Sculptures as static things invoke an awareness of time. The stillness gives us time to reassemble the elements in an act of recreation that speaks of the past. The inherent dramatic tensions within the structure send us forward into an imagined future. By holding still, a sculpture acts as a marker set into the fabric of time. I like to make things to look at... and feel myself in time. - Leslie Oliver, 2016

▶ ARTIST BIOGRAPHY (b. 1954. Leeton, NSW, Australia) First exhibiting at Access Contemporary Art in 1990 (Brenda May Gallery’s former incarnation), Leslie Oliver has had fifteen solo exhibitions with the Gallery. Having obtained both a Bachelor of Arts from Alexander Mackie College of Fine Art (University of New South Wales) and a Bachelor of Arts in Film & Television Directing from the Australian Film Television and Radio School, Oliver’s interests have always been twofold. He is a founding partner of the Sydney Film School, after working as a director, editor and consultant for many years, writing and directing ‘You Can’t Push The River’, an Australian Film Commission funded feature that was a finalist at Mannheim/Heidelberg International Film Festival in Germany. Oliver’s prolific sculptural practice has been fostered in tandem with his career in Film and is now his primary focus. He has exhibited work nationally in Australia, as well as in Los Angeles and London. In his artistic practice, Oliver has successfully experimented with various materials in sculptural and two-dimensional mediums, often blurring the boundaries between the two. He has created freestanding sculptural forms, wall mounted work and framed objects interacting with paper or cloth surfaces. Most of Oliver’s practice consists of embellished and inspired assemblages that incorporate the use of salvaged materials that would otherwise be landfill. His works are thoughtfully composed, with balancing or paired elements, often accented with geometric patterns of rich colour. Oliver’s artworks are held in the collections of Bathurst Regional Art Gallery in NSW, UNSW Art & Design (formerly the College of Fine Arts) in Sydney, Artbank, the Hong Kong International Airport and the Qantas First Class Lounge (in collaboration with Sokquon Tran) at Sydney’s International Airport.
