THE SWEET & SAVORY STORY OF C&F AND HARI HARI SNACKS

It all began in 1977 when Mr. Chan Heng Kok, along with his partner Mr. Foo, embarked on a journey to create snacks that would win over Malaysian hearts. With little experience in the snack industry, Mr. Chan pressed forward with a vision to bring new flavors to life. His dedication was evident in his words to his team, a mantra that lives on: never give up, work hard, and focus on the details. This philosophy, rooted in perseverance and passion, shaped the culture of C&F, transforming a modest idea into the iconic Hari Hari snack brand.

Starting with simple, beloved treats like popcorn, corn extrusions, and flour-based snacks, Mr. Chan gave his products a name that carried a message. “Hari Hari” means “daily” in Malay, reflecting the vision of a snack people could enjoy every day. Little did he know, these treats would become cherished “childhood snacks” for many Malaysians, especially in East Malaysia. Today, Hari Hari is a household name, evoking a sense of nostalgia while keeping pace with modern snacking trends.

Expanding Operations and Embracing Technology

In line with the company’s growth, C&F now operates from a sprawling 5.0-acre factory equipped with state-of-the-art automated production systems. The investment has been

tremendous, from upgrading machines to enhancing the work environment for staff safety and comfort. This commitment ensures that every Hari Hari snack reaching the shelves meets the high standards of quality, consistency, and reliability that customers expect.

With a belief that excellence in business begins with a dedicated team, C&F has hired young food science graduates, fostering a space where knowledge and experience blend seamlessly. The team’s fresh ideas, combined with the wisdom of seasoned employees, pave the way for ongoing innovation and growth in the snack market.

A Flavorful Legacy

The very first flavor from Hari Hari was the classic Chicken Cracker, a humble yet delightful snack that sparked the brand’s journey. In 2020, the introduction of the Cuttlefish Stick—a snack wrapped in transparent packaging and sealed with, believe it or not, candles—marked another milestone. These foundational flavors helped establish Hari Hari as a trusted name, beloved by snack lovers across East and West Malaysia.

Today, Hari Hari snacks are enjoyed far and wide, with recent expansions into export markets boosting overseas business to 50% of the company’s output. Every day, the factory produces an impressive 17,240 kilograms of snacks, including 2,880 kilograms of potato-based treats, ensuring that every craving can be satisfied.

The Art of Creating New Flavors

Developing a new flavor at Hari Hari is an art that requires both creativity and precision. It starts with brainstorming and gathering inspiration from trends, flavors, and ideas that resonate with consumers. After identifying potential flavor profiles, the team moves to sourcing high-quality ingredients, followed by extensive sensory testing to ensure each snack delights in taste, texture, and appeal.

The final stage is a meticulous cost analysis, which determines the feasibility of bringing a new flavor to market. This process is key to ensuring that every new product aligns with the brand’s commitment to quality and value. It’s a collaborative journey, with each department playing a role in bringing bold new flavors to life.

Introducing: The Go Bites V Cut Korean Series

The latest flavor to hit the shelves is the Go Bites V Cut (Potato Chips) Korean Series, a true reflection of C&F’s commitment to pushing boundaries. Created by a passionate R&D team composed of local food science graduates, this new snack

Logo Revamp Old (top) to New (bottom)

embodies the slogan, “The New Generation Choice, Opt for the Unusual!” It’s a flavor experience designed for snackers who want to try something completely unique, making it the first of its kind worldwide.

A Moving Mural

To promote the Go Bites V Cut, C&F took an artistic approach by transforming one of their delivery trucks into a mobile masterpiece. The truck’s mural is a vibrant tribute to the new Korean flavor, designed to catch eyes and spark curiosity wherever it goes. By partnering with a talented local mural artist from Sabah, C&F not only highlighted its innovative product but also celebrated the creativity and cultural richness of the local community. This initiative bridges the gap between art and snacking, making the Go Bites truck a symbol of flavor and artistry on wheels.

Hari Hari’s Most Beloved Snacks

Among the most popular snacks in the Hari Hari lineup are the Mega Prawn, Coco Delite, and the crowd-pleasing Go Bites Potato Chips range. Each of these products reflects the brand’s dedication to crafting quality snacks that deliver on flavor, variety, and satisfaction. While snacks are the sole focus of C&F, this specialization allows the company to channel all its efforts into perfecting and innovating within the snack industry, maintaining its place as a leading name in Malaysian snacking.

The Future of Hari Hari

Looking ahead, C&F has plans to expand its manufacturing operations to West Malaysia, allowing the brand to reach even more consumers. This expansion aligns with the company’s vision to grow while staying true to its roots, honoring Mr. Chan’s legacy of perseverance, hard work, and attention to detail. Currently employing 117 people, C&F remains dedicated to fostering a positive work environment where team members feel valued and empowered.

Hari Hari’s journey from a small, hopeful snack venture to a beloved Malaysian brand is a story of passion, resilience, and the joy of sharing delicious moments. With every new flavor and every crunchy bite, Hari Hari continues to make snack time a cherished part of daily life in Malaysia and beyond.

MUSIC

From the land below the wind emerges a duo making their debut to deliver renditions in the language of their mother tongue. Introducing The J2, pronounced as Jsquare, a band hailing from Sabah who aims to add a brand new vibe to the local music scene with the Dusun language. The band consists of two members, Jon James and Joshua Peter, hence the name Jsquare. There’s no deeper meaning to it than that, just vibes.

Jsquare makes a combination of pop, R&B, and lofi songs, with some interest in trying out pop rock or alternative rock. They go for melodies that sound pleasant—something that people can vibe to. If there’s anything that catches their attention as an idea for a song, that will be the foundation for their song. With each different genre in their songs, they aim to share their love for music in the Dusun language and build a bridge for that language with contemporary music.

Both Jon and Joshua started making music around 3 years ago individually. Their mutual passion for music made them team up together to form The Jsquare. Joshua grew up around music because of his father, who is in an alternative rock band. While he was following in the footsteps of his father, his love for music surpassed rock as he kept venturing into other genres. On the other hand, Jon always participates in choirs for his school and church. That sparked a flame in him for music. As both of them journeyed down these paths, they both decided to start producing music in their own style. Ed Sheeran is one of Jon’s biggest reasons why he wants to become a singer and songwriter, as is the case for Joshua with Kurt Cobain. A fateful encounter with each other, thus forming the JSquare.

While their current target audiences are those in Sabah, the duo hoped to gain a wider target audience to showcase their ethnicity to the whole wide world. To achieve that, it all comes down to discipline and the efforts needed to make this happen. This is where their unending love for music comes in—a drive to keep them going forward. More singles, and maybe even an album, will be released when they deem the time to be right. One thing is for sure: a song is currently in the making. It will be a mixture of rock and pop that sings about living life and having a good time with friends.

You can stream their latest song “Iziau Iti”, which means “It’s you” in the Dusun language, on Youtube!

Apple has once again unveiled a new version of their smartphone, iPhone 16. Alongside that, the announcement also includes the new AirPods 4 and the Apple Watch Series 10. But we’ll focus more on what the new iPhone 16 has to offer.

Let’s start with how it performs overall. With its new A18 chip, which has a 16-core neural engine—double the power of the A16 Bionic’s neural engine—Apple is responding to the need for a powerful chip to extend its usage towards AI workloads. With an increased RAM processing power of 17%, the iPhone 16 marketed itself as being 30% faster than its predecessor, with usage partially for the AI. Despite the increase in its power, the CPU is engineered to also be efficient so as to have a longer battery life than before. Gamers can look forward to their new cooling system that prevents the device from reaching a high temperature during long gaming sessions.

The new Action Button, which debuted with the iPhone 15 Pro, is also included in the iPhone 16. This programmable button can serve different purposes depending on the needs of the user. Additionally, Apple also added a button specifically for the camera function that will instantly open the camera and can work as a hardware shutter. While it is technically a button, it functions more as a haptic sensor than a button.

While you really can take a quick photo with a press of it, you can also change the camera settings due to how sensitive it is. With that, the quality of the camera has also been improved. Along with an Ultrawide lens that can capture up to 2.6 times more light, the iPhone 16 now features a 48MP primary sensor. You can even take pictures and connect to the internet to search for more information on the picture you took by pointing the camera at something and using the new camera button to

search. In addition to their 48MP quality on their camera and their ultrawide lens, Apple also included a 5x Telephoto lens, which will significantly enhance the quality of any images you need to zoom in on.

Whether the upgrade to this new iPhone is worth it or not is up to the consumer. While the device does offer a number of upgrades, especially their usage towards AI for the sake of convenience, it’s quite hard to justify the switch due to how its predecessor still holds up well today. The upgrade will feel barely noticeable, especially if you’re upgrading from 15 Pro. The upgrade is only worth it if your iPhone is a few years behind in production or if it’s barely hanging on. Whether it’s worth it to start switching from Android to iOS is a whole different story.

AUTOMOTIVE

BUYING A USED CAR: THE PERFECT STARTING POINT FOR CAR MODIFICATIONS IN MALAYSIA

Buying a used car can offer fantastic value, and for car enthusiasts, it presents a golden opportunity for customization. Not only do you save money by avoiding the steep depreciation of a new vehicle, but you can also use those savings to upgrade and personalise your ride. In Malaysia, however, modifying your car isn’t just a matter of taste—it’s important to stay within the law to avoid fines and potential complications with the authorities.

Here’s how buying a used car and modifications can be a perfect match, along with what you need to know about Malaysian modification laws.

Affordability and Flexibility

One of the main reasons people buy used cars is to save money. Since new cars can lose up to 20% of their value within the first year, opting for a used model lets you sidestep this loss while still getting a reliable vehicle. With those savings, you have extra cash to invest in modifications—whether that’s upgrading the sound system, enhancing performance, or giving the car a more stylish look with custom wheels or a body kit.

The beauty of modifying a used car is the flexibility it offers. You’re not as concerned about depreciation, and you don’t have to worry about voiding a manufacturer’s warranty, which can be a risk with new cars. Plus, if you choose wisely, some modifications can even increase the resale value of your used car.

Key Modifications and Malaysian Law

However, while modifying your car is exciting, it’s essential to know that Malaysia has specific laws regarding vehicle alterations. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) regulates modifications to ensure that they are safe and comply with national standards. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

• Engine Modifications: Engine swaps or adding performance parts like a turbocharger must be approved by JPJ. For engine capacity increases, the new engine should not exceed 25% of the original engine’s capacity. Your car will also need to pass a Puspakom inspection.

• Exhaust Systems: Modifying your exhaust system is allowed, but it must not exceed 90 dB. Loud or non-compliant exhaust systems can lead to fines or even impoundment.

• Body Kits and Cosmetic Changes: Modifications like spoilers or wide body kits are legal, but they must not alter the car’s structural integrity or create sharp edges that could pose safety risks.

• Lighting: Installing aftermarket lights, such as HID or LED headlights, is allowed, but they must remain within the legal color limits (white or yellow) and brightness standards.

• Window Tints: You’re allowed to tint your windows, but make sure the tint complies with the following Visible Light

• Transmission (VLT) rules: 70% for the front windshield, 50% for the driver and front passenger windows, and no restrictions for the rear windows.

Buying a used car is not only a cost-effective option but also a gateway to creative freedom when it comes to modifications. Just remember, before you dive into upgrades, ensure your modifications align with Malaysian regulations. By doing so, you can enjoy a customized ride without the stress of fines or legal issues.

PERSONALITY

C&F ENTERPRISE: THE FAMILY THAT BRINGS JOY THROUGH SNACKS

In the snack world, Hari Hari stands out thanks to the dedicated team at C&F Enterprise! Led by Mrs. Julia Chan with Nicole, Chan Kheng Khoon, and Jackie, they’ve transformed snacking with tradition and love. This family-run business ensures every bite is delicious and heartfelt. From boardroom laughs to creating new flavors, they make snacking a joyful experience.

Makeover & Hair Styling | Razak Sindu Studio & Image | Chris Pereira

Ngui Choon Moi, known to most as Julia or Mrs. Chan, hails from Sandakan and holds the role of Non-Executive Chairman at C&F Enterprise. A key figure in the company for an incredible 49 years, Julia has been instrumental in C&F’s journey from its early stages to the flourishing business it is today. Her connection to the company started shortly after she left her first job at Malaysian Industrial Development Finance, where a workplace fire incident prompted her to explore a new path. Not long after, she met the late Mr. Chan, and together they began building C&F from the ground up, officially establishing the company in 1977.

Originally, Julia took on various roles within the company, from handling administration to assisting with customer service while Mr. Chan managed sales. Nowadays, her role has shifted to advisory, reviewing reports, participating in key meetings, and offering strategic insights. Though decision-making largely rests with the company’s directors—her children—Julia’s guidance remains invaluable.

Reflecting on the journey, Julia recalls both challenges and triumphs. The 1986 economic downturn tested the company’s resilience, but the 2001 decision to relocate the factory to KKIP Sepanggar was a turning point that streamlined operations. Through these experiences, Julia has cultivated a resilient mindset, growing from her initially soft-spoken nature into a strong-willed and business-savvy leader.

Outside of work, she leads an active life—early morning workouts, reading business books, and practicing Chinese calligraphy keep her engaged. Julia sees a bright future for C&F and hopes the team continues to work with unity, believing that the strong sense of family within the company is essential to its ongoing success.

Chan Kheng Khoon, born and raised in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, is the Managing Director of C&F Enterprise Sdn Bhd and its subsidiaries. Armed with a Bachelor of Communication and Information Technology from Perth, Chan began his career in Kuala Lumpur, working as a service engineer with a humble salary of RM800. His journey took him through various roles in IT system integration before he joined C&F in 2010.

As a dedicated leader, Chan’s daily routine revolves around improving operations, researching company growth strategies, and nurturing undiscovered talent within his team. His handson approach ensures he remains in constant communication with his key team members, motivating them to overcome challenges and celebrate achievements.

With the odds stacked against them, Chan led the team with determination, seeking help from suppliers to optimise machinery. Through tireless collaboration, the team exceeded expectations, completing the order and securing a flourishing line of business. This achievement not only boosted company morale but also propelled a supervisor into a leadership role, showcasing Chan’s ability to inspire and develop talent.

Chan believes in thinking big but starting small, a philosophy that has guided C&F’s growth. He envisions the company becoming the most reputable in Malaysia, with products sold globally. Outside of work, Chan values family time, regular exercise, and continuous learning to stay sharp and connected with his ever-growing team.

Armed with a BA (Hons) in Business Administration from the UK, Nicole entered the family business right after graduation, starting as a merchandiser and quickly transitioning into sales.

Her journey was filled with challenges, especially learning costing from her mentor, a process that required perseverance and long nights. But Nicole’s belief that “tough love builds resilience” helped her rise through the ranks. Today, her daily routine involves coffee, team chats, and listing priorities, a practice instilled by her father that keeps her focused and productive.

One of Nicole’s proudest moments was securing a significant deal for C&F’s potato chips line with a Japanese supermarket chain, a demanding project that showcased her team’s hard work. Nicole’s career has taught her the importance of focusing on the small details, with her father’s advice, “sikit sikit, jadi bukit” (little by little, it adds up), guiding her success.

Outside of work, Nicole enjoys home workouts and is deeply involved in her church’s life groups and services. She also cherishes time with her children and mother, finding solace in family after the loss of her father.

Nicole’s leadership and resilience continue to inspire those around her, making her an influential figure in both her career and personal life.

Jackie’s daily routine involves production planning, marketing, and product development, ensuring every detail is managed with precision and fostering a collaborative and innovative environment. This hands-on approach has driven the company’s growth and success.

One of Jackie’s proudest moments is seeing the Hari Hari brand become a nostalgic part of many childhoods. Hearing from consumers who grew up with the snacks is a source of immense joy, and expanding the brand into international markets is a testament to the team’s dedication.

Over the years, Jackie has learned that adaptability is key in the snack food industry. Staying tuned to market trends and consumer preferences while maintaining product integrity has been essential to keeping Hari Hari thriving.

Looking ahead, Jackie envisions continued growth for C&F, both locally and internationally. With innovation and a strong family legacy, Jackie is confident that Hari Hari will reach new heights.

In free time, Jackie enjoys sports and exploring Sabah’s natural landscapes, finding peace in the beauty of nature. Spending quality time with family is also a cherished part of life, as they remain the greatest support system.

Jackie’s journey with C&F is a story of dedication, resilience, and optimism, inspiring the team and shaping a bright future for the company.

WHY PEOPLE DON’T BOTHER WITH ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS: A CLOSER LOOK

Despite the growing awareness and urgency around environmental issues, many people remain hesitant to engage in environmental efforts. The planet’s health is at stake, yet there seems to be a disconnect between the severity of the situation and public involvement. Understanding the underlying reasons behind this reluctance can help us bridge the gap and inspire more meaningful participation.

First, the perceived nicheness of environmental movements can be a barrier. These efforts often appear to be tailored for specific communities, alienating those who don’t identify with the cause. The activities, jargon, and inner circles of these movements can feel exclusive, leading potential supporters to feel disconnected or unwelcome.

Second, the “holier than thou” attitude exhibited by certain individuals within the movement can be off-putting. Activists who adopt a self-righteous stance inadvertently create a divide between themselves and those they aim to educate. Instead of fostering an inclusive environment, this attitude breeds resentment and defensiveness. People don’t respond well to being talked down to, which can stifle meaningful dialogue and deter engagement.

Finally, the fragmentation of environmental efforts among NGOs, government bodies, and private companies is another major hurdle. Lack of cohesive action and communication between these entities results in a disjointed approach to tackling environmental issues. This separation causes confusion and skepticism among the public, who may feel that their individual contributions are insignificant in the face of such organizational discord.

While these factors contribute to the hesitance around environmental efforts, recognizing and addressing them is the first step towards fostering greater engagement. Bridging the gaps, fostering inclusivity, and presenting a unified front are essential for inspiring broader participation in the fight for our planet’s future.

SUSTAINABLE YEAR-END WEIGHT LOSS

As the year draws to a close, many people find themselves looking to shed a few pounds gained during the holiday season. While exercise plays a vital role in overall health, nutrition is the key driver in achieving and maintaining weight loss. Proper nutrition not only fuels your body but also ensures that you’re losing weight in a sustainable, healthy way. Here’s how you can approach year-end weight loss with a focus on nutrition and sustainability.

1. Prioritize Whole Foods

The foundation of any successful weight loss journey begins with consuming nutrient-dense, whole foods. Focus on vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. These foods are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing the urge to snack on emptycalorie foods.

2. Watch Your Portions

Portion control is crucial, especially during holiday feasts. Be mindful of your serving sizes, and consider using smaller plates to help manage your portions. This simple trick can prevent overeating and ensure you’re consuming the right amount of calories.

3. Stay Hydrated

Often, feelings of hunger can actually be a sign of dehydration. Drinking water before meals can help you feel full and prevent overeating. Aim for at least 8 cups of water a day, and consider herbal teas or infused water for variety.

4. Avoid Sugary Drinks and Processed Snacks

These items are often loaded with empty calories that contribute to weight gain. Instead, opt for natural, unprocessed options. If you have a sweet tooth, try satisfying it with fruit, which offers natural sugars along with fiber and nutrients.

5. Don’t Skip Meals

Skipping meals can slow down your metabolism and lead to overeating later in the day. Instead, aim for balanced meals throughout the day to keep your energy levels stable and your metabolism active.

6. Making Weight Loss Sustainable

For weight loss to be sustainable, focus on gradual changes rather than quick fixes. Aim to lose 0.5-1 kg (1-2 pounds) per week, which is a healthy and achievable rate. Incorporate habits that you enjoy, such as cooking nutritious meals or trying out new healthy recipes, and allow yourself occasional treats without guilt. This balanced approach helps avoid burnout and makes it easier to maintain your progress in the long term.

By focusing on proper nutrition and making gradual, enjoyable changes, you can achieve weight loss that’s both effective and sustainable. As you navigate the end-of-year festivities, let nutrition and sustainable habits guide you to a healthier, fitter you.

THE BALANCE OF FAMILY TIME AND PERSONAL SPACE FOR MENTAL WELL-BEING

Spending time with family is one of life’s greatest gifts, often providing the emotional support and connection we need for a balanced mental state. Being around loved ones can lift our spirits, reduce loneliness, and offer a deep sense of belonging. However, as important as family is, it’s equally crucial to find a healthy balance between family time and personal space, especially if you also work with them or are involved in a family business.

Family relationships often provide a foundation of trust and understanding that can reduce stress and create a supportive environment. Whether it’s sitting down for dinner, sharing in celebrations, or even working on shared goals, these connections give us purpose. But spending too much time together—without establishing boundaries—can lead to feelings of overwhelm or tension, even with the best intentions.

For those who work with family or in a family business, the dynamics can be even more complicated. Family businesses offer a unique set of benefits: shared values, deeper trust, and often, more flexibility. However, the line between work and home can blur, leading to conflicts that seep into personal life. If there’s no clear division between work roles and family roles, you might find yourself feeling constantly “on,” which can take a toll on mental health.

This is why taking breaks and creating personal space is essential. Engaging in self-care activities, such as exercising, reading, or pursuing hobbies, allows you to recharge mentally and emotionally. Spending time alone or with friends outside of the family dynamic offers a fresh perspective, helping you unwind and maintain independence. Whether it’s a short solo getaway or carving out a quiet space at home, these moments are crucial for mental well-being.

One of the most important aspects of balancing family time and personal space is communication. Clearly expressing your need for personal time or breaks can prevent misunderstandings and show that you’re prioritizing your mental health. Family members will often appreciate the transparency, and these small steps ensure that your relationship with family remains strong and positive.

Ultimately, the key is balance. By setting boundaries and taking regular breaks, you can maintain both your well-being and the health of your family relationships. This way, you can enjoy the emotional richness family brings without sacrificing your personal space and mental clarity.

RANTS & RAVES

MATTERS

Family is one of those complicated things—something you’re born into, yet can often feel so entirely out of your control. Most of us are familiar with the frustrations that come with having family members who seem to know exactly how to push our buttons. They’ll bring up past embarrassments, remind you of every small mistake, or share opinions on things they know little about yet feel entitled to judge. They can be supportive in theory, but it can feel like there’s always a catch. Relationships can be stretched thin as boundaries are tested and expectations go unmet. Throw a major life event into the mix—money issues, career shifts, or conflicting values—and what starts as a small disagreement can snowball into a serious rift.

Sometimes, these divides are hard to fix. Old hurts resurface, misunderstandings grow deeper, and pride often takes center stage, making it nearly impossible to meet halfway. For some families, this can lead to permanent distance—siblings who stop speaking, parents and children whose relationships fade, and cousins or aunts who gradually become strangers. And while the ideal might be a family that’s bonded by love and genuine support, the reality is often a fragile peace.

Even when family members manage to stay in touch, the connection sometimes feels more like an obligation than a true bond. They meet for the holidays, exchange gifts, and make small

talk, but underneath, there’s a simmering feeling of tolerance rather than closeness. For many families, staying together isn’t about deep-seated love but rather an agreement to coexist with minimal drama. And sometimes, that’s enough. They may not talk every day or be intimately involved in each other’s lives, but there’s an understanding that they’ll be there when it counts.

Despite it all, family has a strange way of surprising us. Just when it seems like everyone’s gone their separate ways, something happens that pulls them together—a celebration, a loss, or even just a quiet moment that reminds them of their shared history. And while it might not always be the picture-perfect idea of family, sometimes just knowing there’s someone who’s been there from the beginning can mean more than words can express. At the end of the day, family isn’t always about having perfect harmony; sometimes, it’s simply about the fact that, no matter what, they’re still there.

POP CULTURE

What comes to mind when I ask you about your hobby? Gardening? Trading? Playing video games, maybe? What about collecting toys? Lately, more and more people are getting excited about their hobbies, especially when it comes to collectibles. From model kits and Lego to diecast cars and action figures, it’s becoming pretty common to see adults diving into these interests. And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that.

But why do we see adults embracing these hobbies more than kids? A big part of it is nostalgia. Maybe their parents gifted them a radio-controlled car for Christmas or let them watch Transformers cartoons every weekend. It’s likely that some childhood toys hold a special place in their hearts, packed with fond memories.

Let’s be real: these toys can be pretty pricey for kids to buy with their lunch money. That’s where parents come in, sharing their love for these hobbies and turning it into a fun bonding experience. Working together on model kits or collectibles not only strengthens their relationship but also gives parents a chance to share their own cherished memories. It’s a fantastic way to teach kids about creativity and teamwork while making awesome new memories together. It makes the hobby even more special.

But the big question remains: Are these hobbies as childish as they might seem? Not at all! In fact, they can be intellectually stimulating. Take Tamiya, one of Japan’s leading manufacturers

of toys and model kits. Many of their products require selfassembly, making them accessible even for kids. From Mini 4WD cars to vehicle model kits and RC cars, Tamiya offers an educational lineup that introduces concepts of engineering and physics. So, if you’re looking for an educational toy for your child, you now have a great starting point.

That said, too much indulgence can be an issue. Just like getting hooked on video games can be a problem, the same goes for collecting toys—though in a different way. Some of these toys are pricey, especially the rare ones. With limited editions flying off the shelves, some collectors might find themselves tempted to drop their entire paycheck on a single model kit. Worst case scenario, they might even buy from a scalper. Ah yes, scalpers— the bane of consumers! They’re always the first to nab whatever limited edition products they can get their hands on, only to resell them at inflated prices.

Collecting and even engineering toys as a hobby isn’t bad at all, as long as you know how to be responsible with your money. The same goes for any hobby, really. What makes these interests especially special are the memories tied to them and how you can pass on the love to your future children. Nothing is more enjoyable than sharing your hobby with your loved ones!

BEAUTY

Razak Sindu
Nicole Sindu by Nicole Sindu of razaksindustudio

t was a sunny Saturday afternoon in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. And I had the pleasure of spending it with my brother, one of Sabah’s most renowned makeup artists and influencers. Known for his expertise and charismatic presence on social media, he’s a trendsetter in the world of fashion & beauty. Today, he was on a mission to find the perfect eyeshadow palette for an upcoming catwalk event in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

As we entered one of the city’s most popular beauty stores, the vibrant displays of cosmetics immediately caught my eye. Rows of eyeshadows in every imaginable shade and finish stretched out before us. My brother, with his keen eye for detail, began his search, and I was eager to tag along and learn the secrets of choosing the perfect eyeshadow.

1. Consider the Undertones

The first piece of advice Razak shared was about understanding undertones. “Eyeshadow isn’t just about picking a color you like,” he explained, “It’s about finding shades that complement your skin’s undertone.”

He demonstrated how warm undertones (like oranges and golds) work well for those with a warm complexion, while cool undertones (like blues and silvers) suit cooler skin tones. The key is to match the eyeshadow undertone with your natural skin undertone for a harmonious look.

2. Pay Attention to Finish

Next, he delved into the finishes of eyeshadows. “You’ve got matte, shimmer, satin, and glitter,” he said, showing me a range of finishes. “Each has its own effect, and the choice depends on the look you’re going for.”

Matte eyeshadows are perfect for a classic, understated look, while shimmer and glitter are great for adding a pop of sparkle for evening events. Satin finishes offer a subtle sheen, ideal for a day-to-day look. Understanding these finishes helps in selecting the right eyeshadow for various occasions.

3. Evaluate Pigmentation and Blendability

As we moved through the store, my brother took a moment to test a few palettes. “Pigmentation is crucial,” he said, applying swatches on his wrist. “The color payoff should be strong and vibrant.” He also stressed the importance of blendability. “You want eyeshadows that blend smoothly without leaving harsh lines. This ensures a flawless application.” Testing the texture and blendability of the product in-store can save a lot of trouble later on.

4. Choose a Versatile Palette

For someone just starting out, he recommended opting for a versatile palette. “A good palette should have a mix of neutral shades and a few bold colors,” he advised. “This way, you can create a variety of looks with just one palette.”

He suggested palettes with a range of neutral shades for everyday wear and a few standout colors for special occasions. This versatility ensures that your purchase is both practical and fun.

5. Check for Ingredients

Lastly, Razak highlighted the importance of checking ingredients. “Make sure the eyeshadow is free from harmful chemicals,” he said. “Look for products with high-quality ingredients to avoid skin irritation.” He recommended opting for cruelty-free and hypoallergenic options whenever possible, especially for those with sensitive eyes.

By the end of our shopping trip, I had not only enjoyed a day out with my incredibly knowledgeable brother but had also learned invaluable tips for choosing the perfect eyeshadow.

So, the next time you’re on the hunt for the perfect eyeshadow, remember these tips and make your shopping experience both enjoyable and successful. Happy shopping!

Fashion meets Function

t was meant to be a day for my dad and his little Princess (Me!). We decided to explore the TRX City food court. Amidst the hustle and bustle, we were engrossed in the simple pleasures of the day; snacking on our fav cookie, while trying to figure out which food stall we should visit next. My iPhone was my trusty companion for making payments. Little did I know, a highly skilled pickpocket was about to make my day much less enjoyable. In the midst of my distraction, the thief took advantage. It was a slick operation; in less than ten minutes, my phone was stolen. I only realized it when I went to pay for our food and reached for my phone, only to find it missing. Panic set in quickly, and despite our best efforts to track it down, the phone was nowhere to be found.

While the theft was disheartening, it also highlighted the importance of staying vigilant and adopting strategies to prevent such incidents in the future. Here’s how to stay stylish while keeping your phone secure:

1. Opt for a Crossbody Bag

One of the simplest ways to keep your phone secure is by using a crossbody bag. Unlike traditional shoulder bags, which can be easily slipped off, crossbody bags stay close to your body and make it harder for pickpockets to access your belongings. Plus, they come in a variety of stylish designs that complement any outfit.

2. Smartphone Wallets

Smartphone wallets combine your phone and wallet into one sleek accessory. They keep your phone safe and also provide space for cash and cards. With options ranging from elegant leather to vibrant fabrics, these wallets are both practical and fashionable.

3. Hidden Pockets

Modern fashion designers have started incorporating hidden pockets into their clothing designs. These pockets, found in jackets, vests, or trousers, offer a discreet and secure place for your phone. Not only do they add a layer of security, but they also enhance your outfit with a touch of sophistication.

4. Phone-Safe Accessories

Phone lanyards and straps are a trendy way to keep your phone secure. These accessories attach to your phone, making it difficult for anyone to snatch it without your noticing. Available in a range of stylish designs, they can be a fun way to personalize your phone while adding an extra layer of security.

5. The Utility Vest Revival

The utility vest, with its multiple pockets, has made a fashionable comeback. These vests provide ample space for securely storing your phone, and they add a cool, relaxed vibe to any outfit. It’s a practical choice for those who want both style and functionality.

It was a costly lesson for me to learn! A little extra thought about our fashion choices can go a long way in preventing theft and ensuring that we stay stylishly secure. In the end, it’s all about enjoying the moment and staying one step ahead of the pickpockets. With the right accessories and a keen sense of awareness, we can navigate any busy streets with confidence.

VANILLA CRÈME BRÛLÉE Food

Image | kneadsomesweets.com

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups heavy whipping cream

• 5 large egg yolks

• 1/2 cup sugar, plus extra for caramelizing

• 1 pinch fine sea salt

• 1 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste

NOTES

If using larger ramekins, bake 5 minutes longer, or until nearly set with some wobble in the center.

Kedai kupi of the month

CUBANO SANDWICH BAR

METHOD

1. Make the custard: Warm the cream, sugar, and a vanilla bean in a saucepan. In a bowl, whisk together yolks and some additional sugar. Slowly whisk the warm cream into the yolks, and remove the vanilla bean. This is your custard and the base for the crème brûlée.

2. Bake the custard: Divide this custard mixture between several ramekins, place in a hot water bath, and bake until the custard is set, but still jiggly. Chill the custards.

3. Torch the top to caramelize: Just before serving, sprinkle the surface with a little sugar and use a crème brûlée torch to caramelize the sugar and form a brittle crust.

Have you ever heard of Cubano Sandwiches? If you haven’t, now you have the chance to try one out! But before I tell you how and where you can get it, let me just explain what a Cubano Sandwich is. Traditionally and essentially, Cubano Sandwiches are grilled ham-and-cheese sandwiches that were introduced by Cuban immigrants in Florida.

Being hot pressed is the main difference compared to other sandwiches which are normally just toasted. At the Cubano Sandwich Bar in the Plaza 333 Pick N Pay, they serve a traditional version of the sandwich which they call “Ham & Cheese Grilled Sando”. Just keep in mind, you can also make your own custom Cubano Sandwich as well.

The crunch of the bread crust is perfectly offset by the softer inner layer. Since the sliced ham, cheese, and sliced omelette were grilled inside the bread, you get a very warm and savoury meal along with the smoothness of the melted cheeses. Topping it all off is the lemon mayo sauce adding a tangy flavour to the sandwich.

Other Cubano Sandwiches you can try are the Beef Sloppy Joe, Carnivore’s Diet, Marinara Meat Balls, and Smoked Chicken Jalapeno. My personal favourite is the Smoked Chicken Jalapeno, the spicy hit from the jalapeno and cajun spice, caramelised onions implemented into the sandwich.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

HILTON KOTA KINABALU’S ROOFTOP BAR & GRILL: A LOOK AT THEIR FRESH NEW MENU

Hilton Kota Kinabalu’s Rooftop Bar & Grill is a city staple when it comes to dining with a gorgeous view of bustling Kota Kinabalu. Obviously by the name, the restaurant is located at the top floor of Hilton Kota Kinabalu, giving you a view of not only the city but also part of the South China Sea as well. Choose between the premium and cosy dining atmosphere of the indoor section, or a much more relaxed poolside experience.

Keen-eyed readers might’ve noticed that we’ve featured Hilton Kota Kinabalu’s Rooftop Bar & Grill before. Well, we had the chance to try some of the new menu items, and spoiler alert, they are excellent. Here are just some of the highlights you can look out for.

First up, we got the Crab On The Bed, crispy soft shell crab served on Focaccia bread along with fresh Kundasang garden greens, avocado, pomegranate, and topped with citrus vinaigrette. The soft shell crab is as crispy as they get while still providing the fresh flavours of the sea. Focaccia bread, which is a flat leavened oven-baked Italian bread, balances the crispiness with its very soft and light texture. Adding just a bit of a crunch, the garden salad is perfect side for the dish, especially with the pomegranate providing some sweetness and sourness towards the whole dish.

Another seafood centric dish is the Frutti De Mare Spaghetti. This arrabiata sauce based spaghetti dish is topped with tiger prawns, soft shell crab, calamari, and scallops. The selection of seafood is very fresh and rich in the flavours of the sea. This is the perfect all-in-one dish to sample Sabah’s well-known seafood. There is also a hint of spice from the arrabiata. Though, it only adds on a slight kick of flavour as opposed to overwhelming your senses, so everyone can enjoy this dish.

For a heartier meal they have a Wood Fire Grill menu for your choices of stake. Among the dishes we tried, the Australian Black Angus Rib Eye is my favourite. Not only was the steak cooked nicely and tenderly, it was also juicy and flavourful as well. Accompanying the steak are their seasonal vegetables of the day, baked potatoes, house salad, and their sauce of the day. I personally loved pairing the steak with the peppercorn sauce, adding just a bit of a zing to an otherwise perfectly balanced meal.

Last but not least, we have dessert, which is the Coconut Semi Freddo. Semifreddo means half-frozen in Italian, therefore this is a semi-frozen coconut milk dessert accompanied by mango confit and passion coulis. The distinguishing coconut milk flavour

from the semifreddo is complemented by the sweetness and slight sourness from both the confit and coulis. What makes this dessert unique and cool is the dark chocolate dome that covers the whole dish. You’ll also be able to take a sneak peak of the dessert through the cut out holes of said dome. All in all, this is a very refreshing dessert.

The meal and dishes served were made possible by Chef Gray Roysten Livis and his team. Chef Gray is a seasoned culinary professional with over two decades of experience in the fine dining industry. Having worked at esteemed hotels and restaurants in Singapore and Kota Kinabalu, Chef Gray specialises in Italian, French, and Mediterranean cuisine. He recently joined Hilton Kota Kinabalu’s Rooftop Bar & Grill, where his passion for creating exquisite, innovative dishes pairs perfectly with the stunning city skyline. Chef Gray is dedicated to delivering exceptional dining experiences, constantly pushing the boundaries of culinary excellence.
