any food or calories. During the fasted state hydration is maintained and being active is encouraged. Addressing the elephant in the room first, I just want to make it clear: skipping a meal or two is NOT going to put you into starvation mode. The body has more than enough energy stores(in the form of fat mostly) to last a number of days, as well as certain minerals and vitamins in store. Now that is out of the way, here are some benefits of intermittent fasting that should be in your mind when you start off: •
• • •
Better hormonal control: It helps to regulate certain hormones such as insulin which is vital for blood sugar level as well as increasing growth hormone which has a lot of anti aging benefits. Cellular repair: Being in the fasted state increases this process. Autophagy(which is the recycling of damaged or non-performing cells into more functional ones). Help in losing weight. Reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. It reduces free radicals in the body which is related to aging and other medical conditions.
There are other benefits but these four would be the most important ones since it is directly involved with being in a fasted state.

One thing to bear in mind however is that using this technique does not mean you can just eat anything you want, as much as you want. Controlling your portions and also eating nutritious food is still important and will really boost your results. Keep fit and healthy guys!

R
omance is in the air! Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. February 14 marks the “day of love” and all of us know the tradition of giving flowers and chocolates to loved ones. However, do you know the history and superstitions surrounding Valentine’s Day?
POP CULTURE
married. St. Valentine secretly performed wedding ceremonies for soldiers before he was caught. From that day on, people celebrated Valentine’s Day to commemorate his death. Other versions however included sacrifices made to appease Roman gods. Personally, I prefer St. Valentine’s act of courage and love rather than the other versions.
Well, history wise, there are a few versions of how this tradition originated. The “friendly” version tells the story of St. Valentine Did you know? There are also a few superstitions that some disobeying a Roman law that prohibited soldiers from getting people adhere to. Some believe you can “predict” your future and future romances through the food you eat and the types of birds you see throughout the day. Whether you believe in these or not, it sure is interesting to know the different beliefs people hold for such a special day. Apart from it’s history and superstitions, here are just a few facts that might interest you about Valentine’s Day. The first Valentine was a poem sent in 1415 by a French duke to his wife. In America alone, an estimated $19.6 million is spent on Valentine’s gifts. Some people also give gifts to their pets too. In the end, it doesn’t matter how you celebrate, what you believe in, or how much you spend for your Valentine. What matters is how much you care and love them for who they are. It might be trivial, but you’d be surprised how people tend to misinterpret the meaning of Valentine’s Day.

hef Karel Soulard originates from the Atlantic oceanside town of Royan, France. Growing up into the world of pastries, he learned French cuisine as well. He moved to Sabah in 2008 to be a chef and then a consultant for 4 and 5-star hotels. When his daughter was born, Chef Karel decided to bake his own bread and pastries at home with the French touch while excluding chemical preservatives and shortening. Soon he was able to distribute his bread and pastries under the brand name of “La Baguette” all over Sabah. He opened his bakery called “Au Fournil D’Eva” which translates to “The heart of Bakehouse” since that’s where the oven is placed and where the magic happens turning dough to bread or cakes, while Eva is the name of Chef Karel’s daughter. His favourite local pastry is the kuih honeycomb among others like kuih onde-onde and kuih batik. Chef Karel said it was initially challenging to adapt to local food, but now he prefers Chinese style cooking in Sabah. Nevertheless, he still includes bread and croissant in his daily diet.

His best moment in Sabah was the day he met his wife, Shirley. When he first came here, he wasn’t even able to speak English well. As time went on and the more he got along with his Sabahan colleagues, he was able to speak and understand Malay and English to communicate. This multilingual ability also runs in his family as his daughter knows how to speak 4 languages and his wife knows 7, not including French yet. Chef Karel will miss the relaxing and easy-going lifestyle in Sabah if he ever needs to move. He loves the culture and the green environment around him. By the sound of that, Karel has made Sabah his home.

I
n the hay days, the Karamunsing Warehouses located opposite the Sacred Heart cathedral was buzzing with major businesses; it was nearly a ghost area at one point. Today, not only a number of furniture stores and new businesses now resides in this area but also a newly established hotel and a warehouse bistro. Kazaf, a graphic designer turned restaurateur made her lifelong dream into reality when she founded and established Warehouse 32 Kitchen & Bar, opening its doors in June 2019 at Karamunsing Warehouse (facing the main road). Her love for food and hanging out with friends with great food lead her to this journey. The industrial, shabby-chic and chill interior was the result of Kazaf ’s goal was to infuse the entire space with raw materials and elements; while sourcing materials and designing the space all by herself. The entire space is adorned with the greenest indoor faunas, exposed cement seats (and even sinks!) and high ceilings that makes the entire warehouse look super spacious. would give any hipster bistro a run for its money; all while serving hearty upgraded versions of delectable food. You will likely spot hearty dishes anchored by meat and more meat. Kazaf first served us with the Ultimate Nachos, one of several types of snacks they have available. This classic Tex-Mex dish is regularly served as a shared snack or appetizer, consisting of nachos made from tortilla chips, tomato salsa, jalapenos, beef and melted cheeses. W32’s version is delectable and best enjoyed with a mug of beer – additional portions of tomato salsa and beef is also provided. Next, we were introduced to W32’s bestselling sandwich, The Boss which consists of pulled 16 -hour smoked beef brisket, beef bacon, caramelized onion, and grilled in butter with cheddar, cream cheese & queso cheese. This meaty and juicy 16-hour smoked beef brisket sandwich satisfies and nourishes the hungry soul to its core the way that the amazing and brilliant treasure that has been placed within each and every one of us. There’s something for every taste here at Warehouse 32 – even those who want to stick to the old-school meat and potatoes. Warehouse 32 offers Western fusion dishes with separate menu for Brunch and Dinner. Diners can order using their special QR code platform from the convenience of their table. The space also Sabahan born and head chef of Warehouse 32, Chef Roland leads caters for private events and large groups up to 70 persons at a a small team in his kitchen. With more than 9 years experience, time; while buffet menu is available for 35 persons and above. he began his career and learned the trade with a few reputable resorts in Kota Kinabalu. He explains of their popular 16-hour smoked beef brisket, which is a mixture of hickory, Applewood and mangrove, the smoked beef brisket is moist, smoky, luscious and fork tender, making it the star of W32’s menu. Oh Carbonara, how I love thee. W32’s signature Carbonara alla spaghetti is served with generous slices of beef bacon & finally topped with a torched yolk. The smoky taste of the pasta drenched in an egg and cream based sauce studded with beef bacon and torched egg yolk is indulgent and rich, leaving you wanting for more. The next plate of dish completely blew me away - Inch Thick Lamb Chop. Yes, unlike many other outlets around Kota Kinabalu, Warehouse 32 serves diners with a whole inch thick lamb shoulder times 2! Humongous as it is, the lamb is marinated and glazed with Chef ’s signature barbeque sauce and served with apple mint sauce. The meat is cooked medium to well-done (diner can also choose how it is done) and makes one want to eat it nonstop. I loved it.
While we savoured what was presented to us, beverages were served two at a time. The Strawberry Milk made from freshly blended strawberries, milk and honey; while the Iced Premium Matcha also served with milk was creamy and rich. W32 like many others serves alcoholic beverages and cocktails – and Kazaf presented us with two of their popular cocktails. The Tae Yang is a mix of whisky and Yuzu concentrate – on the sweeter side, this citrus drink pairs well with the more meaty dishes like the Supreme Leader and Lamb Chop. Drunken Chocolate on the other hand, while looks may be deceiving – you might think it’s a mocha drink as it is served in a regular coffee cup, is made from premium Bellagio chocolate and paired with dark rum,
