Prepare for your day in the spa-like setting of The Paddock before taking to the lavender-lined aisle of the walled garden for romantic al fresco vows or saying ‘I do’ amidst the rustic elegance of the Cider Barn. Perhaps take a wander around the lake before toasting your love in the Press Bar, hosting an unforgettable feast in the Stable Barn and partying the night away in the Cider Barn.
As if that wasn’t enticing enough, the venue has unveiled some brand-new accommodation options, allowing the newlyweds – and their nearest and dearest – to prolong the celebrations. Along with The Stalls – Scandi-style accommodation pods in a tranquil wooded glade that sleep up to eight – the venue has added two additional pods to the collection. SMALL AND SCENIC
If the idyllic South Devon Hills sounds like your perfect wedding day backdrop, then Battleford Farm is the picturesque place to be. Comprising a rustic wedding barn set amidst acres of rolling meadows near Totnes, the venue allows couples carte blanche to design the day of their dreams. What’s more, the venue’s green credentials include sourcing power from solar panels and water from its own borehole, perfect for couples seeking a close-to-nature wedding with minimal impact on the planet.
Available from May to September, the venue is already popular with couples planning a summer celebration complete with exclusive use of the venue’s three-acre field and wedding barn, a fully staffed bar and guest camping. For couples dreaming of a just-for-two celebration or an event with up to six guests present, the venue now offers an elopement wedding package, which is available on Saturdays or Tuesdays from May to September.

A MOORLAND LOVE STORY
What could be more wildly romantic than taking your vows in a riverside location in the heart of Dartmoor? Set amidst a canvas of rugged moorland, ancient granite tors and wooded valleys, with the River Dart weaving its path through the grounds, the family-run Badger’s Holt is an escapist’s dream. A fully licensed indoor and outdoor venue, couples can exchange vows immersed in natural beauty and host a rustic reception in this hidden gem – a former fishing lodge that has been transformed into a rural bolthole boasting myriad spaces and palpable ambience.
A relaxed and romantic location for a wedding through all the seasons, the venue plays host to elopements, intimate events and parties for up to 100 guests and every package is customised to suit each couple’s vision. Feast on a hog roast or three-course banquet - and maybe embrace a festival feel with a chilled evening vibe of food trucks and live music. Just imagine the romance of dramatic photographs on stacked granite boulders beneath endless skies, or under towering oak trees as the sun scatters through the leaves. And, as night falls, dance the night away beneath twinkling fairy lights or gather around the firepit with your loved ones. Complete with a wedding suite and self-catering apartments (sleeping up to 24 guests), you might round off the festivities by curling up in front of the wood-burning stove, with the rushing waters of the River Dart at the window. A late licensed bar means the celebrations need not end early.
Visit the venue on Sunday 16th February, when an open day will showcase Badger’s Holt in all its glory, allowing couples to see first-hand just how special a wedding here could be. badgersholtweddings.co.uk

Warm earthy tones and modern boho-chic styling create a dream scene for an autumnal elopement at Battleford Farm
photography Jake Janes Photography styling Fika Event Hire
Dreaming of escaping to an away-from-it-all corner of Devon for a small and secluded wedding celebration? Set amidst the rolling hills of South Devon in Ipplepen near Totnes, Battleford Farm offers an off-the-beaten-track location, where ancient oak trees and a babbling brook meet a patchwork of lush fields. Having recently launched an elopement package (see more on p.7), this styled shoot illustrates how wildly romantic an elopement here can be.
The myriad backdrops of the venue move from oak trees and sprawling farmland to the three-acre field, tree swing and picturesque hills. Natural, earthy hues of burnt orange, russet red and caramel brown form the base palette, which is spliced with shots of yellow, crimson, muted whites and green foliage. The result is a multi-tonal, textured and sense-piquing scene. Place settings comprising raffia placemats, gold flatware and ribbon nametags add to the boho-chic scene, while tabletops bedecked with orange runners, forest green candlesticks and goblets, and mixed posies of fresh and dried florals in brown bottles evoke the farm’s surrounds.
The wardrobe enhances the boho-chic theme, with the groom’s contemporary, camel-coloured two-piece finished with a collarless shirt, leather loafers and cream and dried flower boutonniere: the epitome of laidback tailoring.
Meanwhile, the bride’s floral embroidered gown presents the perfect blend of modern seduction and classic romance, her trailing locks with a crown braid and pearl and leaf hair vine adding an ethereal edge. Floral chandelier earrings and an oversized bouquet showcasing the shoot’s spectrum of shades stitch the details together in this canvas of natural beauty.

The epitome of country grandeur with a heady twist of glamour, St Audries Park – situated at the foot of the Quantock Hills – is the perfectly picturesque backdrop for this beautifully whimsical styled shoot. A palette of pastel pink, lilac, peach and blue blend with soft textures to create an uber-romantic look and atmosphere in the country manor house with its light-filled spaces and fabulous period features.
The Victorian Orangery brings the drama with its golden aisle and towering floor-to-ceiling windows, while a statement floral arch and smattering of floor arrangements draw the gaze along and towards the end of the aisle, the surrounding parkland providing a lush green canvas from every view beyond. In the Banqueting Hall overlooking the rose garden and deer park, trestle tables adorned with baby pink chiffon runners, colourful glassware and candles, and a rainbow of blooms create an air of romantic sophistication. This is mirrored by the cake: a four-tiered extravaganza featuring seasonal sugar clematis flowers alongside intricate baby blue, iridescent pearl, gold leaf and floral detailing.
The dress – a pale blue confection of voluminous ruffled tulle – oozes wow-worthy seduction and is contemporised with a deep plunging neckline, delicate spaghetti back straps and 3D silk blossom petals. Not to be sartorially outdone by his bride, the groom is the picture of princely chic in timelessly tailored black tie. A fairytale vision brought to life.
Rustic luxe meets boho glam with warm hues, metallic accents and natural detailing in a scenic corner of North Devon
photography Grace Elizabeth | styling Best Day Ever!
Blending the indoors and outdoors to evoke a palpable sense of the season, this styled shoot at HARTA Retreat in North Devon sees the venue’s scenic surroundings merge with gorgeous décor. Taking an autumnal palette fused with deep berry tones and bright colour pops, the look is one of foraged beauty with a fun and glamorous twist.
Floristry mixing fresh and dried flowers greets an illuminated ‘Love’ sign, festooned fairy lights and a smattering of glitterballs. Tables decorated with midnight blue runners contrast with the colourful glassware, floral arrangements, napkins and candlesticks all muted by leather Moroccan pouffes, handmade wooden stools and tree stump side tables atop braided jute rugs.
Ornate silver candle-holders, vintage serving trays and gold flatware complete the luxe-edged look, with the cake adorned with dried petals and pearls perfectly blending the two contrasting aesthetics. Sheepskin rugs, aerial installations, potted palms and hammocks draped between the tipi’s poles continue the textured layering, lending the scene a super-cosy, eclectic feel.

If your bridal vision is one of luxe, high fashion or en vogue elements, you’re in luck. Ranging from architectural gowns and customised outfits to party dress showstoppers and eye-catching ornamentation, today’s contemporary collections are truly head-turning.
With keynotes of volume, structure and colour, picture the likes of bubble skirts, exposed corsetry, puff sleeves, hand-finished embellishments and elaborate overskirts. Shades of blue, pink and red are popular choices, as are textured dresses blending an assortment of fabrics and finishes. Go all-out with a head-to-toe coloured ballgown with a frothy skirt or tone it down with an elegant peplum gown.
And don’t forget the details. XXL and mini bows, ribbons, pearls and luminous shades of platinum and champagne all up the swoon factor. Or for a more fun, spotlight-stealing effect, pick a party-ready outfit incorporating shimmery flourishes including sequins, mirrored details, crystals or metallic paillettes.
Boho whimsy Laidback fashions, eco-friendly elements and ethereal styling all fall under the boho whimsy mien. Blend genres, focus on a particular theme or elevate a simple style with layering or an adornment or two for an interest-laden look.
This might mean nature motifs like floral appliqués, botanical prints and floral lace; a shot of colour such as with pastel gowns and colourful embroidery; or sustainably sourced bridal wear including recycled/ organic/Fairtrade/natural/biodegradable fabrics, cottagecore, hired, vintage and preloved pieces. This can also be extended into locally made, low- and zero-waste and dresses produced by companies with eco-friendly and charitable initiatives.
Specifically, boho whimsy lends itself to fluid and sweeping chiffon and organza, ruffles, highlow hemlines, boudoir-inspired styles, maxi dresses, tiered tulle skirts, billowing shoulder ties and streamers, and 3D and textured florals including hand-drawn blooms, daisies and rosettes. Fitted lace gowns, floaty A-lines, seductive fit-and-flares and relaxed styles (bridal rompers and playsuits, mini dresses) all fit the free-spirited brief.

ONE OF A KIND
Designing and crafting her unique sculptural jewellery on the edge of Dartmoor, the untamed beauty of the surrounding landscape is an endless source of inspiration for designer-maker Corrinne Eira Evans – and its impact is plain to see in her new ‘One of a Kind’ jewellery collection. A modern take on the traditional signet ring, the new pieces combine engagement, wedding and ceremonial into one irresistible design.
Androgynous in aesthetic, the intricate rings blend heritage crafts skills with contemporary design, while carefully selected materials echo the essence of the moorland. Housing one-off ethically sourced gemstones laced in high carat SMO golds, the pieces are designed with touch and tactility in mind, moving with and on the body, for the most comfortable fit. “I’m inspired by Dartmoor, by the ever-changing, mystical landscape that surrounds me. My work holds echoes of the world see; shadows, dappled light, wild grasses and shifting skies,” says Corrinne, who has caught the eye of influential fine jewellery experts with both her technical ability and the way her jewellery captures the spirit of the moorland and transforms it into fluid precious metal.
The soulful connection between designer and inspiration is palpable in her studio at Moon & Moor Gallery in Okehampton, where Corrinne crafts her fine jewellery and showcases her collections alongside a variety of beautiful ethical makers’ work. Passionate about bringing clients’ visions to life in her unique sculptural style, Corrinne welcomes commissions, whether it’s designing a piece from scratch or using her clients’ gemstones and heirloom gold to create something stunning and packed with meaning.

Gemstone engagement and wedding rings are stealing the spotlight with their beauty, versatility and symbolism
words Hannah May
Wedding world is crushing on rocks right now, allowing couples to individually pick or design their bands for a look and meaning that’s totally unique to them.
“Including gemstones in your ring opens a world of creativity,” says Jamila Hirtenstein from Justin Duance (justind.co.uk). “Different stones and styles of setting can give your ring personality and make it truly yours.”
Designer-maker Corrinne Eira Evans (corrinneeiraevans.com) agrees. “‘Gemstones are truly personal – from colour to cut, size and meaning,” she adds of the scope of customisation available with the simple addition of a stone.
We’ve taken the top trends and expert tips and broken them down into the basic things to think about when buying a gemstone ring...
Wearability
One of the most important factors is the durability of your bands. “Our advice is to think about your lifestyle and how you want to wear your ring,” says Jamila. “Our rings are designed to be worn all the time, for the rest of your life. By choosing hard stones, you will be sure they will stand the test of time. Many gemstones can become dull or even chipped with time because they are soft or brittle.”
“Each stone will have varying properties,” explains Corrinne. “Diamonds are always a strong favourite due to their hardness and clear look adhering to many styles throughout your life.” Discuss the options with your preferred jewellers to gain a greater idea of how your choice will be impacted by your lifestyle.
For daily wear, “Erin recommends diamonds, rubies and sapphires,” says Jasmine Bowden at Erin Cox (erincox. co.uk). “We advise caution for those considering pearl, emerald or opal engagement rings as their natural characteristics make them more prone to damage from daily wear,” she adds. “These delicate gemstones are better suited for cocktail or special occasion rings, to be admired and preserved.”
Colour
A classic clear diamond will never go out of fashion and remains the perennial girl’s best friend. “Diamonds are not only a symbol of eternal love but also the hardest natural substance on earth,” says Jasmine. “Their exceptional hardness makes them highly resistant to scratches and damage, helping your diamond jewellery remain as brilliant as the day it was crafted.” However, should you want to flash some colour, there’s an array of options available. “Instead of traditional white diamonds or cornflower blue sapphires, why not dare to be bold and capture a slice of the rainbow with a coloured diamond or sapphire?” she suggests.
You might have a favourite shade in mind or be swayed toward the current colour trends. Bright and dazzling stones in jewel tones are all the rage, specifically sapphires, which “come in almost every colour and shape, from raw crystal forms to perfect cuts”, notes Jamila. “They have been a real hit in recent years,
with ethical gemstone mines producing bold and pastel
(yellows, blues, greens, pinks, purples), bicoloured and parti sapphires heading the trends,” reports Corrinne. “These are fabulous alternatives as the stone
for classic timeless design choice.”
Ask about the range of stones your jeweller works with or can source for you, and don’t forget to enquire about unique alternatives. “We think that tourmalines and spinels are underrated gemstones that deserve a spotlight!” reveals Jasmine. “They come in a beautiful array of colours and they can make spectacular individual designs.”
Other trends to consider include sustainably sourced diamonds – especially lab-grown, along with champagne and recycled diamonds.
Cut, size and setting
From classic round, pear, heart and princess shaped stones to modern designs featuring multiple shapes and colours, the way your stones are sized, cut and set can ensure a beautifully bespoke set of rings.
“You can now get some truly amazing unusual cuts, and another favourite I like to use is portrait cut ethically sourced from Misfit Diamonds – a thin clear slice with a bevelled edge historically used on jewellery with painted portrait miniatures housed underneath,” says Corrinne.
Old world cuts are enjoying a moment, with elongated cushion, emerald, marquise, Asscher and radiant cuts popular choices. Size-wise, large stones and a smattering of smaller stones – especially pavé – are forerunners, while toi et moi (two-stone) bands, bezel and east to west (horizontal) are a few of today’s standout stone settings.
Source
The ethics of stone sourcing continues to factor into couple’s ring-buying and commissioning processes, with Fairtrade stones and lab-grown diamonds growing in popularity. Vintage-inspired and antique rings (particularly art deco) remain de rigueur for couples wanting a sense of story and to make more eco-friendly choices. This trend also includes the reworking of heirloom and sentimental jewellery into new and distinct pieces, as well as the use of recycled jewellery and gems.
“All the stones we use are either recycled or fully traced from their mine of origin,” asserts Jamila. “We have a beautiful collection of vintage diamonds, which were hand cut more than 100 years ago, so they have a unique organic character as well as being less expensive than their modern equivalents.”
STYLISH SURROUNDS
Dress with a sense of place to ensure your venue and outfit are on the same stylistic page words Hannah May
BEACH & WATERSIDE
Any waterside wedding will be elevated by groomswear selected to amplify the setting’s natural ambience and beauty. From a sand-coloured two-piece with open buttoned shirt to a teal blue double-breasted cord suit, the aesthetic is one of relaxed yet considered elegance.
You might fancy a fashionable all-white suit in keeping with a coastal setting, a beige twopiece for a sand-between-the-toes ceremony or a nautical-inspired navy blue outfit for a lake or riverside event. Keep to one or two similar hues for a coordinated and formal look or go casual and characterful with colourful accessories, like a unique tie-pin, bright boutonniere or custom-made cufflinks.
Opt for a jacket in light pink, lemon yellow or any pastel shade to soften and contrast your look or add layers of tone and texture via the minutiae; think a vibrant or patterned tie/pocket square, printed shirt or jacket lining. Alternatively, focus on the fabrics with a velvet waistcoat or linen trousers. Add an ocean-hued Dupioni silk tie, plaid brogues, designer tennis shoes or suede loafers for laidback luxe.
Beach weddings also lend themselves to sustainable wear (though remember you can incorporate more green choices anywhere!) made using eco fabrics such as organic cotton, linen, hemp, EcoVero viscose, soy silk, bamboo and Tencel (and not to forget other eco-friendly options including suit hire, ethical brand selection and vintage/ pre-loved pieces).
HOTELS & PRIVATE VENUES
Nothing says haute suave like flaunting the latest fashions in the hotel lobby. If your venue falls along the lines of exclusive member’s club, private estate, luxury villa, clifftop bolthole, hip restaurant-bar or intimate vineyard, then the latest groom lines were made for you.
Grey tailored suits smack of modish allure and timeless chic, whether slim fit or loose in the loungewear vein. You can’t go wrong with cream, especially if paired with a stripy or coloured shirt. Add a pleated blue shirt, double layer bow-tie and matching patterned tie and pocket square for a master class in modern groom’s style.
And don’t forget the details. Think layered bracelets, necklaces and rings alongside personalised pieces such as monogrammed pocket squares, jacket linings, engraved watches, custom-designed embroideries and bespoke tailoring. Or pick the simplest way to splice some instant à la mode appeal: the floral lapel.
Black tie is still an uber-stylish staple,

YOUR ULTIMATE WEDDING PLANNING GUIDE
Congratulations, you’re engaged! Now what? If you’re flummoxed before you’ve even begun, here’s how to get from engaged to “I do” with as little stress as possible
Getting engaged – it’s perhaps one of the most exciting things to happen in adult life, and the one that kickstarts your wedding planning journey. But before you begin to panic at the seemingly endless tasks ahead of you, take a deep breath and follow our guide to planning your big day…
Pick your priorities
What do you and your other half want out of your big day? What’s important and what are you happy to do without? If you just want something simple, you could opt for a register office ceremony followed by a meal at your favourite restaurant. But if you want everyone you know present, live music throughout and drone videography to capture it all, you’ll need to dig a little deeper.
Money money money
Before you lose yourself down a Pinterest rabbit hole, determine a budget. A boring but very necessary first step as every consequential decision will be influenced by it. The average cost of a wedding in the UK is now £20,700 (according to Hitched’s National Wedding Survey) but it’s perfectly possible to spend significantly less.
“Gauge whether you will be offered finance from loved ones, whether that’s parents, guardians or others. And work out how much you can afford. You should always spend within your means and decide for yourself how much you feel is a sensible budget to suit your ideas,” advises wedding planner Laura Dalton of Kept Weddings (keptweddings.co.uk).
Guess the guests
Once you’ve got an idea of the budget and where your priorities lie, you can create a guest list. “Crafting your guest list is a delicate balance,” says wedding planner Hazel Parsons of Out of The Ordinary Weddings (outoftheordinaryweddings.com). “Prioritise close family and friends who truly matter to you. Consider your budget and venue size, and don’t be afraid to be selective (and, if needed, to say no). Remember, your special day should reflect your vision, you as a couple and create lasting memories for those you cherish most.” While you can expect a few declines, plan for the number of guests you’re actually inviting as it will impact your venue choice.
Game plan
This might sound a little nerdy, but before you go any further think about how you’re going to manage Project Wedding. The exact method doesn’t matter as much as your ability to stick with it. You could use a traditional wedding planner, an app, a Google Doc or an Excel spreadsheet.
Think about who will plan what, too. “Divide up the jobs, be open to others’ input, but
ultimately have what you want. Don’t be scared to say no. Delegate to those who are willing and have a skill in that area,” advises Hazel.
Laura is a fan of a folder system. “Create supplier folders within a main folder and save all your booking agreements, contracts and invoices here. There can be a lot of communication with your suppliers and it’s easy to lose or misplace information that’s important,” she says.
“If you really aren’t confident in your planning abilities, there is always the option to book a wedding planner. We can help save time, keep you organised, look after your pocket and share professional tips and advice through our years of planning weddings,” advises Laura.
Location location location
Perhaps you’ve already got your heart set on a specific venue or maybe you’re keen to explore your options. Either way, view and book your venue early. Not only does it usually represent a large portion of your budget, but many venues are booked up far in advance. If you want certain key people there, check in with them before booking to make sure they’re free.
Be sure to consider how much the venue is going to cost when everything is added up. For example, if you’re having a DIY wedding there may be extra costs such as “toilets, waste, recycling, power, water, tables, chairs, linens, tableware, staffing and tents”, says Hazel.
It’s a date
Once you’ve found your venue, it’s time to book. “Decide when you would like to get married. This might be dictated by how much you can save by that date, the aesthetic you are going for – summer or winter – and your budget, as last minute availability can help you pick up deals, but also different times of the year can affect the price,” says Laura.
Organise insurance
Get wedding insurance to protect you from unforeseen issues such as venue problems, supplier cancellations or a key member of the wedding party getting ill. If you haven’t already, now might be a good time to get your ring insured too.
Have a vision
Gather up your favourite magazines, fill your Instagram feed with dreamy accounts, set up a Pinterest board or real-life mood board and get ready to immerse yourself in a world of wedding aesthetics. As you’re researching, note any favourite recurring details, themes, styles and colours. It’s worth waiting until after you’ve secured your venue to do this though, as in many cases that’ll influence the overall look and feel of the day.
Ask your wedding party
It’s time to round up your best pals and ask them to be involved. Don’t feel limited to traditional roles if they’re getting in your way. You could have a male maid of honour or two best men. Once you’ve asked and they’ve accepted, have a chat about how you’d like them to be involved in the lead-up so everyone’s on the same page.
Save the date
The venue is booked, your key people have said yes – now it’s time to design, print and send your save the dates. Plan to do this around a year to six months before your wedding.
Choose accommodation
If your venue comes with accommodation, skip ahead, but if not, you’ll need to work out where you’re staying the night before and of your wedding. If your venue has multiple accommodation options, you could arrange a block of rooms for your nearest and dearest.
Book your suppliers
Now’s the time to start thinking about who’s going to help bring your wedding to life. Wedding photographers and videographers often get booked up fast, so look at some options and find the right fit for you.
If your venue doesn’t offer catering, you’ll need to source your own. Go back to your priority list and think about what you’d like. From a hog roast or local pasties to artisan grazing platters or a threecourse sit down meal, there are caterers to suit every taste. Arrange a tasting and time to finalise the menu too.
Other suppliers to think about, contact and book include a florist, cake designer, hair stylist, makeup artist, stationery designer and transport if you need it. And whether you’re after a wedding DJ to play disco classics late into the night, a rocking live band or a string quartet for the ceremony, it’s time to choose your musicians – and any extra entertainment you fancy – and get them booked in pronto too.
Say yes to the dress
It’s time to go wedding dress shopping! Remember to allow plenty of time for browsing, ordering and alterations. “I would advise brides to start shopping 14-16 months before the wedding and be prepared to say ‘yes to the dress’ at least 12 months before the big day,” advises Tiffany Portman of St Ives Bridal Boutique (stivesbridalboutique.co.uk).
Even if you have an idea in mind, try on a few different styles – you might surprise yourself. Take one or two trusted people with you for honest feedback. The groom will also need to start thinking about suits too, and you’ll need to arrange the rest of the wedding party. Once everything is picked, arrange for fittings and alterations.
Order wedding invitations
Now you’ve ironed out most of the details, you can design and order your wedding invitations. Aim to have these sent out two to four months before the wedding.
Sort timings of the day
With the key suppliers booked, you can plan out a schedule for the day. This will be useful for you and any vendors, and you may also use it to create an Order of the Day sign to help guide guests through the day.
Buy wedding rings
Take some time perusing – you’ll be wearing it forever!
Pick something that looks good with your engagement ring and don’t be afraid to think outside the box. You could commission something bespoke, look in antique shops or attend a make-it-yourself workshop.
Book honeymoon
After all this wedmin, this is just what you need on the horizon: a relaxing break away! Whether you choose to unwind with just the two of you or invite friends or family for a bigger getaway, start your holiday planning.
Don’t forget that whatever name you book flights under must match your passport so don’t get carried away and book in your married name if you won’t have updated all your documents by then!
Finalise smaller details
With all the big decisions made, now is the time to turn your attention to the little details. We’re talking favours, wedding party gifts, a guest book for the day and all your wedding stationery like order of service, signs and menus.
Write your vows and/or speech
If you’ve chosen to write your own vows or give a speech, dedicate some time to writing them. This shouldn’t be a last-minute job. Brainstorm, expand, edit and practise until you’re happy with your words and confident saying them.
Select readings
Readings are traditionally read by people important to the couple at various points during the ceremony. Now is a good time to pick which readings you’d like. Take inspiration from anywhere – the Bible, poetry, songs, short stories, children’s books and films could all work.
Give notice
To get legally married, you need to follow a set process to give notice. You need to book an appointment at your local register office at least 29 days before your wedding date.
A final headcount
Contact any stragglers who haven’t yet RSVPd and get a final headcount. From here, you can let your venue know and draw up an accurate seating plan.
…and breathe! While it might sound like a lot to tackle, wedding planning can be so much fun. In moments of stress, try and remember the point of it all: to celebrate the love between you two with all your favourite people on the planet. And if that fails, just think of the honeymoon.

ceremonially speaking
From civil ceremonies and celebratory ceremonies to pagan handfastings, wed looks at the many ways you can formalise and celebrate your union
However and whenever you’re thinking of getting married, there’s a host of ways to do it to suit your vision. Whether you’re living by the rule book or wanting to write your own, couples can design a day to reflect their love story by picking a mode to match, from the multitude of ways to say (or not say!) ‘I do’ that are also oh-so ‘you’.
Legally speaking…
First off, don’t forget the legal requirements of entering matrimony. To get married or form a civil partnership in England and Wales (with differing rules for Scotland and Northern Ireland), you must both be 18 years of age, not closely related nor already married or in a civil partnership. Two witnesses must be present at the wedding.
Documents required include proof of name, age, any name changes, nationality and address. Additional paperwork such as details of where and when you intend to marry must also be submitted – alongside (if applicable) a decree absolute or final order, entry visa and death certificate of your former partner. Non-UK nationals will need to check any visa requirements, and allow additional time for the notice to be processed.
A notice period of at least 29 days must be given by signing a legal statement to say you intend to get married or form a civil partnership at your local register office (the district of which you must have lived in for at least seven days), and the ceremony must be completed within 12 months of submitting this notice.
Civil Marriage
This is a non-religious legally binding marriage ceremony performed by two local authority officials called a superintendent registrar and a registrar, at a register office, registration office or venue approved by the local council. It can feature readings, music and songs, by prior agreement, but cannot include any religious or spiritual content. Two witnesses must be present.
Civil Partnership
A civil partnership legally recognises the relationship between two people and, though isn’t defined as a marriage, does involve similar responsibilities and rights such as tax benefits, inheritance and pensions. It takes place in front of a registrar and doesn’t involve a ceremony or the exchanging of vows (though both can be requested), but simply the signing of the civil partnership document in front of two witnesses. Civil partnerships are open to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples, and they are referred to as civil partners, rather than husband and wife.
Civil Partnership Conversion
Same-sex (but not opposite-sex) couples can convert a civil partnership into a marriage in England or Wales by attending an appointment at a register office to sign a ‘conversion into marriage’ declaration in front of a superintendent registrar, who must also sign the declaration (which you can also say to each other). A marriage certificate is then issued, dated with the date of the original civil partnership. Should you choose to follow the conversion with a ceremony (with or without guests), you can do so at a register office, approved premises or religious building where same-sex marriages are allowed.
Religious Ceremony
A religious marriage ceremony can take place at any Church of England church or registered religious building and must be presided over by a vicar or authorised person, such as a minister, who will need to ensure the marriage document is correctly produced, signed and posted to the local registration service for
the marriage to be registered. The ceremony must take the form of the rites and ceremonies of the Religious denomination in which you are marrying and will include some form of prescribed vows. Same-sex couples can get married in a religious building if it has been registered for them to do so.
Sequel Wedding
Sequel weddings are a two-part event whereby couples have a small ceremony or wedding followed by a larger second celebration at a later date (only one can be legally recognised). This can take the form of an elopement, virtual or micro wedding followed by a grand-scale sequel the following year.
Celebratory Ceremony
This is a way for couples to celebrate their marriage with friends and family when and wherever they want. It is free of any legal restraints and can be conducted by a professional celebrant or a friend. Your status won’t alter since the service isn’t legally binding, but it does give freedom and flexibility with regards to venue and content, and can include traditional elements such as vow and ring exchanges and readings, or anything else you personally desire, from promises to rituals such as handfasting, a sand ceremony or a ring warming.
Most couples will have a simple legal ceremony either just before or after the celebratory ceremony. Professional celebrants work with the couple to personalise the ceremony in its entirety and spend time meeting with and getting to know the couple. The celebrant will then write and conduct a ceremony which is completely unique and tailored to the couple and reflects their wishes. There are two types of professional celebrant: independent celebrants and humanists. A humanist celebrant is a member of Humanists UK and follows their philosophy and will not usually allow any religious or spiritual references in their ceremonies. An independent celebrant is led by the wishes of the couple in the ceremony content and will include religious or spiritual references and work with couples of any or differing faiths or non, to create a ceremony which is meaningful for all, they will also work with faith leaders.
Pagan Handfasting
The ancient pagan-inspired marriage ritual is usually performed by an independent celebrant or fellow pagan and involves a couple’s hands being bound with ribbon or cord to signify their union. Handfasting is not legally recognised on its own as a form of marriage. Holding hands so that the pulse points or wrists are touching, the ribbons or cords are looped around the couples’ joined hands whilst they say their vows and promises. The colours of the ribbons or cords can be accorded meanings and are chosen specifically by the couple. Family members or guests can be included in the ceremony by coming forward to place the ribbon or cord over the couples hands. Vow Renewal
However you originally married, renewing your vows is a way to celebrate your marriage and relationship. Couples can choose to periodically renew their vows every decade (or even annually!), at milestone anniversaries, after having children (who they can ask to host the reaffirmation), or to reinforce their love and commitment during turbulent times. It can occur anywhere from your home to a poignant outside space or building or a traditional house of worship - and, not being legal, can be led by a friend or a celebrant.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER
Making sure your relationship stands on firm ground is something you should consider long before the wedding. Here’s how to prep for life after the big day
words Abby Driver
Most couples spend upwards of six months planning their wedding – but what about their marriage? While it’s considered normal to agonise over the choice of font for the wedding stationery, the average spouse-tobe dedicates little headspace to what happens after the big day is over. However, the vows you make on your wedding day are a commitment to one another, through better or worse, for the rest of your lives. It makes good old-fashioned sense to spend some time thinking about what they really mean, before publicly agreeing to live by them.
Not sure where to start? A marriage preparation course can provide you with the time, guidance and structure to work through some of the common issues that crop up in marriage and help equip you both with helpful tools.
Be prepared
The point of marriage preparation is to spend some time focusing on the end goal of the wedding: your marriage – and to look at how you can ensure it’s a healthy, longlasting and mutually enjoyable relationship.
“Our courses encourage couples to consider what each of them is bringing to the relationship and their expectations for married life,” says Fran Watson, head of marriage preparation and enrichment at Marriage Care (marriagecare.org.uk), a charity that specialises in helping couples form and sustain healthy marriages. “They help them to understand and develop skills in a range of topics that are particularly important for successful committed couple relationships or marriages, such as communication, problem solving, extended family, sexuality, finances, spirituality and shared values.”
It’s also a pause to check in with where you’re at now, and provides an occasion to notice and celebrate all the positives which can easily go unnoticed in daily life.
The point of prep
“Marriage preparation offers couples the opportunity to take timeout from the pressures of everyday life and planning their wedding day to focus on each other
HOW TO CONNECT
Keen to spend some time nurturing your marriage without attending a course or counselling? Fran shares with us her top tips for preparing for marriage outside of such a structure.
Dedicate time. Put down your wedmin and clear the calendar for some marriage chat. “Set some time aside to properly communicate about your relationship, rather than the plans for the wedding,” says Fran.
Banish distractions. In our 24/7 switched-on society, you need to be deliberate about where you put your attention. “Put the phones away so that you can focus on each other and not be interrupted by anything that’s happening in the outside world; ring fence those particular moments together,” says Fran.
Be curious. “There are lots of ideas on the internet that share with couples what makes a good marriage but actually just being curious about each other and asking open questions – those that don’t just have a yes or no answer – can spark conversations,” says Fran. Explore areas like values, priorities, expectation, communication, children, sex and finances.
Discuss your vows. “Look at the vows and promises you will make to one another on your wedding day and what they mean to each of you,” says Fran.
Agree on a support network. We all need advice and practical help during turbulent times. “Decide together on those people around you who are not only friends or family but who are advocates for your marriage and will be a good support to you both if times get tough,” advises Fran.
and their relationship. We know from feedback that many couples find this opportunity to ‘hit the pause button’ invaluable; it may not have originally been seen as important but once they’ve had time and space together to ‘breathe’ and nurture their upcoming marriage, most feel very differently,” says Fran.
Having the difficult conversations now is important, too. The divorce rate in the UK hovers around 42% (though some good news: the latest data from the Office for National Statistics reports the lowest number of divorces since 1971) and research has found people get divorced for all sorts of reasons including lack of commitment and excessive conflict. Getting ahead of any issues and coming up with helpful strategies in advance is a good way to future-proof your marriage.
“We know that those who complete marriage preparation are far more likely to be able to
cultivate not only long but healthy marriages and family lives and are more predisposed to seek early help if they run into difficulties,” adds Fran.
The big issues
How do we fight fairly? Who pays for what? Do we want children? There are certain hot topics within every relationship, and learning how to navigate them effectively before committing for the long haul is wise.
“Every couple is totally unique, as is their relationship, so we find that what comes up tends to be too,” explains Fran. “However, couples often find the need to look at the ways they communicate, particularly when upset, the way they solve problems as a couple and the influence of external pressures on their relationship such as from extended family, finances or the amount of quality time they spend together.”
A COUPLE TELLS ALL
Keen to hear how it all works in practice? Wed reader Olivia took a marriage preparation course with fiancé Rob…
“The one-day course – called ‘marriage by design’ – was built around having important conversations, and covered topics including values, expectations, friendship, communication, sex, children, financial management, in-laws, resolving conflict and commitment,” says Olivia. “A second part of the preparation was to each take a survey about our expectations of our relationship, values, thoughts on the future, how we viewed our communication and life. We then talked about areas which we didn’t quite align on in our answers.
The day was really fun and we enjoyed it. It really just enabled us to have conversations. We realised that it would be important for us to continue to keep ‘dating’ each other, making time to go on regular date nights, or just talk in the evening rather than watch television or get sucked into the routine of life.
The survey illustrated how well we know each other, as well as how aware we are of what we might disagree on or might not align on.
For example, I am a bit more of a spender and Rob is much more of a saver. It enabled us to talk about things in the future like outgoings and who would pay for certain things if was on maternity leave and what the expectations would be.
We would consider doing another course, like a ‘marriage MOT’, as we think it’s important to keep checking in, making sure you are giving each other what you need; for example, are you really meeting each other’s love languages.”
THE TREND REPORT
Here’s our round-up of the latest trends to help you design a day that’s as uniquely wow as it is now
Though your main priority will be to make your wedding distinctly your own, you might also wish to incorporate some of today’s trends into proceedings. Whether you’re opting for a vintage-style affair, festival vibe, extended weekend or elopement wedding, one of the ways to make it both brilliantly bespoke and memorably current is to feature a few top-trending elements.
By adding a mark of modernity, you’re nodding to the date of your nuptials in so-now style. You could focus on a single aspect such as the catering or weave a number of gestures into your day, from the flowers and favours to the colour scheme. The result will be a celebration steeped in present-day personality.
We’ve handpicked a few of the most happening wedding trends to whet your appetite...
Wedding cake meadows
The food remains one of the most important aspects of weddings, with every morsel designed to reflect the couple’s love story, wedding theme and tastes. All edibles and quaffables from the welcome drinks and canapés to (every course of) the wedding breakfast and evening banquet are (quite literally) on the table when it comes to the look, flavour and meaning of your menu. In particular, it’s the sweet endnote that’s having a standout moment in wedding world in the form of cake meadows. Showcasing the cake amidst stunning floral arrangements, the effect is as romantic and whimsical as it is nature-inspired. Elevating your baked confections into a wow-worthy centrepiece, the idea is to reflect a field of wildflowers, blossoming garden or wild woodland scene, combining florals and cake for an all-out sensory fest. Picture cakes with hand-painted florals, sculpted floral icing and buttercream flowers dressed with winding foliage, petals and buds – all sitting atop or amongst the most striking floral displays.
Maximalism
The ‘more is more’ movement continues to reign supreme, favouring a bright and eclectic mishmash of styles to achieve a uniquely over-the-top feel to your day. The main hallmarks are an abundance of detailing and décor, from bold colour schemes and clashing prints to textured elements and statement lighting. Think rainbow, monochrome, neon and jewel tones spliced with disco balls, leopard print accessories, balloon installations, a champagne tower, striped furnishings, neon signs, statement florals (hanging or aerial arrangements; floral archway or moongate), and a smattering of giant potted palms and trees. Then there’s the detailing, such as decorative china, patterned linens, kitsch stationery and signage, ornate lampshades, antique vases and eye-catching aisle-ways, flooring and backdrops or walls.
Colour, colour, colour
Colour is a key component of current and future wedding trends, but it’s not all about being bold and bright. Though attentiongrabbing palettes are de rigueur, the trick is in the combination and application of colour. Layering, ombré, monochrome, pattern and playfulness all lend interest and individuality to the final look. Specific colour schemes that are proving popular include pastels, paredback neutrals, electric brights and jewel and wine tones. Meanwhile Pantone’s 2024 colour of the year Peach Fuzz looks set to inspire weddings for many seasons to come, with the latest expert predictions citing ‘rich, earthy and organic’ hues and ‘new classics’ including deep blue-violet, orange, gold, purple, grey and leafy greens as next year’s top contenders.
Wedding weekends
If a drawn-out love affair with your beau/friends/family sounds like a not-tobe-missed prospect, then an extended wedding will allow you to revel in your company and sustain the celebrations for days on end. Whatever kind of wedding you’re organising – from elopements and intimate gatherings to large-scale events – two or three-day parties are a modern lust-have. Typically starting on the Friday afternoon or evening (or day before the wedding if you’re planning a midweek event), weekend weddings aim to involve guests in the preparatory phase whilst maximising the opportunity for mixing ahead of the main event. This could take the form of a day or night out/in (hike and lunch, wine tasting, afternoon barbecue, evening supper, cocktail hour, movie night) followed the next morning by breakfast or even an activity, depending on the schedule of your wedding day (sunrise/ sunset ceremonies and after-parties are more trends to consider!). The day after, newlyweds can host anything from a farewell brunch to a day of activities or relaxation (pool party, garden games, surfing trip, boat excursion, bike tour, food truck picnic). Much of this will depend on your venue and location, so think about how to utilise and make the most of these and the region’s stunning natural landscapes.

Eco-friendly weddings
Sustainability is (quite rightly) still very much a thing. And it’s easy to make your event greener, even if you’re not able to eradicate its carbon footprint entirely. Simple swaps and additions can both save money and make a longlasting positive impact. With virtually every element, you’ll be able to find ways to make more environmentally sound choices. For example, you might consider sourcing your dress/suit secondhand (vintage, charity shop, preloved outlets), refashioning old garments (family heirlooms, favourite pieces) or buying, hiring or borrowing outfits made from recycled, Fairtrade or biodegradable fabrics. Your food and flowers can be locally grown or harvested and donated to a homeless shelter, hospice or care home after the event. Research greener alternatives and the provenance of things, borrow, salvage and hire your décor, furniture and props, and arrange the most
earth-friendly disposal of items possible (gifting, recycling or repurposing).
Scentscaping
It’s not all about the aesthetics. Along with the way your wedding looks, sounds and feels, couples are treating all the senses with a particular emphasis on the aroma. Introducing: scentscaping. An often overlooked aspect of the day, fragrance has become one of the leading modes for a memorable, personalised and top-trending wedding. A multi-layered approach starts with the couple’s scent (perfumes, body washes, lotions, balms) and filters into a host of features such as the flowers (bouquet, confetti, floral arrangements), food and drink (barbecues, coffee bars, edible flowers, open fire feasts), favours (wax melts, scented sweets, chocolates, handmade soap) and ambient venue space (reed diffusers, candles, room mists, botanical palets). Just remember to blend your notes and keep it on the more subtle side to avoid clashing or overpowering aromas.
Mindful weddings
Couples are increasingly focusing on the wellness of their guests along with the intention and meaning of their day, adding rituals, activities and atmospheric touches for a wedding replete with mindfulness. You might want to infuse the likes of sound baths, spa services and group yoga sessions into your schedule or space, or simply plant thoughtful details that show you’ve considered the individual needs and spirit of your guests. By incorporating moments, experiences and spaces that will invite or fulfil a sense of awareness and nurturing – such as adding worship or meditation to outdoor ceremonies, quiet zones for younger/ older guests, plant-based menus or having a grounding ‘first look’ before your ceremony – you can create a celebration that’s personal, present and poignant.

PARTY ON
After-parties have never been more en vogue. With wedding days extending from sun-up to sundown – or lasting entire weekends (or even longer) – the opportunity to celebrate well beyond the ‘I dos’ allows couples to unashamedly revel in and share their newlywed status with those they love the most.
Memory-making and people-pleasing is what it’s all about. From private gentlemen’s club style afterparties for a select few to dancing outdoors under the stars and arranging a schedule of fun, adventure, activity and flavour the following day, wedding afterparties are decidedly all the rage.
We’ve looked at the latest trends and asked planners and just-weds to share their stories to help you plan the wedding pre or after-party of your dreams...
Welcome party
Prime your guests for the string of parties ahead and set the tone with a pre-wedding party. The perfect icebreaker and way to relax ahead of W-day while
amping up the sense of occasion, guests can meet and greet ahead of the main event, and couples can freely schmooze to ensure they’ve adequately welcomed everyone – especially those travelling from afar.
“For weddings where guests have to travel and stay overnight, it is always nice to organise a gathering the day before,” says wedding planner, coordinator and consultant Laura Dalton from Kept Weddings (keptweddings.co.uk). “It’s a great way for the wedding couple to be able to say their hellos and catch up with people prior to the wedding day – meaning on the day itself, they can spend more time together as a newlywed couple.” This could be anything from a simple sit-down meal or drinks reception at or near the venue (or even your house) to a dining experience or evening out.
Chloe and Devon planned a wedding weekend at Kilminorth with 75 of their guests staying on-site in cottages with hot tubs and glamping tents. “We had exclusive use of the venue for this time and tried to personalise the whole weekend to all our favourite things,” explains Chloe, who commenced their celebrations with a Friday night extravaganza. “We hired The Fishermen’s Chippy food truck who came and catered for more than 100 guests,” she says. “We played table tennis and had a golf awards ceremony as Devon arranged a golf tournament in the day, with prizes and trophies handed out. It was
“Think about how to have enough time to connect with everyone and relax,” says Imogen, whose wedding at Cornish Tipi Weddings combined foodie events with activities that took in the venue and local area’s scenery. “We had a welcome barbecue at the tipi field where we were camping on the Friday evening, a lake swim on the Sunday morning then an afternoon at the beach and evening dinner back at Cornish Tipi Weddings. It meant we really got to see everyone and the wedding wasn’t such a blur.”
“Please yourselves with an after-party you’ll reminisce about for many smile-inducing years to come”
activity, such as a cliff path stroll, surf, sea swim or spot of meditation. Depending on the time and location of your ceremony, you could arrange a drinks reception ahead of the vows or even a lunch. Think about when your guests will be arriving and provide them with a burst of welcoming entertainment and refreshments to help them to engage with the party spirit, such as with an early cocktail hour, saxophonist or vocal performance. Post-ceremony, start the party section of the day with a variety of options from garden games and a live band to drinks, canapés, a dance or circus act, magician, live portrait or landscape artist. Tailor the party to the space, people, feel and time of day. That might mean starting with a sunrise sea shanty
singer and finishing with an orchestral fireworks finale.
“A band or DJ is a must for creating an epic after-party,” announces Laura. “They bring life to the music and read the room to keep people on the dance floor all night long. Side entertainment such as a photo booth and professional dancers – along with props – add to people’s energy and the pictures. Think glow sticks, customised glasses and maybe even a limbo stick!” If you’re keen on building an after-party into your schedule, check the venue will cater to it with regards to space, noise restrictions and licences. Many are primed for after-parties with separate spaces or buildings. Kat and Kieran chose Pencarrow for its
versatility and party-ready facilities. “Our night ended with dancing to our band, then donning ‘silent disco’ headsets and leading everyone into the woods to the Nightcap Bar. We danced around the firepit under the disco ball into the wee hours before falling into our tipis in the glamping field,” says Kieran.
For Jess, Kingston Estate provided the perfect place for her and Joe to party with those who wanted to prolong the merriment. “We moved into the secret Undercroft Bar, which was a hidden gem and the last surprise for our guests, where we kept the dancing going until the early hours,” she reveals. When the night is over, you might fancy a final dance under the
moon, a nightcap in the bar or cup of hot chocolate and candlelit bubble bath back in your suite before slumber beckons.
The day-after, after-party
Once the day is done, an increasing number of couples are opting for a day dedicated to keeping the celebratory atmosphere alive.
At Kilminorth, Chloe and Devon’s families set up a barbecue and pool party, which was followed by an eclectic mix of events. “We had the best day talking about the wedding. We played cricket, ate wedding cake and then finished with a silent disco until the
early hours,” reminisces Chloe. You might wish to stay at your venue for a day of lounging, food and drink.
Offer activities there or nearby for guests to enjoy such as clay pigeon shooting, lawn games, a boat trip, country roam and picnic; or provide further on-site entertainment in the form of a jazz quartet and tea party.
Laura encourages couples to get creative once the formalities are over to fully immerse themselves in those final hours of celebrations with loved ones.
“If your guests have opted to stay for another night, you could finish off the celebrations with another party in the evening with drinks, more dancing
or something a little bit different like bandeoke, barn dancing or maybe even a murder mystery,” she suggests.
Aim to utilise the time and space to maximum benefit while considering the needs and whims of all guests present and, of course – and most importantly –please yourselves with a so-you after-party you’ll reminisce about for many smile-inducing years to come.

forget me not
How will you look back on your wedding? Because when the memories start to fade, you’ll be wishing for ways to reflect, relive and rejoice in your day and the many loves it contained.
The wedding album is, of course, a key memento to treasure and leaf through for years to come. But rather than relying on the album as the sole family heirloom and keepsake of your day, an increasing number of couples are embracing the trend toward new and multiple ways of recording their wedding. You’ll be able to listen to, look at and touch precious remnants and moments of one of the most love-filled days of your life.
From artist’s impressions such as landscape paintings, venue illustrations and guest portraits to audio guest books and the most spectacular forms of photography and videography, here’s our lowdown on the latest ways to record and materialise your matrimonials...
Photography
The photo album remains the seminal way to record weddings, to capture the essence and allow you
to look back at your day for the rest of your lives. Whether you favour a traditional set of images or are open to the possibility of experimental and innovative forms of photography, the images of your love will remain the primary portal to your memories.
Your choice of photographer may have no bearing on the day, for example – you simply love a particular style; or you might want to pick someone with experience of shooting at your venue or your type of wedding, such as those specialising in elopements or outdoor weddings.
The best way to decide is to match your vision with theirs – and to discuss your requirements and their ability to achieve them. From there, fine-tune the pragmatics and aesthetics to tailor a package that will best represent you and your day, for an album you’ll excitedly turn to time and time again.
Trends-wise, the latest host of techniques are going back to traditional methods whilst ensuring weddings are captured in the most creative, unique and beautiful of ways. Photographer Thomas Frost
if it is falling!” Tom offers hybrid services including photography and videography, along with content shooting, which he describes as “a very useful extra that couples like. They can have the raw footage, or we can make a reel or edit into longer form.”
“I am also adding hybrid photography, where film a little bit while photographing, so they also get a motion picture of the day, in the same style as my photos,” says photographer Verity Westcott (veritywestcott.com) who expertly blends the use of Polaroids and 35mm photography with all-day photography, “which is a really cool way of getting different styles of images on your wedding day”.
Audio and alternative guest books
For a fun and alternative take on traditional written guest books, audio versions are emerging as another wedding day must-have for couples keen for something ‘more.’
In short, guests speak into a phone to record their message to you, after which the compilation will provide a keepsake that can be digital or physical (a CD, USB drive or even a vinyl record). Alternatively, video guest books work in a similar way as audio, via a video kiosk that records your guests’ messages, which are then edited into a compilation film.
(thomasfrostphotography.com) lists these as a “film photography revival”, whereby film is incorporated into the images for a “nostalgic feel and a romantic, organic quality that digital sometimes can’t replicate”. Along with candid, unposed shots and post-wedding photo shoots (which could include outdoor adventures during micro/elopement weddings or in the weeks following the event), Tom is a fan of flash photography and motion blur.
“I’m loving the use of creative flash techniques paired with intentional motion blur to add a sense of movement and energy to the photos. It brings out the fun, spontaneous moments of the day,” he enthuses. “Also – the legal use of a drone,” continues Tom, who is a fully qualified and insured drone pilot. “Drones give such a great perspective of the location or venue, especially in Cornwall where the land and sea meet.”
Special effects are another consideration. “Smoke bombs are great for adding colour and drama,” he says. “Back-lit rain or bubble spray is perfect for when it gets dark – and makes the most of the rain
You might also opt for a written or physical guest book, and if you’re looking for a creative and idiosyncratic version in keeping with your theme and personalities, there are plenty of ideas. These include the use of Polaroid cameras and photo booths, fingerprint trees, wall art, pebbles, a wishing tree, puzzles and games such as Jenga, message in a bottle, photo books, vintage postcards, a coffee table book and vintage typewriter. Repurposing or reusing old, treasured or everyday items that you can display in your marital home is another idea, from your surfboard or snowboard to your guitar, canoe, paddleboard, globe, table, piece of art or photo frame. And if you don’t fancy any kind of guestbook, commission an artist to create a ‘live’ physical keepsake of your day such as a venue illustration, landscape painting or portrait sketches.
Videography & film
Wedding films have come a long way over the years, with a plethora of options available to couples today, from drone footage to music videos.
“A well-made wedding video can encapsulate the essence of the event, from vows and speeches to laughter, reactions and the overall atmosphere,” says Sam Strachan from Timeless Weddings (timelessweddings.co.uk).
“Choosing the right style depends on your personality as a couple, your wedding theme and the type of memory you want to create from your special day,” he continues, before describing the range that videographers can shoot and edit into a bespoke film.
Along with short-form videos (five to 10 minutes long) that are ideal for sharing online, Sam cites
cinematic storytelling as a popular trend. “This mimics the look and feel of a movie with dramatic angles, slow motion and emotional music for a final product that feels polished and artistic,” he explains. Then there’s documentary footage: “this is capturing the day in a raw, real-time format, recording everything as it happens without staging or heavy editing, focusing on authenticity”.
For a more classic format, videographers can create a traditional film in chronological order or make it a more personal and narrativedriven piece with the inclusion of interviews and voiceovers. If it’s more of a retro vibe you’re after, then shooting (such as with old film cameras) and editing techniques can be employed to produce a nostalgic video “to give the footage a grainy, timeless feel, evoking memories of earlier decades”.
For a more modern film, you could opt for a music video approach, which “incorporates candid and staged shots, edited to the rhythm of the song”, explains Sam. “It often emphasises fun and upbeat moments from the day.”
However you wish to replay your day, trust the person recording it. “Choose a photographer or videographer who takes the time to understand your unique love story,” implores Tom. “Each couple’s journey is different, and your wedding visuals should reflect that. Allow them creative freedom – when couples are relaxed and trust the professionals, it’s easier to capture authentic moments.”

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR VENUE
Before you get swept up in a whirlwind of “I dos” and venue contracts, get clued up on the essential questions to ask
Choosing your wedding venue is a big decision, and one from which many of your other decisions will follow. Before you make a booking you need to ensure that the venue in question can accommodate your wedding vision and budget. Here, award-winning wedding planner Hazel Parsons from Out of The Ordinary Weddings (outoftheordinaryweddings.com) shares her advice on the key questions to ask.
Must-haves:
Guest limit: How many guests can the venue comfortably accommodate for the ceremony, reception and evening party?
Dates: What's their availability like for your desired date? Are there any seasonal discounts? Are there any restrictions you need to consider on peak dates?
Your ceremony: Does the venue have a dedicated ceremony space inside and outside and do you have a choice of locations? Are they licensed for legal ceremonies?
Exclusivity: Will you have exclusive use of the venue on your wedding day, or will there be other events happening?
Parking and access: Does the venue have a designated car park for you and your guests to use
or is there a car park nearby? If not, do you need to organise travel for guests?
Facilities: Are there adequate restrooms that are easily accessible? Do you need to hire in toilets?
Pricing: Break down the costs and what's included in the venue fee (accommodation, hire period, staffing, tableware, a serviced bar, furniture, wedding ceremony licence). Every venue prices differently!
Supplier flexibility and important details:
Catering: Does the venue provide catering or can you bring in your preferred caterer? If so, is there a pre-approved list?
Suppliers: Are there any restrictions on other suppliers, like musicians, DJs, photographers, florists or décor?
Wedding coordinator: Does the venue provide a dedicated on-site coordinator for the wedding day? What will their role and responsibilities be?
Entertainment: What are the licensing restrictions regarding music and alcohol?
Beverages: Can you provide your own alcohol or is there a corkage fee?
Access: What time can you access the venue for setup on your wedding day?
Venue specifics and special touches:
Accommodation: Does the venue or surrounding area offer on-site or nearby accommodation for your guests?
Finishing touches: Are candles, fireworks and confetti permitted at the venue?
Wrap-up and logistics:
End time: What time does your hire period end on the wedding day? Is there a curfew or noise limitations?
Clean-up: Who is responsible for cleaning up after the event? How is recycling and general rubbish disposal handled?
By asking these questions upfront, you'll gain a clear understanding of the venue’s capabilities and potential limitations. It allows for a smooth, stress-free wedding planning experience. Next steps...explore with confidence and find your perfect wedding venue!

small weddings of dreams
These couples chose a tucked-away corner of the South-west for their elopement weddings
“We wanted our wedding day to be relaxed, true to us and surrounded by the people we love most”
Zoe and Jacob relished a sun-filled elopement at Brickhouse Vineyard
What made you choose an elopement?
“We wanted to get married relatively quickly after becoming engaged and were costconscious having purchased a house the same year,” says Zoe. “We felt an elopement was the perfect way to involve our immediate family and stay focused on the real meaning of getting married: bringing two people and two families together, and that’s exactly what our elopement did.”
What drew you to Brickhouse Vineyard?
“The location, chic country roundhouse, calm atmosphere and nature setting align perfectly with our style and we instantly knew it was ‘the one’. Nowhere else compared. We knew we wanted our wedding day to be relaxed, true to us and surrounded by the people we love most and so that’s exactly what we did.”
How did the day pan out?
“Following the ceremony, we had a champagne toast and delicious lemon and Victoria sponge wedding cake, which was made by Jacob’s sister Cassidy, whilst taking in the stunning surroundings. We opted for country music, beautiful wild summer flowers and a flower meadow, and we were blessed with sunshine, which meant we would really make the most of the outside space. After our time at Brickhouse Vineyard came at an end, we all headed to a nearby country pub called The Ley Arms for traditional pub food and spent the evening socialising with our closest family before heading to bed in the boutique rooms.
What stood out for you?
“Our photographer Meg went above and beyond, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the images she captured. The staff at Brickhouse Vineyard were also attentive, warm and calming; nothing was too much to ask and no question too silly. Brickhouse Vineyard was everything we could have dreamed of and more, and we will always cherish our perfect day.”
What are your words of advice for couples considering an elopement?
“Each wedding is unique, be true to yourself as a couple and focus on what you want and what’s important to you – after all, the day is yours. We were blown away with the beauty of Brickhouse, the attention to detail but simplicity of the day with some commenting it was their favourite wedding to date. It doesn’t have to be extravagant and expensive to be perfect and exactly what you dreamed of.”
“The whole day was just filled with love and laughter, and it was so personal”
Christy and George embraced a stress-free day at their Millbrook Estate wedding
What made you choose an elopement?
“Ultimately, we wanted something intimate that was just about us and the love we have for each other,” says Christy. “My twin sister had a big wedding and we just wanted something stress-free for ourselves and our families - something outside of the pressures of other people’s opinions, family politics and the large cost of a bigger wedding.”
What drew you to Millbrook Estate?
“The beauty of Millbrook. The grounds just looked so magical; pictures don’t even do it justice. The fireplace and intimate nature of the summerhouse where we said
“I do” just added to the romantic, intimate atmosphere we were looking for. It also has a pamper room for either partner to use and get ready so you still get part of the traditional not seeing each other before the wedding. The cottages further add more of an amazing, romantic touch to it. There was just something about Millbrook; there wasn’t anywhere quite like it.”
How did the day pan out?
“The day was everything we wanted and more. We spent the whole day in a kind of bubble. It was so stress-free, which is mad as we got married the day after a storm –George jokes that it stopped raining and the sun came out just as I was walking to him, like it was a sign it’s meant to be. The whole day was just filled with love and laughter and it was so personal. Being able to properly spend the whole day together was just perfect.”
What stood out for you?
“The registrar we had was hilarious. My husband bought a ring that was a few sizes too small, which we didn’t realise. As we exchanged rings, couldn’t get the ring on his finger so he put it on himself, for the registrar to come out with: ‘Well, that’s not going anywhere anytime soon.’ Everyone just couldn’t stop laughing after that. That was just the whole day - laughter and happiness. I would also say, find a photographer who will do everything they can to get you that perfect picture. Maria literally climbed into the woods just to get the perfect picture; she kept us smiling and laughing all day.”
What are your words of advice for couples considering an elopement?
“Just go for it. Ultimately your wedding is all about you and your other half, and the love you have for each other. Eloping helps you focus on the things you ultimately want for your day. If you’re looking for something intimate and romantic that’s very personal, then I would definitely say elope.”

“An elopement was the perfect way to commit to each other without feeling the pressure”
Jeneah and Sophie embraced the elements at their wildly romantic BoHo Cornwall Elopements wedding
What made you choose an elopement?
“Both Sophie and are very passionate about the ability to show each other our love without having a large wedding,” explains Jeneah. “Even a small wedding can easily snowball into something bigger than anticipated. We both envisioned our day to be small and intimate, sharing what we feel is important – our love we share for each other. After a lot of discussion, we felt an elopement was the perfect way to commit to each other without feeling the pressure that comes with organising a bigger wedding. We both have large families and friendship groups and choosing who to invite seemed like an impossible task. Therefore, we completely removed the pressure and did what we felt was right for us individually and as a couple.”
What drew you to BoHo Cornwall Elopements?
“I have always dreamed of a wedding in a castle, while Sophie always envisioned a wedding near a beach. BoHo Cornwall Elopements offers a perfect combination of both of our dreams. Our first date was a weekend in Cornwall, so it holds a special place in our hearts. Being a same-sex wedding, it was extremely important for us that the venue we chose held the same values as us; this was highlighted on their website and instantly made us feel we’d be comfortable and welcomed. Once we spoke to the team, we knew it was the perfect location for us.”
How did the day pan out?
“Our ceremony was intimate, with only the registrars, witnesses and ourselves present, and everyone went the extra mile to ensure our day was simply perfect. We carried handmade bouquets and took our vows in the candlelit castle. After windswept photographs on the coastal path and shoreline, we tucked into fish and chips on the beach. It was totally relaxed.”
What stood out for you?
“The fact that we had never met these individuals, yet they were a part of one of the most important days of our lives sounds crazy, but they made us feel like we had known them for years. The feeling of pure joy and care shown towards us individually and as a couple showed throughout. After our individual vows were read out, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.”
What are your words of advice for couples considering an elopement?
“Do it! You won’t regret it. Your wedding day should be all about you, don’t feel guilty about doing what’s best for you. We asked family and friends what they would have done differently at their weddings and the feedback we had was often ‘I wish I got to spend more time with my wife/husband’ or ‘we would have made it more intimate and not felt we had to invite everyone.’ Elopements can be tailored entirely to you. We truly believe elopements are the way forward and more people should know that you don’t need to travel to Vegas to elope.”

“It was more beautiful in person than we could have dreamed of”
Emily and Sade relished their unique al fresco wedding day at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens
What made you choose an elopement?
“We chose an elopement for several reasons. We have a large family, spread all over the place, and it would have been stressful trying to arrange a date, time and location to suit everyone. We also work long, stressful shifts and we never do anything that is just for us, so we felt this was the right thing to do,” says Emily. “Ultimately we decided to suit ourselves, as our wedding day is about us.”
What drew you to Fallen Angel and Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens?
“ We fell in love with Fallen Angel in Mousehole and Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens before we actually visited in person. It felt intimate and special, and even though Tremenheere is an outdoor venue, there is a wet-weather alternative so it has everything we could have possibly wanted.”
How did the day pan out?
“We got ready at our accommodation, taking in the outstanding sea views as we had our hair and make-up done. Our photographer Verity was kind enough to be our chauffeur to Tremenheere. Having no family or friends or anyone else we knew there with us, Verity was the rock that held it all together and was a real friend on the day.
We were utterly blessed with the weather. Just as we reached the pagoda for our ceremony, the sun broke through and we had glorious blue skies and warm sunshine. The views are simply stunning. It looked, and felt, like a tropical paradise, just for us. It was more beautiful in person than we could have dreamed of.
Back at Fallen Angel, we had a three-course meal, which was incredible. Then it was just us, and we had time to just sit and reflect. Verity had taken some Polaroid pictures throughout, so we had a perfect, instant memento from the day.”
What stood out for you?
“Once we had decided on eloping, we’d built up a picture in our minds of how we wanted the day to go. We didn’t want any stress or any strict timings to follow, we just wanted a calm and easy-going day. This is exactly what we had. Nothing was rushed or felt forced. It was the best thing we could have ever done for us; having our day solely for us made everything feel even more special.”
Do you have any words of advice for couples considering an elopement?
“I think anyone considering an elopement should absolutely go for it. Our best advice would be to make early contact with your suppliers, especially if everything is being planned via email and online, and to keep in regular contact with them. We were lucky that we had such fantastic people and companies to work with, and they made everything seamless and stress-free from the moment we booked. Also, don’t feel guilty about doing your day your way!”

run away with me
Fancy slipping away quietly and doing your day your way? As elopement weddings continue to grow in popularity, we look at the tips and tricks to make it really wedding-worthy words Hannah May
Thinking of eloping? Runaway weddings are all the rage, and it’s no wonder why: short or nonexistent guest lists, the option to wed wherever and however you choose with practically no restrictions or people pleasing required but yourselves.
However, though you may wish to throw all caution to the wind in favour of total spontaneity, elopements do require a bit of pre-thought. From the venue and décor to the photography, food and ceremony, going small still has a substantial checklist to tackle. But by considering each component with only your whims and needs in mind, you’ll design the dreamiest day that’s as loved-up, stress-free and unashamedly all about you as your heart’s desire.
Two wedding planners share some tips as we delve into the main things to consider when planning an elopement wedding...
Put your needs first
“This is one of the main reasons you chose to elope in the first place!” says Rebecca Green from Rebel & Anchor (rebelandanchor.co.uk). Pick the fundamentals – the time, place and type of wedding – with only yourselves in mind and add the final details and
flourishes as you please. If you’re planning on having a few guests then you’ll need to factor them in, but the self-serving motto remains the same.
Along with the when and where, the other main things to consider here are the itinerary and order of service. Rip up the rulebook and randomly mix it up or stick to a traditional schedule to enjoy every element together as a couple. You might want to start your day with a sunrise ceremony and photo shoot followed by a loved-up picnic or brunch or opt for a midwinter wedding cosying up at a coastal retreat together. Don’t like the idea of a three-course wedding breakfast?
Go out to your favourite restaurant for dinner. Hire a private chef, cook a barbecue or arrange a takeaway delivery – the choice is entirely yours.
Whatever the weather
The gist is to embrace every aspect of your elopement – including the weather. And the great thing about elopements is that you can change, add or ditch things last minute, as it’s entirely ‘your’ day. So if there’s a deluge post-ceremony, reschedule your photos for the golden hour once the rain stops, or even for the next day. Or, if you wake to ominous skies, arrange a spontaneous first look or pre-ceremony shoot with your photographer instead.
Alternatively, if you’re gifted an unexpected window of light, take full advantage and postpone other events until later in the day in favour of a trip to the beach or countryside (with or without your photographer). Simply allow your desires to drive the itinerary along with your responses to what the day delivers to maximise your surroundings, opportunities and precious time together.
Find local suppliers “Book people you really get along with, as they’re the ones you’re going to be spending the day with. They’ll
“Don’t worry about the rain – your photos will look stunning and your experience will be incredible, whether it’s sunny or rainy,” says Sophie Walker from Sophie Walker Weddings (sophiewalkerweddings. co.uk). Though it’s important to think about the season with regards to venue choice, budget and preference (imagine the wild romance of a Christmas wedding for two!), be mindful that you can’t control the weather. Having said that, you can consider and mitigate it during the decision-making process (such as indoor contingencies for an al fresco ceremony) – and simply make the most of it during the event (backlit shoot in the rain, anyone?)
also know all the secret spots!” says Sophie.
Elopements are all about forging relationships, since it’ll be just the two or only a few of you present – so anybody else that’s involved will need to fit into the couple/group dynamic and structure of the day. For example, there’s a selection of photographers who specialise in elopements and would have worked at your venue before – which is key to finding familiar and comfortable ground between you, them and the venue, along with any other suppliers that they may already have rapport with. As elopements/micro weddings are small in number, this will help you to establish a harmonious, unobtrusive presence, allowing you to focus on each other and completely immerse yourselves undistracted into your day.
Local suppliers can also help with strategy and on-theday coordination, as well as give indispensable advice about how to plan and execute your vision in the best, most budget-friendly, personality-packed way. Unlike you, they’ve done it all before, so trust their expertise and knowledge.
It’s about you
“Get rid of the ‘what will Mum and Dad think?’ from your brain; they will likely just be genuinely happy you’ve married your love,” says Sophie.
Make choices that reflect you both while perhaps nodding to all the other loves in your lives – whether they’re present or not. And remember, there are other ways to involve people even if you’re removing them from the main event itself, such as by posting a
piece of wedding cake, sending the photos/wedding film or hosting an after-party or post-wedding gathering to celebrate with your nearest and dearest.
If you do want to invite a select few, then choose those you couldn’t bear to get wed without, as opposed to those you feel obliged or pressurised into asking. This might include a parents-only invite, close family only or one friend each. Alternatively, you might want to personalise the moment further by including a beloved pet, so take the liberty of arranging for your beloved hound to be ring-bearer, choose a venue with a farm, book a horse-drawn carriage, or, if you’re having a home/back garden wedding, your furry friends will already be in attendance!
Wear what you want!
“Go full bridal if you want to, go sequinned jumpsuit or dress comfortably – whatever you want!” says Rebecca. “Do really let your style shine through; you don’t need 100 people to make you feel amazing.”
This speaks to the freedom of doing exactly what you want – especially the dress code. Whatever makes you feel the way you want to feel on your W-day – wear (and do) it! And if you want one/two/three dress changes too, then go for it!
You might want to keep it casual and cosy for most of the day, donning a dress and suit for the ceremony and photo shoot before swapping back to your sweats to feast and lounge in front of the fire. Or you might choose formal wear as part of a timeless and traditional approach and to enhance the sense of occasion.
If other people will be there, you may ask them to don something in keeping with your venue/theme/schedule (think adventure elopements), request relaxed attire or ask them to wear their glitziest outfits. Again, there’s no ‘done thing’ here and the onus is always about pleasing yourselves first.
Yes, book the cake
“Even if it’s just for the two of you, you can always have it as a midnight feast!” reminds Sophie.
Without guests (or with just a few), it will be the little events and details that linger in your memory long after the event, so some extra attention to these will ensure an ambience-filled and unforgettable elopement. Don’t feel you have to deprive yourself of any feature because it’s ‘just’ the two of you, from the flowers and cake to the table settings, entertainment and first dance.
Create an atmosphere and space that you can truly revel in, whether it’s a sand-between-the-toes ceremony and beach barbecue, fairy-lit woodland celebration, mini festival with food trucks and decorated tipi or a romantic treetop escape nestling in front of a wood-burner.
Incorporate any and everything that will achieve your vision, from a harpist or live vocalist to full-day catering services, jaw-dropping décor, a magician, portrait artist, photo booth, champagne tower or chocolate fountain. Whether two or 200 people will be present, you deserve to celebrate your day, your way. Just don’t forget to book the cake!

“It was wonderful to share this special day with all our loved ones and see everyone just having a blast!”
Summer Daze
Kerry and Toby chose summery shades for their celebrations in the Devon countryside
Kerry and Toby became firm friends when they were placed next to each other in a class seating arrangement at university. “Fast-forward a couple of years and we took a plunge on progressing our friendship to a relationship, and we certainly don’t look back on that decision now!” says Toby.
He chose 1st December to pop the question. “It felt so right to have this special moment together, which we will cherish forever,” says Kerry. “It was our not-so-little secret between just the two of us, until we both felt ready to announce our news to the world!”
Opting for a summer wedding in the Devon countryside, Kerry and Toby chose a fresh and airy aesthetic for their celebrations at Deer Park. “We wanted to keep the look simplistic and clean. We focused on warm creams, ivory, blush pinks and fresh greens as well as navy accents with the suits,” she explains. Kerry’s light floral embellished dress, bridesmaids in blush frocks and arrangements of soft hued blooms carried the look. “We had floral table runners alongside tea light candles in dainty holders to tie the engagement theme into our wedding day,” she says.
St Giles’ Church in Sidbury made the perfect setting for the pair to exchange vows. “We decided to have an intimate, unplugged service in a quaint little church in the family village of Sidbury,” says Toby. “It was special for us to hold our ceremony in a place of meaning to us, and we really felt that there.” From the church choir and organist adding gusto to the hymns to the church bells ringing as they left the church, the couple savoured every moment of their ceremony before enjoying a drive along Sidmouth seafront.
Arriving at Deer Park, guests enjoyed canapés, drinks and mini crazy golf in the sunshine. “It was a great activity that most guests were able to enjoy throughout the day,” he says.
After a feast comprising citrus-cured salmon, roast breast of chicken, passionfruit cheesecake and apple crumble tart, everyone headed outside to sup on Aperol spritzes and strawberry mojitos – the couple’s favourite cocktails – in the late afternoon sun. And, as the sun set over the countryside, rounds of homemade pizza were served, with a toffee apple and clotted cream pizza going down a particular treat!
Kerry and Toby’s first dance kickstarted the party, which included a floor-filling playlist and a magic mirror selfie stand. “One moment that stands out for us was seeing my 90-year-old grandparents dressed up in props and mastering the magic mirror! We loved dancing the night away with our nearest and dearest,” says Toby.
“It was wonderful to share this special day with all our loved ones and see everyone just having a blast!” he continues. “That’s what life is all about; having memories we can cherish for years to come.”
Looking back on the planning process, the couple have plenty of pragmatic advice for others. “Get a wedding planner journal,” recommends Kerry. “Also, have a rough idea in mind for your budget but allow for a bit of a buffer as extra costs will always creep in. Have a think about what your non-negotiables are. We had an Excel spreadsheet to track costs, especially for future payments, allowing us to focus our time on areas of our life outside the wedding planning!”

Monochrome Magic
Brickhouse Vineyard set the stunning scene for Leanne and Guy’s sun-drenched wedding
Meeting via Tinder in 2015, there was no ‘seven-year itch’ for Leanne and Guy, as he surprised Leanne by popping the question seven years later. “Guy booked a special trip to Marbella for my 30th birthday, staying at a hilltop castle, where he proposed,” says Leanne of the special moment. “I couldn’t quite believe it… We had just found out that we were pregnant with baby number two too!”
As soon as the couple set eyes on the rustic-luxe aesthetic of Brickhouse Vineyard, they knew it would be the perfect backdrop for their wedding day. Deciding on a minimal black-and-white colour scheme, Guy and his groomsmen opted for timeless black-tie, while the bridesmaids wore sleek black gowns. The contemporary monochrome styling carried throughout the tablescapes, which were dressed with crisp white linens and chic black candleholders and charger plates.
“We opted for an outdoor wedding,” says Leanne, revealing that the venue’s flowers and scenic spaces really stood out to them. Walking down the al fresco aisle in a textured lace gown that epitomised modern romance, Leanne and Guy took their vows surrounded by arrangements of white flowers and lush foliage.
Relaxed drinks in the sunshine followed, with a live singer and guitarist serenading guests on the terrace. “Having all your friends and family in one place enjoying themselves is just what we envisaged,” says Leanne, of the moment the newlyweds soaked up the happiness of having their loved ones join in their celebrations. “Having both of our children there made it extra special.”
Everyone gathered in the renovated barn for a feast comprising prosciutto-wrapped pork tenderloin with crispy sage and crème fraiche sauce, and chicken breast stuffed with sundried tomato and feta served with various sides. Desserts of boozy trifle, black forest cake bites and Devon scones with cream and jam were complemented by a Colin the Caterpillar cake table.
Leanne and Guy savoured some quiet moments walking around the grounds in the evening sun with their photographer, allowing them to soak up the magic of the day – and the picturesque vineyard setting.
The couple’s first dance had special memories for them. “One of our early dates was to Radio 1’s Big Weekend, where we saw Kygo live and sang our hearts out to Sexual Healing,” remembers Leanne. “We spent ages trying to think of a song that reminded us both of each other but always came back to this song, so it had to be.”
As dancing continued throughout the night, pizzas were served and a live band kept the party spirits high. “I don’t think we have a favourite part; it was all so special,” says Leanne looking back on their once-in-alifetime day.
The newlyweds have some wise words for those who are planning their own weddings. “Accept any offers of help, get people involved and make it fun!” says Leanne. “And book in a date night during the planning, so you can both enjoy that time together amongst the chaos.”

The Great Outdoors
Annabelle and Daniel savoured the natural beauty of Hareston Manor at their summer wedding
Annabelle and Daniel met while studying optometry at Cardiff University. After three years of lectures and labs together, romance blossomed during their final exams in their third year. “By graduation, we had not only our degrees but also each other – with jobs waiting for us back in our home county of Devon,” says Annabelle.
Daniel’s hopes for a romantic sunrise proposal at Torr Head in Northern Ireland were dashed by the weather.
“We seized a five-minute break in the rain, making the moment all the more memorable,” he says. “Overlooking the view of Scotland just 12 miles away, it was a perfectly imperfect setting for such a special moment.”
The search began for a venue and, on discovering Hareston Manor, the couple were enchanted by the idyllic manor house location amidst the rolling hills of the South Hams. The setting inspired their colour scheme of rich rust tones paired with earthy moss green. “We loved how the combination perfectly complemented the natural beauty of the surroundings,” says Annabelle. “As a couple who enjoys spending time outdoors, it felt only right to choose a palette that reflected the natural scenery of Devon, bringing a touch of the outdoors into our day.”
Gorgeous florals carried the palette perfectly, while the tipi was dressed with foliage, bunting, potted plants, stems in glass bottles, natural cheesecloth runners and tapered candles. A semi-naked cake made by a friend and adorned with flowers grown in her garden added a personal and pretty touch, while bridesmaids in rust and moss green satin dresses and groomsmen in natural linen suits completed the rustic picture.
Annabelle and Daniel took their vows al fresco, with the frontage of the 14th century manor house, festooned with flowers, as their backdrop. Celebratory drinks and canapés in the grounds followed before everyone settled in the tipi for the newlyweds’ entrance to Celebration by Kool & the Gang. “It was a moment full of joy and happiness. In all the excitement, Daniel spun me round, forgetting all about the train on my dress!” laughs Annabelle. “His enthusiasm almost sent him flying but, after a quick recovery, the celebrations went on, leaving us with an unforgettable memory.”
Sharing boards of burrata, mozzarella, prosciutto and griddled grapes did the rounds to start, followed by slow-cooked Devon lamb with lemon and rosemary gel, warm flatbreads and sides. Rich chocolate and orange brownie and limoncello, lemon curd and blueberry tiramisu provided the delectable finish. “The shared platters helped create a social atmosphere, perfectly complementing the rustic vibe of the day,” says Daniel. In the evening, a ceilidh band got everyone on their feet for fun-filled antics on the dance floor, while rustic pizzas fuelled the festivities. “It was great to see everyone on the dance floor having a great time,” he says.
“The whole day really did exceed all expectations,” says Annabelle, reflecting on their celebrations. “The feeling of being able to see everyone you love in one place celebrating your love for each other is unmatched and we will truly treasure the memory of this for a lifetime.”
As for advice, she suggests drawing inspiration from weddings you have attended. “Think about what made them memorable. Remember it’s a day to celebrate you, so focus on what will make it uniquely yours as a couple,” she advises. “Also, try to spread out the planning so it doesn’t hit you all at once; this really helped us make it into an enjoyable process and stopped us getting too overwhelmed.”

shades set the scene for Anna and Seb’s dreamlike wedding at Upton Barn
Anna and Seb were both working in retail when they met and fell in love back in 2015. Seven years later, Seb planned a romantic proposal to coincide with Anna’s birthday weekend. “Seb hired a boat in Amsterdam,” she says. “I assumed it was a birthday treat and therefore didn’t see the proposal coming at all! It was a complete surprise!”
Choosing the rustic chic climes of Upton Barn & Walled Garden as the scenic backdrop to their nuptials, the couple chose a soft colour palette, with pastel tones including pale pinks and sage greens.
“We had dreamt of a relaxed outdoor, summer garden wedding and the weather was in our favour,” says Anna, looking back on how their wedding day began. An early afternoon ceremony saw Anna gliding down the lavender-lined aisle of the walled garden in an ethereal lace dress by Made With Love with detachable tulle wings – “I thought it was a bit different to having a detachable veil!” she reflects. Flanked by bridesmaids in light sage green frocks, she complemented her bridal ensemble with a bouquet of seasonal natural flowers in soft shades of pink, cream and white. “I loved my bouquet so much that one of my lovely bridesmaids sent it off to be dried, pressed and framed so can treasure it forever.”
The couple exchanged their self-penned vows beneath the oak arbour, which was beautifully decorated with a broken arch of pastel blooms and foliage, with vistas across the Blackdown Hills beyond. “It was really special being able to make our vows in front of our family and friends,” reminisces Anna.
A drinks reception with giant Jenga in the walled garden followed, allowing the newlyweds and their guests to enjoy the picturesque surroundings in the sunshine. “We also had wedding newspapers, which added a personal touch and our guests enjoyed reading them,” says Anna.
The couple then stole away for a private viewing of the Stable Barn where the reception was to be held. The tables were decorated with clusters of bud vases and candles in soft colours, while drapes suspended from the ceilings added to the natural, dreamy aesthetic. “It looked breathtaking and it was also really lovely to have a bit of time to ourselves!” she says, looking back on one of her favourite moments from the day.
A three-course wedding breakfast of smoked salmon, sharing chicken shawarma and sticky toffee pudding was followed by speeches. Guests were encouraged to take a Polaroid photo of themselves for the couple’s guestbook, adding a visual memento to the well-wishing messages. “It was so lovely looking at everyone’s photos when we read our guestbook,” she reflects.
The dance floor opened to a first dance with a difference, thanks to Seb’s Chilean background. “To honour his roots, we danced to a well-known merengue song, Suavemente by Elvis Crespo,” says Anna. “We are not dancers at all, but we had a lot of fun doing it and everyone was on the dance floor by the end of the song!” The evening continued with “a lot of dancing and late night pizza!” served from a pizza truck.
Looking back on their beautiful garden wedding, Anna has some wise words of advice for other couples. “Remember that this day is for you,” she asserts. “Try not to feel pressured by others or social media and enjoy the planning process.”

Bright and Beautiful
Esme and Ash embraced a colourful and fun-filled vibe for their festivities at Harefield Barn
After connecting on a dating app, Esme and Ash first met at one of his favourite cocktail bars in London. Romance blossomed and, a few years later, Ash planned a special picnic in Greenwich Park. Waiting until sunset, he handed Esme a picture album with photos from their relationship and the last photo was a picture of a ring. “I turned around to look at him and he had pulled out the real thing!” she says.
“We knew we wanted a wedding venue in the South-west because that is where Ash is from and studied there,” she explains. “Not only was Harefield Barn ideally located for guests travelling from abroad, the combination of beauty and simplicity made it feel immediately welcoming and relaxing. The owner, Deborah, was also fantastic at helping us work out how we could bring out as much of ourselves in the day as possible.”
Settling on a brief of “bold, bright and fun”, the couple used orange as a starting point for their colour scheme, complemented by punchy pink and sunset yellow. “We wanted to ensure the bridesmaids and grooms people felt comfortable and joyful,” explains Esme, allowing the wedding party to wear the outfits of their choice in these shades. Flowers in the brightest shades of yellow, pink and orange carried the vibrant aesthetic throughout the celebration spaces, while the linens and stationery added further colour to the tabletops.
As the couple had legally married two days prior, they had full creative control over their al fresco ceremony, shaping it to reflect their personalities. Esme’s mum Anna acted as the celebrant, overseeing their handwritten vow exchange beneath the September sun.
The drinks reception was followed by a wedding breakfast comprising stuffed vine tomato with local crab and oak-smoked salmon, buttered breast of chicken with confit leg wrapped in pancetta with butternut purée, and Esme’s favourite for dessert: sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and whisky ice cream.
The evening guests arrived during cocktail hour. “Splitting the speeches across dinner and the evening meant we were able to share some special moments with the evening guests too, which we were grateful for,” explains Esme. Guests had another treat in store in the form of a choreographed first dance to Kygo and Sigrid’s The Feeling. “The lyrics were pertinent and the music fun, but we also chose it because Ash’s first present to me was tickets to a Sigrid concert, and the concert itself was a special memory,” she says.
“Esme is half-Spanish and we wanted to find a way to make sure our day reflected this somehow,” explains Ash. “We opted for bringing our DJ, Sergio Yanes, over from Spain. He was a huge hit and we could not have asked for a better dance party!”
A showstopping fireworks display drew the celebrations to a close – a moment both Esme and Ash cite as a standout memory. “The fireworks were spectacular, far beyond our wildest dreams and timed perfectly to Axwell & Ingrosso’s More Than You Know,” she reflects.
Their top tip for engaged couples is simple. “Hire a planner!” she says. “The second the wonderful Francesca from Promise Weddings came into our lives, everything became so much more enjoyable, and especially the day itself. She guided us to the most viable and beautiful solutions at every stage.”

I Found You
Autumnal hues and ocean seascapes added to the magic of Amie and Jack’s wedding at Gara Rock
Amie and Jack met through their mutual friends Hannah and Ben eight years ago. “We had the pleasure of being a groomsman and bridesmaid for them at their wedding earlier this year and then they repaid the favour!” says Amie. New Zealand set the spectacular scene for their engagement, with Jack getting down on one knee at a beach at the bottom of Mount Maunganui. “It was incredibly special – however you can’t say you got engaged on a mountain if you didn’t go up it, so we then had to go climb it!” she laughs.
Having initially considered marrying overseas, when the couple came across Gara Rock it was love at first sight. “It was the only venue we looked at; we loved the secluded hotel and beach, the décor and the incredible food!” she says. “We couldn’t stop thinking about it and booked it a few days later knowing our spaniels, Millie and Jasper, could join us!”
The couple opted for exclusive use of the hotel for the weekend, meaning they could start the festivities with dinner and drinks on the Friday evening before Amie and her friends gathered at the on-site cinema to watch Bridesmaids in their pyjamas. “It was a brilliant way to spend the night before the wedding!” she says. “The wedding day goes so fast, so it was lovely to have the Friday evening catching up with some of our guests.”
Their late September wedding date inspired a palette of warm autumnal shades – incorporating lots of orange, which is Amie’s favourite colour – while the stationery nodded to the coastal location. The combination of wooden tables, glorious florals and gold candlesticks and table name frames made for stunning tablescapes.
Flanked by bridesmaids in burnt orange dresses, Amie donned a minimalist, off-the-shoulder gown for the ceremony, when the couple exchanged their own vows before the South Devon seascape. “My childhood friend, Emmalene, read a poem by one of our favourite authors, Elizabeth Day, called Love is Not a Grenade,” she says. “And Jack’s friend, Ben, read a poem called The Giraffe and the Monkey by Daniel Thompson.”
Moving to the terrace for drinks served alongside ocean views, the newlyweds took some quiet moments to themselves to enjoy champagne and a sneak peek of the table set-up. “We wanted to do something personal for the place settings and decided on Polaroid photos for each guest,” says Jack. “It was lovely seeing everyone remembering when each was taken; it was also a good conversation starter!”
A feast including wild mushroom risotto, garlic-roasted Creedy Carver chicken breast served with various delicious sides and clotted cream crème brûlée with lemon Gara Rock shortbread went down an absolute treat.
As night fell, everyone gathered outside for a sparkler tunnel before Amie and Jack opened the dance floor to I Found You by Alabama Shakes performed by live band Sunny Roots. “It was so nice seeing out the night on the dance floor with our family and best friends dancing to our favourite songs,” says Jack.
Reflecting on their “amazing” day, Amie offers advice for brides and grooms-to-be. “Give yourself plenty of time and chip away at tasks as and when you can,” she recommends. “We were lucky to have Gara Rock’s wedding planner, Simone, to help us with the organisation but if you don’t have a planner, you can find lots of helpful checklists and templates online to help ensure you are considering everything!”

True Romance
Rockbeare
Manor set the stunning scene for Lucy and Donovan’s chic, contemporary celebration
Lucy and Donovan first set eyes on each other during a night out in Plymouth. “Lucy walked into me with a handful of drinks, which spilt everywhere,” he recalls. “I somehow had a folded napkin in my pocket, which I whipped out, and she responded with ‘I’m sold’. We then exchanged numbers; Lucy saved mine as ‘husband’ and I saved hers as ‘wifey’.”
Unbeknownst to Lucy, their surprise engagement was a pre-planned and very public affair. “I run the Plymouth half marathon every year,” explains Donovan. “In secret, I organised 30 of our nearest and dearest ‘to support and watch me finish the race’ but they were actually there to watch me propose to Lucy at the end!” Posing en masse for a photo with a friend holding up a ‘Will you marry me?’ sign, Donovan asked Lucy to check the picture whilst dropping to one knee.
Plans began in earnest for their wedding at Rockbeare Manor, which took a classic colour scheme of champagne and brown. The sumptuous palette was carried in everything from the groom’s taupe and groomsmen’s coffee brown suits to the bridesmaids’ beautiful light biscuit-hued gowns. Lucy teamed her striking white gown with a bouquet of crisp white roses, while posies of white blooms in dainty glass vases and contemporary stationery created a modern romantic aesthetic for the celebrations.
The intimate ceremony featured the couple’s own vows, which Donovan says “made everything much more personal and special” and recommends taking the time and effort to write them “preferably by yourself, somewhere relaxed so you can say what you feel”. Making her big entrance proved to be Lucy’s standout moment of the day. “Walking down the aisle and seeing my husband-to-be with tears in his eyes was definitely my favourite moment,” she reminisces.
Post-ceremony drinks and photos amongst Rockbeare Manor’s stunning country house frontage and grounds were followed by the wedding breakfast in the ballroom overlooking acres of pristine parkland.
“We didn’t want a traditional sit-down three-course meal,” Donovan explains of the sharing platter feast they arranged for guests. “We wanted a more laidback family-style meal, where you can help yourself. With Caribbean heritage in my blood, wanted to pay homage to that. So we had jerk chicken, rice and peas followed by dumplings in the evening.”
Don recommends considering the layout, as well as the flavour and meaning, of your wedding breakfast. “Have a sweetheart table, no top table,” he says. “This is the one time you can sit down and have your first meal as bride and groom and take it all in.” In fact, so momentous was their meal, that Donovan cites their entrance as his favourite memory of their wedding. “When we walked into the wedding breakfast hand-inhand hearing ‘Please be upstanding for the new Mr and Mrs Spencer’, it felt so surreal, but so right,” he says.
An evening of drinking, dancing and more feasting completed Lucy and Donovan’s dream-filled day, which they reflect upon to dispense their top planning tips to other couples in the throes of planning.
“Do not prioritise anything over your photographer and videographer. When the dust settles that’s all you will have left of one of the best days of your life!” implores Donovan. “And a bonus tip!” he adds. “Date! Have a social life, too. Don’t let wedding planning consume you too much!”

Heaven in Devon
Charlie and Matt’s summer wedding at The Great Barn was awash with personal touches
When Charlie and Matt set eyes on each other during a night out in Brixton in 2016 they both knew they’d found something special. “Matt proposed halfway round a six-hour hike in the Lake District,” says Charlie. “It was perfect; no one else was around, just us and our puppy. Then he surprised me further by bringing out a whole bottle of gin, tonic and ice for a celebratory drink!”
Inspired by the wild Devonshire countryside where Charlie grew up, the couple chose a fresh palette of green and white for their wedding in the romantic rural setting of The Great Barn. “The venue was brilliant as we could have it for the full weekend and rent out the on-site cottages and houses,” says Matt. Kicking off the celebrations with a Friday evening dinner with their parents, bridesmaids and ushers gave the nearlyweds “a lovely chance to mingle and to hear additional speeches from the maid of honour and father of the groom”.
The next day, everyone gathered in Charlie’s childhood village of Dunchideock for the church ceremony.
“The church looked beautiful and it was special to get married there. Seeing each other down the aisle and saying our vows together was one of the best parts of the day for us,” Charlie reflects. After the ceremony, the couple spilled out into the sunshine to a shower of confetti where a white taxi was waiting – a nod to London where the couple met and now live.
The taxi wove its way along the leafy lanes to The Great Barn where they joined guests for G&Ts in the gardens. Settling at tables in the spectacular barn, everyone tucked into a sharing feast of Devon dry-aged beef rump, braised beef shin, baked salmon and a series of sides with a dessert trio providing the sweet endnote.
As well as gorgeous arrangements of white florals and foliage, the tables were decorated with bottles of damson gin made by Matt’s parents, and amusing table names. “We named the tables after items our pet puppy had eaten or destroyed – so people were sat at tables named Knickers, Toothbrush, Slippers, Socks and Wine Glass – but we didn’t tell anyone the meaning until my speech!” laughs Matt.
Post-dinner, the celebrations moved outside as guests gathered around a firepit and photo booth in the evening sun before an evening of live music began. “Neither of us like dancing and decided very late on that we were going to do a first dance,” says Charlie. “We were so glad that we did it. We were filled with so much joy and excitement of being married that we completely forgot our dislike of dancing and it was such a lovely moment to have together.”
A live set by The Zoots and stone-fired pizza kept guests partying until midnight. The next day, they gathered in the garden for a barbecue and lawn games, giving everyone the chance to reflect on a wonderful weekend of festivities. “It was lovely to get more time to see all our guests and hear stories from the night before,” reflects Matt.
The couple’s top tip for busily planning couples is to set some time aside for yourselves, just the two of you, in the week running up to the wedding and on the day itself. “This really helped us relax, forget all the details of planning and enjoy the day,” he says.

Set aside a seat or small table with a floral arrangement dedicated to your absent loved ones, with perhaps a candle lit in their memory or a cherished object of theirs placed on the table.
It’s an intimate touch that’s simple, yet deeply meaningful, allowing their presence to be felt without a formal ceremony. Hazel
4 Love note
If you have any notes or little personal messages from your loved one, string them up as poignant
bunting or on a cork-board as a special feature.
If you have lovely notes from any texts or emails they’d sent you, write these out by hand and add them to the board of love. Jess
5 Dancing queen
Music has a way of bringing memories flooding back, so incorporate a song into your first dance that reminds you of a loved one. You could even include a small note in your program explaining why you’ve chosen that song, which will make the first dance moment feel even more special. Hazel
6 A toast to their memory
Before you dive into your wedding feast, raise a glass to the loved ones who can’t be there physically but are always in your hearts. You could also create a signature drink or a favourite cocktail of theirs for everyone to enjoy during the toasts. Hazel
7 Personal charm
Whether it’s a locket with a photo, a small embroidered symbol in your wedding dress or suit, or a lucky charm that belonged to a loved one, having a piece of them physically close to you on your wedding day is a beautifully intimate gesture. Every time you touch that little charm, you’ll know they’re right there with you in spirit. Hazel
8 Speaking of loved ones
There is nothing more meaningful to acknowledge absent loved ones than by mentioning them in a speech, made by someone who was close to them and can really bring their special character to life. Jess
9 Honouring with heirlooms
Incorporating a piece of your loved one’s jewellery into your bridal ensemble is a meaningful way to honour them, allowing their presence to accompany you throughout the day, serving as a special tribute. Jess
10 Song of praise
Honour absent family and friends by playing their favourite songs, whether as a meaningful part of the ceremony or a subtle tribute woven into your evening playlist. Jess
