mage is an important part of a person’s life. The phrase “first impressions last” is a good example of how people can judge the way we work and our personalities based on how we look and talk. So, it’s no secret that we should take care of how we present ourselves to the world. For this issue, Breeze is featuring individuals that help enhance your image, be it through apparel or your speaking abilities, they’re sure to help boost your confidence in public.
Faith Nathene Cham Xin Tzee: Founder Of Hustletic Apparel Having always been in the fitness industry, Faith noticed good quality activewear is often coupled with hefty price tags. In June 2018, she decided to change that by introducing Hustletics Apparel. Her main goal is to bring high-quality activewear that is affordable yet feels great. They have customers from almost everywhere, mostly from the United States and some from Europe. Hustletics Apparel treats every client like a celebrity. Being able to enter the United States market is a big achievement. Product-wise, their Flow Bumblebee Leggings are the best selling products they have. Moving forward, appeasing the public with new collections every season is a focus, and also the use of sustainable fabrics is on the agenda. “I think the public image is definitely underrated in most situations; the image that one portrays to the public will ultimately be what everyone sees of you. For us, we love dressing comfortable, without jeopardizing the aesthetics.”
Don. C: Founder and Creative Director of Sweed Don. C always had an affinity for streetwear, and having a passion for art, he combined the two to establish Sweed in December 2019. Sweed is an upcoming fun and exciting brand in streetwear. The founder’s goal is to make Sweed accessible for everyone without discrimination, regardless of gender or age. The clothing company has grown bigger than he initially expected, having already gone international and acquired celebrity customers very early in its development. Seeing a lot of people wearing Sweed products is a big achievement for Don. C. For now, Sweed only produces hand crafted custom t-shirts, but in the future, Don. C wants to “take over the world” one step at a time. “Currently, because of how our world works, and how linked and exposed everybody is via technology. I would have to say that public image is definitely important, but it is not everything. There are many out there who are willing to tarnish or brighten one’s reputation. So personally, I always do a thorough background check, and to not always believe what you see and hear, especially on social media.”

Benreza Uzair: Public Speaking Coach Benreza a.k.a. Ben, was born and raised in Kota Kinabalu. Annoyed by how pageant contestants blindly memorized lines and not mean what they say, he decided to start coaching it in 2017. Ben wants the youth to confidently convey their ideas with conviction. That’s the end goal of his lessons. Thriving for quality instead of quantity, he is proud to have coached a handful of Sabahans who represent our country internationally. Ben has helped numerous youths. Among them are Miss Malaysia participants, Unduk Ngadaus, Datuks, and Datins. Seeing his students succeed is a big achievement for him while having a student thank him during a speech was the best experience he’s had. In the future, Ben aspires to reach as many Malaysian youths as possible. “ To be unique and to stand out, you must present your best self physically, aesthetically and intelligently. The whole package—the way you exude your personal brand, the way you dress in public, the way you talk to people, the way you articulate on issues, the way you contribute to society, the way you express your “santun”-ness, even the way you write on social media and respond to your critics—matter.”
Camilla Faris: ANTING by Camilla This 23-year old from Kota Kinabalu is the founder of jewelry brand, ANTING. Camilla started ANTING when she noticed the lack of jewelry/craft stores catering to minimal yet distinctive pieces. ANTING champions empowerment and confidence for all women. Camilla’s customer base has grown tremendously thanks to word of mouth and social media. Although based in Kota Kinabalu, ANTING has traveled all over the world. Just to name a few, TV host Daphne Iking, Miss Malaysia 2019 Shweta Sekhon, and Canon Youth Ambassador Acacia Diana are among ANTING’s notable customers. Collaborating with the Kinabalu Pink Ribbon to empower breast cancer patients is their biggest achievement yet. Camilla is working on making ANITING a global social enterprise. She wants to empower local communities through employment opportunities and leadership skill training. “Public image plays an important role especially when you are growing a brand. Apart from upholding ANTING’s image through quality, value, and efficiency, I also make it a point to be genuine in my interactions with customers. In relationships, we are drawn to people who can share their feelings and their true selves, admit their flaws, and be honest and open, or authentic. We feel a connection with such people because we know we can trust them. The same goes for brands. I believe that authenticity breeds trust and this, in turn, will enrich the customer’s shopping experience.” 11

Ikhwan Hassanat Every time I go to my popo’s house back in the day, ill always pop the VHS in and watch this. Look at that stellar cast, this is gonna be good. (I hope her dragon will appear - voiced by the one and only Eddie Murphy). Cmon March, looking forward to this!
This movie reminds me about Hollow Man in year 2000. He can be invisible and kill everyone as no one can see him. I wonder how Cecilia can survive from this invisible man.
TROLLS WORLD TOUR
Angel Lee I saw the original version of Mulan (the real story, the historical one) and the animated of Disney. Both are different and have completely different endings. No wonder, one is based on a real story and the other one is a Disney story. This “remake” seems like a combination of both, so I’m really excited to see it!
Ollie Faurillo My kids have been bugging me most of the time about this movie, they really can’t wait for it to be play at the cinema. Now Queen poppy in charge, i just can’t wait for the awesome show the trolls gonna come up with.
I STILL BELIEVE
Maxine Natalie Julian I have watched Mulan the animation movie more than 20 times already. Whenever I feel down and powerless Mulan has been my number one inspiration for getting back up and keep fighting. Not giving up especially in a world where men look down on women. I could never get tired of watching Mulan. Plus! Reflection is in my playlist and would listen to it over and over again.

e’ve all been there. Either we’re looking for some sounds to compliment our day or to enjoy something new for a change, we are always searching. Sometimes, we might not realize those sounds can come from our backyard. Our featured music artist this month is a homegrown talent that made me have that realization. Clinton, also known as MKNK, is an independent artist/producer in the Hip Hop music scene. Inspired by mechanics, MKNK is a metaphor of the person who helps everyone with their problems but has no one to ask for help themselves. Just like how a mechanic fixes people’s cars but drives a worn out car for himself. Also, although he is based in Kuala Lumpur, he hails from Kota Kinabalu and is proud to represent Sabah in Malaysia’s music scene. MKNK is passionate about delivering music that speaks to his audience emotionally. Some of his inspirations and influences come from Childish Gambino, Blink-182, and Eminem. Having spent 9 years perfecting his craft, he fuses heavy hip hop beats with organic sounds while topping them with fresh pop melodies. Not only working on his own music, MKNK has also collaborated with such musical acts like Benzooloo, Tuju (K-Clique), and Airliftz just to name a few. Last year in 2019, he dropped a 9-track album titled Quarter Life. The album is based on the struggles and experiences he and his peers had from their pasts. As mentioned before, MKNK loves

telling stories through his music. He creates experiences in the audio waves and unique grooves to bring his listeners on a journey. In 2020, he plans to release a single each month. His latest single, Mee Goreng, is the heaviest head bopping track MKNK has produced thus far. Featuring a collaboration with ASYRNSIR and neewgxi, the single tells the journey of friends searching for fried noodle (literal meaning of the title) to satisfy their hunger. The trio came up with the lyrics while exploring the boundaries of songwriting. With that said, you should put MKNK on your radar for sure. The sky is truly the limit for him. Stay tuned for more of MKNK to come. You can find his music on Spotify, Soundcloud, and YouTube.

S20 series: Samsung is exciting again
S
amsung’s new flagship will put a bang on smartphone benchmarks this year. We’ve criticized Samsung for a while now about being complacent. They’ve slightly disappointed their fans by just adhering to the mainstream standards instead of going above them like they used to. But their recent S20 series flagship release means that they’re ready to get back into the innovation game. While many were probably expecting an S11, Samsung jumped all the way to S20. The S20 comes in three — vanilla, plus, and ultra. All of them are amazing phones by their own right, but the S20 ultra truly takes the cake. The 108 megapixels and 5000mah battery takes my breath away. If a jaded phone reviewer gives a device praise, it should impress you. We’d like to reiterate that megapixels aren’t everything — but we’re excited to see how Samsung implements the technology and its sensor size. During development, the S20 was called “Picasso”, named after a famous painter. It’s clear that Samsung is telling its team to start

getting excited about smartphone photography again! Not only that, the S20 supports a refresh rate of 120hz (at 1080p). Prepare your eyes for super smooth animations. I’ve always argued that the next step for smartphones isn’t resolution, it’s refresh rate. If you haven’t experienced 120hz refresh rate yet, head down to a store now and test it out. It will change your life. Finally, we’re getting something that can compete with the smartphone photography legends, The Nokia Lumia 1080 and 808. Not only will these new devices support 8K video resolution, the main camera is a huge 1/1.3 sensor. That’s enormous for a smartphone! I won’t lie though, I’m concerned about how Samsung will decide to price these devices. Fingers crossed they won’t cost you both your kidneys.

W
hen you think of a getaway, you usually don’t expect to learn anything new specifically. At My Kebun Vanilla At Kinarut, you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city all while learning a thing or two about vanilla farming. It is a 2-acre vanilla farm located at Limbata village, Kinarut, just off the old Papar road. As soon as you arrive and get out of your car, you notice the fresh air rushing through your nose and the calm atmosphere surrounding you. Leo Komuji, the owner of My Kebun Vanilla At Kinarut, has spent more than 10 years working on the farm. He had to learn proper techniques to successfully enjoy reaping the seeds of his crops. Through trial and error, he has improved his technique over the years. The best time to visit the farm is during the flowering or harvesting season. The flowering season is from March until May. At this time of year, visitors can witness the flowers budding from the vanilla stalks. They can also participate in the pollination process, which is important to ensure the flowers can grow into the beans. When they’re ready to harvest, from November until January, visitors can also help in the harvest. Leo has a vast knowledge about farming vanilla and he doesn’t hesitate to share it either. He wants to educate not only the visitors but also everyone else about the vanilla industry. His experience has allowed him to establish a more modern method compared to when he first started. When you visit his farm, he will introduce to you traditional methods of vanilla farming. Then he explains and

compares them to the new method that he developed through the years. At the end of the day, you can also visit the farm to just relax in a natural environment and enjoy the fresh air. Entry is free and Leo recommends visiting between 8 am till 10 am in the flowering season where you can witness the flowers blooming. If you’re interested in starting your own vanilla garden, there are seedlings for sale at the farm for RM13 per stalk. For more information, you can contact Leo by calling 0128333899.
Layang Layang Flying Academy
Flying Doesn’t Have To Be A Dream Anymore
E
stablished in Kota Kinabalu by Hj Johan Poong Abdullah, Layang Layang Flying Academy (LLFA) carries the vision of its founder to spur and meet the youths’ enthusiasm for flying. With that vision in mind, Hj Johan assembled a team of aviation professionals and experienced workers and formed the enthusiastic, experienced, and capable backbone of the academy. Known as the Layang Layang Helicopter Academy when they first started their operations in 2014, the academy began to upgrade and enlarge their portfolio through the years. In 2018, it changed its name to what we now know as LLFA because of the growing demand for fixed-wing aircraft pilots, engineers, and technicians in the aviation industry. LLFA aspires to be the premier aviation academy in the region. It strives to provide, equip, and develop their trainee pilots through their knowledge, skills, and attitude by providing the best facilities and environment, allowing trainee pilots to excel in their field. LLFA has two branches. The headquarter, in Kota Kinabalu, was established in October 2014, while the latest branch situated in Ipoh, Perak was established in January 2019. As mentioned, LLFA now provides two types of aircraft training, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Among the course it offers are Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) for Aeroplanes 20
or Helicopters, and Private Pilot Licence (PPL) for Aeroplanes or Helicopters. Currently, it has more than 140 trainee pilots, and 41 Theoretical Knowledge and Flight instructors. Trainee pilots usually undergo a 24-month training period. They go through 12 months of Theoretical lessons and then thereafter comes the 12-month Practical Flying phase. LLFA provides many facilities for trainees including accommodation, classrooms, and best of all, flight simulators. They have simulators for both airplanes and helicopters. With these simulators, trainees can safely learn and practice the correct procedures of handling an aircraft without taking off the ground. The lessons aren’t only in the classrooms and simulators, however. LLFA do their best to expose trainees to the world of aviation. Visits to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower and Airport Fire & Rescue Services (AFRS) are big parts of the program. In addition, trainees not only train on the ground. With the guidance of their instructors, trainees also get to pilot an aircraft in practical situations. Their end goal is to be able to handle and fly an aircraft on their own.
Speaking of aircraft, LLFA has 11 aircraft for training purposes. 8 of them are fixed-wing airplanes, being the Cessna C172 and the Piper P34. The rest are the Bell B206B3 and the Airbus AS255F1 and F2 helicopters. Being part of the Layang Layang Aerospace (LLA) Sdn Bhd group, all the aircraft are maintained by LLA. After graduation, trainee pilots have the potential to work for commercial airline companies. Some of LLFA’s graduates are now either working for private or government companies. Apart from flying commercially, graduates can also contribute their skills as general aviation professionals or maritime pilots. Past graduates inspire the current and next generation of trainees to fulfill their dreams of taking to the skies. If you are interested in joining LLFA, you must at least have passed your Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with credits in 5 subjects. You’ll also need to be 18 years or older and have a Class 1 medical statistics. For more information on this, you can log on to the website at www.layanglayangflyingacademy.com.

The sky is truly the limit for Layang Layang Flying Academy trainees as LLFA provides complete and ample learning experiences for the trainees. LLFA is not only providing the aviation industry with skilled and knowledgeable pilots but also making the dreams of aspiring pilots come true.
What after
SPM? T
he age-old question of what after SPM still plagues our bright eyed 17 year olds every year and this March 2020 will be no different. Come middle of March, we will see many graduating high schoolers excitedly, dutifully and apprehensively taking that first step to making a major decision in their lives! After being in this line for almost 20 years, I think it’s a little unfair to throw them into the deep end to decide and decide NOW what career they wish to have for the rest of their lives. It may be intimidating and scary to impose this on our next generation who most probably feel the immense pressure of society and family to respond and achieve as expected. But what DO we expect from them? Be a doctor! Be a professional! Then your future is guaranteed! Be a lawyer, fight for justice! Or be an engineer or accountant. Whilst yes, these traditional professions may have served us and our parents’ generations well, and yes, we still need them; but there are many other careers to consider. Taking a look at the top 5 companies in 2020 compared to the top 5 in 2010 will give you some insight into how careers have shifted in just 10 short years. Experts say that the IR4 (Industrial Revolution 4) is only at its infancy. So what does the next 10 years hold and how does a student at 17 make a decision? The IEC Way - Interest - Environment Cost.
by Jasmine Leong CEO of IEC - Study English, Study Abroad Centre in Kota Kinabalu www.iec.com.my 22
INTEREST: As Mark Twain said, ‘The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you discover why’ and the ‘why’ starts with a person’s interests. There are basically 10 areas of interests a student can explore to study more in depth in and they are: Health Sciences Anything to do with human health and the discovery of new drugs and medicine to keep our species alive and well falls under this category. Think medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, etc. Physical Sciences Engineering tops the list in this one but other sciences such as archeology, geology, biotechnology innovation also falls under physical sciences. Humanities Law, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Politics, International Relations etc. Basically the study of human science. Built Environment Anything to do with buildings and planning so Architecture, Interior Design, Quantity Surveying, Land Surveying, Construction Management etc. IT Information Technology has expanded so vastly in the last 10 years that it now has its own areas of study students can major in. Everything from the basic computer science to applied computing, programming, software, nanotechnology, mobile and cyber security will be under the IT school. Business Do you want to solve everyday problems using numbers, which will lead you to accounting, finance, investment banking route or solve them with people? Which will lead you to management, marketing, human resource management route? Media & Communication Media has changed quite dramatically due to technology - e-commerce, social media, e-marketing are now buzz words as new forms of media take over the way we communicate. Courses such as mass communication, public relations, media production, advertising all fall under this area of study and quickly changing as new media evolve and emerge as fast as you can say Netflix.
Art & Design Fashion, graphic design, product design, animation, games design and anything to do with fine arts will be under this area of study. Tourism & Hospitality This industry used to be under the school of Business but has become such a niche that it has branched out on its own. There are hospitality only schools set up around the world that are focused on preparing graduates for this industry and combines work and study in a safe and conducive environment. Switzerland is one of the pioneers and experts in this, giving opportunities to their graduates to intern in and around Europe due to their strategic location. Performing Arts / Skills Culinary, Dance, Theatre, Music courses would fall under this category of study and are for students who feel their talent is not so much in academics but in the performing arts. Students of this art form can easily transit into teaching the skill to the next generation as well, apart from performing. ENVIRONMENT: After identifying your interests, the next step is to look at which environment you would like to study in? Which type of study environment would suit you best in terms of personality, opportunities and future connections? We represent a host of locations that use English as the main language of instruction such as Australia, NZ, UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Singapore, and Malaysia. COST: Thirdly and finally cost will need to be considered. Will your parents be sponsoring your studies? Or would you need financial assistance through the Malaysian government or university scholarships? Some universities do offer bursaries of up to RM10,000 or more per year so it all depends on your results used for entry as well as your academic resume and background. IEC will be holding an Education fair this 28th March 2020 (Sat) 1-5pm at Level 1, Marriott Hotel KK and it’s free admissions to all who want to find out more about furthering studies abroad or within Malaysia. Come with your latest academic results for on the spot assessment with the over 50 colleges and universities represented. IEC counsellors will be at hand to assist and guide you as well to discover your interests and make the best decision for your future.

Beverley Shim: Image through makeup
ur personality this month helps people look their best no matter the occasion. Beverley Shim of Muah Studio is an award-winning makeup artist from Kota Kinabalu (KK). She has been in the industry for more than 10 years now and has seen a lot of changes in the industry. Breeze had the chance to sit down and talk with Beverley about herself in the makeup industry and how make up can help improve a person’s image.
a job at The Body Shop as their makeup trainer, working there for 2 years. I then worked at a makeup academy for half a year before starting Muah Studio in 2010.
BZ: What were the challenges when you started Muah Studio? BV: There were two major challenges I faced in the beginning. Financially, it was challenging because of the cost to buy my equipment and other things to set up my studio. Secondly, the location of my small studio was not very desirable. It was behind a Breeze (BZ): Can you tell us when you started doing makeup? lottery operator and there was even a hawker selling fritters next to Beverley (BV): Background wise, I studied to be a quantity it. surveyor at University Malaya and worked as one for 8 months. After that, I quit and went to study makeup in Kuala BZ: How was the reception in terms of clients then? Lumpur. I came back to KK after I finished my course and got BV: I think because fewer people were doing makeup professionally, it was easier to find clients at the time. When I started, people would notice me because there were demands for dinner and wedding makeup. There was also a demand for makeup workshops and classes back then. by Noel Jinguli Images | Srap & Beverley Shim BZ: What about now? BV: Now there are so many makeup artists and I think it’s getting 24
crowded. However, the demand for makeup artists is actually increasing today. We also have social media these days to help market our business. Because of social media, people are more aware of makeup and are willing to try out new and different looks. BZ: You won NYX Face Awards 2018 Malaysia and Malaysia Makeup Artist Award 2019. Tell us a bit more about winning these awards. BV: For the NYX Face Awards 2018 Malaysia, there were a few rounds among the competitors. When I won, I got to join all the other winners from around the world and experienced Los Angeles (LA) as part of the prize. It was a lot of fun. I also gained new found knowledge when I visited the makeup studios there. Meeting other makeup artists from around the world and international photographers was quite an experience. So there was a lot of exposure for me.
Beverley does makeup & hairdo for weddings and other kinds of events. On a personal note, she loves doing fantasy/ sfx makeup.
The Malaysia Makeup Artist Award 2019 was held in Malaysia, of course. There were about 40 contestants from all over Malaysia competing. It was easier compared to the NYX competition because there was only 1 round to compete in. The contestants were pretty good though and I’m grateful I came out as the winner among the top makeup artists in Malaysia. BZ: What are your thoughts on makeup for someone’s image? BV: When I started with this passion, I was asked the question “Why do you like makeup?”. At first, I didn’t know how to answer that. Slowly but surely, I began to realize makeup can help change a person’s image. With the different looks you can utilize with makeup, anybody can be anything. You can be edgy, sexy, or cute, all depending on how you apply your makeup. It also helps boost your confidence by changing or enhancing your image. Going back to awareness, I believe people are more aware of the importance of image through makeup. So enhancing your image by using makeup is much understandable now. BZ: What is your opinion on the “natural is better” argument? BV: It depends on the person. Personally, I don’t think there’s one definitive look that’s the best. Even when someone applies the “wrong” makeup for an occasion, if they’re confident enough, they can pull it off. It all ties back to image. The more confident you feel, the better you actually look, and vice versa. Fun Fact: If Beverley ever had the chance, she’d like to do makeup for Marion Caunter and Neelofa. Internationally, she’d really like to work with Natalie Portman and Emilia Clarke.

Environmental Image, is it really helping?
G
lobally, there is a trend that has been getting stronger and stronger. The trend is to have a green image. When Breeze shared the theme with us for this month, it got us thinking of what image does the Environmental movement have here in Sabah. Of course, we have a long way to go but thanks to social media, everyone has an opinion on what is green and what is not. Everyone also wants to show their commitment. This is a good thing. The question we are posing to all Breeze readers is what is real out there now?
If you do a search on “Environmental Image”, you may stumble across a term called “Green Washing”. This is when a company or person says they are going green without actually doing it. Take for example a company that uses plastics that can be recycled but in actual fact their product rarely gets recycled. For whatever reason it is not recycled i.e. no recycling plant or no Government program, we as the consumer feel good about using plastic that can be recycled. What we should look for, in the case of plastic, are plastic products actually made from recycled plastic. At least we know a single recycle loop has been achieved. Another example would be the palm oil industry in Sabah. Having “green programs” in the press but discovering a dead elephant every week in local

plantations means something is not right and the program is NOT effective. Once again, we ask you are we “talking the talk but NOT walking the walk”? Here’s another issue we should think about and address. We are ramping up campaigns to reduce the usage of plastic straws and plastic bags but no one is addressing the issue of cigarette butt litter throughout the entire State. This problem is happening on land, in rivers and at sea. We are not saying one is better than the other but it is as equally damaging for our environment and our wildlife. Don’t believe us? The next time you are stopped at a traffic light or junction, look down to see the numerous cigarette butts thrown away from vehicle drivers and passengers. It is shocking! While trying to have an environmental image, we should ask if it means something to us and can we keep doing it daily until the problem is solved? You may think Green and try to act Green but it will all disappear in one weak or a lazy moment when someone with a camera takes a snap shot of you without your eco straw or your eco bag and uploads it on a social media site. Once again, we urge you to Think before you Act. Plan before you move and be responsible for our environment in Sabah and for generations to come.

Rants & Raves
society doesn’t define us dress or present themselves. But that is all based on what you see for a few moments. Your judgement about that person could be bad or good and could be completely wrong. Some people are afraid of what others first impression of them are and therefore put in a lot of effort to make sure that no one sees their bad side. But no matter how you act or dress, there are always people that will judge you. But the truth is, everybody is different. Everybody looks different and acts different. A standard set by society shouldn’t determine whether or not someone’s appearance is beautiful. Everybody is beautiful in their own way and they shouldn’t have to change themselves to fit into a box. We are supposed to be unique. That is what makes us different from everyone else. If we all just follow and look like one thing, what’s the difference between us and robots? We are meant to be different and we shouldn’t care about what society or others think about how we act and how we look. Their opinions shouldn’t matter because the only opinions that should matter is your own. As long as you are happy with the way you look and act, you don’t have to change a single thing.
I
’m sure that everybody is conscious about their own appearance. Some people care about their image or the way they present themselves in public a lot. Some people might not care as much and are comfortable with going out wearing whatever. I think the reason why some people care a lot is because there are standards set on what is a beautiful woman and a handsome man. These standards could cause people to become insecure about their appearance because they don’t look a certain way. Many even try to change the way they look to fit these standards because by fitting into these standards, they feel that they will finally fit into society. Society is also always judging people on how they act in public. The image they portray and are quick to jump to conclusions about what kind of person they are. When you pass by someone on the streets, you immediately judge them just by how they

he tragic news of Kobe Bryant’s passing has left the whole world in shock. Kobe not only left his mark in basketball but became a pop culture icon that a lot of people look up to. It may be difficult for us to move on from this tragedy, but all of us know what Kobe would want us to do. So, instead of dwelling on the sadness, let’s celebrate his career and the lessons Kobe has taught us. Kobe Bean Bryant is a 5x NBA champion, 18x All-Star, 2x Olympic champion, and the list goes on. Above all, he was and still is an NBA legend. Drafted with the 13th pick to the Charlotte Hornets, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on the same night. The Lakers is where he’s spent his whole 20-year career, and what an illustrious career that was. Kobe has influenced many with his relentlessness on the court and hard work off it. Just like how he emulated his game after Michael Jordan, some fans and younger players have done the same with Kobe. However, the intensity he displayed throughout his playing career spawned the phrase “Mamba Mentality”. This

is the constant quest to find answers, the infinite curiosity to become better. It’s this mentality that inspired generations of fans and players to work hard when pursuing success. On his last NBA game ever against the Utah Jazz, his former teammate, Shaquille O’Neal, challenged Kobe to score 50 points. Kobe did one better by scoring 60 points that night, making it a historic night for the NBA. Kobe continued to wow his fans when he won an Oscar for his short film titled “Dear Basketball” in 2018. He set up an academy to pass down his basketball knowledge for the next generation. Kobe also coached his daughter’s basketball team. He has shown great support towards women’s basketball, showing up to WNBA games whenever he can. He was a loving and supportive father, giving his daughter different perspectives to approach the game of basketball. No matter how you remember Kobe, through all the feuds and controversies, it’s hard to deny that Kobe is very special. Not just as a basketball player but also as an individual. All of us can learn a thing or two from him. From his work ethic to his attitude, he is the role model to look up to when it comes to perfecting our craft. With that, let’s try to live our lives as close to how Kobe has lived his.

aving lived here since 2006, Peter Stenberg came to Sabah for his work with a Danish company in the oil and gas industry. He hails from Denmark and now acts as the director of a local company called Rustic Borneo. When Peter started setting up his company, he recalled it being very easy. That’s what he has noticed living in Sabah all these years, the people are very friendly and laid back. He mentioned the convenience of communicating in English as almost everyone speaks the language. From his experiences, Peter also noticed the differences in the local culture when compared to what he’s used to. He realized there are just some things that Sabahans do differently compared to the rest of the world. Peter doesn’t see them as negatives though, because those differences are what make Sabahans unique. Peter feels the way to succeed or happily call Sabah home is to adapt to how things work in Sabah, especially the culture. His wife, Melissa, is a Sino-Kadazan (mixed ethnicity of Chinese and Kadazan), and she has helped him adapt to the cultures around Kota Kinabalu. She is very supportive of Peter.
by Noel Jinguli Image | Peter Stenberg 36
Apart from that, Peter can’t believe how much Kota Kinabalu has developed since he came here. Of course, the downside that came with development is the traffic conditions. However, Peter is seeing many businesses, restaurants, and investments coming in, so it’s also a good thing for the economy. In terms of adventures, Peter enjoys traveling to Sandakan. The wildlife at the Kinabatangan River is nothing like he’s ever seen before. He sees something new every time he’s been there. From orangutans to pythons on tree branches, it reminds him of what he saw on National Geographic. It’s one thing to enjoy living in Sabah, but it’s another thing to witness and embrace changes in culture and development. With that, Peter has truly made himself at home in Sabah.

Restaurant review

ucked away off the Keningau-Tambunan Road, in the small town of Apin-Apin, is Cafe 1952 Apin-Apin — a quaint eatery built inside a building that was constructed before our nation’s independence in what used to be a family-owned sundry shop. When we arrived, we were greeted by the vibrant owner, Joyce John Angian, who welcomed the team with her warm smile and personality. Joyce and her husband have been in the food and beverage industry since their university years in the States. When they returned to Sabah together with her brother, they opened the first fusion restaurant in Asia City, Bayu Bistro, and later a second venture in Lintas. Seeing an opportunity to serve the burgeoning tourists in ApinApin, they felt it was an opportune time to introduce their speciality in fusion cuisine to the town, while at the same time embracing the history and heritage of the location. Hence, in September 2019, Cafe 1952 Apin-Apin came to be — strategically located opposite the Apin-Apin Saturday Tamu, and nestled close by to at least four hiker-friendly hills. The front of the cafe boasts fresh white walls and ceiling — pulling inspiration from English-style interiors. The cashier

counter and display areas carry a wide variety of historical knick knacks including vintage pots, China, weighing scale, typewriter, telephone, and one of a kind memorabilias from days of past sourced from her family’s personal collection. Joyce also plans to make Cafe 1952 a platform to empower the youths in the community where the local youths — starting with her Community-Based Leo Club Koningau Centennial members — can come and showcase their talents during the weekends. The menu, adorned with the native Dusun Gana linangkit, is simple and concise. The selection is a fusion of local dishes as well as flavours influenced by English and Japanese cuisines. The ingredients are locally sourced except for the beef, which is imported to ensure that customers are only served the best quality food yet at an affordable price point. This attention to quality and maintaining a standardized food prep is one of the things that sets this eatery apart from its peers. Our team had the privilege to enjoy some of their best selling items on the menu starting with the Cafe 1952 Nasi Lemak Special which came with a bed of fragrant rice, chicken, fried egg, crispy anchovies and a side of their very own family recipe sweet sambal. It’s a simple kid-friendly dish with a beautiful balance of sweet and savoury.
Next we tried the Apin-Apin Beef Noodle Soup, which we were told, drew inspiration from the Vietnamese pho dish. The dish was served with a side of mint, bean sprouts and calamansi. The beef was tender, generously portioned, served with beef balls and mee hoon. The broth, from the same cooked broth as the gearbox dish, has a mild flavour that is not overpowering, allowing for customers to customize the flavours to appease their taste buds. If you’re a beef lover, the 1952 British Gearbox is definitely up your alley. The gearbox we were served was enormous! The meat was falling off the bone, coupled with the flavourful broth, was simply delicious. Best eaten hot, customers can also drink through the bone marrow with the bamboo straws provided. We also sampled the Okonomiyaki Pizza with chicken and beef fillings. The pizza is more akin to a pancake foldover than the conventional pizza and is served with a drizzle of nacho cheese and mayonnaise, a side of shoestring fries, sauteed tomatoes and fresh coleslaw.

Off the menu, Cafe 1952 also serves their homegrown lemongrass and local lemon beverage that is delicious and refreshing especially on hot days. This writer even added a sprig of mint, meant for the beef noodle soup, to up the cooling level. If you love lemonade, definitely give this drink a try. Dessert was a homemade cheesecake baked by Joyce’s sister and served with a shot of Naga Tapai’s Kopi Tapai which was additional for us. The cheesecake was a huge hit with the team! The texture was quite unique and light with a sponge cheese base and a top layer of cheesecake that was slightly more dense yet moist, similar to a steamed cake, with just the right amount of cheesy goodness. Yum! This writer and the team thoroughly enjoyed this foodgasmic experience. It’s no wonder that their customers come from near and far to enjoy this fusion cafe’s food. We were told that in the evening, the ambiance is quiet, relaxing and romantic. If you’re in the area or road tripping nearby, do make a pitstop to experience the hidden treasure of Apin-Apin.
