Empfehlungen Die „Vaccai“-Lieder von Steffen Wolf sind für die Arbeit am deutschen Lied hervorragend geeignet, für Anfänger, für Gesangsstudenten, vor allem in den ersten Semestern, und selbstverständlich für alle, die das Lied lieben.

Das Schöne ist: Diese Lieder sind nicht trockene Etüden, sondern man macht gleich „Musik“, und obendrein kann man neben Gestaltung und Ausdruck auch technische Dinge wie Atemführung, Intonation, Legato, Beweglichkeit und Sprachbehandlung üben.

Vorwort Und mir selbst ist dann, als würd ich Eine Nachtigall und sänge ...1 Er ist aus den Notenbeständen von Konservatorien auf der ganzen Welt ebenso wenig wegzudenken wie aus den Repertoiresammlungen von Berufssängern und Amateuren, Gesangspädagogen und Studierenden – der „Vaccai“. Die Metodo pratico di canto italiano des italienischen Komponisten und Gesangslehrers Nicola Vaccai (1790–1848) gilt seit ihrem Erscheinen 1832 als das Einmaleins des italienischen Gesangs und bereitet sangesfreudige Menschen nahezu aller Niveaus auf die Herausforderungen kultivierten Singens vor. Für das romantische deutsche Lied hingegen hielt die einschlägige Literatur bislang keine Entsprechung bereit. Und dies, obwohl die deutsche Sprache aufgrund ihres Konsonantenreichtums und der Fülle von Vokalfarben eine schier unerschöpfliche lautmalerische Variationsbreite und klangliche Differenzierung ermöglicht und im romantischen Lied eine herausragende Bedeutung hat.

Der Sänger und Komponist Steffen Wolf hat diese Lücke geschlossen. Er komponierte 24 Lieder, die als Übungen in Liedform Anfänger wie fortgeschrittene Sängerinnen und Sänger technisch und künstlerisch auf ihrem Weg begleiten und den sprachlichen Anforderungen des deutschen Liedes besondere Beachtung schenken. Jedes Lied widmet sich intensiv einer grundlegenden technischen oder künstlerischen Fragestellung und ist mit kurzen pädagogischen Kommentaren versehen, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Frau Prof. Sabine Kirchner (Hamburg) entstanden sind. Entsprechend der zeitlichen Nähe von Vaccai und Franz Schubert – dessen Winterreise war nur fünf Jahre vor Vaccais Lehrwerk im Druck erschienen – sind die Kompositionen eng an das Kunstlied der Romantik angelehnt. Mal schnell zu erlernen, dann wieder Übungen, sind sie den schwierigen technischen Anforderungen dieses Genres angepasst. Der Klavierpart ist dabei im Großen und Ganzen leicht gehalten, sodass die Konzentration auch des begleitenden Gesangslehrers ganz auf den Gesang gerichtet bleiben kann.

Für seine 24 Übungen in Liedform hat Steffen Wolf Gedichte und Gedichtzeilen von Heinrich Heine gewählt 2, dessen immense Präsenz im Kunstlied gute Gründe hat: die Klanglichkeit seiner Lyrik etwa, die suggestive Bildsprache und nicht zuletzt die knappe und klare Form. So sind die Stücke kurz und abwechslungsreich gestaltet und es kommt, Heine sei Dank, auch der Humor nicht zu kurz. Wolfs Miniaturen sind wie ihre italienischen Vorbilder keine Etüden, sondern immer „echte“ Lieder, eignen sich also gleichermaßen zum Üben, Musizieren und Aufführen. Der Vorteil des deutschen „Vaccai“ ist, um es mit Brahms zu sagen, dass man nicht „immer einen Riesen hinter sich marschieren hört“, wie es der Fall sein kann, wenn man sich den Herausforderungen eines Schumann- oder Schubert-Liedes stellt.

Analog zum italienischen Vorbild erscheint der deutsche „Vaccai“ als schlanker Band in Ausgaben für hohe, mittlere und tiefe Stimme.

Jedem Band ist eine CD beigefügt, auf der die Lieder in der jeweiligen Stimmlage zu hören sind – gesungen von der Sopranistin Miriam Alexandra, der Altistin Yvi Jänicke, dem Bariton Dávid Csizmár und vom Komponisten (Tenor) selbst. Begleitet werden die Sänger von dem Pianisten Henning Lucius, der zusätzlich für jede CD die Klavier-Playbacks eingespielt hat.

The “Vaccai” – impossible to imagine a conservatory music library without it, anywhere in the world; impossible, also, to imagine its absence from the repertoire collections of professional singers and amateurs, voice teachers and students: The Metodo pratico di canto italiano of the Italian composer and voice teacher Nicola Vaccai (1790–1848) has been considered since its publication in 1832 as the ultimate groundwork for Italian singing, and as the preparatory book for introducing nearly all levels of beginning vocal artists to the challenges of cultivated singing. As to the romantic German lied, however, there was no “Vaccai” corresponding to the Italian one – although the German language, owing to its wealth of consonants and vowel colors, allows a sheer inexhaustible onomatopoeic breadth of variations and sound nuances, and helps establish the importance of the romantic lied.

The singer and composer Steffen Wolf has closed this gap by writing 24 songs which, as exercises in lied form, give a technical and artistic boost to beginners and advanced singers on their way to proficiency, and pay tribute to the linguistic demands of the German lied. Each song devotes itself intensively to a fundamental technical or artistic matter and is supplied with short pedagogical comments that arose in conjunction with Prof. Sabine Kirchner (Hamburg). Keeping in mind the contemporaneity of Vaccai and Franz Schubert – whose Winterreise (The Winter Journey) was published only five years before Vaccai’s instructional method – the style of the pieces strongly reflects that of the art song of the romantic era. Some of the pieces are easy to learn, and there are exercises that are adjusted to the high technical demands of this genre. The piano part is kept rather simple so that the accompanying voice teacher can fully concentrate on the song.

For his 24 exercises in lied form, Steffen Wolf has selected poems or lines of poems by Heinrich Heine2, whose dominating presence in the art song is justified by the sound of his poetry, by his evocative pictorial language and, not least, by its succinct and clear form. Thus the pieces are kept short and varied, and also open the door to humor through Heine’s style. Like their Italian models, Wolf ’s miniatures are not etudes but always “genuine” songs, and thus equally appropriate for practicing, music-making and performances. The advantage of the German “Vaccai” is – to quote Brahms – “that you do not always hear the steps of a giant marching behind you.” This can be the case when a singer confronts the challenges of a lied by Schumann or Schubert.

Analogous to the Italian model, the German “Vaccai” is being printed in a slender volume in editions for high, middle and low voice.

Each volume is supplied with a CD on which the songs can be heard in the respective voice range sung by soprano Miriam Alexandra, alto Yvi Jänicke, baritone Dávid Csizmár and the composer (tenor) himself. The singers are accompanied by the pianist Henning Lucius, who also recorded the piano playbacks for every CD. C’est un indispensable des catalogues des conservatoires du monde entier comme des bibliothèques des chanteurs professionnels et amateurs, des pédagogues et des étudiants en chant : le « Vaccai ». La Metodo pratico di canto italiano du compositeur italien et professeur de chant Nicola Vaccai (1790-1848) passe depuis sa parution en 1832 pour le b.a-ba du bel canto italien et il prépare toute personne aimant chanter, quel que soit son niveau, aux défis d’une pratique cultivée du chant. En revanche il n’existait pas pour l’instant d’ouvrage équivalent pour le lied romantique allemand.

Et ce, bien que la langue allemande, grâce à sa richesse en consonnes et à sa profusion de couleurs vocaliques, permette une palette de variations colorées et de différentiations sonores proprement inépuisables et qu’elle joue un rôle éminent dans le lied romantique.

Le chanteur et compositeur Steffen Wolf a comblé cette lacune. Il a composé 24 mélodies, exercices en forme de lied, destinées à accompagner le cheminement technique et artistique des chanteuses et chanteurs débutants comme confirmés, tout en prenant particulièrement en considération les exigences du lied allemand quant à la langue. Chaque mélodie traite intensément une question technique ou artistique fondamentale et elle est flanquée d’un bref commentaire pédagogique, élaboré en collaboration avec Madame Prof. Sabine Kirchner (Hambourg). Conformément à la proximité temporelle entre Vaccai et Franz Schubert – dont le Voyage d’ hiver parut cinq ans seulement avant l’ouvrage pédagogique de Vaccai – les compositions se rapprochent étroitement du lied romantique. Parfois vite apprises, parfois plutôt exercices, elles sont adaptées aux difficultés techniques rencontrées dans ce genre. La partie de piano reste facile dans l’ensemble afin que le professeur puisse se concentrer totalement sur le chant tout en accompagnant.

Pour ses 24 exercices en forme de lied, Steffen Wolf a choisi des poèmes et des vers de Heinrich Heine2 dont l’immense présence dans le genre du lied repose sur de bonnes raisons : la musicalité de sa poésie, la suggestivité de son langage imagé, sans oublier la clarté et la concision de la forme. Ainsi les pièces sont-elles de conception brève et variée et, grâce à Heine, même l’humour n’est pas en reste. Comme leurs modèles italiens, les miniatures de Wolf ne sont pas des études, mais de « vrais » lieder ; elles conviennent donc tout autant au travail qu’au plaisir de faire de la musique et à l’exécution en public. L’avantage du « Vaccai » allemand, c’est qu’on « n’entend pas toujours un géant marcher dans son dos », pour reprendre une formule de Brahms, comme ce peut être le cas lorsqu’on affronte les défis d’un lied de Schumann ou de Schubert.

Comme son modèle italien, le « Vaccai » allemand paraît sous forme de partition peu épaisse en trois versions : pour voix élevée, moyenne et grave.

Chaque partition est accompagnée d’un CD qui permet d’écouter les lieder dans le registre correspondant – chantés par la soprano Miriam Alexandra, l’alto Yvi Jänicke, le baryton Dávid Csizmár et par le compositeur lui-même (ténor).

Les chanteurs sont accompagnés par le pianiste Henning Lucius, qui a enregistré en outre pour chaque CD les accompagnements de piano à utiliser en playback.

Die internationale Lautschrift ist ein gutes Hilfsmittel, das es Nicht-Muttersprachlern erleichtert, ein Gefühl für die richtige Aussprache der Heine-Zeilen zu entwickeln. Gleichzeitig kann sie Muttersprachlern helfen, Zweifelsfälle etwa bei dialektaler Färbung zu klären. Nicht immer jedoch kann sie der Komplexität des Themas Vokalfärbung gerecht werden und die feinen Unterschiede zwischen Gesprochenem und Gesungenem erfassen. Ganz besonders gilt dies etwa für die mannigfaltigen Erscheinungsformen und komplizierten Ausspracheregeln des E-Vokals in Endsilben (vgl. Lied Nr. 6).

Da das Thema Aussprache und insbesondere Vokalfärbung sehr komplex ist und im gegebenen Zusammenhang nur angedeutet werden kann, empfehlen wir bei Unklarheiten zum Nachschlagen den Band Deutsche Bühnensprache – Hochsprache von Theodor Siebs, Köln: A. Ahn 141927 oder das im Folgenden genannte Deutsche Aussprachewörterbuch.

The international phonetic transcription is a good aid to help non-native speakers develop a feeling for the correct pronunciation of the Heine texts. At the same time, native speakers can use it in cases of doubt as to, for example, dialectal peculiarities.

However, the complexity of the subject of vowel sounds, and the refined distinctions between the spoken and the sung lyrics cannot always be covered. This applies in particular to the diverse appearance and complicated rules of pronunciation of the vowel E in suffixes (see lied no. 6). The subject of pronunciation and vowel sounds in particular is a very complex issue and can only be hinted at. In case of uncertainties we recommend the use of the dictionary Deutsche Bühnensprache – Hochsprache von Theodor Siebs, Köln: A. The phonetic transcription accompanying the German lieder texts is based on the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) and complies with the latest edition of the reference book Deutsches Aussprachewörterbuch by Eva-Maria Krech, Eberhard Stock, Ursula Hirschfeld, Lutz Christian Anders, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter 2009. For a first approach to the phonetic alphabet, the page explaining the phonetic symbols of a basic German dictionary (for example: Oxford Essential German Dictionary, Oxford: Oxford University Press 2009) can be consulted. Here, all common phonemes in both languages can be found. In the lieder texts, prefixes ending with the letter r as well as monosyllabic words were transcribed by means of vocalisation. This is to be considered a recommendation; decisions in terms of interpretation ought not to be restricted. In order to keep the words as a unit and thus facilitate reading, hyphenation was omitted entirely in the transcription.

Pour les germanophones elle peut servir de référence en cas de doute, en particulier pour corriger les accents régionaux. Elle ne peut pourtant pas toujours rendre compte de la complexité du sujet des couleurs vocaliques ni des légères différences entre la diction parlée et chantée. Text: Die Heimkehr, LXXXV Vortragsbezeichnung: Fließend, zart Im ersten Lied kommt es besonders darauf an, sorgfältig zwischen der kleinen und der großen Sekunde zu unterscheiden und diese, insbesondere in der Abwärtsbewegung, nicht zu weit, aufwärts nicht zu eng zu intonieren.

Das Bild des unaufhörlich fließenden Baches eignet sich gut als technisches Vorbild für das sängerische Legato. Es empfiehlt sich, das Stück auch als Vokalise zu üben.

Der lautmalerische Charakter der Naturlaute, die der Wanderer hört („zirpt“, „Plätschern“), sollte bewusst in die Gestaltung einbezogen werden.

2 Terz (S. 14)

Text: Lyrisches Intermezzo, LXIII Vortragsbezeichnung: Leise, melancholisch Staccato-Übungen sind eine gute Vorbereitung auf das Singen langer, gebundener Noten. Die ersten fünf Töne beispielsweise („Wo ich bin, mich rings …“) können zunächst als gleichmäßige Achtel rhythmisch präzise und ohne Zögern geübt werden.

Für die rhythmische Sicherheit bei langen Tönen ist es darüber hinaus hilfreich, diesen im Geiste eine Repetition kleiner Notenwerte zu unterlegen. Dabei muss ein Vorwärtsstreben spürbar sein. Ein leichtes Crescendieren und Decrescendieren hilft, den Ton nicht starr werden zu lassen.

Der melancholischen Stimmung angepasst ist der dunkel gefärbte Ton der Gesangslinie – auch in dem zum Hellen neigenden Vokal „i“. Durch die Dur-Terz auf dem letzten Wort „Licht“ wird die Stimmung verwandelt.

5 Quinte (S. 20)

Auftakte im Gesang verlangen besondere Aufmerksamkeit, denn die Gesangslinie beginnt nicht erst nach dem Auftakt, sondern bereits vor ihm – mit der ganzen dazugehörenden Spannung. In diesem Lied beginnt jede Phrase mit einem Auftakt.

Bei den Achtelnoten ist jegliche Hast zu vermeiden. Sie sind sorgfältig und in ihrer ganzen Länge bewusst auszusingen. Die Nebensilben bleiben unbetont, ohne jedoch den Klangstrom zu unterbrechen. Bei drei aufeinanderfolgenden Achteln wie bei „Ne-bel be-(deckt)“ oder „rauschen die“ gilt: schwer–leicht–leicht.

3 Quarte (S. 16) „Aufgemerkt!“ Text: Lyrisches Intermezzo, XXXIV Vortragsbezeichnung: Lebhaft, keck, gut zu deklamieren (Beginn); Der Kopf spricht: (T. 1); Das Herz spricht: (T. 10); Das Lied spricht: (T. 19) Der ironische Duktus verlangt eine sorgfältige Artikulation. So müssen zum Beispiel das „ch“ im „Ach“ und die nachfolgenden Kommas gut hörbar sein.

Die Pausen innerhalb der Gesangslinie dürfen den Satzzusammenhang nicht unterbrechen („Ach, wenn ich nur der Schemel wär, …“).

Besondere Aufmerksamkeit verdienen die Achtelauftakte.

Folgt man der Achtelbewegung des Klaviers, ergibt sich die rhythmische Klarheit von selbst.

„Archaischer Klang“

Das Wort „stehen“ lädt zu zwei grundsätzlichen Betrachtungen ein: Das Konsonantenpaar „st“ ist zwar selbst nicht klingend, muss aber bereits bei der ersten Quinte des Stückes präzise auf der Tonhöhe des hohen Tons angesetzt werden.

Eine der vielen Ausspracheregeln zur deutschen Sprache betrifft den Buchstaben „h“ in der Wortmitte, etwa bei dem Wort „stehen“ (T. 2). Es wird nicht mitgesprochen.

6 Sexte (S. 22) „Das emotionalste Intervall“ Text: Die Heimkehr, LXXI Vortragsbezeichnung: Innig, zart Die vielen Schattierungen von Vokalen und der Reichtum an Konsonanten sind eine Besonderheit der deutschen Sprache. Die Aussprache der Vokale hängt von den Konsonanten ab. Der Konsonant beeinflusst den vorangehenden oder den nachfolgenden Vokal, bereitet ihm das „Bett“.

The image of an endlessly flowing brook is ideally suited as a technical model for the songful legato. It is recommended to practice the piece as a vocalise as well.

“The Devil in music”

Staccato exercises are a good preparation for singing longer, legato lines. The first five notes, for example, (“Wo ich bin, mich rings...”) can initially be practiced with rhythmic precision and without hesitation as evenly paced eighth notes.

To maintain the rhythmic accuracy of long notes it is helpful to underlay them in one’s mind with a repetition of smaller note values. At the same time, a forward drive must be perceptible. A gentle crescendo and decrescendo movement helps maintain the fluidity of the note.

The onomatopoeic character of the natural sounds which the hiker hears (“zirpt”/chirps; “Plätschern”/gurgle) should be deliberately included in the shaping of the piece.

The darkly hued tone of the vocal line is adapted to the melancholic mood of the piece – it also includes the vowel “i” which tends to be bright. The atmosphere is transformed thanks to the major third on the last word, “Licht”.

Upbeats in singing demand special attention, as the vocal line does not begin after the upbeat, but before it, with the entire tension belonging to it. In this song, each phrase begins with an upbeat.

The word “stehen” prompts one to make two fundamental observations: the pair of consonants “st” does not sound on its own, but must be placed precisely on the pitch of the high note already by the first fifth of the piece.

As to the eighth notes, all hastiness should be avoided.

They should be fully and carefully sung out and consciously held out for their entire length. The secondary syllables should remain unstressed, but should not interrupt the flow of the sound. Consecutive eighth notes such as “Ne-bel be-(deckt)” or “rau-schen die” should be taken as heavy-light-light.

One of the many pronunciation rules in the German language concerns the letter “h” in the middle of a word, for example at the word “stehen” (m. 2). The “h” is not spoken here.

The many shadings of vowels and the wealth of consonants are a specialty of the German language. The pronunciation of the vowels depends on the consonants, which influence the preceding or following vowel, and prepare their “bed”.

Texte : Die Heimkehr (Le Retour), LXXXV Indication pour l’exécution : fluide, doux Ce qui importe particulièrement dans le premier lied, c’est de bien faire la différence entre les secondes mineures et majeures et d’être attentif à leur intonation : pas trop grandes en descendant surtout, ni trop petites en montant.

L’image d’une rivière coulant sans discontinuer représente un modèle technique tout à fait approprié pour le legato du chant. Il est conseillé de travailler cette pièce aussi en vocalise.

Le caractère de tableau sonore évoqué par les sons de la nature qu’entend le promeneur (« zirpt » / stridule ; « Plätschern » / clapotis) doit être intégré consciemment à l’interprétation.

2 Tierce (p. 14)

Les exercices staccato sont une bonne préparation pour chanter de longues notes liées. On peut par exemple travailler pour commencer les cinq premières notes (« Wo ich bin, mich rings … ») sous forme de croches régulières, précises rythmiquement, et sans hésitation.

Pour la sûreté rythmique des valeurs longues, il peut être utile de les sous-tendre intérieurement par la répétition de valeurs brèves. Il faut sentir en même temps une avancée.

Un léger crescendo et decrescendo aide à ce que le son ne paraisse pas statique.

La coloration sombre de la ligne vocale – même pour la voyelle « i », plutôt de tendance claire – s’accorde avec l’atmosphère mélancolique. La tierce majeure sur le dernier mot « Licht » métamorphose l’ambiance.

Pour le chant, les départs en levée nécessitent une attention particulière, la ligne mélodique ne commençant pas après la levée mais bien avant elle – avec toute la tension que cela implique. Dans ce lied, chaque phrase commence par une levée.

Le mot « stehen » suscite deux remarques de principe : la paire de consonnes « st » n’est certes pas sonore en soi, mais pour la première quinte du morceau, il faut déjà l’attaquer précisément à la hauteur de la note aiguë.

Eviter toute précipitation dans les croches. Il faut les chanter soigneusement et en leur donnant toute leur longueur.

Les syllabes secondaires restent non accentuées sans interrompre pour autant le flux sonore. Lorsque trois croches se suivent, comme pour « Ne-bel be-(deckt) » ou « rau-schen die », on aura fort-faible-faible.

L’une des nombreuses règles de prononciation de la langue allemande concerne la lettre « h » au milieu des mots, dans le mot « stehen » par exemple (mes. 2). Il ne faut pas le prononcer.

Les nombreuses nuances vocaliques et la richesse en consonnes sont une particularité de la langue allemande.

La prononciation des voyelles dépend des consonnes. La consonne influence la voyelle précédente ou suivante, prépare son « lit ».

Le ton ironique exige une articulation soignée. Il faut qu’on puisse bien entendre par exemple le ch de « Ach » et les virgules qui suivent.

Ce lied donne un bon exemple de la variété de sonorité de « e »2. Dans « der », « er » et « Weg » le « e » est long et fermé (comme dans « thé » [eː]). Mais « er- » en tant que préfi xe
