Preface

Die vierhändigen Bearbeitungen in diesem Heft sind so gestaltet, dass beide Parts von Klavierschülern in den ersten Unterrichtsjahren gespielt werden können. Die Stücke bieten somit die Möglichkeit, gemeinsames Musizieren in den Klavierunterricht einzubeziehen. Naheliegend ist dies im Partnerunterricht, die Stücke können aber auch durch jedes andere Klavierduo realisiert werden.

Die Stücke aus Primo & Secondo beruhen auf bekannten Melo­dien, die erfahrungsgemäß Freude machen. Damit beide Duo­partner auch beim häuslichen Üben an dieser Freude teilhaben, findet sich die zugrunde liegende Melodie nicht nur, wie häufig anzu­ treffen, als Oberstimme im Primo, sondern auch als Mittel- oder Unterstimme im Secondo.

Werkgetreu ist diese Setzweise bei den Bearbeitungen klassischer Musik, in deren Original die Melodie sowohl als Oberstimme als auch als Mittel- oder Unterstimme auftritt.

Stilistisch wird ein breites Spektrum vom Kinder- und Volkslied über Klassische Musik bis hin zu Gospel, Blues und Ragtime abgedeckt. Die Sätze sind progressiv angeordnet – von leicht bis mittelschwer. Während die ersten Stücke also bereits nach relativ kurzer Unterrichtszeit gespielt werden können, steigen die Anforderungen etwa auf das Niveau einer Bach-Invention oder Robert Schumanns Album für die Jugend. Als Lerneffekt des Zusammenspiels ermöglicht dieses Heft die Entwicklung der Fähigkeiten zum Aufeinander-Hören, zur Sicherheit bei Tempo und Rhythmus und zur klanglichen Abstimmung der Parts, insbesondere hinsichtlich der Balance von Melodie und Begleitung.

The four-hand arrangements in this volume are designed in such a way that both parts can be played by piano students in their first year of tuition. The pieces thus offer the possibility to incorporate ensemble playing in the piano class. This suggests itself in joint lessons, but the pieces can also be played by any piano duo.

The pieces from Primo & Secondo are based on well-known tunes that everyone enjoys. In order for both duo partners to have equal fun when practicing these pieces at home, the principal melody is not only played as an upper voice in the primo, as is frequently the case, but also as a middle or bottom voice in the secondo.

These arrangements of classical music remain loyal to the original compositions in the sense that here too the melody appears both as upper as well as middle and bottom voices.

Stylistically the volume covers a broad range of children’s and folk songs, classical music to Gospel, Blues and Ragtime. The pieces are arranged in a progressive order – from easy to moderately difficult. So while the first pieces can already be played fairly soon after starting with piano lessons, demands mount approximately to the level of a Bach Invention or Robert Schumann’s Album for the Young. The learning effect of ensemble playing provided by this volume comprises developing the skills of listening to one another, greater security in keeping tempo and rhythm as well as learning to find the right balance between the parts, in particular between melody and accompaniment.

Die angegebenen Fingersätze dienen dem reibungslosen Zusammenspiel der Parts. Sie sollten daher auch bereits beim Einüben der Parts angewandt werden, auch wenn sie da noch nicht schlüssig erscheinen.

Remarks on the Pieces

1 Hejo, spann’ den Wagen an (Seite 3) Dem Beginn des Liedes entstammt das Bass-Ostinato, auf dessen Grundlage die Melodie als zweistimmiger Kanon gespielt wird.

Vom Secondo im Forte-Unisono in tiefer Lage vorgestellt, ruft es gleich zu Beginn die düstere Grundstimmung des Liedes hervor, mit der die bedrohliche Situation durch den im Text erwähnten nahenden Regen zum Ausdruck gebracht wird.

Die Schüler sollten beim gemeinsamen Üben auch nur die im Kanon geführten Stimmen spielen, um ein genaues Zusammenspiel zu erarbeiten.

Bei der Wahl des Tempos sollten die später noch folgenden Achtel­noten berücksichtigt werden.

1 Heigh-ho, Anybody Home (page 3) The ostinato bass over which the melody is played as a two-part canon is taken from the beginning of the song. Presented by se­ condo in forte unisono in the low register, it conjurs up from the very start the sombre mood of the song, expressing the threatening situation of the oncoming rain mentioned in the lyrics.

When practicing with your partner, it is advised to only practice the canonically led voices in order to achieve a tight performance.

When deciding on the tempo you should also keep in mind the eighth notes that come later.

2 Auf der Mauer, auf der Lauer (Seite 4) Die schlichte Melodie wird erst vom Primo begleitet und bei ihrer Wiederholung vom Secondo. Damit die Begleitung aus über­ wiegend längeren Tönen rhythmusfest gelingt, sollte dem Spieler der Schlag ständig präsent sein. Hierbei kann der Hinweis helfen, ihn zumeist in der Melodie hören zu können.

Das übliche Weglassen von Silben bei der Wiederholung des Liedes ist übernommen worden und wird dreimal durch Händeklatschen verdeutlicht. Sollte dies zu schwierig sein, sind auch andere Formen der Geräuscherzeugung wie Gegeneinanderschlagen der Füße oder Fußstampfen denkbar.

2 On the Wall, on the Lookout (page 4) The simple tune is first accompanied by primo and in its repeat by secondo. To make sure that the accompaniment consisting mainly of longer notes is rhythmically steady, you should always be aware of the beat. Most of the time you can hear this in the melody.

This arrangement retains the traditional dropping of syllables in the repeat of the song which is illustrated three times by hand clapping. If this should prove too difficult, other forms of making noise are also possible, such as knocking your feet together or stamping your feet.

3 Frère Jacques (Seite 6) Einleitung und Schlusstakte stellen in ruhigen halben Noten das im Liedtext erwähnte Glockengeläut dar. Dazwischen erklingt das Lied als zweistimmiger Kanon in zwei Durchgängen. Hierbei ist immer nur eine Hand jedes Spielers am Kanon beteiligt, während die andere Hand einfache Begleitaufgaben ausführt.

Zum gemeinsamen Üben und zur Tempowahl siehe Hejo, spann’ den Wagen an.

3 Frère Jacques (page 6) The intro and the final measures in tranquil half-notes reflect the peal of bells mentioned in the song. The song itself is played as a two-part canon in two runs. For this you use only one hand each, the other performing simple accompaniment tasks.

The remarks about practicing together and choice of tempo on Heigh-ho, Anybody Home also apply here.

4 Der Kuckuck und der Esel (Seite 8) Der Dialog zwischen Kuckuck und Esel in der zweiten Strophe hat die Aufteilung der Melodie zwischen Primo und Secondo im Mittelteil angeregt. In den Rahmenteilen wird die Melodie dagegen von beiden rechten Händen gemeinsam gespielt. Es ist ratsam, dieses Unisono-Spiel auch ohne die Begleitstimmen zu üben, bis es präzise klappt.

Der Spieler sollte die Takte, in denen er pausiert, auszählen, um im richtigen Moment einsetzen zu können.

In der dritten Strophe tritt das „falsche“ As im Bass dann erstmals ein, wenn im Text ironischerweise von einem „lieblichen“ Klang die Rede ist. Dass es gar nicht angenehm klingt, wenn zwei Besserwisser streiten, soll auf diese Weise musikalisch zum Ausdruck gebracht werden.

Der Tonumfang ist in allen vier Stimmen gering gehalten, wobei ein sechstöniger Skalenausschnitt in der Melodie Unter- und Übersatz erfordert.

4 The Cuckoo and the Donkey (page 8) The dialogue between the cuckoo and the donkey in the second verse provided the idea for dividing the melody between primo and secondo in the middle section, while in the outer sections the melody is played by both right hands together. It is advisable to practice this unisono playing also without the accompaniment until it sounds completely accurate.

When you join in again after a longer pause, you should count the rest measures in order to make sure to come in at the right moment.

In the third verse the “incorrect” A flat in the bass is played for the first time when the lyrics ironically mention a “mellow” sound. The idea was to express musically that it doesn’t sound pleasant at all when two know-alls are busy arguing.

All four voices are kept within a limited tonal range, with only one six-note scale in the melody making it necessary to pass the fingers under and over the hand.

44 5 Yankee Doodle (Seite 10) Erstmals im Heft auftretende chromatische Tonfolgen bereichern die Harmonik um Formen der Doppeldominante.

Im zweiten Teil kommt ein punktierter Rhythmus ins Spiel, der bei der zweiten Phrase von beiden Parts gleichzeitig gespielt wird. Für ein genaues Zusammenspiel an dieser Stelle ist es ratsam, den zweiten Spieler darauf hinzuweisen, dass er den verlangten Rhythmus unmittelbar vorher im Primo hören kann.

5 Yankee Doodle (page 10) Chromatic passages make their first appearance in this volume, enriching the harmony with forms of the double dominant.

The second part introduces a dotted rhythm which in the second phrase is played by both players at the same time. In order to achieve the necessary precision here the second player should take into account that the required rhythm can be heard immediately before in the primo.

6 I Like the Flowers (Seite 11) Die Bearbeitung dieses Traditionals gründet sich durchgehend auf das harmonische Pattern I – VI – II – V, wie es sich in den Rahmentönen des Melodiebeginns findet. Sie bietet somit die Gelegenheit, sich mit einer der gängigsten harmonischen Verbin­ dungen der Popularmusik zu beschäftigen.

Zwischen den Rahmenteilen erklingt die Melodie als zweistim­ miger Kanon, an dem wie bei den vorherigen Kanons nur eine Stimme je Part beteiligt ist.

Die Phraseneinsätze der rechten Hand zwischen dem Beat sitzen dann genau, wenn der zuvor auf dem Beat einsetzende Ton der linken Hand als rhythmischer Bezugspunkt dient.

6 I Like the Flowers (page 11) The arrangement of this traditional tune is based throughout on the harmonic pattern I – VI – II – V that can be retraced in the notes of the beginning of the melody, offering the opportunity to acquaint oneself with one of the most common harmonic progressions in popular music.

Between the outer sections the melody is set as a two-part canon, with only one part per player, like in the previous canons.

You can play right-hand phrase entries between the beat particularly accurately if you take the left-hand note commencing on the previous beat as a rhythmical point of reference.

7 Oh, When the Saints Go Marchin’ in (Seite 12) In beiden Teilen nimmt der auftaktige Beginn der Melodie den Rhythmus der Begleitung vorweg, so dass der Begleiter diesen bei seinem Einstieg rhythmisch nur zu imitieren braucht.

Harmonisch sorgen chromatische Passagen für Bereicherung, von denen die längeren im Primo zu finden sind.

Ein Gefühl für den Alla-breve-Takt kann bei flottem Tempo unter Mitschwingen des Oberkörpers auf „Eins“ und „Drei“ entwickelt werden, sobald Ton- und Rhythmussicherheit vorhanden sind.

Das Minimalziel sollten flotte Viertel sein.

Dass es reizvoll ist, die Wiederholung einer Melodie mit einem Tonart­wechsel zu verbinden, lässt sich sowohl in dieser als auch in den Bearbeitungen Nr. 12 und 14 erfahren.

7 Oh, When the Saints Go Marchin’ in (page 12) In both sections the anacrustic beginning of the melody anti­ cipates the rhythm of the accompaniment, so that when the accompanist enters he only needs to imitate it.

Chromatic passages, mainly played by primo, lend colour to the piece.

You can develop a feeling for the alla breve time signature at a brisk speed by swaying your upper body on the “one” and “three”, as soon as you feel confident with the notes and the rhythm. At the least, you should aim for lively quarter notes.

This arrangement, as well as Nos 12 and 14, shows that it’s a nice effect to combine the repeat of a melody with a change of key.

8 Happy Birthday (Seite 14) Das Begleitmuster aus Basseinsatz auf dem ersten Schlag und zwei nachschlagenden Vierteln ist im ersten Abschnitt auf die linke Hand des Secondos und den Primo-Spieler verteilt. Hilfreich für den rhythmischen Zusammenhalt der Parts ist es, wenn der Primo wahrnimmt, wie der Secondo die erste Zählzeit markiert.

Dies kann mit dem Weglassen der Melodie in der rechten Hand des Secondos geübt werden.

Erstmals im Heft tritt in dieser Bearbeitung nennenswertes Doppelgriff- und etwas Akkordspiel auf, wobei sich letzteres auf elementarstem Niveau im Wechsel von Tonikadreiklang und Dominant­septakkord bewegt.

8 Happy Birthday (page 14) In the first section the accompaniment pattern of a bass entry on the first beat and two subsequent quarter notes is divided between the left hand of the secondo and the primo player. It is helpful for the rhythmic cohesion of the parts if primo is aware how secondo marks the first beat. This can be practiced by leaving out the melody in the right hand of the secondo.

For the first time in this volume this arrangement features a significant amount of double-note and chord playing, the latter on the most elementary level in the change between tonic triad and dominant seventh.

9 Là ci darem la mano (Seite 15) Die wiegende Begleitung zu dieser einschmeichelnden Melodie ist zu Beginn auf die linke Hand des Secondos mit den Basseinsätzen auf den schweren Zeiten und auf beide Hände des Primos mit den nachschlagenden Akkorden verteilt. Taktfestigkeit beim damit einhergehenden Pendeln zwischen den Parts lässt sich am besten erreichen, wenn die Spieler die Einsätze des jeweils anderen wahrnehmen. Um diese Fähigkeit zu entwickeln, ist es ratsam,

The melody should be played very cantabile by giving the phrases appropriate dynamic shadings.

10 An die Freude (Seite 16) Der im ersten Moment vielleicht etwas unkonventionell erscheinende Begleitsatz des Primos im ersten Teil orientiert sich an Beet­ hovens Originalsatz, mit dem die Melodie bei ihrem Auftreten als Unterstimme begleitet wird. Wie bei Beethoven sollte sie gegen­ über der Begleitung deutlich hervortreten. Ist dies schon dadurch begünstigt, dass der Secondo sie unisono spielt, verstärkt es sich noch, wenn die Angaben zur Lautstärke umgesetzt werden. Dann wird im zweiten Teil auch der mitreißende Ausdruck von Freude spürbar, zu dem die Melodie bei Beethoven gesteigert wird.

10 Ode to Joy (page 16) The accompaniment of the primo in the first section which at first may seem somewhat unconventional follows Beethoven’s original setting which has the melody, when it appears, accompanied as a low voice. As in Beethoven, it should stand out clearly above the accompaniment. This is already aided by the fact that the secondo plays the melody unisono, and is further reinforced when the indications for dynamics are observed. This also brings out the rousing expression of joy in the second section, with which Beethoven infuses the melody.

11 Fröhlicher Landmann (Seite 18) In Schumanns Original liegt die Melodie im ersten Teil im Bass, weshalb sie zunächst vom Secondo gespielt wird. Als Einstiegshilfe für den Primo empfiehlt sich der Hinweis, dass er bei Tempo und Rhythmus seiner begleitenden Akkordrepetitionen die unmittelbar zuvor in der Melodie erklingende Leicht-Schwer-Folge mit auftaktiger Achtel imitieren kann. Im 4. und 8. sowie 14. und 20.

Takt sollte sich der Primo an den Melodietönen auf den ersten drei Zählzeiten orientieren, um den jeweils auf „und“ verlangten nachschlagenden Akkord präzise setzen zu können.

Gemäß Schumanns Original spielt der Primo im zweiten Teil phrasenweise die Melodie. Dann ist es hilfreich, wenn er auf die begleitenden Achtelrepetitionen im Secondo hört, um die Länge der punktierten Viertelnoten genau einhalten zu können.

11 Happy Farmer (page 18) In the first section of Schumann’s original composition the melody is in the bass, which is why it is played first by the secondo.

For the primo’s entry as well as tempo and rhythm of the accompanying repeated chords it can be helpful to point out that he only needs to imitate the sequence light-heavy with anacrustic eighthnote that appears directly before in the melody. In measures 4 and 8 as well as 14 and 20 primo should focus on the melody notes on the first three beats, in order to strike the subsequent chord accurately on the “and”.

Following Schumann’s original, primo plays, in the second section, only individual phrases of the melody. For this it is helpful to listen closely to the accompanying eighth repetitions in the secondo, in order to precisely hold the length of the dotted quarter notes.

The piece is characterized by vigorous melody lines that require clear points of emphasis and a pronounced gradation of dynamics.

12 Drei Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass (Seite 20) In Quintparallelen geführte halbtonlose Phrasen zu Beginn lassen traditionelle chinesische Musik zur Einstimmung auf das darauf folgende Lied von den drei Kontrabassisten aus Fernost anklingen.

Das Spiel ihres Instruments ist im zweiten Teil in Form von tiefen Dreiklangsbrechungen des Secondos aufs Klavier übertragen.

12 Three Chinese with a Double Bass (page 20) Phrases in parallel fifths without semitone steps reminiscent of traditional Chinese music set the mood as an introduction to the subsequent song about the three double-bass players from the Far East. In the second section the sound of their instrument is transferred to the piano in the form of low arpeggiated triads played by secondo.

13 Backwater Blues (Seite 22) … ist ein traditioneller Blues, der in langsamem Tempo triolisch zu spielen ist T.eef = ÁT \4À . Zur Vermittlung dieser Spielweise können die Melodiephrasen und Basslinien zunächst durch gesprochene Rhythmusübungen einstudiert werden. Hierbei sollte wie dann auch im Stück der Beat beispielsweise durch gleichmäßiges Klopfen präsent sein. Dabei ist es empfehlenswert, die Aufnahme eines Blues von berühmten Jazzmusikern wie Miles Davis oder Louis Armstrong anzuhören.

13 Backwater Blues (page 22) ...is a traditional Blues that should be played in a slow tempo with a triplet feeling T.eef = ÁT \4À. In order to convey this way of playing the melodic phrases and bass lines can first be practiced by means of spoken rhythm exercises. As in the piece itself the beat should be brought out via regular tapping. It’s a good idea to listen to a Blues recording by famous Jazz musicians such as Miles Davis or Louis Armstrong.

15 Andantino (Seite 26) In Anlehnung an das Original erklingt die kantable Melodie zunächst als Oberstimme im Primo und später als Mittelstimme in der rechten Hand des Secondos. Die Angaben zu ihrer Phrasierung, Artikulation und dynamischen Gestaltung stammen von Tschaikowsky und sollten für ein ausdrucksvolles Spiel berücksichtigt werden. Dies ist umso wichtiger, als der Rhythmus aus einer ununterbrochenen Folge von (80!) Achteln natürlich die Gefahr des Leierns in sich birgt. Im Hinblick auf Dynamik und Agogik darf also sicher noch über das, was in den Noten steht, hinaus differenziert werden.

Bei den begleitenden Akkorden im ersten Teil ist ein weiches Staccato die Artikulation der Wahl, um dem Pizzicato des Originals nahezukommen. Im zweiten Teil sollte die Melodie gegenüber den Begleitstimmen im Primo deutlich hervortreten. Zum Fingersatz gilt das zu Go down, Moses Gesagte.

15 Andantino (page 26) Following the original, the cantabile melody first appears as an upper voice in primo and later as a middle voice in the right hand of secondo. The indications for phrasing, articulation and dynamics are from Tchaikovsky himself and should be followed meticulously for an expressive interpretation. This is all the more important as the rhythm consisting of an uninterrupted sequence of (80!) eighth notes brings with it the danger of droning. In terms of dynamics and agogics the player may certainly differentiate more than what is indicated in the score.

In the accompanying chords in the first section a soft staccato is the articulation of choice in order to approach the pizzicato of the original. In the second section the melody should stand out clearly above the accompanying voices in primo. Regarding fingering see the remarks on Go down, Moses.

16 In der Halle des Bergkönigs (Seite 28) Anhand eines einzigen, ständig wiederholten Themas gestaltet Grieg eindrucksvoll die Szenerie der Peinigung des Protagonisten Peer Gynt durch Bergtrolle. Wesentliches Mittel hierbei ist die Steigerung des markanten Themas durch Anstieg seiner Lage, Zunahme der Lautstärke und zuletzt noch Erhöhung des Tempos, bis es schließlich beängstigend schrill und panisch klingt. Die Temposteigerung ab Takt 41 kann der Primo auf der Achtelebene initiieren, worauf der Secondo mit einer entsprechenden Erhöhung der Pulsfrequenz reagieren muss.

Das Thema wird in Anlehnung an Verdopplungen in Griegs Instrumentation mal mit, mal ohne Oktavverdopplung vorgetragen.

Abschnittsweise kommt es so zum gemeinsamen Unisono-Spiel der Parts, das möglichst zu exakter Synchronizität entwickelt werden sollte. Der Primo kann es sich hierbei zunutze machen, seinen melodischen Beitrag direkt zuvor im Secondo gehört zu haben.

Seine in der Regel schwächere linke Hand profitiert durch das ihr abverlangte Melodiespiel hinsichtlich Geläufigkeit und differenziertem Anschlag.

16 In the Hall of the Mountain King (page 28) Using one single, constantly repeated theme Grieg impressively depicts the torment of the protagonist Peer Gynt by mountain trolls. The composer does this by gradually bringing the music to a climax, first by repeating the distinctive theme in a higher register, then augmenting the volume and finally increasing the tempo, until it sounds frighteningly shrill and frantic. Primo can initiate the increase in tempo from measure 41 onwards to which secondo has to react with a corresponding increase of the pulse.

Following the doublings in Grieg’s instrumentation, the theme is presented sometimes with and sometimes without octave doublings. In certain sections the parts therefore come together in unison, requiring extra practice to achieve as high a degree of togetherness as possible. It will be a help for primo to be aware that his melodic phrase has been played immediately before by secondo. The usually weaker left hand will benefit in terms of fluency and differentiated touch from having to play the melody.

17 Liebestraum (Seite 32) Erst als sonore Mittelstimme, dann zur Oberstimme gesteigert, muss diese Melodie sehr singend gespielt werden, wie ein „Lied ohne Worte“. Jeder Melodieton sollte dabei unter Einsatz des Armgewichts gestaltet werden und zugleich durch Phrasierung und dynamische Nuancierung in größere melodische Zusammenhänge eingebettet sein.

Die Pedalisierung der gebrochenen Akkorde sollte wie notiert dem Secondo überlassen werden, da dieser mit dem daran gewöhnten rechten Fuß treten kann. Sie verleiht der tonal schwebenden Harmonik die nötige klangliche Präsenz, damit diese als musikalische Chiffre für den Seelenzustand der Liebe wahrnehmbar sein kann.

17 Liebestraum (page 32) First appearing as a sonorous middle voice, then intensified to a treble voice, this melody must be played very cantabile, like a “Song without Words”. Every melody note should be shaped using the weight of the arm, at the same time embedded in larger melodic contexts through phrasing and dynamic shading.

The pedaling of the broken chords should, as indicated, be left to secondo, as he can depress the pedal with the right foot accustomed to this task. It lends the necessary presence of sound to the floating harmony so that it can be experienced as a musical code for the emotional state of love.

47 18 Passepied (Seite 35) … war ein fröhlicher Hoftanz und ist daher in eher flottem Tempo zu spielen.

Im Mittelteil ist es stilistisch angemessen, wenn die Hauptstimme in der rechten Hand des Secondos und die konzertante Stimme in der des Primos gleichberechtigt gestaltet sind, also auch gleich laut gespielt werden.

Triller beginnen im Barock mit der oberen Nebennote.

In the middle section it is stylistically appropriate to regard the main voice in the right hand of secondo and the concertante voice in the primo right hand as equally important, which also means they should be played at the same volume.

In Baroque times trills begin with the upper auxiliary note.

19 Thema aus „Rhapsody in Blue“ (Seite 38) Wie bei Gershwin tritt das Thema einerseits als Oberstimme auf, andererseits, reduziert auf den eröffnenden Zweitakter, auch als Unterstimme. Beim ersten Ton im zweiten Takt des Zweitakters handelt es sich um eine kleine Septim oberhalb der Tonika, also eine Blue Note.1 Dieser im Einklang mit dem Titel des gesamten Werkes stehende Ton sollte jedes Mal kräftig akzentuiert werden.

Die häufigen Folgen akzentuierter Töne sind mit Armgewicht non legato zu spielen.

Das Begleitmuster in den Takten 1–8 prägt gegen den harmonisch-melodischen Verlauf im vorgezeichneten 4/4-Takt einen 3/4-Takt aus. Die daraus resultierende metrische Spannung darf durch nachdrückliche Akzentuierung der höchsten Töne der beiden gebrochenen Harmonien in der linken Hand des Secondos (also der Töne H und Cis) deutlich werden.

Um die Vierteltriolen rhythmisch richtig spielen zu können, kann es für den Primo hilfreich sein, von der halben Note im vorigen Takt an vorübergehend einen Alla-breve-Takt zu empfinden. Dies ermöglicht es ihm, die Triolen auf einen Schlag zu spielen, was üblicherweise leichter fällt als gegen zwei Schläge.

Dass die Bearbeitung mit dem Hauptthema der Rhapsody endet, entspricht Gershwins Original.

19 Theme from “Rhapsody in Blue” (page 38) As in Gershwin’s original score the theme appears both as an upper voice and, reduced to the opening two measures, as a bottom voice. The first note in the second measure of the two-measure sequence is a minor seventh above the tonic, thus a blue note.1 This note, which the title of the whole work refers to, should receive a strong accent every time it occurs. The frequent sequences of emphasized notes should be played non legato with arm weight.

The accompaniment pattern in measures 1-8 forms a 3/4 beat contrary to the harmonic-melodic progression in the indicated 4/4 time signature. The resulting metric tension can be emphasized through a marked accentuation of the highest notes of the two broken harmonies in the left hand of the secondo (thus the notes B and C sharp).

In order to play the quarter triplets rhythmically correct it can be helpful for the primo to temporarily feel an Alla breve pulse beginning with the half note in the previous measure. This facilitates playing the triplets on one beat which is usually easier than against two beats.

In accordance with Gershwin’s original the arrangement ends with the main theme of the Rhapsody.

20 Maple Leaf Rag (Seite 40) Die Begleitung besteht überwiegend aus einer durchgehenden Folge von Vierteln, markiert also den Beat. Dagegen bewegt sich die Melodie mit zahlreichen Einsätzen zwischen dem Beat auf der Achtelebene. Der eröffnende Viertel-Auftakt (zu Takt 1 bzw. 17) ist also verhältnismäßig lang. Es kann für den anschließend mit der Melodie betrauten Spieler hilfreich sein, ihn gedanklich in Achteln auszuzählen. Dasselbe gilt für die Generalpause in den Takten 7 bzw. 8 und 23 bzw. 24.

Stiltypisch für den Ragtime sind die vielen zwischen dem Beat einsetzenden Synkopen in der Melodie. Eine von ihnen setzt nach einer Pause der Begleitung in beiden rechten Händen unisono (Takt 12 bzw. 28) ein. Um hier exakt gemeinsam einsetzen zu können, sollten beide Spieler den stummen Beat fühlen. Dies kann in einer Phase des Unterrichts durch klangliche Präsenz des Beats beispielsweise mittels Fingerschnipsen des Lehrers vermittelt werden.

20 Maple Leaf Rag (page 40) The accompaniment consists for the most part of a continuous sequence of quarter notes, marking the beat. The melody moves with numerous entries between the beat on the level of eighth notes. The initiating quarter anacruz (to measure 1 resp. 17) is therefore relatively long. It can be helpful for the player playing the melody to count it through in eighths. The same applies for the general rest in measures 7 resp. 8 and 23 resp. 24.

Typical for this style are the many syncopations in the melody beginning between the beat. One of them begins after a rest in the accompaniment with both right hands unisono (m. 12 resp.

28). In order to begin exactly together both players should feel the silent beat. This can be conveyed acoustically for instance by the teacher snapping the fingers.
