Calcutta Baroque and Indian Classical music meet under the arches of St. Bartholomew's Church to create a magical theatrical production, set in the early days of contact between British and Indian cultures.

Marking the bicentenary of Haydn's death, this concert features two of his symphonies: the early 'Le Matin' with its exquisite depiction of sunrise, and the 'Trauer', a dramatic and passionate example of his Sturm und Drang period. Other music from 18th-century Vienna includes an aria from one of his operas, Mozart's joyous motet 'Exsultate Jubilate' and his Symphony no. 44, and Gluck's beautiful 'Dance of the Blessed Spirits'.

Gochaq Askerov soloist Aliagha Sadiyev tar performer Elshan Mansurov kamancha player The art of ashigs is an ancient bardic tradition that belongs mostly to the old Turkic World (Central Asia, Iran, Turkey, Caucasus and North-West China). An ashig is a poet, composer, singer, musical performer and occasionally dancer, who beats on the strings of the saz and improvises serenades and ballads. The tradition of Azerbaijani ashigs dates back to at least the 14th Century. Mugham is a traditional musical art form from Azerbaijan. The word mugham refers both to a melodic style and to a genre of traditional music. In this UK premiere tour, Ashig and Mugham music from the Eastern school is performed with 7 musicians

Not content with being described by BBC Radio 3 as ‘the future of early music’ for their cage-rattling reinterpretation of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas, Respectable Groove celebrates Purcell’s 350th birthday with a further development of this remarkable project by collaborating with Gilles Poirier, one of the world’s leading baroque dancers.

‘Much respeck to Respectable Groove, a genre-blending London quartet which uses traditional instruments but gives Purcell’s graceful themes some wily chordal updates. There are 3 ways to buy tickets in advance for concerts promoted by Brighton Early Music Festival, including the free BBC Radio 3 broadcast (event 6): 1. On-line at www.bremf.org.uk You will be given the choice of printing off your own e-tickets (no booking fee) or having tickets issued to you (handling charge £1.00) either by mail or on the door. 2. By post using the form on page 23 (no booking fee) 3. CONCESSIONARY TICKETS These are available to young people (age 12-25 inclusive), those aged 60 or more and those in receipt of state benefits. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge if accompanied by a paying adult. However, a Child Ticket must be obtained. Unaccompanied children under 16 cannot be the responsibility of the festival.

Season Tickets can ONLY be obtained from www.bremf.org.uk or by using the postal booking form in this brochure.
