development of sites by mid-June. The due date for the proposals and review is late July to early August. In August and September, discussions of the proposals and interviews will be scheduled. Contracts are estimated by the end of the year.
The project began in August 2024 when an interlocal agreement was made between the South Cape Community Redevelopment Agency and the city.
The approval of the resolution by Council, which also sits as the CRA governing board, provided for the purchase of properties in the eastern portion of the
CRA’s Bimini Basin District. The purchase agreement with Bimini Centre of Cape Coral, LLC and TCJBM, LLC was for $40,089,504. Two months later, in October, the city closed on the original properties.
Many of the individual sites are on Triton Court where developed parcels include duplex and five-plex units with an eight-unit building on Manor Court.
The total price for all properties is $43,221,771.08.

Big rigs, police vehicles and more trucks by the score could be seen lined up and down Lafayette Street between Del Prado Boulevard and Vincennes Street in Cape Coral Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event’s goal was to raise awareness about a genetic disorder, bring the community together and give children an opportunity to explore some of their favorite trucks. Cape Coral Fire Rescue’s fire truck, Lee County Emergency Medical’s ambulance and Cape Coral Police’s BMW motorcycles were just some of the vehicle attendees were able to view.
Steve and Fran Marsino, co-founders of the event, explained how Touch A Truck came to be.
Their grandson was diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome in 2013 and they decided to start Touch a Truck two years later, Steve Marsino said, adding they then founded the EHL Fragile X Foundation, incorporating their grandson’s initials.
“We wanted to start the foundation to raise awareness and help those with the syndrome,” he said.
One in every 4,000 kids has Fragile X syndrome, and the desire to raise awareness inspired the couple to host the free-admission event, which also is a fundraiser.
Saturday’s event in the South Cape featured live entertainment, safety exhibits and participants received a truck passport with destinations to visit for a chance to win a prize.

The commission is impaneled, at the minimum, every
six years.
Council members individually scored the applicants and those who received the lowest numbers “based similar to golf scoring” were selected to be interviewed.
The 12 applicants being considered include Edwin Estes, Donald Apking, Vincent Cautero, Andrew James Sund, Liza King, Kevin McGrail, Dewayne Moore, Mason Sheppard, Dusty Shelton, Richard Leon, Rendolyn Amaker and Judith Thomas-Fernandez.

34th annual India Fest celebrated at JetBlue Park
By JOHNATHAN MINEHAN news@breezenewspapers.com
JetBlue Park typically fills its stands with Red Sox fans but on Saturday, India Fest brought a crowd interested in the diverse cultural experience attendees experienced.
From newcomers to those who each year await the opportunity to experience Indian culture, traditional dances and new cuisines, attendees turned out to enjoy the festival.
President of the India Association of Fort Myers Nithya Sharma shared what made the festival possible and what it means to the community.
“The impact has been phenomenal. This is the 34th year this festival has been going on, and the effect in the community, we bring culture and community,” Sharma said. “We are all home away from home; it is our way of getting involved, giving back, and being a part of the community.”
Sharma has been president of the association since 2024 and is closing out her term with the festival.
Getting vendors together, performers ready and arranging proper seating for visitors took a lot of effort for Sharma and her team.
“A lot of hard work and a lot of sleepless nights, a lot of passion and a lot of creativity, a lot of hard work, and it shows because the turnout is phenomenal, and we cannot be more happy,” said Sharma.
Twenty-eight vendors and 40 sponsors made this year’s festival possible.
One of those vendors, Kanika Batra, talked about her company, Sukoon, a woman-owned handcrafted brass and marble Hindu deities seller, and how the brand honors culture and design.
“Sukoon is about honoring and celebrating Indian heritage through art, design and storytelling, which you can see at our booth,” said Batra.
The company’s name, Sukoon, means several things: peace, serenity, tranquility and inner calm.
“People from all walks of life, many searching for mindfulness, spirituality, or just meaningful design, have found a connection to Sukoon. In today’s fast-moving world, I think we are all craving a little more peace, a little more grounding, and a little more sukoon,” said Batra.
The company’s story comes from Batra’s vision for her family and people within the community.
“As a mom, I often think about how I can pass down the culture and values I grew up with to my children. So it became my way of doing that, not just for my family but for so many others who want to stay connected to them even though they are embracing the life they are living right now,” said Batra.
India is more than 8,000 miles away and for many wanting to feel connected to home, this festival gave them a chance to do so.
Batra had one last message for the attendees and those looking to check out Sukoon.
“Our vision is simple: to bring the soul of Indian spirituality and culture into homes worldwide.”

Part of the cultural program at this year’s India Fest included cultural dances for the crowd to enjoy.
The India Association of Fort Myers was founded in 1987 and has spent 37 years supporting charities, including Meals of Hope, the Sehgal Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity.
Harleen Sethi, director of events for the Indian Association of Fort Myers, shared what involvement with the association and India festival has been like.
“It has been amazing. We have great teamwork and a lot of ideas here,” said Sethi.
When asked, Sethi couldn’t just pick one thing for her favorite at the event — she loves it all.
India Fest isn’t the only event the association holds. Others include Mother’s Day and India Independence Day.
“The food, people, and passion, as well as how it all comes together for a day of celebration and culture, bring our community together. We need more of this,” Sharma said.
For those looking to check out the event and others like it in the future, Sharma encourages the community to try it and indulge in the culture.
“Please come be a part of India Fest. If you missed it this year, you will have to wait until next year. There will be shopping opportunities, henna on your hands, and all types of services,” said Sharma.
These events are for everyone to enjoy — from families to younger and older generations, everyone is always welcome.
“There are amazing performances by the youth and the adults in the community, and there is going to be a lot and something for everyone at the Indian fest,” said Sharma.
City hosting burrowing owl habitat dedication ceremony April 18
The City of Cape Coral invites the community to a Burrowing Owl Habitat Dedication Ceremony at 601 N.W. 4th Ave., Friday, April 18, at 9 a.m. This event celebrates the successful purchase and preservation of land for burrowing owl habitats.
This initiative, funded by a $900,000 grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, marks a historic step in protecting Florida’s largest population of burrowing owls. The grant covered property acquisitions, appraisals, surveys, and initial maintenance. The city has also part-
nered with Big Waters Land Trust to ensure the protection of these habitats.
A sign will be unveiled during the ceremony to mark the newly preserved lots as safe havens for burrowing owls. With over 2,500 burrows in Cape Coral, these efforts support a vital part of the local ecosystem and demonstrate the city’s commitment to wildlife conservation.
The city has worked closely with Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife to maintain and monitor these habitats. Residents and wildlife enthusiasts are encouraged to attend this celebration of conservation success.

Cape Coral Breeze SporTS ‘Pin Patrol’
Legion Post 90 to provide bowling treat for children of first responders in city
By CJ HADDAD
cjhaddad@breezenewspapers.com
American Legion Post 90 is offering a free trip to the lanes for children of Cape Coral first responders.
The first “Pin Patrol” bowling party takes place Saturday, April 26, from noon to 2 p.m., at Bowlero Midpoint, where children ages 6-12 can enjoy a few hours of bowling and some fun in the arcade courtesy of Post 90.
“With first responders doing what they do for the community and individuals, we wanted to thank them somehow,” said American Legion Post 90 Children’s Youth Committee Co-Chair Tammy Gillhouse. “We thought we could start off by helping their children have some fun with a free day of bowling and pizza.”
The event will include team/cheer captains on each lane rooting on the bowlers. Post 90 will also provide coloring books and game tokens for the arcade.”
Children of personnel with the Cape Coral Police Department, Cape Coral Fire Department and those members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office that live in Cape Coral are eligible.
American Legion Post 90 will have members and officers attend with a table of information to share and distribute for families that attend. Oftentimes officers and firefighters were once veterans themselves.
Overall, the afternoon is a show of gratitude to the families of those that put their lives on the line every day to protect the community.
“Our first responders do a lot, especially during hurricane season, and on a daily basis,” Gillhouse said. “A lot of people are not appreciative of their efforts and dedication. I’ve seen firsthand how it’s a very thankless job. We just wanted to really thank them from veterans. A lot of fire and police departments are former military -- so that’s another aspect of why we want to do something for them. Having the kids have a few hours of fun on us would be a great way to show our support.
“We’re so excited to meet a lot of first responders and help the kids hone in on some of their bowling talents and have some fun.”
There are 25 spots open for youth, with spots filling up. A parent must attend the event with their child. Post 90 is hoping to continue this event in the future.
Next Play Flag Football Training for local youth May 5-9 a Storm Football Complex
By CJ HADDAD cjhaddad@breezenewspapers.com
Local youth looking to pick up some football skills and learn the basics of the game can sign up for a training program put on by a group of coaches.
Next Play Flag Football Training is hosting a session for boys and girls ages 9 to 12 from May 5-9 at the Storm Football Complex in Cape Coral.
With the simple mission of helping youth “to get better,” Next Play is putting on this session for players, both beginners and seasoned, to help them improve their skills, gain confidence and grow as athletes and individuals.
“We’ve been talking about having a program that develops skills and training for the kids to go alongside the city program,” said Next Play owner Zach Overcashier. “We’re finally making it happen. We’d like to have this in May, and also in January. It’s to specialize and focus on those things that we’re not able to take time for during the regular season of leagues. It’s geared towards the kids and the age groups they’re in, and also develops sportsmanship. For us, that’s one of the most important things at this level. If we can teach them character

development, they can carry it into life as well.”
Overcashier praised the city’s flag football program, but said the training is a way to teach the game to young players with more attention to detail.
Next Play is designed to help kids overcome failures and mistakes, and while learning from it, move on to the next play.

“We thought it was a fitting name,” said Overcashier, who plays adult flag football and has been volunteering with the city for four years.
Each training session runs from 6-8:15 p.m., with five coaches present to teach children about the game.
Sessions will include an introduction to the game, skills and drills, offensive and defensive positioning, mini games, passing and catching, scrimmages and awards.
“It’s knowing what clicks for the kids and how they can succeed,” Overcashier said. “Everyone has a different experience and different performance levels. Just being able to try and put together an all-encompassing program that can help all of the kids is what it’s designed around.”

LARC’s ‘Aiming for Ability’ clay shooting event May 2
The Lee Association for Remarkable Citizens, a nonprofit organization devoted to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has announced the seventh annual “Aiming for Ability” Clay Shooting Tournament will be held Friday, May 2, outdoors at Sarasota Trap Skeet & Clays, 3445 Rustic Road in Nokomis.
All proceeds from the tournament will go directly to support LARC’s vital programs and services. Last year’s tournament raised $30,000.
Registration is at 8:45 a.m., fol-
lowed by a mandatory safety briefing at 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., participants will set off to test their aim.
The entry fee is $200 per person which includes lunch, ear protection, 100 targets, four boxes of ammunition and a golf cart.
To secure a spot or for sponsorship options, visit www.larcleecounty.org, or contact Angela Katz at 239-334-6285, x 210, or angelakatz@larcleecounty.org.able for an additional fee.
Awards for the first, second and third place teams will be presented.
Kids will have the opportunity to earn awards for their skills as well as their attitude and behavior. At Next Play, winning isn’t the primary goal—it’s a result of working toward a true mission. Next Play emphasizes sportsmanship, integrity and respect for others, ensuring these values are a core part of the experience.
For a sport that’s growing in popularity and will debut at the Olympics, flag football is a great way to get introduced to the sport, without a lot of the injury risk that goes along with the full-contact iteration.
“There’s a lot of kids already playing for that sole purpose,” Overcashier said. “Parents want kids to be able to get the skill set and foundation without the concussions or broken bones and bruises and swelling and hardship on your body.”
Registration for the session is currently open, and is $110 for the week. For more information and to register, visit https:// nextplay.ticketspice.com/next-play-flagfootball-camp-ages-9-12.

n Special Populations Summer Camp - These weekly camps are offered for children of all abilities (ages 13 - 22). Each day has planned activities, including many
fun trips throughout the week. Campers will work on recreational skills and develop social connections while building relationships and life experiences.
Mullen said partnerships play a crucial role in the success of these camps.
“Collaborations with organizations like the School District of Lee County -- which provides some meals -- and local community groups enhance the quality and accessibility of programs, including SMART, environmental, athletics, and arts,” she
said.
City officials said summer camp spots will likely fill quickly, and payments must be made during registration to reserve camp placement. No early registrations will be accepted.
As for why Cape Coral camps are a great option for parents this summer, Mullen said, “Parents are encouraged to enroll their children in these camps because they offer safe, affordable and engaging environments where kids can learn new skills,
make friends and stay active during the summer. With diverse themes and activities tailored to various interests, children can explore their passions while building confidence and independence. Additionally, many camps include meals and extended hours for convenience.”
