Wed Magazine Devon issue 59

Page 1

It is almost midsummer as I sit to write this letter and wedding season is in full swing. Our social media feed is full of gorgeous weddings, our inbox is filling with submissions and newly engaged couples are registering for a copy of Wed as they set out on their own journey to the aisle. From the couples basking in the glow of their just-engaged status to the newlyweds reflecting on the dreamiest of days, it is a real privilege to be part of this process and immerse ourselves in beautiful love stories played out against the epic landscapes of Devon.

You’ll find many joy-filled love stories in this issue. The south Devon coast made a sublime backdrop for Sophie and Henry’s spring celebration at Gara Rock, while the wildflower meadows and leafy orchards of Harefield Barn truly shone on Charlotte and Max’s sun-drenched wedding day. It might have been the depths of winter, but the epic rural panoramas of The Horn of Plenty, on the edge of Dartmoor, offered captivating romance for Stephanie and Ash. Then there’s Lottie and Charlie, who tied the knot on a crisp winter’s day in the lush rural setting of Upton Barn.

Our styled shoots take us from the glorious, colour-pop vibes of Summer Punch, captured in the seriously stunning setting of Pynes House, to the flower-filled beauty of Seasons in the Sun, where The Oak Barn makes the most romantic rural backdrop. Wild at Heart draws on the natural canvas of Wooladon Estate, with its new barn and acres of idyllic countryside, to inspire free-spirited W-day style. And a tucked-away garden, set amidst the rhododendrons at Moreton House, presents a pretty floral canvas for The Secret Garden.

For couples dreaming of embracing the beauty of Devon with a wedding under canvas, there’s inspiration for a breathtaking tented celebration in Pitch Perfect. There’s also drinks and favour ideas with a local flavour, expert guidance for a ceremony to remember and trending styling ideas from those-in-the-know.

You’ll find some brilliant advice in 24 Tips From Real Couples, where recently married couples share their words of wedded wisdom to help you relax and max out every second when your own big day dawns. My own advice? Take a quiet moment to yourselves to savour the joy of it all. And always bring flat shoes to change into!

bridalbuzz HOUSE BY THE WATER

Plymouth’s hippest haunt, Pier Master’s House, can be found teetering over the water at the ocean city’s historic Barbican, blending location with the building’s beautifully restored interiors for a wedding replete with the wow factor. Jutting into the sea at the end of the pier, the restaurant-bar seats 300 and includes three balcony areas, a large deck with outdoor covered seating and two floors of indoor seating – making it a stunning and versatile all-season choice for every type and size of wedding. Exposed wooden beams, painted stone walls and wooden floors evoke a rustic-chic look, which can be styled to be as pared-back or dressed up to suit, while the oceanic surrounds are framed by lightfilled windows and doors that open up to reveal marina-wide views.

Presenting two packages, couples can pick from the all-inclusive option (available Sunday to Thursday for a minimum of 50 guests), which includes a hog roast, drinks selection, evening buffet and DJ; or the Sunset Package (available Sunday to Thursday for a minimum of 60 guests, 6pm-midnight), which features a welcome drink, buffet and DJ. What’s more, both packages can cater for more guests (charged per head), with the Sunset Package also available on weekends for a supplemental charge. For a city wedding by the water at one of Plymouth’s most lust-have locations, Pier Master’s House is a magical choice.

IN THE CHIC MIDWINTER

Never underestimate the wonder of a winter wedding. Full of romance, drama and magical, candlelit moments, a celebration during the colder months is perfect for couples seeking a cosy affair full of atmosphere. And it’s difficult to imagine a dreamier setting for a winter wedding than Boconnoc Estate, which is currently offering a 20% discount on winter dates in 2024 and 2025 at the sublime country house venue.

Boconnoc House presents an idyllic winter wedding bolthole. Expansive Georgian rooms give a feeling of space and grandeur, and voluminous windows mean the surrounding countryside floods into the four reception rooms, giving a sense of light on even the greyest of days. Add to that luxuriously appointed bedrooms, roaring fires and the chance to plan candlelit décor, and you have a seasonal celebration rich in glamour and romance. The 800-year-old church is a mere stroll from the main house, its Gothic architecture the perfect backdrop to candlelight and winter florals. If you’re planning a civil ceremony, choose the wood-panelled, deep red walls of the Smoking Room or the expansive airiness of the drawing room. The Garden Room is a beautiful space for a wedding breakfast with large windows on three sides and views across the parkland. You can choose trestle or round tables, chiavari or cross-backed chairs and let your creativity take the lead on florals, place settings and a winter-inspired menu.

The estate can be hired for a weekend wedding during the winter months of 2024 and 2025 at a special rate of £13,560 for two nights, including accommodation for 40 guests – saving £6,000 on summer hire, while you’ll have your first pick of caterers, florists, photographers and other wedding suppliers whose availability will also be more favourable at this out-of-season time.

GARDEN PARTY

For couples with visions of a rural romance, Uphill Farm Walled Garden & Barn is the stuff of dreams. Located in a pretty idyll on the edge of Dartmoor, the garden party venue is set amidst the grounds of a 500-year old Grade II listed farmhouse. An historic stone barn with views across the Tamar Valley and a picturesque walled garden make for stirringly beautiful settings to take your vows; there’s also a choice of churches in the area, including St Andrew’s Church in nearby Buckland Monachorum. Surrounded by mature trees, lush lawns and colour-pop flowerbeds, the garden also makes an idyllic setting for marquee receptions.

Hosting weddings on Saturdays from May-September, only a small number of events are held here each year, allowing couples to enjoy the grounds at their most beautiful, while allowing the small team to get to know each couple and take a personal approach to each celebration. Accommodating between 70 and 120 guests, couples can design a day to suit their vision, using the venue’s props to style the spaces, including trestle tables, peacock chairs and lanterns. Food is a top priority for the farm, which produces charcuterie from their own free-range rare breed pigs. Enjoy a customised cocktail menu and garden games before a bespoke feast cooked from the open fire kitchen; then gather around the firepit and toast marshmallows beneath the starry Dartmoor skies for an atmospheric endnote to a truly magical wedding.

summer punch

Bright colours, summery vibes and fun-filled moments are the keynotes of this dazzling wedding scene at Pynes House

photography Laura Rosemary Photography styling & coordination Knots & Kisses

From the exquisite gardens to the beautiful, light-filled interiors, Pynes House offers the most enchanting blend of history and romance for an exclusive-use wedding in a tucked-away corner of the Exe Valley. And, while muted shades look gorgeous amidst the easy elegance of the country house setting, colour lovers needn’t be afraid of embracing a bold and beautiful palette – as this styled shoot illustrates.

“Embracing the hot colours of summer with bright pinks, oranges, mustards and accents of pale pink and gold, we went full-on floral with masses of beautiful brightly coloured flowers, which stood out against the beautiful architecture,” explains Nikki Sherriff of Knots & Kisses, who coordinated and styled the shoot. This is most striking at the entrance to the house, which is styled with abundant blooms in a palette of punchy hues to create a breathtaking ceremony backdrop. “Flowers framed the entrance and cascaded down the steps to perfectly frame our couple and their gorgeous dog,” says Nikki. “The colours of the shoot continued through to the beautiful rose gardens for photos and drinks, and lots of fun in the pink photo booth, which we added some casual seating to.”

The joy-filled shades carry into the Dining Room, where a table dressed with pink and mustard linen, gold candlesticks with colourful twisted candles, beaded white chargers and origami-style place card menus creates a captivating canvas for the celebrations. The theme continues with a summery menu featuring dressed salads and vibrant tarts, handpainted cakes crowned with stunning sugar flowers and bright and playful stationery.

The brides’ daytime looks – structured and stylish shoulder-baring gowns teamed with a handmade ceramic flower crown and sweeping veil – nod to the classic elegance of the venue. For the evening, the couple don sparkly dresses with corseted bow details, high ponytails and statement earrings –embracing a glamorously playful mood for a modern, fun-filled celebration in this luxe country house setting.

wild at heart

The rural romance of Wooladon Estate, with its sprawling grounds and new rustic barn space, provides a naturally beautiful canvas for boho-chic gowns and free-spirited styling

photography & coordination
Rabbit House Studio Photography

Straddling the Cornwall-Devon border, where the banks of the River Tamar greet the River Lyd amongst 500 lush acres, Wooladon Estate provides the picture-postcard backdrop for this ethereal editorial, which showcases the country venue and its new wedding barn to inspired effect. The former cowshed has been transformed into an enchanting celebration setting, with high ceilings, rustic beams and stunning chandeliers casting a soft glow upon the polished floor and warm wooden panelling.

In keeping with the close-to-nature charm of the venue, a bohemian, free-spirited mood carries throughout the shoot. Dried florals in sand, cream and pale pink tones with rich accents of green and russet complement the barn’s exposed wooden structure and rural canvas. Simple macramé chair sashes are paired with pew end posies of gypsophila, pampas grass and sprigs of foliage, while the accessories continue the pared-back, petalpretty aesthetic with bouquets, buttonholes, flower crowns, floral fan and fedora all adorned with textured blooms.

Then there’s the dress code. A fitted, lingerie-style bodice with billowing long sleeves and skirt sets the boho vibe; a low-necked A-line with botanical embroidery detailing another exquisite example of modern-whimsical bridalwear. A shot of glamour is achieved with the transformational evening wear, detachable sleeves revealing the seductive cut of the corset top and dance-worthy tulle skirt. The hair and make-up are equally as eye-catching: a high, halfbraided flowing ponytail with tendrils and long loose waves completes the coolly low-maintenance bridal vision. Meanwhile, the groom’s pale pink chinos, crisp white shirt and brown loafers epitomise the look of laidback charm carried throughout.

From dreamy dresses to seriously chic veils, here’s our pick of the latest bridal must-haves

GO FOR GLAMOUR

A new designer label has landed at The Ivory Lounge in Plymouth –and we’re seriously in love! Inspired by the harmony and balance of neoclassical art and architecture, Élysée embraces modern silhouettes to accentuate the figure and contour the shape of the body. Each gown exudes timeless beauty, combining intricate lace, dramatic trains and standout designer details.

Azzurra is a stunning example of the Californian label’s signature style, its seductive mermaid silhouette lavished with beaded floral lace, sequin Chantilly lace, side cut-outs and a beautiful train with a sculpted hem. Alessia also twinkles with shimmering lace, its plunging necklace and train adding a swoon-worthy finish. For fans of minimalist fashions, Gloriana’s structured Mikado mermaid gown marries a deep sweetheart neckline with a sculpted bodice for a fabulous, figure-hugging statement. With more gowns arriving in October, brides seeking glamorous W-day style with a modern edge are sure to be captivated by the collection.

Timelessly beautiful gowns by Ellis Bridals also grace the rails of the luxe boutique, while those envisioning a relaxed, modern look will love the latest dresses from Kelsey Rose, ranging from ethereal beach-ready frocks to contemporary cuts with detachable sleeves and bows.

For brides seeking a bargain, the boutique is currently running an unmissable sample sale where all Vera Wang Bride and Randy Fenoli gowns in-store have been reduced to £1500. From fashion-forward designs to achingly chic gowns dripping in detail, each gown promises to make a showstopping statement on the big day.

We introduce four of the top-trending looks to help you get started on your search for ‘the one’...

new romance

Rebecca Ingram, Pirouette

Minimalist

Part of the pared-back movement that continues to beguile bridal designers the world over, balletic accents join simple fashions for super sleek wedding styling.

From classic ballet pumps to long-sleeved boleros worn over fitted dresses, styles that show off the figure whilst playing with paredback design features fit the balletcore and minimalist aesthetics.

Think clean necklines, including square, high and halters (or their new antithesis: the curved neckline), along with elegant shift and column frocks – that might also sport a side or centre slit. Up the ’90s minimalism with a touch of tailoring (sharp or softly oversized) such as with a blazer, jacket, suit or coat – or opt for a modern twist via a fitted or flowing jumpsuit.

Separates – along with one-shoulder and off-the-shoulder gowns – smack of structured elegance, while fluid fabrics and drapery, including cowl necks, relax the trend with modern grace. Meanwhile, corsets remain one of the most coveted must-haves, taking a multitude of lust-worthy forms including exposed boned bodices, fitted tops, tie-up corset backs and embellished bustiers.

Fabulous florals

There’s nothing passé about florals, whose constant evolution marks it as one of the most wanted bridal wear features for many of today’s and future collections to come.

From modern floral laces in oversized blousy designs to intricate appliqués and abstract embroideries, the details can be as subtle or statement as you please – with one floral feature or a mash-up of flowery accents showcasing the petal-pretty trend.

High-octane looks include texturised 3D florals, rose-shaped bodices, silk organza flowers, oversized floral motifs and canvas-like colourful print dresses, while more muted versions such as floral lace bustiers, botanical beadwork, floral trims and hand-drawn embroidery all add a hint of flowerinspired style.

Statement skirts

Skirts are very much back in the spotlight, and there are a few hot favourites guaranteed to secure your showstopping moment.

Statement overskirts have been parading the catwalks of late, ranging from layered tulle numbers and reams of ruffles to voluminous A-lines, pleated styles and peplum waists.

Then there’s the ballgown, whose comeback sees structured styles alongside bulbous skirts and maximalist designs all appearing in collections awash with the classic fairytale silhouette.

At the other end of the spectrum, short and midi-length styles are still high on the hot list, with leg-baring micros causing as much of a stir as calf and knee-skirting numbers with danceready appeal.

Extra style points can be achieved with colour –particularly blue, blush and black skirts – along with feathers, pearls, bows (shoulder and back) and a scattering of silver sparkle.

Exposed elements

Not quite as risqué as previous seasons, skin-baring styles are seeing something of a resurgence on the runway, but this time with a high-fashion edge.

Tiny cut-outs – particularly side and waist – join sexy backless and scoop backs, deep plunging V-necks and illusion panels for wedding dresses of the most head-turning, but still demure, variety.

Nude lace beautifully nods to the trend, while side and centre slit skirts maintain the penchant for leg-flashing dresses that hark back to screen siren Hollywood glamour.

If you’re seeking a contemporary, statement-making piece, peekaboo panels are the lust-have feature to look out for, with sheer strips appearing everywhere from the skirt and bodice to the neckline as the soseductive alternative to full-on nude styles.

getting personal

Justin Duance

Although the personalisation trend isn’t exactly new, it is finding original and evocative form through wedding bands. From engraving to gemstones, metals and design, there is a plethora of ways to make your rings entirely and uniquely your own.

Perhaps you’ll pick a piece from your favourite jeweller and customise a couple of elements to make it as oneof-a-kind as your love, or co-design (and even handmake) every aspect of your bands from scratch. However involved you want to be, today’s wedding ring collections and designer-maker collaborations allow couples to beautifully up the ante when it comes to the personalisation factor…

Engraving

One of the easiest ways to literally stamp some individual meaning and design onto your rings is by engraving them. Imprinting and inscribing personal sweet somethings, hand-drawn pictures, fingerprints, motifs, names and dates instantly bolsters the bespoke impact. Pick monograms, a poignant line of poetry, emblem, hidden diamond or place name to adorn the inside – or even exterior – curves of your bands to ultra memorable effect.

Gemstones

You might wish to select a ring with your favourite stone, customise your bands with a gem of your choosing or ice your design with a smattering of diamonds. Consider colour, cut, size, source and placing to perfect your personalisation. From single stones set in the centre of your band to giant, attention-grabbing rocks, glamorous halos, canyon and eternity rings, the options are practically endless. Think ocean-blue sapphires, forest-green emeralds and blood-red rubies along with more unusual coloured and shaped gemstones made even more personal by picking your birthstone, repurposing family treasures or a gem with symbolic meaning such as garnet for loyalty and passion.

Metal

Depending on your budget, personal preferences and whether you’ll be pairing your wedding band with your engagement ring, the metal you choose can lend an array of looks, textures and significance to the overall design. From rose, white and yellow gold to silver, platinum, palladium and titanium, there are plenty of options with various properties, so discuss them with your favourite jeweller during the whittling

down and design phases. Mix metals, recycle heirloom pieces and sentimental gold, and select your own materials to ensure they’re crafted in the most hyper-personalised way possible.

Design

Both the main design elements and final flourishes can characterise your wedding rings, and range from shape and texture to pattern and finish. ‘Making methods’ such as sandcast and lost-wax cast rings can create unique pieces that merge the jeweller’s signature style with your chosen aesthetic, while additional materials such as wood and gemstones can individualise everything from texture to shape. Pattern can also be achieved through the use of different tools and markmaking techniques such as Japanese kinks which – when combined with the minutiae such as profile, width and finish – will result in tailor-made rings gorgeously reflective of you both.

You have the suit – now complete your wedding outfit with on-trend and unique pieces to complement your big day style

CUFFLINKS

One of the easiest ways to personalise your ensemble is by picking or commissioning a pair of cufflinks to individually suit. From monogrammed and motifs to gemstones and unique shapes, allow your fancies to be your sartorial guide. Available from Michael Spiers, Montblanc’s aviator-inspired Le Petit Prince cufflinks represent mentoring and father-son relationships, while Deakin & Francis’ cool blue golf bag cufflinks inject a sense of fun. Then there’s Tateossian’s unique blend of pattern, shape and design, courtesy of everything from moonstone cufflinks in rhodium silver to sharp geometric and ammonite designs. Nomination’s classic cufflinks from Allum & Sidaway bring a simple, statement-making charm, while Erin Cox’s textured creations lend a lust-have dimension to your look. Marrying near the sea? Opt for Justin Duance’s sandcast cufflinks; alternatively, choose the wood inlay for his square cufflinks, with options ranging from larburnum, mahogany and Dartmoor oak to a piece of your own.

JEWELLERY

A bit of bling is no longer the sole reserve of the bride, with more grooms opting to wear wedding jewellery. The Gucci interlocking silver pendant is a luxe choice for wedding day wear, while the Unica 18ct white gold bracelet from Fope features the brand’s elegant signature mesh design - both are available from Michael Spiers. Nomination (available at Allum & Sidaway) maximises wearability with the likes of its stainless steel lava stone Instinct bracelet and cross necklace with black diamonds; the Giovanni Raspini silver and onyx cubes bracelet also makes a striking statement. For grooms seeking something with an organic, handmade feel, Justin Duance’s collection of wood and sandcast pendants, rings and cufflinks evoke au natural style. BOW TIES & POCKET SQUARES

One of the easiest ways to inject additional personality into your outfit is through your choice of tie, bow tie or pocket square. Combine colour, pattern and texture for a multi-layered look or opt for pared-back, premiumquality items for more understated allure. Favourbrook’s honey douppion silk bow tie (and matching handkerchief) will spruce up a black tie or complement a summer shindig, but anything from its extensive accessory range will fit the debonair bill, from spot grey pocket squares in 100% silk or linen to ties in paisley prints, geometric designs, micro dots and floral motifs. Add a printed scarf for boho dandy, braces for preppy pizzazz or a cravat and cummerbund for a sense of occasion. For a contemporary take on pattern, Francis + Louise’s eye-catching wedding tie collection will elevate every ensemble. Colour block with Hackett’s linen asymmetric dot handkerchief or tone it down with its striped seersucker version paired with a tie from its range of plain, striped, polka dot and checkerboard in an assortment of fabrics and hues.

House your finishing touches in suitably chic style. Made with faux leather and velvet, Stackers has some stylish options to keep your jewellery, watches and accessories protected. Choose from a watch wrap, watch and cufflink box or suit bag, which conveniently doubles as a weekend holdall, for an inspired gift idea for your groomsmen.

Evoking a sense of season’s change and natural beauty, rustic interiors draw upon the surrounding rural setting for a spellbinding wedding scene at The Oak Barn photography Mimosa Photography coordination & styling Jess Baber, Tide the Knot Wedding & Event Planning

Set amidst rolling meadows and hills in the heart of Devon, the idyllic grounds and historic, charm-filled barns of The Oak Barn is a dream venue for couples seeking rural escapism and palpable romance for their wedding day. This air of romance is beautifully captured in this styled shoot, which, styled with luscious greens and pastel tones accented with delicate gold hues, offers a modern aesthetic in a timeless setting. “The idea was to capture the essence of the venue’s surroundings, complementing the season as spring turns into summer,” explains Jess Baber of Tide the Knot Wedding & Event Planning, who coordinated and styled the shoot.

The florals take centre stage. Blending seamlessly with the sublime country estate, a series of installations demand individual attention while drawing the eye to the towering treescapes beyond. A pair of floral pillars preside over the couple’s al fresco vows, while mini troughs spilling with small flowers adorn the pew ends. Inside, an assortment of colourful arrangements spliced with greenery are scattered across floor and table, contrasting beautifully with the bare-walled blank canvas of the barn. Meanwhile, the ceremony pillars are repurposed to create a flower backdrop for the top table, which is made all the more dazzling by a hanging lighting installation.

The petal-pretty detailing continues with the signage, cake – which features a selection of delicate stems and voluptuous buds – and, of course, the beautiful bridal bouquet in a palette of sorbet pink, soft mango, clotted cream and deep berry tones.

Used both to blend into the shoot’s aesthetic and as a standout element, the outfits nod to the bloom-filled venue, with the groom’s buttonhole accentuating the warmth of summer alongside his two-piece complete with burnt orange tie and pocket square with animal motifs.

The bridal wear presents modern-meets-classic looks.

A floral lace top with silk skirt and simple chignon oozes pared-back chic, while a flowing floral overskirt and bulbous detachable sleeves scream high-octane romance. Finished with a floral headband, block heels and floral chandelier earrings, the result is a lust-have lookbook of covet-worthy styles. As the sun sets on the shoot, the warmth of the season is conveyed through the deep romantic aesthetic, giving way to the promise of everlasting summer.

the secret garden

Steal away to an enchanting idyll tucked away amidst the rhododendrons of

Moreton House in north Devon
photography Maria Broome Photography | coordination Kimberley Speed venue styling Helen Phillips

A Georgian stately home on the outskirts of the ancient port town of Bideford, Moreton House offers elegance and enchantment in abundance, with its charm flowing from the interior through to the dreamily romantic grounds. Accessed via a leafy tunnel, the Secret Garden is a clearing hidden inside a 150-year-old rhododendron stand, which feels blissfully away from it all. “Throughout the year the shrub provides a dense evergreen backdrop; in late spring or early summer there’s a stunning display of mauve flowers, literally buzzing with activity,” explains owner, Helen Phillips.

“The neat Georgian proportions, plasterwork and panelling of Moreton House mean it is usually associated with a more formal and traditional style of wedding, but in this case, we wanted to show that we have lovely grounds too, and can offer a relaxed, informal boho-style outdoor space in our Secret Garden,” she says.

This styled shoot took place just as the buds were showing the first signs of colour and the team drew on the garden for inspiration, painting a picture of effortless elegance, filled with naturally beautiful and seasonal, sustainable and vintage details. The hand-painted watercolour florals and wild British birds of the wedding stationery sets the mood for the secret garden theme beautifully. The rustic wooden gazebo is styled with flowers and foliage cut from the garden, simple toile drapes and vintage style bud vases, bunting and tea lights, creating a romantic setting for an intimate ceremony.

The bride dons a selection of gorgeously individual gowns, all carrying the botanical theme, from a fishtail with a petal print to an ethereal A-line embellished with floral lace. Embroidered with wildflowers and a striking peony design, the veils capture the essence of spring and summer, echoing the gardens, as do the delicate organic headpieces, dotted with leaves, florals, crystals and pearls. The hair – a mermaid-style plait and relaxed half-up style with gentle waves – and natural, glowing make-up complement the soft, boho mood.

The natural cascading bouquet of spring garden favourites, including forget-me-nots, hellebores, bluebells and honesty, is the perfect pairing for the garden setting, while a more formal gold and white bouquet echoes the more structured silhouette of the fishtail gown.

Marrying a stately home venue with a relaxed bohemian mood highlights the versatility of Moreton House, which can stage everything from a Bridgerton-esque country house wedding through to a back-to-nature garden party in this enchanting corner of north Devon.

MAKE CEREMONY MAGIC

From the setting to the soundtrack, ensure your ceremony is the personality-packed pinnacle of your day with this advice from the experts

It’s time to get personal. Though love is a universal phenomenon, there’s nothing conventional about any relationship, so make sure your wedding is as individual as your love story with a unique and personalised ceremony.

An immersive and participant-led event not only expresses who the couple are as people, but also presents a fun, energy-filled and entertaining interlude as memorable and magical as every other part of your wedding.

It’s the perfect opportunity to surprise your guests with a bespoke and heartfelt first act that leads seamlessly into the celebrations and whets their appetite for what is yet to come with a so-you ceremony replete with the wow factor.

words Hannah May

“Weddings are a celebration of love and unity. So why settle for a cookie-cutter ceremony when you can sprinkle it with personalised symbolic gestures?” asks Sabine Smith from Perfect Day Ceremonies (perfectdayceremonies.co.uk), who works closely with couples to add “some oomph to your nuptials with gestures as unique as your relationship itself”.

“As you plan your wedding, think about incorporating unique and meaningful gestures that reflect you and your love story,” she says. “With an independent celebrant by your side, you can make sure your ceremony is as personal as you both are.”

“The ceremony is the reason for the whole day of celebration and it needs to be a reflection of you as a couple,” agrees Denise Whitehair from Cornish

Celebrants (cornishcelebrants.co.uk). “There is no right or wrong; it’s your day, so have the ceremony you want!” she implores.

Here, Sabine and Denise share their expert tips for personalising your ceremony to perfection...

Location location location

Plan every element of your ceremony, including the day, time of day and venue. You might fancy a sunrise ceremony as the light emerges in the woods, a sunset ceremony as the sun sinks below the waves or a midsummer’s midday vow exchange atop an ancient Celtic hill fort.

Of course, there are certain limitations should you choose a religious ceremony and building, but with

Olivia Rossi Photography

the law recently relaxing to grant licensed venues in England to host civil ceremonies outdoors, legally tying the knot has never afforded couples so much choice when it comes to the ‘where?’. Meanwhile, the endless scope and freedoms of a (non-legally-binding) celebrant-led wedding means you can stage a ceremony (practically) anywhere.

“Why not surprise guests with a non-traditional ceremony location that holds a special meaning in your relationship?” suggests Sabine. This might be on the beach where you became engaged, the park where you love to walk the dog, or even in your own back garden. Your favourite tearoom/ theatre/bar/gallery could all be potential ceremony venues – so think about the size, type and season of the event to create your shortlist. Just remember to first check who owns and operates the land or building, and to seek permission or officially hire it if required, and to think about the practicalities such as access, amenities and distance to the reception venue.

Once you’ve landed upon your perfect location, deliberate the logistics of the layout and space. “Thinking of entering together?” asks Denise. “Why not have two aisles and join at the top? Have the seating in a horseshoe arrangement – it feels like your guests are wrapping you in love.” Circular ceremonies are all the rage, while more unusual layouts such as squares, spirals and meandering aisles all up the bespoke factor of your ceremony.

Consider every element of the guest experience too: what will they see/hear/smell/eat and drink during the ceremony? This could take the form of scented flowers or candles, or a naturally fragranced venue (an orangery, a vineyard or an allotment). Pre-ceremony drinks, live music (or the soundtrack of the ocean or birdsong) and informal nibbles, drinks stations or waiters weaving with trays throughout will spoil yours and your guests’ senses. Don’t be afraid to playfully prioritise your whims over standard practice and traditions.

Style to suit

Dress your day to dazzlingly idiosyncratic effect. Pick a theme and go wild, or use the natural surrounds to style your space. Add areas of interest and comfort, such as an outdoor lounge area, a play tent for children or mobile drinks van along with entertainment such as a live artist, mixologist, vocalist or musician who can serve and perform at the beginning and during intervals in proceedings. Think about the ceremony as an instrumental part of the celebrations rather than a separate, more formal part – and let your personalities and preferences shine through.

“Colour your ceremony, from the flowers to the flags, and add an arch as a focal point,” advises Denise. “Are you going rustic and outdoors? Have coloured blankets on your hay bales or, for a more formal approach, coloured sashes on the chairs.” By selecting a unique colour scheme and using it in creative ways throughout your ceremony venue, you’ll add another dimension and element of character to ensure a personalised scene.

With the addition of props, furniture, signage and décor all in your preferred aesthetic (festival style, vintage, colour-pop brights, monochrome, pared-back...), the ceremony space will look and feel like ‘you’ for maximum individual impact and memorability.

Content is key

When it comes to content, wedding ceremonies offer up a surprising amount of flexibility for couples keen to exercise some extra creativity. Religious ceremonies and civil ceremonies (not civil partnerships) legally require an exchange of vows, along with the signing of the marriage schedule or document. Civil ceremonies can’t feature any religious content, while celebrant-led ceremonies can essentially contain whatever the couple want – so discuss all the various options with your officiant.

Nowadays, more couples are opting to write their own vows, which is the easiest way to make the ceremony unique. “Keep them secret from each other until the day,” suggests Denise. “Take inspiration from favourite poems or song lyrics, adapting them to suit. Keep to three or four vows each, and remember that your audience is listening too! A little humour is a nice touch, but don’t overdo it. Try and look at each other as you say your vows or wow everyone by singing your vows!”

Readings can follow the same individualistic suit. “Don’t stick with the tried and tested!” implores Denise.

“Find readings that relate to you as a couple, such as about your joint activities or places that you love. They don’t have to be recognised as a reading; sometimes a paragraph from a favourite novel or song lyrics works well. Choose someone to read them who is confident and willing to do this for you.”

There’s a host of other ways in which extra personality and originality can be infused into your ceremony.

“Symbolic gestures during a wedding ceremony carry immense significance, adding a certain depth and meaning to the overall celebration of love,” says Sabine. “One such practice your celebrant might suggest is the lighting of unity candles, where the couple each takes a separate candle and together creates a single flame symbolising their union. This act serves as a metaphor for their commitment to support and uplift one another throughout their journey and to make the light of the marriage shine.”

“Some couples might want to opt for more unique gestures like handfasting ceremonies or sand-blending rituals, each embracing its own symbolism to represent the joining of two souls,” she adds. “Your celebrant will be delighted to help you choose the colours of your special ribbons or the sand to match the colour of your birth month. These creative touches will not only make your guests swoon with delight, but will also weave an irresistibly witty tapestry into the fabric of your big day,” she says.

Otherwise, think about tailoring every element to your own fancies, from the timings to the traditions. For example, you might wish to start with a song or a reading as guests arrive or launch into one as soon as the vows have been spoken. “Don’t be afraid to update conventions,” says Denise. “Do you want the traditional ‘giving away’? Why not update it to a welcome from both families welcoming their son or daughter’s partner? Or if Dad still wants his moment with his daughter, change the question from ‘giving away’ to ‘presenting’. It’s also nice to add a reflection moment

Olivia Rossi Photography

Grace Elizabeth Photography

for family members unable to attend or who’ve passed away.”

Consider having some ritual to enhance the meaning of the ceremony and add joy and laughter to the proceedings.

“Some favourite ones are hand-tying with ribbons for your vows, a ring blessing – where all the guests have a chance to hold your wedding rings before they are placed on your fingers – a sand ceremony symbolising the togetherness of a new family, a Quaiche ceremony (Scottish loving cup) or a tying of the knot to finish the ceremony,” says Denise. “Talk with whoever is leading the ceremony to develop a completely unique approach for a ritual of your own, possibly including faiths, beliefs and working with religious leaders.”

People and pets

Though your wedding is a tribute to you, it’s also a celebration of the plethora of loves in your lives, from your favourite food, flowers and music to the people. Find a way to incorporate the things that you adore for the ultimate in personalised ceremonies.

“Involve everyone,” says Denise. “From joining in with voicing support for the couple, participation in a ring blessing, singing, chosen guests acting as ring-bearers, bringing and placing ribbons over the couple’s hands in a hand-tying, repeating a well wishing to the couple, writing messages of love and support for the couple’s future and placing them on a wishing tree – the options are endless.” By finding different ways to include a range of guests, you can create a personality-packed, meaningful and wonderfully sentimental ceremony filled with love.

Tap into the talents of your friends and family, such as with a musical performance, circus tricks, a postceremony speech or dance performance. Think about the roles for any children that are present, from flower girls and poetry recitals to guest book attendants, candle lighters and sign-bearers.

And don’t forget your fur babies! “Pets at weddings have become a popular trend over the years, and it’s easy to see why,” observes Sabine. “From dogs dressed as ringbearers to cats lounging around the venue, pets add an element of joy and light-heartedness to the occasion. Not only do they bring smiles to everyone’s faces, but they also make for adorable photo opportunities. Remember though, having pets at weddings requires careful planning and consideration,” she warns.

“It is essential to ensure that all guests are comfortable with animals and that there are no allergies or phobias involved. Moreover, pet owners must take care of their companions’ wellbeing throughout the event, providing them with enough food, water and breaks outside if necessary.”

Ask a trusted friend or engage the services of a professional dog nanny for a stress-free and unforgettably sweet experience for all.

in the know

With 2024 weddings underway, we’re looking at décor styles that are set to be seen at weddings next year and beyond. “2025 wedding styles are all about embracing individuality in your wedding look, with an emphasis on breaking tradition and opting for something a little different,” says Hazels Parsons of Out of the Ordinary Weddings We’ve asked some wedding stylists and planners for their input on the top style trends, so you can use their guidance to inspire and shape the look and feel of your big day…

Soft pastels

Dusty blue and pinks with soft fabrics, textured napkins or table runners will make for a relaxed romantic vibe complemented by fine dining touches. Think crystal glassware, delicate candlelight, vintage tableware, understated stationery with script fonts and gentle flushes of colour. Draped ceilings with plentiful layers of white fabric will bring a romantic, timeless feel

[Photography Checkered Photography, Styling & event hire Out of The Ordinary Weddings, Flowers Perdie’s Flowers]

Vibrant hues

We’ll see a bright burst of sunny colours, like orange and hot pink, mixed into the stationery, bridesmaids’ dresses, ceremony flowers and wedding tablescapes. This look works beautifully for flower installations, bud-heavy table flowers and bold ceremony backdrops.

Sage and rose

A twist on a more traditional wedding style, this look has an English country garden feel to it. It works well on full-length luxe table linen or rustic wooden tables paired with a sage table runner, brass candlesticks, rattan charger plates, white crockery and oversized vintage rose napkins. It’s such a versatile style you can choose minimalistic décor with accents of colour or opt for a fuller look with layered fabrics, tall candlesticks and sculpted flower arrangements.

White and green

From layers of colour to layers of texture throughout the wedding look, incorporate shades of green into your wedding attire, invitations and stationery and continue it through to your flowers and table décor. This look can have a contemporary feel to it: sophisticated, glamorous and elegant.

Mismatched patterns

As with trends in interiors, clashing and mismatched patterns and a maximalist feel has been making its way into wedding trends too. The best way to go about this is to choose a colour scheme. In the case of our Amalfi Summer look (left), it’s varying shades of blues, yellows and whites; clash patterns within that colour scheme so it doesn’t look too much. For the Amalfi shoot I clashed a blue and white stripe, blue chintz floral and a Mediterranean tile pattern also in blues.

Fabric displays

Fabric is back in a big way. But rather than fussylooking swags of material or a ruched marquee ceiling, think more about elegant drapes, either hung from the ceiling or a backdrop and in a variety of colours rather than just ivory or white! Lots of venues, especially barns and tents, will have opportunities to create hanging displays that can help bridge the gap between your table décor and the ceiling height, making spaces feel more intimate and cosy.

Bright colour pops

Colour is back and, going forward for 2025, we’re going to see even more bright pops of colour – the brighter the better! Don’t think anything of combining hot pinks, mustards and oranges with pale pinks and golds like we did for the Summer Punch styled shoot (page 14). The trick is to not feel afraid of lots of colour; it works in so many spaces. Just because you’re getting married in a manor house doesn’t mean your wedding has to be neutrals and blend into the walls. The trick to using lots of colour is the same principle as always: pick a couple of shades as a base colour palette that you’ll use more often and then add two or three accent colours which will just pop throughout the scheme.

Statement table plans

Rather than just a simple printed board, think outside the box when it comes to your seating plan for 2025! Use old shutters, like we did at Hayley & Mike’s wedding (left) to hang individual tables on, or create bespoke displays on plinths, hang fabric table plans from frames or create a large escort card display rather than a single table plan. We’re doing several plans this year with escort cards tied to champagne glasses and displayed on shelving and bespoke units.

Big, bold florals

Start with a ceremony jam-packed with all things floral! Goodbye standalone floral arrangements and traditional arches, and hello grand flower installations that line the aisle taking centre stage. When following trends, sometimes it’s easy to get lost in what’s in keeping to you, but that’s what we love most here –you can change it up to suit your style, colour scheme and, of course, your favourite florals. Flower power at its best!

Jewel tones

In 2025 we’ll be seeing some bold, fun and vibrant shades popping up. Be bold and beautiful by selecting jewel tones for your day: think rich shades of emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red and amethyst purple. Carry these across your table linen, flower arrangements, glassware and much more. Have fun and don’t be afraid to be playful with it as this is a great way to add energy and personality to your day.

Shimmer

If you’re looking to incorporate a touch of sophistication and luxury to your big day, consider adding in some gold, rose gold and copper for those metallic accents. This can be across your tablescapes, your stationery or even bring in some shimmer through your bridesmaids’ dresses. Introduce a sense of opulence with the use of these metallics and create a chic and contemporary feel to your wedding day.

All natural

We will also be seeing a nature-inspired trend in 2025 as the use of foliage-heavy styling returns, while adding in some warm terracotta, earthy greens and soft blues across the décor and florals. The lush greenery and earthy-toned blooms are perfect for outdoor ceremonies and rustic-inspired weddings.

PITCH PERFECT

Celebrating under canvas makes for the ultimate personalised party space. Here are some dazzling ideas for creating an unforgettable setting for a wedding

Light up the night

If you’re planning on celebrating into the small hours, it’s important to carefully consider your lighting throughout your tent. Whether it’s uplighters, fairy lights or festoon lights, create a magical feel at nightfall.

Fill your wedding with florals

Whether you’re envisioning a sophisticated scene, styled with an abundance of white roses, or a wildflower meadow feel, with colourful stems dotted everywhere in mismatched vessels, flowers are key in creating a so-you space. We love how these tree centrepieces create height and a gorgeous statement in this marquee.

Go all-out for greenery

From a back-to-nature vibe to high-octane glamour, foliage is as versatile as it is impactful. The combination of fresh greens and crisp white florals look particularly striking against the ivory canvas of this Tipi Spaces’ tipi.

Draw the eye up

Hanging floral installations are trending – and it’s not difficult to see why. Not only do they look beautiful, hanging pieces create a sense of height and can free up space on your tables. Think dreamily romantic clouds of gypsophila, dried flowers for a boho feel or foliage dotted with blooms and suspended with floating tea lights.

Choose a beautiful location

Whether you’re drawn to rolling countryside, wooded glades or sweeping views across the ocean, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to naturally stunning locations here in the South-west. Set up your tent in a sublime spot, like this stretch tent from Skybar Weddings, perched within touching distance of the sea in West Cornwall.

Create a festival feel

If you have plenty of space and a large guest list, then a series of structuresperhaps including a bar, chill-out tent and kids’ tent - will create a festival vibe where guests can mingle and roam throughout the course of the celebrations. Add colourful flags, a glitter bar and live music for a party to remember - and how about a naked tipi for the ceremony?

Prettify the poles

Don’t overlook your tentpoles. Make them part of the design by decorating them with foliage, flowers, fairy lights or ribbons – or you might even make them look like trees by adding branches.

Work with nature’s palette

Embrace the natural beauty of your location. This foliage-filled installation picks up on the lush colours of the rural surroundings while the hues of this tipi wedding blend beautifully with the coastal location.

Think about your seating

Your choice of seating can have a big impact on the way your wedding looks as well as how it feels for your guests. Wooden crossback chairs blend effortlessly into a range of styling schemes and benches bring a laidback vibe. We love these stylish seating booths from Skybar Weddings, while these striped deckchairs are ideal for a seaside celebration.

Add fun touches

Inject fun into your party space with playful details. These colourful paper lanterns pop against the canvas of this Tipi Spaces’ tipi, while these combinations of streamers, lanterns and glitterballs scream party!

Create chill-out spaces

Your guests will thank you for creating a comfortable zone to take some timeout during the celebrations. Consider snug sofas draped with cosy throws and piled with plump cushions; add tables and plants for a relaxed living room vibe.

Up the elegance

Choosing a tipi wedding doesn’t mean you have to opt for pared-back styling. You can still embrace an elegant aesthetic, as this World Inspired Tents’ tipi illustrates with its crystal glassware, tapered candles and romantic florals.

Dress your space with drapes

Play with soft draping to add instant luxe to your tent, while making it feel intimate and cosy. Whether you opt for swathes of sheer white fabric or colourful draping to enhance your palette, it can be used anywhere in a range of styles to create the aesthetic you’re seeking, from ethereal to glamorous.

TYPES OF TENTS

From stretch tent to tipi, we’re crushing on these cool canvas options…

Traditional marquees

It’s difficult to resist the elegance of a traditional marquee. Its classic style combines wooden poles, natural canvas and large Georgian arch windows to usher in views across the countryside for a timelessly beautiful celebration.

Stretch tent

Versatile, contemporary and super-stylish, stretch tents are made from an incredibly strong and stretchy waterproof material to give a fabulously freestyle structure that can be erected in a variety of locations and spaces.

Clear span marquees

Offering brilliant flexibility, the clear-span is a top choice for hard ground and trickierto-get-to locations. Its framework of aluminium poles and white PVC presents unrestricted space inside, as well as strong weatherproof credentials to boot.

Tipis

As visually stunning as they are brilliantly flexible, tipis can be linked together to create the perfect sized space for your event. You can lift the sides on a summer’s day for an open-air celebration or cosy up amidst firepits and fairy lights in the winter.

DO ME A FAVOUR…

From edible treats to personalised keepsakes, choose wedding favours that your guests won’t leave behind

Traditionally, wedding favours symbolised good fortune for the couple. A small bag containing five sugared almonds that represented love, health, happiness, fertility and a long life together would have been gifted to each wedding guest. Nowadays, wedding favours come in a

Love is sweet

From traditional sugared almonds to colour-themed pick ’n’ mix, say a sugary thanks with individual bags of sweets. Make more of your sweetie favours with a dedicated candy table, where guests can help themselves to jars of sweets and fill a paper bag with their favourites.

Make a meaningful donation by purchasing charity pin badges as your wedding favours and spread awareness of your chosen charity.

Tasty treat

Sweet favours always go down a storm at weddings, so why not add an irresistible iced biscuit to each place setting. Choose icing in hues to match your colour scheme and emboss each biscuit with your (or each guest’s) initials and wedding date for a personal touch. Your wedding cake maker might be able to make the biscuits for you, wrapping each one individually to keep them fresh.

Let love grow

Gift your guests a favour that will flourish long after the wedding day has passed with personalised packets of wildflower seeds. When the flowers bloom, your guests will remember the love and joy shared on your wedding day while watching the butterflies and bees flitting from flower to flower. The perfect blend

For tea enthusiasts, consider decanting loose-leaf tea blends into little tins or glass jars and finishing them with a personalised label displaying the words ‘Love is brewing’ above your name and wedding date. Guests can savour the memories of your wedding day as they sip their cup of tea.

From when to start getting ready to how long to allow for the wedding breakfast, here are some top tips for organising your timeline so you can relax and enjoy the day

words Becci Clubb

With so much going on and so many people to please, planning your wedding day timeline can feel confusing or overwhelming. Naturally, every wedding is slightly different, with couples omitting certain elements or including something unique – like surprise singing waiters or spectacular fireworks! But many elements of a wedding day are almost always included, such as the drinks reception and wedding breakfast. Based on 60 day guests, we’ve plotted a guide on wedding day timings to help you plan the flow of your special day, from dawn until dusk…

Bridal beauty

Start your day bright and early, giving yourself plenty of time to enjoy the morning with your best friends. The timings for hair and make-up should be confirmed with your stylists, but generally, you should allow at least an hour per person for make-up and the same for hair, depending on the complexity of the styles. Decide in advance the order each member of the bridal party will sit in the make-up chair so that you all know who should be where and when, ending with the bride. Factor in some extra time for unexpected delays, exchanging gifts, photographs and keeping the morning stress-free.

Groom’s preparations

While the bridal party is often the focus, the groom and his groomsmen also need time to dress, style and enjoy a bit of camaraderie. This typically takes less time than the bridal preparations. The boys need to ensure there is a schedule for showers, shaving, dressing and adding finishing touches like cufflinks and buttonholes. Usually, the groom and groomsmen are dressed and at the venue before the guests start to arrive.

Guest arrival

Guests should begin arriving at least 30 minutes before the ceremony start time. This window gives them ample time to briefly say hello to one another, find their seats and settle down before the bridal party arrive.

Wedding ceremony

In your order of events, plan an accurate amount of time for your wedding ceremony. Civil ceremonies often last around 30 minutes, with a maximum of three readings. Religious ceremonies generally last an hour as they also include prayers and hymns.

Confetti moment

After the ceremony, allocate 10 minutes for the confetti throw. It takes a few minutes to get everyone into place before you walk through an aisle of confetti. Your photographer might capture a big group photograph of all your guests and possibly a few family photographs straight after the confetti moment before guests disperse too. This quick session captures the joy of the moment without keeping guests waiting too long before the reception.

Quiet time

Schedule 10 minutes away from the crowd as newlyweds immediately after the confetti moment.

Taking this time allows you to absorb the joy of your nuptials privately – accompanied by some refreshments and canapés!

Drinks reception

Start this at the same time you have your quiet moment. Allow between an hour-and-a-half to two hours for the drinks reception. This part of your day might include welcome drinks, canapés, more group photographs, couple’s portraits and mingling with your guests. Entertainment such as music, garden games or a magician can create a fun atmosphere and keep guests engaged.

Take a seat

When inviting guests to take their seats for the wedding breakfast, decide in advance if you would prefer a formal greeting line or a direct call to take their seats. A greeting line can take about 30 minutes and allows you to say hello to each guest individually. Alternatively, guests can be invited to take their seats without a greeting, which takes around 15 minutes. With both options, the couple is formally announced into the room once everyone else has sat down.

Wedding breakfast

For a traditional plated wedding breakfast, estimate around two hours for a three-course meal to be served and enjoyed. Two hours allows time for everyone to finish each course before the plates are cleared, ensuring everyone savours the dining experience without feeling rushed.

The speeches

Speeches usually round off the wedding breakfast. If those making a speech are particularly nervous, you might opt for the speeches to start before the meal. Bear in mind, that you will need to give your caterers an exact guide on the timings to avoid overcooked dishes or a delay in food service. Typically, speeches last for about 30 minutes. The traditional line-up includes the father of the bride, the groom and the best man, who should each speak for roughly 10

minutes. Nowadays, the ladies are taking to the microphone, too. So if you, your mum or your maid of honour want to say a few words, adjust the timings accordingly.

Cutting the cake

Deciding when to cut the cake will depend on the structure of your day. Some prefer doing it immediately after the speeches, announcing it during the last speech. Others choose a later time during the evening reception, particularly if you want evening guests to join you for this celebration.

Evening guest arrival

As evening guests start to arrive, leave yourselves a half-hour break in your timeline to greet them. Whether it’s a formal or informal greeting, welcoming evening guests usually coincides with a drink and leads nicely into the evening reception.

Bouquet throw

This tradition can be a fun moment to capture on camera. Gather your guests to watch the bouquet toss before the dancing begins. Consider if you have people in the crowd who will be willing to catch the bouquet; if most of your guests are already married, you might be short on participants.

First dance

Whether you choose a slow dance or a choreographed routine, the first dance is a spotlight moment when the newlyweds take to the dance floor and kick off the party. Decide if you want to include a formal fatherdaughter dance or a mother-son dance at this time, too.

Party time

The band or DJ will keep the music pumping from the first dance, with guests throwing shapes on the dance floor. During the evening reception, there are plenty of extra entertainment options. From casino tables to a photo booth, treat guests to a night of fun once all the formalities have finished.

Evening food

After an hour or so of dancing, top up everyone’s energy levels by serving the evening food. Whether you opt for a grazing table, pizza slices or fish and chip cones, keep your guests fed and watered to keep the party lively.

Time to sparkle

Once darkness falls, ask your guests to join you outside for a sparkler moment. Walk hand in hand as newlyweds under an arch of twinkling sparklers for romantic photographs.

Carriages

Finally, designate an end time for the celebration. Setting a clear time for carriages or transport arrangements helps ensure that the day concludes smoothly without any confusion.

TIPS FROM REAL COUPLES

Handy hacks, must-do moments and awesome advice from those who’ve learnt lessons from their own wedding planning

Whatever you read, hear about or wish for your wedding, the fact of the matter is those who have been through it before are the ones with the best advice. There’s nothing like a lived experience to help you to make better decisions, cut out what you don’t need or even give you a lightbulb idea that will help keep the hitches from you getting hitched. So whether you’re getting married in 2024 or beyond, read on for our top 24 tips from couples in Cornwall and Devon…

In real life

“Try and see things in person as much as possible, rather than deciding based on web pages, social media or brochures.”

Sabrina and Giles

Believe in yourself

“Trust that you’ll get it done and just enjoy the ride. On the day, you’ll be having such an incredible time that details you may have spent hours thinking about before won’t even be on your mind.”

Ali and Amo

Keep the final fortnight free

“Try and get everything done with two weeks to spare – you can then enjoy the build-up rather than doing jobs. And picking music takes longer than you think, so start mulling it over early.”

Melissa and Chris

Swallow your pride

“Some brilliant advice we received was just to swallow your pride and say ‘yes!’ to anyone who offers to help. People really were so happy to lend a hand, which was a lovely feeling, especially those who had already gone through their own wedding and knew how it is. We’re looking forward to paying it forward to the next happy couple in our lives.”

Pip and Chris

Be mindful about your suppliers

“Make sure you like your suppliers and how they treat their employees – we used all local small businesses and they were all fantastic!”

Murphy and Sam

Take inspiration from other weddings

“Really try to view the day through your guests’ eyes and think about what you have enjoyed about weddings when you attend them.”

Gabriella and Will

Take it all in

“On the day, take a few minutes just you and your new spouse to step back and soak it all up. It’s one of my fondest memories of the day and it helped to stop the feeling of the day rushing by.”

Verity and James

Little

and often

“We tried to blitz wedding admin by doing little and often, with lots of spreadsheets helping keep us organised! If you’re doing lots of crafting like we did, we would recommend starting as early as you can as it’s surprising how quickly the weekends run away.”

Jess and Joe

It all takes time

“Setting up takes much longer than you imagine so leave plenty of time and get it all done in the days leading up to the wedding, so you can relax on the evening before. Try not to let it stress you out too much – as long as your family and friends are there, on the day it will be perfect.”

Ellie and Doug

Book a minimoon

“The best thing we did was book a minimoon in Salcombe for two nights at the Harbour Beach Club Hotel. The rest was amazing and just to soak it all in, celebrate with bottles of champagne and walks on the beach – it’s just what you need as a newly married couple.”

Charlotte and Lewis

Plan for a planner

“A planner and coordinator are worth their weight in gold; our day would not have been what it was without ours. She found us the most amazing suppliers, saving us so much time during the planning process and kept the whole day running perfectly with her on-the-day coordination, keeping the stress on our part to an absolute minimum.”

Megan and Stu

Confirm and check

“Always do last-minute checks on dresses, accessories and travel, and talk to your photographer, videographer and make-up artist at least two days before the event if you are planning a destination wedding.”

Manasa and Albin

Plan your petals

“If you’re moving any flowers between venues, plan in advance who will move them and how. We had a plan of where our flowers were going, who was moving and what vehicles would be needed (as they’re often too tall to go in a coupe).”

Katie and Timothy

Forget about the ‘should’

“Don’t be led by other people’s expectations. We said all along we didn’t want a circus so didn’t have a lot of aspects that might be considered traditional, which may have raised eyebrows. But it was perfect as it was and our guests really enjoyed the more relaxed vibe.”

Christie and Keisha

Decide on your priorities

“We absolutely fell in love with plexiglass invitations. We designed and had them made, and to be honest our invitations cost nearly half of our photographer! Was it necessary? Absolutely not. Did it look amazing and is it a piece of art in our friends’ houses? Hell yes!”

Luise and Nina

Save some for later

“Ask the venue to hold back some canapés for you – with all the hugs and thank yous and photos it can be hard to find time to eat them. And the same for the wedding cake – we held back two big slices of cake and enjoyed it the next day on our hotel balcony overlooking the ocean with a cup of tea!”

Daisy and Andy

Organise your photos in advance

“When asking what ‘staged’ photos your family want, check, double-check and triple-check that they definitely don’t want any additional ones to those you have listed! Otherwise, like us, you’ll be ambushed when you’re mid-conversation, a bit tipsy, the sun is going down and it’s raining outside! Our amazing photographer handled these lastminute photo requests like an absolute pro – much better than we handled it!”

Charlotte and David

Bring the vibe

“The energy that you bring as a couple is the energy that the whole day and the guests will have! So try to enjoy, let go of small things, don’t be afraid to be emotional and silly, and dance like crazy!”

Ana and Andy

Create a dedicated email address

“Setting up a separate wedding email account is super helpful, so everything is in one place!”

Rhiannon and Ben

Use spreadsheets

“Make a spreadsheet, especially if you are planning and setting everything up yourself. It’s so easy to become overwhelmed with what’s done, what’s left to do and what payments need to be made.”

Imogen and Ollie

Let go of the ideal

Delegate your downtime

“Ask someone you trust to take on the task of whisking you both away from the crowd for a couple of minutes a few times throughout the day. This makes sure you have some time for the two of you to take it all in, alone, and slows everything down. You want to make moments you remember. You want to fix in place how everything looked, smelt, sounded and felt.”

Sam and Saskia

Delight in the details

“Love is in the details. The favourite parts of our wedding were the personal touches we’d made –these are what so many people took away from the day, rather than the flowers or the food.”

Book a videographer

“If your budget allows we would definitely recommend booking a videographer. The day goes by so quickly, it’s such a special thing to be able to watch and relive the day.”

Emily and Blake

“Your day will not be perfect – and that’s OK! Even after two years of planning, there were still elements that were out of our control. We had to move inside instead of having the outdoor ceremony we really thought we wanted, the registrar didn’t perform the ceremony the way we asked them to and the entry music when we came in for dinner didn’t work out the way we wanted either. But it was still the best day ever, because we got to marry each other surrounded by everyone we love the most – that was what was most important. Everything else is just details.”

Photography shares her tips for looking and feeling your best in your wedding photos

photography Jennifer Jane Photography

In an ideal world, we would effortlessly exude confidence in our wedding photographs. However, many of us grapple with insecurities and personal hang-ups, which means that we often worry about feeling awkward and looking unnatural when facing the lens on our wedding day. We’ve asked wedding photographer Jen Shoubridge of Jennifer Jane Photography (jenniferjanephotography.co.uk) for her top tips for looking and feeling your most fabulous in photographs…

Find comfort

While it’s undeniable that the perfect outfit can make you shine like a diamond, the initial lustre soon fades if you’re not comfortable in your outfit. The boutique experience provides practical comforts for discovering ‘the one’, but it’s crucial to consider environmental elements that can influence the ambience on your big day. Factors like the venue’s style and the season can significantly impact overall comfort. Design features of your outfit, though initially fabulous, can soon prove impractical and cause irritation with prolonged wear, shaping not just your appearance but your comfort. So, whether it’s a wool suit for an August wedding or a dress with a voluminous skirt that doubles as a bug magnet for a countryside affair, pause to consider beyond the mirror’s reflection. This will help you find that perfect blend of style and comfort, ensuring you not only look incredible but feel it too.

Bring in the professionals

I’m not suggesting that make-up is a pre-requisite for looking fabulous but, on your wedding day, you want to look and feel the very best version of yourself – and opting for professional hair and make-up can provide that extra boost of confidence. It can offer assurance that any imperfections you might want to conceal, such as bruises or scars, stay out of the limelight and should you wake up with a less-than-stellar hair day or an unexpected breakout, it can be expertly addressed. It’s like having a magical fairy godmother on standby, ready to transform any beauty hiccup into a distant memory. So, on your special day, you can confidently shine and feel fabulous in every photo.

Stand tall

When faced with the uncertainty of how to stand or pose, or if battling self-consciousness, the common tendency is to slouch – a posture that not only appears uncomfortable but is also unflattering. A simple yet remarkably effective technique to transform your photographic presence is to stand tall with your shoulders back and your tummy pulled in. This not only complements your physique but also radiates an aura of confidence, poise and elegance. However, there’s a fine line between standing tall and looking as if you’ve got a pole up your jacket. After all, our joints were designed for movement. Keep your back straight and your shoulders back but add a gentle bend of the knee or a graceful curve at the elbows, wrists or fingers. This subtle tweak not only infuses a softer, more natural vibe to your body language but also swiftly transforms you from a rigid statue to someone effortlessly at ease and poised.

Know your best side

Understanding your good side can be a game-changer when it comes to capturing the perfect photograph. Most faces aren’t symmetrical and embracing your preferred angle can make the world of difference. Whether it’s the way your hair falls, the curve of your smile or the glint in your eyes, everyone has that side that feels just right. To discover yours, take a photo from both perspectives. If one side leaves you feeling more fabulous than the other, you’ve found your good side! Don’t keep it a secret, though: share the knowledge with your photographer. They’ll appreciate the insight and can weave their magic to highlight your best features. And if you find yourself perfectly content with both sides, well, that’s one less worry on the photographic checklist.

Give hands a task

The devil finds mischief for idle hands and this rings particularly true in the world of photography. Many a photo has fallen victim to hands awkwardly dangling at someone’s sides, looking uncomfortable and awkward, spoiling the shot. The solution? Give hands a purpose! Hold hands with your partner or delicately touch their face, arm or chest. Alternatively, slip a hand into your pocket, grasp your other elbow, place your hand on your hip or interlock your thumb and first finger on both hands. Providing your hands with a task not only looks natural and flattering but effortlessly elevates and transforms your photos.

Relax and smile!

Consider your smile as the ultimate accessory. Beyond its aesthetic charm, a genuine smile radiates positivity and warmth, instantly drawing others in. It not only creates an aura of approachability but conveys a genuine sense of joy. A smile can put a spark in your eyes and light up your face. So, go ahead and embrace your most powerful asset – flash that dazzling smile in your wedding photos and you’ll look amazing.

ABOUT TIME

Love looks different over time. It changes, it grows. From the honeymoon phase to married life, Dr Kalanit Ben-Ari charts the changes to expect – and how to adapt

words Hannah May

They say a lot about time. Time is a healer. Love takes time. But however you view and experience the passage of our days and years, one thing remains clear: the hands of time shape everything – including our relationships.

Reflect upon the journey with your love from your beginnings to today and you’ll realise that changes have occurred. It might be your circumstances such as where you live, or a gradual strengthening of bond having shared lives, fears, events, passions and the routine every day for a protracted period of time together.

Marriage continues to meld your relationship as you move through life and time as a couple. How you feel one year after your wedding is unlikely to reflect your emotions and state of relationship after five, 10 or 20 years of matrimony – so regular reviews both with your self and your partner are a must in order to identify and deal with any issues, and to ensure that you’re still somewhere on the same page of your original love story.

As individual desires and needs can alter over time – from our careers and financial situation to our health – so we must proactively relate and adjust to the effects of these changes on our relationship. The old adage ‘adapt to survive’ may be no more pertinent than when it comes to matrimony.

Specialising in Imago Relationship Therapy that focuses on helping couples to heal from conflict and develop intimacy, communication and empathy, Dr Kalanit BenAri expertly answers our questions on what to expect both during the first few, and through multiple decades of marriage.

Revealing the common problems faced by couples throughout the years, she imparts vital advice on how to safely encounter, negotiate and work through any issues to promote a marriage full of openness, joy and longevity.

What are the hallmarks of a healthy marriage?

“The hallmarks of a healthy marriage include respect, trust, intimacy, friendship and the establishment of healthy communication habits. Additionally, nurturing the relationship and fostering mutual growth are essential components.”

What are the best ways to maintain one? And what should you do if you encounter any problems?

“The best ways to maintain a healthy marriage involve being honest and communicating your feelings in a manner that feels safe to your partner. It’s the small habits of connection, care and love between couples, rather than necessarily the big events, that matter most. This includes developing listening skills and the capacity to work through differences to grow from conflicts. Investing in connection and joy, addressing issues directly without dwelling on them or ignoring them, and moving on after resolving them are key to deepening intimacy and moving to the next level of connection. View yourself and the relationship with the lens of ‘team spirit’ rather than competition or enemies.”

What are the most common problems and causes of arguments or marital breakdown in general and over time?

“In general, and on the surface, couples in long-term relationships may disagree on matters such as money, intimacy, parenting approaches, relations with inlaws and trust. Beneath these conflicts often lie deeper, unresolved childhood emotional needs that manifest in adult relationships, challenging partners to heal past hurts and move towards a more conscious relationship and real love.

Over time, various phases introduce unique challenges. The first year involves adjusting to married life and finding a balance between individuality and partnership. The subsequent years, especially with the arrival of children, can dramatically shift responsibilities, identity and focus. With all the changes in place – from sleep deprivation to shifts in priorities, roles and responsibilities

to emotional overwhelm – it takes a couple, on average, a year to regain balance. Then, many couples experience a shift in power dynamics, such as who continues to climb the career ladder and who devotes more time to home and children. If couples do not continue investing in and prioritising their relationship, an emotional disconnect may develop. Later on, couples reach another milestone when the children leave home, a phase known as the ‘empty nest’. Couples who haven’t prioritised their relationship might find the vacuum and emptiness challenging. However, it also presents an opportunity to rediscover oneself and each other in a more mature love.”

What should couples expect to see change throughout their marriage over time? And what are the best ways to adapt to these different demands or individual changes?

“Couples might notice a drift from initial habits of care, romance and love towards increasing demands and criticisms. The honeymoon phase, typically lasting around nine months, gives way to stages of power struggles. Successfully navigating this phase involves growing into a conscious, meaningful and

connected relationship. Long-term relationships will inevitably face challenges; the key is to develop the skills to repair and reconnect, viewing the relationship as a journey of discovery. Mutual respect (whether in agreement or disagreement), commitment and a proactive approach to nurturing the connection are vital.

Ensure you have regular check-ins about the health of the relationship: what works well in the relationship? What can you both improve upon? What is your priority at this stage of the relationship? What can support you? What is your vision for the relationship? Are your behaviours aligned with your intentions for the relationship? What do you need to let go of?

Aligning actions with intentions are essential strategies for adapting to life’s changes such as ageing, career shifts, illness and financial concerns, just to mention a few possibilities. Love is an action, a verb, requiring ongoing devotion and care to sustain the bond.

Encouraging individuals’ passions and hobbies outside the relationship is also important. This will recharge you and bring new excitement and interest to the space between you.

If faced with a conflict that you cannot find ways

to work through, do not delay; reach out to a relationship therapist to support your journey of repair and healing. And, of course, sign up for my online course ‘Awakening Love’.”

“We had a great moment together celebrating and having fun on the beach”

Beautiful love stories from across Devon
SOPHIE AND HENRY by THOMAS FROST PHOTOGRAPHY

The Call of the Sea

Gara Rock set the sublime scene for Sophie and Henry’s ocean-edge wedding

Meeting whilst studying at the Royal College of Art in London, Sophie and Henry got to know each other in the student bar at the South Kensington building. Henry proposed on Valentine’s Day evening after the couple’s favourite steak and wine dinner. “He had crafted a unique ring from a single preserved rose head, silver wire and a floating heart pendant, and presented it in a precious glass box,” says Sophie.

Perched on the South Devon coast overlooking the sea, the couple fell for the luxurious climes of Gara Rock Hotel for their early spring wedding. A colour palette of coral, peach, ivory, powder and royal blue carried throughout the details. “We wanted it to feel spring-like and fresh, and added personal touches that had a beach feel,” explains Sophie, who reveals their décor incorporated a “slightly eclectic and tactile mix of textures”.

Sophie accessorised her simple flowing gown with a breeze-catching veil, while Henry opted for a classic tux. Their “very personal and intimate” ceremony was shared by the couple’s parents and close friends, taking place in the secret suite at Gara Rock. “We were overlooking the sea and standing under a beautiful flower cloud,” she reflects. A reading of extracts from The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy was followed by the couple exchanging the same personal vows.

Canapés and fizz were served to the newlyweds and their guests, which prompted their favourite part of the day: “The moment straight after the ceremony when you can finally relax, have a drink and enjoy yourselves!” laughs Sophie. The wedding party then headed onto the beach for games and photos.

“The weather was pretty awful and stormy in the morning, and it rained straight after the ceremony too, so our plans to get to the beach for photographs were nearly thwarted,” she reveals, looking back. “However, the sun came out and from then on we had the most beautiful sunny skies all afternoon, so we had a great moment together celebrating and having fun on the beach.”

Served at a table dressed with soft natural textures and peach and blue blooms, the wedding breakfast featured starters of smoked Creedy Carver duck breast, Gara Gin cured salmon and butternut squash velouté followed by 28-day dry-aged beef fillet, whole marinated roast seabass and courgette hasselback. To finish, the delicious dessert options included spiced rum sticky toffee pudding, clotted cream crème brûlée and lemon posset.

As the sun began to dip, golden hour provided the perfect moment for cutting the cake before everyone took to the sands for evening drinks and beach games, taking in the shimmering glow of the sunset over the ocean.

For Sophie and Henry, who planned their wedding in just four months, making quick decisions was key. “Keep on top of tasks and to-do lists; we only had four months to plan it all so we just had to go for it –procrastination just causes more stress and sometimes the most spontaneous decisions are the best ones!” she says. “And remember to enjoy the planning process!”

A Moorland Romance

Stephanie and Ash celebrated their love with their nearest and dearest

at The Horn of Plenty

Stephanie, who comes from the US, met Ash when she began her UK studies back in 2011. “We would have never thought through the years we would remain in touch but, as stars aligned, we did,” she says. “We met up in New York City in 2016 and began a long-distance relationship, then I moved to Plymouth to be with him in 2021.”

A year later, Ash popped the question while taking Stephanie on a hike to the Dartmoor beauty spot he’d taken her on her first visit. “It was the worst winds in England in the past 20 years and everyone was told to stay inside, but just like our love and spirit of adventure, nothing was going to stop us!” she says.

Not only is The Horn of Plenty close to the location of their engagement, the hotel’s country panoramas, customer service and sourcing of sustainable local food won the couple over. “We agreed to have a small wedding and wanted this to be special for us, but also for both families, coming from the US and Cambridgeshire,” she explains. “Having a small wedding of 17 people was one of the best decisions we made as it allowed us to spend time with everyone, keep costs down and add to the intimacy of the day and our memories.”

Choosing deep, romantic colours was an ode to their February wedding date, with accents of gold to add a classic touch. Cascading eucalyptus and big roses featured in Stephanie’s bouquet, as well as eucalyptus, pink and burgundy florals, and hurricane candles on the tables.

A “special and intimate ceremony” began with Stephanie walking down the aisle to Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. “Seeing each other at the end of the aisle and knowing we get to spend this life together was our favourite moment,” says Ash. Stephanie’s brother shared a reading before the couple exchanged personal vows. “This is something I recommend all engaged couples to do; it makes the ceremony much more personal,” she says. “We couldn’t stop smiling!”

The celebrations kicked off with local craft beer, cocktails and canapés, before everyone savoured a bespoke menu including lobster ravioli with crab on creamed leeks, rabbit loin with chorizo risotto, pan-fried seasonal fish and white chocolate crémeux with lemon parfait.

“Speeches from our family and friends were sincere and full of laughs,” says Stephanie. “Then our first dance was a sweet and loving moment. It felt like we were in our own world singing the lyrics together and dancing in each other’s arms. Music is one of our love languages, so this moment was so special for us.” Personal playlists continued throughout the evening, making it feel like “a big house party”, while a live artist illustrated guests.

Stephanie and Ash recommend a methodical approach for those planning. “We created a checklist of ‘month markers’ and then, once checked off the list, we set the planning aside,” she says. “It’s easy to get so consumed by it all but enjoy engaged life and each other!”

Looking back comes with great poignancy, which makes their memories even more treasured. “What we still go back to today is having our closest family and friends with us on our special day,” reflects Stephanie. “We have suffered significant grief, with the loss of my brother and mum within our first year in marriage, and to know we all had this time together is something we will hold with us forever.”

Summer Loving

Charlotte and Max savoured a relaxed wedding amongst the flower-filled meadows of Harefield Barn

There was an instant spark when Charlotte and Max met online 10 years ago. Seven years after meeting for a beach walk first date, Max organised a romantic festive proposal during their first Christmas in their new home. “Max planned a present trail and the last clue led me back to a plant pot by our Christmas tree. Whilst I was leaning to reach the final clue, he got down on one knee in front of the tree. It really was the best Christmas!” she reflects.

Harefield Barn made an instant impression on the couple. “The views are absolutely stunning; people still comment on how beautiful it was on our wedding day,” says Charlotte. “We loved that we could add our own touches to the venue, making it even more personal.” The couple opted for minimal colour and rustic design with small touches of duck egg blue carried in the bridesmaid’s dress and the ties and pocket squares of the groom’s party, with the arrangements of summer flowers providing the rest of the colour.

Charlotte walked down the aisle with her dad to an instrumental version of The Cure’s Friday I’m In Love. “Max and I would request this song every Friday at the pub when we lived in London,” she explains. The heartfelt ceremony took place beneath the clock tower, surrounded by wildflowers and a daisy field, ending with the newlyweds walking back down the aisle to The Hogwarts March. “Max and I are big Harry Potter fans, so we had to incorporate it into our day!”

Guests savoured the sunshine, playing garden games with Pimm’s in hand. “It was lovely to look over and see everyone enjoying themselves in the sun,” says Charlotte. “We chose to have a sweetheart table for our wedding breakfast, which gave us more time as a couple to talk about the day and see everyone chatting away!” The ‘pick your own’ barbecue feast featured Chinese pork, local beef burgers and sausages, barbecued chicken, roast potatoes, salads and sides, followed by homemade lemon meringue pie and chocolate torte.

As day turned to night, the couple had their first dance to Royal Blood’s All We Have Is Now. “It has some meaningful lyrics about enjoying what you have at this moment, which fitted in with the feel of our day,” says Charlotte. French fancies and homemade biscuits fuelled a night of dancing to ‘80s band Ashes to Ashes. “The band played Saturday Night by Whigfield, which led to the dancefloor being filled with us and our friends doing the dance; it’s definitely something I’ll remember!”

“Do not stress about the small things!” she affirms, when asked for her planning advice. “On the day, make sure you take timeout just the two of you, have a walk or sit away from everyone else. Everyone is there to celebrate both of you, and it’s a wonderful feeling.”

“We loved how relaxed our day felt for everyone, which is what we wanted it to be from the beginning!” she reflects. “Our favourite moment was dancing and singing along with the band surrounded by our friends and family under the fairy light canopy! It was the perfect end to an incredible day.”

Endless Love

Grace and Jevon embraced classic Hollywood glamour at their dazzling New Year’s Eve wedding

Grace and Jevon danced all night long after their eyes met across a dance floor on Christmas Eve 2015. Seven years later, the couple were visiting St Michael’s Mount during Storm Eunice when Jevon proposed amidst the wild weather. “We now call it the perfect storm!” laughs Grace.

With their love story officially beginning on New Year’s Eve 2015, New Year’s Eve was the perfect wedding date for the couple, who chose the Hunters Moon, Grace’s family’s Georgian country house hotel in Sidmouth, as the setting for their “classic Hollywood glamour” celebrations.

The black tie affair was styled with swans and gold accents. “I had a clear vision of ornate gold, regal tablescapes, swan planters, white amaryllis in the church, anemones and thistles in our whimsical bouquets, and large stone vases and beautiful church candles throughout,” explains Grace.

Style took a front seat, with the nearlyweds knowing just how they wanted to look for their dazzling day. “I wanted to combine the elegance and gracefulness of the beautiful Grace Kelly and the timeless style of Marilyn Monroe,” explains Grace, who wore a stunning minimalist gown with a detachable overskirt and custom silk and ostrich feather gloves. “My wonderful bridesmaids’ inspiration was Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s with her iconic black dress, gloves and pearls,” she continues. “Jevon always knew what he wanted to wear too: a classic ivory velvet double-breasted jacket with gold accessories.”

As the year drew to a close, the couple treated their guests to “an old-fashioned style wedding with a feel of New Year’s Eve excitement, enchantment, romance and glamour”. The ceremony at Sidmouth Parish Church was filled with joyful hymns, gospel music and a surprise for Jevon. “I arranged for some of my former dance students to surprise my husband and all our guests with a ballet dance performance on pointe in the aisles of the church,” reveals Grace. “It was incredibly sentimental and emotional, and I loved being able to surprise Jevon.”

At the Hunters Moon, everyone enjoyed a “flawless” winter-inspired vegetarian menu including a delectable celeriac and truffle foam soup and a mouthwatering sticky toffee pudding, the couple’s favourite dessert. The sweet treats continued with the lemon wedding cake with buttercream piping and swan cake toppers to represent the newlyweds and their cats.

Looking back, entering the dining room was a real standout moment, thanks to their party-loving friends. “Our raucous wedding guests were all dancing and cheering to Jennifer Lopez’s Let’s Get Loud – with matching chic sunglasses and napkins swinging in the air,” laughs Grace.

The first dance – Endless Love by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross, “an oldie but a goldie!” – kicked off the evening in style. “Our wedding band, Joey the Lips, brought in the new year in the most spectacular way,” she reflects. “They were our dream come true!”

And what about her advice for busily planning couples? “Try to enjoy the crazy ride and do a little each day rather than leave it all to the last minute, to avoid any extra stresses,” she says. “Your wedding is ultimately about your love for each other and nothing else truly matters at the end of the day. Embrace and enjoy every moment.”

Better Together

Daisy and Oli celebrated their spring wedding in the sunshine at Brickhouse Vineyard

High school sweethearts Daisy and Oli became a couple at 17, and it was in 2021 while they were on a dream holiday in Barbados that an evening beach walk led to a romantic proposal.

Choosing a colour scheme of “sage green accents with neutrals”, the rustic-luxe venue of Brickhouse Vineyard created the most beautiful blank canvas for their spring celebration. The light and airy barn was dressed with bunting, foliage and linen table runners, and dotted with dainty bundles of daisies and gypsophila. The cake, meanwhile, was a sweet and simple ode to spring; its crisp white tiers decorated with daisies.

The wedding day dawned bright and sunny. Daisy wore a dreamily romantic gown with delicate lace detailing and a soft tulle train; elegant T-bar shoes dotted with diamantés, a sleek updo, sheer veil and a bouquet of white roses completed her timelessly beautiful look. Oli, meanwhile, opted for a dapper black suit.

Arriving in a sunshine yellow VW campervan, Daisy made her entrance along the blossom tree-lined path to the 18th century Round House with her dad. The red brick walls, open vaulted roof and arrangements of white blooms made for a charm-filled backdrop for the couple to exchange their own handwritten vows in front of family and friends.

After the ceremony and confetti shower, guests mingled over canapés, Pimm’s and Aperol Spritzes in the sunshine, while live musician Richard James provided a soulful acoustic soundtrack. Daisy and Oli headed off for photographs, enjoying some precious, just-married moments strolling through the idyllic grounds and wildflower meadows.

Returning to join their guests for the wedding breakfast, the feast began with bruschetta followed by roast beef with all the trimmings and an indulgent sticky toffee pudding providing the sweet endnote. The speeches were interspersed throughout the meal, bringing the couple’s story to life with a mix of heartwarming, funny and sweet moments.

As the sun began to set over the vineyard, Richard James kicked off the evening’s entertainment, starting with Daisy and Oli’s first dance to Better Together by Luke Combs. As everyone joined them on the dance floor, the new Mr and Mrs soaked up the joy of being surrounded by their loved ones celebrating their love together. “The whole day was amazing,” says Daisy, looking back. “We loved every moment.”

And when it comes to words of wisdom for those who are busily planning their own weddings, Daisy strongly recommends that couples stay true to themselves. “My advice is to pick the traditions that work for you,” she suggests. “Our day felt so authentic to us – don’t feel like you have to do something a certain way. The day will be special if it feels like you.”

You and Me

A crisp winter’s day at Upton Barn set the scene for Lottie and Charlie’s enchanting wedding

Although they met as teenagers, it wasn’t until Lottie and Charlie matched on Tinder and then bonded during a lockdown walk along a canal that they became a couple. “After the walk I came home to my best friend who I was living with at the time and said: ‘I think I’ve just met my husband’ – and I moved into his house six months later!” she recalls.

On the second anniversary of their canal-side date, the couple were on the same walk when Charlie proposed. “Our parents were waiting for us behind the bridge a little further on with a bottle of champagne. It was perfect!” says Lottie.

Working in the wedding industry, Lottie knew – even before she met Charlie – that Upton Barn would be her wedding venue. They opted for a theme of “laidback and wintery with lots of green” for their December wedding, partly as a nod to Charlie’s career in forestry. Continuing the theme, the couple had mini wooden tree slices as place names for each guest and their tables, which were lined with candles and scented foliage, were named after trees.

Getting ready on the morning of the wedding with her eight bridesmaids, who she’s known since the age of 11, made the most wonderful start to the day for Lottie. “The Paddock at Upton Barn was amazing – a total must-book if you’re getting married there,” she says. “Plenty of prosecco, a Spotify playlist and getting to witness the most amazing sunrise was one of those ‘pinch me’ moments. Being with my childhood best friends for such a special day will make me forever smile.”

Flanked by her bridesmaids in green dresses and gypsophila flower crowns, Lottie made her entrance to the ceremony in a romantic lace gown, topped with a golden vine hairpiece made by her mum. “We were all nervous and giggling and it was just wonderful,” she reminisces.

The ceremony included readings by Lottie’s best friend Grace and brother-in-law Greg followed by heartfelt vows and a rather chilly confetti celebration. The guests then enjoyed the grounds with fizz in hand before speeches that were “so epic!” says Lottie. “They were so emotional, so funny and so ‘us’. My dad has had a double-lung transplant and before he did, we didn’t think he’d ever make it to be able to do a father of the bride speech, so he had everyone in tears, reflecting on that and appreciating it. The whole wedding really was ‘forget the small stuff and just have a bloody good time’, based around moments like this.”

A feast of sharing platters followed, including antipasti, roast and a “mega sharing dessert board of cookies, brownies, waffles and fruit”, she says.

The focal point of the ceremony, a linen banner with ‘You and Me, Always and Forever’ carried the lyrics of their first dance song by The Wannabes. “It’s ‘our song’ – and it starts off wonderfully slow so I knew it was a corker for when it all kicks off and our friends and family could join us on the dance floor,” says Lottie. After the cutting of the cake, the dancing continued long into the evening, punctuated only by a sparkler shot. “I had my heart set on this!” she reflects.

“Being with my childhood best friends for such a special day will forever make me smile”
Lottie and Charlie savoured a romantic stroll through the grounds of Upton Barn in the crisp winter sunshine.

Love in September

Mel and Chris wove personal touches throughout their stunning late summer celebration

A Tinder success story, Mel and Chris matched on the dating app in 2014 and enjoyed their first date at a cocktail bar in Wimbledon. Almost seven years later, Chris was insistent they both went for a walk along the South Downs coastal path, despite heavy winds and rain. “Luckily a break in the bad weather allowed enough time for us to walk along the top, take in the views and Chris caught me completely off guard, getting down on one knee in the muddy path and saying he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me,” recalls Mel. “It was a wonderful day!”

Although the couple live in Surrey, Devon holds a special place in both their hearts. “We’ve both spent lots of time holidaying in the South Hams in Devon and really love it there,” she says. When they set eyes on the secluded and beautiful setting of Shilstone House, they set about planning their UK destination wedding.

The couple blended boho and rustic elements with a classic mood and personal touches to create a beautiful wedding scene. A combination of dried flowers and pink and green wildflowers complemented the lush country setting; the couple sat on bohemian peacock chairs and guests scattered homemade pink confetti from friends’ and family’s rose bushes. “We wanted it to be relaxed, intimate and personal but also timeless and really special so we put a lot of thought into the details,” explains Mel.

A cycling-themed reading at the ceremony and a bicycle bedecked with blooms nodded to Chris’s love of cycling. “Another personal touch was a reading from Everything I Know About Love, a modern take on a wedding poem that we felt captures our experience of love,” she says.

With Chris donning a grey velvet tuxedo jacket and black trousers and Mel dazzling in a gown by Made With Love, the couple took their vows in the walled garden in the September sunshine. “Arriving at the top of the steps and meeting each other’s eyes for the first time, surrounded by our family and soaking in the sunshine, was a very emotional moment,” says Mel, reflecting on the couple’s standout memory. “We’d finally made it to the best day of our lives. We both felt elated with joy and love at the journey we were about to embark on.” They couldn’t stop smiling as they took their own handwritten vows and walked back down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

Saxophonist Daniel Costin had guests dancing in the sunshine during the drinks reception and performed one of the couple’s favourite songs – Jubel – for their jubilant entrance into the marquee. Everyone tucked into tomato bruschetta, chicken with pancetta breadcrumb and chocolate tart before the “brilliantly written, witty and personal speeches”.

After a loved-up stroll in the grounds during the golden hour, Mel and Chris’s first dance to Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac, performed by live band I Love Amp, kicked off a memorable evening party, with a ‘90s dance megamix set – complete with foam glow sticks – sending the dance floor wild.

Reflecting on their dreamlike day, Mel has some pragmatic advice for other couples. “Decide on your budget first – this will help determine your decision making,” she recommends. “Do your research and invest in suppliers who have a brilliant reputation and run like clockwork; they will make the whole experience personal and help you to seamlessly execute your vision!” She adds: “On the day, what will be will be, soak it all up and enjoy every minute”.

Plan a so-you celebration with these top tips from the wedding gurus. This issue, we look at benevolent ideas that give something back

NOTES ON A WEDDING

Flower power. After the celebrations are over, your wedding flowers can brighten the day of others who could use a little cheer. Consider donating your flowers to hospitals, nursing homes or hospices. You’ll not only be spreading joy but also reducing waste by giving your flowers a second life. Hazel

Food glorious food. Any leftover food could be donated to a food bank or soup kitchen. You’d be surprised at the amount of leftovers you’ll have. Sophie

Be fair. From wedding attire to decoration, choose items that are ethically sourced and that support Fairtrade practices. You will be supporting the fair treatment of artisans and workers all over the world. Jess

Hair today, gone tomorrow. How about a hair change? Chop your hair off and donate it to a charity that makes wigs for children with cancer!

Sophie

Registry with meaning. Instead of a traditional wedding list, set up a charitable list where guests purchase items for a charity that is meaningful to you as a couple. Whether it’s supporting a local animal shelter with food and

bedding, donating towards WaterAid or supporting local conservation, your guests can contribute to causes that can make a difference. Hazel

Assess the dress. This is a big decision, but donating your dress to a charity that can turn it into a christening dress, a charity shop or someone who needs it the most, is a lovely way to help someone else out. Sophie

Happy honeymoon. Choose to give back as part of your honeymoon and have an adventure such as trekking for a charity or volunteering at an animal conservation project abroad. Asking guests for donations towards your charitable honeymoon can also help to raise awareness and money for your chosen charity. Hazel

Choose your venue wisely. Does your venue invest into its community or maybe it donates to a local charity? By hosting your celebrations at a venue with a charitable mission, you are directly supporting their efforts. Jess

The joy of giving back. Choose charitable wedding favours rather than more traditional options. Many charities offer options such as seeds, pin badges and chocolates. Choose a charity that is

close to your heart along with a small explanation as to why you chose it. Hazel

Choose wisely. Opt for suppliers who donate to charity as part of their package. I personally donate 1% of every booking to The Bowel Babe fund, and many other suppliers will do something similar. Sophie

Put eco-friendly first. Minimise your waste and carbon footprint by opting for sustainable choices throughout your wedding planning. From upcycling and buying secondhand to using recycled materials, every eco-conscious choice will make a difference. Jess

Excellent entertainment. One of my favourite weddings included a raffle. Consider organising your own raffle as a charity event or turn it into a silent auction. Sophie
