In seinem op. 112 fasst Beethoven die Gedichte Meeres Stille und Glückliche Fahrt von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe zusammen. Beide Texte sind schon in der Erstveröffentlichung im Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796 als Paar nebeneinander gestellt; diese Anordnung behielt Goethe in den verschiedenen von ihm später herausgegebenen Werkausgaben bei. Beethoven beschäftigte sich, wie einzelne Skizzen zeigen, schon Ende 1814 mit den Texten. Die Hauptarbeit an dem Chor folgte im Sommer 1815; am 25. Dezember desselben Jahres dirigierte der Komponist die Uraufführung in einem Konzert zugunsten des Wiener Bürgerspitalfonds. Die Veröffentlichung verzögerte sich um einige Jahre, da der Verleger S. A. Steiner das ihm überlassene Manuskript zunächst liegen ließ. Erst 1822 brachte er op. 112 gleichzeitig als Partitur, in Einzelstimmen und als Klavierauszug heraus. Die Originalausgabe ist Goethe gewidmet; auf Veranlassung Beethovens wurde ihr in einer späteren Auflage als Motto ein Zitat aus Homers Odyssee beigefügt.

Die Hauptquelle für den Notentext der BeethovenGesamtausgabe ( Beethoven. Werke, Abteilung X, Band 2, G. Henle Verlag, München 1998) ist eine Partiturabschrift mit zahlreichen Nachträgen und Korrekturen Beethovens, die auch als Stichvorlage für die Originalausgabe diente. Die Originalausgabe der Partitur und die Abschrift eines zwar nicht von Beethoven stammenden, aber von ihm durchgesehenen und verbesserten Klavierauszugs – Stichvorlage für die Originalausgabe des Klavierauszugs – wurden als Nebenquellen herangezogen. Näheres zur Textgestaltung, zur Quellenlage sowie zur Entstehungsgeschichte findet sich im Vorwort und im Kritischen Bericht des erwähnten Bandes der Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe. Der vorliegende Klavierauszug von Carl Reinecke (1824–1910) wurde bezüglich Artikulation und Dynamik an den Notentext der Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe angepasst und an einigen Stellen spieltechnisch vereinfacht.

In his op. 112 Beethoven sets the two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Meeres Stille [calm sea] and Glückliche Fahrt [prosperous voyage]. Both texts appeared side by side when they were first published in the Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796; Goethe retained this association in the various editions of his works which he later edited himself. Several sketches reveal that Beethoven had already begun to take an interest in the poems by the end of 1814. His main work on the chorus fell in the summer of 1815; on 25 December of the same year the composer conducted the première at a benefit concert for the Viennese Citizens’ Hospital Fund. The publication of op. 112 was delayed for several years as the publisher, S. A. Steiner, procrastinated over the manuscript placed at his disposal. He did not issue the work until 1822, when it appeared simultaneously in score, parts, and piano-vocal score. The original publication bore a dedication to Goethe; a later edition contained, at Beethoven’s request, a quotation from Homer’s Odyssey appended as a motto.

The principal source for the music text of the Beethoven Complete Edition (Beethoven. Werke, series X, volume 2, G. Henle Verlag, Munich, 1998) is a copy of the score containing many additions and corrections made by the composer. This copy also served as the Stichvorlage for the original edition. The original edition of the score as well as the copy of a piano reduction which Beethoven did not write, but which he examined and corrected – the engraver’s master for the original edition of the piano reduction – were consulted as secondary sources. Further information on the form of the text, the state of the sources and the genesis of the work can be found in the Preface and the “Kritischer Bericht” of the aforementioned volume of the Beethoven Complete Edition.

In the present piano reduction by Carl Reinecke (1824–1910), the articulation and dynamics were adapted to the music text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and occasionally simplified for performance-technical reasons.

Dans son op. 112 Beethoven regroupe les poèmes de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe intitulés Meeres Stille [calme marin] et Glückliche Fahrt [heureux voyage]. Ces deux textes sont déjà juxtaposés dans la première publication du Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796; Goethe a conservé cette réunion dans les différentes éditions de ses oeuvres, éditées plus tard par ses soins. Comme le font apparaître diverses esquisses, Beethoven s’est occupé des textes dès la fin de l’année 1814; le 25 décembre de la même année, le compositeur a dirigé la création de l’oeuvre, lors d’un concert donné au bénéfice du fonds du Bürgerspital de Vienne. La publication s’est trouvée retardée de quelques années, l’éditeur S. A. Steiner ayant tout d’abord laissé de côté le manuscrit qui lui avait été remis. C’est en 1822 seulement qu’il publie l’op. 112 sous forme simultanément de partition, de parties séparées et de réduction pour piano. L’édition originale est dédiée à Goethe; une édition ultérieure se verra adjoindre comme devise, sur l’initiative du compositeur, une citation de l’ Odyssée d’Homère.

La source principale du texte musical de l’intégrale de Beethoven (Beethoven. Werke, section X,

volume 2, Editions G. Henle, Munich 1998) est une copie manuscrite comportant de nombreux rajouts et corrections de la main de Beethoven qui a servi de modèle au graveur lors de la réalisation de l’édition princeps. L’édition originale de la partition ainsi que la copie d’une réduction pour piano – qui certes n’a pas été écrite par Beethoven, mais a été revue et corrigée par lui et qui a servi de modèle au graveur pour l’édition princeps de la réduction pour piano – ont été reten es comme sources secondaires. De plus amples détails concernant la structure du texte, l’état des sources ainsi que la genèse de l’oeuvre se trouvent dans la préface et dans le rapport critique du volume de l’intégrale de Beethoven mentionné précédemment.

Pour ce qui est de l’articulation et de la dynamique, la présente réduction pour piano de Carl Reinecke (1824–1910) a été adaptée pour le texte musical de l’intégrale de Beethoven et quelque peu simplifiée du point de vue de la difficulté technique d’exécution.
