2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT
“ABSOLUTE MUST SEE IN ATLANTA!
I attended over ten Holocaust museums domestically and internationally, and this is among the absolute top! From design, aesthetics, to use of technology, to guiding principles and spirit this is a required see for all who care about humanity.”
- Museum Visitor
Dear Friends, Supporters and Partners, Museums have the unique power to create unity and instill a sense of place by celebrating and honoring a collective heritage. And that is exactly what the founders of The Breman set out to accomplish when the museum first opened its doors in 1996. In 2021, we celebrated The Breman’s 25th anniversary along with the unveiling of our new major exhibition, “History with Chutzpah: Remarkable Stories of the Southern Jewish Adventure 1733 – Present.” The exhibition tells the stories of the many people whose experiences, achievements and perspectives are reflected in The Breman’s expansive archival collections. As you review the “Celebrating Chutzpah!” and “History with Chutzpah” pages in this report, please note the many Breman Heroes recognized on pages 4 and 6 for their incredible contributions of time, energy, and financial support that brought these programs to fruition. We are truly grateful!
Our Holocaust education has expanded beyond Metro Atlanta and the State of Georgia and into other states across the nation and even internationally. Through in person and virtual docentled tours, speakers and events, the Weinberg Center has served more than 8,000 people in Alabama, Georgia, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and England. And over 2,400 students 5th-12th grades in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina, had the opportunity to hear a survivor tell their story.
After several years of relying solely on innovative virtual programs during the pandemic, our live programming is back and better than ever. In addition, we have expanded our reach with performances and events that go beyond museum walls and into the community. For example, The Breman commissioned an original dance from Ballethnic Dance Company based on the exhibition
“A Jazz Memoir: The Photography of Herb Snitzer.” The performance of “Jazzing: Memoirs in Jazz” premiered online in September 2021. A studioproduced recording of the concert performance
“On the Sunny Side of the Street: The Music of Dorothy Fields,” a partnership with The Flying Carpet Theatre Company, was picked up for broadcast by GPB-TV. We have the best of both worlds with live productions and digital content that can be shared, broadcast, and enjoyed by audiences over and over.
We hope you enjoy this annual report detailing the many incredible things that you made happen in the last year. Because of you, we have been and will continue to be a home for Jewish heritage and culture to flourish. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your consideration, time, and investment in The Breman.

HISTORY WITH CHUTZPAH!
Remarkable Stories of the Southern Jewish Adventure 1733-Present
The Breman marked its milestone anniversary with an exhibition that represents the museum’s resilience and staying power. Our exhibition highlights the meaning of chutzpah and how courage and strength truly make a difference in the lives of others. The 250+ artifacts, documents, photographs and oral histories in the exhibition reveal stories of how Jewish Southerners adapted to and affected the society that surrounded them, while simultaneously retaining and celebrating their unique cultural heritage. Enhanced by personal interviews and interactive screen displays, the exhibition also features live theatrical vignettes, performed by local actors and directed by Mira Hirsch, throughout the exhibition period.

LILLIAN AND A.J. WEINBERG CENTER FOR HOLOCAUST EDUCATION
The Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education makes authentic resources on the Holocaust available to the public, teachers, students, and institutions. Through guided tours of the Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years exhibition, oral presentations, educator resources, and the Bearing Witness speaker series, we commemorate the Jewish experience while supporting universal diversity and promoting human dignity.
8,164

6,118 students (grades 5-12) were served through tours and speaker visits. Virtual educational 3D tours of the Holocaust exhibition with a live docent have greatly expanded the program’s geographical reach.
93% of participants who identified as Jewish said that they felt a closer connection to the Jewish community through the event they attended.
96% of attendees reported that they gained new knowledge from attending an event.
This year marked the 57th Annual Communitywide Yom HaShoah Commemoration on May 1, 2022, which included the story of the Memorial to the Six Million at Greenwood Cemetery. This year’s featured speaker was Marsilla “Bebe’ Forehand who, with her family, hid from the Nazis in an attic in Antwerp, Belgium for more than three years. Sen. Jon Ossoff remarked, “It’s moving to see so many of us gathered here to mark Yom HaShoah ... remembering becomes ever more important as time passes between the events of the Holocaust and our time.” The event was jointly sponsored by EternalLife Hemshech, The Breman Museum, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta.

Expanding Access to History
Last year The Breman’s Oral History Project brought in additional project team members who are transcribing and cataloguing new oral histories from our Children of Holocaust Survivors project, Legacy Project, Jewish Oral History Project of Atlanta, Absence of Humanity project, and the World War II Jewish Soldiers project. In addition, we partnered with the Council of American Jewish Museums (CAJM) for their first cohort of the Collecting These Times oral history project where we documented
stories from Atlanta Jews about the pandemic. Now, we are partnering with CAJM again for the second cohort of Collecting These Times to document stories that reflect the current political and social climate of the Atlanta Jewish community. We anticipate this project will allow us to diversify our oral history collection and make it more inclusive and representative of the entire Atlanta Jewish population.
