DEVON’S DREAMIEST WEDDING INSPIRATION

This issue marks the 15th anniversary of the Devon edition of Wed Magazine. Over 60 issues, we’ve revelled in the joy of inspiring engaged couples with the beauty of this extraordinary county and the talent of its wedding industry. I vividly remember the anticipation of launching our first issue - of crisscrossing Devon, from north coast to south, from the tors of Dartmoor to the heights of Exmoor, and visiting venues, attending wedding shows, coordinating photo shoots and meeting so many brilliant suppliers. What an incredible journey it has been. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be here – 15 years, 60 issues and more than 9,000 pages of wedding inspiration later – still doing what we love and being part of your journey through one of life’s most special chapters. Thank you to our wonderful readers and wedding industry friends for your support and being a crucial part of Wed’s story.

IT’S A CELEB RATION!

SWEET AND

SIMPLE

A Georgian stately home on the outskirts of Bideford and just a short drive from the breathtaking north coast, Moreton House offers elegance and romance in abundance. With its range of impressive yet homely spaces and luxurious on-site accommodation, the venue is most often associated with weekend-long and exclusive use weddings for up to 100 guests – but the launch of an exciting new package offers a budget-friendly option for couples envisioning a smaller celebration in this stellar spot.

The KISS (Keep It Sweet and Simple) package includes day hire starting from under £1,000 for weekdays and £1,200 for weekends for elopements or intimate celebrations of up to 40 people. Ceremonies may take place beneath the columned portico or in the panelled entrance hall, which seats up to 38 guests, before drinks, canapés and the formal stately home backdrop for photographs. For those seeking something more laid-back, the secret garden offers a more bohemian, back-to-nature setting for ceremonies where a gazebo and fire circle is hidden within an ancient rhododendron stand.

“This package allows you to achieve the big fancy wedding look without the price tag, then continue your celebrations elsewhere at your favourite party spot, whether that’s your local pub, favourite restaurant or local village hall,” explains owner, Helen Phillips. “If you want to go large for the evening, we have collaborated with our neighbours at The Big Sheep to offer their theme park facilities for a festival style evening party for up to 300 guests.” From Regency romance to boho vibes, this brilliantly versatile venue offers a beautiful setting to live out your wedding dreams.

WONDER ON THE WATER’S EDGE

Picture this: a Napoleonic Fort sitting on a Cornish clifftop, rolling lawns and wildflowerfilled gardens slipping down to the sea and a private beach for loved up wanders at the water’s edge. Nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Rame Peninsula with soul-stirring sea views, Polhawn Fort really is the stuff of dreams – and the venue has recently undergone a revamp in the form of a new brand identity and upgraded interiors.

The fort’s reimagined identity is inspired by the venue’s location to capture “a sense of peaceful, untouched nature, reflecting the tranquillity and timeless beauty of the natural world”. The refreshed interiors echo the natural elegance and organic charm of this aesthetic, with new furniture, linen, lighting, soft furnishings and artwork throughout. The palette complements the soft, natural tones of the brand to enhance the warm welcome given by owners, the Wicksteed family, who run the venue alongside their long-standing team of dedicated employees.

In addition, there’s a new website that beautifully showcases the venue whilst effortlessly guiding users through the fort’s various offerings, including further information on the spaces and accommodation options. A Wedding Guide hosts a selection of downloadable information packs from sleeping arrangements and recommended suppliers to table layouts and a timing guide, while a newly designed digital brochure provides all the key information in one easy-to-read document.

A palpably magical venue for a winter wedding, Polhawn Fort currently has a few remaining 2024 dates available at a fantastic price. With its own microclimate, the bay provides mesmerising sea views and romantic sunsets year-round which – together with the ambience of a roaring fire and inviting interiors – will ensure an unforgettable affair indeed.

Styled with blousy blooms and elegant details, Pynes House makes a spellbinding setting for a modern fairytale romance

photography Ivyhouse Photography styling Room for Bloom Events

On location at Pynes House, this wow-factor shoot adopts a classic English country wedding theme with a stunning Italian summer twist. “We wanted it to feel super romantic, elegant, warm and soulful,” explains Jade Cockerill of Ivyhouse Photography, who captured the editorial.

The dreamlike aesthetic is used to tell the story of the love-struck couple, who escape to Pynes House for a romantic weekend away together ahead of the groom’s spontaneous, starry-eyed proposal.

Soft pastel shades set the scene of elegance and are carried in everything from the floristry and stationery to the tablescapes and bridalwear. The ceremony space is bursting with natural light, blousy blooms adorning the arch and carried by the bride who wears a gorgeous off-the-shoulder puff-sleeve corset gown embellished with a beautiful botanical print. The cake is a vision of decadence: a textured four-tiered ‘living’ creation crowned by a cluster of fresh apricot roses reminiscent of an oil painting.

In the stately reception room, delicate white china sits atop silken peach napkins framed by gold flatware and crystal glassware, while centrepieces of miniature posies are flanked by tall tapered glass candleholders. The period features of Pynes House extend the timelessly chic feel through ornate mirrors, eye-catching chandeliers, antique furniture and the statement marble staircase – the perfect place for the couple to pose for breathtaking bloom-filled photos.

Outside, a champagne tower pre-empts the party mood, allowing the couple a private al fresco toast in front of the house, ahead of the group celebrations. His debonair tux is perfectly on-trend yet timeless, while her dress change into a short, tiered frock makes for a fun and flamboyant dance-ready confection. The couple transition from day to night, from betrothed to newlyweds.

Blooms bursting with colour and seriously chic bridal wear set the scene for a dream summer soirée at Gara Rock on Devon’s south coast

photography Clare Kinchin Photography coordination Something Borrowed Weddings

styling Borrow The Moon

Perched on the clifftops of the south coast, where the lush countryside tumbles down to golden sands and Atlantic breakers, Gara Rock looks out across sweeping ocean panoramas. But the sublime location isn’t the only draw of this coastal wedding venue. There’s also a spa, heated pools, a restaurant and luxurious suites with views out to sea. It makes an irresistibly romantic setting for a wedding – and this styled shoot showcases the beauty of a summer wedding at this ocean’s edge retreat.

Seasonal blooms are the starting point for the styling. Vibrant clusters of peonies, roses, sweet peas and Canterbury bells pop against the backdrop of blue, creating a striking setting for the ceremony. Tying in beautifully with the petal-pretty cake and stationery, stems in cut glass vases bring colour to the tablescape, while seagrass placemats and linens echoing the shades of the white-tipped ocean enhance the laidback aesthetic.

The bridal wear, meanwhile, makes a statement of its own, while complementing the relaxed romance of the scene. From the eye-catchingly colourful Rue de Seine gown with its stunning floral embroidery, to the fluid simplicity of the high-necked Grace Loves Lace dress, these dreamy designs will ensure all eyes are on the bride – and, of course, the captivating views from this chic coastal setting.

Glamorous gown dripping in beads for a modern fairytale wedding? Floaty tulle dress for an ethereal garden or beachside affair? Or uber-cool lace top and trousers combo for partying all night long? Plymouth’s luxe bridal boutique The Ivory Lounge has welcomed some stylish new arrivals – and there’s a gown for every bride, whatever your personal style or W-day vibe.

Élysée Bridal is causing a particular stir with brides seeking standout aisle style. The Californian label crafts modern romantic gowns which exude timeless beauty, combining intricate lace, dramatic trains and dazzling details. Faith is a stellar example, with its shimmering floral embroidered lace, beaded floral appliqués and tulle corset back, while Fia epitomises contemporary sophistication with its deep V-neckline bodice, 3D floral lace and draped Mikado skirt with a high slit.

Also loved by brides for their contemporary take on classic design, the new collection by British label Ellis Bridals is scoring serious style points. With its minimalist cut and sweetheart neckline, Reanna is the epitome of modern sophistication and we love Piper’s draped bodice and showstopping silhouette which can be adapted into a party-ready mini for the evening festivities.

London-based brand Kelsey Rose is a winner for brides seeking cool-girl style, from boho luxe to city chic separates. For whimsical brides, Eliana is a dreamily romantic confection of floral lace and pleated tulle while Winnie is all about soft elegance with its delicate off the shoulder tulle straps, soft plunge neckline and billowing skirt. Those seeking a statement will love the Faith jacket and Ariel top, which both pair perfectly with trousers or a mini for a coolly contemporary look.

Your bridesmaids won’t be left out thanks to a collection of multi-way dresses in a range of shades also available at the boutique, as well as veils, headpieces and jewellery for those allimportant finishing touches. theivorylounge.co.uk

From glamorous ballgowns in exquisite satin to figure-sculpting fishtails and exquisite sheaths, expect dazzling details including deep plunge V-necks, floral lace, intricate beading and jewel-encrusted bodices. The only hitch will be narrowing it down to just one.

Designers’ enduring love affair with minimalism finds fabulous form in Maui by Maggie Sottero. The deep square back, illusion side panels, square neckline and divine stretch crepe fabric scream couture. If your bridal style is more easy-breezy, then Catherine by Rebecca Ingram, with its light glitter tulle skirt, floral bodice and deep illusion plunge, is an effortlessly romantic choice. Then there’s Bridget by Maggie Sottero – a head-turning vision of romance with its floral lace, sparkle tulle and strapless deep illusion sweetheart neckline. pirouettethecollection.com

DOUBLE THE FUN DOUBLE THE FUN

Struggling to whittle down the dress to just one? Embrace the trend of multiple looks or convertible bridalwear

words Hannah May

Ellis Bridals, The Ivory Lounge

Whether you want to refresh your ensemble for the evening reception, swap attire after the vows or opt for three separate looks for the ceremony, wedding breakfast, and after-party, it’s easier than ever to explore different bridalwear options come the wedding day.

From layering and accessorising to two-look frocks and complete dress changes, brides are expressing their individual style with a personalised approach to their wedding wardrobe. We look at the ways to achieve a multi-look wedding, along with the latest lust-have bridal collections to choose from...

Two-in-one gowns

Modern collections are creatively merging aesthetics to present gowns that fall into more than one style genre, allowing brides to nod to two or more eras, trends and fashions. For example, think vintage silk slips with deep plunging necklines, floral print ballgowns, strapless satin A-lines with detachable puff sleeves, minimalist columns with side cut-outs and fitted off-the-shoulder frocks with XXL back bows. Modernise a classic with a column featuring intricate beadwork, or a scooped bodice atop a dramatic ruffled skirt – or lend a seductive edge to a boho lace gown with matching sleeves and a sculpted boned bodice.

Bridal separates are another brilliant way to flaunt two-looks-in-one, allowing you to curate an ensemble that’s also utterly ‘you’ – and primed for a dress change later in the day. Think pearl toppers, silk bralettes, botanical lace tops, satin trousers, bridal capes, taffeta skirts, backless bodysuits and feather jackets. Pair a corset bodice with crepe pants or a crop top with a chiffon skirt. Whether built into the dress design, achieved by layering pieces or customisable via the details (such as belts, bows, corsages, capes, tops, shoulder streamers), two-look gowns are just the ticket for brides seeking something ‘more’.

Total change

To achieve the ultimate in multiple bridal looks, schedule a complete outfit change. You’ll have to consider your budget, along with the fact that you’ll be dipping out of the celebrations, but a quick dress change with minimal disruption can allow you to totally transform your look.

Most brides who choose to do so tend to gravitate toward a more traditional look for the ceremony, such as with a classic ballgown, fit-andflare or A-line, with the dress change largely depending on the venue and theme of your wedding. For example, a garden party ceremony might call for a botanical lace gown followed by a colourful print dress, blush-coloured skirt or 3D rosebud bodice and micro mini. Meanwhile, a boho-styled beach shindig is the perfect opportunity to reveal a body-hugging, plunging lace gown beneath a tulle topper and matching sleeves.

Convertible bridalwear

Otherwise known as transitional gowns, any outfit that can be instantly adapted is part of the convertible trend. For the most part, this involves detachable elements, such as underskirts and overskirts, sleeves, trains, straps, veils, overlays and toppers. Add sheer bishop or spotted tulle sleeves, a Chantilly lace or tiered tulle skirt, sequin studded jacket, beaded bodysuit, diaphanous floral crop top or detachable off-the-shoulder tulle sleeves. Alternatively, pick a playsuit and layer with a frothy overskirt, throw a sweeping cape over a mini dress, or attach a flowing tulle train or cascading sleeves to your dress for a modern-romantic finish.

Party-ready wear

You might start with your party look and layer over the top to create your ceremony style – adding or removing items as the day progresses to reveal a new feature or appearance. Or you may choose to switch to something more dance floor-ready post-ceremony. It’s important to consider how your ensemble will evolve to allow you to maximise every section of your day; this might simply mean donning more comfortable footwear, ditching your bridal jacket or peeling away the train and veil.

You might want to surprise your beau with a classy ‘striptease’ during your first dance by pirouetting out of your overskirt or whipping off your top; or you may nip out after the golden hour photo shoot and change into a sequin mini dress. Otherwise, it’s all about the details that the party space and scene will capture to full effect. Consider everything from micro and short skirts to jumpsuits, colourful frocks and form-fitting or body-con silhouettes including mermaids, fitand-flares and slips. Then there’s embellishments like metallic accents, Art Deco beadwork, and glitterball-esque features such as mirror embellishments and jumbo paillette sequins.

Accessorise and personalise

If you can’t be doing with the faff of a dress change or substantial alterations midway through proceedings, focus on the minutiae instead. A look can be totally transformed via the details, which is where a carefully selected accessory or two can help you to create multiple looks-in-one.

Think floral crowns and elaborate headwear, jaw-dropping footwear, detachable tulle streamers, bespoke or statement jewellery, billowing shoulder bows and veils (especially short and embroidered, long and lace fringed, or scallop edged), long pearl-encrusted sheer bridal gloves and the accessory du jour: capes. The runways are awash with a variety of styles, most notably sheer organza capes with appliqués, puff sleeves in canopy taffeta and detachable watteau (attached at the shoulders or back of the dress) chiffon capes. Select an item from bodices and veils to trains and overskirts, including handstitched accents such as floral detailing on straps, bodice and skirt, metallic thread-work, glittery accents, and celestial and botanical embroideries.

HANDMADE AND HEARTFELT

Designer-maker Corrinne Eira Evans’ ‘Make Your Own Wedding Rings’ workshops are ideal for couples keen to create their very own, one-of-a-kind pieces to wear and treasure a lifetime. Not only will you be building your own rings (and lives) together, but you’ll also be making precious memories of this pre-wedding chapter in the process.

Workshops take place in the fully equipped workshop at Moon & Moor in Okehampton’s Victorian Arcade on Dartmoor. Handcrafting all her jewellery –including the metals used in her workshops – from recycled and single mine origin silver and gold, Corrinne will provide both the materials and professional guidance throughout the day, with no prior experience necessary. Alternatively, if you have your own heirloom jewellery that you’d like melted and reformed into something new, let her know before booking.

“I have over 16 years of experience in the jewellery trade, so you will be in good hands,” says Corrinne, who is exhibiting at the prestigious Goldsmiths’ Fair. “I’ve had the pleasure of hosting this workshop for over nine years and seen many lovely couples create their very own rings; it really is such a special day,” she enthuses. The day runs from 10:30am-3/4pm and is for just one couple, so you’ll get Corrinne’s undivided attention. You’ll first make a sample in silver (included in the workshop cost) before making your precious real rings in either 9ct or 18ct yellow, white or rose gold, 22ct yellow, palladium or platinum (at an additional cost).

Corrinne is currently offering Wed readers a 15% discount on these workshops by using the code ‘WED15’ at the checkout when booking online or in the gallery.

STANDOUT STYLE

Endlessly inspired by her Devon home, Erin Cox’s ever-expanding collection is replete with beautifully eye-catching jewellery. Whether you’re seeking standout wedding rings, something special for your mums or bridesmaids or a finishing flourish for your bridal outfit – you’ll find pieces to covet a lifetime. Think statement white baroque pearl necklaces, yellow gold circle stud earrings, hammered chain bracelets and ruby studs.

The Bubble Collection presents a striking selection of pieces, which began with a moment of inspiration while Erin was under the water in Borneo “watching the bubbles of air dancing in the water”. The result is a unique aesthetic that blends her organic shapes and textures with molten bubbles in an array of designs. The molten bubble necklace featuring a blue pear-cut diamond, the chandelier bubble earrings and the diamond bubble stud earrings would all make luxe touches for a bridal gown – and heirloom pieces to hand down the generations. Get in touch or pop into her Topsham studio to discover these and more of Erin’s exquisite creations.

SIGNET OF THE TIMES

Renowned for creating distinctive contemporary jewellery to treasure, west Cornwall-based designer-maker Justin Duance has unveiled a new collection of wood and sandcast signet rings. Each ring combines Justin’s signature techniques of casting precious metal in sand and inlaying with a solid piece of hardwood to create a palpable and personalised piece to treasure.

Unisex and made-to-order in a range of metals including recycled silver and gold, examples from the collection include a silver ring cast in sand from the cove of Gunwalloe and inlaid with whiskey barrel oak, and a recycled 9ct yellow gold band cast in sand from Newlyn and inlaid with oak from a 1905 lugger boat.

The rugged nature of the design alludes to the ancient origins of signet rings, which have been around since 3500BC and would be unique to each person. “We were inspired by the idea of a ring that’s impossible to replicate exactly, jewellery that is incredibly personal to the individual, once seen as an extension of one’s self,” explains the team. “By casting each ring in beach sand, no two are the same. The beach sand not only creates the texture you see on the ring, but tiny grains are captured in the gold too. By choosing the sand your ring is cast in, you can carry a piece of your favourite place with you everywhere you go. The wood inlay replaces classic coats of arms and –as with the sand – you are encouraged to choose a wood that holds meaning to you.”

CIRCLEOF LIFE

Choosing where your wedding rings will come from is the first step in selecting jewellery that will be with you for life

words Hannah May

Safrina Smith Photography

If you’re armed with an idea from the outset on how to source your wedding rings, you could save yourselves a great deal of time, money and effort for a stress-free and successful ring-buying process. For example, do you want to repurpose your grandmother’s wedding ring or find a themed design? You might prefer to let your instincts guide you and wait to be bowled over by something that speaks to you while you’re out shopping.

Many couples will go to their favourite designer-maker to purchase ready-towear pieces, recycle heirloom jewellery or commission bands to be made or personalised to individual spec. For others, it’ll simply be a case of searching for something that fits your budget or style.

Either way, your rings’ origin story can help ensure an easy and enjoyable buying journey, allowing you to find or create something from a place of meaning and love. Here’s our guide to the main ways of sourcing wedding rings to help you get started…

Vintage or heirloom

Pre-loved pieces of jewellery can uniquely define the look, feel and significance of your rings. Whether you already have a selection of old items that you’d like remodelled into your rings, are in possession of sentimental gold that could be melted and reformed or require an heirloom band to be resized or set with a stone, sourcing from within your own pre-existing collections is a smart place to start.

Alternatively, you might simply wish to buy something already in existence, by visiting antique jewellers, attending auctions or scouring various vintage marketplaces, which will provide you with an instant one-off purchase that’s eco-friendly to boot. Wear it in its original form, have it reworked into a style that better suits or add a personalisation such as an engraving for additional you-ness.

Buy or commission

If you have an idea concerning the style you’re seeking, then sourcing should be relatively easy. Whether that means booking an appointment to view your favourite jewellers’ collections or keeping an eye out for a classic gold band, an image of the type of rings you’d like will guide you toward buying or commissioning a kind that works for you.

If you’re being led by budget, tell your jeweller what it is, as they often host archive, experimental and end-of-line sales, seconds promotions and ready-to-wear collections that are a fraction of the price of commissioned or ‘perfect’ pieces. You might also be surprised at how cost-effective commissions can be, and many designers can work within most budgets, however limited – so always enquire.

If you don’t have much of a restriction on cost, then explore all the options for buying and commissioning in keeping with your original vision or requirements –unless you find that these change throughout the ring-shopping experience. Just keep an open mind and trust the experts while doing so.

Make your own or co-design

Many designer-makers offer the chance for couples to create or co-design their rings from scratch, meaning that they’ll match your exact requirements and will be a bona fide one-of-a-kind.

In doing so, you might also ask yourself where each individual element comes from to check it fits with your criteria and ethos; for example, are the diamonds Fairtrade or lab-grown, and is the precious metal recycled? You might also want to incorporate materials and methods that are particular or personal to you, such as wood and gemstones, lost wax and sand-casting.

Then there’s the practical matter of a ring’s design, which includes the shape, fit, finish, width, metal, profile and pairing – along with how it adheres to your budget and lifestyle. Making or designing your own bands allows greater scope for personalisation because you’re hand-picking every aspect from the metal to the final flourishes (think inscriptions, fingerprints, drawings, secret stones...). The result will be a set of rings as breathtakingly unique as your love.

a question of style

Pair your own preferences with a jeweller’s signature style for a wedding ring match made in heaven...

ERIN COX JEWELLERY: THE MOLTEN STYLE INSPIRED BY DEVON

The spirit of Devon is palpable in Erin Cox’s work. “Erin’s signature molten style beautifully captures the untamed essence of Devon’s landscapes, drawing inspiration from meandering rivers and babbling brooks to the rolling hills and rugged tors of Dartmoor,” explains Jasmine Bowden. “Each piece is meticulously crafted, featuring flowing textures and dynamic forms that echo the natural world. Created in her Devon workshop, Erin’s designs pay homage to her home, with each piece as unique and captivating as the landscape that inspires it.” erincox.co.uk

JUSTIN DUANCE: A DEEP CONNECTION TO NATURE AND NATURAL FORMS

Based in deepest West Cornwall, Justin Duance is endlessly inspired by the wild beauty of his surroundings. “Justin’s signature style is characterised by a connection to nature – in his jewellery design, but also in the techniques he uses, which draw directly from our natural surroundings,” explains Jamila Hirtenstein. “While his designs are varied, spanning from pieces inlaid with hardwoods to rings reminiscent of our rocky cliffs, it’s his sandcast rings that are most popular with brides and grooms. The sandcast rings are made by casting precious metals into beach sand; the sand not only creates a unique texture on each ring, but tiny grains are captured in the gold. As a way of personalising your ring, you’re invited to choose sand from a place that holds special meaning to you for your ring to be cast in. These unique and organic bands can then be further embellished with diamonds and gemstones (all ethically sourced), from subtle vintage diamonds set into the texture as if they have grown in place to twists on classic solitaire and eternity rings. Justin’s sandcast rings have a contemporary yet timeless feel that makes them a brilliant choice for a wedding ring.” justind.co.uk

Our beautiful collection is not limited to traditional styles as we embrace fashions and our signature style is very much led by what our customers are looking for. It’s difficult to choose a favourite style when you get to work in a store filled with so many stunning rings; it just makes our day to witness the moment a couple find the rings to mark the commitment they are going to make to one another. CORRINNE EIRA EVANS: SCULPTURAL STYLES

INSPIRED BY THE LANDSCAPE

Corrinne Eira Evans’ gallery is nestled right on the edge of Dartmoor – and she counts the untamed beauty of the landscape as the muse for her signature chainmail jewellery. “Individual links are soldered together in a fabric of metal, simultaneously intricate and sculptural. Every chain link piece has an irresistible sense of tactility and motion, moving fluidly on and with your body,” says Corrinne. “I’m inspired by Dartmoor, by the ever-changing, mystical landscape that surrounds me. My work holds echoes of the world I see: shadows, dappled light, wild grasses and shifting skies. Since childhood, I have found a home for my creative spirit in the moorlands. Fuelling and feeding my creativity, these landscapes become mirrored in my jewellery. On the body, you can feel the soulful connection between designer and inspiration come to life. Carefully chosen materials and finishes reflect my natural inspiration. Irregular, faceted gemstones tell a story of rugged topography. Central to my work is enduring quality and heritage craft. Handcrafted in Devon, my contemporary designs are brought to life with artisanal techniques and exacting attention to detail.” corrinneeiraevans.com

SUIT YOURSELF

Whatever your W-day vibe, the latest grooms wear collections have an option to suit. We’ve picked out three of the leading looks to make your own

MODERN

Grooms with a penchant for ultra-modern style are currently spoilt for choice, with the latest collections ranging from bright and bold to brilliantly bespoke. Colour is a key trend, with various shades of blue, green, yellow, orange, red and purple all splashed across the runways. Tone it down with washed-out pastel or earthy hues or spruce it up with statement jewel shades. Block out your entire ensemble with one eye-catching hue, or incorporate some colour with a feature or two, such as the jacket or shirt, tie and pocket square. Meanwhile, shirt and tie colour-matching is an emerging trend for grooms seeking easy modern style.

Custom-made outfits are most definitely de rigueur, with every detail from the lapel to the jacket lining, material and monogram individually picked and made to order. Opt for a personalised element or design a tailored, made-to-measure look from scratch for the ultimate in à la mode grooms wear.

Pattern is another way to contemporise your outfit, with florals, stripes, animal-inspired motifs, checks, polka dots, tweed and herringbone all making sartorial waves, while varying texture is another must-have element. From cord and flannel to velvet, linen, wool, seersucker and silk – dimensional, feel-me fabrics are the hallmark of many of today’s standout collections.

TIMELESS

Whether you choose a classic suit, source something vintage, reimagine your favourite era wear or opt for a layering of age-proof elements, designing your outfit around a timeless aesthetic is a versatile, unique and tasteful approach to your wedding wardrobe.

The tux is the timelessly chic choice du jour and an outfit that’s easy to curate to boot. Simply select – then individually style – your dream black suit and hone in on the minutiae such as fit (slim, tailored), lapel (notch, shawl, peak), buttonhole, shirt collar (wingtip, spread), neckwear (bow tie, necktie) and jacket (single/double-breasted) for a look as ‘you’ as it is timeless. Modernise with a white or velvet tux, all-black ensemble, a hit of colour, haute couture, pattern (pinstripe, split tartan) – or by ditching the vest/cummerbund and going bare or keeping it perennially dapper with plain black tie.

Morning suits are also making a comeback – but as slim fitted versions and tailored lounge suits, so with more of a sleek and structured style. From blue to forest green, check, rustic tweed and vintage burgundy, play with the colour, cut, fabric and texture to design an enduring look to individual spec.

And of course, heirloom and vintage pieces smack of timeless style while also importing extra meaning and upping the bespoke factor, so pair your grandad’s cufflinks with a ’70s shirt, a boating blazer with tailored slacks or a dogtooth waistcoat with leather loafers.

Retro colour palettes are all the rage (think burgundy, moss green, burnt orange or salmon pink), along with unique and antique accessories such as timepieces, pocket watches, fedoras, tie bars, bracelets and bolo ties.

LAIDBACK

Relaxed grooms will swoon at today’s covet-worthy collections with a highly wearable and laidback charm. Think mismatched features, eco elements and simpler styles for a wardrobe with a coolly effortless edge.

Sustainable suits are appealing to those wanting to don something both unique and more eco-friendly. This could take the form of natural materials such as linen, silk, cotton, hemp and recycled or Fairtrade fabrics; secondhand suits (your own, friends or family’s, thrift store finds), and pre-loved or rented designer suits. Consider each piece’s provenance – as well as its future use (re-wear, repurpose, donate to charity?), for the ultimate in sustainable, story-telling tailoring.

Meanwhile, mix and match styles continue to pique the interest of designers and grooms alike. Combine several key looks for an ensemble packed with interest and depth, opt for a two or three-tone colour scheme, incorporate pattern and texture for extra dimension, or focus on the details with accessories that play with function and form.

Relaxed lines and fabrics also reflect the laissez-faire approach, with silk suits or shirts, loose ’90s silhouettes and transitional wear all part of the formal loungewear vibe. You might plump for an open shirt (or polo shirt) with no tie or a bow tie, go sockless, swap the slacks for shorts or even denim, or simply ditch the waistcoat and replace your leather brogues with a pair of funky sneakers or your favourite deck shoes. It’s all about how you source, wear and pair each item to create an outfit with a quirky and carefree sense of occasion.

HERE COME THE GUYS

It’s not just about the brides! We hear from grooms about which part of the wedding day really stood out for them…
words Lucy Lawrence

Whether your groom is a Chilled-out Charlie who is breezing his way through wedding planning, a Nervous Norman who is anxiously counting down the days or a Hands-off Harry who’s leaving it all to you, chances are there will be a part of the day he’s really looking forward to. And whatever you may think, he may just surprise you with what his standout moment is. We hear from some grooms about the aspects of the wedding that made them laugh and cry. Share them with your grooms to get the excitement building, or just revel in the romance of it all to come…

Emily Jayne Weddings

“I couldn’t wait to see Lyra walk down the aisle towards me. The moment itself took my breath away. I will never forget that moment for as long as I live.”

Amal

“Turning round to see Gabriella walking down the aisle was the happiest moment of my life, she looked beautiful. Our entrance to the marquee was also spectacular – our friends and family were absolutely going for it; some were even on the chairs. It was pretty special!”

Will

“My favourite moment was when we all sat down to dinner. I looked around the room and soaked it all up. I remember thinking how lovely that all the people Chelse and I know and love are in one place and we’ll likely never have everyone together again like this.”

Lee

“Unquestionably the best part of our wedding was seeing Eve beside me. About a minute before everything started, I got very emotional and couldn’t trust myself not to crumble if I watched her walk down the aisle, so I waited for her to appear beside me. I turned and saw her looking so perfect… It sounds like a cliché but at that very point it all clicked into place and she was everything I’d ever wanted, and it was all so perfect. It hit me like an absolute lightning bolt.”

Tom

“I enjoyed my groom’s speech! I just really enjoyed being able to tell everyone how much I loved Laura and to put the whole day into some kind of perspective. At the end of the night, I sobered up enough to enjoy a moment where I realised she was my wife for life. I’ll never forget it. I kissed her on the head and called her my wife.”

Dave

“I really wanted a first dance and chose Elton John’s I’m Still Standing, which our band very kindly learnt for us.”

Ben

“The best bit? The first dance with my one true love, even though partway through I forgot what I was doing and danced off solo into the night.”

James

“Our ceremony was amazing and everything we wanted. Siobhan walked in to the sound of a live violin, which I had surprised her with.”

James

“I was feeling really nervous as our ceremony started, but when our niece was carried down the aisle throwing big fistfuls of confetti, it made me laugh and I felt like I could relax.”

Chris

“My favourite moment was sitting down to a glass of wine with my new wife Daisy; the speeches were over, and we were ready to just enjoy the next few hours.”

Andy

“I loved our first dance to John Denver’s Annie’s song. Sabrina and I absolutely love it and always said it was going to be the song we dance to.”

Giles

“Before the ceremony, Ana and I did a ‘first touch’. We stood at either side of a door, without seeing each other, and held hands while reading a card that we wrote to each other.”

Andy

“I have two favourite moments. Firstly, and most importantly, trying to memorise every aspect of Sammy walking down the aisle. I’m so happy I listened when friends and family advised me to watch her walk towards me and commit it to memory – overwhelmed doesn’t begin to describe how I felt! Secondly, I thought that we absolutely nailed the prep and execution for our bridal party marquee entrances.”

Will

“Some of my favourite parts of the wedding were when things didn’t go to plan. I found it funny and started to relax when I couldn’t get Clare’s ring on her finger. The Krispy Kreme tower was an absolute hit but over time got a bit wonky, so everyone was taking the doughnuts off it like a game of Jenga. All those stories made the day feel like ‘us’.”

YOU’RE THE MAN

The complete lowdown on how to be a best man that’s remembered for all the right reasons

Congratulations! Your best friend finally popped the big question: will you be my best man? Of course you’ve said yes; what an honour. But if you’ve never done the role before, you might be feeling a little apprehensive. Fear not, as our guide gives you everything you need to know to be the best best man ever…

The best person for the job

Before you start researching stag destinations, take a minute to check in and make sure you’ve got capacity to do a stellar job. The best man role is quite involved both in the lead-up (speech writing, stag do planning, helping out with any wedding requests) and on the day itself (emotional support, timekeeping, public speaking). If you don’t have the headspace to do it well – perhaps you’ve just grown your own family or are travelling lots for work – it’s better to be upfront now. That way your groom can work out if he can work with you, or think about other options, such as having two best men to split the load.

Suited and booted

It’s not just brides who are allowed to get excited about their wedding outfit! But with so much to choose from – from traditional tuxedos to laidback chinos and brace affairs – the groom may need your help finding The One. If he does want your input on his wedding look, be honest but tactful, and full of enthusiasm about his final decision. Even if he’s got his aesthetic nailed without you, he’ll almost certainly need your help arranging fittings for all the ushers. If his ushers are dotted all over, you could help gather their measurements instead.

Party time

It’s time to send your best boy off in style with a stag do he’ll be smiling about for years to come. And while it might sound like the advice of a party pooper, trust us, planning is key. Ask the groom for a list of invitees, create a Stag chat and get everyone to agree on a date ASAP (it should be about a month before the wedding, or before). People are busy and you don’t want to run the risk that only half of your mate’s crew turn up.

Once you’ve secured the date, it’s time to think about what to do. A night out in Newquay? A weekend city break to Bristol? A once-in-alife-time lads’ holiday to Las Vegas? This will be influenced by what your stag would enjoy and what the budget is. In most cases, it’s better to pick an option that everyone can afford. Once you’ve got the basics sorted (when and where) you can think about fun extras. Make it memorable with personal twists like a theme, fancy dress and games and activities you know he’ll love and a prank or two he might not. If you do it right, you might even come away with some excellent material for the speech. Just don’t do anything to jeopardise the stag’s health, relationship or reputation!

Trusted friend

As the big day draws closer, be sure to check in with your best mate and keep an eye on how he’s doing. Nerves in the lead-up to a wedding are normal, and he’ll likely appreciate a sounding board for any worries he’s got. It’s also traditional for the best man to stay with the groom the night before, which is another good opportunity to check in on him and make sure he’s going into the big day with the best possible mindset.

Speak easy

It’s the big one – the part that can reduce full grown men to quivering wrecks: the speech. The trick to knocking it out of the park? Get prepped early. Unless you’re a professional improv stand-up, this is not something to do on the fly. Block out some time to think about what you want to say and then start to jot down ideas. Depending on how you work best, you might type up a draft, write out some ideas longhand or record audio on your phone.

If you need a helping hand, the internet is full of ideas, witty one-liners and even complete templates – but be sure to make it your own. Share funny memories, heartwarming stories and anecdotes that’ll have guests howling. Keep refining your speech until you’ve got a draft you’re happy with, then read it aloud to a trusted friend to make sure it hits all the right notes. Once you’ve got the final version, practise it repeatedly in the lead-up. The more familiar you are with it, the smoother the delivery. And while we understand pre-speech nerves are real, don’t have more than a pint or two for Dutch courage. A sloppy performance never goes down well!

Stand by me

When the day is finally here, it’s your job to help him get married! If you didn’t stay with him the night before, he’ll probably want you there early so you can start getting ready together. You’ll want to make sure he eats, is looking dapper and stays calm. Practically, you might need to liaise with vendors, arrange photographs and whatever you do, don’t forget the rings, lest you become a punchline to a joke.

You’ll want to make sure that you make it to the venue in good time and then stay with your groom at the altar. You might have another role within the ceremony – such as signing the marriage certificate or performing a reading –and then it’s on to the reception. Your duties here will be determined by the couple but will almost certainly involve delivering a top-notch speech and then getting the party started on the dance floor.

If all that sounds like a big responsibility, it is… but the pay-off is huge! You’ll create unforgettable memories, have tons of fun and well and truly cement your friendship forever.

The Amalfi Coast meets Devon’s lush countryside, evoking vintage kitsch with a lemon-tinted modern chic aesthetic

photography Maxi Photography | coordination & styling Knots & Kisses

Adding a touch of southern Italy to an English country setting, this styled shoot takes a palette of soft lemon and duck egg blue to embrace a palpably summery feel.

Towering potted plants line the path leading to the tipi reception, with a prosecco wall welcoming guests to the celebrations. Inside, festooned fairy lights serve to conjure an intimate and swoon-worthily atmospheric setting.

Tablescapes packed with vintage china, ornamental gold candlesticks and blooms in various shades of yellow from buttermilk to lemon zest create a sensorial feast, while fine, goldrimmed charger plates are framed by white and gold flatware to lend a sense of modern opulence. Mismatched floral and striped tablecloths promote a more playful and eclectic vibe, contrasting with the clear glassware that completes the picture of classicmeets-contemporary styling.

A stationery suite featuring lemon motifs and intricate illustrations continues the colour scheme and ties the theme together, reflecting everything from the florals to the cake: a four-tiered masterpiece of textured elements and exquisite floral embellishment. Lemon trees in stone pots provide a fabulous low-level focal point to the table ends, while a hanging floral installation with drapes creates a spectacular aerial centrepiece.

The bride presents a showcase of the latest lust-worthy trends with a midriff-baring two-piece and free-flowing locks adorned with a single oversized bow, and a satin peplum top with a diamanté encrusted veil. Simple floral drop earrings are replaced by dazzling gold chandeliers and a loose, pearl-studded updo for an added air of glamour that ushers in the evening party and the promise of a long, sun-drenched summer.

Free-spirited fashions, bold and blousy blooms and nature-inspired detailing bathed in natural light evoke spring-summer to enchanting effect

photography Freeformimages Photography | styling best.day.ever!

Shot at Beaconside House in North Devon, this styled shoot celebrates the joy of a whimsical wedding in the spring and summer months in this gorgeous corner of the county.

An inviting reception space sets the scene, presenting vibrant décor with a palpably seasonal feel. From tall floral arrangements in a rainbow of hues to delicate stems scattered across the tabletops and the fresh flower-adorned cake, the floristry is a bright and beautiful ode to summer. The detailing showcases colourful glassware and candles set alongside rustic-luxe elements such as raffia charger plates, a floral stationery suite and velvet ribbons.

Stone walls and bare wooden chairs are softened by sweeping drapes and fairy lights, and contrast with the surrounding greenery that’s visible from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The result is a flooding of natural light accentuated by the twinkling chandeliers. Meanwhile, the signage provides a clean and minimal look in pared-back monochrome, adding a modern chic effect to the overall aesthetic.

The bride dons three separate looks, epitomising boho elegance with a delicate off-the-shoulder sleeved dress with boned bodice and frothy A-line skirt, then a playful two-piece comprising a fitted lace top and voluminous trousers. A sleek, backless gown with side slit and plunging lace bodice is the finale to the trio of fashions, with ethereal jewellery handcrafted in North Devon providing the beautiful endnote.

Outside, the al fresco ceremony stage oozes wild romance and, once the formalities are over, a pool party with a soundtrack from a vibrantly dressed saxophonist strikes the perfectly energised celebratory mood.

your day, your

How to plan a wedding day that is as unique as your

love story

your way

As one of life’s most exciting milestones, your wedding day is a time for celebrating everything about your relationship. The consensus among those in the industry is that the best wedding ideas are those that really represent the couple and, from bespoke menus to dazzling decorations, couples are increasingly infusing their weddings with personalised details to make their day memorable. Here are some tips to help you, as the stars of the show, put your stamp on your day and plan a wedding that’s undeniably yours…

Set the scene

Where you choose to wed will set the tone for your entire celebration, making it one of the most important decisions in the lead-up to the big day. Consider locations that have a personal meaning to you both. You could say ‘I do’ at a rustic barn venue close to your childhood homes, in the church where your grandparents were wed or at a coastal venue overlooking the beach where you first met.

Make an entrance

Arriving at the venue is a chance for you to throw even more personality into your day. You could arrive in a decked-out campervan, a horse-drawn carriage or hop out of a vintage bus. If you will be travelling between your ceremony and reception venues, you could cycle together on a tandem bike or pull up in a luxury car. Choose transport that nods toward your interests and arrive in style!

Stylish stationery

Give your guests a glimpse of the wedding magic to come with bespoke stationery suites. Use the same design style for the save the dates and invitations right through to the place name cards and table plan. Whether monochrome calligraphy or vibrant illustrations, use the design to tie your theme together.

Special ceremony

For a truly personal wedding, consider a celebrant-led ceremony. A celebrant can offer a bespoke ceremony and tell your love story throughout the proceedings; they will take the time to get to know you as a couple, understanding your values, shared memories and what makes your relationship unique. You can also include special readings and music or rituals that hold deep significance, allowing for a ceremony full of moving moments.

Personalised vows

Exchanging vows is such a poignant moment and writing your own vows will make it all the more meaningful. Speak from the heart, telling your partner how much they mean to you and what your future together looks like. Share memories, promises and reasons you fell in love.

A symbol of your love

For couples looking to infuse their ceremony with meaning, symbolic rituals are a perfect choice. From a handfasting, candle-lighting or sand ceremony, symbolic rituals represent unity and the blending of your lives. You can even involve other family members in these rituals, making it a moment of unity for everyone involved.

Hannah Wilde Photography

Furry friends

Your wedding wouldn’t be complete without including your pets! Venue permitting, your four-legged friend could accompany your bridal party as they walk down the aisle or be included in your photographs at the drinks reception. If it’s not possible for them to be there, include them in your details, like your cake topper, stationery design or in photographs dotted around the venue.

Décor and details

Let your creativity shine through with your wedding décor, whether you go for DIY decorations or work with a stylist to make your venue pop. Incorporate details that you find significant to make your wedding unique; look around your home for inspiration of what’s meaningful to you. Style your day your way and your wedding will stand out from the rest.

Flower power

Flowers can carry sentimental significance and symbolism, so select stems that mean something to you. Choose blooms that were in your parents’ wedding bouquets, that symbolise romance or that were a grandparent’s favourite fragrant flower.

Table names

For an extra personal touch, swap table numbers for names that tell a story. This could be countries you’ve travelled to together, favourite books or flower names inspired by your bouquet. Choose table names that will leave guests asking why you selected them, learning more about you and your lives together.

Fabulous favours

Forget generic wedding favours and gift your guests something that reflects your personalities and makes them smile. Whether you opt for homemade treats, like preserves and personalised biscuits, or choose something to get the party started, like alcohol miniatures and drinks tokens, choose an item you would gladly receive.

Custom cocktails

Create a signature drinks menu with bespoke cocktails. Offer a choice of ‘his and her’s’ favourites or create a bespoke beverage with a title inspired by your married surname. Complete your drinks with custom drink toppers featuring your initials or wedding date.

Food glorious food

There are so many catering options to choose from, including plated meals, sharing platters, grazing tables and food trucks. Serve dishes you love throughout your wedding breakfast to ensure the day feels authentic, including your favourite at-home dinners, or be inspired by cuisine from countries you’ve visited together. Those with a sweet tooth can incorporate ice cream trikes, doughnut walls or a dessert bar. The key is to pick food that brings you joy and that guests will remember for all the right reasons.

Let me entertain you

Think of fun and unique ways to keep guests engaged throughout the day. Golf enthusiasts could hire a mini golf course, complete with wedding-themed holes. For a classic summer soirée, hire musicians to play acoustic music while guests mingle and play garden games in the venue’s grounds. If you’re a fan of interactive experiences, hire a magician or live painter to add a different dynamic to the day. In the evening, decide if you would rather hire a DJ, band or even karaoke to make your wedding the day of your dreams.

GOOD TASTE

From mocktails to food stations, we’re serving up the latest food and drink must-haves for a wedding feast full of top-trending flavour

words Hannah May

When all is said and done at your wedding, there’s one part that will linger in the minds and mouths of your guests: the food and drink. Every other aspect may be a well considered and spoilsome affair, but if you don’t serve up something of a storm, your celebrations may run the risk of falling flat when it comes to flavour.

Having nailed the entertainment, originally styled the venue and timed every event to perfection, give your guests the best belly-fill that your budget and creativity can buy. Today’s catering trends allow couples the chance to design a menu that not only individually suits them, but also satisfies their guests, from the first morsel of the canapés to the main event of the wedding breakfast and the finale of the evening food…

Restaurant receptions

Whether you wish to relocate post-ceremony to your favourite foodie haunt, ask its chef to do the catering or take inspiration from the setting or menu – restaurant receptions are all the rage. Many hotels boast their own fine dining eateries to allow couples to stage the ceremony and sit-down meal at the same venue, while other venues either have their own in-house catering team or require outsourcing, allowing you to bring the restaurant experience directly to them. Many restaurants and venues are flexible with their hire options, whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or elopement and only require a few tables, or are keen to exclusively book the entire restaurant for your reception.

Non-formal menus

If you don’t fancy a traditional three-course meal and want to treat yourselves and your guests to a different dining experience, then personalised, non-formal menus are a must. Rather than picking a pre-set catering package, consider weaving a story

into your gastronomy. In particular, family recipes, comfort foods, dishes laden with meaning and memories (such as from your childhoods and travels together), and more personalised ways of presenting and serving tailor-made menus are part of the growing trend toward informality. Think giant self-serve pans of your mum’s paella, mobile food and drinks vans scattered throughout your venue, sushi bars, live cooking and open kitchen theatres, DIY barbecues or carveries, or a 10-course tasting menu designed from your first date through to your engagement party.

Sharing menus and grazing tables

As part of the informal dining movement, the craze for sharing platters and grazing tables is not only a fabulous way to inject some extra fun, flavour and personality into your food – it will get your guests mingling and create a relaxed, festival-feel wedding. Charcuterie and butter boards, fresh seafood, flame-grilled barbecued meat and veg, fruit platters, pastry plates and grazing tables crammed with goodies (dried fruit and nuts, mezze, freshly picked seasonal fruit) will ensure a feast for all the senses while celebrating the act and art of eating en masse.

Non-boozy drinks

Whether you’re catering to the kids, older guests, designated drivers or simply wanting to spruce up your drinks menu, non-alcoholic beverages are enjoying a moment. Thankfully, sober guests are no longer proffered only a jug of water or bottle of lemonade, as today’s drinks lists are reflecting the menu when it comes to creativity and flavour. Engaging all the senses, modern non-alcoholic drinks look, taste and smell delicious, and can range from health-boosting kombucha and iced herbal teas to vitamin drinks and cordials laced with botanicals. Depending on the season and venue, you might want to feature everything from specialist coffees, booze-free mulled wine and a hot chocolate bar to a mocktail list, non-alcoholic wine, bubbly and spirits, ‘pimp your drink’ stations (a fun addition for kids and

adults), and an array of local or exotic juices. Hire a mixologist and stock the bar with plenty of non-alcoholic options, add a separate 0% drinks table or plant booze-free bottles onto each table for guests to sample.

Interactive food stations

Food stations add another sensorial dimension to weddings, allowing guests to roam and graze at whim. Hire a few street food vans for outside your venue, arrange bespoke cocktail experiences, pop-up food tents or enhance the experience with an interactive food station for a more immersive feel. Think Korean-style barbecues set into the tables, hot rock courses, wine blending and build-your-own dessert bars (including milkshake stands, ice cream trikes, brownies and pancakes with various toppings). Combining a sense of spectacle with personal choice, interactive stations with a fiery element are one of the hottest trends du jour. Anything from barbecues to order and firepit toasted s’mores to elaborate hog roasts and grills (with griddled vegetables, chicken kebabs, prawn skewers, burnt aubergine and cheese toasties) will instantly elevate the epicurean element of your day.

Champagne towers

Blending flavour and form, champagne towers lend a beautifully architectural and artistic edge for the ultimate sense of occasion. You might want to stick with traditional flutes or coupes, source vintage tulips or opt for colourful wine glasses in different hues. Add a sweet or savoury food pairing station including the likes of white truffle, oysters, octopus, crab cakes, popcorn and strawberries. Offer multiple towers of sweet, dry and rosé –or replace the champagne with your favourite tipple such as prosecco, Aperol, whisky or espresso martini. Alternatively, add a customised champagne wall for a statement twist on welcome or toast drinks – and prepare to watch the delight-filled faces of your guests.

Dessert bars

One of the easiest ways to mix things up and score extra points with your guests is to incorporate a dessert bar. You could ask guests to BYO, send requests with their RSVPs and cater accordingly or stock a bar based on your own favourite sweet treats. The options are practically endless and nothing is, quite literally, off the table. Tarts, doughnut towers, cookies, pies, cakes, trifles, cupcakes, jellies, macarons, churros, cake pops and sweeties will ensure a lip-smacking centrepiece. Add a delectable global element with traditional wedding desserts from across the world with the likes of croquembouche, Mexican wedding cookies, bem casados, zuppa inglese or kransekake for a crowd-pleasing endnote to your wedding breakfast.

Local produce and plant-based menus

The sustainability movement is, quite rightly, going nowhere. Couples keen to host an eco-friendly and conscientious event continue to lean towards local produce, particularly with an emphasis on a plant-based menu. Regional flavours, seasonal produce and farm-to-table dishes all form part of the movement, and could feature small additions such as local jams, pickles, ice cream trikes and edible favours – or a feast sourced entirely from within a 50-mile radius. An increasing number of venues locally source or grow their own produce, while others will work with suppliers and couples to design menus inspired by the season and locale, created using sustainable practices. Minimal or zero food waste is another factor to consider and discuss with your venue and suppliers; this could involve everything from composting organic waste to donating leftovers to guests, shelters and charities.

IN THE MIX

Cocktails are a great way to add a signature element to your reception while kick-starting the party. Jo Fitch of The Buffalo shares her top five for a modern wedding

There’s nothing quite like a cocktail menu for stirring the party spirit, as Jo Fitch of The Buffalo (thebuffalo.co.uk) – the South-west’s wow-worthy mobile Airstream bars – can testify. “We serve a fully stocked bar with wine, beer, bubbles, spirits, cider and soft drinks but the cocktails are by far the most popular when we rock up!” she says. “Guests have been waiting a long time for this day to come around and they are delighted when there is a whole host of great drinks available rather than just wine and beer options.”

Recent years have seen a cocktail renaissance, resulting in more people recognising great cocktails and being willing to try something new. “Trusting your bar company is essential,” asserts Jo. “Have a chat with them to let them know what cocktails or spirits you both like so they can tailor a cocktail menu specific to what you and your guests will love.”

From retro favourites with a modern spin to bubbly cocktails, bitter concoctions and non-alcoholic sips, there’s a dizzying choice of cocktails out there. To help you narrow down a crowd-pleasing selection for your menu, we’ve asked Jo to pick out some favourites for a modern wedding or, as she says: “Some that we have tried and tested and enjoyed so much that people keep coming back for more”.

Negroni

It might be over 100 years old, but today the negroni is all the rage everywhere from hip bars to coolly contemporary weddings. “It’s not to everyone’s taste, but those who appreciate it won’t be disappointed,” comments Jo. “Quality ingredients are particularly key when there are few ingredients in a cocktail, and when it comes to the negroni this is essential. Use a great gin, vermouth and Campari, stir well and garnish with an expressed slice of orange peel rubbed round the rim.”

The Buffalo

Hurricane

Invented in a pub in New Orleans during the second world war and made famous by the song It’s Five O’clock Somewhere, a hurricane is a long, fruity and super popular cocktail. “This is sunshine in a glass!” says Jo. “Rum-based with plenty of sweetness, it ticks a lot of boxes for a great cocktail experience and is a brilliant all-rounder for those who may be cocktail shy.”

Elderflower collins

The drinking usually begins soon after your guests arrive from the ceremony, so consider your welcome cocktail carefully and start with something to set the tone of your reception. “All our cocktails are a double measure of spirit but for a welcome drink we suggest you take it easy and offer something refreshing, light and fantastically delicious,” advises Jo. “Elderflower collins does this very well. If you’d prefer something bubbly, make it a bellini.”

Espresso martini

A delicious pick-me-up, the espresso martini is fast becoming a key ingredient of a modern wedding and works particularly well after the meal to ward off the post-feasting slump. “It’s a classic but can be done so badly,” warns Jo. “When I go to a cocktail bar, the espresso martini is a good tester of how great their cocktails are. The key to this, again, is quality ingredients as, with only three ingredients, there’s not much to hide behind: you’ll need good vodka, real Kahlua and, most essential of all, awesome espresso.”

Whisky sour

Light and refreshing with delightful citrus notes, the whisky sour is another cocktail which is sure to wow the crowds. “At first, the word whisky may put people off, but hang on,” says Jo. “This is bourbon, our American friend with a sweeter finish than the Scotch whisky you may be familiar with. Tempered with lemon and sugar, it is much easier to drink than you would assume and, once tried, guests just can’t get enough.”

sweet art

From artful florals to perfectly piped vintage confections, the latest wedding cake trends will ensure a wow-worthy centrepiece for your celebrations

VINTAGE VIBES

Whether you’re drawn to Victorian elegance or retro ’70s and ’80s vibes, vintage-inspired cakes are everywhere right now – and we’re here for it. From petite to grand tiered confections, this trend is all about maximalist flourishes, dreamy pastel palettes and pristine vintage piping – Lambeth piping, in particular, is having a moment. A heart-shaped cake offers a cute take on the trend, while lace, pearls, bows or cherries add a kitsch and sweetly nostalgic finish.

FLOWER POWER

A cake decorated with flowers is nothing new, but the latest trends lean towards an organic approach to floral decoration. It might be hand-painted and texture-rich buttercream blooms, edible pressed petals, a sprinkle of delicate sugar petals, an elaborate flower crown hugging the cake or an array of flowers layered to look like they’ve grown out of it. Think abstract and playful with a sprinkle of cottagecore whimsy.

SEASIDE DREAMS

With so many couples choosing to marry on the Cornish coast, it’s only natural ocean-loving souls should wish to stamp their love of the sea onto their sweet centrepiece. You might choose a palette of sea-inspired hues, scale or wave-like texture, shoreline-inspired detailing such as shells and starfish, or a beachy vibe incorporating surfboards and beach huts.

BESPOKE BAKES

Your wedding cake offers the perfect canvas for personalisation. Cake designer Louise Roach from Ausel Cakes & Catering shares her top five tips for customising your cake...

Incorporate your story. Use design elements that reflect your relationship. This could include symbols of shared hobbies, places you’ve travelled together or significant dates. Customised cake toppers that resemble you as a couple or include pets can add a personal touch.

Match the theme. Ensure the cake aligns with the overall theme and colour scheme of your wedding. Whether it’s rustic, vintage, modern or beachthemed, the cake should complement the décor and atmosphere.

Flavour variety. Offer a variety of flavours that reflect your and your partner’s tastes. Consider having different layers with different flavours or a tiered cake with a different flavour for each tier.

Custom decorations. Add unique decorations like edible flowers, intricate lace patterns or hand-painted designs. Monograms, quotes or lyrics from your favourite song can also be incorporated.

Cake stands and displays. Personalise the presentation of your cake by using a customised cake stand or display. Adding flowers and candles to your table can give a luxurious look.

TEXTURED TIERS

Couples are increasingly rejecting a perfectly smooth finish to their cake in favour of a more textured aesthetic. Ruffles, ridges, waves or a lace-inspired design will make your cake a tactile delight as well as a striking visual element of your reception. You might opt for a palette knife painted buttercream design for an artful, one-of-a-kind statement, while chocolate lovers will find it hard to resist a tiered cake adorned with elaborate ruffles of the sweet stuff.

SUPER NATURAL

Add a touch of natural beauty to your day. Whether it’s foliage cascading down the tiers, sprigs of eucalyptus or a mix of aromatic herbs, greenery brings a garden-like feel to your celebrations. For a wildly romantic look, create a ‘wedding cake meadow’ by displaying your cake amidst a whimsical arrangement of flowers and foliage – perhaps by repurposing your ceremony flowers.

SWEET STYLING

Wedding stylist Sophie Walker from Sophie Walker Weddings and cake designer Gemma Thomas from White Peony Cake Co. share their styling tips to help you elevate your cake to top tier...

Show it off. Don’t put the most expensive cake you’re ever likely to buy in the corner. Make it stand out as a key feature of your reception. It doesn’t have to be displayed on a table –think creatively and consider other options such as a dressing table, piano, bookshelf or ladder.

Consider your cake stand. Think about what your cake is going to sit on. Have you chosen a petite confection that would benefit from a tall stand? Or perhaps your cake has a gold leaf finish and a matching gold stand would set it off perfectly? Don’t be afraid to ask your cake designer for advice.

Standout styling. Don’t leave your cake table empty. Flowers around your cake can look incredible or opt for a hanging installation above to draw focus to it. Fill it with textures, arrange different fabrics around it, add a funky tablecloth or fill it with a variety of candles and candlesticks.

If you want your cake table to look as amazing as your cake, consider hiring a stylist.

Wait until the sun is done. Don’t put your cake in the window. As beautiful as it may look with the scenery behind it, cakes are made from butter, and butter and sunshine are a bad combination!

Snap away. Make sure your photographer gets lots of photos of the cake before you cut it. Your wedding day is over in a blink of an eye and it’s hard to remember every detail.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT

When it comes to planning a guestpleasing wedding, there’s one aspect that guarantees the most memorable party: the entertainment

words Hannah May

The cringe-worthy DJ from many a wedding past is long gone as today’s couples can freely present the most personalised and eclectic schedule of entertainment to their guests.

The trick is to cover all bases by arranging something for each guest and section of the day. From the pre-wedding warm-up to the after-party, timing and atmosphere is everything. Whether you wish to prime your guests for the main event, create a soundtrack while you steal away for newlywed photos, foster a relaxed ambience for some downtime between events or ramp up the party feel for the evening’s dance-filled finale, entertainment is key to the most raved-about wedding.

We’ve asked wedding planner Laura Dalton from Kept Weddings (keptweddings.co.uk) for her advice on how to plan a day that spectacularly entertains from start to finish...

Pre-wedding party

“The pre-wedding party is the perfect opportunity to get people on the wedding day together,” says Laura. “Getting familiar with one another and settling in helps make everyone feel more comfortable. It also allows you to spend more time with your guests so you can focus on being together on the wedding day itself. Most couples typically opt for a more relaxed affair with casual drinks and music to help manage people’s excitement before the big day. But it is becoming more popular to entertain guests beforehand to extend the celebrations. Think tacos and a mariachi band, ballgowns and casino night, casuals and quiz, or you can split the party with a pamper or pub.”

Depending on the type, venue and time restraints of your day, the opportunities before the main event can vary from a family meal at home the night before to an extended day of preparations mixed in with

early celebrations. Couples opting for an elopement or intimate wedding could host a small drinks soirée, while a weekend marquee wedding may call for a daylong festival-style party to extend the mood. Discuss your ideas with your planner, venue and suppliers and work within your budget and time frames to create a pre-wedding party to match.

Pre-ceremony

It’s becoming increasingly common for ‘first look’ scenarios whereby the couple sneak a peek of each other ahead of the vows, as well as mingling with guests either together or separately as part of a more casual welcoming event. Preambles provide a brilliant way for everyone to officially say hello, share a drink, lend support and relax in each other’s company before the more formal proceedings begin. These can take the form of canapés and drinks outside the ceremony venue, a family brunch or lunch at or near the venue (your favourite restaurant, a laidback picnic, food vans or beach barbecue) or even a wedding breakfast ahead of a sunset ceremony. You can make food a particular

focal point and feature of entertainment (mixologist, live cooking station, interactive elements) or prioritise the entertainment itself such as with a saxophonist, vocalist or a live portrait or landscape artist.

“As guests arrive for the ceremony it’s always nice to set the tone of the day,” advises Laura of the importance of establishing atmosphere early on.

“Romantic ambient music is a lovely touch to serenade the audience. String quartets, singers and pianists are a staple for entry music, but we are seeing more cellists, loop pedal guitarists and harpists emerging as an alternative. If you are looking for something a bit different, but with great impact, consider a choir. The many voices add another level to your setting that will impress and captivate your guests” – priming them for the ceremony and building anticipation for the bride’s grand entrance.

Ceremony

and bride’s entrance to the spaces between the vows, readings, signing of the register and exit, allow your creativity as much free rein as you fancy.

“Tradition always has its place during the ceremony, but you could always be ‘extra’ and have a dance performance before your big reveal,” suggests Laura. “Perhaps ballet dancers leading the procession or an aerialist to wow your guests? You could even make an entrance via helicopter (if the venue allows)! Nothing is too much, right?”

Pepper proceedings with some personalised entertainment, from a live singing duo or musical performance to mini theatrical interludes and aisle dance outros. Bring the unusual into the traditional with an owl ring-bearer or singing celebrant. By incorporating your passions and personalities into each part of the ceremony and splicing entertainment into traditional elements, you’ll create a beautifully bespoke and highly engaging affair.

Drinks reception

Get the party started in inimitable style with a drinks reception designed to surprise, enthral and amuse your guests. Kick off with a cocktail hour, circus act, soul singer, fairground rides or garden games – and don’t forget to make the food and drink a sensorial feast too courtesy of towering champagne fountains, pimp-your-drink stands and colourful grazing stations complete with statement floral design.

“Bring the good vibes with more music, like a saxophonist, roaming band or brass band,” says Laura of some of the best party starters. “A live painter, illustrator or caricaturist are lovely additions for your guests to receive personal keepsakes, but you could also have roaming artists like magicians, tarot readers or jugglers to keep your guests entertained while you are having your photos taken. For longer drinks receptions, food carts such as ice cream, popcorn or doughnuts are a nice treat that we are seeing more of – especially at summer weddings.”

Don’t forget to cater to all ages too. Set up a kids’ corner or crèche area where you can arrange toys, arts and crafts stations, a bouncy castle, Punch and Judy show, balloon artist or face painters – or employ

a kids’ entertainer to occupy younger guests without the need for parental presence.

It’s also worth having a chill-out tent or area for older guests complete with a snug, tea and coffee bar, books or magazines, and laidback soundtrack (jazz pianist, Ibiza lounge-inspired playlist) – which can be adapted as the day progresses to accommodate anyone wanting a post-feast siesta or lazy evening sundowner.

Wedding breakfast

“The wedding breakfast is certainly an awaited affair by guests, but once they’re all fed and watered, you could surprise them with singing waiters or an impersonator to prevent the after-dinner slump and elevate the day going into the night,” suggests Laura. “They help the transition from romance to fun as guests put on their dancing shoes for the evening reception.”

Entertaining guests during the wedding breakfast again depends on the format and layout. A three-course sitdown menu might warrant a harpist, while a selection of street food stations could be flanked by a glitter bar, stilt walkers and aerial acrobats.

The speeches are the traditional means of entertainment and can be delivered before, during or after the meal, with many couples scattering

them throughout courses. Mix this up by playing videos (marryoke, recordings or live feeds from guests unable to attend, vintage footage from the newlyweds’ childhoods), audio or voice notes, and even organising sketches by child guests or performance artists. Host a Mr & Mrs Quiz, table games or hire an actor such as a celebrity lookalike to fit with your theme. Conversation and guest interaction tends to dominate the wedding breakfast, which can be accentuated by interactive catering options like sharing platters, self-serve stations, table chefs and DIY options (build your own dessert, barbecues). Anything from a playlist packed with guest requests to a live band, cellist or steel band could provide the upbeat soundtrack.

Evening reception

When day turns to night, the sense of abandon and celebration is usually revved up, so you’ll want to plan your evening entertainment accordingly. Most couples start with something energised – a live band or specially curated playlist for leading into the first dance that then transitions into a group dance of some kind. Remember: there are no rules when it comes to how and when you decide to don your dancing shoes (if at all!)

“DJs and bands are always the main event when it comes to entertainment on your wedding day and are a must-have to keep the dance floor pumping and energy high,” says Laura, who recommends plumping for personal choice when it comes to genre, such as Motown, party hits, dance or ’80s. “Change it up with a barn dance or even a bandeoke whereby people get the opportunity to feel like a superstar performing with their own band on stage,” she adds.

In short, a plethora of entertainment awaits you and your evening guests to match all moods and party spaces, from silent discos and casino tables to drag performers, s’mores around the firepit, smoke bombs, stand-up comedians, fire breathers, dance troupes, laser shows and pyrotechnics. Go en masse with a ceilidh, line dancing or groomsmen and bridal party dance-off, or arrange splinter areas of entertainment with a photo booth, petting zoo, pamper tent, escape room experience or virtual reality party arcade. No end to the fun!

love at first dance

The

first dance: a dread for some, a delight for others. Either way, thinking about it in advance will ensure your celebrations start on the right foot

Whether the thought of the first dance fills you with terror or excitement, there’s a range of options to suit exactly how you wish to tackle the newlywed rite of passage.

Ask yourselves a few questions to get started, such as how do you envision it happening? What will work best for you as a couple and the type of wedding you’re planning? You might want to have a little fun with it or flip the tradition on its head – whether that’s including a posse of your loved ones, incorporating your child guests or even getting your beloved pooch involved.

Then there’s the music. Choose a song that reflects your personalities: don’t conform to tradition or select the track that’s popular at the time if it doesn’t suit who you are as a couple. You might prefer a classic ballad, a symbolic replay of the record that your parents danced to on their wedding day or your all-time favourite get-on-the-dancefloor party track. An acoustic or live performance, vocals by a talented friend or even a karaoke session can make the first dance a unique and utterly ‘you’ event to relish and remember.

Alternatively, you might want to ditch the first dance entirely and replace it with a new tradition or party-starting event to individually suit. We’ve rounded up a range of ideas to help you shimmy your way into married life to your very own beat...

Impromptu

One of the most popular choices, the impromptu first dance is usually the result of selecting a special song (or not) and simply rolling with it. Some couples practise a few of their moves in advance, but generally it’s a case of seeing where the music and mood (and bubbly!) takes you. The endnote is a more relaxed, ‘non-performance’ approach, signalling the start of the party with the mass migration of your guests onto the dancefloor as the tempo builds or switches into party mode.

Choreographed

A routine of some sort marks a more dedicated response to the first dance. You might have studied performance art, take regular salsa classes together or just love to move, so a choreographed dance will give you the perfect chance to show off your skills and repertoire.

Go romantic with a ballroom dance (rumba, anyone?), pay homage to your favourite film or musical by replicating one of its iconic dance numbers (think Dirty Dancing, Pulp Fiction, Grease, Footloose and Saturday Night Fever), learn the steps to a dance song (Macarena remains as infectiously fun as ever) or employ a professional to help you create your own dance routine to suit your ability and personalities.

Group dance

If you’re keen on taking the pressure off while upping the fun factor, then a group dance is the easiest solution. This could be a family affair (you two and the kids/your parents/entire extended family), the newlyweds and the bridal party or all the guests – and can be impromptu, choreographed or even take the form of a dance-off. The newlyweds could still have a centre-stage moment or performance within the dance, or blend into the troupe entirely.

It could also involve an outfit change, entertainment element (such as acrobatics, circus act, live band or light show) or a complete mash-up of music and dance styles, starting with a slow couple’s dance before blending into an upbeat family boogie followed by a group R&B routine with your gal pals (you can’t beat Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love, for example). Variations on group dances include line dancing (either instructor-led or with a screen playing instructions), a ceilidh or a folk dance. Ask your guests to submit their favourite song or to learn the moves to a pre-selected dance and give your DJ a list of well-known moves-in-the-lyrics songs such as YMCA, Time Warp and the Conga.

Professional dance performance

Employing a group of professional dancers can double up as the first dance and wedding entertainment, and can take place alongside a couple’s dance or instead of. You could join in for the duration, toward the end or be the opening act – it’s entirely up to you. The great thing about this option is that you can pick dancers and music to suit the theme and feel of your wedding. For example, if your wedding has a retro, rock and roll vibe, ask your dance act to perform the bunny hop, jitterbug or hand jive – and ask your guests to learn them if they’d like to partake in the performance (giving them the element of choice takes the pressure off them too!). There are so many options, from belly dances and ballet to Bollywood, Argentine tango and Latin styles.

Father-daughter

If the groom isn’t thrilled (or remains terrified) of the first dance or you’d like to honour another special person instead of – or as well as – him, then switching partners is another option. Many brides begin the dance with their spouse before the father of the bride cuts in, but this could also be her brother, mother, sister, best friend, grandparent or child. When it comes to the first dance, do exactly what you want – dance The Loco-Motion with your mum before launching into a Disney megamix with your daughter and ending with Cha Cha Slide en masse! You could also congregate a few couples to join you, such as your siblings and their partners, mothers and fathers, aunties and uncles, and so on.

Champagne shenanigans

Champagne-based events are gaining popularity as a fun first dance alternative. The couple still briefly take centre stage and mark the sense of occasion but do it in unique (and dance-free!) style. With each guest clutching a glass of bubbly, you can make a grand toast to you and them whilst you saber a bottle of champers and say a few choice words to kick-start the celebrations. Or you might prefer the thrill and spectacle of pouring a champagne tower before handing out glasses to your guests to signify that the party has officially started!

Performers

Interactive performers are all the rage, and paying someone else to take the spotlight eases the stress and ups your enjoyment levels to boot. Think about your venue and how to utilise and maximise its space and facilities. For example, plant aerialists in a giant hat tipi, stage a theatrical performance in a large garden, add artistic swimmers to a pool or scatter professional storytellers around a bonfire. Depending on the vibe or theme of your day, you could employ all kinds of acts, from fire-breathers and belly dancers to asking the local kids’ dance school to perform to a song or two. So long as there’s music and movement, you can class it as a ‘first dance’ experience!

You could even rope your guests into a performance of some kind, whether by asking in advance and tapping into their skill sets and passions (musician friends, magician family members, tarot card readers...), or by hosting an impromptu group singalong or dance, for example, a line dance, ceilidh, dance-off/competition, which is a particularly cute icebreaker and dance floor opener if you involve any children at your wedding.

Opt out

It’s important to remember that the first dance, like so much else in modern weddings, is optional. If for any reason you can’t or don’t want to have one, then don’t. If you’re concerned about leaving that section out, then employ a professional dancer or musician to take to the stage in your absence or simply invite all your guests onto the dance floor for the first song of the evening. If it’s nerves that’s prohibiting you, wait for the party to be in full swing for a first dance interlude once you’ve warmed into the party spirit or swap the first dance for a last dance at the very end of the night (or even surprise your spouse by saving it for the privacy of your honeymoon suite!).

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

Wedding planner Laura Dalton of Kept Weddings reveals her top tips for avoiding decision fatigue

words Lucy Lawrence illustrations Maria Taylor

Once the initial engagement euphoria has passed and you get stuck into planning your wedding, it’s only a matter of time before you realise all the possibilities that are available to you – the options really do seem endless. Before you get lost in Pinterest, wedding planner Laura Dalton of Kept Weddings (keptweddings.co.uk) shares her expert tips to help you stay on track and avoid decision fatigue, so you can say yes to the dress (and the venue, décor and everything else).

Create a mood board

Starting off with a mood board is a great way to define what you envisage for your wedding day. Add pictures, colours and words that describe how you want to feel and how you want your wedding to look. This will create an aesthetic that is authentically you and your partner to help determine which suppliers you book. For example, if you envision a fairytale wedding, you might opt for words like whimsical, romantic, elegant and traditional and include soft shades and sparkle.

Then (this is the important bit), when it comes to reaching out to suppliers, refer to your mood board to check they match the aesthetic you are going for. This will help to eliminate any options that just don’t work for your style.

Create a brief for each supplier

Before you search for your perfect supplier, write down a brief that describes what it is you want from them. For example, if you are looking for a cake artist, you might want to go with someone who can provide three of your favourite flavours, can make a cake with royal icing and can offer doughnuts, macaroons or popsicles alongside the cake. Define your checklist and consider this when requesting further information from your options.

Allow yourself a break

When it feels like decision fatigue is setting in, allow yourself to take a break from wedding planning or look into another aspect of your wedding plans instead. Taking a step back and revisiting what you are looking for with fresh eyes will help you to think more clearly about your decision. You can always revert to your initial supplier brief to remind yourself what it was you wanted in the first place. Considering whether that has changed will help you to make the right decision.

Keep it local

Start local before looking further afield. When you open your search outside of your county or region, you will be inundated with even more options to consider. These

supplier, stop looking!

Often weddings are booked in advance and the leadtime until the big day will see the industry move and trends change. This may lead you to question your decisions. Unfollow any accounts you began following at the start of your supplier research journey and avoid looking for more inspiration or at previous options. Refer to your mood board and brief, remembering why you chose the words and pictures to describe your aesthetic and requirements in the first place.

Book a wedding planner

A wedding planner is a fantastic support if you have decision fatigue. Their logistical and practical nature combined with experience and knowledge will help provide independent and honest advice to enable you to make informed choices. They will listen and understand you and your aesthetic, which will enable them to propose a reasonable amount of options that they feel suit you best.

Having worked with many suppliers in the industry, a planner will take real life experience into account that will provide clarity and logic to your decisions. If booking a full wedding planning package is not an option for you, most wedding planners offer one-off virtual planning consultations to discuss a specific area you are experiencing decision fatigue with.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

Finally, if you’re still umming and aahing, learn from real bride Sophie’s advice, after she and Henry planned their wedding in four months. “We just had to make decisions quickly and go for it – procrastination just causes more stress and sometimes the most spontaneous decisions are the best ones!”

“Taking our vows was really special - even though I could barely speak for crying!”
Beautiful love stories from across Devon
SHONI AND LEWIS by TOBY LIDSTONE

Blossom Season

Shoni and Lewis’ spring wedding at Rockbeare Manor was filled with flowers and love

Shoni and Lewis’ love story began almost 13 years ago when they met through mutual friends on a night out. “We spent the whole night talking about music and making each other laugh,” she reminisces. Lewis’ plan to propose during an orchestral performance of the theme song from Spirited Away – a particularly special song for Shoni – was scuppered when the London show was postponed due to Covid. He decided to go ahead with his plan and proposed during a late-night stroll in St James’s Park instead.

The answer was an easy ‘yes’, as was their decision to marry at Rockbeare Manor. “We knew straight away it was the one. It’s so beautiful with soaring high ceilings, large windows and lots of period features while still having neutral décor to suit any wedding colour scheme,” says Shoni. “We had a cherry-blossom-themed wedding as this reminds us of Japan; our dream holiday and soon-to-be honeymoon destination!”

A striking palette of black, white and pale pink made for a dreamy scene, with faux cherry blossom trees lining the aisle and crowning the tables, a showstopping arch under which the couple exchanged vows and glass tea light holders enhancing the romantic atmosphere. The tiered cake carried the darker accents the couple were keen to incorporate, while the wedding favours were a DIY effort. “We saved up jam jars for two years and made candles,” says Shoni. “They also served as our guests’ place names.”

The bridal party looked pretty as a picture with Shoni dazzling in an off-the-shoulder lace gown, while her bridesmaids wore pale pink dresses and carried bouquets of pale pink tea roses, astilbe and eucalyptus. “I felt like an elven princess!” says Shoni, whose family dog, Indi, took both flower girl and ring-bearer duties in a blossom flower collar and matching ring box inscribed with the couple’s initials.

The blossom-filled ceremony was filled with personal touches and emotion. “Our friend Dan played piano as I walked down the aisle and our friend Lizzie did a reading for us. We wrote our vows ourselves, which were very emotional to read – I barely got through mine!” she reflects.

Spilling outside to a deluge of pink confetti, the newlyweds and their guests mingled over champagne and canapés before taking their seats for a feast comprising the likes of Moroccan vegetable tagine; tomato, aubergine and mozzarella parmigiana; sirloin of Devon beef; and sticky toffee pudding with vanilla gelato.

As day turned to night, the party got into full swing, thanks to the DJ’s playlist peppered with Shoni and Lewis’ favourite tunes. “He was great at playing a lot of the rock, metal and K-pop that we requested!” she laughs. Fuelled by a delicious array of freshly baked pizzas, guests danced into the small hours, with a sparkler tunnel providing a memorable interlude in the evening drizzle.

Looking back, the pair are full of cherished memories and happy their day panned out in perfectly personal style. “Lewis took my surname – a breaking of tradition and something that we are quite proud of!” says Shoni who advocates sharing the wedding planning load with willing family and friends. “Ask your friends and family for help wherever you can and give yourselves plenty of time,” she advises. “Try and spend quality time together and remember why you are doing this all in the first place.”

Something Blue

Claire and Robi filled their wedding at Gara Rock with al fresco vows and shoreline strolls

From the wild romance of the north coast to the dreamy sands of the south, Devon’s coastline has played a starring role in Claire and Robi’s love story. After 10 years together, Robi asked Claire to marry him on Saunton Sands beach. “It’s a special place for us as my family used to live in the area, and I used to holiday there while growing up,” she explains.

On searching for their dream venue, it was a case of love at first sight when they arrived at Gara Rock, which is perched on the clifftops of South Devon. “As you come down the lane, the narrow lane opens up and you are met with the most spectacular view of the coastline with the bright blue sea in the background,” says Claire. Opting for an exclusive-use package meant the couple could enjoy having the hotel to themselves for a weekend of celebrations with guests who had travelled from all corners of the world. “Plus, it was dog-friendly, meaning our lab Dexter could be involved,” she adds.

A palette of blue and white complemented the coastal backdrop perfectly and carried from the elegant floral arrangements and bridesmaids’ dresses to the tables styled with blue and white linens, tapered candles, single blooms in glass vases and coastal style woven placemats. Embellished with blue and white florals, the stationery completed the picture, with portraits of the couple’s dog and cat adding a characterful touch to the signs.

An early morning sea swim with Dexter was the perfect start to the day for Claire, who enjoyed a morning of preparations with her bridal party before the al fresco ceremony on the terrace. “We always hoped we’d be able to have an outdoor ceremony to capture as much of the beautiful view as possible. Fortunately for us, the weather was absolutely perfect. We had blue skies, sunshine and a gentle sea breeze,” she says. The couple took their vows beneath a beautiful moongate arch of flowers, the ocean beyond. “It was truly the perfect setting!”

A vocalist lent her soul-stirring vocals to the ceremony and drinks reception, during which guests enjoyed Pimm’s, champagne and canapés while an artist painted live portraits. After a wedding breakfast featuring pan-fried coastal sea bream, 28-day dry aged beef fillet and white chocolate torte, Claire, Robi and the wedding party headed down to the beach for golden hour photos on the sands.

“We chose Belong Together by Mark Ambor for our first dance,” says Claire. “It was one of the last things we decided upon, but it turned out to be a perfect choice for us. It’s upbeat, a little bit casual but the lyrics also have a bit of romance to them.” Ibiza Lights then brought the party vibes, with a DJ, saxophone and bongos providing the perfect dance floor-filling formula.

Reeling from her dreamy coastal wedding, Claire struggles to pinpoint a single highlight. “It’s hard to pick a favourite moment because the whole weekend came together perfectly. We honestly wouldn’t have changed a single thing,” she says. The couple have plenty of advice for other couples in the midst of planning, however. “There’s nothing you can’t do with a good spreadsheet!” says Robi. “We used it to track everything: suppliers, guest RSVPs, food choices, allergies, seating plans, payment due dates, the works! It helped us stay organised with everything and made sure there weren’t any surprises.”

Wild Woods

Alice and Chris celebrated their love with a close-to-nature wedding in the woods

Alice and Chris’ love story began on a night out in Reading. Nine years later, Chris proposed with a ring he had designed himself while the couple were visiting the Forest of Dean with their dog and six-week-old baby, Beatrix. It was an easy ‘yes’ for Alice and the nature-loving couple chose to celebrate their union in the woodland of Middle Coombe Farm, set deep in the Devon countryside.

Drawing on the natural beauty of the setting and their soon-to-be married name of Green, ‘Woods and Wild’ became the theme of the celebrations. “It was important that green featured in the décor and colour scheme, and this also enhanced the natural rustic charm of the venue. Vibrant wildflowers added a splash of colour,” explains Alice who relished bringing her vision to life, handcrafting everything from the signage and bunting to the table runners and lanterns, and styling the cider barn with homegrown seasonal flowers. “We were fortunate to be able to forage for a lot of foliage on-site to further enhance the woodland feel,” she says. “We were very grateful to have friends and family help us put it all together the day before the wedding!”

Alice’s day began with a swim and dip in the hot tub followed by the bridal preparations, decorating the cake, making flower combs and preparing a cream tea with her bridesmaids – all with four children under three in tow!

After a busy morning, she was ready to savour the tranquil woodland walk alongside her mum and bridesmaids to a mystical oak tree clearing where the ceremony took place. “The walk was like a fairytale, and the forest setting and being enveloped by love and nature was perfection,” she reflects. “We chose to write our own vows, which were very emotional. Having forgotten to print them, Chris planned on reading his from his phone but the poor signal meant they would not load! This meant his vows truly came from the heart.” Looking back, this was Alice’s standout moment of the day. “He revealed all of himself in that moment. It was a feeling of utter acceptance and love,” she says.

After a confetti shower of home-grown roses, the newlyweds toasted their union with a Devon cream tea served amongst the trees. “My dad then changed into his town crier outfit and performed the most incredible cry that bellowed and echoed across the valley!” says Alice. “It was breathtaking and so special as this is a hobby that my dad and I share.”

Packed with locally sourced produce, the sharing-style wedding feast included chicken in creamy cider and chestnut sauce, slow-cooked lamb, pulled jackfruit and roasted vegetable Wellington.

As day turned to night, Alice changed into an Art Deco-style evening gown to take to the floor for the first dance. “We had spent three short hours with a dance teacher to learn a Strictly-style dance to Rather Be by Clean Bandit and we twirled around the floor in complete euphoria. The moment the dance finished and all our loved ones joined us to party was completely unforgettable and radiated love and joy. It was the best moment of my life,” she reflects. Revellers then partied the night away to the couple’s personalised playlist followed by a glowstick rave into the small hours.

“Give yourself the time to enjoy it!” says Alice by way of advice for other couples. “Don’t plan for next year – plan for the year after to allow yourself time to enjoy it, think about the details and not cause unnecessary stress.”

Rural Romance

Bella and Mat made their wedding at The Oak Barn a relaxed celebration full of personal touches

Meeting through mutual friends at Durham University, Mat asked Bella to go on a dog walk one day – and romance blossomed. Six years later, the couple were camping in northern Spain when Mat popped the question atop a cliff, with a beautiful sunset as the scenic backdrop.

“I am from Devon and always wanted to get married here,” says Bella, who fell in love with the idyllic location, celebration spaces and accommodation of The Oak Barn. “The venue felt very ‘us’ – it is beautiful and relaxed at the same time, down to the fact that you can really make it your own,” she says.

Personal touches and nods to Devon were woven throughout their celebrations, which stretched across four days. “The lead-up to the wedding included exploring the beautiful countryside of Dartmoor and a cocktail masterclass,” says Bella. Opting for a palette of pastel shades to complement the rustic spaces of the barn, the couple dotted the tables with posies of wildflowers they had arranged themselves. “We collected candles, candleholders and table decorations,” she says. “We received lots of compliments for our personal choice of table numbers. We made a series of ‘when we were one, two, three…’ cards with photos of us at that age. This small touch went a long way!”

Flanked by bridesmaids in soft blue, Bella donned a vintage boho style gown for the al fresco ceremony led by the couple’s close friend Promeet. “Promeet has known us both since before the start of our relationship, so it felt really fitting and personal to have him lead the ceremony,” Mat explains. “He wrote a beautiful script for the ceremony, which was personal and really captured the essence of our relationship.”

After the ceremony, guests tucked into a homemade cream tea served on vintage china followed by a hog roast and fresh salads. A dessert table filled with cakes, brownies and cookies homemade by friends and family provided the sweet endnote to the flavoursome feast before guests spilled out into the scenic grounds for mingling and garden games in the late afternoon sun. A 30-person competitive game of Flunkyball – a German game testing your hand-eye coordination and drinking skills – proved a highlight. “We were enjoying this space so much we kept pushing our first dance back to enjoy the last of the evening sun!” says Bella.

When the couple’s first dance did finally get underway, “it was just a lot of fun and we got everyone to join in dancing halfway through! It was to Automobile by Kaleo, an Icelandic band we have been going to see for years,” Mat explains. “It’s a song that we listened to a lot very early in our relationship. It’s all about going on an adventure, which felt very right for our wedding day!”

A hearty buffet of homemade Scotch eggs, pasties, cured meats and local cheeses ensured guests were full of energy for a night of dancing, with a DJ providing the dance floor-filling music. “I’ll never forget Sheila, Mat’s 91-year-old grandma, tearing up the dance floor!” laughs Bella.

Reflecting on their festivities in the Devon countryside, the newlyweds have some wise words for other engaged couples. “Be true to yourselves – there’s no right and wrong with weddings, but rather ‘right for you’ and ‘wrong for you’,” says Bella. “Plan a wedding you’d like to attend and there’s a high chance everyone else will too!”

Better Together

Rosie and Matt filled their clifftop celebrations at Bigbury Bay Weddings with colour and DIY details

Meeting at a Plymouth high school at the age of 18, Rosie and Matt became friends before they started dating. On their 10-year anniversary, the couple spent a weekend in the Cotswolds. “We went for a hike to Cam Peak, where Matt showed me a short video he’d made of clips of our 10 years together, before proposing with a bespoke ring he’d designed featuring an aquamarine - the same stone as my mum’s engagement ring,” says Rosie.

A beachside venue was a must for the couple, who share a love of the Devon coast. “Bigbury and Bantham beach have always been special to my family with many birthdays and achievements celebrated on Bigbury especially,” says Rosie. “Once we arrived at Bigbury Bay Weddings and saw the spectacular view we just knew it was where we should get married!”

Choosing a sophisticated pastel rainbow palette with lots of plants and flowers, including peonies, dahlias and camomile, Rosie and Matt love crafting and wanted to make all the details of the wedding completely unique. They made everything including the candle-holders, frames and pots, with friends and family pitching in to help source or make the design elements. Rosie designed all the wedding stationery which included her illustration of the stunning view from the venue.

Getting legally married before the wedding meant their clifftop ceremony could be led by their friend William. “He made it into something so personal and funny, and captured us as a couple perfectly!” she says. With Rosie’s family dog, Teddy, as the ring-bearer, Rosie and Matt then exchanged their own handwritten vows. “We both managed to keep it together and live in the moment of the day. It was just so special to be able to create our perfect ceremony and make it so personal,” she says.

After the ceremony, pasties, prosecco and beers were served in the top garden, with hand-marbled glasses created by Rosie for each guest to use and keep as a wedding favour. A musician provided an acoustic soundtrack as the couple headed off to a nearby field for photos. “We could see the wedding from a distance with everyone enjoying themselves,” says Rosie. “It was an amazing sense of achievement.”

Adopting a relaxed approach to the wedding feast, guests feasted on burgers, sausages, chicken, salads and chips followed by cheesecakes and a biscuit bar filled with the couple’s favourite sweet treats, including ginger biscuits made from Rosie’s nana’s recipe. Coldplay’s Yellow was the couple’s first dance song, performed by The Nashville Heat. “We all sang and danced together; it was such a special moment!” says Rosie. “Then they really brought the party. They had us all congaing around the marquee picking up biscuits from the bar en route! Everyone danced and sang and just had the best time, which is all we could ask for.”

Looking back, the couple are grateful for the “team effort” that went into creating such a meaningful wedding day. “Both Matt and I were as involved as each other; we each crafted, designed and decided on the whole thing together and it was really a wedding for us both,” she reflects. “Also, on the day Matt and I made a promise to stick together: talk to everyone together, eat with each other, get drinks with each other. It meant we actually experienced the day together.”

Ellie and Liam packed their romantic rural wedding with personality and heartfelt moments

Meeting via a dating app in February 2020, Ellie and Liam instantly hit it off before the first Covid lockdown stopped them spending more time together. Recognising that they’d found something special, however, the couple moved in together in May to ensure they kept to the Covid rules. “My friends and family were slightly concerned I was moving in with a stranger from the internet so quickly, but it all worked out with a happy ending!” says Ellie, who got engaged to Liam after he proposed at the top of Arthur’s Seat while the comedy-loving couple attended Edinburgh fringe festival.

Deciding on Ash Barton Estate as the setting for their wedding, a palette of burgundy, gold and brass carried through the details of their relaxed and personality-packed day. “We wanted a casual, fun theme and tried to be as sustainable as possible,” says Ellie.

With Liam’s childhood friend taking the role of celebrant, the ceremony took place in the chapel strewn with fairy lights. “We designed the ceremony to be important and meaningful but not religious,” explains Ellie. “We wrote our own vows and our guests partook in a ring-warming ritual to be part of our union. We also included a German wedding tradition where we sawed through a log to symbolise working together to overcome obstacles – this was a big hit with the guests and a fun spectacle to keep the energy in the room!”

After showering the newlyweds with confetti, everyone gathered in the walled garden for drinks, canapés and a live bird of prey show. “We love bird-watching!”, explains Ellie. “This was followed by my mum playing the guests into dinner with her bagpipes.” In a nod to the couple’s love of travelling, the cuisine had flavour influences from all over the world, including cajun prawns and jerk halloumi, lemongrass and Thai green monkfish and steak with Argentinian chimichurri, while the dessert was a special banoffee pie made with Liam’s late sister’s recipe.

Cocktail hour in the gardens allowed guests to enjoy the golden light and rural panoramas before the first dance to an acoustic version of Foo Fighters’ Times Like These. “Foo Fighters were Liam’s sister’s favourite band; she sadly passed away when Liam was in his 20s, so this was a chance to make sure she was included in the day and celebrated as an important part of our lives,” explains Ellie. Live band Fever Heat kept the party in full swing, with guests dancing into the small hours.

Looking back, the speeches stand out as a particular highlight for the couple. “Everyone did such an amazing job. They were hilarious and poignant, and I loved seeing our best friends, Liam and my parents, deliver them so flawlessly!” says Ellie, who also reflects on the many personal elements they wove into their day. “I loved the unique bits that we designed as surprises for our guests. These really made our personalities shine through, and we still get people talking about them months later, especially the falconry show, with guests being able to hold a golden eagle, and the wood cutting,” she reminisces.

“My advice is to mix the necessary admin with the fun creative bits,” she says. “And book an on-the-day coordinator! This is a must, so you can truly enjoy the day and not worry about any logistics or supplier management on the day.”

“We designed the ceremony to be important and meaningful”
“It was a cold winter’s day with a fresh frost and all the candles were lit”

Midwinter Magic

Pollyanna and Marcus’ winter wedding at Huntsham Court was a party to remember

“We met the ‘modern way’ during 2014 – the year anyone and everyone was on Tinder!” laughs Pollyanna. After seven years of dating, the couple were at Marcus’ family beach house in Norfolk when he asked her to marry him. “We were up there very early one morning looking down at the sea,” she says. “I thought Marcus had bent down to grab our swimming costumes, but he ended up getting on one knee and proposing!”

Deciding on a midwinter wedding in the Devon countryside, the couple chose the elegant setting of Huntsham Court for their manor house celebrations. The family tartan was the starting point for planning the décor. “Marcus’ family has a tartan called Ancient Davidson, so I leant into that with lots of greenery, whites and purple thistles,” explains Pollyanna.

Their friends and family arrived at Huntsham Court the night before the wedding, where they started the celebrations early with pizzas washed down with champagne. Despite the drama of an estate-wide power cut the next morning, Pollyanna was ready for the 1.30pm ceremony – and her arrival stands out as one of her most treasured memories.

“Walking down the stairs with my mum and maid of honour, then walking into the Great Hall where my family and bridesmaids were waiting and cheering for the big reveal was one of my favourite parts of the day,” she remembers. Choosing to wed in the ancient village church, located just along the venue’s driveway, Pollyanna dazzled in a striking Jesus Peiro gown, with Marcus in bespoke trews in the family tartan and a Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket.

“I had to walk down the aisle alone as my dress was so wide!” says Pollyanna. “We had three readings from Marcus’ uncle and my two stepparents and then three hymns. It was a cold winter’s day with a fresh frost and all the candles were lit – it was incredibly atmospheric. I walked into Bittersweet Symphony on strings and we walked out to Crazy Little Thing Called Love!”

Back at Huntsham Court, a champagne reception took place in the Great Hall to the resplendent sounds of a string quartet, whetting the guests’ appetites for an exquisite wedding feast. “We walked into dinner to everyone cheering and spinning their napkins above their heads!” laughs Pollyanna, who did a speech alongside her maid of honour, dad, husband and Marcus’ godfather and best man.

Enjoying two courses at tables styled with candelabras and stems of white blooms, starters of smoked duck breast and crispy gnocchi were followed by mains of chicken breast with dauphinoise potatoes, balsamic shallot, ham hock fritter and organic greens, and squash, sage and goat’s cheese strudel. Puddings were enjoyed in the library, alongside a selection of cakes made by Pollyanna’s mum.

The evening saw the bride changing into a party-ready dress and sparkly cloak for their first dance to Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson’s version of Valerie. “Everyone crashed the dance floor after the first verse – it was wild; completely raucous!” says Pollyanna. “We partied into the night and were last to bed around 4am!”

Her top tips for busily planning couples are centred around organisation. “Start early and try to knock the big things off – if you want a big band, book very very early,” she advises. “Figure out what aspects are important to you; for us it was the dance floor so we decided on a band and booked that first, and then worked the budget and everything else around that.”

The Wilds of Dartmoor

Laura and Alex threw a small, wildflowerfilled wedding at Southcombe Barn

Meeting at a climbing centre near their home in Hampshire, Alex plucked up the courage to say hello to Laura. “From that day on, we were inseparable as friends, heading out on climbing, hiking and wild camping adventures around Europe and the UK,” says Laura. “During this time, I fell in love with Alex’s zest for life and adventurous spirit.” The adventurous couple were on a camping trip in Chile when – with beautiful mountain peaks soaring above them – Alex got down on one knee and popped the question.

Having previously stayed at Southcombe Barn on Dartmoor – rather dreamily in a four-poster bed in a wildflower meadow – the couple asked the owners if they would be happy to host a small wedding. “We’re so glad they said yes!” says Laura.

As a small girl, Laura was inspired by the wedding scene in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and wove a ‘wild woodland’ and ‘wildflower meadow’ theme, reminiscent of the film, into the details of their day. Vashti from Southcombe Barn created the bouquet, table flowers and wooden arch using flowers and twine from the gardens.

Celebrating over three days, the guests arrived on Friday and enjoyed lunch in the sunny meadow followed by sauna, beers and swimming in the on-site wild swimming pond for the gents, and yoga, a gong bath, herbal tea and chocolate for the ladies. Rejoining for dinner in the beer garden at a nearby inn, the sun allowed them all to be outside for most of the day.

But the weather had other ideas on the wedding day. “It rained and it poured!” says Laura. “We were supposed to have an outdoor ceremony and dinner under tree canopies. But with last-minute changes, we still had the most magical day.”

The barn was decorated with wildflowers, candles and an aisle sprinkled with petals for the ceremony. With Laura’s “grumpy mini dachshund” acting as ring-bearer, the couple incorporated some very special meaning into their celebrations. “Both of our dads have passed away but we made sure they were present: Alex’s ring was made from the gold of his dad’s wedding ring and my dad still got to walk me down the aisle. Before he passed away, he said: ‘Always look for me in the blackbirds, I’ll be there.’ I had a lovely clay blackbird nestled into the most beautiful bouquet to accompany me.”

Dinner was a rustic affair: guests enjoyed a selection of curries followed by a lemon cake in the barn, which was decorated with wildflowers from the garden, mismatched floral cutlery and cosy fur rugs on benches.

As the sun began to set, the newlyweds ventured onto Dartmoor’s rocky heights for photos. “The rain cleared and unveiled the most picturesque pink sky over the moors,” says Laura. “As magical as the whole day was, it was when we were up on the moors, balanced on rocks and kissing in the wind that we felt most us.” Another magical moment was to come later that evening, after the couple had performed their well-practised first dance to Songbird by Eva Cassidy and a silent disco began around the firepit. “We loved dancing under the stars with our loved ones, we were all so full of joy! If you really want to get people to ‘let go’ and dance then we recommend a silent disco.”

Laura couldn’t recommend an intimate wedding more highly. “With 12 of us in total, it meant that we could spend quality time with each of our favourites on the day. It also meant that we got enough time together,” she says. “And other friends and family didn’t miss out – we threw a big garden party the following weekend when we got home.”

“It was when we were up on the moors, balanced on rocks and kissing in the wind that we felt most us”

Plan a so-you celebration with these top tips from the wedding gurus. This issue, we look at ideas for making your guests feel welcome

NOTES ON A WEDDING

Stay refreshed. Providing refreshments prior to the ceremony (not just after) is sure to welcome your guests. If your guests are arriving to set up camp earlier, hire a snack van that serves hot snacks or a much-needed coffee. Maddie

Welcome pack. If your wedding includes accommodation on-site, go that extra mile by leaving your guests a little welcome bag in their rooms. This could include things such as an itinerary of the weekend, a map of the local area including recommendations, a drinks token and a snack for those late evening munchies or a hangover pack for the day after. Beckie

Get started early. Nothing will make your wedding guests feel more welcome than extending the celebrations with a pre-wedding welcome event. Keep it casual with a relaxed environment where guests can mingle, connect and get to know each other before the big day. Jessica

Talking tech. Create a wedding website to house all the information for your special day with an option for your guests to leave RSVP comments about how excited they are. Maddie

Make it personal. Use photos of each guest in the style of ‘find your face, take your place’ for an alternative and interactive replacement for the traditional table plan, or hire a wedding illustrator to capture each guest as a keepsake. Beckie

Whatever the weather. If it’s hot, provide fans on seats for the ceremony that guests can carry with them all day and, for cool evenings, add some blankets in the casual seating area for guests to use. Maddie

Hit the dance floor. Incorporating a song request into your wedding RSVPs is a fun and interactive way to personally engage your guests in the day. Not only will it get them on the dance floor, it will also create a playlist that reflects the tastes of your favourite people! Jessica

Get crafty. Make a guest book table with a Polaroid camera and pens for everyone to leave you a special message or set up a ‘build your own Lego mini figure’ station, where guests build themselves and you frame them as a keepsake of your day. Maddie

Nice notes. Writing a personalised note for each guest will add a unique and intimate touch. They will make your guests feel extra special and appreciated, enhancing their overall experience of your day. Jessica

Party time. Supply flips-flops for your guests, whether it’s to ease sore feet in the evening or to keep them comfortable all day long if you’re planning a beach wedding. Maddie

Sitting pretty. Be thoughtful with the seating plan – seat guests with people they know or who they are likely to have something in common with. This small gesture will make a huge difference to their experience. Jessica

Bathroom baskets. Stock some ‘refresh stations’ in the bathrooms with all the essentials your guests will need but might not think to bring.
