BIOGRAPHY
Edmund Percival Hilary was born on July 20,1919Auckland New Zealand.Percival Augustus Hilary and Gertrude Hilary were his mother and father. He was a shy boy. He read a lot of books and developed a big imagination about exploring.When he was young he wanted to be a explorer. He became interested in mountaineering in middle school.He discovered his love of climbing during a high school trip to Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand's southern alps.He was a beekeeper. He served the Royal New Zealand Air Force in World War II. After the war he joined a climbing club and started preparing to climb Mount Everest. He made his first climb at Mount Oliver. He was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer,and Philanthropist. He has many titles:Sir Edmund Hilary,Knight of the Order of the Garter, Companion of the Order of New Zealand,Knight commander of the Order of the British Empire. He was the first to climb Everest with Tenzing Norgay, John Hunt, George Lowe, and Griffith Pugh.He died January 11,2008.
Why did they Explore? He went to Mount Everest because he got selected by Colonel John Hunt, a British mountaineer.He had determined to climb Mount Everest, the worlds highest peak, so he returned to his love of mountain climbing after the war.Their goal was to reach the top of Mount Everest and come back alive. They were the first people to climb Mount Everest and come back alive.
What happened when they explored??? While they were at Mount Everest there was bad weather. Mount Everest is the largest mountain in the world. The first team left on May29th 1953 to reach the summit of mount Everest. A team of made it up to 300 feet from the summit, the highest any human had yet reached, they had to turn back because of bad weather and problems with their oxygen tanks. Mallory and Irvine another team of climbers died of climbing Mount Everest. Climbing Mount Everest is dangerous because of the freezing weather ( which has a risk of extreme frost bite), potential for long falls from cliffs and into deep crevasses, effects of mountain sickness. Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay were in the British expedition lead by Conel John Hunt
HOW DID THEIR DISCOVERY CHANGE THE WORLD?????
Over a course of 40 years he raised money and set up over 30 schools, 2 hospitals, 12 medical, and 2 airstrips clinics in Nepal. He used some of the money that he got from the expedition and gave it to the poor Sherpa people. Hillary and Norgay became heroes and their accomplishment was one of the most important events in the 20th century.
