Anmerkungen des Verlages Seit über 100 Jahren ist die 25-bändige Ausgabe der Klavierwerke von Johann Sebastian Bach unter Federführung von Ferruccio Busoni erhältlich. Inzwischen selbst zu einem historischen Dokument der Bach-Rezeption geworden, wird sie trotz ihres Alters immer noch gerne – auch international – genutzt.

In den Erläuterungen „Zur Edition“ von Dr. Reinhard Ermen ist die wechselvolle Geschichte der Entstehung der Edition in groben Zügen dargestellt. Als eine Folge dieser Entwicklung weisen die Bände unterschiedliche Sprachkombinationen auf, und so erreichten den Verlag immer wieder Anfragen nach fehlenden englischen Übersetzungen.

Aus Anlass des 100. Todestages von Busoni werden diese nun ergänzt. Anmerkungen und Übersetzungen, die nicht in den Notenseiten selbst zu finden sind, liegen den Heften als Einleger bei, sodass sie parallel zum Notentext genutzt werden können.

Die bisher ausschließlich auf Deutsch vorliegenden Texte außerhalb der Noten wurden ebenfalls übersetzt.

Publishing-House Remarks The 25-volume edition of the Johann Sebastian Bach piano works under the aegis of Ferruccio Busoni has been available for over 100 years. Though it has meantime become in itself an historical document of Bach reception, it is still used with pleasure – even internationally – despite its age.

In his notes “About the Edition,” Dr. Reinhard Ermen has briefly outlined its eventful genesis. As a result of this development, the volumes feature various language combinations, and requests for lacking English translations have repeatedly reached the publishing house.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Busoni’s death, these translations are now being added. Annotations and translations not to be found in the music pages themselves are provided as inserts for use in tandem with the music text. The accompanying texts previously available exclusively in German have also been translated.

Zur Edition Am 4. Oktober 1909 schreibt Breitkopf & Härtel an Ferruccio Busoni, um ihn für eine Ausgabe der Klavierwerke Johann ­Sebastian Bachs zu gewinnen. Die Idee, dafür gerade bei ihm anzufragen, lag auf der Hand: Kein anderer hatte sich zu dieser Zeit so intensiv mit Bach beschäftigt. Als Pianist und Bearbeiter, als Theoretiker und Pädagoge war Busoni wesentlich ­daran beteiligt, den Meister vom 19. ins 20. Jahrhundert zu holen, also aus der virtuosen Tradition, deren Höhepunkte er noch selbst gesetzt hatte, in eine Handhabe der geistigen, intellektuellen Herausforderung. Dafür und noch für vieles mehr war ­Busoni längst weltberühmt, außerdem war er seit Anfang der 1880er Jahre ein Komponist, der sich bald sehr eng an das Haus Breitkopf binden sollte, selbstredend auch als Bearbeiter und Herausgeber. In der umfangreichen Korrespondenz mit seinem Verlag, deren mehr als 1550 Briefe seit 2012 gedruckt vorliegen, ist das besagte Anschreiben des Geheimrats Oskar von Hase (damaliger Gesellschafter und Geschäftsführer), die Nummer 500. Basis des Projektes sollte die Bach-Gesamtausgabe sein, die zwischen 1851 und 1899 unter der Federführung der Bachgesellschaft erschienen war – natürlich bei Breitkopf & Härtel. Die Zeichen standen in jeder Weise günstig, hier das Jahrhundertwerk der ersten Gesamtausgabe, bzw. daraus das Konzentrat der Klavierwerke, dort der anerkannte Prophet und Exeget, der den originalen Text mit den Zeichen seiner Praxis beleben sollte.

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), der sich dem ehrenden Auftrag nicht entziehen will, ist um 1909 ein vielgefragter Pianist. Er schreibt gerade an seiner Oper Die Brautwahl und entwickelt darüber hinaus einen wachsenden Ehrgeiz als schaffender Künstler.

Der Rastlose hat eine Familie, außerdem betätigt er sich als Veranstalter und Dirigent einer eigenen Reihe von Orchesterkonzerten mit den Berliner Philharmonikern, für Breitkopf & Härtel arbeitet er intensiv an der kritischen Gesamtausgabe der Werke von Franz Liszt mit. Ziemlich schnell beruft er mit Bruno Mugellini (1871–1912) und Egon Petri (1881–1962) zwei höchst unterschiedliche Mitarbeiter: Der eine, ein italienischer Erneuerer und Theoretiker des Klaviers, ist ein schneller Arbeiter, der lieber am Notentext selbst feilt, also an Tempoangaben, Bögen oder Fingersätzen, während ausführliche Kommentare eher selten zu finden sind. Der andere dagegen, der wichtigste Schüler Busonis und mit diesem seit vielen Jahren vertraut, bewegt sich ganz auf der Linie seines Lehrers. Er schreibt Vorworte und Fußnoten, und nicht nur Verzierungen werden angelegentlich diskutiert, sondern auch Textvarianten und kompositorische Details. Es geht schließlich um eine „instruktive“ Ausgabe, um ein praktisch fundiertes Lehrwerk. In einem Verlagsbrief vom Juli 1910 ist respektvoll-ironisch von einer „Bachhochschule“ die Rede. Ihre „Dozenten“, um im Bild zu bleiben, also die unterschiedlichen Zuträger, charakterisieren die besondere, durchaus abwechslungsreiche Darreichungsform dieser 25 Bände. Zeitgleich mit dem Klavierwerk versammelt Busoni, ebenfalls für Breitkopf, in sieben separaten Bänden seine anderen Bachversuche, und obwohl man diese viel weiter ausgearbeiteten Bearbeitungen und Transkriptionen bis hin zur monumentalen Fantasia Contrapuntistica vom kommentierenden, analysierenden Zugang der instruktiven Ausgabe deutlich trennen kann, sind für ihn selbst die Übergänge fließend. So hat er beispielsweise die Goldbergvariationen, die zwei Teile des Wohltemperierten Klaviers oder die Inventionen in bei-

den Ausgaben veröffentlicht. Möglicherweise denkt er zuallererst an Spielarten von Interpretation schlechthin, im Sinne einer ganz allgemein zu verstehenden Verlebendigung der Musik Bachs, die sich auf der einen Seite durch intensives Hineinhören in die klingenden Triebkräfte, auf der anderen Seite durch das Weiterdenken der gegebenen Angebote realisiert. In beiden Fällen spricht ein Kenner, der vor dem Publikum seine Erfahrungen ausbreitet.

Musikalische Erlebniszeit ist die Gegenwart, Ausblicke in die Zukunft sind nicht ausgeschlossen. Ein historistischer Aspekt, wie er heute fast schon selbstverständlich ist, liegt diesem wohlinformierten Interpreten fern.

Es hat relativ lange gedauert, bis die ersten Bände im Frühjahr 1916 erschienen. Im Januar 1912 starb unerwartet Bruno Mugellini in Bologna, immerhin hatte er bereits sechs Bände vorbereitet.

Die Hauptlast der Herausgabe ging immer mehr auf Egon Petri über, der mit 10 Bänden ein bedeutsames Pensum leistete, sein Vorwort zum sechsten Band, also den Französischen Suiten, ganz im Sinne Busonis geschrieben, darf in gewisser Weise als Credo zu dem gesamten Projekt gelten. Spiritus rector blieb aber bis zum Abschluss Busoni selbst, einmal abgesehen davon, dass in den neun von ihm verantworteten Bänden die entsprechenden Hauptwerke zu finden sind. Der 1. Weltkrieg erschwerte seit August 1914 die Arbeit. Solange Italien neutral blieb, war Busoni in Berlin eine respektierte Persönlichkeit, doch im Mai 1915 erklärte Italien Österreich-Ungarn den Krieg, im August 1916 auch dem Deutschen Reich. Busoni hatte Anfang 1915 freilich eine umfängliche Amerikatournee begonnen, mit dem Gedanken, das Ende des Krieges in der Neuen Welt abzuwarten. Das erwies sich als Illusion, weshalb er sich im Herbst 1915 ins neutrale Zürich zurückzog. Im säbelrasselnden Kaiserreich war er inzwischen eine partiell umstrittene Figur. Dass Breitkopf trotzdem zu ihm stand, spricht für die nach wie vor leuchtende Bachkompetenz, die mit seinem Namen verbunden war, aber auch für Liberalität und Weitsicht des Verlags. Die Korrespondenz Leipzig – New York – Zürich, der Informationsfluss, der ständige Austausch von Korrekturen war gelegentlich mühsam, und schließlich kam es noch zu einer deutlichen Trübung des freundschaftlichen Verhältnisses zu Egon Petri. Häufig fand ein Austausch zwischen Busoni und Petri nur über den Umweg des Lektorats bei Breitkopf & Härtel statt. Und als wäre das noch nicht genug, mussten die Rechte an Busonis Ausgabe des Wohltemperierten Klaviers (Teil 1) beim Verlag Schirmer in New York, wo diese Fassung 1894 erstmals herausgekommen war, umständlich erworben werden. Der Fall erwies sich in Kriegszeiten als so kompliziert, dass bis kurz vor Toresschluss Mugellinis Version, die bereits 1908/09 bei Breitkopf erschienen war und heute noch parallel lieferbar ist, als Band 1 disponiert wurde. Im Juli 1918 schickte Busoni die Stichvorlage für den letzten von ihm bearbeiteten Band 16 an den Verlag, die abschließenden Bände 10 und 25 von Petri erschienen jedoch erst im Mai 1923. Bedenkt man, dass die Inventionen, Busonis erfolgreichste instruktive Ausgabe, erstmals 1891 erschienen, so spiegeln sich in diesem Editionsprojekt mehr als 30 Jahre einer anspruchsvollen Bachrezeption, deren Grundzüge durch ihre reflektierte Evidenz heute noch vorbildlich erscheinen.

About the Edition On 4 Oc­tober 1909 Breitkopf & Härtel wrote to Ferruccio ­Busoni, hoping to gain his support for an edition of Johann ­Sebastian Bach’s piano works. Addressing him, in particular, was an obvious idea, as no one else had dealt at that time so intensively with Bach. As pianist and arranger, as theoretician and pedagogue, Busoni had been crucially involved in summoning the master from the 19th into the 20th century, out of the ­virtuoso tradition, whose apogees Busoni himself had set, into a means of handling the spiritual, intellectual challenge. For this and for much more, Busoni had long been world-famous; from the start of the 1880s, moreover, he had been a composer who was soon to be very closely tied to the Breitkopf house, also, of course, as arranger and editor. In the extensive correspondence with his publishing house, whose more than 1550 letters have been published since 2012, the letter in question from the privy councilor Oskar von Hase (then associate and managing director) is number 500. The project was to be based on the Bach Complete Edition, published between 1851 and 1899 under the auspices of the Bach Society – naturally, by Breitkopf & Härtel.

The signs were in every way favorable: here, the centenary work of the first complete edition, with its focus, in this case, on its ­piano works; there, the recognized prophet and exegete, who was to enliven the original text with the tokens of his praxis.

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), who does not want to shirk the honorific commission, is a much sought-after pianist by 1909.

He is currently composing his opera Die Brautwahl and developing, furthermore, a growing ambition as a creative artist. Indefatigable, he has a family, besides being active as organizer and conductor of his own series of orchestral concerts with the Berlin Phil­harmonic and working intensively for Breitkopf & Härtel on the critical complete edition of the works of Franz Liszt.

He rather quickly appoints two profoundly different assistants, Bruno Mugellini (1871–1912) and Egon Petri (1881–1962): The one, an Italian innovator and theoretician of the piano, is a fast worker, who prefers to work explicitly on the music text itself, thus, on tempo markings, slurs, or fingerings, whereas detailed annotations are rather rarely to be found. The other, by contrast, the most important of Busoni’s piano students and one with whom he has been familiar for many years, completely follows his teacher’s line. He writes prefaces and footnotes, extensively discussing not only ornamentation, but also text variants and compositional details. This is, after all, an “instructive” edition, a sound practical textbook. In a publishing-house letter of July 1910 there is a respectful if ironic mention of a “Bach college.”

Its “lecturers,” thus, the different contributors, characterize the special, indeed varied presentation of these 25 volumes. Concurrently with the piano work, Busoni also assembles his other Bach efforts in seven separate volumes, likewise for Breitkopf.

Although these much more elaborate arrangements and transcriptions, right up to the monumental Fantasia Contrapuntistica, can be clearly separated from the commenting, analyzing approach of the instructive edition, the transitions are fluent for him. He publishes, for example, the Goldberg Variations, the two parts of the Well-Tempered Clavier or the Inventions in both editions. He may possibly think first and foremost of the varieties

of interpretation par excellence, in the sense of a general, fully comprehensible enlivening of Bach’s music, realized, on the one hand, by intensive listening to the sounding driving forces, on the other hand, by conceptually extending the given. In both cases an authority is speaking, sharing his experiences with the public. The time of musical experience is the present, and outlooks into the future are not impossible. An historical aspect, as is already almost taken for granted today, is far from this extremely well-informed interpreter.

It was a relatively long time before the first volumes appeared in the spring of 1916. Bruno Mugellini died unexpectedly in ­Bologna in January 1912, after having already prepared six volumes. The main burden of the edition was increasingly passed on to Egon Petri, who, with 10 volumes, accomplished a significant task; his preface to the sixth volume, that is, the French Suites, written entirely in the spirit of Busoni, may certainly be regarded in some ways as the credo for the entire project.

But Busoni himself remained the guiding spirit until the end, apart from the fact that the relevant main works can be found in the nine volumes for which he was responsible. World War I had made work difficult since August 1914. As long as Italy remained neutral, Busoni was a respected figure in Berlin, but in May 1915, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, and in August 1916 also on the German Reich. At the beginning of 1915, Busoni had indeed started an extensive tour of America with the idea of waiting out the war in the New World. This turned out to be an illusion, which is why he retired to neutral Zurich in autumn 1915. In the saber-rattling empire he was now a partially controversial figure. That Breitkopf, despite all, stood by him, speaks for the still shining Bach competence that was associated with his name, but also for the liberality and foresight of the publishing house. The Leipzig – New York – Zurich correspondence, the flow of information, the constant exchange of corrections was sometimes arduous, and eventually the formerly friendly relationship with Egon Petri clearly became clouded. Frequently, the exchange between Busoni and Petri took place only via the editorial department of Breitkopf & Härtel. And as if that were not enough, the rights to Busoni’s edition of the Well-Tempered Clavier (part 1) had to be laboriously acquired from the Schirmer publishing house in New York, where this version was first published in 1894. The case turned out to be so complicated in times of war that Mugellini’s version, which had already been published by Breitkopf in 1908/09 and is concurrently still ­available today, was scheduled as volume 1 up to shortly before the eleventh hour. In July 1918, Busoni sent the engraver’s model for volume 16, his last volume, to the publisher, yet the final ­volumes 10 and 25 by Petri appeared only in May 1923. Considering that the Inventions, Busoni’s most successful instructive edition, first appeared in 1891, this edition project thus mirrors more than 30 years of a sophisticated Bach reception, the basic features of which still appear exemplary today, thanks to their reflective evidence.

Des wohltemperierten Klavieres erster Teil Zum Gebäude der Tonkunst wälzte Johann Sebastian Bach Riesenquadern herbei und fügte sie unerschütterlich fest zu einem Fundament zusammen. Er legte den Grund zu unserer heutigen Kompositionsrichtung und bildete den Ausgangspunkt des modernen Klavierspiels. Seiner Zeit um Generationen vorausgeeilt, fühlte und dachte er in solchen Größenverhältnissen, daß die damaligen Ausdrucksmittel diesen nicht genügten.

Dieses allein erklärt, daß die Erweiterung, die „Modernisierung“ einiger seiner Werke (durch Liszt, Tausig u. a.) nicht gegen den „Bachschen Stil“ verstößt, ja, diesen erst zu vervollständigen scheint, es erklärt, daß Wagnisse, wie Raff beispielsweise eines mit der Chaconne1 unternommen, möglich waren, ohne der Karikatur zu verfallen.

Bachs Nachfolger, Haydn und Mozart, stehen uns tatsächlich ferner und fügen sich ganz in den Rahmen ihrer Zeit. Bearbeitungsversuche irgendwelcher ihrer Werke – im Sinne der bereits angeführten Bach-Übertragungen – wären plumpe Mißgriffe.

Die Mozartschen und Haydnschen Klavierkompositionen lassen sich in keiner Weise unserem Pianofortestil anpassen: ihrem Gedankengehalt genügt und entspricht allein der Originalsatz.

Mozarts Klaviergeist überträgt sich in einer innerlich geschwächten, äußerlich bereicherten Form auf Hummel. Von hier an verliert sich auf jener Seite der Musikgeschichte, welche die „weibliche“ zu heißen verdiente, der Einfluß Bachs und somit sein Zusammenhang mit der Richtung der komponierenden Klaviervirtuosen immer mehr: demgemäß auch das Verständnis für die Bachsche Musik.

Die stets allgemeiner werdende (in unsere Zeit noch hineinwuchernde) Neigung zur „eleganten Sentimentalität“ gipfelt in Field, Henselt, Thalberg und Chopin2 und erhebt sich – namentlich durch den ihr eigenen Glanz des Klaviersatzes und -klanges – zu einer beinahe selbständigen Bedeutung in der Klavierliteratur.

Andererseits aber entstanden mit Beethoven neue Berührungspunkte zu dem Eisenacher Meister, die den Gang der Tonkunst ihm wieder näher und stets näher brachten, am nächsten durch Liszt und Wagner,3 deren beider Stileigenschaften geradenwegs auf Bach hinweisen und mit ihm einen Kreis schließen. Die Errungenschaften des modernen Klavierbaues und unsere Beherrschung ihrer weitgreifenden Mittel geben uns nun erst die Möglichkeit, die unzweideutigen Intentionen Bachs erschöpfender zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Also glaubte ich den richtigen Weg zu beschreiten, wenn ich vom „Wohltemperierten Klavier“, diesem pianistisch so bedeutungsvollen, musikalisch allumfassenden Werke, ausholte, um „gleichsam vom Stamme“ die vielseitigen Verzweigungen der heutigen Klaviertechnik abzuleiten und darzustellen.

Obwohl wir Carl Czerny (diesem Manne, dessen Bedeutung nicht zum geringsten darin besteht, das vermittelnde Glied zwischen Beethoven und Liszt gewesen zu sein) gewissermaßen die Auferstehung des „Wohltemperierten Klaviers“ verdanken, so bot es uns doch dieser vortreffliche Pädagoge allzusehr im Gewande seiner Zeit, so daß weder seine Auffassung noch seine Setzweise heute noch widerspruchslos gültig sein können.

Erst Bülow und Tausig, auf den Offenbarungen ihres Meisters Liszt in der Wiedergabe der Klassiker weiterbauend, haben be-

friedigende Resultate in der Interpretation Bachscher Werke erzielt. Namentlich ist es Tausigs „Auswahl“ seiner Präludien und Fugen, die dafür zeugt.

Man wird im Verlaufe der vorliegenden Arbeit stellenweise manches mit Tausig übereinstimmende, selten etwas durchaus Identisches treffen. Hierbei gestatte ich mir anzuführen, was der Dichter Grabbe bezüglich einer geplanten Shakespeare-Übersetzung an Immermann schrieb: „Wo ich Schlegel gebrauchen konnte, tat ich das auch, denn es ist lächerlich, dumm oder eitel, wenn der Übersetzer da, wo sein Vorgänger ihm Bahn gemacht, von dieser ab- und über die Seitenhecken springt.“ Das Bedürfnis nach einer in jeder Hinsicht möglichst vollständigen4 und stilgerechten Fassung des „Wohltemperierten Klaviers“ bewog den Herausgeber, an den Versuch einer solchen die peinlichste Gewissenhaftigkeit und Sorgfalt sowie die Ergebnisse seines nun mehr als zehnjährigen Studiums des Gegenstandes zu wenden. Wie früher angedeutet, verfolgt aber diese Bearbeitung den weiteren Zweck, das ausgiebige Material nebenbei gewissermaßen zu einer weitumfassenden Hochschule des Klavierspiels umzugießen. Die Erfüllung dieser letzteren Aufgabe wird sich jedoch hauptsächlich auf den ersten Band erstrecken als den in bezug auf Mannigfaltigkeit technischer Motive ausschlaggebenden Teil des Werkes5.

Daran anschließend soll des Herausgebers Ausgabe der Bachschen Inventionen (Edition Breitkopf Nr. 4304/05) als eine Vorschule, sollen seine Konzertbearbeitungen der Orgelfugen, der Toccaten, der Goldberg-Variationen und der Violinchaconne desselben Meisters als Abschluß zu dem hier gebotenen Studienwerk dienen.

Nach vollkommen erlangter musikalischer und technischer Kenntnis dieser Werke sollte jeder ernststrebende Klavierspieler die noch nicht bearbeiteten Original-Orgelkompositionen von Bach auf sein Klavierpult setzen und sich anschicken, diese möglichst vollständig und vollstimmig auf dem Pianoforte (wo die Lage es gestattet, mit Oktavenverdoppelung der Pedalstimmen) ex tempore wiederzugeben. In welchem Sinne dieses beiläufig auszuführen ist, sollen die als Anhang zum 1. Bande beigegebenen Transkriptionsbeispiele andeuten.

Dieser umfangreiche Studienplan Bachscher Musik auf dem Pianoforte ist indes nur ein Teil dessen, was erforderlich ist, einen von Haus aus musikalisch begabten Menschen zu einem Klavierspieler zu machen. Würde diese Tatsache von jedem ehrlichen Lehrer den musiklustigen Anfängern gründlich vor Augen geführt, so dürfte der Maßstab, den man heute an die künstlerischen und moralischen Fähigkeiten der Schüler zu legen sich begnügt, in Kürze herauf- und in eine für die Allgemeinheit nicht so bequem erreichbare Ferne rücken. Solcherweise könnte allmählich dem Dilettantismus und der Mittelmäßigkeit eine Schranke gesetzt werden, über welche den Sprung zu wagen und möglicherweise den Hals zu brechen sich mancher zuerst reiflicher überlegen würde, als er es unter den herrschenden Umständen für notwendig hält.

About the Well-Tempered Clavier, first part For the building of musical art, Johann Sebastian Bach on this occasion rolled up giant blocks of hewn stone and firmly joined them together to form a steadfast foundation. He laid the ground for our current direction of composition and generated the starting point for modern piano playing. Generations ahead of his time, he felt and thought in such proportions that the expressive means of these did not at the time suffice.

This alone explains that the expansion, the “modernization” of some of his works (by Liszt, Tausig, among others), does not infringe upon the “Bach style,” indeed, it seems just to complete this, it explains that adventures such as those, for example, that Raff undertook with the Chaconne1 were possible without falling into caricature.

Bach’s successors, Haydn and Mozart, are actually further away from us and fit entirely within the framework of their time.

Attempts to arrange any of their works – in terms of the Bach transcriptions already cited – would be crass errors of judgment.

The Mozart and Haydn piano compositions can in no way be adapted to our pianoforte style: only the original composition suffices to correlate with the original composition.

Mozart’s piano spirit is transmitted to Hummel in an internally weakened, externally enriched form. From here on, increasingly lost on that side of music history deserving to be called “feminine,” is Bach’s influence and hence its conjunction with the direction of the composing piano virtuosos: also, accordingly, the understanding of the Bach music.

The ever more general penchant for “elegant sentimentality” (still proliferating into our time), culminates in Field, Henselt, Thalberg, and Chopin2 and arises – especially through the sheer brilliance of the piano setting and sound – to an almost independent significance in the piano literature.

On the other hand, though, new points of commonality with the Eisenach master emerged with Beethoven, bringing

the course of musical art back ever nearer to him, the nearest through Liszt and Wagner,3 both of whose stylistic characteristics point straight to Bach and close a circle with him. The achievements of modern piano construction and our mastery of their far-reaching means only now give us the opportunity of more exhaustively expressing Bach’s unambiguous intentions.

Thus, I felt I was on the right path when I started out with the “Well-Tempered Clavier,” this musically all-encompassing work that is so pianistically significant, in order to derive and represent the manifold ramifications of today’s piano technique “as it were, from the root.”

Although in a sense we have to thank Carl Czerny (this man whose importance lies, not least, in being the mediator between Beethoven and Liszt) for the resurrection of the “Well-Tempered Clavier,” this excellent pedagogue offered it to us altogether too much in the guise of his time, so that neither his conception nor his method of setting can still be unquestionably valid today. Only Bülow and Tausig, continuing to build on the revelations of their master Liszt in rendering the classics, have achieved satisfactory results in interpreting Bach’s works. It is, in particular, Tausig’s “­selection” of his preludes and fugues that testifies to this.

Here and there in the course of the present work one will come across a passage concordant with Tausig, rarely anything that is absolutely identical. Here, I take the liberty of citing what the poet Grabbe wrote to Immermann about a planned Shakespeare translation: “Wherever I could use Schlegel, I did that, too, for it is ridiculous, stupid, or vain, if there where his predecessor made him a path, the translator bolts off it and leaps over the hedgerow.”

The need for a version of the “Well-Tempered Clavier,” in every respect as complete as possible4 and true to the original style,

motivated the editor to attempt to devote the most painstaking meticulousness and care to the topic and to apply the results of his now more than ten years’ study of it. As indicated earlier, though, this arrangement pursues, besides, the further purpose of pouring, as it were, the extensive material into a wide-ranging academy of piano playing. The fulfillment of this latter task will, however, mainly cover the first volume as the decisive part of the work in terms of the variety of technical motifs.5 The editor’s edition of the Bach Inventions (Edition Breitkopf No. 4304/05) is to serve, subsequently, as a Vorschule [preparatory course], his concert arrangements of the organ fugues, the toccatas, the Goldberg variations, and the violin chaconne by the same master, as a conclusion to the study offered here.

After having become fully acquainted, musically and technically, with these works, all serious, aspiring pianist should put Bach’s original organ compositions, which have not yet been arranged, on their piano desk and prepare to reproduce them extempore on the pianoforte as complete and full-voiced as possible (wherever the situation permits, with octave doubling of the pedal parts). The transcription examples in the appendix to volume 1 are intended to indicate approximately how this is to be executed.

This extensive study plan of Bach’s music on the pianoforte is meanwhile only a part of what is required to turn a musically gifted person into a pianist. If this fact were thoroughly demonstrated to the music-loving beginners by every honest teacher, then the standard that one is content to apply today to the artistic and moral abilities of the pupils should soon be raised to a level not so easily attainable by the general public. In this way, a barrier can gradually be set to amateurism and mediocrity, such that many might more carefully consider whether to venture the leap and possibly break their necks, than under the prevailing circumstances they think necessary.

Mendelssohn’s piano writing, more like Hummel’s style, overflowing with smooth counterpoint, has nothing in common with Bach’s boulder-moving polyphony, however long a time the endeavor may also have been to make this believed.

Anmerkungen zu Busonis Terminologie im Wohltemperierten Klavier Allgemein: Busonis Texte sind über 100 Jahre alt, der Sprachgebrauch hat sich seitdem verändert. Dies sollte man berücksichtigen, vor allem, wenn Formulierungen z. T. seltsam oder sogar unverständlich erscheinen. Bestimmte Wörter werden heute nur noch in einem anderen Zusammenhang gebraucht oder ihre Bedeutung hat sich verschoben bzw. ist nahezu obsolet, manchmal auch nur die von Busoni gemeinte Konnotation.

Annotations to Busoni’s Terminology in the Well-Tempered Clavier In general: Busoni’s texts are over 100 years old, and the use of language has changed since then. This should be taken into account, especially if some of the formulations seem strange or even incomprehensible. Certain words are used today only in a different context or their meaning has shifted or is almost obsolete, sometimes only the connotation meant by Busoni.

This also affects the technical terminology in a few cases.

Therefore, here are some hints for easier understanding (a look into the notes, however, usually reveals the meaning).

alternating / anticipation (or leading) and after-striking [German: vor- und nachschlagen] Here, Busoni does not mean the playing of notes shortly before or after the beat but the execution of a passage with alternating hands: the first note (intervall/chord) with one hand on the beat, the second with the other hand after the beat, the third again as the first, and so forth. Therefore, we use „alternating“ in the modern translation.

simulated [German: blind]: In German, the term „blind“ combined with an intervall or chords is rarely known and Busoni used it for a slightly different playing technique as it is associated with in English. As „simulated“ as an English translation from Busonis time can be found

in one of the editions, we adopted this term in the modern translation. In all cases, the meaning is obvious in the music samples.

Pralltriller/Mordent: We use always „upper mordent“ for a Pralltriller and „lower mordent“ for a Mordent.

Pedal names In volume IV of the first part of the Well-tempered Clavier, Busoni describes the pedales and their usage in more detail, and different names are mentioned, which are compiled here. It should be kept in mind that usually the middle pedal of an upright piano has a different function than the middle pedal of a grand piano. Busoni’s music samples, which explicitly mention the pedal III, are therefore not realizable on an upright piano. a) sustaining (damper) pedal = pedal I, also: large pedal, right pedal, loud pedal, T b) the una corda pedal = pedal II, also: soft pedal, sordino pedal, left pedal c) the sostenuto pedal = pedal III, also: prolongation pedal, suspension pedal, middle pedal. (In the text and some music samples, the historic translation gives “sustaining pedal” for this pedal – which from today’s point of view is not correct, as it now stands for the right pedal. Busoni’s labeling “III. T” is unequi­vocal, though.)

p. 13: Addendum Bach in his capacity as harmonist is at the same time a transcendental chromaticist; – wherever in passagework he uses chromatic figurations, they are also mostly (if not always!) of a harmonic nature. Thus, for example, in the coda of the D minor prelude. As, in any case, we did not encounter figurations of a melodic nature in the 1st volume of the “Well-tempered Clavier,” we did not have an opportunity to touch on this important branch of piano technique.

requires that every pianist be not only familiar with and have mastered all already available transcriptions, but also be able independently to transcribe Bach’s organ pieces for the piano.

Refraining from doing so, he will be acquainted with only the half of Bach. *** The piano of that time entailed some limitations. The depth of thought found its full breadth of expression only on the organ. But Bach’s mind runs as a great unity through all his works.

The manifestations, in which his mind is embodying itself – be they on the organ or on the piano –, show only a difference in dimensions: – hardly of the character and the forms. This one difference, though, is often enormous enough to give Bach’s physiognomy a far more powerful hallmark. *** To be encountered among the Master’s organ works are more pianistic-type compositions, just as, in turn, among the piano fugues there are some types belonging within the organ domain. At its core Bach’s technical method of composing is one and the same for both instruments: except for few different nuances, of which several pedal passages are most prominent.

There can thus be no question of aesthetic offenses in transferring Bach from the organ to the piano. *** But if we acknowledge the legitimacy of such transcriptions, we benefit considerably. The piano literature is augmented by the most outstanding what this art genre in general has to offer. So much for the artist. For the student, on the other hand, opening up to the greatest extent is a technical field that – girded by the paths of the well-tempered piano – grants increased freedom of movement in all directions. *** That such transcriptions are feasible without sinking into mere mutilations of their model, Liszt and Tausig have already satisfactorily proven. We want to affirm the evidence, perfect it, and systematically support the piano prince’s happy inspiration.*) Encountered in pursuit of this goal may be many unexpected, difficult-to-solve problems of piano setting; efforts to resolve such can only lead to new pianistic achievements. *** We do not consistently encounter difficulties, however, as the piano has several features giving it a head start over the organ. Rhythmic precision. Distinctive accuracy in entry. Greater impact and clarity in passagework. Ability to modulate the touch. Transparency in intricate writing. Speed, where such is commanded.**) A simpler, always ready apparatus that is generally at hand. – The pianoforte’s tone duration is after all less limited, at least when handled skillfully, than is demanded of the instrument – which is in this respect infamous. The bass is even very extensive, and its tone can be prolonged as needed by skillfully and inconspicuously replaying it. The majority of Bach’s organ fugues are advantageously kept within figured and moving forms: thus, the most distinguished antagonism between piano and organ, the steady holding of sustained tones, is to some extent cancelled out by itself. *** When approaching the task of transcribing an organ piece for the piano, be sure to bear in mind, in particular, the sound effects of a consummate performance on the organ. Have an excellent organist play it for you. The transcriber should experiment with the organ himself, playing with the stops and trying out their combinations, studying and observing the acoustic ef-
