Nutcracker

Locals star in ‘Nutcracker’ at Lee College By Matt Hollis

The sixth year, I was an older party girl and a cook. This year, I will be an older party girl again, and I will also be Clara this year.” Both of the teenagers have undergone training from some of the best in the ballet world. For example, Grace underwent a summer intensive at the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet in New York City. Both have also trained under Lorna Feijoo, who is from Cuba and has performed with the Boston Ballet, and her husband, Nelson Madrigal. Laura Perez Massague, who trained with Cuba’s National Ballet School and danced with the

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” is the ultimate children’s Christmas fantasy. Filled with toys, candy, lavish scenes and presents, this classic holiday ballet has dazzled audiences of both young and old for over a century. It is once again coming to town just in time for Christmas. The Bay Area Houston Ballet Theatre is having performances at the Bayou Theatre University of Houston – Clear Lake and at Lee College’s Performing Arts Center throughout the month of December. Two local teens are performing in

the ballet, with one taking the lead role of Clara. Taplin Sauls, 13, will star as the girl who receives a special gift in the form of a soldier nutcracker that comes to life to love, protect and do battle for her. Her sister Grace, 15, will perform in the ballet as well. This is Taplin’s seventh year in the ballet and Grace’s eighth year. However, it is the first time that Taplin will play Clara. “My very first year, I was Clara’s cat,” Taplin said. “The second year, I was a little party girl. The third year, I was a ginger child. The fourth year, I was a rat. The fifth year, I was a sentry.

National Ballet of Cuba, has helped train the teens. In addition, Olga Kostritsky, who originated the boy’s dance program at the School of American Ballet and trained Natalie Portman for the movie “Black Swan,” served as another instructor for them. This year’s performance has a special meaning for the teens. Lynette Mason-Gregg, founder of the Bay Area Houston Ballet Theatre, died in October. She was a close confidante to both teens as well as mentor. “Ms. Lynette made the ‘Nutcracker’ very special,” Taplin said. “So, that’s why it is very, very exciting to do Clara.” Grace said “The Nutcracker” was Mason-Gregg’s favorite ballet. “She made it very special to the rest of us,” Grace said. “The party scenes were always so lavish and rich. She changed it so many times just to make it perfect. We want this year’s performance to be a tribute to her. So we are going to put in everything we have. We know that she would love that.” Susan Sauls, the teens’ mother, said that Mason-Gregg’s dreams was to bring performances like “The Nutcracker” out to children out where they lived instead of making them go to places like Houston or New York City to see them. “This will carry on her legacy and keep her dream alive,” Susan said. “It was always about these children, not about her. I see a lot of determination in everyone to make this performance the best ever.” The teens begin to practice for “The Nutcracker” in August. Despite having performed the ballet many times, they always find something new when they do “The Nutcracker”. “Every year there is a new role that you learn, because there is so many roles with different characters,” Grace said. “Each one adds a different touch to the ballet. There is more than 20 characters in it. There is a lot of magic in the ballet.” Susan agreed that the ballet still retains the magic it had since it first was performed. “’Nutcracker’ is the epitome of a child’s wonder of Christmas,” Susan said. “The imaginings that children have of Christmas is captured in ‘Nutcracker’ in an artistic way.” Diversity is something else audiences should expect from this year’s performance. For instance, dancers in the Land of the Sweets dance, where Clara and The Nutcracker are welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy, represent different nationalities. The Spanish dance represents chocolate, the Arabian dancers represent coffee, the Chinese dancers represent tea and the Russian dancers represent candy canes. “It is open to everybody,” Susan said. “It brings people together.” Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at the Bayou Theatre University of Houston – Clear Lake. Performances at the Lee College Performing Arts Center start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. A matinee performance is scheduled at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 21. The Baytown Symphony Orchestra will accompany these performances live. Tickets can be purchased online at www.lee.edu/pac/calendar-of-events or by calling 281-425-6255.

Grace and Taplin Sauls, local sisters, will be performing in “The Nutcracker” this season. Taplin, right, landed the lead role of Clara.

While not common, snow is always a winter dream on the Gulf Coast By Mark Fleming While winter has already roared in to parts of the country, those of us here on the Gulf Coast are asking the perennial winter question: Will it snow? Forecasts are, as usual, mixed. Also as usual, none are especially believable – snow this close to the Gulf of Mexico is usually more of an unexpected quirk than a predicted event. People who live in more arctic parts of the country (like Dallas) don’t quite understand the excitement a dusting of the cold white stuff brings. But, for children who probably wouldn’t recognize mittens, much less own a pair, there’s nothing that quite matches the

8

Horizon Holiday / 2014

magic of the first time being able to make snowballs or even build a snowman. And, with enough snow to do those things coming just every few years, it is often a once-in-a-childhood experience. A look through The Baytown Sun files reflects several snow storms over the decades (and a lot of disappointments when promised snow fizzled into nothing but icy streets). In 2009, schools closed when snow came in enough quantity to play in early in December. It was the earliest recorded snowfall in Baytown in more than 100 years, a front-page story reported. The official measure for Houston that year was less than a

half-inch of snow, though some of the north and west suburbs measured 1-2 inches. It also snowed the year before, in 2008. Before that, 2004 was the most recent, according to a 2008 article. Wanda Orton, always a good source of local history, wrote a column in 2013 remembering 2-4 inches falling here in 1973, closing schools for three days. Orton said that before that, the last big now was 1960, when 4 inches fell. “My Yankee friends always express amusement at the way we view snow,” Orton said. “Well, what can I say? We’re just not used to it, and we think it’s pretty.”

OPERATION

Christmas Child

Baytown residents can help needy kids around the world

Celebration of Life Church in Baytown will serve as a collection site for Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The annual project is a favorite of many Baytown residents, families, churches and groups who help spread God’s love to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, school supplies and notes of encouragement.

12

Horizon Holiday / 2014

“Operation Christmas Child is a fun project that makes a tangible difference in the life of a child facing difficult circumstances. Anyone can participate, whether young or old,” said Regional Director Mark Cooper. Through local collection points, Baytown residents hope to contribute more than 6,000 gift-filled shoeboxes to the 2014 global goal of reaching ten million

needy children. Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has delivered gift-filled shoeboxes to more than 113 million children in over 150 countries through Operation Christmas Child. For many of these children, a gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received. Celebration of Life Church is located at 120 S. Alexander Drive.

Elf on the Shelf a favorite holiday tradition The elf on the shelf has taken over as a new holiday tradition. It is based on a children’s book, “The Elf on the Shelf.” The story explains how Santa Claus knows who has been naughty or nice. The elf visits children between Thanksgiving and Christmas and hides in their home to keep an eye on them. Once everyone goes to bed, the elf reports the day’s events to Santa. Before the children wake up, the elf returns and finds a hiding spot. This creates an ongoing game of hide and seek to the delight of children.

One of my favorite, unattributable shop local quotes is: “You cannot buy happiness, but you can buy local and those are almost the same thing.” When you choose to spend money in your local community, it is highly likely the folks there have similar goals and values to yours; they support the same schools, churches, charities and causes that are important to you. People are happiest where, in addition to all of those organizations being strong, the economy is robust and thriving. The holidays are all about traditions. And helping others. Many years ago the people of Baytown responded to a call to banish sadness among children in this community at Christmastime. They banded together with the sole purpose of making sure that no deserving child was without the things that give Christmas its full meaning. Founded by Sun owner and publisher Bob Matherne, Goodfellows has helped area low-income families every year since 1931. Now into its eighth decade, the annual Goodfellows drive is sponsored by The Baytown Junior Forum.

The Baytown Sun and the Junior Forum in Baytown have a long history of participating in and contributing to the program. The Junior Forum collects money each year to purchase toys for area children – infant to 10 years. Each registered child will receive two age-appropriate toys for Christmas. Over the years, Goodfellows have grown in numbers as the demand for more attention to underprivileged children increased. This year there are more needy children in our community. Their numbers increase as the population increases and the job of Goodfellows becomes more difficult. For these reason, Goodfellows must rise to the chalDonations can be either brought to lenge, which The Baytown Sun means 1301 Memorial Drive in Baytown more Goodor mailed to fel-

lows are needed. All you have to do to become a Goodfellow is make a contribution to the annual Christmas fund. The size of the contribution is up to you. There is no set amount. Whatever you can spare will be appreciated and put to good use. If you have ever participated in the Goodfellows drive, you are aware of the satisfaction it gives you to know you have helped someone else have a truly merry Christmas. Once a Goodfellow, always a Goodfellow is a fitting slogan that has been a part of the drive. Many Baytonians have contributed over the years, a practice that is being continued by their children. We hope you find it in your heart to help those in need this Christmas and donate to the Goodfellows to ensure needy children in the area have a smile on their face Christmas morning. Make your contribution early in the campaign. It will be harder to find the money as Christmas gets closer.

By Eleska Aubespin Christmas season is upon us and there’s ample opportunity to celebrate it with upcoming parades, festivals, pageants and shopping markets. But nothing gets folks into the holiday spirit like a parade,

complete with bright lights, floats and an appearance from Santa Claus. For many years, the cities of Baytown, Highlands, Crosby, Anahuac, Mont Belvieu and Beach City have offered such a spectacle and this season is no different. Among those highlighted is the 2014 Baytown Christmas Parade, hosted by the Baytown Parks and Recreation Department, on Thursday, Dec. 4.The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and over 250 parade Santa’s surprise visit in the Baytown Christmas parade.

Christmas. It’s not too far away and the stores are already bustling with holiday decorations and shopper. One of the best parts about the upcoming Christmas season is decorating. Even if you collect new items every year for Christmas, that doesn’t mean you don’t have room for one or two more beautiful Christmas decorations. Karla Opryshek, a local realtor, also collects decorations. She has lots of favorite things: Family, Jimmy Buffett, friends, Jimmy Buffett, sports, Jimmy Buffett, traveling, Jimmy Buffett and decorating for Christmas. Each year she incorporates them together in her Christmas plans. That plan includes holiday decorations in every room in her home. Opryshek

22

creates a separate theme for every room. She searches year-round for new decorations to mix with the old to make sure no shelf or ledge is left bare. From the Victorian entry to the Margaritaville room and angelfilled bedrooms, she has collected and displayed something for everyone’s fancy. Collectibles are mixed with inexpensive. Friends, coworkers and business associates enjoy attending her Christmas events if only for the joy of seeing her decor. Opryshek and many others now make holiday decorating a family event. Pick a color scheme, mix old ornaments, dishes and florals to create a decorated home to suit your interests and family. Then be prepared to share it with others. After all, it is the season of giving.

His & Hers Christmas is just around the corner, but shopping lists are already a mile long. Figuring out what to buy for all the special people in your life this holiday season is just half the challenge. Finding where to buy unique gifts and presents is the other half. There are plenty of wonderful stores to choose from right at home including big name chain stores. However, before you rush to spend your Christmas shopping dollars at the big brands, consider some of the many independently owned shops and stores right here.

By Alysha Beck The “Tamale Lady” came to Baytown 23 years ago and started selling her homemade tamales to help support her family. As her tamales became renowned within the community, Maria Salazar became known as the “Tamale Lady” and her whole family became part of the tamale making operation. The family was getting so much demand for Salazar’s tamales that in 2005 Salazar, her husband, daughter and son-in-law opened Los Toritos Tamales in Pasadena and later in Baytown. The Baytown homestyle Mexican restaurant serves Salazar’s signature tamales by the half-dozen and dozen in a variety of flavors including pork, brisket, chicken, bean, and cheese with jalapeno. Customers

can order plates to eat in the restaurant or to take out. During the holiday season, the restaurant always runs out of tamales, said Llyda Martinez, Salazar’s daughter and co-owner of Los Toritos Tamales. So she recommends that people preorder their tamales now. Martinez said the restaurants will probably go through about 3,000 dozen or 36,000 tamales over the holidays. She said while tamales are a traditional dish during Christmas for Hispanics, she has seen a lot of non-Hispanics ordering tamales for their Christmas dinners too. While many restaurants in the area make and sell tamales, Martinez said her mother’s tamales stand out. She said part of

that is due to Salazar’s green salsa. “The green salsa is her trademark. Everyone can recognize it. It’s just good salsa that goes with the tamales,” Martinez said. The tamales are also distinguished for their consistent quality. To this day, Martinez said her mother is the only one who makes the tamale recipe. “It’s mom’s recipe and she is the only one that controls it. She’s the one with the good seasoning,” she said. Eventually, the business will be passed down to Salazar’s grandchildren whom her husband Jose affectionately calls “los toritos” or “little bulls.” And the next generation will carry on the family’s tradition.

From left: Rosy Ortez unwraps a half-dozen tamales to plate up with a side of charro beans at Los Toritos Tamales in Baytown. Erika Valladares holds a plate of tamales with rice. The restaurant sells tamales by the half-dozen and dozen in a variety of flavors. Alan Ramos serves up a plate of tamales. By Mark Fleming Baytown Little Theater is moving closer to its new home on Texas Avenue with its 2015 season, producing all of its shows at the Lee College Performing Arts Center. The summer musical will continue to be in the main performance hall, as it has been in recent years, and the other plays will be in the Black Box Theater in the same building. The summer musical for 2015 is “West Side Story.” A classic American musical written and set in the mid1950s, “West Side Story” adapts the themes of “Romeo and Juliet” into a blue collar New York neighborhood. Shows for the season are: • “Rocket Girl.” Feb. 20-22, Feb. 27-March 1. By George Morgan, directed by Kim Martin. (Auditions Dec. 8-9, 2014)

28

• “Comic Potential.” April 24-26, May 1-3. By Alan Ayckbourn, directed by David McKay. (Auditions Feb. 2223) • “West Side Story.” July 24-26, July 31-Aug. 2. Book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, directed by Jim Wadzinski. (Auditions TBA) • “Chasing Waves.” Sept. 11-13, 18-20. By Quinn D. (Auditions Sept. 13-14) • “Steel Magnolias.” Dec. 31, Jan. 2-3, 8-10, 2015. By Robert Harling, directed by Sam Estrada. (Auditions Oct. 4-5). Other than the New Year’s Eve show, all performances are at 8 p.m.

Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The New Year’s Eve performance is a special late performance with dinner and a champagne toast at midnight. Other performances of “Steel Magnolias” will be at the usual times. Tickets for all performances are $15 each, except for “West Side Story,” which are $20, and the New Year’s Eve special performance and dinner, which are $50 ($40 for season tickets upgraded to the special show). The theater is also selling season ticket packages now, which are $80 for a reserved seat for each of the six regular-season shows. This is a $15 savings over purchasing seats individually. There are also sponsorship packages available that combine season ticket purchases with contributions to the theater. For complete BLT information, or to purchase tickets online, visit www. baytownlittletheater.org. You can also call 281-424-7617 and leave a message for a return call. All regular season shows are cast through open auditions. Audition details and a list of needed cast members are posted on the theater website a couple of weeks before each audition. You do not need to be a theater member to audition, but will need to join the theater if cast – the membership fee is $20 for an individual or family or $10 for an individual youth member. Shown in a musical number from the show, Oliver, are (from left) Koni Hovater/Mrs. Sowerberry, Ryan Marshall/Mr. Sowerberry, Maegan Megginson/Nancy and Geoff Starett/ chorus.
