Intan did the posters because she wanted to do MCO awareness posters that are more attractive to public eye to get the message across more effectively. She was inspired after she noticed the Ministry of Health started posting attractive infographics regarding the status of Covd-19 in the country. Hailing from Sipitang, Intan started becoming an artist since 2013. She loves producing artwork based on drawing human figure, illustration and portrait using charcoal, pencil & acrylic. Recently she started using her Ipad to create digital artwork including the posters. The public can view the posters and her other artworks at her Facebook: Ntan Munirah Hamzah

covid-19 facts

W

hen the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the spread of Covid-19 a pandemic, the world was left with uncertainty and dismay. Many people found it difficult to continue lead their normal lives during this dire time as multifold of countries are trying to minimize the movement of their citizens. To ease the minds of our readers, here are some of the FAQs from the web; explained based on the answers of trained medical practitioners and WHO officials.

What is Covid-19 and how did it start?

Covid-19 is the name of an infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 or SARSCoV-2 virus. It is speculated to have come from wild animals, specifically bats.

How does the virus spread?

The virus only appears to spread from human to human. This means, when an infected individual coughs or sneezes, tiny liquid droplets are spread and lands on surfaces or object around the person. Other people can get infected when in contact with surfaces where the said droplets landed on by touching their face, eyes, nose, or mouth. The virus also can spread when individuals accidentally breathe in the droplets. Therefore, it is important to stay at least 1-2 meters away from a sick person.

Is the virus airborne? And will they spread through surfaces, water, or our mail?

WHO officials do not consider it airborne as the virus is mainly transmitted through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. As for water, there is still no evidence that it is present in our waters, especially for drinking. Again, when a person touches a surface where the droplets landed on, there are possibilities that touching those surfaces can infect us. Ongoing research is still being conducted on virus survival but based on other coronaviruses like SARS, they don’t last very long on our packages and mail.

6

Can pets transmit the virus?

Even though the virus is speculated to come from wild animals, there is no evidence that pets can transmit the virus to humans. As of now, the main transmission of the virus is only human to human.

What are the symptoms of Covid-19? Are healthy people easily infected?

Symptoms include fevers, tiredness, and dry coughs. Some may have nasal congestion and runny noses while experiencing aches and pains. Shortness of breath is also a symptom of Covid-19. Yes, healthy people can become infected as well. Although, those who are most at risk are the elderly and those with underlying health issues like diabetes, heart issues, and high blood pressure. Unfortunately, these group of people are experiencing the highest mortality rates caused by the virus. Those who are experiencing symptoms need to seek medical attention immediately.

Are there any steps to prevent the transmission of Covid-19

Social distancing is one of the main ways to prevent the virus from spreading. Also, we’ve heard this a lot, but washing our hands with soap and water for 20-seconds is another method of prevention. Disinfecting your hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizer helps deactivate the virus as well. Avoid touching your face when you haven’t washed or disinfected your hands. Lastly, if you are feeling unwell, stay at home and avoid going out.

Is there any vaccine for Covid-19?

Currently, there is no specific drug or vaccine available. They are still being researched and tested. Recently, WHO announced a global ‘solidarity trial’ to find out if any existing treatments that can help treat infections associated with Covid-19. Among them are; a drug combo used against HIV, a malaria treatment tested during World War II, and an antiviral that was created to fight Ebola.

Is wearing a mask helpful?

Unless you’re already sick, wearing face masks does not necessarily protect you against Covid-19. It is much more important for sick people to wear them to protect the people around them. Also, due to the shortage in supplies of the face masks, it is important not to hoard all the face masks for yourselves; our front-lines need them way more than those who don’t. For more information and the latest news and facts for Covid-19, you can log on to www.who.int, the official WHO website. Make sure to keep yourself safe at all times. Remember to stay at home and only go out if necessary.

SABAHAN INDIE-POP ARTIST MAYABAYU LAUNCHED DEBUT SINGLE PREDATOR ‘Predator’ is the new debut single from Sabahan indie-pop artist MAYABAYU. Currently based in Kuala Lumpur, she has gathered various acclaims for her work under her previous stage name Beverly Matujal including winning the Global VIMA Award for OVERALL BEST FEMALE ARTISTE in 2018. ‘Predator’ is heavily-influenced by the traditional music of MAYABAYU’s own Kadazan roots, which are uniquely blended with dark synth-pop and rock elements. For MAYABAYU, the single represents a deep catharsis and reinvention of self. In the story of ‘Predator’, she reclaims her past mistakes and flaws, using them as fuel to grow stronger and eventually become the best version of herself. The music video has also just been released last March, that further highlighted MAYABAYU’s heritage and culture. It is viewable now on MAYABAYU’s YouTube and Instagram account. The full track is also available for listening at MAYABAYU’s Spotify account. ‘Predator’ is only a taste of what MAYABAYU has in store for the world, which is truly something that will push the boundaries of contemporary-pop and make a home for East Malaysian traditional music in modern music. Welcome to the Houseparty

T

he restricted movement order is making a huge impact on all Malaysians. We had to prepare ourselves for a drastic lifestyle change in less than 48 hours. First, we saw people trying to buy out grocery stores, then, the next day we saw everyone participate in a mass experiment on working from home. One thing that the RMO didn’t stop though, was our determination to connect with people we care about. Introducing, the Houseparty app. The app that helps you contact, connect and convene with your loved ones. The reason Houseparty is gaining traction right now is because it’s a very informal app. Unlike similar video calling apps, the interface and colours on Houseparty are far less intimidating. And believe us, that’s very important especially if you want your introverted friends to pick up any call. Also, by contrasting its appearance to other equivalent but “clean” apps (like Skype), it takes the edge away from feeling “like it’s work”. An interesting feature of the app is the ability to play games with your friends. And that’s no small feature because it’s going to

12

be tough coming up with topics to talk about during this RMO, and the games act as ice breakers to lead into more meaningful conversations. As of writing this, the app has 4 games — trivia, quick draw (like Pictionary), Chips and Guac (word association), and Heads Up! (charades). Although, some parts of the games might require spending to unlock. Fun fact: Epic Games, the studio behind billion-dollar game Fortnite, acquired Houseparty and decided to make its gaming features “free”. I admit... It might just simply boil down to the fact that Houseparty is just another video calling app. But you can’t ignore how much this nifty little thing brings so much joy to us when we need it the most. Stay safe and stay home everyone!

or the next few weeks or so, the Movement Control Order (MCO) has been put in place by our leaders to deter Covid-19 disease from spreading. While this MCO is taking place, we’re all ordered to stay at home, which means working from home too. However, there are still those in the frontlines who are hard at work to make sure everything is still running smoothly. Let’s take a look at these individuals during this period.

Geraldine Yong, 27, E-commerce Platform Executive Well, work continues as I work from home because it’s an online operated business. But on the side, we are encouraged to learn and I have been doing a lot of E-Learning through Udemy/Coursera. They have a lot of free courses to keep you occupied! I managed to slot in exercising too after a lot of procrastinating! For everyone not in the frontlines, please stay at home. It’s actually a hidden blessing for both mother earth and us to slow down and appreciate life more. Spend more time on self-reflection, self-development and self-love, and rest when you should. After all, the frontliners are counting on us to stay at home so they can get some rest soon! So stay at home and learn some new things.

Geo Allen George, 33, Dietitian I’m required to be at the hospital. My daily job is to do dietetic and nutrition interventions to patients by diet consultations and observations. Our core service is to plan therapeutic menus as well as forecasting the daily budget for all our patients’ meals. We take care of the Hospital Foodservice as well as the hospital cafeteria. Now, we’re really strict and taking more precautions on the food handling and suppliers from outside, especially hygiene and source wise. It’s not easy to work outside and I understand it’s not easy to stay at home for long periods either. However, everyone plays an important role to break this Covid19 chain and ensure we’re safe and hygienic always. Staying at home is the best option right now and keeping yourself updated with all the reliable sources especially from the CPRC, KKM, and MKN is crucial too. Don’t worry and have faith, we will make it through this together.

Hendryi Choo, 28, Medical Laboratory Technologist I’m one of the front-liners in the healthcare industry, but I am not a nurse nor a doctor. We’re the ones who perform complex tests that help other healthcare professionals such as physicians detect, diagnose, and treat diseases. So basically, we run the tests for COVID-19. If you suspect that you have COVID-19 or any symptom for that matter, it’s really important to call your health professional before of visiting them. Please remember, wash your hands frequently and quarantine yourself if you’re sick. If possible, avoid large crowds and touching common surfaces with your hands. Do not believe and spread misinformation regarding Covid-19. Lastly, be alert but don’t panic, this helps you make important decisions for you and your family.

13

Syazlin Amalina, 27, Dental Officer During this MCO, the dental sector still operates, but we are taking shifts. We handle emergency cases such as swelling, pus accumulation, non-stop bleeding, pain or any life-threatening situations that involve dentistry. Non-emergency cases or situations are on hold at the moment. We have a few staff as first and foremost front-liners. They will ask patients for their history of traveling, coughing, or fevers within the last 2-weeks while their temperatures are being taken. If they do have a history or show any signs or symptoms, we will advise them to approach the medical side first before entering our clinic. At this crucial time, please stay at home. If you experience symptoms as mentioned by the health minister, do get yourself checked. Please be honest when the doctors ask you questions regarding your social or travel history, especially if you have any symptoms. Take care and #StayAtHome

Pejal Noor, 36, Banking Officer Before the MCO, I usually handle matters behind the scenes, but now I help to check the temperatures of our customers and clients. This is part of our Standard Operating Procedures, so none of our clients or staff are at risk of contracting the virus while visiting our building. My message for everyone reading this is short and simple, please stay home and stay safe. Let’s do our part to help other front-liners to stop the Covid-19 chain.

Wilson Gan, 32, Farmer My farms are in Keningau. We supply vegetables to the local markets. However, I have to manage them remotely as I have to be here in KK with my family. Here, my wife and I are busy helping to meet the needs of the community and hospitals through our NGO, JCI Tanjung Aru. Right now, we’re making face shields for those who need them. Spending time with my family 24/7 is a blessing too. Also, my cooking skills have increased exponentially. Staying at home is essential during this MCO. However, please also remember to check on your neighbours and other groups in need, like orphanages, old folks homes, and B40 families. Make sure they have enough food and medical supplies to survive through this MCO.

Royners Sing, 31, Airline Guest Service Officer During the first week of the MCO, we were still required to report at the airport as usual, since there were a few flights coming and going. However, we were asked to stay at home on the second week, just in standby mode. We need to work together to ensure that everyone stays at home during this MCO. Try to at least enjoy every moment at home, a lot of people are still outside working but wishing they can have the chance to rest and stay at home too. We have to cooperate with the government to ensure this MCO is effective. 14

earth is getting a breather

W

ith the Covid-19 pandemic spreading to all corners of the world, the leaders of our country have made the right call by announcing the Movement Control Order (MCO). This means almost every one of us should stay at home unless we need to run essential errands for our household. “Almost” because front-liners are still out there providing us with the necessities we need to stay comfortable at home and ensuring we stay safe. That being said, there aren’t many people, if any, walking and driving around at this moment. Bustling cities have come to a halt and highways are close to empty. Somehow, we can look at our current situation in a positive light. Don’t take this the wrong way, we shouldn’t take this pandemic lightly, but we need some positivity to get us through this. The bright side to all of this is, Earth is actually getting a breather for a couple of weeks. The absence of vehicles and traffic congestion has caused less carbon monoxide to be released into our atmosphere. Even non-essential factories aren’t in operation for a while. With no pedestrians on the streets, there are fewer litterbugs walking around out there. Also, with everyone at home worrying about not having enough food supply, people will try their best to not waste food. It also helps that Earth Hour takes place right in the middle of all of this, when most of the country can participate.

From where I stand, the skies look clearer than before, the breeze blowing cleaner air, and each breath I take is fresher than ever. It certainly seems like a whole new world. If you don’t believe me, take a look at the pollution levels of countries such as China. Their tighter lockdown led to a huge drop in air pollution. However, when things get up and running again, are we able to sustain this cleaner “new world” for long? Maintaining the fresh air and clean streets is a big task for all of us after this. When we continue with our normal lives, take extra steps to ensure you’re also doing what’s best for our earth. Turn our current experience into an awareness of how we should treat our planet. Let’s start by working together to slow down and stop the spread of the disease now, and continue working together after all this to ensure our environment is also healthy. Stay home and stay safe everyone.

Find Your Flow in the MCO

T

he recent Movement Control Order due to the COVID19 is a massive change to our lifestyles, from being able to move freely, and work in our jobs or develop our businesses. So while we’re in this MCO period, let’s focus on using the time to increase our wellness and expand our lives. Here are four things you can do: Firstly, seriously make time to exercise daily. Personally since the MCO started I have been exercising with Coachy Cruz every morning, and you can catch us live for free daily workouts on www.instagram.com/cruzfitnesskinabalu. Exercise will add structure to your days, increase your energy, and help boost your immune system. On top of that you’ll find that it will regulate your hunger and also help you to sleep better.

could either give away or throw away. Honestly, I am a packrat, I have many things that I no longer use, that could be better used by someone else. Besides, when you clear your space, you also clear your mind and allow for new ideas and things to come into your life. Thirdly, do start that long overdue project or learn that skill which you’ve put off, there’s never been a better period to block out some time. What’s that one thing that you have always wanted to do which you’ve neglected? If you put in an hour every day during the MCO, you’d have at least 28 hours. That’s plenty of time to read up, to try new things, to build something up!

Lastly, and most importantly, reach out to those you love. If they’re right next to you, do make the best of the time with them Secondly, do use this time to declutter. Being at home longer to watch movies, chat, and even cook together. If they’re in a will allow you to see what you truly need and use, and what you different location, take advantage of technology to give them a call as they’re definitely available now too. by Dr. Sivakumar Kumaresan Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Universiti Malaysia Sabah Sabah’s First NLP Trainer at UMS Investment Holdings Sdn. IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR MEDICAL CHECK UP Prevention is better than cure.

R

egular health exams and tests can help find problems before they start. They also can help find problems early, when your chances for treatment and cure are better. By getting the right health services, screenings, and treatments, you are taking steps that help your chances for living a longer, healthier life. Your age, health and family history, lifestyle choices (i.e. what you eat, how active you are, whether you smoke), and other important factors impact what and how often you need healthcare. The benefits of regular check-ups include: • Reduce your risk of getting sick • Detect potentially life-threatening health conditions or diseases early • Increase chances for treatment and cure • Limit risk of complications by closely monitoring existing conditions • Increase lifespan and improve health • Reduce healthcare costs over time by avoiding costly medical services

Form a good partnership with the doctor so treatment can be more efficient Get updated on new medical information or technologies that are available

How often you should go for medical check up : It depends on age, gender and risk factors. But the best way is to have it done once a year. Regular screening helps to detect conditions that may develop after the last screening. Preventive health screening checklist : 1. Annual well-visit (annually) • Family history • Blood pressure • Body mass index (BMI) • Physical exam • Preventive screening Blood Sugar Cholesterol Kidney function Liver function • Counseling

Home Workouts for the Social Distancer

W

ith the COVID-19 pandemic and Movement Control Order currently in effect, many of us are restricted to our homes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still keep up an active lifestyle! Exercise is essential for both mental and physical health, especially in times of instability and uncertainty.

2. Lower Body Focus: 3 to 5 sets

With that in mind, we’ve put together two workouts for you to do in the comfort of your own home! The workouts require minimal equipment. All you really need is a mat, a little bit of room, and a towel. The workout:

1. Upperbody & Core Focus: 3 to 5 sets •

10 to 12 reps push ups with 2-sec pause at bottom

Get down on all fours and straighten your arms and legs. Position your hands slightly wider than your shoulders. Lower your body until your chest nearly touches the floor and pause in that position for 2 seconds. Then push yourself back up, and repeat.

10 to 12 reps close grip push ups Similar to push ups, only this time, position your hands slightly inside your shoulders. Lower your body until your chest nearly touches the floor then push yourself back up, and repeat.

10 to 12 reps W-extensions with towel Lie down on your stomach with arms raised in front of you, stretching a towel, and feet down. Pull your elbows in as far as you can until the towel passes the back of your head, and repeat. 10 to 12 reps plank walk outs Plant your hands directly under your shoulders (slightly wider than shoulder width), as if you’re about to do a push up. Ground your toes into the floor and squeeze your glutes to stabilize your core. Steadily walk your hands forward while stabilizing your core, and pause. Then walk your hands back in to your starting position to complete one rep. 10 to 12 reps side plank weave - per side Start on one side with your feet together and one forearm directly below your shoulder. Engage your core and raise your hips until your body is in a straight line from head to feet. Now raise the other arm towards the ceiling then rotate your trunk slightly to lower the arm and thread under the body without letting your hip drop, and repeat.

10-12 reps overhead squats with towel Hold a towel overhead with both arms. Bend your legs to lower slowly, keeping your knees wide apart with your chest up and back straight until your hamstring touches your calves. Then drive back up slowly. 10-12 reps reverse lunges - per side Stand upright and take a large step backwards with either one of your feet. Lower your hips so that your front leg is parallel to the floor, with your front knee positioned directly over your ankles and your foot flat. The back knee should be bent at a 90-degree angle and pointing towards the floor with the heel lifted. Return to standing by driving the back leg forward to complete one rep.

10-12 reps single leg deadlift to jump - per side Stand on your left leg, with your knee slightly bent. Bend forward at the hips allowing your right leg to come up behind you. Continue until the right leg and chest are parallel to the floor. In one quick movement, swing your arms forward, raise your chest and use your left foot to push off the floor, driving your right knee up. Land on your left foot softly and lower back into the bent over position, keeping your right foot off the ground throughout.

10-12 reps single leg hip bridge - per side Lay on your back with your hands by your sides, your knees bent and feet flat. Make sure your feet are parallel to your knees. Tighten your abdominal muscles and squeeze your glutes. Raise your hips up to create a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Raise and extend one leg while keeping your hip raised. Hold, before returning to starting position to complete one rep.

We developed these workouts to be functional and versatile to any environment, in keeping with this time of social distancing. If you’d like to see more workouts like this, head over to our Instagram @hustlefitness.kk and check out our Hustle Home WOD step-by-step videos!

Rants & Raves

stuff to do at home

even get the glow up you’ve been wanting. Secondly, you can bake, or cook and try new recipes! You can buy ingredients before hand and bake when you feel bored. This way, you will have something to do and a tasty treat after.

S

o right now, the world seems to have stopped at a red light. Things aren’t exactly going great with the pandemic and all, with most people stocking up for this period of quarantine. It was kind of disappointing when our two-week quarantine has now been extended for two more weeks, but I guess it is for the better. Hopefully this time around, there will finally be decreases in the number of people infected and affected. So, make sure that all of you follow the rules too and just sit tight at home. It seems that this pandemic has made the world stand still. Many things have been either delayed or canceled to avoid a mass crowd from gathering. Although students have always complained that they need a break from school, I’m pretty sure a lot of us aren’t quite happy now that we can’t actually go to school. For some, schools and universities have even decided to stop online classes. Exams are also being cancelled and postponed. For example, the IGCSEs and A Levels this coming May and June have been cancelled. Most people aren’t allowed to go to work either unless they are essential services. Restaurants are also mostly closed due to the fact that people are not allowed to gather but their takeaway services are still available. So, since we are all stuck at home, here’s a few things you can do if you are bored! First of all, you can finally start exercising and stop giving the excuse that you are too BUSY. It’s also important that you do at least a bit of exercise because you don’t really get to even walk anywhere and gyms are also closed. This might just be the time for any of you pushing to get in shape to start working out, or

Third, you can catch up on some reading. For example, I myself, am a bookworm. So, I have A LOT of books and sometimes I can buy a lot at a time and never get around to reading them. Since I have so much free time, I am actually doing a challenge to read fourteen books in fourteen days. That way, I can finally read the stack of books I’ve been putting off for awhile now and it helps the time pass. Fourth, if you feel that you have not socialised in a while, you can Facetime friends on Skype, Google Hangouts or other apps that allow you to Facetime a lot of people at once. This way you won’t feel so lonely! Also, you could stream a movie and have movie time together! If you have a Netflix account, that makes things so much easier because Netflix has this extension on Google called Netflix Party and it allows people to watch movies together! You will start together and you can pause together while being able to text your friends in a chat provided. However, everybody would need to have a Netflix account for this to work. Lastly, you could also have a karaoke session if you own a microphone. Even if you don’t, I’m sure you wouldn’t mind having a solo party as well. These are just some ideas for you guys if you’re bored but I’m sure you guys can come up with better things to do too! Maybe a movie marathon, or writing a story you’ve been hiding? Get creative and try to have fun at home.

significance of face masks

T

pop culture

here’s always that one thing we take for granted in everyday use. Our smartphones, laptops, and even our toilets. Of course, we can live without these things, but it wouldn’t be comfortable. Something that was overlooked before this was the face mask. What was abundantly available a few months ago is now experiencing production shortages. But what are face masks and why have they become so important today?

In countries where pollution has become a big problem such as China, we can see many of their citizens wearing face masks. On the other hand, modern cultures like fashion and streetwear, have adopted the face mask as a fashion accessory. The fashionconscious try to implement them in their fit to complement their outfit. Brands have also offered face masks that have attractive colors and designs on them.

Face masks help protect you from breathing in harmful particles in the air. Be it viruses, pollen, or gases, different types of problems require different types of face masks. Surgical masks are what we usually see people wear. These are loose-fitting and easy to breathe in and out of. They have different levels of filtration in them too. N95 masks are more “heavy-duty” in nature. This type of mask filters almost every type of particle but you’ll also need much more effort to breathe with them. Lastly, masks simply help you avoid breathing in allergens like pollen and pet fur.

During the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) pandemic in 2003, face masks became vital in slowing down the spread of the disease. Now, with Covid-19 spreading across the world, we need them back “in service” to combat a deadly virus yet again. However, you can only choose between two types of face masks. Basic surgical masks are sufficient to protect us, but admittedly, they don’t do as good as a job as the N95. Also, although pollen masks look cool, they are not suitable for our current situation. Lastly, due to the shortage, we should remember not to keep a lifetime’s supply of face masks for ourselves. Some need it more than we do, especially those working in the front-lines. At least in Malaysia, our leaders have advised us to only use face masks when we are not feeling well, as to manage with the shortage.
