LKWP staff organising the donated eggs. 9 May 2020 - A donation program collaboration between Breeze Magazine and Sabah Environment Action Group (SEAG) to benefit the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (LKWP) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals KK (SPCA KK) was held on this day. Breeze and SEAG were able to get a donation of culled and aged Eggs from the DESA Bongawan farm. SEAG working together with Breeze Magazine ensured DESA that the donation of these eggs would not only assist in the feeding of the animals at LKWP but it would also reduce their volume of wastage that would normally go into the trash. A total of 521 trays of eggs were delivered to LKWP to be used to feed the various animals there. When LKWP received the donation of eggs from DESA, they were concerned that the huge volume may not be consumed by the animals in time before they expired so SEAG proceeded to identify the SPCA KK to share in some of the eggs for their feeding program.

benefit another. In this case, two parties benefitted. The LKWP & SPCA KK. SEAG Chairman, Mohammad Iskandar said “it is a normal practice in most developed countries to identify partnerships such as this, where one man’s waste is another man’s treasure”. “SPCA KK is very grateful to Encik Mohammad Iskandar and SEAG for helping to feed our shelter animals especially in challenging times like this,” said Dr Stuart Chin, SPCA KK President. Breeze would like to continue to build this ‘waste exchange system’ with their other clients and partners to build a strong community that helps each other. Anyone who needs assistance from Breeze or SEAG to get involved in this ‘waste exchange database’ can contact either party through their social media platforms or contact the Breeze administration office.

SEAG & Breeze will continue to explore joint programs such as this in reducing the potential waste stream from one party to

a new norm L

ife as we once knew is a bit different now. Since the recent Covid-19 outbreak, everyone had to change their daily routine to prevent the deadly virus from spreading. These changes have affected us from the simplest task like personal hygiene to a more complex one such as renewing your road tax. The life as we know it now is called the New Norm.

Social Distancing We’ve heard this phrase often being used since the pandemic started, but do we know what it actually means though? Social distance is to distance ourselves from those around us at least 1 meter away. That means wherever we stand or sit, we have to maintain a 1 meter distance between ourselves and the people around us. This applies when we’re shopping for essentials, queueing up to enter an establishment, and also when dining in restaurants.

Limiting Physical Contact Although we are used to greeting with the typical handshakes, high fives or even hugs, but get ready to replace it with bowing our heads or simply waving our hands instead. This does not limit to only human interactions but also with ourselves and the objects around us. Refrain from touching your face and avoid touching public objects like railings or open counters. Then, what about paying for your purchases? Try out contactless payment methods such as e-wallets or the PayWave function on your cards. These are just some things we can do to limit physical contact with our surroundings.

The Importance Of Face Masks We understand that face masks can be humid, uncomfortable and annoying at times. Even our leaders say it isn’t compulsory to wear them in public. However, the virus is very unpredictable. Some people are asymptomatic, meaning they don’t show any symptoms, yet are unknowingly carrying the virus with them at all times. Hence, wearing face masks to wherever and whenever we expect to meet people can be a good practice. It doesn’t only protect the wearer, but also the people around them. Therefore, it’s a good precaution to wear face masks to prevent the spread of the virus.

Handy Hand Sanitizers Although we should limit physical contact with the world around us, there are some things we just can’t avoid touching. Groceries, door handles, and elevator buttons are the types of objects we can’t avoid to be in contact with. This is where hand sanitizers come into the rescue. Sanitizing your hands ensures they are kept clean wherever you may be. Just make sure to use legit hand sanitizers, not those DIY ones some people are selling.

Different Hygiene Pattern It goes to show that personal hygiene should be taken very seriously now. Washing your hands regularly is somewhat normal even pre-pandemic but now, even your shower routine has to change. Everytime you come back from any public place, you are required to shower to avoid spreading possible viruses around your house. You never know what kinds of germs actually stick to your skin and clothes. Although it’s troublesome, you can never be too safe when it comes to the safety of you and those around you.

Temperature Check & Filling up Forms Before, we could just walk into any store with glee but now walking into one means filling up your details onto a logbook or scanning a QR code that links to an online form. This is a part of the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) initiative to ensure safe movement during this crisis. In the event of positive cases, it will be easier to track travel history and notify others that might have been in close contact with the infected individual.

Restricted Travel Gone are those days when we used to plan for every holiday chance we got. With international travel and interstate travel restrictions being enforced indefinitely, planning trips these days have proven to be even harder. This is to prevent possible and further spread of the virus. If you still have that itch to visit and relax at cool places, why not visit your local state tourist attractions? Just make sure to consider the bans, observe the Standard Operating Procedures, and more importantly, health risks that come along with your travel plans.

Malaysian Red Crescent Kota Kinabalu City

D

uring this pandemic, many communities have suffered setbacks to provide basic necessities for their households. The Movement Control Order (MCO), although helpful and necessary, has unfortunately caused individuals and breadwinners to lose their jobs. However, help has always been there for them. The Malaysian Red Crescent Kota Kinabalu City (MRCKK) has been working tirelessly to ensure that those affected can breathe a sigh of relief during these uncertain times. The Malaysian Red Crescent is under the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies, a worldwide non-profit organization dedicated to humanitarian acts and services. MRCKK covers the whole Kota Kinabalu area, which is just one of the many branches located around the country. It’s run by a group of volunteers led by Remy Martin Gunsalam, the current chairman of MRCKK. During the MCO, the organization has successfully donated basic necessities to those affected by the MCO. Their food aid, called Bantuan Prihatin, has been done in phases. Dry goods such as rice, coffee, salt, sugar, and many more were donated by concerned members of the public and local private companies. The items were donated to more than 243 families around the KK area.

10

MRCKK’s efforts were also focused on helping out frontliners. In conjunction with the World Red Crescent Day which fell on 8 May, the volunteers organised a Bubur Lambuk Program. The aim of the program was to thank and honor the frontliners’ sacrifices by serving them Bubur Lambuk, a type of local porridge. 500 containers of porridge were served to members of the police, RELA, army, and also firemen. It doesn’t stop there too, since BTC is the official caterer of the health ministry in Sabah, MRCKK volunteers have been delivering food from them to quarantine centres and hospitals.

We’ve all heard and noticed that frontliners working in hospitals have had a shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for them to do their work safely. To combat this, MRCKK volunteers have worked together with the community to make and donate PPEs for frontliners. This effort successfully contributed to over 5000 face shields, 350 pairs of boot covers, and 55 aprons being made and donated. Blood donation drives were also organised so that other patients with blood disorders such as Anemia and Thalassemia aren’t set aside. The donation drives were held at their headquarters and the KK Fire Department. One pint of blood can save 3 lives, so the 128 pints they’ve successfully collected can potentially save 384 lives. The main difference between now and then is the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that the organisation has to follow as guidelines. The safety of the volunteers is the first priority

for MRCKK. Face masks and social distancing are important, especially in the headquarters. Among other things, they’ve wrapped equipment in plastic to ease the sanitizing process, while also putting up signs and posters of the SOPs that people should follow. They also take the extra effort of decontaminating and sanitizing the vehicles immediately after each use. “Of course the safety and wellness of our volunteers is important,” said Remy. “But, this goes for everyone and not just our volunteers, even though we are advised to stay at home, we can still do something extra for our community depending on the situation. Funding, donations, and even positive remarks are all valuable for the moral support of our volunteers,” he added. Remy is very appreciative to everyone who not only sent their donations in, but also lent their time and energy. “MRCKK volunteers aren’t the only ones preparing the PPEs. We’ve had members of the public helping us out as well,” he said. Two MRCKK volunteers also provided their thoughts. Auriel and Angelica both agree that the biggest challenge is to convince the public that it is safe to visit their headquarters for blood donations. Auriel said, “Many people are still a bit skeptical that our facility and equipment are safe to use. The challenge is to convince and educate the public that we take great precaution when it comes to their safety.” “Although we believe staying home is important, someone has to look after those in need. We need to assist the government and help our community the best we can, without discriminating against anyone,” added Angelica. MRCKK is on a continuous effort to look after those in need. They have planned more food aids and blood donation drives in the future. If you feel you can help in any way, please do contact them for more information. Let’s all stand together and support all the effort made by MRCKK.

LAR AS DARI R ASIAN PAYS HOMAGE TO SUPPORTER ON LATEST SINGLE WUHU Hailing from different parts of Kota Kinabalu, Laras Dari Rasian brings us mellow tunes to ease our troubled minds with their latest single, WUHU. A song with a perfect blend of contemporary beats and a spice of Nusantara elements into the rhythm that keeps our feet tapping and body swaying. Like many of their songs, Laras writes their lyrics with symbolic notions to convey messages to their listener. For WUHU, it serves as a reminder that no matter how hard life has hit you, take a moment to heal and don’t give up easily because life is a journey worth enjoying, not only the good times but the bad ones too. This happened to the band when their initial plans for the WUHU music video were canceled due to the Movement Control Order (MCO). They persevered and took this opportunity to create a music video that bridges a way to pay homage to their families, musician friends and other loyal supporters of their music. As of now, they’ve released a new EP “Kausa Dan Terminasi”. You can tap your feet to the WUHU music video and their other works on KajiBunyi YouTube Channel. KajiBunyi

JONATHAN TSE RELEASED NEW SINGLE HALO-HALO FT ATREZ If you’re looking for a melodic tune to get your groove on, you should listen to Jonathan Tse’s latest single called Halo-Halo featuring a Singaporean rapper, Atrez. Jonathan’s catchy pop acoustic style and Atrez’s mad rap gives Halo-Halo a dynamically wholesome feel to it. Jonathan’s lyrics narrate a story of his father’s advice with his own personal experiences and the choices we make in life. Funnily, Halo-Halo is actually based on a Filipino dessert which is similar to our “Ais Batu Campur” here. Just like this colorful dessert, Jonathan quotes “You’ll never know how it tastes until you try it and looks don’t define the taste.” Halo-Halo was produced some time ago when Atrez visited the studio in Kota Kinabalu. Despite the MCO, digital technology makes everything possible to produce good quality music without having everyone at the studio. The mix and master was done by Felix Voon and the lyric video was done by Haq. Now, Jonathan plans to release a new song every month. Halo-Halo is currently available on all streaming platforms. The lyric video and other works are available on his Youtube Channel, “Jonathan Tse”. @jonathantse

ophelia domingo | devyne | jazel chiew Bake it til you make it

W

e started the year 2020 on a sour note with the pandemic spread and we were forced to hibernate from physical activities. Gradually, we all began to miss our pre-pandemic life and is in need of something sweet. We can see those tempting desserts flooding our Facebook feed, making us drool and even making a lot of people become their own version of Cake Boss. It’s a phenomenon in itself. Meet Ophelia, Devyne and Jazel. Three lovely ladies who made baking as their passion and hope their experience and perspective in home baking can help future home bakers to kick start their home baking journey.

Ophelia Domingo, Audiologist | Owner of Tipsy Tiramisu Ophelia first started baking with her grandmother who used to bake a lot. However, for a person like Ophelia, she prefers cold dessert and naturally she bakes what she likes, which in this case, is Tiramisu. Being a risk-taker, she began the Tipsy Tiramisu’s journey back in December 2019 with a twist of alcohol to Tiramisu. Juggling roles as a wife and an audiologist by day prove to be challenging but since MCO, she has more time to fulfil orders and also make face shields for frontliners. Her real challenges during the pandemic were obtaining ingredients and container shortage. With Savoiardi being the core ingredient of Tipsy Tiramisu and largely imported from Italy, Ophelia took quick action to hoard all available Saviordi in Kota Kinabalu prior to the MCO. What she did not predict was the surge of orders that came which resulted in container shortage. Worriedly, she tried ordering online but delivery took too much time. Luckily, she found one good supplier in Bundusan. She understands during these hard times, people are looking for financial stability to cope with the pandemic. However, she wanted to remind future home bakers to be different from others, do something where the demand is there and do something creative and crazy. When asked if she would continue this business post-pandemic, she stated yes if there is demand. Tipsy Tiramisu is open for orders on Facebook and Instagram.

Devyne Koh, SSTC Adminitrative Manager | Home Baker Growing up following her mum to baking classes, Devyne’s baking endeavours began as a hobby and eventually experimental through cookbooks, TV shows and videos from various well known chefs online. For her, it is a form of self expression and a therapeutic outlet. With more time on her hands during MCO, she focused on further improving her baking skills. One of her latest trials is the Portugese Egg Tart which is currently popular amongst friends and family. However, she felt the hot and humid Asian kitchen is not exactly ideal as some ingredients can be highly sensitive to heat and to top that, she finds most baking essential shops don’t carry a wider variety of ingredients in terms of selection and/or brands. For Devyne, baking and cooking is a method of forging friendships over meals and an opportunity to explore other people’s different cultural backgrounds. She is still deciding whether to turn her home baking hobby into a business as it can be exciting but challenging as well. Devyne is currently testing new cakes and pastries in her kitchen and if there is any update, she will surely announce it on her Instagram. @devyne

Jazel Chiew, Outbound Tour Guide | Owner of Gram A happy-go-lucky cyclist, Jazel Chiew who has been baking for a year, made home baking as her passion to create beautiful yet rustic feel desserts like her bestselling Banana Cream Cheese Loaf Cake, Coconut Pound Cake, Pandan Chiffon Cake, Apple Pie and many more. All of this, she learned from baking shows combined with her past working experience in the cold kitchen. At first, she preferred hot foods over baking because of measurements and messy aftermath until one of her attempts prevailed and thereon, the passion grew. For Jazel, the challenges before MCO were approaching cafes to sell her desserts, compared to during the MCO, where the challenges were to get supplies. With social distancing, long queues at the baker’s suppliers are inevitable and she fears of contracting the virus. Despite adversities, Jazel felt blessed with orders still coming in, especially her Ham Jim Piang (Chinese Cinnamon Rolls), Banana Loaf Cake and Pandan Cake. With more time at home, she was able to learn new recipes, although it is tiresome but when you love something, it is never a waste of time. She is hopeful for future home bakeries and believes everyone can bake, you just need to be patient and make your own style of desserts. Find out Jazel’s variety of baked goods on her Facebook and Instagram! @jazelchiew 17

The New Norm For The Environment

T

he lockdown is dying down, people the effect of the pandemic can be world. They call it the “New Norm”, a about with our lives. The question I want impact does this new norm have on

are going out, and felt all around the new way of going to ask you is: what our environment?

Of course, we should expect the air around us to return to its “pre-lockdown” state. Workers are driving to work, extroverts stretching their legs, and cats satisfying their curiosities with the new world around them. At this rate, traffic will continue to increase and the air pollution level will be right where we left it before the lockdown started. Is this a surprise? You can answer that for yourself. One thing’s for sure, it is inevitable. Another issue I’m foreseeing is the presence of a new type of waste being littered around. We’re advised to wear face masks to keep us safe from the virus. Although it still isn’t widespread, I have seen a few face masks being littered here and there. Just like cigarette butts, these will be everywhere if we aren’t mindful. You’d have to wonder what would happen to the filtered germs stuck on those masks. Some people take extra precaution for essentials. I’ve seen some people the latex kind or the plastic ones. I see gloves lying next to face masks

when going outside wearing gloves, either won’t be surprised to on the ground either.

Then, there are hand sanitizers. The many bottles we’ll expect to see littered away carelessly are the least of our problems.

by Noel Jinguli Images | Unsplash & Freepik 18

Sanitizer gel and liquid are being washed away into our waterways & they pose a threat to the aquatic ecosystem. Results of a research by Rolf Halden shows that hand sanitizers and antibacterial soaps contribute to water contamination. It’s understandable our hygiene is important, unfortunately, we’re unknowingly polluting our waters as well. Look, this article isn’t meant to be a pessimistic piece or intended to cause a stir. We can still avoid these problems if we’re careful. To combat air pollution, why not carpool? Or better yet, I think working from home is another step to reduce our carbon footprint. Throw away used face masks and gloves properly. It isn’t only an eyesore, but is also a biohazard to all of us. I can’t advise using reusable face masks because they aren’t as protective as surgical masks, but you can try using reusable gloves though. Lastly, always remind ourselves that our actions do have consequences, even if they aren’t always immediate.

Reentry: Readapting through and from MCO

S

elamat Hari Raya 2020 to all our Muslim friends, hope you had a blessed fasting month and a beautiful Syawal! As the Conditional Movement Control Order is now in place, and we are gradually reverting back to work, albeit in new ways, there has been some interesting things Cruz and I have noticed, and appreciated. After almost 70 days, we finally went outdoors, and I had a reminder of what I took for granted, the beauty of nature, the healing force of the environment, and the deep calmness of the sea. Do take this time as a change to see things new again, and to appreciate what we have all around. Give it the full attention of what you can see, hear, feel, and smell! The MCO also had us spend a lot of time with our families, and as much as we love them, I am sure some of us had challenges by Dr. Sivakumar Kumaresan Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Universiti Malaysia Sabah Sabah’s First NLP Trainer at UMS Investment Holdings Sdn. and conflicts, due to the close quarters and stress. Honestly, I’d like to think that part of being in a healthy relationship is getting to know each other better, and finding ways that we can live together better. So the time you had together including the conflicts, probably also helped you appreciate those close to you and for those who were separated, to miss them and connect to them in other ways. Lastly, we all had to figure out better ways to work, as well as redefine business. Both Cruz and I found that we had to switch our business model and deliver our services online, fitness and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) training, which traditionally were done face to face. It took some creativity and adaptation to make the new offerings as valuable and attractive to our clients. Right now the lesson I get from MCO is to keep paying attention, and adapting, while keeping a clear intention forward. What did you learn during MCO that makes you thrive now? Till we chat next time, we’d like to wish you much success and joy in the month ahead! Dr. Siva and Coachy Cruz are available for online coaching in NLP for Performance Coaching and Wellness or Fitness, respectively. WHY TUMOR MARKERS ARE IMPORTANT

T

umor markers are substances found in higher-than-normal levels in the blood, urine, or tissues of some people with cancer. Tumor markers have assumed an increasingly important role in the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of some types of cancer. Tumor markers can be used for several purposes: • Screening a healthy population or a high-risk population for the presence of cancer • Making an early diagnosis of a specific type of cancer • Determining the prognosis for a patient • Monitoring a patient in remission or while having surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. How is a tumor marker test done? A member of your health care team will take a sample of your blood or urine. The sample goes to a laboratory for testing. Some tests must be done more than once, because the levels of tumor markers can change regularly. You will also need other tests to find cancer and check on treatment. This is because tumor marker results have limitations and are sometimes wrong. They might: 1. Show a tumor is present or growing when it is not. 2. Show there is no tumor when one is present, or show treatment is working when it is not.

Although tumor markers are usually imperfect as screening tests for detection of occult (hidden) cancers, once a particular tumor has been found using a marker, the marker may be a way of monitoring the success (or failure) of treatment. The tumor marker level may also reflect the extent (the stage) of the disease, indicating how quickly the cancer is likely to progress and helping to determine the prognosis (outlook). Rising levels on test results can be, but are not always worrisome. Although changes in tumor marker levels may be cause for alarm, other non-cancerous diseases can cause test results to vary. Conditions in the lab that processes tests may also alter the results. Patients should always talk to their oncologist about their test results and keep asking questions until they understand how these results will impact their prognosis and treatment plan.

by Dr Katalina Katalina Aesthetic & Wellness

No test is perfect. So your doctor will probably order several types of tests to find answers. Examples of common tumor markers: 1. Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) - For Liver Cancer 2. Beta-2-Microglobulin (B2M) - For multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and some lymphomas 3. Bladder Tumor Antigen (BTA) - For Bladder Cancer 4. CA 15-3 - For Breast Cancer 5. CA 125 - For Ovarian Cancer 6. CA 19-9 - For Pancreatic Cancer 7. CEA - For Colorectal Cancer 8. PSA - For Prostate What are the potential advantages of using tumor markers? Early detection • Providing more information about the disease to allow for tailored treatments to be used, resulting in improved efficacy and survival • Avoiding side effects from having unnecessary treatments • Offering less invasive diagnostics

fter more than 2 months of staying at home, we are now slowly being released back into the world! This workout combo will help you build a strong core as well as train your cardiovascular fitness which would come in handy when you need to stand your ground or dash away when people come within your 1 metre safe zone radius. This calorie burning workout is also designed for fat gain distancing; the more you do it, the more you can distance yourself away from unwanted calories.

SETUP • Come to a quadruped position (both palms and feet on the floor with knee hanging about an inch away from the floor) • Keep a neutral spine & brace the core. EXECUTION • Keeping one foot on the ground, rotate from your hips, release the palm on the same side as the grounded foot and thread the opposite foot through. • Return back to original position then repeat on the other side.

RANTS & RAVES

KEEPING FIT AND HEALTHY DURING THE PANDEMIC

S

elamat Hari Raya everybody! I’m sure that this is a hard time for everyone since it is supposed to be a festive season. Not many people are able to return to their hometowns this year due to the Coronavirus. It has been awhile since our CMCO started and we are nearing the end of it. By the 9th of June we will all know if we get to go back to normal, or get another Uno plus two cards! Many of us are dreading the fact that there is a possibility that we will be continuing with the CMCO. We don’t know if cases will drop or rise. But I hope everyone is still staying safe during this time! Ever since the start of our lockdown, I noticed that almost everybody is trying to keep fit or even taking this opportunity to glow up! Many fitness YouTubers are gaining more viewers each day because so many people are using this time to work on themselves. Many have commented below videos saying that before all of this, they had every excuse not to workout. But now that they are stuck at home, there are no more excuses! Of course everybody wants a quick way to slim down and are turning to videos that guarantee abs in a month or even 2 weeks! So I wonder, have any of you started working out? Is it working?

by Cherelle Lim Images | Pexels 24

Many have seen results within a few weeks while others don’t even after a month. That just goes to show that every body is different. You might not see the same results as someone else. Diet is also key when keeping fit. I know that some people will just do workouts, but completely miss out on their diet! For some people, that might just be what works for them but, I highly doubt that you would be able to get abs in a few weeks without maintaining a healthy diet. It is said that your diet is probably 80 percent of a healthy lifestyle and the workout is only 20 percent! So I don’t know about you, but I would start following a healthy diet plan if I were you. Anyway, it isn’t important if you have abs or not. What matters is that you are healthy!

tiktok: the internet titan

T

ikTok. It’s everywhere. On our Facebook feed, Instagram stories and even a compilation of it on YouTube. The chances are even your neighbour has one on their phone. No matter how cringeworthy it seems at first, you can’t ignore the hype of it all. Then, the next thing you know, you ended up downloading it, just to see what was the hype all about and sooner or later, you’ll be the next person practicing your best “Say So” dance. The social media itself is dominating the internet scene with over 800 million active users globally and has surpassed the one billion mark for the most downloaded app both in Google Play and Apps Store worldwide with 1.5 billion downloads in 2019. Beating other behemoths like Instagram, Facebook and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). So, who is behind this internet titan? The creator of TikTok, ByteDance is a Chinese company based in Beijing, founded by Zhang Yiming in 2012, a former Microsoft software engineer. Yiming’s vision was ahead of his time. His vision was to create an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered app that can track user’s habits. However, like many success stories, it was rejected at first until a venture capitalist agreed to fund his vision and created their first news app called Toutiau. TikTok empire began in China back in 2014 as an app that users can create and share short-form videos of themselves. This teen centric app then began its international debut in 2017 and bought it’s relatively similar competition, Musical.ly for 800 million USD.

By merging TikTok with the already popular app in the U.S, ByteDance gained a substantial user base in the country. What makes TikTok so good but can’t be resisted? TikTok itself is like eating popcorn. The first 15 seconds video serves entertainment that is so good but short lived. So you keep scrolling to the next video one after another. It gives out such a euphoric experience that you just don’t want it to end. This is thanks to Yiming’s vision of using AI targeting that serves content based on a user’s liking. Even celebrities decided to jump onto the bandwagon to further fuel TikTok’s popularity. Pop artists like Justin Bieber, rap singer Cardi B, YouTube star David Dobrik and even the Prince of Bel Air legend, Will Smith are on TikTok. Who wouldn’t want to be on TikTok to watch their favourite celeb making daily videos of themselves? To some, watching their favourite celebrities on TikTok, TikTok humanizes their icon, thus, making TikTok even more addictive. Now, Yiming’s vision is taking the world by storm.
