CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS
FROM SOUTH AFRICA,
LESOTHO & MALAWI
Southern Africa is on the brink of a pivotal moment, where creativity and entrepreneurial spirit are the driving forces behind economic growth and social transformation.
The Création Africa programme is a vital initiative in this movement, fostering innovative minds and empowering entrepreneurs from South Africa, Malawi, and Lesotho. As we celebrate the success of the twelve entrepreneurs who have emerged from this programme, we recognise their role in shaping the future of the region’s cultural industries.
These individuals are more than business owners, they are visionaries who embody the potential of Southern Africa’s creative economy. Their enterprises, rooted in rich cultural heritage, offer both economic value and social cohesion. The impact of their work extends beyond borders, showcasing the ability of Southern African entrepreneurs to compete and thrive in global markets.
Through Création Africa, these entrepreneurs have been equipped with the necessary tools, networks, and knowledge to elevate their ventures.
The support France has offered to this programme demonstrates our commitment to nurturing entrepreneurship in Southern Africa. However, this support goes beyond providing resources; it is about forging sustainable partnerships that promote innovation, resilience, and shared prosperity.
The creative economy, with its vast potential, is an engine for inclusive growth. By supporting these entrepreneurs, we are investing in the long-term success of the region. France remains a steadfast partner in this journey, committed to ensuring that the cultural industries of Southern Africa continue to flourish and that their stories and innovations gain the recognition they deserve on the global stage. This is the future we envision - a future shaped by creativity, collaboration, and sustainable development.
His Excellency David Martinon Ambassador of France to South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi
Création Africa: Vision and Objectives
Création Africa is a pioneering initiative launched by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.
The Création Africa programme aims to support creative entrepreneurship in Africa, specifically in South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi. It focuses on the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs), including sectors such as fashion, design, film, music, and gaming.
This ambitious programme aims to nurture and empower cultural and creative entrepreneurs, and to stimulate innovation and sustainable growth within the CCIs. By fostering entrepreneurship and enhancing skills, Création Africa seeks to build a dynamic ecosystem where creativity can thrive, and these industries can fulfil their potential as economic drivers. The programme seeks to champion growth and sustainability, equipping entrepreneurs with critical business strategy, marketing, and financial management skills to enhance their sustainability and scalability.
Using international collaboration to foster partnerships between local cultural and creative entrepreneurs and their international counterparts, Création Africa hopes to promote knowledge-sharing and create collaborative opportunities with France.
Market integration and access to funding and investment opportunities open doors for entrepreneurs to international markets, helping entrepreneurs connect with global investors, participate in international forums, and explore new business opportunities.
Job creation and social empowerment are crucial to social and economic empowerment. Nurturing creative enterprises that contribute to cultural preservation and economic resilience is central to the programme’s mission. Additionally, by providing long-term support, Création Africa hopes to build a lasting network of creative entrepreneurs who can continue to collaborate, innovate, and grow beyond the programme’s parameters.

A WORD FROM our mentors
Emilie Gambade (Johannesburg, South Africa) – Multimedia journalist | Editor Maverick
Life at Daily Maverick: One key highlight from my mentorship of Julian Kubel has been witnessing the remarkable breadth of his creative thinking. Our sessions have evolved into dynamic, collaborative exchanges where ideas flow freely, sparking new perspectives (often for both of us!)
Sandrine Fanchette (Cape Town, South Africa) – General Manager/Co-owner at Roche Bobois
The Ananta Design Studio worked a lot during this period. I think they realised that they need to diversify their sources of income with various lines of products but also to work on their strengths.
Loïc Manglou (Saint-Denis, Réunion Island) - Président Blue Ramen Studios, Co-Founder of Rubika Réunion, Co-Founder of Collectif Bouftang
Kushal is part of this new wave of young leaders, proud of their heritage and culture, who are dynamically shaping the future of the video game industry in their region. Working as a mentor with Kushal has been a true pleasure and an honour.
Alexia Walker (Johannesburg, South Africa) – Founder of Walker Art and Independent Art Advisor
It was a pleasure to mentor such a multi-talented, young entrepreneur in the luxury fashion industry. Thebe Magugu has achieved recognition and success among the international fashion establishment with a truly African brand.
Empowering creative industry entrepreneurs: Highlights from Création Africa Days
The Création Africa Days event, hosted by the French Embassy of South Africa and the French Institute of South Africa in partnership with UVU Africa, took place on 17 September at the French Residence in Pretoria and 18 September at Keyes Art Mile in Johannesburg.
This two-day event brought together twelve finalists from South Africa, Lesotho, and Malawi, marking the end of an intensive mentorship and incubation programme. The finalists, who received grants ranging from €30,000 to €50,000, showcased the significant strides made in scaling their creative ventures. Their work, spanning industries such as fashion, design, gaming, audiovisual production, and music, was the event’s highlight.
Day one at the French Residence in Pretoria saw the entrepreneurs pitching their ventures to an audience of investors, venture capitalists, business leaders, and representatives from banks and business development agencies. A networking session followed, where guests could engage with the finalists at their exhibition stands and foster potential partnerships and collaborations. The day concluded with a celebratory event, with South African actress, writer, and poet Lebogang Mashile as the master of ceremonies. The keynote address, delivered by Lesley Donna Williams, highlighted the challenges within South Africa’s creative industries. The evening culminated with the Ambassador of France to South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi, HE David Martinon and Lara Rosmarin, Head of UVU Accelerate, presenting the twelve finalists with a certificate of completion.
On 18 September, the focus shifted to Johannesburg, where the entrepreneurs participated in networking sessions with programme partners and key players in the local cultural and creative industries. A roundtable discussion and cocktail reception at Keyes Art Mile, moderated by
journalist Michelle Constant, concluded the event, offering further opportunities for collaboration and media engagement.
Création Africa Days celebrated the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit and creative potential of Southern Africa, providing a vital platform for emerging innovators to connect with influential investors, partners, and the media, positioning them for future growth and international success.
A tailored programme: Shaping the future of cultural entrepreneurs
The incubation programme for the twelve selected entrepreneurs from Création Africa was designed to support their entrepreneurial journey in the cultural and creative industries (CCI). The programme integrates various components to enhance their business knowledge, financial skills, and sector-specific expertise. It includes the following key elements:
The incubation programme sought to enhance participants’ business and financial knowledge by providing targeted training and personalised support to improve the entrepreneurs understanding of business fundamentals and financial management skills.
Furthermore, the programme sought to help entrepreneurs develop their market strategy by teaching them to define their target market, position their product or service, and establish a robust strategy for market entry. One of the main goals of the
programme was to help participants identify opportunities to improve sales strategies, allowing them to implement tactics to boost sales and profitability, ensuring sustainable business growth. Additionally, the incubation programme aimed to foster a culture of experimentation and calculated risk-taking, encouraging entrepreneurs to innovate and find creative solutions to business challenges.
As part of the Création Africa programme, eight open masterclasses were hosted during the incubation period to boost (CCI)
in the region. These sessions were essential in providing the twelve selected entrepreneurs with targeted knowledge and expertise in key areas of business and the CCI sector. Led by industry experts from South Africa and France, the masterclasses covered sector-specific topics and equipped entrepreneurs with the necessary skills to scale their businesses and navigate the challenges of their respective industries.
These experts included Avril Joffe (UNESCO Chair in Cultural Entrepreneurship and Policy at Wits School of Arts), Juliet Kavishe (Vice President of the International Council of Design), Dr Erica de Greef (Co-Founder of the African Fashion Research Institute (AFRI)), Alexia Walker (Founder of Walker Art and Independent Art Advisor), Nadine Gonzales (Director of Casa 93 & Founder of ModaFusion Association), Thierry Cassuto (Founder & Executive Producer at Both Worlds Pictures), Emilie Gambade (Head of Multimedia & Editor at Maverick Life) and Loïc Manglou (CEO of Blue Ramen & Co-Founder of Rubika Réunion).
Not only were these valuable sessions accessible to the twelve projects, they are also available to the broader region, focusing on entrepreneurs in the CCI sector. The masterclasses are accessible via a live stream on the IQOQO platform and remain available for viewing.

GIYA: Showcasing a rich African cultural heritage
Johannesburg-based luxury furniture brand GIYA blends African heritage with modern design, creating sustainable, timeless pieces that celebrate creativity, culture, and craftsmanship.
“The creative and cultural sectors of our economy matter because they invest in the very essence of what makes us human: our ability to create, dream, and tell unique stories. A set of distinctive qualities that creative and cultural businesses channel to build a heritage and foster growth.”
So say co-founders Giyani Mashimbye and Cassandra Twala, whose luxury furniture brand, GIYA, is nestled at the intersection between traditional African design and contemporary aesthetics. This results in timeless products that infuse modern comfort with a rich history.
The immediate goal of these Johannesburg-based entrepreneurs is to establish GIYA as an inspiring and sustainable brand in South Africa. In time, they aspire to take GIYA to international markets to promote African design and craftsmanship globally. “The Création Africa experience has been invaluable in refining our brand strategy to position us to thrive,” says Mashimbye.
DESIGN | JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA
“African design has an exciting story to tell the world, and furniture is a wonderful medium to sustainably create timeless heirlooms that represent who we are as Africans: our design talent, our stories, and our relationship with nature and the environment. We’re out to close the gap between heritage and modern luxury through exquisitely crafted and culturally rich pieces,” Twala adds.
Twala and Mashimbye are passionate about working in a field that enables them to create a space for tangible opportunities to enable other craftspeople and entrepreneurs. This passion is also reflected in their creations, as seen in the furniture pieces that emerge from their design table and studio.
Sustainability is at the heart of the GIYA ethos, seamlessly integrating their creations with nature and guiding their operational practices. GIYA is poised to make a significant impact through strategic partnerships with established manufacturers and distributors. This summer, the brand will debut its inaugural collection in Johannesburg, showcasing three
uniquely designed chairs that embody their commitment to craftsmanship and environmental consciousness.
“This is not just furniture – it celebrates creativity, cultural heritage, and sustainability; it creates jobs and a future for many; and it tells Africa’s story.
“It’s about a lasting legacy and taking African design to the world,” Twala concludes.

Kwacha Creative Studios: Serving the film industry and the communit y
Malawi-based Kwacha Creative Studios has overcome significant challenges to establish a diverse portfolio of offerings – all in the hopes of decreasing youth employment in the country.
Chimwemwe
Mkwezalamba and Rafik
Seleman, the resilient and dynamic duo behind Kwacha Creative Studios, have been steadfastly tackling youth unemployment in Malawi through the power of filmmaking for over four years.
Inspired by the success of the global film industry, this film production and distribution company ambitiously showcases Malawi’s unique and diverse stories and brands. Kwacha produces feature films, TV series, documentaries, and creative advertising campaigns. The studio further diversifies its offering by providing equipment and crew hire services for international film productions in Malawi. “We noticed the gap in the market for highproduction-value content coming from Malawi and wanted to fill that gap whilst providing positive impacts for our local communities,” says Seleman. “This is what inspired us to establish our company with a three-pronged approach: produce high-quality content, showcase our culture and local brands on a global scale, and create jobs and trade opportunities.”
Within the growing African film and television industry, Kwacha Creative Studios specialises in production services, producing content for streaming channels, nature and wildlife organisations, corporate/ philanthropic clients, and other production houses.
Despite these challenges, Mkwezalamba and Seleman have remained focused on expanding the studio and sharing captivating Malawian content with a wider audience. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, with the studio winning the Best Emerging Director award at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival for their short film, The Designer.
Filmmaking is Mkwezalamba’s calling. She understands its power as a means of communication and for igniting positive social and economic change, especially amongst the youth of Malawi. She believes that the cultural and creative industries are vital to the socio-economics of her country, celebrating diversity and promoting cultural exchange, driving tourism and employment in a way unlike any other sector in the country. Mkwezalamba and Seleman’s vision
for the studio is for it to achieve commercial success while simultaneously propelling Malawi’s economic growth and establishing the country’s cultural and creative industries as formidable forces to be recognised on the global stage. Reflecting on their journey thus far with the Création Africa programme, Mkwezalamba shares:
“The Création Africa experience has been transformative, providing invaluable knowledge, encouragement and insights that have elevated our business. We’ve gained a deeper understanding of the cultural and creative industries, and have established a network of like-minded entrepreneurs.”

Renaissance Design: A mouthpiece to the ancient world
Designer and entrepreneur Glorinah Mabaso’s Rennaissance Design uses modern design practices to preserve and propagate the cultural heritage of African design in South Africa.
DESIGN
Glorinah Mabaso defines Renaissance Design as a purpose-driven brand born purely from a sense of duty to preserve the heritage and indigenous knowledge of ancient Africa, its kingdoms and civilisations.
“This was my inspiration,” says Mabaso, the Tshwanebased business owner. “Now that I am a confirmed entrepreneur, I am fully and deeply invested in managing the convergence of my two greatest passions: African history and design. I see myself as a mouthpiece to the ancient world: a city girl with a rural heart.”
Renaissance Design is a pan-African, multidisciplinary creative agency specialising in pattern design inspired by the essence of ancient Africa.
Mabaso creates bespoke and beautiful pieces for modern living by applying her pattern design skills to various disciplines. She extends her business services to interior, fashion, product design, and custom design for corporate and hospitality brands.
During Renaissance Design’s first five years in the market, Mabaso has won several prizes and engaged in successful collaborations. The team has created patterns for South African-born Nando’s restaurants, a capsule collection for clothing and lifestyle brand Trenery, and a custom print for Flame Studios, a music recording studio based at Constitution Hill – a cultural hub in Johannesburg and home to South Africa’s constitution.
Mabaso says she has thoroughly enjoyed her Création Africa experience and is especially excited about scaling up her business and connecting with a global network and community of creatives.
“My Création Africa experience has been enlightening and is opening doors for me and all twelve laureates,” she says.

SourceCode Motion Pictures brings movie magic to Lesotho
SourceCode Motion Pictures brings authentic African stories to life across various mediums through their innovative 3D animations and visual effects.
In the heart of Lesotho’s emerging creative scene, young entrepreneur Katleho Monyako is making a bold impression, setting himself apart as a rising talent to watch. Monyako founded SourceCode Motion Pictures, a visual effects company based in Maseru, Lesotho.
He has made it his mission to preserve and promote African culture by leveraging the power of 3D animation and visual effects (VFX) to tell compelling and immersive stories about life on the continent. The company focuses on film production,
web series, TV shows, and ad campaigns. Monyako’s passion for innovative visual storytelling was sparked at a young age and is driven by his deep fascination with global productions. “I’ve always been fascinated by Hollywood movie magic,” he says.
“It was amazing to see how impossible worlds and actions were brought to life using technology like 3D animation and VFX. I started learning to create my visual effects at 14 and fell in love with the art.”
Monyako founded SourceCode Motion Pictures to address the shortage of high-quality visual effects in Lesotho’s movies and television shows while promoting original African content with rich cultural narratives. However, building the business hasn’t been easy – Monyako has had to overcome obstacles such as limited access to cutting-edge technology, a scarcity of skilled talent, and inadequate infrastructure.
What I’ve found most useful about the Création Africa experience so far is all the valuable information and business insights about the creative industry. I’ve also enjoyed interacting with other founders who are building their businesses and learning from them, as well as seeing the different businesses within the creative industry and how they work together.”
– Katleho Monyako
“I believe in the power of the creative and cultural sectors to create jobs, drive innovation and foster a strong sense of cultural identity. Yet it can be quite difficult to navigate the industry successfully and compete at the highest level,” he says.
Through his participation in the Création Africa programme, Monyako aims to scale up his business, gain access to new markets, and improve the company’s sustainability practices.
“What I’ve found most valuable about the Création Africa experience so far is the wealth of information and business insights about the creative industry. I also enjoy learning from other cultural entrepreneurs and seeing how different businesses within the creative industries can work together,” he says about his journey in the programme.

SpaceSalad Studios:
Bringing their ‘A’ game to South Africa’s gaming industry
This proudly South African, awardwinning studio strives to use gaming as a vehicle for education, improving the lives of players and their communities.
Thabo Tsolo’s love for gaming wasn’t the only inspiration behind the creation of SpaceSalad Studios. The game designer and 3D animator has always wanted to harness the energy and time that players invest into making a positive impact. The result was an independent and award-winning game development studio based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
SpaceSalad Studios’ core mission is to create fun and educational games that impact players’ lives and create value in the community.
“We want to impact gamers beyond just entertainment; we would like to offer them games that blend information with entertainment – so players can engage with social topics and have that political awareness,” says Tsolo.
Central to their mission is making the gaming industry accessible to young Black children, inspiring the next generation of game developers. Initially conducting workshops in local neighbourhoods and townships, they introduced children to game development and industry possibilities. Although workshop frequency has slowed, they maintain community engagement through social media, showcasing their achievements and exemplifying Black excellence in gaming.
Over SpaceSalad Studios’ five years in the industry, Tsolo and his team have developed a portfolio that boasts eight award-winning games and a remarkable collaboration with renowned South African satirist Zapiro. Their journey hasn’t been without challenges. Limited access to funding, resources, and opportunities crucial for growth and innovation in the gaming industry have driven Space Salad Studios to become resourceful in their path to success.
“What I’ve found especially useful is the networking opportunities with my peers – fostering a strong sense of community,” says Tsolo of his Création Africa experience thus far. “Dedicated sessions with mentors have also been invaluable, providing insights and guidance shaping my professional journey.”

Upcycling with purpose: Tendalo Trading’s innovative approach to fashion and sustainability
Xolile Mabuza is the epitome of resilient, creative entrepreneurship. A resident of Mbombela in South Africa’s Mpumalanaga Province, Mabuza founded Tendalo Trading to repurpose old rubber tubes from car, truck, and tractor tyres into eco-friendly, durable, and stylish bags.
Mabuza began her journey in business through a personal connection to her work, finding catharsis in the recycling process by honouring her late grandmother, who was a talented seamstress.
“I love being in this business because recycling and upcycling rubber tubes is healing to me. Washing rubber tubes feels like cleansing my soul, and sewing them together feels like sewing all the broken pieces in me back together,” she says.
Through her work, Mabuza also finds joy in her contribution to a bigger purpose – promoting responsible consumption and encouraging climate consciousness. She takes great pride in providing training and creating job opportunities for the youth, particularly young women in her community. She believes in the power of cultural and creative industries to showcase creativity and explore culture, all while supporting those around her.
Her journey through entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy. Setting up the business, acquiring the correct equipment and securing her initial sales were some of the challenges Mabuza faced as a new business owner.
“Through the Création Africa programme, I got to learn the fundamentals about running a successful business. I’m excited about the opportunity to grow my brand visibility, collaborate and upscale my business,” she says.

Terry Made Designs:
Redefining luxury and sustainable fashion in Malawi
Blantyre-based designer Terrence Thobani Ngulube is redefining luxury fashion with Terry Made Designs, blending sustainability and style while championing creative entrepreneurship through his innovative clothing brand.
Hailing from Blantyre, Malawi, Terrence Thobani Ngulube is passionate about redefining luxury fashion through his contemporary clothing brand; Terry Made Designs. The brand specialises in ready-to-wear garments, custom clothes, accessories, and professional styling services.
Ngulube’s motivation for bringing life to new design ideas is his desire to create long-lasting memories through garments and to play a significant role in people’s lives through style. However, his business is about more than expressing personal style – it hopes to impact society by repurposing second-hand clothes to minimise the material waste affecting our environment.
Ngulube believes there have been numerous rewards for his efforts. The brand has been showcased at significant local fashion events, such as the Zomba City Festival, and featured in various publications. Nugulube says, “Seeing people’s faces light up when they come for their final fitting makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
Interacting with experts and fellow cultural entrepreneurs in the Création Africa programme has been very helpful in improving the running of my business. I am grateful for the exposure to so many resources to grow at a larger scale.”
– Terrence Thobani Ngulube
Like many creative entrepreneurs, Ngulube faces challenges in business, particularly in financing and administration. As the sole operator, he finds himself wearing two hats: that of a designer and that of a business manager. But his passion for craftsmanship and the broader societal impact of his brand through sustainable fashion keep him driven.
Being a Création Africa finalist has been a game-changer for Ngulube, providing him with the resources and mentorship needed to help elevate his brand. “Interacting with experts and fellow cultural entrepreneurs in the Création Africa programme has been very helpful in improving the running of my business,” he says.
“I am grateful for the exposure to so many resources to grow at a larger scale.”
Beyond his own success, Ngulube sees the broader potential of the creative and cultural sectors. He believes they hold a significant opportunity for job creation, offering young people valuable skills that can provide a decent living while contributing to sustainability and economic growth in their communities.

Thebe Magugu: Using fashion to preserve African narratives
Thebe Magugu, South Africa’s rising fashion visionary, is redefining luxury by weaving African narratives into global fashion, blending artistry with a mission to preserve and honour his culture.
South African fashion designer
Thebe Magugu will soon be a household name. His eponymous luxury fashion brand has garnered the industry’s attention for its ready-towear collections grounded in a duty to educate wearers and admirers alike. Magugu’s work continues to explore parallel concepts of preservation and appreciation for African narratives through multidisciplinary capsule projects.
At its core, Thebe Magugu is driven by a mission to preserve African history and culture by relaying African stories and exhibiting African craftsmanship to the world. This commitment is reflected in the naming of each collection after an educational discipline, such as ‘Alchemy’, ‘African Studies’ or ‘Home Economics’.
“I started my business in 2017 as an afro-encyclopaedic look at key events, people, histories and culture that run the risk of being forgotten but could be immortalised through the power of cloth,” says Magugu. “Our story as Africans has historically been told by other
people, and we wanted to create a brand that authentically tells those stories.”
Over the years, the South African designer has made an impressionable mark on the fashion scene globally. Thebe Magugu won the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) Prize in 2019, engaged in memorable collaborations with Christian Dior, Adidas, and Valentino, and produced several shows at recent Paris Fashion Weeks. As a result, the young creative entrepreneur has been empowered to create jobs, exercise positive change within his own team, and impact the entire fashion value chain.
Now, Magugu’s vision is to continue expanding the brand internationally and further develop his concept, Magugu House: a multifaceted campus in Johannesburg that aims to include artist residencies, workshops, a café, a library, and event hosting – in
addition to his showroom and bespoke art galleries. Recognising its cultural impact, Magugu House was recently named one of TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2024.
For Magugu, the Création Africa incubator programme represents a crucial stepping stone in the brand’s growth. He values the mentorship from industry leaders, financial support and assistance with his business growth. “Strengthening the business side of my cultural and creative enterprise through Création Africa has been incredible,” Magugu notes. “The varied levels of mentorship led me to powerful paradigm shifts and helped me make better decisions about my business to upscale and grow.”
Bringing his creative vision to life is a driving passion for Thebe Magugu. With the support of Création Africa, he is set to continue on his journey of elevating African narratives through fashion, ensuring the continent’s stories and cultures are authentically and beautifully represented.
