Piano Exotico Barbara Arens, Autorin vieler bekannter Spielhefte für Klavier, hat das Fernweh gepackt. Gewohnt gekonnt und kreativ verwandelt sie die Sehnsucht nach fernsten Orten in 28 Klavierminiaturen. Die rhythmisch abwechs­ lungsreichen Stücke von leicht bis mittelschwer entfüh­ ren junge Pianisten ebenso wie erwachsene Wieder­ einsteiger zu Fantasiereisen nach Indien, J­amaika, Singapur und zu Orten entlang der Seiden­straße. Be­ gegnungen mit Blues, Reggae, Tango und Klezmer ­bestärken unterwegs die Lust, weitere Stil­richtungen zu entdecken – bis schließlich bei den wiederkehrenden Bewegungsmustern der Haiwaiian ­Waterfalls die End­ station der fantasievollen Welttournee auf den schwarz-weißen Tasten erreicht ist.

Barbara Arens, author of many well-known editions of music for playing piano, has been experiencing “wan­ derlust.” Skillfully and creatively as usual, she trans­ forms her longing for the most distant places into 28 piano miniatures. Young pianists as well as grownups returning to the piano have been enticed by the rhythmically varied, easy to moderately difficult pieces to go on fantasy trips to India, Jamaica, Singapore, or along the Silk Road. Meeting up with music such as blues, ­ ­ reggae, tango, and klezmer, encourages the ­desire en route to discover more styles until finally we reach, with the recurring patterns of motion in ­Hawaiian ­Waterfalls, the last stop of the imaginative world tour on black and white keys.

Barbara Arens (*1960) ist passionierte Klavierpäda­ gogin. Im Alter von 13 Jahren begann sie ihre ­Ausbildung am Mozarteum in Salzburg. Es folgte eine Konzert­ karriere vorwiegend als Cembalistin und Organistin.

Nun setzt sie ihre vielfältigen Erfahrungen und Kompetenzen um, indem sie für ihre Klavierschüler ­ kom­poniert. Nach Stationen in Beirut, Dallas, San Fran­ cisco, Singapur, Salzburg, London und München lebt sie jetzt in der Nähe von Würzburg.

Barbara Arens (b. 1960) is a passionately dedicated ­piano teacher. She began her studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg at the age of 13. After a concert career per­ forming primarily as harpsichordist and organist, she now puts her diverse abilities and experiences into composing for her piano pupils. She presently lives near Würzburg, Germany, after living in Beirut, Dallas, San Francisco, Singapore, Salzburg, London and Munich.

Preface

Es gibt ein perfektes Wort für das Gefühl, das aus allen Stücken in dieser Sammlung spricht: Fernweh! Manchmal überkommt viele von uns ein unaussprechliches Verlangen danach, in die fernsten Regionen der Welt zu reisen (zumindest in unserer Vorstellung!)

– so weit weg von unserer wohlbekannten, täglichen Umgebung wie nur möglich. Darum geht es in Piano Exotico.

Die Stücke darin regen uns Pianisten an, in unserer Fantasie in verschiedene exotische Gegenden zu reisen. Der berühmte Maler Paul Gauguin musste erst jahrelang jeden Centime sparen, um die Inseln der Südsee zu bereisen – uns reicht dazu das „Kino im Kopf“, und die Stücke in diesem Heft liefern die perfekte Film­ musik dazu!

Ich hatte das Glück, an vielen dieser exotischen Orte gelebt oder sie bereist zu haben. Das hat es mir möglich gemacht, diesen musi­kalischen Impressionen einen gewissen Grad an Authentizi­ tät zu verleihen.

Ganz besonders möchte ich meiner Klavierschülerin Sabine Reh­ berger danken. Als ich sie nach ihren Einfällen zum Wort „exotisch“ fragte, fielen ihr spontan gleich Dutzende großartiger Titel ein!

Palms in the Wind, Sumatra Rain, Jungle Fever, Le Tigre und vie­ le andere ihrer Vorschläge haben mich inspiriert, diese Stücke zu schreiben. A sheynem dank an Liz Cunningham-Herman für Ein­ blicke in die Welt der jüdischen Musik!

Ich hoffe, dass es Ihnen Freude machen wird, Ihr Fernweh mit Hilfe der Musik auszudrücken!

The Germans have an expression: Fernweh. It describes the unut­ terable longing that sometimes overcomes us for travelling – at least in the imagination! – into the farthest corners of the world – as far as possible from our all too well-known daily rounds. That is what Piano Exotico is about.

The pieces encourage us pianists to wander in our imagination through various exotic spots. But whereas the famous painter Paul Gauguin had to save every centime for years, in order to fulfill his dream of visiting the islands of the South Seas, we can simply enjoy the cinema of our minds – and these pieces provide the perfect film music!

It has been my good fortune to have lived in and travelled through many of these exotic places. This enabled me to give these musi­ cal impressions a certain amount of authenticity.

Very special thanks go to my piano student Sabine Rehberger. On my asking her, “What, for you, does the word ‘Exotic’ mean?”, she came up with dozens of brilliant titles! Palms in the Wind, Sumatra Rain, Jungle Fever, Le Tigre are just a few of the titles which in­ spired me to write these pieces. A sheynem dank to Liz Cunning­ ham-Herman for insights into the world of Jewish music!

Als wir gerade nach Singapur gezogen waren und unser Haushalt noch nicht eingerichtet war, nahmen wir unsere Mahlzeiten im alten Hotel Raffles ein. Meine Mutter bestellte natürlich Singapur Slings, eine Erfindung der Long Bar im Raffles − einem Ort, an dem auch schon einmal ein Tiger unter dem Billardtisch erschossen worden war (allerdings deutlich vor meiner Zeit!).

When we moved to Singapore, we went to the old Raffles Hotel for meals before our household was set up. My mother of course ordered a Singapore Sling, a drink which was invented at the Long Bar of the Raffles – where once a tiger was shot under the billiard table (somewhat before my time!).

Caligo bedeutet auf Latein „rauchig“. Als ich dieses Stück schrieb, stellte ich mir eine verrauchte Bar in Havanna vor. Der Geist von Ernest Hemingway spukt dort vermutlich auch irgendwo herum.

Ein Alap ist in der hindustanischen klassischen Musik eine rhythmisch freie Improvisation. Ich hatte das große Privileg zu hören, wie Ravi Shankar solche Stücke auf der Sitar spielte. Mein Stück gibt nur einen Eindruck wieder von einer solchen Improvisation, denn die Regeln der klassischen indischen Musik sind unfassbar komplex! Normalerweise folgt auf den improvisierten Alap ein rhythmischeres Jod. An Alap is a rhythmically free improvisation in Hindustani classical music. I had the great privilege of hearing Ravi Shankar play such pieces on the Sitar. This is merely an impression of such an improvisation – the rules of Indian classical music are incredibly complex! Dies ist sicherlich die bekannteste aller japanischen Melodien. Das Lied, das die Kirschblüten im Frühling besingt, datiert aus der Edo-Zeit (1603−1868) und wird traditionell auf der Koto, einem von der 21-saitigen chinesischen Zither Guzheng abstammenden 25-saitigen Instrument, gespielt. Die melancholische Melodie beschwört in meinen Gedanken die Schönheit des historischen Kyoto herauf.

This is surely the most well-known of all Japanese melodies. The song, praising the cherry blossoms of spring, dates from the Edo period (1603–1868) and is traditionally played on the Koto, a 25-stringed zither derived from the Chinese 21-stringend Guzheng.

This melancholy melody conjures up the beauty of historic Kyoto to my mind.

In Singapur hatten wir eine Lehrerin für chinesische Konversation, die zwar nicht besonders erfolgreich darin war, mir Mandarin beizubringen, die aber dafür eine Meisterin auf der Guzheng war, einer 21-saitigen Zither. Während einer unserer Unterrichtsstunden hörte ich von ihr zum ersten Mal das beliebte chinesische Volkslied von den Blumen unter dem Vollmond.

In Singapore we had a teacher for Mandarin conversation who wasn’t terribly successful in teaching me Mandarin, but was very proficient on the Guzheng, the 21-stringed zither. It was during one of our lessons that I first heard this popular Chinese folksong about the flowers under the full moon.

Vielleicht liegt es an Madama Butterfly, der berühmten Oper Giacomo Puccinis (1858–1924), dass ich mir das Leben einer Geisha immer tragisch vorstelle. Traditionelle japanische Musik hat ein wunderbares, unverwechselbares Accelerando, das exakt denselben Rhythmus wie ein Tischtennisball hat, der fallengelassen wird und immer wieder auf dem Boden aufspringt, und das ich in den Takten 1 und 21 imitiere.

Auf eine unbeschreibliche Weise wirkt El Escorial, der Palast Philipp II. in Madrid, sowohl opulent als auch karg. Und es ist seltsam: Seit ich den Palast an einem bitterkalten Januartag besichtigt habe, verbinde ich die Erinnerung an ihn mit einem Schneesturm. Die linke Hand spielt in diesem Stück ein viertaktiges Ostinato, eine sich endlos wiederholende Basslinie – nämlich den berühmten Flamenco-Bass. Also: Gitarren-Modus!

Oddly enough, I associate Philip II’s sumptuously austere palace in Madrid with a snow-storm, having visited it on a bitterly cold day in January. Der post-impressionistische Maler Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) hatte eine Vision von Tahiti als dem Paradies auf Erden. Jahrelang sparte er jeden Centime auf, verließ dann seine Familie und erfüllte sich seinen Traum, dort zu leben. Das Hauptmotiv in den ersten Takten stellt die unberührte Reinheit der Natur dar, nach der Gauguin sich sehnte. Sie drückt sich in meiner Vorstellung im Klang der Meeresmuscheln aus, die bei den Polynesiern als Musikinstrument verwendet werden.

Für mich war es ein unvergessliches Erlebnis, in den weiten, dunklen Hallen einer Karawanserei aus dem 13. Jahrhundert einem Tanz der Derwische beizuwohnen, der von einer Oud (einer bundfreien Laute), einer Ney (Längsflöte), einer Tanbur (Langhalslaute) und Trommeln begleitet wurde. Dervishes’ Dance soll kein Versuch sein, türkische Musik zu imitieren, sondern er vermittelt meinen Eindruck von sich langsam drehenden Figuren, die sich allmählich in Ekstase wirbeln, wie es für diesen Tanz typisch ist.

It was an unforgettable experience, witnessing a dance of Dervishes accompanied by the oud (unfretted lute), ney (end-blown flute), tanbur (long-necked lute) and drums – in the vast, dark halls of a 13th century caravanserai! Alle Ähnlichkeiten mit der impressionistischen Klangwelt Claude Debussys (1862–1918) sind, obwohl offensichtlich, nicht beabsichtigt – aber es ist kaum zu vermeiden, einen Wasserfall musikalisch zu beschreiben, ohne wie Debussy zu klingen! Übrigens: Dies ist KEINE Etüde! Die Sechzehntel-Kaskaden müssen nicht alle glasklar gespielt werden. Denke etwa an die Seerosen-Bilder von Claude Monet (1840–1926), in denen auch nicht jede Linie eines Blattes oder einer Blüte detailliert abgebildet ist. Die Finger beim Spielen ungewöhnlich rund zu halten wird hilfreich sein.

All resemblances to the impressionistic sound scape of Claude Debussy (1862–1918) are, though very apparent, not intended – but it’s almost impossible to describe a waterfall without sounding like him! By the way: this is NOT an etude! The cascades of 16ths don’t have to be identically perfect and distinct. Think: Impressionist Claude Monet (1840–1926) also doesn’t delineate every leaf and petal of his waterlilies! She presently lives near Würzburg, Germany, after living in Beirut, Dallas, San Francisco, Singapore, Salzburg, London, and Munich.

Gewohnt gekonnt und kreativ verwandelt sie die Sehnsucht nach fernsten Orten in 28 Klavierminiaturen. Die rhythmisch abwechs­ lungsreichen Stücke von leicht bis mittelschwer entfüh­ ren junge Pianisten ebenso wie erwachsene Wieder­ einsteiger zu Fantasiereisen nach Indien, J­amaika, Singapur und zu Orten entlang der Seiden­straße. Be­ gegnungen mit Blues, Reggae, Tango und Klezmer ­bestärken unterwegs die Lust, weitere Stil­richtungen zu entdecken – bis schließlich bei den wiederkehrenden Bewegungsmustern der Haiwaiian ­Waterfalls die End­ station der fantasievollen Welttournee auf den schwarz-weißen Tasten erreicht ist.

Barbara Arens, author of many well-known editions of music for playing piano, has been experiencing “wan­ derlust.” Skillfully and creatively as usual, she trans­ forms her longing for the most distant places into 28 piano miniatures. Young pianists as well as grownups returning to the piano have been enticed by the rhythmically varied, easy to moderately difficult pieces to go on fantasy trips to India, Jamaica, Singapore, or along the Silk Road. Meeting up with music such as blues, ­ ­ reggae, tango, and klezmer, encourages the ­desire en route to discover more styles until finally we reach, with the recurring patterns of motion in ­Hawaiian ­Waterfalls, the last stop of the imaginative world tour on black and white keys.
