As I sit down to write my editor’s letter for this, our landmark tenth anniversary issue, my mind is swimming with memories from the past decade. Back in 2009, my husband, Brendan, and I set out to launch a magazine that we hoped would inspire couples planning weddings in Devon; that would reflect the creativity of the local wedding industry and, of course, that would celebrate Devon’s beauty as a place to get wed. It’s been quite a journey. We’ve traversed the length and breadth of the county: from the wave-lashed cliffs of the north to the sublime shores of the south; from rocky tors to flowercloaked meadows; from coastal hotels to country houses – and, I have to say, I’ve fallen slightly more in love with Devon with each issue. And here we are, 10 years later! I couldn’t be prouder that Wed is such an integral part of so many couples’ journeys to the altar. It’s a real privilege to be here with you at such a special and significant chapter in your lives. Thank you – to all our readers past and present – who have read Wed, who have shared your love stories with us, and who have sent such lovely messages. We’re a tiny team who pour a lot of love into these pages and your words of encouragement mean so much. Thank you also to Devon’s creative, inspiring and downright brilliant wedding industry. We’re so proud to showcase the work of all the talented photographers, florists, stylists and every supplier who makes this such an extraordinary county to marry in. Thank you for your support and your dedication to what you do. We celebrate Devon on virtually every page of our tenth anniversary issue: our bridal fashion story, for example, ‘What Dreams Are Made Of’ sees a gorgeous collection of dresses photographed in the grounds of Yarner House – a venue that exudes the dreaminess of Devon with its idyllic gardens and farreaching views across rolling hills and wooded valleys. Featuring locally sourced flowers and jewellery inspired by the landscape, the images are full of inspiration for brides seeking a touch of Devon for their wedding day look, as is ‘Made in Devon,’ which showcases the talents of local bridal designers and creatives. There’s so much more, from our pick of Devon’s top hen dos and honeymoons to extraordinary spots to get wed. But it is our ‘Got Wed’ section that really captures the magic of marrying in the county. Hermione and Christian, for example, embraced the wild romance of Dartmoor, while India and Ben threw a sparkling celebration in the incredible medieval setting of Dartington Hall. Crediting her molten, textured style to her early days playing with metal, pushing its limitations and exploring its liquid and fluid forms, she explains how the passage of time and weather over the landscape and waterways all feed her creative spirit. “I’m in love with Devon,” she says. “It’s the county that offers everything – rolling hills, enchanted forests, wild moorlands, sandy beaches and rugged shorelines. It’s where I can take my children fossil-hunting or surfing or jumping off boulders in Dartmoor’s streams.” It’s this love of the outdoors that shines through in her designs. “I spend a lot of time walking, and I can’t help stopping and touching things,” she says. “I am drawn to texture, and cannot help the influence this has on my jewellery and how it looks and feels.” It’s been an exciting year for Erin, having recently launched the Molten Wedding Ring Company, a wedding ring collection that boasts eight styles. Twenty years on and I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.” Erin’s Devon base is the foundation for her ideas, drawing inspiration from the great outdoors to shape the textures and colours of the beautiful rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings in her Erin Cox Jewellery collection. Our favourite trick is to look at rings on the hand, in the mirror. You rarely admire other people’s jewellery from a bird’s-eye position, but from afar.” So for a woman who loves the symbolism, romance and inspiration of the jewellery industry in Devon, what brings her joy when it comes to her profession? “As a goldsmith, my favourite part is the bench time. I have the best view of the Devon rolling hills below my workbench,” she reveals. “I absolutely love the satisfaction of making a piece of jewellery that will bear my hallmark, and hopefully be treasured for generations.”

Popping with colour and bohemian vibes, this styled shoot offers vibrant inspiration for a relaxed and radiant wedding scene. “A lot of our couples want a bohemian-style outdoor wedding but are scared to use too much colour and tend to stick to muted tones,” says Emma of Pea-Green Boat Events Co., who coordinated and styled the shoot. “We wanted to use as much colour as we possibly could.” As well as the palette of punchy shades, eclectic details such as oversized dreamcatchers add whimsy and playful character, while a scattering of cushions and rugs offer an alternative to traditional seating, enhancing the laid-back mood. More is more with the table décor, as multi-coloured chairs and mismatched candles meet tableware in an array of rainbow shades, finished with gorgeous glints of gold. The glorious flowers echo the vibrant medley of colours, as does the three-tier cake with its folk-inspired floral detailing. Do bear in mind that hire suits will take a week or so to be ordered in, and dresses in normal circumstances can take in the region of six months to arrive. So get the ball rolling. If you let the team at the shops know your deadline, they may be able to move things more quickly. For bridesmaids, again, you may find perfect dresses off the peg at a local bridal shop; if not, try the high street. Consider going for mismatched dresses so each of your maids can find something that suits their body shape and taste. JO AND ADAM Engagement to wedding: 4 months “Adam and I met in 1996, when we were eight years old. We got together in November 2013, and five years later got engaged. I always told him I wanted a short engagement – but 15 weeks was shorter than expected! We had a small budget and decided to just go for it! Our wedding took place in April 2019. We had a three-course meal, beautiful flowers, a singer and an ice cream van, and I arrived in a red VW campervan. We totally love pugs – we have three of our own – so we had a surprise pug hidden in the cake! I didn’t find that there were many disadvantages to getting married quickly – everything we wanted we had. My dress was ‘off the rack’ and had to be altered, but that wasn’t an issue. The major advantage is we had no time to faff about and didn’t have time to get overwhelmed… And the wedding itself was great!”

KIM AND MATT Engagement to wedding: 6 months “Matt proposed to me just before Christmas 2017. We knew Tredudwell Manor was the venue for us, and they had availability for the following June. We were so excited to get married we booked it! A six-month timeframe comes with its challenges. In light of the Duchess of Sussex’s family fallouts, we look at how to navigate those guests who may be a little awkward on the big day, be it rival relations, fussy friends, distant cousins or errant other halves words Elizabeth Chester

Meghan Markle has the megawatt smile that says she loves life with her Prince Charming – and why wouldn’t she? Her story reaffirms every little girl’s dream: that magical, fairytale-worthy Happy Ever After. The stuff that dreams are made of. Except while thousands of people across the globe were waving their Union Jacks for the happy couple, there was one very obvious omission from Meghan and Harry’s big day: Meghan’s father. While we don’t know the exact circumstances surrounding his no-show, what we do know is that the relationship between father and daughter is strained – which we know courtesy of her somewhat-disgruntled half-sister’s tweets. There’s no getting around it: families can be complicated. So what happens when some of your wedding guests are a little tricky on the day, if tensions are taut or even if rows break out?

Some things, sadly, can’t be anticipated, and it’s best to prepare for the unexpected. Sometimes a last minute curveball comes in, so try to remember that there is life outside your wedding day and, as painful as it might be, accept any guest mishaps with dignity, grace and a big dollop of understanding. This will limit marring any future relations and, remember, if a family member suddenly drops out of your big day, there are ways to try and include them. Sweeten any bitterness with generosity and a touching gesture – suggest sharing your ceremony via a live streaming service, for example, so any guests who can’t attend can still witness your special day.

On-the-day guest gaffs such as siblings who hit the bar a bit too early or recent divorcees who are begrudging being at your bash can upset the apple cart too, so navigate through these with distraction, distraction, distraction. Charming maids of honour or wily wedding planners can be well placed to flatter anyone who seems to be playing the Wedding Grinch, so you should see any frowns turned upside down.

Fussy friends Friendships, no matter how long-standing, can be pushed to the limit if one side isn’t playing ball. Finicky or critical friends are hard guests to please so make sure they are placed on a table with excellent conversationalists, diplomatic types or someone with a raucous sense of humour to deflect any awkwardness or tension. A good idea is also to nominate a go-to person for any on-the-day niggles that might come up. Whether it’s a wedding planner or a tactful family member, if there’s someone who can deflect anyone in panic mode, it’ll reassure them and you. A friend of recent bride Amelia’s almost ruined her big day by becoming overwhelmingly jealous. “It was completely out of character,” says Amelia, “and took us all by surprise.” The friend failed to acknowledge the star of the show was, of course, the bride, and tried to upstage her all day culminating in a drunken lunge at the microphone during the speeches. “Unfortunately she had recently separated with her fiancé and our wedding day proved too much for her,” says Amelia. But it was nothing that couldn’t be resolved with a gallant best man stepping in to save the day and rescue her from further embarrassment by swapping the wine for water.

Distant dealings Recent bride Isla tells us she had to tell her family her wedding wouldn’t be taking place in the school holidays, on account of costs. But that ruled out family who lived abroad and couldn’t afford to pay for flights or take their children out of school in term time. “The way we saw it, someone had to pay – either us when our venue was at its most expensive, or some of our guests,” says Isla. That’s hard to articulate on the invitations though. “Unfortunately it upset my sister and meant that she came without the rest of her family, but we had to stick to our guns.”

Our advice? When you’re deciding on the details, set your boundaries early. It’s not always best to give people a heads-up in advance or open up the chat for discussion, as that’s when opinions are formed and your guests can start to dictate decisions. If your guests are given a choice, you might find yourself being persuaded towards certain people’s preferences, which makes it hard to stick to your preferred plan. An invitation is, after all, that: a request of someone’s presence. It’s not a group decision across a broad range of family members on when would be the best time for everyone. “My sister made a few grumbles on the day about how much her children who have loved to have been there,” says Isla. “So we FaceTimed them, and my husband and I went to see them as newly-weds en route to our honeymoon destination.”

Particular partners Latest squeezes can make for dicey guests if you’ve only met them once, or never before. But it’s hard to leave friends’ partners out of the equation. And if there’s a right-hand man/woman you’re unsure of, or downright dislike, the boundaries can be tricky. If you really don’t want them there on the day, problem partners can be avoided by letting your guest know that due to size and budget constraints, you cannot include a plus-one for everyone. You could, however, organise an informal pub night after the wedding, where any irksome guests will be more manageable and less worrisome. The noise of your local should drown out any irritating chat! Similarly, bride Kristina had to make the tricky decision to invite her auntie but not her uncle to her big day. “They have been estranged for years, and sadly my uncle cannot be in the same room as my auntie,” she explains. “We didn’t want our wedding day to be the backdrop for a bust-up!” So what was her ingenious solution? They took the wedding to their uncle! “It wasn’t easy but we decided to visit him the weekend beforehand and take the order of service, some flowers, cupcakes, a bottle of fizz and photographs from our engagement shoot, to make him feel a part of the day.” The result? His relief was palpable. “He told us later, after a few champagnes, he’d been worrying about it for months, so we had actually helped him out by eliminating him from our guest list.”

The year grows older, the days get shorter. The sun casts its gentle shimmer across the picturesque gardens of a historic manor house as a bride, bathed in golden light, toys with the silken layers of her gown, a smile playing upon her lips. Inspired by the quintessentially English feel of Midelney Manor, a 16th century Grade I listed manor house with period features and rambling walled gardens, this modern day Jane Austen-esque shoot exudes elegance, grace and femininity, painting a romantic scene for an autumn wedding with a nod to modern-day wedding style. “The manor’s gardens are a suntrap and I wanted to make the most of having this beautiful light available to us,” says photographer, Tara Statton. Embracing the rich colours of the season, the florals showcase a palette of browns, muted pinks and opulent golden hues. The striking wild and textured centrepiece features an array of dried and fresh seasonal elements, including foraged bronze beech leaves, hydrangea, roses and pink tinted garden foliage, while quinces that had fallen from the orchard nestle amongst the soft golden tones of the hand dyed muslin runner. The luxe hand-lettered gold calligraphy and thick paper stock of the stationery echoes the ‘Pride and Prejudice’ aesthetic perfectly, as does the bespoke hand-painted cameo portrait of the bride using muted watercolours and gold shimmering paint that glints in the light so beautifully. The cake, meanwhile, is a crisp white confection, featuring delicate texture and intricately handcrafted sugar flowers and golden leaves. The bride’s sleek gown with pearl detailing continues the classic mood, completed with an eye-catching crown marrying aged gold foliage, vintage detailing and Swarovski pearl flowers. “The centre stone on the crown was originally a vintage amethyst brooch, and I loved the way it’s incorporated into the headpiece as a statement feature,” says Tara. The shorter dress, with its gorgeous beading and full skirt, is accessorised with a faux leather jacket decorated with a ‘Pride and Prejudice’ quote in glittering gold paint, bringing a modern edge to the autumnal scene.

Old Dutch portraits and floral still life paintings serve as the sumptuous inspiration for this dramatic styled shoot at Tawstock Court in north Devon. The venue’s wooden panelled rooms, vast carved mantelpieces and aweinspiring vistas make the perfect canvas for images abundant in flowers, strong colours and delicate natural details. “There is a fine balance in the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age painters between wealthy opulence and something charmingly restrained,” says florist Inky of Inky & Grace. “We wanted to capture this blend of richness mixed with austerity.” The mood is relaxed with elements of real theatre. “We knew that this setting deserved some large floral designs instead of smaller arrangements to create a theatrical feeling, with archways, large urns and smaller vases,” says Inky. The drama continues on the tablescape, where the deep blue silks and rich corals of the runners are offset by buttermilk pale muslins, marbled fabric, coral bowls and plates thinly rimmed with gold. “The Dutch paintings use strong colours – Delft blues, rich oranges, standout yellows and vivid reds. Even the springtime paintings aren’t bright or flooded with light; instead mysterious and darkly lush,” says Inky, describing how the hues influence the mood of the shoot. With a nod to the sugar brought in by Dutch merchant men, the indulgent sugar work of the cake is fitting, its beautifully crafted tulips and roses in warm coral tones against deep blue icing with dragonflies flitting over its sky. At the heart of it all, the bride makes the perfect muse. The form-fitting shape and fine lace sleeves of her fishtail gown makes for a striking silhouette against the architectural drama, while her hair is woven with silk ribbons and dotted with tiny porcelain bees, dragonflies and flowers – elegant in her very own portrait of romance.

THAT LOVING FEELING

A poignant wedding with family and music at the centre, Hermione and Christian’s big day had personal touches aplenty Hermione was living in a shared house after finishing university in Exeter when one of her housemates moved out. “Christian moved to Exeter and responded to an advert for a room in the house,” says Hermione. “He says that as soon as he met me he had a feeling that we’d be together… I didn’t have this feeling but it didn’t take long! I’m a true believer that everything happens for a reason.” The couple were enjoying a trip to London for Christian’s birthday when he suggested they do something involving ‘lots of steps’. “Being pregnant, I wasn’t exactly thrilled, but agreed,” recalls Hermione. A walk along the Thames led them to the London Eye; the pair were escorted into the final pod where a hamper of goodies was stashed inside. “When we reached the top he proposed. Knowing how much I love Christmas lights, it was the perfect December proposal above London in all its beauty!” A poignant ceremony in the church near where Hermione grew up included her old headteacher playing the organ. “It was very special to share that connection years later,” says Hermione, who cites her entrance as one of the highlights of the day. “Walking down the aisle, being able to share it with friends and family was very humbling; the fact that they were all there for us.” The ceremony was as character-filled as it was meaningful. “Father Nick had asked us to share things we love and things we get annoyed at about each other,” she says. “This was so lovely as we only knew what the other had said on the day and he made us gifts to help with what we each found annoying.” Exchanging their vows proved another humorous moment. “Christian found it difficult to pitch his voice at the right volume; he boomed out his vows and it was more robotic than romantic,” she laughs. “My dad commented that it was like a Dalek. We had a good giggle!” Relocating to Ilsington Country House Hotel for their “rustic, pretty, effortlessly classy” reception, guests tucked into smoked salmon and goat’s cheese rolls, duck and vegetable tartin, and spiced treacle pudding, ahead of an entertainment-packed evening of partying. “My brother sung our first dance song. It was so beautiful and an emotional moment – he is a talented young man,” says Hermione of another favourite memory. “Family and friends played the grand piano during the meal, which wasn’t organised!” she adds. While reflecting, Hermione is keen to offer advice for other couples in the throes of planning. “I wrote a checklist, which sounds boring but really helped me organise what I needed to do and not miss the things I wanted. Plus, it’s highly satisfying crossing things off! And although it’s always nice to get other people’s opinions – and dress shopping with my mum and sisters was really special – remember, it’s your day,” she adds. “Whether it’s the dress, suit, venue or honeymoon, it’s your day as a couple and your memories, so it’s your final decision.”

LONG TIME LOVE

Entertainment was thoughtfully provided for every guest at each stage of Katie and Dale’s eclectic wedding Katie and Dale first met while working at the same school together. “The first date is one to be remembered,” reveals Katie. “Dale’s car battery died and I told him I could jump-start it, and nearly ended up writing the car off into a large surrounding of trees. When this didn’t work, we had to call his dad. So I met the parents (well, one of them) very early on!” she laughs. A proposal in front of the couple’s three children in the family home prompted by their song, John Boden’s ‘How Long Will I Love You’, set the tone for their fun-filled and familyorientated wedding at Deer Park Country House. “It was the first venue we visited. We walked in and the pianist started playing ‘How Long Will I Love You’,” recalls Katie. “It was meant to be and we knew it was our venue.” Their colour scheme of blush with a splash of rose gold was carried in everything from the floristry to the film-inspired stationery created by Dale, including a beautiful blush and rose gold foil seating plan. “Each table had a place name from a film and a silhouette of the couple in each, such as Rose and Jack from Titanic, and a romantic quote from the film underneath,” explains Dale. Katie’s trailing bouquet featured menta roses, peonies and calla lilies in ivory and blush, with the blooms also taking centre stage on the tables in martini vases flanked by glass baubles filled with tea lights. After a wet week, the couple were delighted to have sunshine for their outdoor ceremony; the al fresco fun continued with drinks and canapés in the garden, where guests enjoyed games such as Jenga, Connect 4, Buzzwire and ‘hook a flamingo’, as well as a magician and pianist. “It was really important to us that everybody could do and enjoy something, so we went all-out on our entertainment,” explains Katie. As well as a string of performers, this included board games in the lounge and puppetry, balloon-making and face-painting in the drawing room to keep the kids happy. A lip-smacking wedding breakfast of Devon beef brisket crispy fritter, roast chicken breast, and strawberry and raspberry pavlova was followed by the speeches – including a poignant oration by Katie and Dale’s seven-year old son. The evening party treated guests to more sensory delights including pizzas in the garden, a sweetie table, chocolate fountain and photo mirror. Meanwhile, an “energetic” soundtrack by live band, Double A and the Bay, provided one of Katie’s fondest memories from the day. “As busy parents, we don’t get to dance without a nursery rhyme being on! So it was great to share this fun and happy moment,” she says. When it comes to advice for couples in the throes of planning, Katie asserts: “Excel is your best friend. Write down your ideas and root out some costs. Add a budget and see if you are over or under (before you start purchasing). Plus, make sure you add reminders for the important things that need to get done. Book appointments when you are with the people in the initial conversation,” she suggests. “Invite who you want to, not who people think you should,” she adds. “This is a challenging one: family politics are up there with the most stressful. Don’t sacrifice the invites of the people you and your husband spend time with for those who send you a Christmas card.” Having received some devastating news just a few days before their wedding, Katie and Dale are now focusing their efforts on raising money for a very special charity. “My beautiful best friend‘s little boy was diagnosed with leukaemia,” she says. “We are now trying to raise funds for CLIC Sargent (clicsargent.org.uk) in the hope that every child gets the help they need.”

BENEATH THE AUTUMN SUN

Alice and Simon combined their love of autumn, country pursuits and gin with lovingly handcrafted details for a seasonally stunning wedding Alice and Simon first locked eyes during a British Military Fitness outdoor session where Simon was Alice’s instructor, later becoming her personal trainer, before love blossomed. “Simon proposed in North Nibley at the Tyndale Monument, having taken me away to a cottage for our two-year anniversary,” reveals Alice. “Whilst walking our springer spaniels, Simon asked me to take a picture of the view and when I turned around, he was on one knee. My response was “Oh no!” before I, of course, said yes!” Upton Barn & Walled Garden instantly took their breaths away and provided the picturesque locale for their celebrations. “We loved the rustic décor as it looked beautiful with minimal decorations,” explains Alice. “We attended the grand opening of the Stable Barn and were able to get an idea of exactly how it could look on our day. We loved being able to get married on-site and all of our guests commented on the choice of venue.” Reflecting their love of autumn, a striking seasonal scene was created through rich, rustic colours and details such as wooden apple crates to display the seating plan, gin bottles as vases and candleholders, and an array of foliage and candles scattered throughout the venue. “As it was close to Bonfire Night, we had sparklers and marshmallows for the evening,” adds Alice, who also hand-made the salt dough Christmas tree decoration wedding favours and blackberry and apple gin for the tables. A collaborative effort culminated in the final look, including confetti made by Alice’s school friend Meg, a friend’s daughter making personalised bunting, and one of Alice’s students creating a canvas timeline of the day with hand-drawn illustrations as well as writing all of the place cards, while Simon pitched in to create place card holders from empty shotgun cartridges. Meanwhile, the flowers incorporated lots of foliage with burgundy and blue blooms, which were also carried in Alice’s bespoke hairpiece, with pheasant feathers woven into the buttonholes to add extra character. More magic was added by the couple’s friend, Tayla Martin, who sang and played guitar during the reception as guests tucked into canapés and Prosecco. A sharingstyle feast followed, comprising slow-roast pork belly and slow-roast heritage squash with a smattering of sides completed by platters of baked blackberry cheesecake, macerated berries and almonds roasted in honey. “It is so hard to choose a favourite moment but, for me, walking down the aisle and reading the vows that we had written in front of all our friends and family and the bright blue skies and sunshine in November had to be it!” says Alice while fondly looking back at her rustic romance. “We also loved the dancing in the evening – terrible dance moves to fantastic live music!” During her moments of reflection, Alice is also keen to share her planning methods. “We booked things very early and didn’t leave things to the last minute, which meant that the run-up to the wedding was less stressful,” she says, before adding: “A good spreadsheet is a lifesaver!” She also advises asking suppliers for their recommendations. “Also, we looked at some DIY venues but soon realised that we had neither the time nor creative flair and so chose a venue with a fantastic team who offered support in planning and delivery.”

DOUBLE THE DELIGHT

Anastasia and Gideon’s wedding saw a blessing and starlit evening reception in the ruins of a church followed by a personality-packed ‘Alice in Wonderland’ party “The plans were grand and ambitious, with Gideon serenading ‘All of Me’ on a big white piano,” says Anastasia of Gideon’s lofty proposal ideas. “In reality, I threw a tantrum on a Tuesday morning saying ‘Our relationship is not going anywhere’ at which Gideon looked at me and, without saying a word, went to his desk and got a black box out, where I found my gorgeous emerald engagement ring!” Choosing to throw a three-day wedding celebration, the couple selected a series of venues for each stage of the festivities, the first being St David’s Church in Ashprington where they were officially wed before enjoying post-ceremony drinks and classic British canapés at neighbouring pub, The Durant Arms. Everyone then relocated to the hilltop ruins of Holy Trinity at Buckfastleigh, formerly Gideon’s family church, for the couple’s blessing ceremony and starlit evening reception. Guests feasted on Russian dishes, as a nod to Anastasia’s roots, such as borsch soup and beef stroganoff, in the beautifully atmospheric setting ahead of an elaborate ‘Alice in Wonderland’ party the next day. Anran at Tidwell Farm provided the blank canvas to stage their themed celebrations, with The Prop Factory helping to create a striking ‘Wonderland’ inspired space for the couple to fully indulge their imaginations. “Guests were asked to wear black or red, like a deck of cards,” says Anastasia. “On arrival, each guest was given a card from the deck as they entered through a giant keyhole, and this separated them into a card suit that they would belong to for fun and games.” From stilt walkers and live music to a fire show and Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, the day was an entertainment-packed adventure that culminated in a silent disco, which proved the perfect endnote to a brilliantly charismatic day. “For most guests, it was one of the biggest highlights – all suspicions about a silent disco being lame have vanished and we had so much fun!” comments Anastasia. The third day of festivities saw guests gather for a recovery barbecue at the same venue. “Don’t get frustrated with tasks that don’t seem to be falling into place. Leave them, do something else and come back to them in a few days – your day is going to be perfect and you don’t need that extra stress,” Anastasia offers as her first word of advice. “Take a marriage course,” she sagely adds as her second. “It may sound silly, but it’s one of the best ways to prepare yourselves for life ahead, and a very helpful way to learn more about your love languages, to tackle some conversations that perhaps you haven’t had before and understand each other in new ways. And at the wedding, make sure to find time for each other,” she continues. “It can be so overwhelming being the centre of attention of all of your guests that you may neglect each other and miss out on some brief yet magical moments alone.”

Diamonds, dappled sunlight and a surprise fireworks display created a resplendent scene at India and Ben’s quintessentially English wedding India and Ben first met at Cardiff University and became engaged during a walk past India’s favourite place: an old mast point on a headland in Dartmouth. “He disguised it as a ‘pub walk’,” says India. “We sat on the bench that is hidden there and I was so excited because I thought he was going to ask, until he said ‘Shall we go then?’ and my heart dropped! Then just as I was walking back to the path he said: ‘Indie, you’ve dropped something…’ and I turned around and he was on one knee! I think the whole of Dartmouth might have heard my scream!” Opting for a quintessentially English wedding with “timeless, romantic and luxurious” keynotes, India and Ben’s late summer celebrations beautifully reflected the changing seasons with a warm colour scheme of dusky pink and gold. Donning a dazzling dress featuring more than 17,000 hand-stitched beads and diamonds, India emerged a bridal princess as she approached her groom, who stood proud in his naval officer’s uniform at St Petrox Church. “Our ceremony was the most special part,” India reveals. “Neither of us had given it much thought; so much planning goes into the partying afterwards that you kind of forget about the most important bit! It was so romantic and beautiful in the church, and walking down the aisle to see Ben at the end is a moment I will never forget!” Following their nuptials, the newly-weds enjoyed “much-needed” bubbles during the drive to the venue. “It was nice for us to reflect and have some of our first alone time to laugh and cheer!” says India. Canapés and cocktails were savoured in the sunshine alongside an atmospheric jazz duo in Dartington Hall’s gorgeous gardens as the sun started to retreat, providing India and Ben with one of the most cherished memories from their day. Night-time was welcomed with a sumptuous feast comprising Brixham white crab, cured salmon gravadlax, and Vulscombe goat’s cheese starters, followed by sea bass fillet, Devon local lamb rack and pan-fried Creedy Carver duck breast. Sticky toffee pudding, strawberry panna cotta and a selection of Devon cheeses provided the perfect sweet and savoury finish. “We then danced all night,” says India. “The Drat Pack was honestly the most amazing band! They got the whole wedding party up and dancing and singing along. We also kept our fireworks a total surprise for everyone, which was awesome when we got everyone outside.” A barbecue the following day continued the celebratory spirit while allowing the newly-weds to spend precious time with their guests. “There are so many people, it’s nice to spend more than five minutes with them and spread the celebrations over the weekend!” comments India, who also suggests stealing some time away as a couple during the festivities to take it all in. “Before dinner, take a moment to go away – just the two of you,” she says. “You won’t get a single moment like this again on the day so make the most of it and watch over all your guests having the most beautiful time!”

A NIGHT LIKE THIS

Sammy and CJ’s winter wedding featured seasonal flourishes including a firepit, sparklers, roaring open fire and bellywarming mulled wine “Despite both being from Plymouth and living here our whole lives, we actually met at a wedding in Cyprus!” says Sammy of her serendipitous first encounter with CJ. “We sat next to each other during the wedding breakfast, and as they say, the rest is history!” A Christmas Day proposal took place in utterly romantic style when Sammy opened one of her presents: a cardboard box with a note inside saying ‘I’m on the tree’. “We went downstairs and there was a bauble on the tree with a red bow around it with a ring box inside. I turned around and CJ was down on one knee!” With no particular style in mind for their winter wedding at Hotel Endsleigh, the couple planned their day based on one thing they didn’t want – a Christmas-themed wedding! “We wanted everything to be really neutral: nudes, creams and greens, with fairy lights and candles for the lighting. Our wedding breakfast was solely candlelit. It felt so special,” says Sammy. Choosing a mid-afternoon ceremony meant that Sammy and CJ also plumped for a new pre-ceremony tradition. “Due to losing the light early, CJ and I decided to do a ‘first look’, where we saw each other before the ceremony and had some photos taken together in the gardens,” says Sammy, who then walked down a candlelit aisle to wed CJ under a beautiful floral archway. Canapés, mulled wine, winter Pimm’s and an open fire greeted guests prior to the wedding breakfast in the stable block, which comprised starters of butternut squash risotto with rocket, aged parmesan, smoked haddock and pumpkin seeds; mains of slow-cooked blade of beef with bone marrow crumb, creamy mash, potato, kale and heritage carrots; and classic sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream for dessert. A spectacular three-tiered ‘winter wild’ cake featuring lemon and elderflower sponge with raspberry coulis, fresh raspberries and blueberries; chocolate and Guinness cake with toasted pecans and salted caramel; and spiced carrot cake layered with clementine marmalade and candied oranges completed the day’s fabulous array of flavours. An evening of dancing around the firepit with sparklers and Irish jigs to the sounds of Black Friday kept the party spirit alive well into the early hours. “All our guests were on the dance floor,” recalls Sammy. “It was such a high energy, happy night!” When asked about one of their favourite parts of the day, Sammy highlights their first dance – doing the Irish jig ‘Galway Girl’ by Steve Earle. “It’s not your traditional type of first dance song but it’s a song we love and it fitted with our wedding perfectly,” she says. “Try not to get too stressed and enjoy the planning process, it will all come together just as you want it to,” she says, urging other couples to adopt a laid-back approach whenever possible. “And everybody says it but it’s so true – take a moment to take it all in on the day together as a couple, because it goes by in the blink of an eye!”

ODE TO LOVE

With performances from family and friends, and character-filled details galore, Jo and Tom’s country wedding brimmed with fun festival vibes “Tom proposed whilst we were hiking in the Spanish Pyrenees,” reveals Jo of her surprise engagement. “We were walking through a gorge and stopped for a banana break. I couldn’t find my banana so I was rooting around in my bag for ages when I heard Tom clear his throat. I turned around and he was down on one knee with a ring box open.” Choosing Wonwood Barton for their celebrations, the venue offered the dream setting for their “relaxed, country style, festival vibes” theme, courtesy of the stunning rural views that were maximised by a clear marquee. Echoing the mood, the floristry was a simple yet striking medley of colourful wild flowers and foliage: Jo’s bouquet included matricaria daisies, freesias, gypsophila and rosemary, while the bridesmaids clutched bunches of daisies and the tables were dotted with jam jars of yellow freesia, purple stocks, blue delphinium, solidago and clematis. The arrangements perfectly complemented the wooden décor and props made by Jo’s aunt, including an oversized photo frame, wooden games, memory ladder with pictures of lost loved ones and blanket holder. The ceremony at Tavistock Parish Church was another personalised affair, with Jo making her grand entrance to Jack Johnson’s ‘Do You Remember’, which was performed by her aunt’s wife and two of her friends. “It was super relaxed and very joyous!” she comments. Following their first journey together as husband and wife in a VW camper stocked with Moet, the newly-weds arrived at Wonwood Barton to take in one of their favourite memories from the day. “It was so nice to look around seeing everyone enjoying the free bar and the homemade games my talented auntie had made, like stilts and the hoop game,” recalls Jo. Canapés and speeches were followed by informal dining delivered by two food vans, which treated guests to the likes of slow-cooked Dexter beef, ‘manapés’ such as black pudding, chorizo scotch eggs and salt cod croquettes, and vegan dishes including spiced organic seitan kebabs. “People were sat in the sun on hay bales drinking rosé and cider, then my German family put on a funny play (a German tradition) which resulted in me doing a German shot and Tom downing a German weissbeer!” adds Jo. The evening comprised the cutting of the cake – an artistic creation by Jo’s friends representing her mountain-top proposal – as well as scones, pasties, more live music from Jo’s family, and a dance floor-filling set by band, Sons in the Wild. “The speeches were all incredible and hilarious. Tom ended his speech by handing out some German shots, which were our favours,” says Jo of another personal highlight from “the best day of our lives!”. “I would say don’t sweat the small stuff!” she offers as a word of advice to other couples keen to strike a similarly relaxed tone at their wedding. “We truly didn’t get too stressed about the decisions we needed to make, and tried not to look at too many options as you just get overwhelmed! As long as you have food, drink, good music and the people you love there, then the day will be perfect!”
