GREER TAYLOR out of rain 9 September to 4 October 2014
Greer Taylor out of rain 9 September to 4 October 2014
Rain has magical qualities that not only engage with all our senses, it delivers from the ‘heavens’ the essential ingredient required to make the life on our planet possible (who is to know what is required elsewhere?)… out of rain has a triple meaning: - under our roof we are sheltered “out of rain” - what comes “out of rain”? - new growth - what happens when we are “out of rain”? - desert The works in out of rain refer in some way to this triple meaning together with reference to the ‘lifecycle’ of water: rain, clouds, mist, deluge, its seepage into the earth - to comment about cutting off supply.
Greer Taylor, ‘concavity’ 2014, automotive paint on aluminium, medical felt, cotton thread, found sticks, acrylic, nylon, 110 x 120 x 36cm
concavity of fertility (rain) falling from a pink bottomed cloud; hole dug into the earth; roots of a tree below the ground pinning the tree to the earth; an uprooted root bole, exposed to view; a vessel for holding a forest.
Greer Taylor, ‘cloud 8+1’ 2014, medical felt, silicon thread, stainless steel, steel, 32 x 25 x 25cm
a whimsical “cloud” with 8 legs and one point = cloud 9
Greer Taylor, ‘rebound’ 2014, alligator clips, banksia leaves, automotive paint on MDF, steel, 28 x 28 x 28cm
drops of rain hit the surface, momentarily rebounding, ultimately surrendering to gravity… to seep into the earth to generate an upward rebound of growth.
Greer Taylor, ‘the other side’ 2014, found sticks, knitted tinned wire, steel, automotive paint on MDF, 46 x 45 x 35cm
a small fragile vessels/creature rides on a water droplet to ‘the other side’, while rain falls all around.
Greer Taylor, ‘seep’ 2014, engineering felt, bamboo and wool thread, acrylic, text, 41 x 55 x 55cm
seep in vs. seep out seepage of moisture into the earth vs. fertility washed out / wasted by misuse of land / poor land management (the earth crying blood) This text is embedded in the work: rain earth seep roots cut cry blood wounded lost echos find
Greer Taylor, ‘falling through’ 2014, knitted tinned wire, cotton thread, acrylic, medical felt, stainless steel, aluminium, rice flour, 62 x 50 x 50cm a slice of the earth (a core sample) revealed and isolated,– its life limited. Layering refers to the seepage of water through layers of soil permeating ever outwards pulled into root systems. Stacking makes reference both to layers of time and to the stacking of materials that humans use (such as bricks or even the floors of a multi floor building) to create shelters to keep us out of rain. On the floor is a square of white powder which both helps define the interior details while focusing on the idea of the layers as a sieve, a comment about stewardship of land – it (stewardship) is ’falling through’ to the point where land has little value unless it is for what profits it can provide.
Greer Taylor, ‘hover’ 2014, knitted stainless steel wire, acrylic, stainless steel, steel, 50 x 41 x 36cm
morning mist suspended over a crisp early morning river
Greer Taylor, ‘pool’ 2014, medical felt, stainless steel, sticks, automotive paint on hub cap, acrylic, coloured paper, 30 x 50 x 50cm
a small fragile “core” is taken supporting a small pool over which a delicate ring of sticks dance.
Greer Taylor, ‘span’ 2014, knitted stainless steel wire, stainless steel, elastic thread, paint, MDF, pins, 380 x 210 x 110cm variable
Clouds ignore human made boundaries, spanning borders, states, countries … subject only to the movement of air in the atmosphere of the whole planet. Here a “long cloud” spans the two walls of the gallery, unifying them.
Greer Taylor, ‘out of rain’ (detail) 2014 text, paint, turf 250 x 60 x 70cm variable
Greer Taylor, ‘out of rain’ 2014 text, paint, turf 250 x 60 x 70cm variable
this text based work reminds us, the viewers (I/ me/you) standing in the gallery space, of the soil that is still beneath our feet, soil that once supported a place of wild living diversity is now parched and devoid of life. Put so well by Wendell Berry: “…under the pavement the soil is dreaming of grass.”
